By Bill McElhinney The heat is on, and you can blame the Aussies. But it’s not officially a heatwave. The high pressure ridge and warm, moist air mass sitting over the country has made its way across the Tasman Sea from Australia. And the warm air won’t be moving off any time soon, the MetService says. The temperature in Blenheim on Monday officially hit 35.0 deg. C, the highest in the country. A similar temperature was recorded in Napier. Continued on Page 2. Time to cool off! Hannah Baker-Saunders and Alice Rankin-Saunders enjoy a dip in the outdoor pool at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 on Sunday afternoon as temperatures soar.

More hot days, but don’t say it’s a heatwave Continued from page 1. “The temperatures you see on TV are from the MetService and are recorded at Woodbourne Airport,” Marlborough Research Centre scientist and weather recorder, Rob Agnew, says. “The Blenheim temperatures that we record further inland are usually a bit warmer, but on Monday both Blenheim readings were the same, which is unusual,” Rob says. Another surprise on Monday was a 36.5C reading at Rarangi, where it is usually cooler closer to the sea. “And there was a 36.4C reading at a vineyard near Seddon, which is also closer to the coast,” Rob says. The temperature readings so far show January this year is the third hottest since 1947. The record hottest day was January 10, 1979, which was also the day the Farmers department store in central Blenheim was destroyed in a spectacular blaze. But while Marlborough may have been sweltering in the sumEthan and Dylan Stringer escaped the heat with mum Bec at the outdoor pool mer heat, we haven’t yet had a heatwave. on Sunday afternoon.

A heatwave is defined as five consecutive days when the temperature is 5 degrees above normal. “We’ve had a few hot days,” Rob says. “Tuesday last week was 30.2C and Sunday hit 33.7C, but Thursday and Friday last week were quite cool by comparison. “And last Sunday the easterly wind blew in and the temperature dropped quite dramatically – from 33C to 26C in quite a short time.” The fresh easterly has also kept night temperatures cooler, whereas last January the evening temperatures were much warmer, Rob says. Today and tomorrow were expected to be scorchers again, with temperatures above 30C. The weather is expected to cool as the weekend approaches, with a new front bringing some colder air. However, no records are likely to be broken in the current wave of hot weather. The hottest temperature recorded in the country remains 42.4C at Rangiora on February 7, 1973.

Council calls for water conservation as temperatures rise By Bill McElhinney Conserve water, or face the possibility of water restrictions – that’s the message from the Marlborough District Council as the hot, dry weather continues. Temperatures are expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius over the next five to seven days, which will have a significant effect on the region’s water supplies. Council operations and maintenance engineer, Stephen Rooney, says people need to be careful about their

use of water for irrigation during this period. “Everyone, including Blenheim residents, should avoid irrigating their gardens or crops during the day.” Stephen says. “If people can reduce their water use voluntarily, we may be able to avoid water restrictions, particularly in the Wairau Valley, Picton, Renwick and Havelock. “Over the past couple of summers Renwick residents have done a great job in voluntarily reducing their irrigation

water use. They have shown us voluntary restrictions work and we’re hoping everyone else will follow their lead over the next week or so. “If we can get through the next week, and manage to save water, restrictions may not be needed,” Stephen says. Council has also advised river water irrigation users to monitor their usage and river levels closely. The Rai River fell below the 1 cubic metre per second (cumec) shutoff threshold on Sunday, and all consented

takes from that river must now stop. The Wairau River is very close to the 8 cumec shutoff level, and will drop below that level sometime this week. Most other rivers in the district are dropping, and without rain may also become unavailable . Please do: • Take short showers - baths use far more water • Fix any leaks and dripping taps • Use full loads to wash clothes/dishes, less frequently

• Report water leaks on Council’s systems, e.g. leaking hydrant, valve or toby • Check farm equipment, water troughs, reticulation network and water meters regularly for signs of leakage. Please limit: • Irrigation to early in the morning and late in the evening to reduce water loss due to evaporation • Washing vehicles • Filling swimming pools • Cleaning driveways/patios/houses with hose – use a broom instead.

Truck and ute collide

Priyanka Jose and Sameer Diamond from the Tamarind Restaurant with Marlborough St John members, area administrator Gayle Chambers, ambulance officer Leanne Hodges, St John Martlborough chairman Rod Hill and ambulance officer Tony Cronin.

Dine out for a good cause By Bill McElhinney Two former Wairau Hospital nurses are using their culinary skills to boost the funds of Marlborough St John. Husband and wife Denny Yeldo and Priyanka Jose started up the Tamarind Restaurant in Scott Street a year ago, specialising in the food of southern India. They came to Marlborough five years ago, and initially started a home based business while they were both nurses at Wairau Hospital.

Their food was so popular with hospital staff, nurses, house officers and doctors, they decided to take the plunge and set up their own restaurant in what had previously been the MIA Dining and Wine Cellar. “We have had wonderful support during the year, so we wanted to celebrate by giving something back to the community,” Priyanka says. “As we were both nurses, we thought St John would be a good organisation to support.” Denny, Priyanka and restaurant

manager Sameer Diamond are planning an all-day buffet at the Tamarind this Friday, February 1, to mark their first year in business. “The buffet will run from 11.30am to 9pm and feature a good range of popular dishes, including desserts,” Sameer says. “You can help yourself for $30 a head, and all the proceeds from the day will go to St John.” “This is a huge community gesture, and one that we really appreciate,” St John Marlborough chairman, Rod Hill, says.

“All the money will stay in Marlborough to support the work of St John here. “The money we raise goes towards local St John Youth programmes, purchasing new ambulances and Health Shuttles, and buying vital new equipment; allowing St John to continue its life-saving and life-changing work.” The southern Indian state of Kerala is known as “land of spices,” and it is the tastes of Kerala that feature in the food at the Tamarind.

A truck carrying frozen meat collided with a ute on State Highway 1 in south Marlborough on Monday afternoon. The crash happened near the intersection with Blind River Loop Rd, about a kilometre south of Seddon. Police said the southbound ute had crossed the centre line and smashed into an oncoming heavy truck-andtrailer unit. The Marlborough man driving the ute received moderate injuries and was taken to Wairau Hospital. The truck driver was uninjured.

Fund applications open Applications are open for the Small Townships Programme - Community Project Fund 2019. It funds small, low-cost projects on outdoor public space in Marlborough’s smaller townships. Previous rounds have funded war memorials, a wharf shelter, boat ramps, landscaping, signage and outdoor gym equipment. It does not cover Blenheim or Picton. Projects of up to $10,000 will be considered. Applications close at 5.00 pm on Monday, March 4. Youth Beach Fest draws crowds Charlie Down and Gibson Purdie take a break from swimming for ice creams.

By Megan Connolly It was a beautiful evening and a great turn out on Shelley Beach in Picton for Marlborough Youth Trust’s Beach Fest on Saturday night. The youth music festival was a feast of fun and had everything from henna tattooing and hair threading to live music, fireworks and games. “The event is about displaying the talents of the young people of Marlborough,” one of the organisers,

Rebekah Nafe, says. Queen Charlotte’s Kapa Haka group, five different individual artists and Bcre8ve Dance group got the chance to perform over the course of the night. “We had over 170 youth that attended and around 100 people worked and helped out during the event. “It was great to do something in Picton for the youth out there,” Rebekah says.

Beach Fest was postponed in December due to weather, but the change to January meant it was better weather for swimming. This is only the second time Beach Fest has been held by the Marlborough Youth Trust. The first one was held on the Foreshore at Picton in 2017. Keep an eye out for Marlborough Youth Trust’s next event in March, which will be their Sundown Sports series.

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will bring popular works by Rossini, Haydn, Prokofiev and Brahms to Blenheim next month.

Symphony Orchestra to play in Blenheim next month The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will bring popular works by Rossini, Haydn, Prokofiev and Brahms to Blenheim next month as part of its Classical Journey tour. The concert, led by NZSO Associate Conductor Hamish McKeich, will feature Rossini’s Overture to L’Italiana in Algeri, Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 and Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn. The orchestra will play in the ASB Theatre on Thursday, February 28. Classical Journey is part of the NZSO’s 2019 season line-up. NZSO chief executive Christopher Blake says the soloists, the conductors and the music that the Orchestra will tour around the country in 2019 are outstanding. “Whether you attend NZSO concerts often or are new to the Orchestra, it will be an experience you won’t forget. The soloists and conductors who join us next year are some of the best in the world and we are delighted that several will perform with us for the first

time, including star mezzo-soprano Susan Graham,” he says. “The Beethoven Festival is one of our biggest undertakings, and a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some of the greatest music ever written for orchestra. Maestro de Waart is a musical authority on Beethoven and to have him conduct this festival makes it even more special.” Several New Zealand works will be performed by the NZSO in 2019, including commissions by Kenneth Young and Michael Norris. Section Principal Horn Samuel Jacobs will perform Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto in concerts with German-Japanese conductor Jun Märkl. The NZSO National Youth Orchestra will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2019 with concerts in Auckland and Wellington conducted by NZSO Music Director Emeritus James Judd. For this special event the NYO collaborates with the New Zealand Youth Choir, which celebrates its own 40th anniversary this year.

Eltham road cycle way Dear Ed, The Eltham Road cycle track debacle continues with remedying design faults, the latest being cutting chunks off the kerbing so residents can access their driveways. Very few youngsters use it in fact very few cyclists young or old use it. Most use the Taylor River cycle way. What council committee chair Terry Sloan and his committee have achieved is nothing other than a joke by congesting a main thoroughfare in Eltham Road. They have made it awkward and dangerous for residents driving in and out, general public drivers having trouble navigating at busy times and school parents having to park down side streets away from the drop off area of old that we had already spent money on. All in all, an unjustified expenditure. What is the cost so far which is still rising as sticking plaster is applied? Laughing Ratepayer Blenheim

Dear Ed, The indigenous people of this land, originally named Aotearoa, entered into a contract with Queen Victoria, and those that ascended to that throne, when our declaration of independence was made. God was the witness on that day. In 1836 when the declaration of independence was made we, being the original people of this land, were recognised as a sovereign nation in our own right. That declaration made it possible for us to enter into a treaty with another sovereign nation, which we did. How is it, then, that there are two completely different versions of events?

Keen model glider fliers: Robert Evans, Peter Smith, Phil Elvy, Trev Faulkner, Phil Sparrow, Rex Ashwell, Carl McMillan, Allan Baker and Brian Mogford.

Model fliers send gliders soaring high By Bill McElhinney Blenheim man Rex Ashwell last year set a New Zealand record flying his model glider. Rex is a member of the Marlborough Association of Modellers, which has a section for model aircraft enthusiasts, including a good number who enjoy the challenge of flying model gliders. The Model Aircraft section operates from a model flying site near Tuamarina. The glider club flying days are Wednesdays and Saturday from about 9am until noon. The Tuamarina airfield is located between the stop bank and the Wairau River, approximately 2.1km from Tuamarina on land the modellers have leased from the Marlborough District Council. “It’s a challenge to launch and fly the radio controlled gliders,” Rex says. Some members build and fly their own models, some build from kitset, and some buy and fly Almost Ready to Fly (ARF) model aircraft. Most people new to the hobby start with ARF’s or Ready to Fly (RTF) models. Building from plans or kits can be a very satisfying aspect of the hobby for those with a creative bent. Model aircraft design and aerodynamics is also a fascinating side to the hobby The model gliders can be launched using an electric motor and propeller on the glider, which shuts off once the glider has reached a programmed

height. The gliders can also be launched using a powered model plane to tow them up, or by simply giving them a good heave into the right breeze. “The challenge is to keep the glider aloft by reading the wind conditions, which takes some doing when you’re on the ground,” Rex says. “Experience plays a big part and experienced fliers will get their gliders out as far as you can see at heights of 400 – 500 metres.” The modellers compete in New Zealand-wide competitions, and last year the comparatively small Marlborough Club caused something of a stir by taking first place overall in the national club championships, beating the bigger Wellington and Christchurch clubs in the process. Rex and fellow Blenheim club member Phil Elvy also took first and third place in the soaring competition. Some of the models are large and equipped with relatively expensive components, but it doesn’t cost a lot to get started, Rex says. “You could spend between $300 -$400 to get a model to enjoy this challenging sport,” Rex says. The glider enthusiasts are keen to have more people join them, and welcome visitors to pop out to Tuamarina to see how much fun it can be. Contact them on the Marlborough Modellers website www.mams.org.nz

Paul and Frances giving back Fundraisers and community aid workers, Frances and Paul Eden, sit down with reporter Megan Connolly and talk about volunteering in rural communities in Nepal. Paul and Frances Eden who are in thier early and late seventies have been volunteering their time, fundraising and giving back to the community both in Marlborough and internationally, for more than 22 years. The Blenheim South Rotary Club members are always conscious about giving back to those in need and have spent much of their time and money helping to facilitate projects in Nepal. Nepal is the poorest country in the world outside of Africa, and the poverty rate there has remained at the same level for as long as it has been measured. Last May the couple went to the area of Jubing, Nepal, to oversee the outcome of a project that installed fireplace stoves into 55 homes. Their contact in Nepal is a local schoolteacher named Dhana, who helped organise things while Paul and Frances weren’t there. The couple, who have been avid adventurers and trekked in many places around the world, took their first trip to Nepal in 1983. On their trek, they were stopped on a path by a woman who needed painkillers for a man in her village who had broken his legs falling off a roof. The woman explained they didn’t have enough money to take him to a hospital, or even a quick way of getting him to one. “A Nepalese ambulance is just four men carrying a stretcher,” Paul says. The trekking group helped fund the man to get to hospital, but Paul and Frances found out later that the man passed away. It was this trip that sparked their journey to bring aid to the rural communities of Nepal. Their first aid trip to the Solu Khumbu area was in 2014 with a Rotary Foundation project to distribute clothing and school equipment to the children in the Jubing and Khari Khola area of the lower Solu Khumbu. With the generous help of local members of the Rotary Club of Blenheim South, friends and funding was provided to reroof 15 homes after a massive earthquake that damaged their homes twelve months later. To get to the town of Jubing, where they were overseeing the project, was a steady three days walk from Lukla Airport. It probably only takes Dhana a day and a half, the pair says.

Paul and Frances with new friends in Nepal and right with their traditional scarf called a Kharta.

“So you don’t get anywhere in a hurry,” Paul says. Projects they have worked on in Nepal have varied from facilitating the purchase of roofing iron, providing clothing and sports gear, to building a community hall. People of Jubing have formed a strong relationship with Paul and Frances over the six years of their doing community aid, thanking them with a traditional scarf called a Kharta, and special performances. “It’s very humbling,” Frances says. When they’re not visiting, Dhana updates Paul and Frances by emails, which involves a walk over a high mountain pass to get a signal for his cell phone. “Their lives are completely different. They are small people but boy, they are tough,” Paul says. Their influence has also sparked their friends to do their own community work overseas. What keeps them going back to Nepal is its people, they say.

“Dhana is such a good communicator and the outcomes are quantifiable. We can see where the money is going. “You can achieve a lot with a relatively small amount. For $130 for a fireplace, you can improve the health and wellbeing for a family for generations to come,” Paul says. Currently with funding raised from Rotary and local Marlborough friends, they are funding the polycarbonate glazing of the local school windows, putting solar lighting in a community and health centre, and funding the rebuild of the flour mill. They have received donations sufficient to complete 10 fireplaces and would like to do a further 20 to 30 in total. “It’s very satisfying,” Frances says. The pair has been located in Blenheim for 22 years and still love the lifestyle. But for the well-travelled pair, there are very few things they haven’t done. “I would like to go to Bhutan but now that we’re getting older things are on the back burner,” Frances says.

Road bikes, motocross bikes, ATVs and ag. bikes - experienced motorcycle mechanic Chris Parnwell services them all.

Pony Club stalwart Sandra Wood honoured By Bill McElhinney Long time Marlborough Pony Club stalwart Sandra Wood was recognised at the New Zealand Pony Club conference in Dunedin last year for her many years of dedication to the pony club movement. Sandra was awarded by the 2018 NZPCA Volunteer Gold Service Award, which recognises her 35 years of commitment to Pony Club and its members in Marlborough. Sandra attended her first Pony Club rally as a member of the Marshlands Branch of Marlborough Pony Club in February, 1979, riding to and from rallies with Mrs O’Sullivan from Tuamarina. Sandra won the keenness and attendance trophy in 1982-1984, which showed her commitment to pony club at an early stage. This inspired her to coach from 1985, and she still does so so today.

In 1983, Sandra became an associate committee member of Marshlands, following on with the secretary’s role in 1985-1987. Sandra has held most roles at the Marlborough Pony Club level including secretary/treasurer, head coach and finally the District Commissioner. She provides area level coaching, specialising in horse mastership, and runs the Marlborough Nelson West Coast Area Pony Club’s horse mastership quiz, which involves her travelling all over the top of the South Island. Sandra has acquired an extensive horse mastership kit which she uses in her coaching and examination of all levels. She continues to hold classes in the evenings at her home, all free to Marlborough Pony Club Members. She is also an examiner with the New Zealand Pony Club Association and can examine up to B certificate level.

A life-long passion for motorbikes of all makes and models has led Blenheim man Chris Parnwell to a rewarding career. Chris got his first motorbike –“an old ag. bike,” Chris says, when he was aged 10. Since then he has owned and ridden many more and has spent 14 years as a motorcycle mechanic. When Chris started out, he was nominated for the Motorcycle Apprentice of the Year. He spent 10 years working with another keen Marlborough motorcyclist and mechanic, Peter Grinter. He has also worked with Filco Farm and Sport in Nelson. Chris is the vice-president of the Marlborough Motorcycle Club and is a key event organiser and club supporter. His passion has passed on to his two children, Mitchell and Emma-Rose. Mitchell competes in motocross and Emma-Rose rides for fun and really enjoys being on the back of Dad’s road bike. The family are also into hunting, fishing and all the other outdoor lifestyle opportunities that Marlborough offers. Chris has now decided to start up his own business, Chris Parnwell

Motorcycles, situated at 42 Park Terrace, right next door to Smith and Smith Glass. He’ll be offering a full range of workshop maintenance and servicing, everything from puncture repairs to full engine rebuilds. “I’ll also do complete suspension servicing, including shock rebuilds and re-gassing,” Chris says, “and I’ll be selling tyres and accessories.” Chris specialises in servicing viticulture bikes and ATVs such as mules, something he’s been doing for 13 years. He also services jet skis. And because he’s a road bike rider himself, he also services road bikes, all makes and models. “Now’s the time to get viticulture bikes in for servicing and accessories fitting before the busy bird scaring and harvest season starts,” Chris says. “And get your motocross bikes in for a check and servicing before the motocross season kicks off again.” Chris will be open Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 5pm, and on Saturdays from 8.30pm to 12pm. He also offers a pick-up and delivery service, so if your bike needs attention, give him a call on 022 652 6494, 577 5444, or email parnwellmotorcycles@ gmail.com PBA

Bite and sting searches increase

What attracts silverfish? Silverfish are tiny insects that have a slender flattened body, have a blue/grey shimmer and can often be referred to as carpet sharks or urban silverfish. The pesky silverfish is known to damage things in your home like wallpaper by chewing through the glue, paper documents and fabrics or devouring glue that binds together books. So what attracts them into our homes? Silverfish are attracted to moisture because they need high levels of humidity to survive. You can find them in dark hiding places because temperatures can be higher.

A silverfish’s diet largely consists of carbohydrates and proteins. Especially things like flour, rolled oats, paper, book bindings, glue and insulation. They would also be happy munching on dried beef and dead insects. What about in the back yard? Silverfish are attracted to moist leaf piles, weeds, underneath woodpiles, construction materials, mulch or large forgotten objects lying around outside. Basically, they will find a home under anything that traps moisture. If you have concerns about silverfish in your home, be sure to contact your friendly local pest controller.

The Ministry of Health’s website has recently seen a spike in the number of kiwi’s searching for information on jellyfish stings, wasp and bee stings and spider bites this holiday season between December 24, 2018, and January 6 2019. The number of searches for Jellyfish stings has tripled, going from 264 searches to 853 during the period. Bee and wasp stings search skyrocketed by 86 per cent, general insect stings went up by 73 per cent and spider bites 29 per cent. The Ministry of Health website is a quick way to look up information on how to avoid and treat different types of bites and stings, how to identify what caused the injury and know when it is time to seek out professional help. It comes as no surprise that the summer

holidays saw the spike in searches for Kiwi’s as many tend to treat them themselves instead of seeking professional aid, data shows. Bites and stings can be anything from mild irritations to serious and life-threatening. However many can suffer allergic reactions that can cause even the smallest of bites into something life-threatening. A total of 3,764 people searched for information on spider bites during the Christmas holiday period. However, it is uncommon for there to be a significant danger to the person in the event of the spider bite. Ensure that you avoid the katipo, redback and white-tailed spiders and if you are bitten try and take the spider with you when you get medical advice.

Eddie’s models are eye-catching

ABOVE: A beautifully detailed tow truck with moving parts which Eddie built. Models like this can take 120 hours or more to finish. LEFT: Eddie Love with one of his dinosaur models. The individual pieces can be taken apart and reassembled, which gives youngsters an interesting challenge.

By Bill McElhinney Eddie Love’s handiwork first caught the eye of many people during The Sun Christmas appeal. Eddie donated several of his wooden dinosaurs, which can be taken apart and put together again, offering a rewarding challenge for creative youngsters. The wooden dinos proved popular and sparked many inquiries about where you could get one. The answer is 43 Houldsworth Street, where Eddie has several workshops and a range of amazing models that he has built. “I love designing and building things,” the former mechanic and engineer says. Eddie, whose grandfather was a Love from Arapawa Island, worked as a mechanic for Marlborough Motors, then engineering firm Andrews and Beaven, before moving to Wairau Hospital where he worked as a maintenance engineer for 31 years. Eddie may have retired, but he’s still working, turning out beautifully detailed models and a range of other items. The models come mostly from America, but arrive just as a plan with just a few basics such as wheels and axles. Eddie makes the rest himself before painting the finished items. “I can be a bit obsessive,” He says with a grin. “I add a lot of extras in, such as Perspex for the windows.”

One model has a beautifully finished set of tracks, each link having been made by hand. A large truck and trailer unit with a digger on the back is the result of nearly 300 hours work. “Most of them take 120 hours or more,” Eddie says. There is a model Hummer, trucks, tractors, diggers, but now Eddie has an even bigger project on the go. “I’m building a replica Lotus 7 car,” Eddie says. He’s doing the project with his brother Gavin, in Christchurch, who is a panel beater. The pair have built the chassis and Eddie has a Toyota motor which he has fitted with twin Weber carburettors. “They cost more than the motor,” he says. As a skilled fitter and turner, he has modified a clutch assembly from a Ford Mondeo to fit to the Lotus, which he and Gavin plan to have finished in a year. Eddie’s workshop contains a lathe, a laser cutter and his latest acquisition, a 3D printer, which he is still getting to grips with. Eddie is also a smallbore rif le shooter, and has manufactured scope stands for target shooters which have proved a hit. He also manufactures pistol grips for pistol shooters. “There’s no shortage of things to do,” Eddie says, “but I’m really looking forward to getting the Lotus finished and taking it for a drive around town!”

OMAKA

Omaka a world-wide attraction Omaka Aerodrome is a hidden gem in Marlborough, but is well known on the world stage. With its grassy runways, wide open spaces, world class restoration projects on classic aircraft, and one-of-a-kind aeroplanes, it’s a buzzing community. For aviation enthusiasts, you can’t beat the ideal flying weather that the region offers. With facilities like this, it’s no surprise that a small town like Blenheim has individuals from all over the globe coming to check out its heritage. For Classic Aero Machinery Service’s Tony Wytenburg, the Omaka Aerodrome location is essential to his aircraft restoration work. The several grass runways provide ideal conditions for the many classic aircraft which are built and tested by Tony and

his team. “It hasn’t just got one runway, so classic aircraft can take off into the wind,” Tony says. Omaka has become a bit of a hub for aircraft restoration, Tony says. Paul and Pip Hally from PMH Aviation Limited collect aircraft that have a rich history with the region. They’ve brought back to Marlborough a De Havilland Foxmoth from 1947, one of only seven in the world. With two other parties, they are rebuilding a Waco aircraft, which is the only one of its type in the world, and was previously owned by Marlborough Aero Club in 1936. “Whether you like aviation or not these aircraft are very significant to the region,” Pip says.

Graham Orphan has been publishing the Classic Wings Magazine for 25 years out of Omaka. Having lived in three different countries and travelled many more, Graham chooses to live in Marlborough specifically for the airfield. “I can’t think of a place I’ve lived in or visited, or another community with the richness and ability to work together for the greater good than Omaka,” Graham says. From the world-class Omaka Airshow to the Aviation Heritage Museum and everything else in between, the buzz around Omaka still grows. “People from all over the world are drawn to the positive energy and great activities here. “The community is absolutely remarkable,” Graham says.

A popular place for aviation enthusiasts

The Marlborough Aero Club at Omaka Aerodrome has a long and intertwined history with the Marlborough region and its community. Established in 1928, it is one of the first aero clubs established in New Zealand and the first to own its own plane. Last year the Marlborough Aero Club celebrated its 90 year anniversary in April with an open day, where the public were invited to have a look around the Omaka Aerodrome. The club has over 350 members from all over the country and around the world. The Aero Club teaches students of all ages and stages flying and other vital aircraft skills, whether for recreational or professional

a quick and easy pick as a place to study at for many pilots from around the world. People from Hong Kong, Germany, Australia and the United Kingdom book in to come to Omaka for the course, and often stay for several weeks at a time. Not only do they get to enjoy the

Yak 3 races in America Chief pilot of Fighter Flights, Graeme Frew, and Jay McIntyre of JEM Aviation, have taken a restored Yak 3 Russian World War II bomber across the world for the last two years. The Yak 3, which is typically used for scenic joy rides was taken apart, shipped to the Reno Championship Air Race in America, and pieced back together in an open-air pit there for the public to see. “It was known as a Yak in a Box,” pilot Graeme laughs. Jay, Graeme and their team were the first New Zealand team to enter the competition. “Americans were blown away with what we were doing. “We might have even taught them a few things,” Jay says. Last year, they went back for another go and had great success. They even got on the local news.

“It was great, we were really promoting Marlborough and our destination. It really raised the profile,” Graeme says. The Yak 3 was imported to Marlborough in 2004, was restored, and began its first flights in 2012 and has been flying ever since. “Every time I fly I always see around 30 people having a look,” Graeme says. The Yak 3 scenic flights offer a view of Marlborough you wouldn’t usually get to experience, especially at top speeds of 500 kilometres per hour. Omaka holds a soft spot for Graeme because it was the place he did his first flying lessons. For Jay, Omaka has been the home of JEM Aviation since 2006. “Omaka is a real community of people doing what they love,” Jay says.

Marlborough Helicopters, asset to locals Marlborough Helicopters Ltd has been working out of Omaka for almost 40 years and helping people in Marlborough and Nelson from the skies. “We have a long history with the airfield,” Owen Dodson from Marlborough Helicopters says. “We utilise all the other skills out there.” Over the years they have provided support in farming, forestry, firefighting and civil defences. By being eyes in the sky and the accessibility a Helicopter

They also contribute hugely to the vineyards and forestry companies locally which keeps all the work local. “We are also one of the first people to call in the event of a fire or civil emergency. “We all work together,” Owen says.

Blue cod fishing rule changes proposed By Bill McElhinney The sometimes controversial issue of blue cod fishing regulations is up for discussion again. Fisheries New Zealand is inviting people to have their say on a number of proposed changes to the blue cod fishing regulations. The changes were identified as part of the National Blue Cod Strategy, which was endorsed by Fisheries Minister, Stuart Nash, in December. Inshore Fisheries manager Steve Halley says it’s important that anyone with an interest in the fishery has a chance to have their say on the proposed changes. “The strategy has been built on concerns about the depletion of local blue cod fisheries raised with us via public meetings and online surveys during 2018. Now we want people’s feedback on the first of the proposed rule changes driven by the strategy,” Steve says. “The changes have been developed in partnership with iwi, and a technical advisory group to ensure that the blue cod fishery is sustainable for future generations. “Recommended changes that will apply only to recreational fishers include lowering daily bag limits in the South Island, introducing a twoday accumulation limit, requiring blue cod to be landed in a measurable state, and standardising the Minimum Legal Size of landed blue cod to 33cm nationwide.

New lights to bring new opportunities for hockey International hockey at night in Blenheim could be a reality in future if new lights can be installed at College Park. Hockey Marlborough is looking to replace the current ageing lights with a more modern, eco-friendly option. Acting Chairman, Andrew Nation says the timing is right to upgrade the lights. “The six current towers have been there 20 years and the cost of repairing them has become too high plus there’s issues with the wiring. “We’re pulling down the current halogen lights and looking to replace them with more eco-friendly ones where the light can be contained to just the turf and not reflect onto our neighbours’ properties.”

Andrew says the cost is likely to be $105,000 for the project. “This is a need,” he says. “We are hoping to have this all up and running by the start of the season which is in late April. “It’s crucial with players hitting the ball harder, faster and higher that we have the lighting to match it and ensure player safety.” Marlborough has more than 1000 registered hockey players with teams from Nelson also playing on the two turfs each week during the season. Marlborough also hosted school age-group tournaments each year. A nd rew says h is organisation has approached M a rlb o r oug h D ist r ict Council about helping with the costs of putting together a loan, while other funding

organisations have also been called upon. “We have set up a Givealittle page and are looking for sponsorship opportunities from those willing to help out from the wider Marlborough business and hockey community.” He says the organisation is motivated to ensure the facility is up to standard, but also believes the new lights will allow them to host international hockey at night. “We’ve had international hockey here recently but it’s obviously been during the day so this could open up the possibility of night games as well.” People wanting to help can email office@hockeymarlborough.org.nz or visit the Givealittle page at https://givealittle.co.nz/ cause/hockey-marlborough
