Fete a hit By Megan Connolly It was all sun, stalls and a good vibes at the Stihl Shop Garden Fete at Churchill Glade, Pollard Park, on Sunday. There was plenty of food to munch on, places to sit, and all the goodies that go along with a beautiful end to the Rapaura Springs Garden Marlborough event. With Pollard Park and the street running through it as the stunning backdrop, the day went far better than organiser Sally Wadworth had envisioned. “It was an amazing day. The weather really came out for us,” Sally says. Continued on Page 2. Karen Gibb and Joan Clark enjoyed the sun and flowers at the Garden Marlborough Stihl Shop Fete at the weekend.

Sun, flowers and food: this year's Stihl Shop Garden Fete was a huge hit on Sunday with the sun shining over the stalls that lined Churchill Glade, at Pollard Park.

Continued from page 1. There were around 220 sites, with many long-time returning stalls and several new ones joining this year. The fete, which is usually held in Seymour Square in town, was moved to Churchill Glade at Pollard Park because the 100-year commemoration of Armistice Day was being held at the Seymour Square War Memorial. Wider walkways and grassy areas at Churchill Glade meant there was more room for prams and mobility scooters. And it seemed as though people were more inclined to explore what the fete had to offer and stay a while for lunch, Sally says.

“It was just a delight seeing people hanging out by the stream and having a look around the park. “It’s really opened a door to look at something new for next year,” Sally says. There were countless flowers clutched in the hands of keen gardeners and strawberry treats in the hands of excitable children. Rapaura School students and RSE workers kept the atmosphere light by performing a medley of upbeat songs. Picton musician Midge McCleary also performed some light entertainment during the day. “We’ve had a lot of really positive feedback,” Sally says. The whole weekend attract-

ed hundreds of people from outside the region, some even travelling down from Auckland and over from Australia to spend the time exploring Marlborough’s beautiful gardens. Tim Crawford, president of Rapaura Springs Garden Marlborough, was very happy with how the whole weekend went from start to finish. “It had a great community buzz to it,” Tim says. The event kicked off on Thursday night and ran through to Sunday, with garden tours Thursday, Friday and Saturday. “Garden Marlborough wouldn’t work without the sponsors, volunteers and the community,” Tim says.

Teachers take stand with silent rally By Celeste Alexander Marlborough primary teachers and principals are taking part in strike action tomorrow as part of nationwide rolling strikes, and there will be a ‘silent demonstration’ in Blenheim’s CBD. Marlborough Branch NZEI Chairperson and Picton school teacher, Dave Paterson, says they will meet at the amphitheatre by the Taylor River first thing in the morning to discuss the Government’s latest offer, before holding a ‘silent demonstration’ on nearby footpaths. “We will stand silently with our banners, for an hour or so, and will be wearing black as a sign of our sadness that our real issues have not been addressed. “We felt that we did the loud chanting last time, so the silent

approach might be effective this time. “We believe the pupils in Marlborough of today and in the future, deserve a quality teacher in front of them who is valued and given the time and resources to do their job effectively,” Dave says. The Ministry of Education made a new offer to teachers yesterday, which leaves percentage increases of 3% a year over three years unchanged from the previous offer. However, it now includes a new top step and the partial removal of a cap on qualifications for some teachers from 2020, NZEI Te Riu Roa president Lynda Stuart says. “The offers do not address class sizes or professional time claims from NZEI Te Riu Roa. “The question is: will this

address the crisis in education and the teacher shortage? What we asked for had children at the heart - for example more time to teach and smaller class sizes. This is something that our members now need to decide. “Teachers and principals do not take strike action lightly. This second strike is unprecedented for primary schools in recent years,” she says. Figures provided by the NZEI show the key elements of the new offer for teachers are: • 3% +3%+3% per year over a three year term (unchanged) • No increase in classroom release time (unchanged) • A new top pay step for Q3+ and above teachers only from 2020 • Removal of the qualifications cap on progression for

Marlborough Branch NZEI Chairperson and Picton school teacher, Dave Paterson says teachers will be standing silently with their banners tomorrow as part of their strike action. He's pictured here at the last teacher strike held in August. File photo

Q1-Q2 from 2020 • A $500 lump sum for NZEI members only The principals’ offer remains unchanged from the previous offer except for a commitment

to additional funding to ensure a minimum of two adults during the school day in schools with under 50 students, which would mean more support for smaller schools.

Winegrowers honoured Marlburians Jane Hunter and Ivan Sutherland were inducted as Fellows of New Zealand Winegrowers at the New Zealand Wine Awards recently. The Fellows award recognises individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the industry.

Deceased named Police can now release the name of the man killed following a crash in Blenheim on Tuesday, 6 November. He was 85-year-old Victor Collinson, from Blenheim. Emergency services were called after Mr Collinson was hit while crossing Nelson St/State Highway 6, near the Hutcheson Street intersection around 1.20pm. Mr Collinson was flown to Wellington Hospital where he later died from his injuries. Enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the crash.

Space Captain on the way By Bill McElhinney It’s been a life in music for Ged Carr, a Blenheim musician who has just launched his latest CD. Ged composed the songs then recorded them in his home studio, and now The Space Captain is streaming online around the world. Ged graduated from Wellington Teachers College in the early 1970s and landed a position teaching music at Whitney Street School. But the desire to turn his talent to a full-time occupation saw Ged form a band with Blenheim keyboard player Mark Stubbs and

eventually go on the road. “The music scene in the 70s was in the pubs,” Ged says, “so we toured the country playing four nights a week on the pub circuit.” There were various bands – Godley Head, Sphinx – and various musicians before Ged got involved with Mascot recording studios in Auckland and learned to be a recording engineer. “We were busy in those days recording singles, and jingles for radio adverts,” Ged says. Then in the 1980s the digital age arrived, and Ged landed a job with

Yamaha NZ, travelling around the country introducing musicians to the new midi sequencers and keyboards. The role also took him to Japan, where he worked with Yamaha engineers on keyboard and synthesizer developments. In 2010 Ged returned to Blenheim to set up his own studio. He has produced three albums: two of his own music – Original Trials, and Stand & Deliver with The Beavertown Hellhounds – and one with his gigging band WattFour, The Fun of It.

His latest production, The Space Captain, took two years to write and produce and showcases the musical skills Ged has acquired over the years. “I’ve learned a lot,” Ged says, “especially working with various keyboards over the years. “This was an opportunity to put all those skills together, to do something I’ve always wanted to do. “Making music – it’s such a great thing to do; you get so much satisfaction, and hopefully others do, too.”

River Queen’s new home The River Queen, the flat bottom boat that sailed the Taylor River in Blenheim for more than a decade, has been relocated to a new home on the Kaiapoi River near Christchurch. The boat was transported by truck to its new home and attracted a lot of attention on the journey.

Health Hub expands Scott Street Health will move into the new town centre health hub from next Monday, where it will operate as the Civic Family Health Centre. The new surgery, in phase two of the health hub, will also include a new purpose-built branch of Wairau Pharmacy, to be known as Civic Pharmacy.

Marlborough Mayor John Leggett and Nicole Leger from RNZAF Base Woodbourne, with one of the historic pine trees planted at Churchill Marlborough RSA President Chris Bamber helps with the planting of a historic pine at Glade, Pollard Park, on Saturday morning. Pollard Park on Saturday.

Churchill Glade pine planting honours Great War sacrifice By Bill McElhinney A solitary Turkish red pine stood on a hill above Anzac Cove on April 25, 1915, as soldiers from New Zealand and Australia landed on the beaches. One hundred years later, two of its descendants were planted on Saturday in the RSA Walk of Remembrance at Churchill Glade, Pollard Park, as a special living tribute to the soldiers of World War I. The original lone pine was the only tree left on its hill after Turkish soldiers felled the rest to use for fortifications. Although it was blown to pieces shortly after the Anzac troops arrived, it survived long enough to give

its name to the hill, which the soldiers called Lone Pine. Australian troops took Lone Pine in August 1915 in an attack intended as a diversion for several other assaults, including New Zealand troops’ famous fight for Chunuk Bair. Seeds were collected in 2012 from a Turkish red pine (Pinus brutia) growing at Paeroa Golf Course. This tree is an authenticated New Zealand descendant of the original Lone Pine and traces back to a pine cone brought home by Australian soldier Sergeant Keith McDowell after World War 1. Seedlings were reared at the Rotorua headquarters of Scion,

the New Zealand Forest Research Institute, and distributed to RSAs around the country to be planted at commemorative events. Two of the trees came to Marlborough, and have spent the past two years being cared for in a local nursery before being planted to mark Armistice Day. However, the living tribute has only been possible because of some detective work by by forestry consultants Mike Wilcox and David Spencer in 2007. Numerous trees around the country are claimed to be offshoots of the original tree, but Mike found that only the Paeroa tree was an authentic descendent. Mike says every other tree is just

a pretender - they were from the wrong species. The pine trees at Gallipoli were all pinus brutia, or Turkish red pines. Trees claiming to be true “lone pine” descendants are all of various other pine varieties, he says. Staff from Base Woodbourne helped representatives from the Marlborough RSA plant 10 other trees, oaks, ash and a tulip tree, in the same area on Saturday following the planting of the historic pines. Marlborough District Council reserves and amenities officer, Robert Hutchinson, says there are plans to plant up to 90 more trees in Pollard Park.

Hairy challenge 3.9% INTEREST P.A.

By Celeste Alexander The Chevron, the Dali, the English and the Handlebar... these are just some of the styles of moustaches grown and enjoyed by men throughout the world. But for local man Brett McLaughlan, he’s happy with what ever growth that occurs this month, as he takes part in Movember. The Blenheim branch manager for Super Tyre signed up for the challenge for the first time, in an effort to raise money and awareness for some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. Brett is part of the Super Tyre team which has a team profile on the Movember Foundation website, and says it was his sales manager’s idea to take part. “So far I’m the only one with donations,” he laughs. “It’s a fun challenge that supports men, so why not?” When the Sun visited on Monday, Brett’s 12-day growth was shaping up nicely and for

a man who likes to be clean shaven, it’s not annoying him yet. “No one has given me any stick about the mo yet either,” he jokes. The origin of Movember began in 2003 when two mates from Melbourne, Australia (Travis Garone and Luke Slattery) were having a quiet beer. Their conversation turned to the moustache and they joked about bringing it back. Inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they decided to make the campaign about men’s health and prostate cancer, and together came up with the Movember challenge. In 15 years Movember has funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world. Mine would be ‘We are the Champions’, it was the anthem of my youth.

I would say ‘I Want to Break Free’ because the music video was just so good.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ because you hear it so much and it has such an impact.

Bohemian Rhapsody- it’s just amazing how he produced it, the whole thing.

Probably ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ because it is such a classic.

‘We are the Champions’-because we are!

Letters to the editor

Ban the bangers! Dear Ed, Guy Fawkes has come and gone again with the usual displays of carelessness and inconsideration. It’s time to ban the bangers, and the sparklers and all the rest except for controlled displays, such as those put on by our local school or the Marlborough For Fun displays at New Year. Certain members of our society prove every year that given the opportunity to be witless and cause expensive damage, they just can’t pass up the opportunity. I feel sorry for the volunteer fire brigades that have to clean up after them. Let’s take the fireworks out of their hands and let only responsible organisations use them. Not Impressed Blenheim

Mum says thanks! Dear Ed, I wish to sincerely thank and congratulate the Marlborough Parents Centre on providing an amazing parents room at the A&P Show. I attended the show on Friday and wondered where myself and others would feed and change our babies on such a wet and miserable day.

It was a very welcome sight to see a room provided with comfortable chairs, changing facilities, microwave for heating bottles and even free nappies and wipes. It was thanks to this facility that we enjoyed the show for longer than expected. Very appreciative Mum! Blenheim

The bank’s billions Dear Ed, I found it a bit depressing being reminded how we’re donating billions of dollars to foreign bankers. So I gave myself a bit of a laugh by recalling how ANZ CEO Mike Smith had pointed to the way the high cost of Aussie workers was reducing their country’s competitiveness. Turned out Smithy had collected $10.1 million for his efforts that year. Oh well, I suppose we would have wasted those billions on training and up-skilling our people, and the past three decades have taught us how to do without such fripperies. We can always ask people to come here to do what needs to be done – like kickboxing, for example! Bill Holvey Blenheim W H E N O N LY T H E B E S T W I L L D O !

Beer Garden’s big day coming soon By Bill McElhinney When Dietmar Schnarre was growing up in Northern Germany, beer festivals were regular events. “Germany is the home of beer festivals,” Dietmar says. “We were allowed to drink beer when we were 16 years of age, and the festivals were wonderful community events. “They usually ran over a weekend, and featured local produce, a bit like a farmers market, and of course local beers, lots of fun, live music and dancing.” Dietmar and his wife, Heike, were living and working in Switzerland in 1986 when they decided to explore New Zealand. “We were working nine months in the hospitality industry so we decided to backpack around New Zealand for three months,” Dietmar says. “We really enjoyed it and fell in love with New Zealand.” In 1997 the couple moved to New Zealand, became NZ residents, and worked in the hospitality industry before moving to Marlborough where Dietmar worked for what was then Montana Wines. Then in 2004 Dietmar set up his own business in the Drylands Winery and decided he would like to introduce Marlborough to some of his homeland. His first beer festival at Drylands, in 2009, was a success and in 2011 he hit a new high with 1000 people at what had become a popular annual event. Since moving from Drylands to Dodson Street Beer Garden, Dietmar has kept the

popular beer festival going, although on a smaller scale. “We cater for only 300 people at the Dodson Street venue,” Dietmar says. “It’s more manageable and more enjoyable for the people who come.” Dietmar and Heike and now preparing for the next festival, to be held at Dodson Street from 3pm to 10.30pm on December 15. “We will have three new local bands that will be making their first public appearance at the festival,” Dietmar says. “We’ll also have 20 new beers on tap and an all-day German buffet; there will be good food, good music, good fun and good fellowship. “It’s also for us here at Dodson Street to say thanks to all the locals who have supported us over the year.” The Sun has 10 tickets to the Summer Beer Fest up for grabs. All you have to do is answer the two questions below. 1. What are the names of the three bands involved in Marlborough’s Summer Beer Fest? 2. What is the name of the brewery situated next to Dodson Street Beer Garden? Email your answers along with your name and contact phone number to office@blenheimsun.co.nz before 5pm, November 16th. The first ten correct entries will win a ticket to the Summer Beer Fest.

Godfrey’s a tractor man at heart Godfrey Earle talks to Megan Connolly about his life and interests in engineering and farm machinery. Godfrey Earle’s relationship with farming is like many in New Zealand; starting out as a young boy on a family farm. He began tedding hay at the age of seven on a Farmall Cub tractor on his family’s dairy farm in Manawatu. “I’ve always been around someone who could swing a spanner. “My father and brother had the first automatic hay press in Manawatu in 1947,” Godfrey says. Godfrey served as a structural and general engineer for most of his life, but initially, he worked as an apprentice on a dairy farm north of Waikato, milking 300 cows. He took up managing a farm in Cambridge, then moved to engineering in Auckland and managed a workshop with around 30 staff, set up his own business there, then bought a farm in Collingwood with his wife Thelma. “When we bought the farm the paper had a headline that read something like: ‘Auckland buyers buy Bainham farms at an inflated price,’ and they wished us luck,” Godfrey laughs. Godfrey met his wife Thelma in Levin on a farm there, which he says is an interesting romantic story in itself. It’s something special raising a family on the farm, according to Godfrey. “We raised our four kids there for 20 years,” he says. Once their children were grown, they left their second son running the farm. Godfrey felt a change of occupation was needed and that was when he relocated to Blenheim. Before long he moved back to his roots, joining the team at Cuddons

Godfrey Earle on his Holder A20 tractor which he lovingly restored.

Engineering and working there for 10 years. Godfrey and Thelma, who have spent 57 years together, bought five acres in The Marlborough Sounds but remained living in Springlands. “Thelma was always a keen gardener, so it’s quite a big garden!” Godfrey decided that it was important for him to do something that was the complete opposite to engineering, so he joined the Blenheim Operatic Society. “I’ve always been a bit of a clown,” he says. He spent 10 years building sets, acting, and stage managing and engineering different things for

the shows. But nothing can stop an engineer and the reward that comes with figuring out a puzzle. And for Godfrey that came in the form of repairing old machinery with the Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery Society. So far he’s repaired a TA Ferguson, 135 Massey F, a Holder A20, a Farmall Cub, and a Farmall B. Godfrey and 10 mates even took a trip down the East Coast for the International Tractor Show, taking his Massey Ferguson 135 tractor which he built a cab over the driver’s seat for. They even pulled the caravans

was a bucket of rust when I got it. I had to rebuild it from the ground up, the whole thing needed redoing. It drove me nuts. “It was a real mind bender because the parts were around the country or had to come from Germany. The Holder also holds a special place in his heart for another reason. Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”. To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born. Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

or

NECK PAIN?

Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

Tyres large and small, we do them all Tyre technicians do so much more than just removing, repairing and fitting tyres. With customer safety in mind, they are also looking at vehicle stability and will provide technical support and expert advice on the correct tyres for that vehicle. All of this and a friendly smile, you can expect no less from the team at Independent Tyre Specialists (ITS) Marlborough. The business is owned by local couple Andrew Morton and Robyn Morrison who took over ITS three years ago. Andrew has worked as a tyre technician for over 25 years and recently Robyn left her job as a pharmacy technician to be at the workshop fulltime. “People are starting to become familiar with me,” Robyn says. “I am hands on though, I get in and fit and strip tyres when the workshop is busy.” A lot has changed since the couple took over, including a vibrant new paint-job, an

expansion on their range of tyres, and the introduction of specialised machinery. One area of the business that is unique, is the tyre bay set up specifically for motorcycles. Andrew has a background in motocross and cross country riding, so with it being a strong interest of his, he has brought in a lift and a balancer. “The balancer is the only one of it’s kind in Marlborough that we are aware of, with both the lift and balancer we can fit any type of roadbike tyre. “It has the latest technology and modern touch screen, so whether you bring in the wheels or the bike, we can take care of it,” Andrew says. ITS can provide tyres for all motorcycles including classic models. “We have quite a few customers with classic motorcycles,” he says. ITS is fully equipped to provide tyres for a wide range of uses, from large machinery through to pushchairs and everything in between.

Marlborough District Council. The result has seen five youth from MGC and five youth from MBC, and 10 youth from QCC complete the YEP program, in its first year, that this program has been run in the South Island. The key competencies of the programme are Positive Attitude, Communication Skills, Team Work, Willingness to Learn, Self- Management, Resilience and Thinking Skills. There are credits youth can obtain during this program to support their Level 1 and Level 2 NZCA. The youth then do 20 hours volunteering in the community, and as their skills and confidence grow they then do 80 hours of work placements in the industries they think they may like to go into. One of the youth who took part says; “Darlene, thank you for helping me onto this pathway, I appreciate it a lot and couldn’t have found a better place for me to start off at and this job has helped me get along in life, I am honestly not sure how I’d be doing and how things would be for me if it wasn’t for your support.” Funding dependent, the Marlborough Youth Trust would like to run three programs in 2019 for the youth aged 16-24. This program is a great follow on, for youth from CACTUS and the YES Youth in Emergency Services program. Patients managing their health with app By Megan Connolly The team at Francis Street medical have been using an innovative new online website and phone app which allows patients to look up their health information. The ‘Manage my Health’ app is a nationally used site that allows anyone, anytime, to access their own records, order prescriptions, lab results and even book doctors’ appointments. Primary care practice assistant Denise Manning has been in the waiting room of Francis Street Medical recently helping those willing to sign up to the site and gave them a quick rundown on how to use it. “It’s a great way to cut down on confusion because patients are able to check the notes written by their doctors and reduce the errors,” Denise says. To sign up to ‘Manage my Health’ all you need to do is drop into the practice with some ID and an email address, and they’ll

give you a unique code which you can use to activate your account. “You can book appointments when it suits you because you don’t have to wait until the practice is open,” Denise says. Don’t worry, the site has the same level of security as internet banking. The practice has been integrating the app and website as part of their service for around two years now, slowly introducing it to patients. “It’s free and very intuitive to use”, Denise says. Eighty-year-old Jim Lochhead has been using the site on his desktop for over 12 months now and thinks it’s brilliant. “It’s great. I can make appointments and request repeat prescriptions without having to make a phone call and wait for the phones to be answered. “It’s a magic system and I’d recommend it to anyone,” Jim says.

Sugar content Did you know that fruit juice can contain a similar amount of sugar per 100ml as a fizzy drink? And at seven cubes per can that's the sum total amount of sugar an adult should be consuming in an entire day! Too much sugar means too many calories which leads to weight gain. This all adds up to increased risk of obesity and serious illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. How much sugar is too much? Nutrition labels tell you how much sugar a food contains. Food that has 15g or more per 100g is considered high in sugar. Anything under 5g of total sugar per 100g is low. New recommendations say that adults (and children over 11) should be consuming no more than 30 grams (seven cubes) of

sugar each day. On average, this is about half the amount of sugar an adult currently consumes per day. Teenagers are consuming about three times the recommended amount. Children from seven-10 years should consume no more than 24g (six cubes) and children from four-six years 19g maximum (five cubes). Experts say you don’t need to stop eating sugar completely, but it would be wise to reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks – especially those that don’t offer much nutrition. Fun fact: A 12-ounce can of regular Coke contains 39 grams of total sugar, which is about 9 1/3 teaspoons of sugar.

Big night soon for local sports achievers By Peter Jones, Sport Tasman Thirty two nominees will take centre stage at the 2018 Marlborough Sports Awards, to be held on November 19 at the Marlborough Convention Centre. The nominees are spread across under-19, senior and team categories, all sure to be hotly contested. Sport Tasman community sport manager Mel Greenwood, a member of the organising committee alongside representatives from the Blenheim Round Table and the Marlborough App, says the group are excited by the quality and quantity of the nominees this year. “We have a wide cross-section of athletes, across a variety of sports, who have represented this province with distinction over the past 12 months.” Mel says. “The fact that they have been nominated to attend the awards shows the esteem in which they are held by their sporting bodies, plus their peers, and underlines their commitment.” In addition to the various sectional awards, which lead into the evening’s main event, the naming of the Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year, the Craigs Investment Partners Marlborough Medal will be presented to a person who

has been involved in a number of roles with their sport over many years and is regarded as an icon of the Marlborough sporting community. Guest speaker at the awards is international pole vaulting star Eliza McCartney, a bronze medalist at the Rio Olympics, while Sky Sport commentator Tony Johnson will handle the MC’s duties. There are still some tickets available for the awards evening but they are selling quickly. Sports Award nominees. The racing pigeons from Blenheim had to negotiate variable weather during their trip home on Saturday after liberation at Timaru, 390 km distant. Mist and low cloud hugged the hills thereby forcing the birds to cover extra distance by having to go around the obstacle. The first arrival home at Two Fishers loft obviously had it's orienteering ability in fine tuned mode as it won the race with a speed of 63 km/hr, second position to Chris Bensley whose bird averaged 60 km/hr for the journey. Third to Alister Cooper with 59 km/ hr just edging out another Renwick bird of Ian McColm on 58.8 km/hr, next came the Picton bird of George Massie which unfortunately didn't trigger the electronic timer as he entered his loft but when noticed was awarded 55 km/hr.
