Festival fun

By Bill McElhinney The iconic Marlborough Wine and Food Festival is once again a sell-out. “There are only a few tickets left now,” Harriet Wadworth from Wine Marlborough says. New Zealand’s original and longest running wine and food festival has once again drawn a host of visitors from around the country and overseas, including top Australian chef, Manu Feildel. Festival spokesperson Harriet Wadworth says while they are thrilled with the near sell out, she is not surprised. Continued on page 2. Over 8000 people will flock to the Brancott vineyard on Saturday for the Marlborough Wine and Food festival.

Top line-up for iconic Festival Continued from page 1. “With over 40 wineries and 25 food stalls on-site, an amazing line-up of entertainment including the New Zealand All Stars, and the incredibly popular Culinary Pavilion, the festival is once again proving why it is the country’s longest running,” she says. There will be wine tutorials from the region’s leading winemakers and the very popular Fashion in the Vines competitions. The Culinary Pavilion will again host a bevy of celebrity chefs, including MasterChef New Zealand winners Karena and Casey Bird, Annabelle White, Colin Fassnidge, Nick Honeyman and MC Martin Bosley. And for the first time there will be a home cook versus professional chef cooking contest. Keen local amateur cooks Taylor Keen and Lucy Walter will compete by creating a dish using the same

ingredients, same equipment, as a professional chef, on stage at the Culinary Pavilion. Each will be given a mystery box containing Marlborough produce, with the home cooks getting a 10 minute advantage over the professionals. The home cook and chef will each create their own dish and one professional judge will vote on each dish produced. The winning home chef gets a trophy to keep for a year, tickets to the 2020 Marlborough Wine and Food Festival and a dinner for four guests, cooked by a professional chef. There will also be a line-up of live entertainment throughout the day, featuring top NZ bands Stellar and Ardijah, among others. The locals will also perform including Blenheim singer/songwriter Sarah Brown and the popular and lively Vanuatu String Band. The Marlborough Wine and Food

The popular Vanuatu String Band will entertain the crowds at Saturday's Wine and Food Festival.

Festival began back in 1985 when the region was home to only five wineries. It has since grown in size and stature to become the ultimate New Zealand wine festival.

The Festival is being held at Brancott Vineyard, and the forecast is for clear skies and a sunny 28C. Gates open at 10.30am, wine sales finish at 5.30pm and the Festival winds down from 6pm.

Contractors worked until around 4.30pm on Monday to clean up after a truck carrying wood chips crashed outside The Burleigh about 9.30 Monday morning.

By Bill McElhinney A truck carrying wood chips rolled outside the popular Burleigh Dairy about 9.30 on Monday morning, flattening picnic tables outside the shop and narrowly missing hitting the shop frontage. The CRB truck was going to Nelson Pine Industries. The Burleigh is not open on Mondays, so no one was sitting at the tables, although if it had been another morning it is very likely there would have been people outside the busy pie shop. “We’re lucky there was no one there,” Burleigh co-owner Rod Burdis says. “At 9.30 on Tuesday morning there were at least a dozen people coming and going at the front of the shop. “There are cyclists and walkers that come down here all the time, this time of

morning. It’s very lucky we were closed. “The truck stopped just a metre short of the front door, but apart from the tables, there was no real damage done.” In six years since they took over the shop Rod says they have seen various small items fly off the back of trailers at the corner and trailers come detached from cars. The truck came out of Goldpine, on New Renwick Road, and was turning into Battys Rd when the accident happened. Both roads were reduced to one lane as the truck was cleared. “Since the new Omaka Landing subdivision was developed there’s a lot more traffic now at the intersection,” Rod says. “I think they’ll look at putting a roundabout there at some stage.” Police say the cause of the accident is being investigated.

Hunters help save wetland By Bill McElhinney The contribution hunters have made to saving and restoring Marlborough’s largest surviving lowland freshwater wetland is being highlighted to mark 2019 World Wetlands Day. World Wetlands Day is celebrated around the globe on February 2 to mark the 1971 signing of the Convention on Wetlands - the Ramsar Convention. The theme of this year’s celebrations is “wetlands and climate change”, chosen to raise public awareness about the continuing threat to wetlands. The issue is particularly relevant in Marlborough and Nelson, which have lost more than 97 percent of their original lowland freshwater wetlands to drainage and development. Marlborough’s largest remaining lowland freshwater wetland is now the Para Wetland. It sits alongside the main road between the Picton ferry terminal and Blenheim and is visible to hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. A new billboard has been erected beside the Para for World Wetlands Day. It reads “Another Wetland saved By Fish & Game” and highlights the commitment game bird hunters have made to protecting the habitat. Fish & Game’s Marlborough field officer, Vaughan Lynn, says saving the Para Wetland has been a major project. “Over the years, willow trees had choked the Para, destroying its value as habitat for plant, fish and bird life. “We had to get rid of the willows and as they disappear, the wetland’s conservation value and habitat have improved markedly,” Vaughan says. The project has enjoyed the support of Marlborough winemaker Pernod Ricard, the Department of Conservation, the Community En-

Conserve water now Renwick residents are being strongly encouraged to conserve water as the well level at the Renwick water supply bores continues to fall. Council operations and maintenance engineer, Stephen Rooney, says towards the end of the week they expect to have to reduce what they take from the bores. “Over the past two years, Renwick residents have done a great job in voluntarily reducing their water use. If people can reduce their use now, we can avoid water restrictions later,” Stephen says.

vironment Fund, the Marlborough District Council, Conservation NZ volunteers and others. However, Nelson-Marlborough Fish & Game manager Rhys Barrier points out it is hunters who have footed much of the restoration cost. “The bulk of the project has been funded by game bird hunters through Fish & Game and the Game Bird Habitat Trust,” Rhys says. “Every game bird licence sold

has to have a game bird habitat stamp on it and the money from those stamp sales goes toward restoring wetlands around the country.” While it is compulsory for all game bird hunters to purchase the habitat stamps, any conservation-minded New Zealander can also buy one from NZ Post. “Native birds, fish and plants all benefit from the money raised from the habitat stamp sales. Last

year alone, we distributed tens of thousands of dollars towards protecting, creating and enhancing habitat thanks to the revenue we earned from stamp sales. “In the Para Wetland, that money has helped pay for clearing willows, opening channels and planting thousands of native trees. “The result of that commitment is now visible to Marlborough locals and thousands of tourists getting on and off the ferry,” Rhys says

Fire crews were mopping up yesterday after a fire in a stand of olive and gum tress adjacent to the railway line in Riverlands. The cause of the fire, on a private property at the Riverlands end of Alabama Rd, was unknown. Two more small vegetation fires on Monday have been deemed suspicious. Just after 2pm fire crews were called to a flax bush alight at the end of White St, near the Taylor River, and another fire close by. Helicopters and fire crews were also called to a grass fire in the Waihopai Valley about 4.45pm on Monday.

Filming in Marlborough People interested in the Marlborough Screen Office project are invited to a discussion with Jared Connon, one of New Zealand’s leading film location managers, tomorrow from 5pm to 6.30pm in the Marlborough District Council Chambers.

New bullock unveiled at Renwick Museum By Megan Connolly The new steampunkinspired bullock that will be displayed out the front of Renwick Museum was unveiled on Saturday afternoon to acclaim. Paul Sherwood, from Mad Metal Art and Engineering, spent around 100 working hours on it and cobbled it together using a variety of pieces from around the district. “I started from the aqua wheel on the right thigh and it flowed from there,” Paul says. Renwick Museum committee members Ray and Sandra Welburn are very happy with the outcome and expect the display will

draw a lot of attention. “Every time you look at it you see something different,” Sandra says. The bullock and restored dray that goes with it won’t be placed out the front of the museum until a new mural has been painted on the front and side of the museum. The original bullock and dray were destroyed by a drunk driver in September. Keep an eye out, because Ray and Sandra will be holding a competition in the near future to see what the new bullock will be called. “And it’s not going to be Sandra Bullock,” Ray laughs.

Ray Welburn, artist Paul Sherwood and Sandra Welburn are very pleased with the new steam-punk inspired bullock unveiled on Saturday afternoon, along with the new dray. It will eventually be placed at the front of the Renwick Museum once a mural is completed on the front and side of the building.

Renwick Summer Concert a smash By Megan Connolly It was all happening in Renwick on Saturday afternoon at the Marlborough 4 Fun’s Summer Concert Series in the Renwick Domain, with music, fundraising, and a great community atmosphere. “We are thrilled,” Marlborough 4 Fun Event organiser Krista McGill says. Around six to seven hundred people attended the event. It completely exceeded expectations and Krista is confident it is likely going to be the first of many more similar events in Renwick. “It is a testament to the close-knit community.” The band Second Sunrise performed covers later in the afternoon, which got many children and adults up and dancing.

There were several fundraising efforts with the Renwick Marching club selling candy floss and collecting the rubbish. Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade raced children as part of their training for the Sky Tower Stair Challenge and the Combat Challenge. It was a great safe space for the children to be free to run around, Krista says. “It was nice to see families and friends come together hanging out on picnic blankets.” There are two more Summer Concerts left in the series. Blenheim will be holding a summer concert on February 10 from 5pm to 8pm at Churchill Glade, Pollard Park. Another is planned on the Picton foreshore on February 24 from 6pm to 8pm.

Rights of the people Dear Ed, I’m appalled at the tenor of ‘The Rights of the People’ letter in The Sun last Wednesday. At the risk of being castigated on my opinion which, incidentally, is likely in line with the majority of New Zealanders, silent for fear of being labelled - the comments are inflammatory and totally unnecessary. Yes, there were wrongs and it is acknowledged, to the point that between 19922008 over $952,000,000 was paid out.

As of 2018, over $2.2 billion has been paid out by successive governments to various Iwi on ‘finalised’ claims, yet the ‘never-ending grievance industry’ goes on with many cases re-opened after being ‘full and final’, and there are still something like 53 claims yet to be settled. And still there are demands, as in the letter, about the ‘purse ought to be opened to recompense us for our losses and the hurts.....’ Where has your writer been?

It seems the more the hand goes out, the more is fed into it. At least Prime Minister Muldoon, like him or not, had an intended finite term by which Treaty claims were to be settled so we could (supposedly) move on as something akin to a united Nation. And I would love to see that. Yes, there were wrongs ...but when will it all end? Not for some time, it would seem. One of the People. Blenheim

Dear Ed, As children are now back at school, Rural Women New Zealand urges drivers to be mindful of the 20kmh speed limit when passing school buses to protect the safety of our children. According to the Ministry of Transport’s road crash statistics, there were a total of 379 road deaths for the year of 2018 and the number of fatalities on open roads and rural state highways was significantly higher than urban roads. These tragic figures are particularly concerning for rural families as their children often travel to school along treacherous open roads used by logging trucks or milk tankers, for example. Parents in rural New Zealand should be able to rely on the school bus service as the safest mode of transport for their children. To keep our children safe on their journeys to and from school, New Zealand drivers must adhere to the 20kmh speed limit when passing school buses. Sue Higgins Rural Women NZ

A home away from home at St Andrew’s College As the only independent co-educational boarding school in the South Island, St Andrew’s College has a unique point of difference. “Providing the opportunity to meet the needs of ‘sons and daughters’ is a privilege and gives an authentic family feel” says Director of Boarding, Matt Parr. “Co-educational boarding allows

our students to grow together in a natural and supportive environment, where they can share their boarding journey.” The family atmosphere is another special aspect of the culture in St Andrew’s three boarding houses – one for girls, one for senior boys and one for junior boys. As boys and girls live

alongside each other at St Andrew’s, their varied needs are met, and each house is managed accordingly. “Boarding at St Andrew’s College is unique in culture, full of opportunity and caring in nature. We welcome any enquiry and encourage an overnight stay to experience our culture and meet the team” says Matt.

Healthy school lunch box tips As school returns, so does the dreaded school lunch boxes. You start the year with fresh new ides but by the time August rocks around you’ve run out of steam. Keeping lunch boxes easy and healthy is the trick to beating the blues. Here are some tips to keep it healthy and fun. • Get your kids involved

Give your kids healthy food options from each food group and let them make the final decisions on what goes in their lunch. • Turn healthy foods into fun foods Try creating a theme for each day. • Make your own snacks – and limit processed ones. Kids rely on snacks to keep their energy up, but the type of snack is

important to consider. • Incorporate all food groups A balanced diet includes the food group like fruit, vegetables, whole grains and proteins. • Encourage hydration It’s recommended that schoolaged kids drink between 6-8 cups of water a day – even more in hot weather or if their activity level is high.

Ken Ham shuts up shop It’s the end of a busy business life for popular Marlborough music retailer, Ken Ham and his wife Karenne. Bill McElhinney talks to Ken as he prepares to shut up shop. “It’s all I ever wanted to do, own and run a music business,” Ken Ham says. Thirty-five years ago, on February 28, 1984, that dream came true when Ken and his wife Karenne took over Blenheim business Wayne’s Musical Specialities in what was then Centrepoint Mall. Ken’s passion and people skills saw the business grow and by June 1986 they had moved into their new Scott Street shop, which had been specifically designed to suit Ken’s needs as a totally blind person. “It was designed to allow me to move about freely, and also to suit the specific needs of a musical instrument retailer,” Ken says. Ken was born with partial sight, but a congenital condition meant that his sight gradually faded, and by age 27 he was completely blind. But now the business he always dreamed of owning is closing down. “We’re finishing up on February 28, the same date we began the business 35 years ago,” Ken says. Ken Ham’s Music Works has been on the market for the past seven months and, despite a considerable amount of interest, they have not found a buyer. So at the end of the month, Blenheim will be without a music and instruments retailer for the first time in many decades. “There have been musical retailers in town for many years,” Ken says, rattling off names such as Alan Gardiner, Thompsons music shop, Colin McKenzie and Beggs. Blenheim has a rich musical history and schools, churches and all manner of bands and groups have benefitted from Ken and his team’s knowledge and commitment over the years. “But we decided last year, that before I turned 70, it was time to retire,” Ken says. “That’s when we put the business on the market. We started the winding down process and once we did, we realised how tired we were and how ready we were to retire. “It’s a five and a half and sometimes more days a week business, and because it’s specialised, you can’t just bring peo-

Ken and Karenne Ham outside their Scott Street shop. They will be closing the business at the end of he month.

ple in off the street to help staff it. “But I’ve been fortunate over the years to have had some wonderful people helping in the shop, as well as the great support from Karenne, and our daughter, Raewyn. “And it’s really satisfying when you can help someone achieve their musical ambitions,” Ken says. “It’s also a special kick to sell a quality acoustic piano to someone, as that’s the sort of thing that is a lifetime investment,” Ken says. And they have sold a few, in-

cluding one that had to be hoisted nearly five stories up to a Picton apartment and another that was barged to a home in the Marlborough Sounds. They are disappointed not to have found a buyer, but remain philosophical about the situation. “We’ve enjoyed being a musical drop-in centre and we’ve met so many nice people that we would otherwise never have met,” Ken says. “I feel a bit sad that we won’t continue to be here for our many loyal clients and friends, but we

are looking forward to a less demanding lifestyle.” Ken thinks one reason for the reluctance of buyers investing in retail may be concerns about the number of people now shopping on-line. “Although I don’t know why you would want to buy something as specialised as a musical instrument without having the chance to try it out first, it’s such a tactile and emotional decision” Ken says. With a few weeks to go, they are now hoping to sell the stock

they currently have in the shop, and will also be selling the shop fittings and furnishings. Then Ken and Karenne will retire to what was their holiday home in Tory Channel, although Ken’s musical interests and commitments as president of the Orphans’ Club nationally, which promotes the arts and encourages members to develop their talents, will mean plenty of trips to town and beyond. “We may be retiring, but you haven’t seen the last of us,” Ken says with a smile.

Dining

Dining at its best Welcome to your Summer Dining guide. Here are some of Marlborough’s top spots to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Highfield TerraVin The Good Home Restaurant and Cellar Door Gastropub Marlborough Nestled on a hillside overlooking the Wairau Valley, Highfield TerraVin Restaurant and Cellar Door is producing gorgeous Mediterranean inspired dishes and beautifully elegant local wines. The key to Highfield TerraVins allure is a combination of beauty, flavour, and welcoming atmosphere. Award Winning Head Chef David Haase and Restaurant Owner Stephanie Armstrong have made the restaurant into a Mediterranean oasis amongst the vines of Marlborough. The terrace is always bustling with friends and families sharing plates of “Pollo Fritto,” a helping of vegetarian Gnocchi, or their famous Tapas Platter… and the Specials Board is always teeming with delicious and innovative dishes that always satisfy. Whether it’s the view, the wine, or the food, there is no doubt that you will find something sensational to savour with friends at Highfield TerraVin Vineyard Restaurant and Cellar Door.

The Tamarind If you think you like Indian food, prepare to fall in love with an authentic experience that takes you through South India’s ‘Land of Spices’. The Tamarind restaurant, Blenheim’s best kept secret when it comes to Indian cuisine, is located on Scott Street and specialises only in South Indian, truly authentic food. There are no additives to sweeten the dishes, and chefs use coconut milk as the base instead of creams, something that owners Denny and Priyanka Yeldo are hugely proud of. “Our food is free of dairy, gluten and added sugars... making them healthy. We have taken traditional, authentic dishes from our home state of South India, Kerala, and have not altered the taste. “This is what makes us so unique, we are the only Indian restaurant in Marlborough to offer this style of Indian cuisine,” Denny says.

Cafe 50-81

A medley of flavours from Thai & Vietnamese Cuisine inspired by family recipes

Cafe 50-81 on Main Street has been trading for over 20 months now and has developed a good solid local clientelle, owners Bruce and Hong Trevatt say. What customers are loving most is the variety of delicious food that is on offer which is made fresh onsite. The cabinets are full of filled rolls, homemade sausage rolls and pies, with the pork belly pie being a big hit with customers. On the menu, there are options for breakfast and lunch which are made and served up fresh and for lunch, a selection of freshly cooked, hot dishes including delicious soups, steak sandwiches, pork sliders, warm pork sandwiches and chicken tenders served with salad. And of course there are Hong’s famous, handmade dumplings.

The Good Home is a pub with an eye for the different and the delicious, your new local. Look forward to an enticing array of drinks at the bar, the tempting treats on the menu and the smiles of the friendly folk who’ll serve them to you. Even though it’s hard to define what home means to everyone, there is something it does share. It’s a feeling. A feeling of comfort, the place you can finally let out your breath, relax, unwind and be at ease. The Good Home has recreated this feeling by fashioning spaces for you to feel at ease in and call your own. Spaces to relax; hang with a bunch of friends or the GOOD crew from the office. It’s about lunch with no plans for the afternoon; it’s a cocktail or two after five; an easy dinner with the family or a beer while watching the code.

The Lemongrass The Lemongrass owners Bu-nga Krataitong and Nuttavut Rodsienglum invite you to delight your senses with their innovative and fresh Asian fusion cuisine. With many years of restaurant experience between them, they offer delightful clean and tasty flavours with both Thai and Vietnamese inspired dishes. The menu features many additions Blenheim diners may not have experienced before, including serving meals with red rice, a special variety which is nutty in flavour and has a high nutritional value. The Lemongrass menu also features several Vietnamese dishes devised by Nuttavut including one of his mothers’ recipes for steamed fish with kaffir lime leaf and tamarind curry. The friendly and helpful staff aim to please and The Lemongrass also caters for those who don’t like it too hot and spicy!

A delicious medley of light, fresh flavours from South India that will keep you craving! Gluten free | Dairy free | Sugar free Vegetarian & Vegan options. Made with coconut milk

Summer was made for barbecues Heating Marlborough has your summer evenings and weekend getaways sorted with a wide range of outdoor cooking solutions. At Heating Marlborough you can get barbecue and pizza ovens to suit all your summer outdoor dining needs. “There are portable ones which are great for families and camping right through to 6 burners for the serious BBQers,” owner of Heating Marlborough Brad Millar says. “We’ve got some really good prices on all barbecues at the moment.” Where you’re going to put your BBQ and how many you are wanting to entertain will determine the overall size, sturdiness, and durability of the grill that is best for you.

A smaller barbecue doesn’t mean you don’t get all the same cooking benefits. “You can cook roasts on them too. It’s not just limited to cooking meat. “It’s nice to be able to use your barbecue all year round and get all the cooking smells out of the house,” Brad says. All the barbecues stocked at Heating Marlborough are of high quality and come with a warranty so you know they’re going to see you through many years. If a barbecue and grill isn’t your style, Heating Marlborough also have a variety of outdoor wood fire pizza ovens available. So if you’ve always wanted a grill or wood fire pizza oven, now is the perfect time to pop into 55 Grove Road, Blenheim and see Brad and the team.

Think about winter heating now

One of many pellet fires that you can choose from at Heating Marlborough.

It might be a scorcher outside right now, but it’s the perfect time to be thinking ahead to a warm, toasty winter. Now is the best time to start organising your fireplace ahead of the winter months, Brad Millar, the new owner of Heating Marlborough, says. “Get in now before it gets too busy. A lot of people leave it to the last minute.” The sooner you get it sorted out the less time you will have to wait for the whole package to be completed. “If you leave it until it’s colder you’ll have a four or five-week delay. “If you do it now it’s a lot more flexible. It can be as quick as two

to three weeks,” Brad says. One of the benefits of dealing with Heating Marlborough is that they are an approved supplier and installer with the Marlborough District Council, so ratepayers can add the cost of installing heating to their rates. This is all thanks to the council’s ‘Home Clean Heating Scheme’ which offers an energy efficiency funding service to install approved home insulation and clean heating. This has proved to be a great system for ratepayers in Marlborough as the council follows national clean air standards put in place by the government. Start thinking about staying warm now to save yourself from the chills later in the year.

Brad and Helen take over Heating Marlborough Heating Marlborough’s new owners Brad Millar and Helen Lyons are very excited to be taking on the business after time away from Marlborough. “The opportunity to take over the business came up and I just thought it would be a cool place to work,” Brad says. Brad has been working at Heating Marlborough since late November and Helen is doing Saturday’s after long term owner, Peter Cairns, decided to move on after 12 years. Born and raised mainly in Marlborough, they see it as an opportunity to continue to enjoy the lifestyle the region has on offer. “We’re bringing new enthusiasm and are passionate about good service and carrying on the good name,” Helen says. Helen has worked as an early childhood teacher in the past and now manages the Women’s Refuge while helping with the new family business that is Heating Marlborough. Brad has been in the building trade since he left high school. Starting as an apprentice and working his way up, he’s worked as a project manager in Christchurch and Blenheim for well-known building companies. But Brad has enjoyed the new challenges and experiences since joining the Heating Marlborough team. “I enjoy that not one day is the same. “You could be quoting, install-

We will help you get the fireplace you need.” They have several options that will suit your style and take into consideration your house size and lifestyle needs. “If you’re concerned about finding the right one for you, don’t worry because there are plenty of options available,” Brad says. “Choose a fireplace and all you have to do is think about lighting it.”

back from clients. Brad and Helen are also very grateful for the staff that have come over with them from the previous owners. “It’s quite a satisfying place to work in. A fireplace means a lot to people.”

Alzheimer's Marlborough manager, Diane Tolley is excited to be screening the New Zealand Film Festival hit 'Celia' next Friday at Event Cinemas where the funds will go back into the centre.

Film screening for Alzheimer’s Marlborough By Megan Connolly Alzheimer’s Marlborough will be having an exclusive screening of the New Zealand Film Festival hit, ‘Celia’, at Event Cinemas in Blenheim on February 15 at 6pm. The documentary film follows Celia Lashlie, who was a prominent advocate for social justice and wrote several books about

how to raise boys. Celia was the first woman prison officer at the men’s Rimutaka Prison and later the first woman prison manager at the Christchurch women’s prison. Director and producer of the film, Amanda Miller, will speak about the film and be available afterwards to answer questions.

All the proceeds from the evening will be used to meet the growing demand for services needed by people living with dementia and their age care partners in Marlborough, Diane Tolley, manager of Alzheimer’s Marlborough, says. “People who went to see the film speak very highly of it. It’s worthwhile seeing,” Diane

says. Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased from either the Alzheimer’s Centre on 8 Wither Road or at Ken Ham’s Music Works on Scott Street. But get in quick! Due to limited spaces make sure you have your ticket by this Friday. “You leave the theatre with a lot to think about,” Diane says.

Tattoo artists clean up the competition By Megan Connolly Blenheim tattoo artists, Jarrad Johl and Adele Harris, swept up the competition in Christchurch recently in the second annual International Christchurch Tattoo Expo. This was only the second time the competition has run in Christchurch since the earthquake almost 10 years ago. For Adele and Jarrad, from Picture Perfect Tattoos, it was a great opportunity to put Blenheim on the map. It was Adele’s first time in the competition and she walked out with 3rd in colour geometric, second in black and grey geometric, along with many more awards. A collaboration piece between Jarrad and Adele was awarded a second place. But it was coming first place in colour realism for a tattoo of a Tui on her mum’s thigh that meant the most to her. “It was very exciting and I cried a little when mum got up on stage,” Adele says. Despite all their success at the competition, it was straight back to work Tuesday morning. “Personally, I feel like it’s a big step up knowing you can

and even Croatia. “It was so cool to be around those people,” Adele says. Picture Perfect Tattoo has been operating in Blenheim for almost three years now, with customers flocking from across

Jack gets first winner It takes a brave man to predict victory after 57 unsuccessful attempts but Blenheim’s Jack Best proved he was right on the money with his first driving success at the Kapiti Coast Harness Racing Meeting, on Friday. The 25-year-old hobby driver piloted Bonnie Boy for his mum and trainer Annemarie. “Mum jokingly calls me ’the last resort’,” Jack says. “However, I said to her after he ran at Blenheim (January 18) that if we took him to Kapiti he would win.” Bonnie Boy was the rank outsider of the field on Friday but showed enough gate-speed to lead into the first turn and then showed a strong finishing burst to

surprise the field and his driver. “Halfway down the home straight I thought ‘shoot, I think I’ve got this field covered’.” After Jack had “a few celebratory beers”, the duo teamed up again on the second day of the meeting to run third to complete a successful weekend. “At Blenheim he bruised his heel on day one but I said to Mum that he’d win next time out and so (Friday) was that next race,” he said. “I can be honest with Mum and she can be honest with me and most of the time it’s a positive driving for family and to win on one of her horses is pretty special.” Jack is a tractor-driver

during the day but has been helping out at his family stables since he was nine. They currently have eight in work. “I don’t always get first dibs on the drives, sometimes I’m told I’m the last

resort.” “Often I’ll drive a horse at 5am and then go to work and help out when I get home. “Hopefully it won’t take me as long to get my second winner,” he said.

Blenheim Croquet holds tournament By Bill McElhinney The Blenheim Croquet Club at Pollard Park held their annual tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, drawing 26 teams from Christchurch, Nelson and Blenheim. “We played golf croquet on Friday and Association croquet on Saturday and Sunday,” club captain, David Grigg, says. Golf croquet is a fun shorter form of the game that after a few minutes of tuition can be played by all. “Mastering it will take a little longer, David says. “ If you want to play golf croquet, come to our club room at Pollard Park on a Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday at 1pm.” Association croquet takes longer to learn and to play and is more technical than golf croquet. If you’re interested in learning more, turn up by 12:45pm on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. “We often have people come by on a Sunday, and we’re always happy to have them come and have a go,” David says. “We recently had six new people sign up.”
