Years of care

By Bill McElhinney

For 28 years they’ve offered care and companionship for lonely and housebound Blenheim people, but on Monday the Care and Craft Centre had their last day. “It has run its course,” one of the founders, Dawn Mitchell, says. “When we first started we had up to 60 people attending, but in recent years the numbers have dwindled,” Dawn says.

She puts this down to people moving into rest homes, where there are many organised activities, and a range of other services available in the community today. “And we (the organisers) are getting older, too,” Dawn says. Continued on page 2. Pictured: The Caring and Craft founders: Dawn Mitchell, Judith Kerridge, Shirley Nicol and Grace Wood.

both the Anglican and Baptist churches may start similar activity groups next year on a monthly basis. “We have been entirely self-funded,” Dawn says. “We haven’t relied on any community funding. “And we’re very grateful for all the help we’ve had from the many volunteers over the years.” The craft materials were being packed away after Monday’s session, and crafts that were completed are being donated to various local charities. Care and Craft was founded in Auckland in 1974 by Rewa Henderson, and there as many as 74 centres operating throughout New Zealand. “But they’ve dwindled over the years,” Dawn says, “and there are Long time Caring and Craft participants Ruth Ross, Jane Turnbull and Tilly probably only about 25 still going.” Hadfield thoroughly enjoy the laughter and comradeship.

Dawn, Grace Wood, Judith Kerridge and Shirley Nicol have been at the Nativity Centre in Alfred Street early every Monday morning to set up the various activities for people to enjoy. Those that come along can take part in a range of craft activities while enjoying the companionship of the group. A group of volunteers have dedicated their time and talents to help others create handicrafts in various mediums including painting, sewing, knitting, crochet, and more - just for the love of it. Morning tea and lunch are also provided at a nominal charge before the activities wind up around 2pm. “We get a lot of support from volunteers who help in the kitchen and with the crafts, and the Lions Club men who help us unpack and pack our craft materials,” Judith says. Joan Palmer, who has been attending regularly for the past five years, says it filled a gap for her after her husband died. “It’s the companionship; it’s just what I needed,” Joan says. Dawn’s greatest concern was that the closure would leave a gap in people’s lives, but she is heartened to know that those who have attended regularly have found other avenues Caring and Craft is a bright, busy Mary Hill has enjoyed making friends place where you get to know lots of in the years she has been coming to for fellowship. College gets $9 million The Government has announced it will be investing $9 million into modernising Queen Charlotte College, with 14 classrooms, a technology block, a library and the administration block being refurbished. These buildings have deteriorated over the year and this is a muchneeded investment, Education Minister Chris Hipkins says.

Marlborough Airport wants to hear about your experience of using its facilities. An online survey is underway covering a range of topics including airport parking, security, baggage and the terminal building. Reindeer vandalised Justin Gallop (12) and his grandfather Eddie Gallop have created a number of Christmas displays at the Brayshaw Park Caretakers Cottage, including this suspended train set.

Lighting up Christmas By Celeste Alexander Twelve-year-old Justin Gallop enjoys tinkering away with his tools alongside his grandfather, Eddie Gallop. One of their more recent projects has been a suspended Christmas village complete with working train sets, which sits proudly amongst the Christmas display at the Caretakers Cottage, located within Brayshaw Park. Eddie and wife Alison are the park’s caretakers and for

the past four years, have put up Christmas lights for the public to enjoy. Each year the display gets bigger and bigger, Eddie says. “I’m running out of room around the cottage... it might have to start going up,” he jokes. There are a number of Christmas inflatables including a funny ‘Santa on the loo’, and Santa’s toy shop. Sitting proudly up front on

the fence is a sleigh which Justin built three years ago and solar lights are set up all around the cottage. The best time to view the display is between 9pm11pm. Simply drive into Brayshaw Park. “Don’t be shy, hop out the car and have a look over the fence,” Alison says. “We like to give out candy canes too, we’re all kids at heart.”

Other Christmas lights displays include: 9 Page Street, Blenheim - Outside display 12 Avery Place, Blenheim - conservatory, open to the public. 30 Westhaven Place, Blenheim 1D Meachen Cresent (off Lee St) If you would like to list your Christmas lights display with the Sun, e: celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz

By Bill McElhinney Doing your Christmas shopping online can mean not having to deal with car parking and crowded shops, and sometimes you can get some real bargains. But do you know what protections you have before you hit the check-out button? “If you buy goods or services online, there are some really important things you need to know about who you are buying from,” Alan McEvoy from the Marlborough Citizens Advice Bureau says. “You need this knowledge because it can affect what your consumer rights are if the sale goes wrong,” Alan says. “You’re covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act and the Fair Trading Act for goods and services sold by a business that is based in New Zealand, even if you bid for it in an auction. But if the seller is not a business, or if they are based overseas, you don’t have much protection”. Alan says that if you want to buy from a private seller you can minimise your risk by getting their full name and address (in case you want to track them down later), checking the feedback from past customers and - if at all possible – inspecting the item before you hand over your money. “If you bought your pre-

By Celeste Alexander Grovetown School teaching principal Selena Tonks will be sad to say goodbye to a community she says “looks out for one another”, as she retires from her role after 15 years. “Teaching is an amazing job where you have the very special opportunity to be part of making a difference in a child’s life. Seeing the children overcome a difficulty and learn something, or gain confidence... those are pretty key moments. “It’s not been an easy decision and I have mixed feelings about leaving. I’ll definitely miss a lot of things about this role and especially this place. “Change is an important thing for me and the school, and I’m really lucky to have another role to move into which will still connect me to Grovetown School,” Selena says. Taking over Selena’s role will be Dave Hickin, previously Mayfield School’s deputy principal, as she heads over to REAP working to support small schools throughout the region. When Selena first arrived

Selena Tonks

at Grovetown School, there were 40 students on the role across the years 0-6, and only two classrooms. Today there are 82 students and four classrooms and Selena says there are many similarities between teaching then and now. “We are still all about the relationships and the enjoyment of learning, but the assessments and evidence was a lot less in those days. “Also students who needed learning support are catered for differently now,” she says. Asked what attracted her to teaching, Selena says it was from her own love of primary school.

“I loved school! I used to make my younger brothers play school all the time, and of course I was the teacher,” she laughs. After studying at teachers college Selena had her first year teaching at Bohally before leaving the region to teach at Rangiora. She then returned to Marlborough and taught at Riverlands School, then Spring Creek School as teaching principal before heading to the United States. After returning Selena landed her role as teaching principal at Grovetown School and has remained for 15 years. “I think what I’ve enjoyed is that it’s a small rural community school that has the best of both worlds. It’s rural but not isolated, and it’s the people in this community who make it special,” she says. Stepping away from teaching, Selena says she hopes to spend some time travelling the country with the caravan she’s recently bought. “It’s been a blast! I can honestly say I’ve loved coming to work and it’s been amazing being part of team Grovetown,” she says.

Just getting as many of the family together as possible. It’s very rare because we’re all scattered around the country.

I make a big trifle that we’re always too full to eat on Christmas day so we save it for Boxing Day.

Decorating the house and putting up lights and the tree, and making it all feel festive. It’s about the feeling.

Always get together and have family lunches or dinners.

We put up decorations and it looks like Santa has vomited... It’s all green and red! We also have leftover pavlova on boxing day.

Putting up our decorations on the 1st of December. We put up our tree, tinsel, Christmas lights and get out my advent calendar.

Raiding the garden Dear Ed, Who are the Blenheim types who, once again, have pillaged the garden plots beyond George Conroy Place which are cared for by Salvation Army volunteers? The saddest aspect of this invasion is that only the silver beet had reached maturity. The rest of the plants were still maturing. If these people are so hungry and desperate, there are legitimate avenues available to meet their pressing needs. But this will require a change of heart and attitude: be open and upfront. Lone voice for Blenheim CBD Interesting that Stuart Smith (MP for Kaikoura) seems a lone voice out there calling for the development of the level 1 empty spaces all through the Blenheim CBD when it seems such a simple solution to two problems – lack of space for housing developments and as a means to bring much needed life into the CBD. There seems to be a global move to smaller homes

albeit you don’t see that here perhaps because of the rules governing new developments but overseas people are flocking to the city centres to get away from homes too large, lawns and maintenance. Could it be done here? Absolutely it could. Maybe it’s not for everyone but it would suit sufficient people to make it worth looking into surely?

Am I missing something here as to why this opportunity has not been jumped on? Is there a raft of red tape and bureaucracy getting in the way? Development contributions? What then. Can someone (MDC perhaps) give us an update as to what is required for this opportunity to be seized upon? Curious

Family comes first Dear Ed, The recent report on mental health services in New Zealand missed a major point: the connection between escalating mental health problems and the breakdown of the family unit. University studies conducted in the United States have shown the poorer the quality of relationships, the

greater the probability of major depression. Quality of relationships are a major contributing factor to mental wellness. Poor relationships with one’s spouse/partner and family members significantly increases the risk of depression. If the government is serious about addressing the high

The Fulton Foundation will provide financial assistance to groups in Marlborough who may want to bring a performing artist to Marlborough, but don’t have the funds. The Foundation would help with this provided the visiting artist also agreed to hold workshops and tutorials while they were here. The Foundation can also help youngsters who may need help buying musical instruments or items such as ballet shoes, or may need assistance with tuition travel or membership fees. “This is a wonderful and generous gift,” Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley says. “Local tutors and groups who may be struggling financially can approach the Foundation. This will really help the performing arts in Blenheim.” In order to ensure the Foundation’s finances are kept topped up, a special fundraising concert will be held at the ASB Theatre every year, Kevin says. “We’ll approach various groups around Marlborough and organise a special event featuring local performers. The proceeds will go to the Foundation. It’s Marlborough people helping Marlborough people. It’s great.”

By Bill McElhinney A gift from a generous Marlborough family will give young performers and the performing arts in Marlborough a major boost. The establishment of the Fulton Foundation Marlborough was announced recently at a gathering of arts supporters at the ASB Theatre. The Foundation has been set up by Nick Fulton, with the support of wife Heather, sons Tim and Jeff Fulton and daughter Pru Adams. Nick, who retired to Blenheim 15 years ago, has only just stepped down after a long involvement with the Marlborough Theatre Trust He has been a strong supporter of Marlborough performing arts and a long time member of the Marlborough Sounds Chorus. Tim and Jeff also have musical backgrounds. Tim is a winemaker with a background in marketing, tourism and business development and also plays the guitar. Jeff has been a pipe band drummer, a rock band drummer and is a qualified sound engineer who has worked with Neil Finn, as well as organising a number of major musical events. The brothers are co-owners of the Vines Village and Vines

and bill payments from around mid-February next year. The Paper Plus site will receive a PostCentre Plus fit-out, which includes a new counter. New Zealand Post has been closing standalone post shops as it continues its shifts towards having postal service counters in other shops.

premises will become a standalone branch of Kiwibank. Kiwibank is “committed to investing in a standalone branch” in Blenheim and will be staying in the same location, Kiwibank external communications manager, Kara Tait, says. A NZ Post spokesperson says Paper Plus will begin offering postal services

Jeanette farewells classroom Jeanette Lammas has taught in the same classroom for 25 years at Renwick School. She retires next Monday from a lifelong career in teaching, as Celeste Alexander finds out. Jeanette has always kept a copy of class photographs from every class she taught at Renwick School, and it’s those photos that will leave with her on the final day of term. After saying farewell to students and staff, Jeanette and husband Chris are looking forward to doing some traveling next year in their caravan, but she won’t be cutting ties with the school completely. “I will still relieve if it’s offered... so I’m not losing the contact,” she says. Jeanette began her journey towards her teaching career at age 17. “At college I was really good at accounting, but it was the era where girls went teaching, nursing or into office work. “I couldn’t stand the sight of blood so I couldn’t be a nurse, and my father had decided that teaching was ‘my thing’. “So I did what I was told and studied teaching,” she says. Jeanette began teaching in primary schools in Christchurch. She recalls her first year at Redwood Primary School teaching year one’s. “I was 20 then and it terrified me,” she laughs. “I walked into the classroom with no preparation... not like now. “But I had an amazing mentor teacher who got me on the right path,” she says. She went on to teach at Diamond Harbour School before meeting her husband Chris and moving to Marlborough. Her first teaching position was as a relief teacher in 1993 at Renwick School which then became fulltime the following year. “I’ve been here ever since,” she smiles. Jeanette has taught a range of ages in the same classroom over the 25 year period. In fact one student in her class is the daughter of a man she had taught early on. “I’ve taught both his children now. “It’s been lovely seeing the children of my former students coming through and I’ve even had a few students go on to become teachers,” she says.

Primary school teacher Jeanette Lammas is retiring after 25 years teaching at Renwick School.

In fact, Jeanette’s replacement, Tessa-Jane Power, was also taught by Jeanette. “It’s even funnier when you have surgery done by a former student and they insist on calling me Mrs Lammas,” she laughs. As she prepares for her departure, she quotes something one of her students wrote recently; “It’s sad to leave but I’m looking forward to moving on.” “It is sad and I will miss the people I’ve worked with. “I’ve met some amazing teachers who are good friends now, but it’s time for us to enjoy something different,” she says. Renwick School principal Simon Heath

reflects on Jeanette’s time teaching at the school. “Jeanette has been responsible for the education and learning of close to 1000 students during her time as a teacher here at Renwick School. “She is so respected by her students, many of whom continue to visit her here at school, keep in touch and let her know where they are heading with their lives. “She has also been in the same classroom for her entire time here which means so many memories captured in that classroom space. I think there will be a lump in her throat on December 17.

“Jeanette’s contribution to Renwick has been huge and as a valued senior leader and colleague, has played her part in leading and planning our school development over the last decade in particular. “Her role as our Special Needs co-ordinator has seen her supporting teachers across the school and overseeing special programmes for our students. “Her care and compassion for our students and families of our school is always at the front of her mind in her work. “We will definitely miss Jeanette and wish her the very best for her retirement.”

Top group, top chef for Mussel Festival 2019

Blenheim constable Kyle White and police dog Vako at a dog handler graduation ceremony held last Wednesday. Photo by NZ Police.

Kiwi roots rockers Katchafire will be the headline act at next year's Havelock Mussel Festival.

Dog handler joins Blenheim

By Bill McElhinney New Zealand reggae and rock legends Katchafire and celebrity chef Annabel Langbein will star at next year’s Havelock Mussel Festival. Katchafire will be headlining the entertainment line-up, supported by Marlborough group A Minor Thing and Nelson kings of swing Sun City Soul. Annabel Langbein is joining the festival for the first time, along with Chris Fortune and Paulie Hooton in the culinary tent. “This is a great line up of live music and entertainment, delicious food, fine beer and wine and seafood,” organiser Hans Neilson says. “Summer in Marlborough wouldn’t be complete without

By Celeste Alexander Constable Kyle White and police dog Vako (22months) started their first shift in Blenheim last Friday after graduating from the New Zealand Police Dog Training Centre at Trentham, Upper Hutt, near Wellington. Constable White has been in police for six years and has worked in Wellington and Hastings before being appointed to the Tasman Dog Section. He’s always wanted to be a dog handler and has fostered two police puppies as part of his quest to become a handler. So when a trainee position in Blenheim came up, he applied and was successful. He was paired up with Vako, his first dog, and they have been training locally in Blenheim with qualified handlers and attending early courses at the NZ Police Dog Training Centre as they work to gain their operational qualification.

Annabel Langbein.

the Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival. This event has been serving up a whole ocean of fun for 15 years, and 2019 promises to be the best one yet,” Hans says. Tickets for the March 16 event will go on sale from Friday via Ticketek. The Festival, now in its 15th

year had a change in management last year with Hans taking over the organising. “This year we had The Black Seeds headlining and it transformed the festival, with a 91 per cent increase in ticket sales, so I’m really happy to have secured Katchafire for 2019,” Hans says. “Having a top-notch headline act is undeniable”. The 2019 event will also include all the festival favorites like cooking demonstrations, competitions, market stalls, industry displays, the KidsZone to keep the wee ones busy, and of course another crack at the Guinness World record attempt for mussel opening. Over the years the event has raised over $200,000 for the Marlborough community.

The pair have gone so well together in training that they’ve completed and passed their operational qualification earlier than expected. “I’m looking forward to working with Vako and helping to prevent crime and keep people safe, especially in Marlborough,” constable White says. Inspector Todd Southall, national coordinator, Police Dogs, says the calibre of the handlers and dogs graduating is down to the hard work and determination of the officers themselves, well supported by Dog Section selection and the training processes for handlers and dogs. “We’re a high performing team in Police and positions when they come up are always keenly contested.” There are six handlers in the Tasman District including two teams in Blenheim, three in Nelson and one now in Greymouth.

Volunteers from the Marlborough Hospice Shop enjoyed their Christmas get-together last Thursday and celebrated their recent Trustpower Community Award.

‘Remarkable’ volunteer effort wins award By Celeste Alexander There was plenty to celebrate for the volunteers of the Marlborough Hospice Shop including their recent win at the Trustpower Community Awards. The Hospice Shop was named as being one of the 2018 regional winners at the annual awards held in October. An awards spokesperson

highlighted the “remarkable” effort put in by the 80 volunteers. “The Hospice Shop volunteers contribute a remarkable 1480 hours to the community each and every month, helping to fund an invaluable service - the Marlborough Hospice. “Eighty volunteers give their time every week to assess, clean, repair, price

and present items for sale. It’s a huge hands-on service they provide and the work of the volunteers to keep the essential community service of the Hospice available, could not be underestimated,” they say. The Marlborough Hospice provides specialised palliative care for the members of the community who have life limiting illnesses, along with their whanau.

Fishing retreat part of breast cancer recovery By Megan Connolly Casting for Recovery, where breast cancer survivors can have a weekend away while learning of fly fishing, is coming up again in April next year, and organisers are looking for applicants for the retreat now. The weekend retreat at the luxury Owen River Lodge is completely free and aimed at those who have or have had breast cancer. The weekend is supported by a team of volunteers. The gentle motion of fly casting can be good physical therapy for increasing mobility in the arm and upper body after surgery or radiation. Participants will be shown everything they need to know by professional fly fishing guides

throughout the weekend. “If you haven’t done fly fishing before or hate it, no problem. There are plenty of other experiences on the trip,” long time organiser of the top of the south retreat, Sandra Jermyn, says. The retreat also offers mindfulness sessions, pampering and massages, a talk by Nelson-based professional breast prosthesis and mastectomy bra fitter Helen Clements, plus wonderful food by the Owen River Lodge chef. The retreat has been running in the Top of the South for eight years now, spearheaded by local Sandra. Sandra sent her sister, who had breast cancer at the time, to a retreat in the North Island which she benefited from so much

Janice Nisbett catches her first fish at a recent Casting for Recovery retreat.

Sandra decided to start one up. “It’s a weekend for yourself,” Sandra says. To shake out any of the anxieties or concerns about going on a retreat with strangers, Sandra organises a group meet up over coffee prior to the weekend, so people can discuss what to expect and meet each other. Dance showcase this weekend After a decade of teaching dance, Vanessa Bryant is celebrating by putting on a dance showcase this weekend. The Vanessa Bryant Studio of Dance proudly presents ‘Dancing through the Decades’ featuring students aged four-17 years who will be performing in tap and jazz. “This year is my 10th year of teaching, so I decided to celebrate and showcase some of the most iconic songs that have shaped dancing through each decade from the 1920’s through to today, for example Charleston, Cancan, Elvis, the swing of the 60’s/70’s and the retro 80’s. “The dancers have been working on the routines for the past 12 weeks and really look forward to our annual production every year,” Vanessa says. Dancing through the Decades takes place on Friday, December 14 at 6.30pm, Saturday 15 at 2pm and 6.30pm. Tickets cost $22 for adults, $15 for children and $5 for under-fives, and are available from Versatile Blenheim on Boyce Street, cash sales only.

Jailhouse Rock dancers, Amelia Rowe, Izabel Gilchrist, Baylee Murray and Tyler Barnett will be part of an up and coming showcase this weekend.

Ulysses Club Marlborough branch member Tim Wills led Saturday's Toy Run again this year, spreading plenty of Christmas cheer in his Santa suit.

Bikes roar into town for Toy Run By Celeste Alexander The weather was good and the polished tanks of around 80 motorcycles glistened in the sunshine, marking another successful Toy Run held by the Ulysses Marlborough Branch on Saturday. All types of motorcycles turned out for the Toy Run including vintage and classic, with riders donation and collecting donations of toys for the Salvation Army. Joining local riders were also some from Nelson and Westport, making it another enjoyable event. For young rider Samuel Mullen with his CBR 250, the Toy Run

was a great excuse to get out and meet people. Likewise there are others who take part to support the cause, like Tony Matthews from Havelock who has done the Toy Run for three years on his Suzuki GSX 650F. The youngest member of the Ulysses Marlborough branch is Tim Wills, who had the enjoyment of dressing as Santa and leading the ride from the Woodbourne Tavern through to the Blenheim School. “I’ve been going along on rides with the club since I was 19... Now I’m over 40 I can be a fully fledged member,” he says.

Give Simon or Gemma a call today

This is not in the spirit of Christmas The Blenheim Business Association placed these reindeer around central Blenheim on Saturday morning only to find that by Sunday morning one in Liz Davidson Park had had his foot broken and on Monday morning one in Seymour Square had two legs broken. The public are asked to keep an eye out in the coming week for any sign of vandals.

Bronze for MGC team

inbrief

A bronze medal... that’s what the Marlborough Girls’ College Junior (Yr 9 and 10) water polo team achieved when they went to the South Island Junior Secondary Schools water polo tournament on November 23-25 in Christchurch. In fact the MGC team scored more goals than any other team and in the first two games they won by over 20 goals. Congratulations also goes to Molly Norton and Abbey Moody for being selected in the tournament team. There were nine schools in the tournament which had travelled from all over the South Island for the tournament, which took place over three days. In their first two games the girls played really well, winning comfortably. Their third game was against Rangi Ruru Girls

School, the eventual tournament winners, and this one proved a bit tougher. MGC unfortunately lost 6-7. That put them second in their pool which saw them play Villa Maria later that night which MGC won. An early start on the Sunday morning saw the team playing against St. Margaret’s College, who have won the tournament for a number of years. The scoreline was always close, with St. Margaret’s College going into the fourth quarter with a three goal lead. MGC pulled that back and then got in front with only a few seconds remaining on the clock. St. Ma rga ret’s College then managed to equalise, putting MGC into a penalty shootout which they lost, putting them into a playoff for third and fourth against

Christchurch Girls’ High School. MGC managed to win that game, putting them in a very proud third place. The girls played extremely well, showing great fighting spirit, es-

pecially with such a small squad of eight, where other squads had up to 12 players. Next year this tournament will be held in Marlborough at the Stadium 2000 pool complex.

If anyone is interested in representing MGC next year or playing water polo, contact the water polo coordinator at MGC or the Marlborough Water Polo Club.
