Cherry – oh!

By Bill McElhinney Derek Matthews’ day starts early. By 6.30am Derek is in the Spring Creek Cherrybank orchard carefully combing the trees for perfect fruit. “You pick by colour and by size,” Derek says. “You want the brix levels to be right, just like the grapes, so you’re looking for fruit that is the right colour and the right size.” Derek has been picking cherries for 14 years, so he knows what to look for. On a good day he will fill 20 buckets with ripe, red cherries. Continued on Page 2. Veteran cherry picker Derek Matthews harvests early varieties at the Spring Creek Cherrybank Orchard.

Cherry harvest gathers momentum Continued from page 1. “But it takes longer to fill a bucket with the smaller ones, such as the Earlise, which we are picking now,” Derek says. He also inspects each tree and removes any split or damaged fruit, and leaves unripe cherries to be picked later. Derek works through the day with only a few brief breaks, finishing about 4pm. “We want to get the fruit off while it’s ripe and the weather is good,” says Blair McLean, who owns the orchard in partnership with his wife Mel and long-time orchardists Bernie and Trish Rowe. The recent warm weather is good news for the cherry harvest, Blair says. The early ripening Earlise variety will go mainly to the domestic market leading up

to Christmas. “We start with the early varieties then move on to varieties such as Stella, Dawson and the white flesh Rainier.” Blair says. “Later we’ll be picking fruit for export, mainly to Korea, Thailand and China.” With cherries’ short shelf life, a quick turnaround between picking, packing and air freighting is vital. The once-popular Japanese market has largely disappeared, Blair says. And so have many of the cherry orchards, which have made way for grapes. “There’s probably fewer than 30 hectares of cherries in Marlborough now,” Blair says. “It’s a high risk crop and you only get one chance a year.”

Over the coming weeks there will be 32 pickers at Cherrybank, working through until early January. The New Zealand cherry industry is small internationally, producing just over 5000 tonnes last year off only 650ha, a volume that pales against the United States’ massive 110,000 tonne annual crop. More than 90 per cent of New Zealand exported cherries are grown in the Central Otago, as areas like Marlborough have moved into vineyard production. The 2016-17 season had the cherry industry achieve some new records, including a 5000 tonne harvest that earned the industry $88 million, of which two thirds came through export sales, largely to China and Taiwan.

By Celeste Alexander They’re 70 and fabulous! Longtime friends Viv Broughton and Gemma McK inney have been friends since the age of five. They met in their first year at St Mary’s School and have enjoyed many laughs over the 65 years that followed. On Monday Viv and friends gathered to celebrate Gemma’s birthday,

and then the celebrations will continue in a weeks time when Viv turns 70. “It’s so special at this stage of our lives to be here today celebrating,” Gemma says. “We always ring each other on our birthdays,” Viv adds. Viv and Gemma are fifth generation Marlburians with Viv a member of the Newman family and Gem-

ma the MacDonald family. At one stage the families were even neighbours, so it was no wonder that Viv and Gemma shared many common interests, such as playing netball together for St Mary’s. “Our families were close and the MacDonalds always welcomed me into their whanau, which is something I’ve always admired,” Viv says.

Picton weather station The new weather station at Waitohi Domain in Picton has been built and will now be tested so it can feed data to the MetService map for its national weather forecasting services. The aim is to have Picton weather included in national radio, television and newspaper services. The station will measure rainfall, wind speed and direction, air temperature, humidity and barometric pressure using equipment that complies with the National Environmental Monitoring Standards.

Erebus service honoured By Bill McElhinney “In tragic times like these, it’s great to know someone’s there to get your loved ones home.” Blenheim man and retired New Zealand Army Sergeant, Neville Jones, made these remarks as he was presented with a special medal at RNZAF Base Woodbourne on Thursday. Neville received the seldom awarded New Zealand Special Service Medal for his part in the recovery operation after the Erebus air disaster. Air New Zealand Flight TE901 crashed on the north slope of Mount Erebus, Ross Island, Antarctica on November 28, 1979, with the loss of all 257 passengers

and crew. Neville, who was on the first of his three tours of duty with Operation Deep Freeze in Antarctica, assisted with the recovery operation for the disaster, known as Operation Overdue. “The police were up on the mountain recovering the bodies and we were on the runway down below,” Neville says. “We took the bodies and loaded them onto the aircraft bound for Auckland for identification. “It was great working with a group of Kiwis, who had the attitude: ‘Let’s roll up our sleeves and get the job done!’ “And it was great to be part of the recovery operation, because

you knew the people back home wanted to get their loved ones back. “I feel the same about the Pike River families. They also want to get their loved ones back.” Neville joined the army in 1976 and served for 20 years until 1996. He met his wife, Gloria, in 1978 when they were both at the Burnham military camp. He and Gloria have recently returned from four years in Vanuatu. Neville was appointed by the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand as a project manager to assist with rebuilding in the wake of the 2015 cyclone Pam. Neville was also presented with a second medal, the New Zealand

Defence Service Medal which was instituted in 2011 to recognise service in the New Zealand Defence Force. The medals were presented by Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Andrew Clark, a former Blenheim boy. Andrew lived in Blenheim until he was about eight years old. His father, Jack Moon, who had been in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, later joined Safe Air and flew Bristol Freighters out of Woodbourne. His father’s passion for aviation rubbed off on both Andrew and his older brother Chris, who also joined the Air Force and served as a C-130 and B757 pilot.

A heavy vehicle hit the truss of Craiglochart Bridge No. 1 in Waihopai Valley Road on Monday and the Marlborough Distric t Council immediately closed the bridge to undertake a structural assessment. The bridge engineer has advised the bridge can be re-opened to light vehicles but remains closed for all heavy vehicles. A detour is available on the Avondale and Summerlands roads for heavy vehicles, up to a maximum of Class 1 loading. The public will be advised of any change to the situation via the media and Council’s communication channels.

Christmas cheer By Celeste Alexander With just over two weeks to go until the Sun’s Christmas Appeal finishes, there is a growing pile of donations under the Sun’s Christmas tree. People of all ages, including eight-year-old Ruby Garratt of Riverlands School, have been dropping off donations including gifts, clothing, non-perishable food items and toiletries which will be directly benefiting local families. Each year different charities are chosen to benefit from the appeal, and this year it is Supporting Families Marlborough as well as Foundations, run by Noralyn Berwick. These organisations work with local families who will find Christmas a struggle this year. All donations can be brought into the Sun office at 72 High Street, Blenheim. The cutoff for donations will be Friday, December 8. Thank you for your support.

Business backing for CBD living All Blenheim business owners should be encouraged to get behind the notion of populating our CBD’s empty first storey with apartments and accommodation. With this in mind, I approached the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce and the Blenheim Business Association for their thoughts. Hans Neilson, the chamber’s newly appointed general manager, said: “The idea makes an obvious sort of sense. There will be a process that will have to be followed, but if Stuart Smith MP.

the end result is a solution that brings activity and vibrancy to the CBD, and addresses some of the region’s challenges around accommodation, then we are looking at the kernel of a great idea” Bl e n h e i m Bu s i n e s s Association coordinator Caroline Stone said the association supports the development of apartments and other accommodation in the CBD. “People create vibrancy, and having people living in

Band of Locals back at Havelock

the town centre should have positive effects for retailers and hospitality businesses,” says Caroline. “Lifestyles are changing and apartment living is becoming more popular. By adapting and providing this opportunity we may also provide more options for people wanting to relocate to Marlborough.” Backing for the idea of accommodation and apartments in our CBD from both the chamber and the Blenheim Business

Association – which has been doing some great work to revitalise central Blenheim, such as the Marlborough Mile - is heartening. Support should be encouraged not only from chamber and association members who would benefit directly, such as the retail, café and restaurant owners, but its wider membership because a vibrant CBD makes Marlborough a better place to live for the whole community.

When looking at examples of other towns and cities working to revitalise their CBDs, on many occasions it was not only the foresight and initiative of developers, but also the cooperation, and in some instance an active push, from councils and local business groups that led to success. All it takes is for one developer, one business owner, one person, to take the initiative and do this – others will soon follow suit.

Boogie time at Havelock with the Band of Locals.

By Bill McElhinney They’re coming back again to rock the Havelock Town Hall. Band of Locals, a group of Havelock and Sounds singers and musicians, made their debut last year with a series of successful swinging musical evenings. The group has been rehearsing hard and will bring their combined talents to the popular cosy, cafe style hall setting on November 30 and December 1, 7 and 8. “Come along and have a bit of a boogie,” says one of the organisers, Kim Weatherhead. “It’s local people entertaining local people, and anyone else who fancies a cheap night out.

“Last year’s event was very successful, so bring your drinks, chips, pies and dancing shoes and come and have some fun!” Sam Edmonds and Cameron Marshall will take care of the lighting and Chris Holdaway from Sound Hire Solutions will make sure it all sounds good. Band of Locals members are: Hans Neilson, lead guitar and vocals; Kim Weatherhead, lead vocals; Gary Marshall, bass guitar; Rick Edmonds, rhythm guitar; Simon Millington, drums; Fern Ritchie, keys; Faye Leov, vocals/ backing; Paula Marshal, percussion; Suzie Edmonds, mouth organ/ backing vocals.

A mixture. At the moment I’m growing rhubarb, tomatoes cucumber, beans, etc. I got taught as a child how to garden. I appreciate that I know where my food comes from.

I buy mine. I’m always on the go so I don’t have time to look after them.

We buy what we can’t grow. I have a small section so I grow what I can. I love that it’s fresh.

A bit of both. I like to grow my own beetroot, herbs, lettuce. If you can grow your own, why wouldn’t you?

Both. I’ve got summer salads and like lots of herbs.

Both - My potatoes are ready and I grow things like kale and celery.

Old Man’s Beard Dear Ed, I was amazed when going trout fishing down the Wairau to see old man’s beard vines growing everywhere. What is council doing about it? I asked a friend. “Well Perce me old mate, the council says it’s so widespread it’s no longer classed as a pest plant.” Stone the crows! That means council has failed to control old man’s beard. What’s more, my mate told me, council says wallabies are a pest. “Where are wallabies?” I asked. He told me there’s none in Marlborough. What sort of pest management is that? Real pests present are not pests. But a “pest” that isn’t here is? Eh? Percy Parker. Blenheim W H E N O N LY T H E B E S T W I L L D O !

Dear Ed, Once again I have narrowly avoided being hit by a speeding car at the Spring Creek roundabout. It was that close that I really thought I was a goner. I was turning into Ferry Road, coming from Blenheim, and was just about to leave the roundabout when a car coming from Picton passed the give way sign and nearly t-boned me. Allowing traffic to approach the roundabout at 70kmh is absolutely stupid, as what happened to me, for the second time I might add, can happen to anybody trying to enter Ferry Road. There should be a 50kmh limit for traffic coming from Picton, or else some judder

bars to slow them down. The planners of this death trap should take a closer look at the situation, and rectify it. Traffic entering the roundabout from Blenheim and Rapaura Road, have to slow down to negotiate it, but traffic from Picton can approach it at a higher speed, putting others in danger. And now the plantings in the approaches are starting to obscure your vision when in a normal car. Not everyone has an SUV, but it seems that the people who design these things think they do. They should get in a car when planning the signs and plantings, and leave the SUV at the office. Second Time Lucky. Blenheim

Jet boats on Wairau Dear Ed, Last Wednesday evening, at Selmes Road, two jet boats went speeding past just 20 metres from two women paddling, one with a young baby and two dogs. As I understand, regulations state a boat must not exceed a speed of five knots (a fast walking speed) if within 50m of a person. That is quite apart from the noise pollution and wake waves set up. Who allowed jet boats on the Wairau? Wake up Maritime NZ. Cervus Blenheim

Christmas cheer for Tempo concert By Megan Connolly Get your Santa hats and wrapping paper ready because TEMPO’s Christmas concert is happening on Friday November 23 at 7pm at the Wesley Centre. For their annual Christmas charity concert they ask everyone attending to bring a new, unwrapped gift instead of paying the

usual door charge. All the gifts from the event will be donated to the Salvation Army Christmas appeal and be given to children whose fam ilies can’t afford Christmas presents. Wrapping paper donations are also welcome, an organiser says. What’s a Christmas cel-

ebration without a shared supper afterwards? Make sure you bring a scrumptious shared plate you can share once the concert is over. Tempo concerts are a great way to support the young and talented emerging school-aged children of Marlborough performing on stage.

Arlin’s up the garden path By Megan Connolly Spring has sprung at the Marlborough’s Art Society’s Up the Garden Path exhibition that features many colourful displays of local creative expression, which opened recently. It’s one of the largest ever exhibitions held by the MAS with 113 works by 66 different artists, according to society president Annie Stark. “You feel a deep appreciation of, and attraction to the beauty of the flowers and other plants being celebrated in the exhibition,” Annie says.

Fisherman and artist, Arlin Sukarlin, has been living in Marlborough around 10 years but he and his wife have been artists for many years. Arlin describes his art as quite spontaneous and spur of the moment. “I don’t know when it’s going to start or stop,” Arlin says. The abstract and vibrant paintings are created with acrylic paints over many days. Some take much more time to create the layers and depths. But the main reason for choosing acrylics paints is

that they are much quicker to dry than oil paints, he says. “I like to experiment with many different techniques and feelings. All three of my paintings in the exhibitions are very different. This isn’t the first time the artist is showing his works in the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery. “I try to do work I can express here. I just love coming to the gallery,” Arlin says. When Arlin isn’t painting, he’s a fisherman, finding the beautiful and varying scenery of his job to be inspiring. “I don’t copy other artists, I copy who I am.”

Dance, medicine and motherhood A dancer, dance teacher, doctor and mother, Blenheim woman Sara Bishell has turned her passions into a career and is loving life, as Celeste Alexander finds out. The saying ‘don’t wish for it, work for it’ would apply perfectly to Sara’s life. From a young age she trained in ballet, jazz then later highland dance, went on to win nine New Zealand championship titles, then spent six years at university studying medicine. Even at university she was still training in highland dance, used as a physical outlet in between studying and exams. It’s been a lot of hard work for the former St Mary’s and Marlborough Girls’ College student, but it’s been all worth it, she says. You could say Sara’s love for dancing was inherited. Her grandmother Daphne was a highland dancer, as was her mother Robyn who was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for her involvement with highland dancing nationally and internationally. “Dance has always been a big part of my life, pretty much since birth. “The story goes, that mum was in labour with me while teaching a dance class. One of the parents told her she should go to the hospital... so really I was destined to dance,” Sara laughs. Growing up Sara took ballet lessons from age three, then formal highland dance from age four. “From then on highland was

always my main love,” Sara says. “I learned from mum then when I went to university I had other teachers.”

“From then on highland was always my main love” For as long as she can remember, Sara says she always knew she wanted to study medicine. She

attended Otago University and studied for six years to gain her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB). She returned to Blenheim with the aim to work for one to two years, but plans soon changed. “I always thought I’d come back to work at Wairau Hospital for a year, maybe two, but then I met my husband and didn’t leave,” she laughs. “Medicine could have taken me anywhere in the world, but I’m really valuing having my family close by.” Sara and husband Simon Bishell married then welcomed their son

Lauchlan, now eight months old. She’s enjoying a balance between her medical career, dance teaching and motherhood. “It’s perfect, I can have my career, teach dance and spend time with our amazing family. It’s even more special to know Lauchlan has so many wonderful people around him,” she says. While Lauchlan is young Sara is working part-time at Hospice Marlborough, with the view that she will return to general practice next year. “I have a special interest in palliative care and I’m really lucky that the job combination is open to part-

time work. I’m also teaching dance one afternoon a week alongside mum at the Marlborough Academy of Dance which keeps me busy. “Long term Blenheim is home and I’d like to go into practice/ ownership but for now I have two papers left to complete for my palliative care diploma then I will carry on with my Hospice work, which I absolutely love. “I’d like to think I can also do some traveling with dance but in a slightly different role, maybe as a singer or choreographer. “Who knows where life will take us. I’m just enjoying the journey,” Sara smiles.

Foodbank volunteers will hit the street next Monday By Celeste Alexander “Don’t forget that the Marlborough Community Foodbank Appeal takes place next Monday!” Hundreds of volunteers will be collecting donations for the Appeal, which takes place from 6-8pm. This year the appeal has Marlborough Community FoodBank manager Wynnie Cosgrove with volun- been extended and will be visiting teers helping to co-ordinate the Foodbank Street Appeal, Tash Knox, John more communities, including Dry Hills, Fairhall, Fairbourne, Foley, Vonny Paul and Jo Lane.

Record numbers at shearing event By Celeste Alexander A record number of dogs and shearers entered into the Woodbourne Tavern & Motel’s recent Speed Shear and Bark Up event. It began with the popular Bark Up event where 43 dogs were entered. Woodbourne Tavern manager Rowan Ingpen says this was an “incredible” number. “It was a great event with a wide range of ages entering. Local boy Scott Downing took the win this year, normally Freddy Gane wins with his Beardie ‘Trick’ but was pipped by Scott’s dog,” he says. The Speed Shear also saw a large number of entrants due to the Marlborough A&P Show being on the same weekend. “A bunch of shearers had come up from Canterbury and word had

gone around that we were holding this event, so at the last minute entered. We ended up with 28 competing,” Rowan says. This posed a challenge for organisers as there were a limited number of sheep. “Because we didn’t have enough sheep for the teams event at the end, we had to change things up so we had the teams tell a joke, blow up a balloon until it popped, eat a Renwick pie then drink a pint,” Rowan says. “The Bayleys team won and it’s safe to say Glenn Dick’s joke was the best of the night. “Both the Bark Up and the shearing drew phenomenal crowds and it’s definitely something that’s growing more popular each year,” Rowan says.

Woodbourne, Rarangi and Seddon. The Marlborough Community Foodbank manager Wynnie Cosgrove says there is already a good stock of canned foods, but there are several other items needed. “Things we are low on include spreads, flour, soup mix, cereals, milk powder, long life milk, noodles, crackers and non-perishable

dealing with recruitment agencies when she had the laundry was receiving Staff that clearly were not right for the job. With this in mind Debbie started thinking about a Recruitment business of her own and what would be different if it was run with her values. After a discussion with her former accountant A-Temp was born. Firstly A-Temp strives to match the job and candidate correctly so it is a productive investment. There is no point sending a person out for a job when they are school leavers, and they are expected to drive a Class Four Truck. Getting the right person for the job is very important. Happy staff are productive staff. If you are looking for a new position, just pop into the office on Maxwell Road and fill out an application pack. Julia will have a chat with you to find out little bit about you and see if we can place you into your dream job. A-temp take the stress away from employing staff. A-Temp try and track down suitable applicants, weed out the people who do not have the skills required for the position and then present any potential candidates to the employer for them to make the call. A-Temp is 100% locally owned and have a team of industry-seasoned and knowledgeable people and specialise in finding permanent placements for applicants who may start as temporary staff.

A-Temp gets your A-team The team at A-Temp, providing workforce solutions, are excited to be bringing their successful recruitment agency to 15 Maxwell Road, Blenheim. A-Temp’s aim is quite simply to change people’s lives, by finding any employee their ideal job or finding an employer the ideal employee. A-Temp has been servicing the Marlborough area for the past couple of years from its Nelson base, but to provide their clients an even better service, it was decided to open a branch in Blenheim. What had been found in the past, is that A-Temp needed people based locally. So now Julia Knowles has come into the fold. Julia is a long time Marlburian and is running the Blenheim Office. Julia is a very friendly and approachable and understands business herself, so is the ideal person to speak to about finding the right employees, or employers, throughout a wide range of Industries. Julia has been in the recruitment business for many years. A-Temp came about as the owner of A-Temp, Debbie Smith, was trying to find herself some part time work, however was told she didn’t have any skills. Debbie had bought a small dry-cleaning business and after 28 years, and transformed it into a successful commercial laundry with 40 staff. Debbie says a major frustration she had

Christmas treats. We also need baby food, formula... those sorts of items,” she says. Volunteers will be out in force so when you hear the sirens, take your donations out to the collectors. If the appeal is postponed, the Marlborough Community Foodbank Appeal will be held on December 3.

Hope Walk Hundreds turned out on Saturday morning to take part in the second Blenheim HopeWalk. Led by one of the organisers, Vita Vaka, the walkers gathered in Seymour Square, many wearing yellow shirts, and took a 30-40 minute walk down Nelson Street and around into High Street, attracting many honks and calls of support along the way. The suicide and prevention awareness event remembers those lost by suicide and to celebrate life by focusing on positive values. Mini market for Hospice By Celeste Alexander A family with skin problems inspired to make soap for sensitive skin and a woman who suffered a stroke and took up card making as part of her rehabilitation, will be selling their products at the Hospice Pre-Christmas Peek mini market on December 5. The mini market is exclusive to ticket holders who will have the opportunity to purchase a wide range of items. There will be seven stalls at the market which will be located at Hospice Marlborough. The market is just one stop as part of the tour which will take people around local homes decorated in various Christmas themes. Pat Buckingham and daughter Catherine will have a stall selling their ‘Eikenhof Soap’. Pat says their products are homemade, natural and made for sensitive skin. “The idea came to us because we are a family with skin problems, so we began creating our own soap. We use mostly olive oil and coconut oil in our soaps, and we also create kawakawa balm which is harvested just for us in traditional Maori ways, which I then infuse myself. “We also make shaving cream for men and baby mas-

sage oil using our own herbs grown in the garden,” she says. For those wanting some unique Christmas cards and tags, Kathryn Dawson will have her ‘KD’s Cards & Tags’ stall. Kathryn has been making her handmade cards for four years after suffering a stroke. They have since proved to be very popular she says, selling at the Farmers’ Market, Artisan Market, Honey Collection, online and also from her home by appointment. “I love creating personalised and unique cards, and being part of this market is a great way of supporting Hospice Marlborough,” she says. Kathryn will also be selling new potatoes. Other stalls will include wooden Christmas decorations, traditional country preserves, candles, White Wabbit Tea and delicious gluten free mud cakes. The Hospice Pre-Christmas Peek will be held on Sunday, December 2 from 10am - 4pm and tickets for this go on sale on October 1. They cost $55 each and can be purchased from Mayflower Studio on the corner of Queen Street and Maxwell Road, the Hospice Shop in Redwoodtown or online at www. prechristmaspeek.co.nz

By Bill McElhinney Two top country music artists will feature at the Blenheim Country Music Club’s concert day next Sunday, November 25, at the Redwoodtown School hall. Maureen Thompson, a very well known country singer and recording star, is a guest artist. Maureen, originally from Southland, has had over 50 years in country music and has made five trips to Tamworth, in Australia, one to Nashville in the USA and one to Norfolk Island. She has recorded five albums. Also featuring at the concert is Les Thomas, one of the best pedal steel guitar players in New Zealand. Les, also a former Southlander, is very well known in the music industry and has been a member of such well known bands as The Tunesmen, The Countrymen and the Quin Tikis. He has backed many top entertainers such including Eddie Lowe, Slim Dusty, Burl Ives and Suzanne Prentice, and has been inducted into the Southland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “This is a day for our members to entertain the public,” Ross Akerblom, one of the concert organisers says. There will be afternoon tea provided at the event, which starts at 2pm.

Keen bowler Lindsay now leads Bowls Marlborough By Bill McElhinney A lifetime interest in bowls has seen Blenheim’s Lindsay Thomason take up the role of CEO of Bowls Marlborough. “I’ve been playing bowls for 30 years,” Lindsay says. He plays for the Havelock club. “A friend in Nelson got me started and I never looked back.” It’s a game for all ages, Lindsay says, and more young people are joining up these days. “Some of our Marlborough championship players started when they were 10 or 11 years old,” Lindsay says. Former Blenheim bowls star Matt Gallop, who won a bronze medal in the triples at the 2012 World Outdoor Bowls Championship, started playing bowls when he was in college. The previous year Matt had won the national championship fours with his father, Lloyd Gallop. He decided to play bowls

in 1998 when he watched his father, along with Andre Smith, Bob Dowling and Kevin Greenwood, win the national fours in Wellington.’ Blenheim bowler San-

dra Bunt, who plays for the Riverside Club, was named 2016-2017 Marlborough Bowler of the Year. “Bowls is a game anyone can learn,” Lindsay

says. “It is a game a whole family can enjoy together. “And it’s easy to learn, although it won’t take long to learn the fundamentals, but it can take a lifetime to master!

“It’s also ideal for corporate or social events,” Lindsay says. “At this time of the year a lot of businesses will hire a bowls club for an enjoyable social function.”

The racing pigeons from Blenheim were released at Invercargill on Saturday at 6.50 am along with race birds from many lower North Island clubs competing together in the Central Districts Combine. Overcast conditions with intermittent showers were obstacles the flock encountered on their way northwards and as the 700 km journey required good fitness and orienteering levels it caused the birds to arrive individually to their home lofts. First place to Alister Cooper at Renwick whose bird did 60 km/ hr second place to Two Fishers partnership with a close up 59 km/hr, then third place to Chris Bensley on 53 km/hr followed by George Massie with 48 km/hr.
