She’s a winner!

By Bill McElhinney Renwick mum Lucy Walter kept her cool on Saturday to win the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival New World Culinary Pavilion Chef of the Year title. The contest for home cooks was introduced at the Wine Festival for the first time this year. “I was really nervous to begin with,” Lucy says, “but once I got going, it was a lot of fun!” Lucy and fellow contestant from Blenheim, Taylor Keen, were paired up with 2014 Masterchef winners sisters Karena and Kasey Bird. Continued on page 2. Lucy and Richard Walter with sons Angus and Rory and the sign the boys made after they heard Lucy had won the home cook Chef of the Year title at the Wine and Food Festival.

Renwick Mum takes Festival cook title Continued from page 1. Each pair was given a mystery box of ingredients provided by New World Blenheim and then had 45 minutes to produce a winning dish in front of the audience in the Culinary Pavilion. Lucy worked with Karena and Taylor cooked with Kasey. “We had no idea what was in the mystery box until the competition started,” Lucy says. “But when we saw the ingredients, mussels, oysters, lots of fresh herbs, Karena and I both had similar ideas. We would keep it fresh, serve the oysters raw with a salsa and steam the mussels and serve them with flavoured rice.” Taylor and Kasey took a similar approach, and in the end professional chef and judge Mark Southen, from the O’Connell Street Bistro

in Auckland, declared it was almost a draw. However, the rice produced by Lucy and Karena gave them the edge and Lucy was declared the winner. “We cooked the rice and then added fresh turmeric, garlic, ginger, chilli and lemongrass,” Lucy says. “I think the addition of the fresh turmeric was what really made it.” Lucy’s oysters were served with a fresh salsa made with tomatoes, chilli, coriander and ginger. “Karena and I were having so much fun that we got a bit distracted,” Lucy says. “When it was announced we had only 10 minutes to finish, we really had to focus!” Lucy says cooking with Kasey and Karena was an awesome experience. “They were so willing to share their knowledge and everything else. when I was chopping things up Karena said: ‘Here, use my knife – its better.’ “The other thing they showed us was the importance of timing – what to cook first so everything is ready in time.” Lucy enjoys cooking for

husband Richard and sons Rory, eight, and Angus, 10. The boys had heard about her success and when she arrived home on Saturday she was greeted with a sign they had made: “WELL DONE MUM.” “Richard and I are both gar-

deners,” Lucy says, “so I tend to base meals around what’s fresh in the garden at the time. “I love gardening, and I love being able to go and pick what we eat, so we tend to have a lot of fresh produce and base the protein we cook around that.” FAR LEFT: Marlborough wine and Marlborough mussels are certainly a great combination. Water saving works The Renwick Community has stepped up and reduced their water use after the Marlborough District Council had to reduce the output from the wells. Renwick water demand has reduced over the peak period of 5:00pm to 9:00pm, which has enabled the reservoir to continue to operate at good levels. However, if there is no rain in the next 10 days to boost river levels, there are likely to be to further cut backs at the wells.

Molesworth road closed The road through the Molesworth Station was closed to the public from Sunday because of the extreme fire risk. The closure comes a month early after a hot, dry summer has left a large amount of tinder dry growth in the area. Vintage visitors on show soon at Omaka

By Bill McElhinney A stunning collection of classic and vintage motorcycles will roll into Blenheim towards the end of this week for a major national rally. The National Motorbike Rally, which is held every two years, last came to Blenheim in 1977. Since then it has grown in popularity and become an international event, and thanks to the hard work of a small group of local enthusiasts, the rally is returning to Marlborough. The Marlborough branch of the

Vintage Car Club of New Zealand has around 200 members, and the club committee has been working for the last three years to bring the rally here. “There will be 180 motorbikes and about 250 visitors here for the rally,” club secretary Carol Taylor says. “Accommodation in the town is already booked out!” There will be motorcyclists from Australia, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany and from around New Zealand. There will be vintage motor-

cycles, such as a 1911 Abingdon King Dick, alongside classic motorcycles up to 1988 vintage. The rally, which runs this weekend, February 15-17, includes a display at the Omaka Heritage Centre on the Sunday, so the public can come and see the motorbikes. This will be followed on Monday by a motorcycle tour of the Top of the South, which will be joined by 33 local riders. The motorcyclists will ride two routes through the Top of the South and finish up in Hanmer.

“It’s a big event for Blenheim,” Carol says, “and a chance to see some motorbikes you wouldn’t normally see. “We’re grateful to the Omaka Heritage Centre for giving us the space to hold a display on the Sunday for the public to view.” Marlborough Vintage Car Club operates from their Museum building at Brayshaw Park, which is open every Sunday afternoon at 1pm when visitors are welcome to visit and view a variety of unique and rare vehicles, motor bikes and paraphernalia.

Picton water restrictions The Marlborough District Council has begun water restrictions in Picton as the spate of hot, dry weather continues. Low water levels in the Essons Valley Dam and a high demand for water means all households on the Picton water supply must now adhere to the following restrictions: A property with an even-numbered street address may use a sprinkler only on even-numbered calendar days. A property with an odd-numbered street address may use sprinklers only on odd-numbered calendar days. A sprinkler is any hose which is not held and directed by hand. There is no restriction on hand-held hoses but residents are asked to limit their use. Only one tap may be used at a time to run a sprinkler or sprinkler system. In the case of corner and double sections, the day relates to the street number displayed and used as the property’s address. The restrictions will remain in place until further notice.

My great great uncle is the last person’s name you put a poppy into at the Te Papa War Museum in Wellington.

One of my great great grandads is Thomas Kendall who built the first school in New Zealand.

My mum’s brother was the first Maori pilot in World War II. His name was Johnny Pohe. He was executed for his part in the Great Escape.

My father’s mother came over to New Zealand later, after her husband had settled here. She turned up off the boat wearing furs and he was just in work wear. She was shocked. I don’t think she was prepared for what was here.

My family has always really been hard-working farmers who originally came from the Waikato.

I had a family tree that goes back to the 1300s hanging on my wall. I’m the first one from my family to immigrate to New Zealand from Switzerland.

Dear Ed, Oh really, Fish & Game ‘saved’ Para Swamp! Not only did their poisoning programme devastate the resident native fish population, but the carpet of sprouting willow shoots evident suggests that to maintain the status quo successive poisonings are required. A pity their self-righteous claim to eco-sensitivity did not extend to the NZ grey duck, now considered extinct due to cross-breeding with the exotic mallard game bird, Fish and Game hunters’ main target. In recent months Fish and Game has

demonstrated its true colours, urging their membership to frustrate and sabotage Green MP Eugenie Sage’s brilliant, crucial and long overdue ‘Indigenous Freshwater Fish’ Amendment Bill, designed to provide a safe haven for native species by eradicating introduced trout from a few, critical water-ways, by swamping ( a pun! ) her office with objections. Fish and Game are totally disingenuous. The propaganda about promoting the environment would make Joseph Goebbels proud! Sincerely, W. Hilhorst Blenheim

Loving the cycleway Dear Ed, It’s time people stopped whinging about Beaver Road and the Eltham Road cycleway. My wife and I have enjoyed cycling safely down Eltham Road, along Beaver Road and on to the Taylor River walkway, where we won’t be running down any walkers! Drivers who don’t like the Beaver Road speed bump just need to slow down – that’s what it’s there for, to stop the stupid speedsters! I’ve driven over it quite comfortably. All you have to do is slow down. The sunny days and flat streets make Blenheim and ideal place for cycling, so I hope a lot more people will get off the couch, on their bikes, and enjoy these facilities. Good on you, MDC. I hope we see a lot more cycle-friendly facilities in the town. Pedal Pusher Blenheim

Passion for food and service Mike and Tania Godsall talk to Jacob Page about their thriving CBD Cafe Bakery Deli. Mike and Tania Godsall have found their happy Groundhog Day with their thriving CBD Cafe Bakery Deli and slowing down is not on the agenda any time soon. The secret of Mike and Tania Godsall’s success at CBD Cafe Bakery Deli can’t always be seen at first glance by their customers. Their salads, made before the sun comes up. The pies, tested out on a bunch of mechanics Mike used to work with and made by hand late at night. Or the stickers on the top of their coffee cups which offer a positive message intended to make you feel good long after the caffeine-hit has worn off. The couple and their 13 staff, including their two teenage children have made their slice of The Forum, in Blenheim’s CBD, a must visit since it launched in 2016. Both Mike and Tania come from cheffing and military backgrounds with Tania running the kitchen and Mike the front of house. The cafe has grown from 23 seats when it first started to a capacity of more than 67. The rewards of a lot of behind-the-scenes work are clear and they were rewarded with the Supreme Award at the Marlborough Business Awards late last year. “It was a real shock to win the main award,” Tania says. “We were too busy looking at friends of ours thinking they were going to win so when we got up on stage we were a little lost for words.” “It certainly made us realise how far we’d come in three years,” Mike added. The couple had looked at purchasing the previous cafe at the site nine months earlier than they did, but good careers and the need to research initially postponed their “giant leap” into running a cafe. “We wanted to do our research and see what was needed in the market,” Tania says. “We do things a little differently to most cafes but we soon realised that the really

Mike and Tania Godsall are proud of what they have achieved so far with CBD Cafe Bakery Deli.

good ones all offered great food, fantastic customer service and made people feel important,” she said. “It’s easier to say than to put into practice but we do our best to engage with our customers.” Mike says they will always be hands on bosses. “Because of our military background, we are both hands and feet on the ground people. “We need good staff but we’re also not afraid to put in a long shift. “Both of us have done 5am to 10pm-11pm shifts because that’s what’s required some days,” he says. Tania has four bookshelves of cook books and is always plotting new recipes and flavour

combinations. “My Nana and Dad were chefs and my Dad always used to be amazed at how I could put flavours together and I’ve just been really lucky to have skills like that and the ability to cost-out a dish in my head and refine it when needed,” she says.

“It was a real shock to win the main award” “We do have days where our feet hit the floor in the morning and it feels like Groundhog Day but for the most part we really love it.”

The couple say they love interacting with customers. “People come in for a coffee but often they want to feel important,” Tania says. “Sometimes people are having a really crap day and so we put little stickers on our coffee cups saying ‘you’re looking gorgeous today’ and that can make someone’s day.” In the modern day when everyone is a critic, the couple have a simple request of dissatisfied customers - “tell us”. “We aren’t going to get it right every time but we’d like people to tell us when we’ve made an error so we can make it right straight away,” Mike says. “Sometimes the tough thing about online reviews is that once

they’re online we don’t have a chance to make it right. “Whereas if people came up to us and spoke to our team or us, we’d make sure it was rectified.” The duo say the cafe “has been our life” and they were keen to take a breath before they figure out what is next. “Opportunities pass people every day and you have to take the plunge,” Tania says “It was a helluva risk when we started and a risk when we did an expansion but we did our homework and took the risk and it paid off. “It comes down to the old army, navy and airforce saying Prior Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance,” Mike says.

Ashwood Park’s big sunflower a winner for Age Concern

Catherine Donnelly from Age Concern, right, gets a $500 donation from Ashwood Park Wellness manager Levane Palaro, Ashwood Park resident Ethel Smith, Ang Stanton, Ashwood Park, and resident Craig Stein. Ethel and Craig were among the residents who helped grow a winning sunflower at the retirement village.

By Bill McElhinney A competition to grow a giant sunflower has won $500 for Marlborough Age Concern. Ashwood Park Retirement Village, is part of the Arvida Group, which recently ran a competition among group members to see who could grow the best spuds in a bucket and the biggest sunflower. “Our spuds weren’t much good,” Ashwood Park diversional therapist

Ange Stanton says. “Our friends over the hill in Nelson did far better with those.” But a sunflower planted and nurtured at Ashwood Park was a winner. “It grew and grew,” Ange says. “Several of the residents took good care of it, watering it regularly and even talking to it and playing music to it!” The metres-high plant won the Arvida competition of around 300

entries and the entry fees paid for the competition raised $500, which was presented to Catherine Donnelly from Age Concern in the form of a giant cheque which the Ashwood Park residents had made for the occasion. “We are really grateful for this,” Catherine says. “We intend to use the money to reach out to the many lonely and isolated elderly we have in our community.”

THC Group takes over Portage Hotel By Bill McElhinney The Portage Hotel in the Kenepuru Sound has recently been refurbished and is now being managed by the THC Group. The THC Group is a reinvention of the classic Tourism Hotel Corporation (THC) brand, established by the government in 1955 to encourage the development of international hotel tourism in New Zealand. THC Group chief executive,

Ken Harris, says the organisation includes the hospitality investments arm, THC Properties, and they plan to breathe new life into the hotel. “The property has been completely refurbished with new soft furnishings in all guest rooms, new carpet, flooring, furniture and external paint work,” Ken says. The restaurant and bar, the cafe and the lounge bar and Snapper Bar, which have been closed for three years, have been reopened.

The Portage is just 10 minutes walk from the popular Queen Charlotte Track and hopes to attract more track users, many of who are overseas visitors. In 2017 a railing on the hotel balcony collapsed, and four regulars who were standing next to the railing fell backwards to a concrete path below. One of the injured was Queen Charlotte Track stalwart the late Rod Eatwell.

January heat sets new records By Bill McElhinney Blenheim sweltered in the heat last month, and with a mean maximum temperature of 26.8C, January 2019 is now by far the hottest on record. Sunshine hours were well above average and rainfall was one of the lowest totals on record, Marlborough Research Centre scientist Rob Agnew says. “One year ago I reported that January 2018 has entered the record books as the hottest January in Blenheim for the 87 year period 1932 to 2018,” Rob says. “Quite remarkably Blen-

heim has now recorded the two hottest Januarys for the same 88 year period. “As mentioned last year, the mean temperature of 20.7°C is also equal to Blenheim’s previous hottest ever month – February 1998, which also recorded a mean temperature of 20.7°C,” Rob says. So did we experience a heat wave? “If you do an internet search of heat wave, you will find that the definition varies,” Rob says. “No formal, standardized definition of a heat wave exists. However, the World Meteorological Organisation

defines it as five or more consecutive days during which the daily maximum temperature surpasses the average maximum temperature by 5°C or more. “When the current hot weather is over I strongly suspect that a few regions in New Zealand will have actually experienced a heat wave that meets the criteria of five or more consecutive days with the maximum 5°C or more above average. “But in Blenheim the daily maximum temperature for January is 23.2°C. So Blenheim would require five days in a row with maximum

temperatures of 28.2°C or higher,” Rob says. “From January 1 to 31 there were no more than two days above 28.2°C in a row. “Blenheim came very close to meeting the heat wave criteria from January 27 to 31, with 27, 28 and 30. However, the maximum temperature on January 29 was only 25.8°C, only 2.6°C above average, so to date there has not been a heat wave in Blenheim.” However, January this year has smashed the record for days above 30°C. The previous highest number of days over 30°C were five recorded

employer on changes that can be made to protect their staff. Health and well-being are also important considerations for employers as a valued healthy workforce has economic benefit. These include workstation assessments, Smoking Cessation support, stress and workload management, annual health checks which include glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure testing and life style education with referral to GP if required. “Everything we do involves education to ensure workplaces are made safer by having the right knowledge and equipment to protect workers,” Sally says.

By joining the Fit For Work Team Sally can combine skills gained from her years working as a nurse in various aspects of the Health Care system and more recently for The New Zealand Defence Force at Woodbourne as an Occupational Health Nurse for the last 10 years. Sally works with Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Vocational Consultants. “Enabling people to continue to be fit for work and life is our business speciality. “We’re a one-stop shop, combining our skills and all working together, for the benefit of our clients,” Sally says. total in January, Blenheim was well and truly beaten by Richmond. The final totals for January are not available from NIWA, but Rob says Richmond’s sunshine total for January is likely to be close to 364.3 hours, 46.4 hours ahead of Blenheim. “The total of 364.3 hours is an average of 11.75 hours per day, which I think is likely to be a new record high monthly sunshine total for New Zealand,” Rob says. The night time temperatures in this January were quite a bit cooler than January last year, Rob says.

Tell us about it The Marlborough District Council Road Safety team is urging cyclists and pedestrians to report crashes or near misses to help improve road safety. Regular cycle commuter Luke Davies cycles to town for work and home again every day to save money, keep fit and reduce his impact on the environment. While most motorists appear to be aware of cyclists and share the road according to the road code, Luke has had several “scary” close shaves and one crash in which he was “lucky” to escape with only cuts and bruising and minor damage to his bicycle. Luke recorded the crash and all narrow escapes on the official Bike/Walk Crash or Near Miss Report Form on the Marlborough District Council website, in hopes of highlighting problem areas which need to be improved. “All crashes and near misses need to be reported to identify hotspots that can be looked at for improvement,” Luke says. “If no one knows about

these incidents, nothing will ever be done about it, so it’s up to us to ensure our voices are heard and push for safer roads.” Seymour Street by Countdown Supermarket in central Blenheim seems to be a particularly problematic area, with drivers not giving way or pulling into the cycle lane to go around turning cars, Luke says. Council road safety coordinator Robyn Blackburn says all near misses have the potential to be fatal. “We want more people using active transport to get to school and work, and choosing the safest routes for them,” Robyn says. “But we want people to report any issues they do have to Council so we can build a solid case when advocating to improve any conflict points at intersections, or simply getting across the road. If people are not using active transport because they have had a near miss we want to know about it” Tell us about your ‘near miss’ on www.marlborough.govt.nz and search for ‘Near Miss’.

DRIVE TO SURVIVE NEAR MISS?

Fit For Work, located on High Street, has a new Occupational Health Nurse, Sally Tringham joining the team. In her role as an Occupational Health Nurse, Sally works with employers of Blenheim businesses to minimise or prevent the harmful effects of workplace hazards on health. This supports the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) which requires the health of workers and their working conditions to be monitored to prevent illness or injury. It is well known that more people die from work related disease in NZ than of safety related incidents, however it is the latter that attracts the media’s attention because it’s much more newsworthy. Some industries have a higher level of gradual onset illness which can take over 20 years to appear. These long-term diseases stem from hazards such as wood dust, lead, diesel, paint, fibreglass, asbestos, silica welding fume, lead, and noise. Noise is a huge hazard for New Zealand and costs ACC millions of dollars every year and yet noise is one of the most easily preventable hazards, Sally says. This is where Occupational Health plays

in January 1978 and 1981 and six days in February 1990. The highest maximum temperature of 35.0°C was recorded on Monday, January 28. “This is now the third hottest day on record for Blenheim,” Rob says. “The hottest day on record is January 11, 1979, with 36.0°C. The second hottest day on record is February 8, 1973, with 35.6°C.” A weather station operated by Plant & Food Research, on a vineyard at Rarangi, recorded a maximum temperature of 36.5°C on January 28. Despite the high sunshine

Fall in love with your refreshed self this February… Romance is in the air as Valentine’s Day approaches. This year we want you to fall head over heels with your refreshed self! If you yearn for fewer wrinkles or youthful facial volume, it’s time to visit Lacey Boyd at the Churchill Trust Private Hospital in Blenheim. Lacey has been expertly tutored in facial rejuvenation techniques and treatments by Dr David Orsbourn. Her gentle touch and calming manner, combined with enhanceskin’s ethos of helping clients age gracefully, has already proved to be a winning combination for many Marlburians. Lacey says, “One of the most common concerns our clients express is that they don’t want to look ‘done’ following a cosmedical treatment, and that’s the last thing

we want as well!” She affirms that ageing is part of life, and as people grow older, they should expect their face and bone structure to change, often leaving folds, hollows, sagging and asymmetries. “We can’t, and don’t, aim to turn back the clock on ageing completely. But we pride ourselves on our anatomy and physiology knowledge and can help correct facial asymmetries, resulting in fuller, more balanced features, creating a natural look that’s similar to how you looked a few years back.” The cosmedical services, enhanceskin offers, are then tailored into a treatment plan for you, this might involve just one treatment, or it might be a combination of treatments. Cosmetic Botulinum, a natural, purified protein,

gives such a lovely refreshed look, it’s as if you’ve been on holiday. Lacey says, “Clients have told me that their friends notice the difference, but can’t quite work out why they look so good!”. Lacey also recommends the Liquid Face Lift; this procedure restores the cheeks with youthful volume, lifting the jawline and nasolabial fold. Results can last up to two years, but the treatment can be performed in your lunchtime! enhanceskin also offers lip enhancement to restore your natural lip hydration and border, creating beautifully shaped lips that are elegant, sculpted and well defined, yet subtle and natural looking. Lacey can help you find your perfect cosmedical treatment match at an initial complimentary, no obligation, consultation.

Healthline, Pharmacists, GP or GP Practice Nurse, and Urgent After Hours GP offer professional health advice. If you arrive at Wairau Hospital’s Emergency Department with a non-urgent health concern you may be referred to your GP.

Carol Taylor

Births, deaths and marriages - these are all occasions where life and love are to be celebrated, Carol Taylor says. Carol has been a registered marriage celebrant for more than 10 years and has created countless memorable ceremonies for couples throughout Marlborough. Supporting Carol is her husband Phil who co-ordinates the music and sound. I love my role as a celebrant, bringing people together, sharing love stories with warmth and style. You can relax and enjoy your ceremony, confident in the knowledge I will guide you through the entire process. Being a celebrant is more than just

creating a ceremony, it’s also about supporting the couple through their wedding day. “I sit and listen to what the couple wants so that I have a good understanding of what they want. Often I have couples come to me with no idea of how to go about things, so this is why it’s important to be a good listener.” It’s the same for funerals, Carol says. “More and more people are opting to pre-plan their own ‘life’ celebrations. “Funerals are a celebration of life. We all have something to celebrate no matter how long we have been on this earth. If you would like to know more then I’d be more than happy to talk.”

Anna Bensemann Subdivisions and Boundary Adjustments Civil Engineering Drawings Resource Consents for District Councils Anna Bensemann P 03 578 7299 E anna@blg.nz 30 Maxwell Road, Blenheim | www.blg.nz

Local owner of Baseline Group Marlborough, Anna Bensemann grew up in Marlborough to local farmers Steve and Helen Mackenzie. Having worked in Resource management planning for over 10 years, Anna has always been interested in planning and is often known locally as ‘Anna the Planner’. Her background and passion for the environment drew her to study geography and environmental management at university before working as a senior planner in Christchurch. Now her company, Baseline Group Marlborough, is entering it’s third year of business this year with a strong and comprehensive team behind it.

“We’re very excited to continue to help take the hassle out of a complicated process,” she says. Anna and the dedicated team work with clients to help to remove the stress from obtaining resource consents including water permits and subdivisions both in within Marlborough and neighbouring districts. Resource consents are needed in a wide range of areas like subdivisions, boundary adjustments, some earthworks, coastal activities and residential houses that are outside of the council’s permitted requirements. “Especially this time of year with dryer weather, it can be more important to get water permits,” Anna says.

We are specialists in designing and manufacturing elite skincare formulations, developing quality formulas for compliant, safe and effective personal care and beauty products. We work from our purpose-built facility right here in sunny Blenheim, where we formulate, manufacture and pack under strict quality control standards. Most of your job role will involve assisting our product manufacturers- from hands on manufacturing, through to accurately filling and filing the appropriate paperwork for the products and processes- these include COA’s and MSDS’ among other important information.

Hospice Marlborough receives a cheque from Farmers Blenheim for the Tree of Remembrance Campaign that raised money over Christmas. Farmers donates to Hospice Marlborough By Megan Connolly Over t he Ch r ist ma s period, Farmers stores all over the country participated in a fundraising campaign where shoppers could donate to the Tree of Remembrance to support their local Hospice. For the last five years, Farmers stores have had a Christmas tree displayed where members of the public can fill out a remembrance card to put on the tree or purchase limited edition baubles. All proceeds made in the Blenheim store go straight

back into the local Hospice Marlborough, the donations helping ensure hospice care can remain free. Recently, Blenheim Farmers donated $14,340.70 to Hospice Marlborough from the funds raised over the Christmas period. Hospice Marlborough supports over 1100 patients and their families including some living in remote locations like the Marlborough Sounds. General manager of Hospice Marlborough, Nicki Kitson, is thrilled with the support.

“Not only did the team at Farmers embrace raising funds for our hospice, they also worked as ambassadors for our services, helping the community to better understand the work we do. “The awareness raising that comes from being involved with Farmers is invaluable. The enthusiasm and commitment from all staff and the people of Marlborough have contributed to this amazing result. “Thank you so much,” Nicki says.

TEACHER AIDE – FIXED TERM

As the heat continues around the country, animal owners are being reminded to keep livestock and pets well-watered and with good shelter. Farmers and pet owners have special responsibilities towards their animals during a heat wave, national animal welfare coordinator for the Ministry for Primary Industries, Dr Wayne Ricketts, says. “The measures required are fairly basic common sense things such as making sure animals have enough water, are in shade and there is good airflow, as much as possible,” Wayne says. “This applies to pet own-

ers as well as farmers, and includes lifestyle block and horse owners. “Basically, you’ve got to think of the things that you as a human would do during a heatwave – to get into shade with good ventilation and have plenty of water to drink. It’s all good common sense stuff, yet every time we have a heat wave MPI hears of animals being left without these things.” He says special attention needs to be paid to more vulnerable stock or pets such as those which have recently given birth and their offspring and animals with pre-existing medical conditions.

VINEYARD OPERATORS PERMANENT OR PART TIME

Work with us in a supportive environment where quality outcomes are our goal. You will get a variety of opportunities to share your skills and develop knowledge for a recognised career in vineyard operations.

Owners should also take extra precautions for animals with bare skin, short coats or no pigment in their skin, as they are more susceptible to sunburn. Breeds with short noses (brachycephalic) can’t regulate temperature well, and young, pregnant and lactating animals, or those with long hair or wool are also more vulnerable to heat stress. For farmers it’s critical that sufficient water supplies are available for stock to sustain livestock’s water needs. Wayne says MPI has some good information available online. He is urging all animal owners to check it out.

We are all about supporting our people, we recognise and reward experience, offer on-going practical skill-building opportunities where we place you in a role that matches your skills, training and aspirations. Apply your practical knowledge and skills on a day-to-day basis; • Tractor and machinery operations • Spray applications • Irrigation operations • Hands-on vineyard maintenance • Harvest operations Please apply via our website or call Delegat National Viticulture Office for an application form on (03) 572 6300, 1st Floor, Riverview House, 13 Alfred Street, Blenheim 7201.

Show jumping event comes to Marlborough On the 16th and 17th of February, riders will flock to the Marlborough Equestrian Park for their ESNZ Summer Show Jumping Show. President of the Marlborough Show Jumping committee, Dean Nicholls is very excited about the upcoming show. “Some of the best riders that the South Island has to offer will travel from all over to compete in various classes. “Over the 2 days there will be classes catering to all levels right up to the exciting Grand Prix competition where the rails will go up to 1.50m,” Dean says. There will also be show hunter classes that are judged on style and correctness rather than height and speed. Riders in these classes will be looking to gain points and qualify for ‘Horse of the Year’. “Many of the riders competing at our show are building up to the Land Rover Horse of the Year in March Located in Hastings, this is the biggest show in New Zealand each year, where riders fight it out to win prestigious titles,” Dean says. The Equestrian Park is located on Bothams Bend Road, Spring Creek, and the oval has recently been fenced, allowing spectators a great front

seat view of the action and creates a great atmosphere for competitors and spectators alike. There will be plenty of local riders out their representing Marlborough. Helen Ensor is always tough competition in the amateur series and 1.20m tracks and took out the Teschmaker Trophy at the Marlborough Show earlier in November 2018.
