Mercy mission

By Bill McElhinney It was the sight of a little Ugandan boy wearing a ragged top that melted Kiri Johnson’s heart. Kiri was living in Britain at the time, and was persuaded to go with a friend who had volunteered to work at a Ugandan orphanage. Continued on page 2. PICTURED: Kiri, Miles and Andy Johnson. Andy will be looking after Miles when Kiri heads off to Uganda straight after Christmas.

TWICE WEEKLY

Kiri wants to help kids who have so little By Bill McElhinney Continued from page 1. “I went with her, and met this little boy who was literally just wearing rags,” Kiri says. “It touched my heart, especially coming from a place where we have so much and these folk have so little. “I was determined to go back, and I did and I took some clothes for him and went around looking for him until I found him.” That was nine years ago, and shortly after that Kiri and husband Andy emigrated to New Zealand. “But I’ve always wanted to go back to Uganda,” Kiri says. Since moving to New Zealand, Kiri has studied to become a teacher, and now teaches at the Richmond View School, while Andy works with the local branch of Downers. So straight after Christmas, Kiri will be flying out to Uganda to spend time on two missions during the school summer holidays. “Firstly, I am travelling to Northern Uganda to the largest refugee camp in the world, Bidi Bidi camp, which houses more than one million refugees from the recent conflict in South Sudan,” Kiri says. “Western media coverage of the situation has been slow, and there are just not enough aid agencies to meet the needs. “I am joining a group of Ugandan and South Sudanese pastors to assist them with a sports and music mission at the camps.” Sport is one of Kiri’s great joys. “Physical activity and team games can go a long way to lifting a person’s spirits,” she says. “My goal is to take sports and education equipment to the camp for the kids. All types of equipment are in short supply and most kids hand-make their own footballs.” Kiri plans to help lead football, netball and

running competitions in the camps. “I really want to thank Mitre 10 mega who have donated footballs and sports bottles for these children,” Kiri says. “We are also looking for help with supply of netballs and handballs to take over on the flight. “We don’t want donations of clothing, because there’s no room to take it, but if we get cash, we will buy clothing in Uganda to give to the kids.” On return from the camps, Kiri will head to a small village school in Eastern Uganda where she will be working with a family she has known for many years. “This will be my third trip to the area, but it’s been a long nine years since my last visit,” Kiri says. “In that time I have graduated as a primary teacher and with five years experience under my belt I’m excited to be able to go and work with some of the local teachers, sharing resources, ideas and teaching practices.” Kiri also hopes to raise donations to buy teaching resources to take to Uganda. “My focus is on numeracy and literacy resources. English is the official language of Uganda and most lessons are also conducted in English, which means some of our New Zealand teaching resources can be modified and used in Uganda.” While Kiri is away, Andy will be holding the fort, looking after two-and-a-half year old Miles. “I am so proud of my family supporting me on this venture,” Kiri says “Without Andy’s encouragement and commitment I wouldn’t have been able to make this trip happen.” Cash donations to help Kiri’s mission can be made via the Blenheim Baptist Church, 8 Beaver Road, (03) 578 3676 or admin@ blenheimbaptist.org.nz

Children in the Ugandan refugee camps have very little, so resort to making their own soccer balls.

The sight of this little Ugandan boy dressed in rags prompted Kiri Johnson to go back with clothes for him.

New owners for iconic Marlborough Sounds lodges By Bill McElhinney Two Marlborough families who were pioneers in Marlborough’s seafood industry have joined forces to make Marlborough a high class tourist destination. Burkhart Fisheries have bought a half share in the Marlborough Tour Company, which was established more than 20 years ago by Chris and Sue Godsiff. The two families share a background in the seafood industry, with Marlborough Tour Company born out of trips to the Godsiff mussel farms out of Havelock. The Burkhart family are well known for their long-running Ward-based crayfishing business. Former Marlborough Boys’ College board chairman Tony de Reeper and his wife, Nikki, also bought a small share in the company. Marlborough Tour Company has now bought the popular Furneaux Lodge and Punga Cove Resorts in the Marlborough Sounds. The lodges are located in Endeavour Inlet, Furneaux Lodge. on the world-renowned Queen Charlotte Track. The company also bought The Marlborough Lodge, formerly Old St Mary’s Convent, in 2016 to extend the luxury accommodation options for tourists. Chris says the company plans to grow tourism in Marlborough and make the region a world-class destination. He is also pleased to welcome all existing staff from Punga Cove Resort and Furneaux Lodge to the Marlborough Tour Company family. “We have some fantastic and exciting developments planned for both lodges in the future. For now, it’s business as usual as we head into another busy summer season here in beautiful Marlborough,” Chris says. Man hit by car A 34-year-old man who was crossing Nelson St/State Highway 6 between Hutcheson St and Bomford St on Sunday was hit by a car. He suffered serious injuries and was in a stable condition at Wairau Hospital on Monday. The incident happened not far from where an elderly man died after being hit by a vehicle last month.

Meningococcal warning Nelson Marlborough Health Medical Officer Dr Andrew Lindsay is urging people to be alert to the symptoms of meningococcal disease after four people have been diagnosed this year in Nelson. Andrew says four people have been hospitalised with bacterial meningitis in Nelson this year, all aged between 18-35. In November, Ministry of Health figures showed there were 112 cases of meningococcal disease in 2017 and 96 cases so far this year. The annual number of cases had increased steadily since 2014, when 45 cases were reported.

Public health officials believe a second case of measles confirmed in Marlborough last week is linked to the case reported last week in Milford Sound. A woman in her 20s has been in isolation in Marlborough since November 20 and public health officials say it is unlikely she has infected anyone.

What better way to do that than to put it in the hands of an actor of Dan’s calibre. We had some great times in high school making shows. Some of my greatest memories in the theatre are from that time. “Hopefully after all these years working in the field, we are capable of creating something special for our home town audience.”

MAD DAY DEALS – TODAY ONLY!

By Megan Connolly It was mufti day, but with a twist at Queen Charlotte on Wednesday where students brought in donations for the Picton and Marlborough foodbanks. T he school collected 180.1kgs of food that will be donated to the foodbank this week and distributed to families in need.

“People really thought about it too, it isn’t just canned tomatoes,” student organiser Soraya Timms says. There was a student who wasn’t dressed in mufti but still contributed. The inspiration came from ESL worker at the school, Crossroads manager Emma Munroe. “I just thought that as a

parent it would be easier than trying to find a gold coin,” Emma says. But it was the Junior Student Council who really stepped up to make it happen, creating posters and organising the mufti day. “Our young leaders really stepped up and we’re very proud,” College principal, Betty White, says.

Major football match at Lansdowne Park By Bill McElhinney Lansdowne Park, usually the venue for major rugby matches, will host a major football league match next year. Kevin Forde, New Zealand Football competitions manager, was in Blenheim last week to do a pitch inspection and check out the facilities for the upcoming match. Tasman United will be playing Team Wellington on January 20 at Lansdowne Park and Marlborough Football are delighted to be hosting a National League game in conjunction with Nelson Bays Football and Tasman United, Marlborough Foot-

ball general manager, Andrea Smith-Scott says. Kevin and Matt Campbell, from Tasman United, met with Andrea and Marlborough District Council park contractors Downer staff Annette Hewetson and Mike Porter, for the pitch and facilities inspection. “New Zealand Football were very complimentary about the standard of the pitch and facilities here at Lansdowne Park, and the game is all set to go ahead,” Andrea says. Marlborough footballer Nick Stanton is part of the Tasman United senior team squad.

Nick played for Marlborough’s Rangers AFC this season, and Rangers took out all competitions in Nelson. Nick, who is the goalkeeper is an integral member of the team. Andrea is encouraging all football fans to come along and watch the Tasman United team and show great support from Marlborough. “If it goes well, we could secure a match fixture here each season in the future,” Andrea says. The big match kicks off at 2pm on January 20, and entry is free for everyone, Andrea says.

changing the organisation’s name from the Education Council to the Teaching Council, and returning to teachers the right to elect members to its board. “The profession has been rightly demanding a return to have a say in how their profession is run, so it’s important for teachers to nominate candidates and vote in these elections,” Education Minister Chris Hipkins says. “In the last elections of the old Teachers Council, there was only a 14 percent turnout. These elections are

too important for teachers not to have their voices heard. “Teachers will elect board members from across the profession: a teacher and principal from the both the primary and secondary schools, a teacher and leader from Early Childhood Education, and a teacher educator. “Following the elections, I will appoint a further six members to the Board,” Chris says. Parking a problem Dear Ed, I would like to know who in Marlborough District Council made the decision to ‘redevelop’ two very important (to those who use them) freedom camp reserves (for fully self contained motor homes / caravans) either side of Rai Village; Brown River Reserve and Alfred Stream Reserve? Your recent ‘works’ have reduced the parking space by 50 per cent, were preventing anything other than small vans to medium campers from parking up at either area. I am towing a caravan, all

up 12 meters long, and am glad I parked outside Brown River entry gate and walked down. With all the huge boulders you used to ‘define’ parking spots I am now not be able to use this park-over. I looked online (which shows both sites as they used to be) and carried on to Alfred Stream and unfortunately turned in before realizing you have done the same ‘improvement’ there! Thank goodness no other vehicles parked there as it took me 15 minutes to back around, constantly having to get out and check where the

boulders were in relation to back end of my caravan. I only just managed to get out of there. This decision severely limits all but the smallest of motor homes from parking up, now in carpark designated lines and not with the tree meter gap as the NZMCA allows to prevent fire spread. The boulders take up more room than there is parking space. I invite you to reconsider this ‘upgrade’ and not do this to any other free parkover spots in Marlborough. Old man’s beard Dear Ed, Peter Buckley is quite correct as to how easy it is to get old man’s beard vines out. On one property that had an area of willows and old man’s beard, we grubbed it out. The vine’s root system pulls out relatively easily. However, Peter has got the responsibility factor misplaced. It’s not the responsibility of anglers. The Marlborough District Council has given up on old man’s beard and by some strange thinking argues “it’s everywhere, we can’t control it so we’ll remove it from the pest plant list”. But MDC is responsible for controlling plant pests. What about the Department of Conservation? Is it not responsible for conservation in NZ? Both agencies could be active in making physical effort grubbing out plants or using stump killer as Peter suggests. Both could encourage farmers and other rural residents by advice, issuing stump killer etc., to combat old man’s beard. I’ve said it before. Wallabies - non-existent in Marlborough - are a threat according to MDC pest “experts”. Why not hippos and rhinoceros too? Never mind that councillors approved the pest management strategy and chasing imaginary pests while ignoring real ones. Tony Orman Blenheim

Track stalwart honoured with QSM By Bill McElhinney Queen Charlotte Track stalwart Rod Eatwell knew about his latest honour, but didn’t live to collect it. Rod, 90, died when his car crashed at Koromiko, between Picton and Blenheim, last Wednesday. Rod has been awarded a Queens Service medal in the latest New Year Honours, his son, John, announced at Rod’s funeral at the Church of the Nativity yesterday. The family will collect the award at the official ceremony in April next year. In July this year a sprightly Rod celebrated his 90th birthday at the Woodbourne Tavern, in Renwick, with family and friends. Rod, who farmed at Kenepuru Head, was one of the prime movers in the establishment of the Kenepuru Walkway, which later became the Queen Charlotte Track. He opened his land up for the track and spent more

than 30 years maintaining and improving it. Just last month he and neighbour Pam Gatenby, with help from grandson Steve Emanuel, set up a new toilet on a section of the track. The track is being assessed as one of New Zealand’s new Great Walk, and the judges were inspecting the track last week when Rod died. In 2017 Rod was honoured by the New Zealand Walking Access Commission at a parliamentary ceremony for his work on the track. But although he was widely known as the ‘grandfather of the Queen Charlotte Track,’ Rod had also been generous with his time in other community activities. “Dad continuously worked for the community and to make New Zealand a better place,” his son, John, says. “He ran the Church of Christ Youth Group in Lower Hutt in the 1960s.

“Then he moved to Renwick and operated motels there for 25 years, from 1968 to 1985. “When we moved to Renwick he ran talent quests to raise funds for the construction of the Presbyterian youth hall. “He founded the Renwick branch of Scouts and was scout master from 1971 to 1978, and was Father Christmas at the Renwick School and Play centre from 1973 to 1980, turning up on his horse and gig and throwing lollies he had bought out to the children.” Rod, the husband of the late Kath and Glen, was father and father-in-law of Mary and Stephen Butler, Phoebe Giles, Ruth Parsons, and John and Gabrielle Eatwell; grandad and great-grandad of Danny, Jo, Kelvin, Stephen, Rachel, Keith, Kathleen, Connor, Pania, Fergus, Shaila, Cayden, Henry, Sebastian, and Corban.

Give a gift, help a family By Bill McElhinney Women’s Refuge this week launched its nationwide Give a Gift appeal, asking Kiwis to donate presents to children affected by domestic violence this Christmas. “New Zealand has one of the highest rates of family violence in the world, with an act of domestic violence reported every five and a half minutes,” Women’s Refuge Chief Executive Dr Ang Jury says . “Over Christmas, sadly these numbers surge and it can be common for women who are fleeing from violent relationships to leave with

nothing, which includes the presents under the tree. “In December last year, Women’s Refuge’s 40 safe houses around the country were at capacity, with 1629 children among the occupants,” Ang says. “We are hoping to raise awareness of the Give a Gift campaign and the plight of women and children facing Christmas in a refuge, so, ultimately everyone in their care can celebrate and open a gift on Christmas. “All of the whanau we work with during the festive season just want to give their kids a safe and happy Christ-

mas – we believe every child deserves this,” Ang says. “We need New Zealand’s help so that all the families we work with can open a gift on Christmas day and celebrate the holiday with joy and dignity.” While gifts are needed for all children doing it tough, teenage boys can often be forgotten at Christmas, Ang says. People can contribute to Give a Gift, which runs to December 21, by purchasing a gift and dropping it off at their local Bunnings store in its dedicated collection boxes.

Rod Eatwell celebrated his 90th earlier this year with three of his four children, Phoebe, John and Mary.

Sweet and sustainable Living a healthy, sustainable lifestyle is Awatere couple Linton and Petra Spence. Their philosophy of ‘farm to table’ has seen them produce raw honey packaged in biodegradable pots, as Celeste Alexander finds out. Linton and Petra love nature. They strive to live off their land, near Lake Grassmere, in the most sustainable way possible. They have a milking goat, a vegetable garden, make their own bread and farm their own meat. On top of that they run a small sheep and beef farm and as of recently, are now producing packaged raw honey. “We were looking for something that we could both be involved in,” Petra says. “I was working in the wine industry and after finishing maternity leave we decided then to do something together.” When Linton was younger he and his father had a couple of beehives so it was already something that interested him. “We love being able to produce things ourselves and all that we considered pointed towards bees,” Linton says. The couple started out with three hives then enlisted the help of consultant and experienced beekeeper Trevor Bryant. “He was a fantastic mentor throughout and invaluable, as he had been beekeeping all of his life,” Linton says. That was five years ago and slowly over time their business ‘Flaxbourne Bees’ has evolved, and they now have 230 hives on their property. Traps out to keep pests off Sounds sanctuary By Bill McElhinney Predator-free Blumine Island/ Oruawairua in Queen Charlotte Sound has had extra protection from predators thanks to the assistance of Outward Bound students. Fourteen students and their instructor helped Department

of Conservation rangers put out 48 tracking tunnels around the island, replacing the old ones which were deteriorating. “The tracking tunnels are one of a number of devices used to detect predators such as rats, stoats or weasels. The predators’ footprints are tracked on ink

pads inside the tunnels,” DOC ranger Wendy Sullivan says. “If the tracking tunnels and other devices detect a predator, then we deploy traps to catch and remove them,” DOC biodiversity ranger Dan Palmer says. “The quicker we can detect the presence of a predator on the island, the less harm it can do to our native wildlife. “Our biggest fear is a pregnant female getting on the island. If we don’t detect it, it could quickly escalate to a breeding population.” The students also built 125 boxes to house mouse traps on the island. The relationship between Outward Bound and DOC is important to both parties, Wendy says.

DOC regularly hosts ‘watches’ or groups of students, and they provide approximately 250 volunteer work days a year to DOC. Outward Bound provides another 600 work days a year to conservation groups in Marlborough. The work is undertaken as part of the students’ three-week course. The outdoor education courses focus on building leadership, resilience and team work through hands-on experiences, as well as an opportunity to serve the community. For the students the work experience gives them a new perspective of the environment they often spend time recreating in. “Before this trip I rarely noticed the wooden boxes dotted along tracks,

but after two days working alongside DOC my lens has shifted and I now have a heightened awareness and appreciation towards each tracking tunnel and trap I pass,” instructor Louise Henderson says. “For every staple, screw and bead of sweat that went into crafting and delivering these, I now feel the weight and responsibility that partners with conservation and a commitment to keep our island sanctuaries predator free”. Blumine Island is one of several predator free islands in Queen Charlotte Sound and is open to the public. It is home to several endangered species such as orange-fronted parakeet/kakariki, saddleback/tieke, and rowi kiwi.

By Bill McElhinney It’s a Blenheim institution that’s been going for more than 40 years now and the Blenheim Lions Club Mistletoe Market was back again on Saturday. “We started in 1977 with about 20 stalls down each side of Market Street,” says long time market organiser Charles Riley. Since then the market, a Lions Club of Blenheim community project, has grown to become one of the most popular markets in the Top of the South area. It’s also Blenheim’s largest

Big crowds for Christmas Parade The Blenheim Christmas Parade drew large crowds into the centre of town on Saturday afternoon with families and children lining the streets to get a glimpse of Santa. A jumping castle, ice cream, Santa and musical entertainment meant there was lots of

fun for everyone before the parade started. This year the parade had 28 floats including Harold the Giraffe with The Life Education truck, Ashwood Retirement Village, Blenheim Roller Skating club, and of course, Santa and his sleigh.

Something for everyone

Christmas is a special time for many, celebrated in a variety of ways. But the one commonality that people share is the bringing together of family and friends. What better way to do this and to celebrate the festive season than to take the whole family along to the ‘Marlborough Christmas in the Park’, this Sunday December 9 from 1-5pm at The Glade, Pollard Park. This year’s Marlborough Christmas in the Park has an exciting new format with plenty of free, family fun and entertainment, carols, local performances as well as a variety of food stalls

Celebrity acts to headline event Yes, you heard it correctly! The organising committee for this year’s Marlborough Christmas in the Park will be flying in two headlining acts who will entertain the crowds along with a combined Christmas band made up of local musicians and singers. Taking the stage will be Ben Lummis, the first New Zealand Idol competition winner as well as NZ singer/songwriter Jamie McDell. Ben, in addition to NZ Idol, is a NZ music award winning and platinum selling singer as well as songwriter and public figure. He’s recognised for his R&B, Gospel and Pop music versatility, and performs all around the country as well as overseas.

What’s more, the headline acts will be well known New Zealand music artists Ben Lummis, the first New Zealand Idol winner as well as singer/songwriter Jamie McDell. What more could you want? Mark Sunday on the calendar and get the picnic basket and blanket ready for what will be an enjoyable afternoon celebrating all things Christmas.

Now at age 25, NZ singer/ songwriter Jamie McDell has achieved a prolific amount for someone so young. Being signed to EMI at age 16 sparked the beginning of a successful musical journey, making Jamie McDell a household name across the nation. The year 2018 marks McDell’s return with an independently-released record that celebrates her musical roots and the sounds of her upbringing. Both Ben and Jamie will be performing originals, covers and Christmas carols on the day, so make sure you head along to the Marlborough Christmas in the Park and hear these musicians live.

Get excited for Christmas in the Park The Marlborough Christmas in the Park is a popular community event that has been proudly held each year by the Blenheim Christian Ministers Association (BCMA). The BCMA have been running this free Christmas event for the community for more than 10 years. Every year a dedicated team of volunteers run the event, and this year that group includes event director Alistair Hebberd, event co-ordinator Lynette Leota, stalls manager James McKenzie-Wiley and Paul Fletcher. It’s also supported by a number of local businesses including major sponsors Marlborough Lines, PAK’nSAVE, More FM Marlborough, The Blenheim Sun

and the Marlborough District Council. Event co-ordinator Lynette Leota says there’s plenty to be excited about this year with loads of new and exciting additions to the event lineup. The event kicks off at 1pm with inflatables, music and fun for the whole family - at no cost! “This year we have facepainting, giant zorbs, sumo suits, climbing walls, bouncy castles and other inflatables. These activities are all free. “We wanted an event for the whole family from young children through to grandparents, so make sure you come along and enjoy what will be on offer,” she says.

Obituary - Dallas Reeves

PH 577 7868 Now and talk to the LOCALS

Wednesday

Wednesday

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” These words could not be truer when it comes to describing the outlook on life shared by Dallas Reeves. Dallas, a much loved husband and soulmate of Nicky and an incredible father to Macaela and Caleb passed away peacefully with his family by his side on November 30, 2018. Known for his courage, determination, selflessness and generosity, Dallas will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved him. “He was the most humble,

kind, caring and loving person and had the most infectious smile and laugh which made everyone around him smile too. “He would do anything for anyone and those who knew him would agree, nothing was a ever a problem for Dallas. “As a husband, we had that love where we didn’t have to say anything, we just knew it was special, and he just adored his children,” wife Nicky says. Dallas grew up in Marlborough, playing football, enjoying BMX riding and doing athletics to the age of 14. From there on he played rugby representing

the region in junior and senior grades. He began his working career with an apprenticeship at the Spring Creek Garage which was owned by his parents, Thomas and Noeline Reeves. After travelling overseas he met the love of his life, Nicky, and returned to Marlborough in 1997 where they married and started their family together. Dallas worked as an engineer over the years but always had the dream of starting his own business, which he achieved in 2005 with HR Engineering. He continued to pack as much

into his life as possible by enjoying his many hobbies including motorbike riding, boating, fishing, camping and enjoying the outdoors with his family. His one dream he did fulfill in recent times was the design, build and racing of his stockcar at speedway. “He was so energetic and loved everything that he did. He had a very happy life and as a family we will carry the many beautiful memories that we have from our life together,” Nicky says.

Civic Orchestra fundraising concert By Megan Connolly Marlborough Civic Orchestra is holding a charity fundraiser concert on Saturday at 4pm at Cloudy Bay Funeral Services Chapel. The concert will feature MCO’s Upbeat Development Orchestra and give them a chance to perform alongside more experienced MCO players. “This is really about giving our younger players some real exposure to performing. Our soloists also benefit from experience such as this as they grow,” Chairman of MCO and musician Andy Collier says. Well known local soloists Elgee Leung on cello, Sam Lee on Violin and Kodi Rasmussen on trumpet will be also be playing some pieces. Performers will play some of the greats like Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, The event is door sales only by Barber and Haydn among others. “All the pieces will be quite short a paper Koha where all proceeds and there is a good variety to entertain will go to families in need this Christmas. young and old,” Andy says.

Lots of Lego’s for Foster Hope By Megan Connolly Blenheim children Max and Phoebe Chambers donated over 54 two litre containers of Lego to Foster Hope Marlborough last week and the Lego will be gifted to families and children this Christmas. “It’s nice to give to other children and families who need it more,” both the children say. Aside from the 44 two-litre containers of mixed Lego, there were also 15 sets of Lego Friends with instructions, 11 Lego Creator, Lego Chima and Lego Movie sets with instructions. The 12 and 13-year-olds have been collecting Lego sets since they were around three years old, mum Shona Chambers says. “They would save up their money to buy new sets, or were given them for Christmas and birthday presents,” Shona says. Shona spent around two months organising the Lego so all the sets were together and each container had a variety in them for ultimate building potential. Leonie McLachlan from Foster Hope says each box will be given to a separate child or family, depending on the situation. This year Foster Hope has a Christmas tree at Café Home where the public can take a tag off a tree for a specific age and gender of a child and purchase gifts with that in mind. You can leave donations under the tree until Phoebe and Max Chambers donated over 54 two litre containers full of lego to Foster Hope Marlborough to gift to children in need this Christmas. Mechanic working for world rally champ By Celeste Alexander A Blenheim man is living out his dream of working for World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier, and says he often has moments where he has to “pinch himself”. Luke Campbell has spent the past 12 months working for Sebastien’s WRC rally team, British-based preparation firm M-Sport. The team recently finished the Australian rally where Sebastian won his sixth WRC title, and on his way back ‘home’ to the UK, Luke stopped in to see his family and spoke to the Sun about the highlights of his exciting role.
