Lions’ legacy By Bill McElhinney It took two years of planning and a lot of leg work, but the combined efforts of the Blenheim and Beavertown Lions Clubs have seen a big, new LED screen erected in central Blenheim. For over 35 years an electronic clock, erected on what was

Grassmere House, displayed the time and temperature in town, and was hugely popular with Marlburians. When the clock finally stopped in May, 2014, there was a public outcry, but as Mark Brown from More FM explained, the clock had reached the end of its life. Continued on page 2.

The new LED screen will display community events as well as the time and temperature.

President of Beavertown Blenheim Lions Club Carol Taylor and Ross Ayson from the Blenheim Lions Club unveiled a legacy plaque on Thursday afternoon for the new LED screen in Market Street.

Lots to see on new digital billboard Continued from page 1. Servicing the clock had become more and more difficult and the final straw was when the neon tubes in the clock, which were hand made in Auckland, were no longer available. But thanks to the Lions Clubs and support from local businesses, the new giant LED screen with a time and temperature is now on display. “Lions clubs around the world are celebrating 100 years, and each club has been choosing a legacy project,” project convenor Ross Ayson, from Blenheim Lions, says. “We decided that replacing the clock would be our project, and with the support of Beavertown Lions and local business we finally have the new unit installed.” Ross says great support from local organisations and businesses, as well as the funds raised by the Lions Clubs, made the $65,000 project possible. “Nobody that I asked to help with this turned me down, which

is great,” Ross says. The new digital billboard was put in place last Wednesday, and officially unveiled on Thursday. The double-sided sign and clock, at 2.4 by 2.4 metres, with 72 LED panels, is bigger than the old static sign. For the first month only local scenery and local events will be displayed on the screen, Ross says. After that all the sponsors will have free advertising on the screen for 12 months. The screen will eventually display community events and advertise local businesses. The advertising will cover the costs of maintenance, and any profits will be reinvested in the community by the Lions Club. “I’m sure the public will appreciate having the time and temperature on display again after many years without it,” Ross says. “It will be interesting to see how cold or how hot the days are, and the bonus will be seeing community events displayed on the big screen.”

Staff from Cuddon Ltd hoisted the new LED screen into place early last Wednesday morning.

Fire risk prompts diversion on QC Track By Bill McElhinney The tinder dry conditions and growing fire risk have prompted the closure of part of the Queen Charlotte Track. The Track has diversions in place from yesterday at Kenepuru and Torea Saddles, over fears walkers could be trapped should a fire break out. This 23 kilometre section of track, on the Kenepuru Sound side, has been identified as the highest fire risk.

“This section is predominantly on a ridgeline with very few exit points and therefore, in the event of fire, it could prove difficult to remove walkers off the track quickly,” Jacqui Lloyd, from Destination Marlborough, says. “The major risk is a fire starting at the bottom of a hill on Kenepuru Sound side on a dry, hot, high windy day and moving to the top of the hill where the track is. A fire can

travel at great speed.” Independent and freedom walkers and riders would not be allowed into the diversion area, which included campsites at Black Rock and Bay of Many Coves. “Guided walks with DOC concessionaires that meet the guide criteria will still be able to use this section of the track,” Jacqui says. “It is important to note that all other sections of the Queen Charlotte Track, Ship Cove/

Meretoto to Camp Bay, and Torea to Anakiwa, are not affected. “There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure that visitors can still experience the track safely,” Jacqui says. Alternative routes include the road between Punga Cove and Portage and a water taxi from Punga Cove, or visitors can stay longer or arrive earlier at Punga Cove/Camp Bay to Torea and take in a range

of activities from kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and biking. Marlborough District Council announced last week that walkers using the Wither Hills Farm Park should use only the lower tracks around the town boundary, and not venture up the gully or ridge paths. If there was a rapidly-moving fire, people on the hills could be at risk of injury or death, a spokesman said.

Fire in flats Fire crews were called to two adjoining flats in Stephenson Street, near the intersection with Stuart St, just after 2pm on Monday. One flat was badly damaged by fire and there was smoke damage to the adjoining flat, police said. However all occupants were evacuated safely.

Renwick water upgrade on way By Bill McElhinney The days of water bans and water restrictions for Renwick residents are coming to an end. Construction of a new Renwick water reservoir will begin soon, much to the delight of councillor and Renwick resident Cynthia Brooks. “The new reservoir and treatment plant will be a game changer for Renwick,” Cynthia says. “The new reservoir will be three times bigger than the town’s existing capacity, which will help alleviate summer demand pressure on our aquifer. “This is a very significant investment in long-term water manage-

ment for our community and it will help us get through Marlborough’s dry summers.” The aquifer at the Renwick bores has continued to drop in recent weeks, and Renwick residents have been conserving water, with peak demand now down by 25 per cent. The construction contract for the new reservoir includes ground improvement works and building the 1500m3 reinforced, pre-stressed concrete reservoir at 24 River Terrace. The current water storage tanks were installed in the 1970s and have reached the end of their useful life.

The contract has been awarded to Fulton Hogan, who have previous reservoir construction experience. Completion is expected in July next year. “The reservoir is only the first step to improving Renwick’s water supply,” Cynthia says. “The other main steps are completing the new wells at Conders Bend, installing the pipeline from the wells to the new water treatment plant, constructing the treatment plant and introducing home water meters.” The project is funded by the council’s combined water scheme, which spreads the cost of capital water projects across all municipal

supplies in Marlborough. Due to the constrained size of the site, construction of a new water treatment plant can only start after the reservoir is finished. The first stage of the plant’s design should be complete in the next few months; the second stage won’t be completed until later this year. The reservoir will cost $3.36 million, while the overall project budget is $10.1 million. “Once the three year work programme is complete, the community will have a safe and secure supply to meet the national drinking water standards,” Cynthia says. Work on the reservoir is expected to start in the next few weeks.

Police are investigating after a man was hit by a truck and seriously injured at Spring Creek just after 6am on Monday. The accident happened near the intersection of Hillocks Road and Rapaura Road. The man was airlifted to Nelson Hospital in a serious condition.

Picton tracks closed The hot, dry summer has forced the closure of Picton’s Victoria Domain upper tracks. The Tirohanga Track is also closed. Victoria Domain walkers and bikers are asked to use only the lower Bob’s Bay track or the lower Picton to Waikawa marina-to-marina track. Fire and Emergenc y New Zealand recommends that all nonessential spark-hazardous work is rescheduled until the weather is cooler. This includes activities like mowing, scrub cutting and vegetation clearance. If you see a fire, phone 111.

Early grape harvest The Marlborough grape harvest started this week, about 10 days earlier than usual, following a spell of hot, dry weather. The grape harvest normally starts in the first week of March, but early varieties are being picked now, mainly for sparkling wines and low alcohol wines.

Popular adventure camp to benefit from auction Fancy a flight in a Nanchang CJ-6A, a tour to see dolphins in the Marlborough Sounds, or a beautiful pendant created from Christchurch’s lost buildings? These are some of the items up for auction at the Pine Valley Outdoor Centre fundraising event on Friday. Funds raised will go towards an administration centre on site to house a full-time camp manager, and for a new community education programme. Auction organiser and Pine Valley Outdoor Centre committee member, Jess Ellis, says the auction has already attracted some hugely generous donations from the Marlborough community. Prizes include flights with Sounds Air, an E-Ko Tours tour for two, a family pass to Koru Native Wildlife Centre, a family

day pass to Lochmara Lodge, a weekend at a beachfront bach at Ngakuta Bay and “a particularly unique prize that will no doubt attract some vigorous bidding is a ride in a Nanchang CJ-6A, donated by its Marlborough owners, Mark and Kate O’Sullivan,” says Jess. “And, because our fundraising auction night falls on the anniversary of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, we’ll also be auctioning a truly stunning carved pendant made from reclaimed rimu sourced from fallen Christchurch buildings in Christchurch. “This piece was kindly gifted by Brereton Jewellers in Picton.” The auction will be led by real estate salesperson Michael Rea from First National Real Estate Marlborough, and live music will be provided by Mitch Alderli-

este, formerly of Marlborough and now living in Wellington. Jess says the level of support offered by the Marlborough community for the Pine Valley Outdoor Centre so far has been heartening, and shows that the facility is well-loved by many. “The Centre has been used by Marlborough children and their families for 35 years. Supporting it now by raising funds to future-proof the centre means that it will still be there for future generations to enjoy, which is ultimately what we’re hoping to achieve.” The auction is at 7pm at the Clubs of Marlborough. Tickets cost $45 per person, or $400 to book a table for 10, and includes a buffet dinner and entertainment. To book, email admin@pinevalleyoutdoors.org.nz or visit the Pine Valley Outdoor Centre.

Local historian John Orchard is leading a bus trip down the Coast, during which he will provide commentary, laminated captioned photographs, and scientific material about points of interest along the way. John has been leading the schools-based Heritage Education programme since 2000, and has received two awards from the Marlborough District Council for Services to the Community and Heritage. “Many points will be viewed from the bus at brief stops, and more time will be allowed to be off the bus at major stops,” John says. Plenty of face packs at Muddy Buddy By Bill McElhinney There were face packs galore, but this is no beauty parade – it was the Sport Tasman Muddy Buddy and it was way more fun. Nearly 500 people turned out at the Havelock Estuary on Saturday for the event.

They came in teams, in an array of costumes and with one aim – to slip, slide, and wriggle around the course. Participants could do one to three laps of the 1km course which included two slides, a cargo net to crawl under and a zigzag section, all designed

to get them as muddy as possible. There was a prize for the most ‘out there’ costume, plus a plethora of spot prizes which were drawn at the end of the event. “This was our biggest ever event,” Jane Miles, from Sport

Tasman, says. “And we were thrilled at the number of family groups who came this year.” Jane says the event is all about having fun, with very few rules apart from competitors having to wear taped on shoes for safety reasons and

stay within the designated course markers. “The Havelock Lions Club were there running a barbecue, and they raised $550 which they will use to help youth to attend Outward Bound. “The funds raised on the day will go to Havelock Vision

20/20, a group which does a great deal for the Havelock community. “Their volunteers were there on the day to help with course set-up and registrations. “It was a great success, so we’re making plans for Muddy Buddy 2020,” Jane says.

“It’s a timely acquisition.”

“It’s lovely. It’s nice to be able to see the temperature, and the LED makes the screen bright. However, I didn’t notice it until it was pointed out.”

“It’s handy that it has the temperature on it. I can look up at it and go, ‘Oh, it’s 24 degrees!’ It’s definitely good for tourists.”

“It looks good! Would be useful for advertising, and it’s great to see the time.”

“It’s excellent. We should have them at every corner. It’s nice to have this new clock. The others didn’t work!”

“It’s a good idea. LED lighting is clever - to be honest, I never paid attention to the old one.”

Letters to the editor

Dear Ed, As a daily early morning walker to Mount Vernon and beyond I am ever mindful of the extreme fire risk that exists at present. Indeed, it came as no surprise when my favourite walking tracks on the Farm Park were closed from Thursday afternoon. Last Sunday on my morning walk I was horrified to find three “fag ends” (cigarette ends) around the water fountain at “Stonehenge Lookout” that were not there the previous morning. I gave them a good soak, wrapped them in a bit of tissue and put them into my pack. After re-hydration I set off to the trig station where I made use of “Amelia’s memorial bench” to empty some small stones from my shoes. I just couldn’t believe what I saw on the ground in front of the seat - the remnants of two “roll your own ciggies” which again were not there on Saturday morning. Whilst it is commendable that these smokers are making an effort to get some exercise, it is totally irresponsible and absolutely stupid that they can’t wait till they get back home before lighting up. Dear Ed, Congratulations to the Havelock Theatre Company for a very worthwhile evenings entertainment last week. Congratulations to the entire cast who performed in two clever one act plays and to the backstage crew and the front of house management. You obviously enjoy what you are doing and high credit is due to you all. May it continue. Jill Rodgerson Blenheim

Invading my privacy Dear Ed, The other evening in Blenheim a drone buzzed over our property in Blenheim, not once but several times. Lucky for it - and the prying owner - I

didn’t have my shotgun handy. It started up a conversation at the barbecue and the overwhelming vote was they should be banned. Can the Marlborough District Council

pass a bylaw to this effect please? Besides, drones have been a proven menace around airfields. Flora Abutilon Blenheim

A war hero remembered Dear Ed, I notice with interest, one of the people interviewed for Word on the Street was a nephew of Johnny Pohe, the first Maori pilot of WW2, who was indeed executed for his part in the Great Escape.

This was not just a fanciful Hollywood movie but a real life episode in WW2 and Johnny Pohe was one of two New Zealanders executed, or some would say murdered, by the Gestapo for their part in the escape.

I have read two books about this and Johnny Pohe was a truly noble, educated and brave man who would be a credit in anyone’s family tree. Neil Gibbs Blenheim

Old whaler has no regrets Ron Perano has led a life of adventure and no regrets. He talks to reporter Jacob Page about the various twists in his tale, his family’s whaling legacy and his passion for the sea. Ron Perano has a philosophical approach to his life whaling and his adventures on the sea. “There’s more money being made out of whales with tourism than we ever made catching them,” the 84-year-old says. “I don’t regret it (hunting whales) it’s just what we did at that time. “Whale oil was a very sought-after commodity particularly during wartime because you could get glycerin which was a main ingredient of explosives.” Ron was always destined for a life on the sea. He would row with his siblings from Boulder Bank to Dillon’s Point School. “We didn’t start school until we were seven because of the distance we had to travel. “I didn’t like school, in fact, I hated every moment of it,” he says He believes he learnt more on the journey to school than he ever did in the classroom. His subsequent education was learning the skills of seamanship and whaling at Tory Channel at the famed Perano whaling station followed by working as a shearer and later as an entrepreneur running his own business.

“It was better than I thought it would be, absolute magic” His marine experiences led him to build the vessel ‘Giovanni’ which was used for servicing mussel farms and he captained three circumnavigations of the South Island. The building of the whaler “Swiftsure” and its participation in the pageant marking the Queen’s Jubilee was “the proudest moment of my life”, he says. He also said a trip to Antarctica was a highlight he will never forget. “I’d always dreamt of going to the Antarctic and we heard there was a guy in Christchurch who was taking passengers in a small Russian ice-breaker. We got two

or three brochures and my wife said that if I didn’t go now I’d never bloody go so I got on the phone and booked a passage,” he says. “It was better than I thought it would be, absolute magic.” The Perano family was synonymous with whaling between 1911 and 1964 when it was banned in New Zealand waters. Ron was often a whale spotter perched high on hills and lookouts. “I’ve only shot two or three whales in my time but I was a wireless operator and whale-spotter on the hills,” he says. When you know what to look for it’s easy to spot a whale. “You’re looking for a spout or for black in the water.” Ron wrote a book three years ago about his life and times called What an Adventure. “I can’t say it’s an accurate history book, the information just flowed out of me.” There will be a Perano Station reunion in April which is expected to see 800-1000 people attend. “There were more than 50 people employed in 1960 and that year we caught 226 whales, in 1961 we got 50 and 1962 we only got 20,” he says. Ron says he knew the writing was on the wall for commercial whaling with those numbers. “The Ross Sea, where our whales go to in the summer to feed, had been a closed area for hunting but the Russians and the Japanese went in there and took thousands and thousands of whales over a two year period and basically cleaned out the numbers.” While he is thrilled to be part of whaling conservation efforts today, he believes another issue has replaced whaling. “These days they’re cutting down millions of hectares in forestry in South America to get palm oil and the way things are its having the palm trees or the whales, you can’t have both because they’re exactly the same product.” If you would like to purchase Mr Perano’s book, you can contact him on 03 5784077.

Hundreds flock to Big Dig By Megan Connolly There were sandcastles of all sizes, shapes and builders of many skill levels covering the beach at Whites Bay for More FM’s Beach Day on Sunday. Around 700 people attended the event and around 120 sandcastles were created, More FM’s Tash Knox says. The Blenheim Lions Club organised the parking, managing to do an excellent job squeezing all the cars in the Whites Bay area. “The day ran very smoothly and the weather wasn’t too hot or too cold either,” Tash says. There were several prizes to be won for the sandcastle creations. Some of the categories included family effort, most creative and most technical.

Petra Prince was the overall winner and scored a weekend away to Hanmer Springs with her family. It was all heads down, bottoms up when it came to the Big Dig event, which had participants searching through the sand where every numbered tag won a prize. The big $500 cash prize that everyone was hoping for went to the lucky Steve Andrew. “It’s a summer staple event,” Tash says. This year there was a new game which proved to be very popular where contestants tried to throw or roll their ball as close to a flag as they could. “It was a really great free family day out,” Tash says.

Anderson Architectural As a qualified architectural designer, Jason Anderson has worked on hundreds of projects from standard suburban first homes to multimillion-dollar residences and geographically challenging builds in remote locations throughout Marlborough and Tasman. When it comes to designing your own home, Jason and the team at Anderson Architectural know it should be a fun process. Jason established the business over a year ago with his wife Paige. Initially, it began as a home business that grew and grew, including clients all over the country and across the Tasman. Jason sits down with clients and goes through an in-depth process where they work out everything from the budget and timeframes, through to which building company they want to build with. His experience and ongoing research into the building market mean that no matter what the design brief is, or how geographically challenging the location is, he can provide a number of options to the client.

Hospice shop continues to thrive By Megan Connolly Marlborough’s Hospice shop on Cleghorn Street is constantly buzzing as more donations are delivered every day. The treasure trove of second-hand goods is well stocked with hidden gems and staff are always welcoming new and wonderful items. “We welcome all goods that have got a second life,” store manager, Christine Law, says. For 13 years the store has been raising money for the Hospice by selling the items donated to the shop. “It’s like giving twice,” Christine says. There are more than 80 people who give their time to work in the store and behind the scenes, sorting and pricing everything. “It has always amazed me. You never quite know what is going to come in the door,” Christine says. The recent trend of tidying and downsizing promoted by Marie Kondo may have sparked a desire for people to get rid of more of their possessions. But Christine believes the donations they have been

experience every time. “The Marlborough economy is fairly positive and people are feeling good, which shows in our donations and in our customers,” Christine says. “The Hospice Shop is our lifeblood. Hospice Marlborough wouldn’t be here without it.”

Blenheim men do well at Wanaka swim and cycle A dip in the lake and a bike ride around the scenic central Otago town of Wanaka sounds like fun – except if it’s the testing National Aquabike Championships. The event involves a 3km swim in Lake Wanaka, followed by a two-lap 120km bike between Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea, and two local athletes have returned from the challenge at Wanaka at the weekend with podium finishes. Martin Fletcher won the M65-69 age group in a time of 4.48.48, and was placed 25th overall, and Paul Sell got 2nd place in the M4549 in 4.10.19 and was 3rd overall. Martin will now focus on preparing for the National

Road Cycling Championships in Timaru in April. Paul is looking forward to representing New Zealand at the World Aquabike Championships, which are being held in Pontevedra, Spain, at the beginning of May. The organisers say AquaBike is a new event at the Challenge Wanaka Festival of Triathlon. It is not only tailored to those triathletes that prefer to swim and bike rather than run, but is also a great introduction to athletes preparing to enter the triathlon scene. The swim and bike distance event is growing worldwide - the first world championships were held in 2017.

The heat’s on as Craig prepares for gruelling US challenge By Bill McElhinney Marlborough cyclist Craig Harper is counting down the weeks and training hard as the start of his biggest challenge yet draws nearer. In June Craig is competing in an endurance solo bike race that’s been billed as the toughest in the world. The Race Across America is a gruelling non-stop bike race that pits the world’s top endurance cyclists against each other, crossing 12 states along a non-stop 4828km route from America’s west to east coasts. The cyclists will face extreme weather conditions in desert sections, and climb a total height of 175,000 feet over the route – four times the cruising altitude of a long-haul commercial aircraft, or the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest six times. To add to the challenge, they have to complete the race in 12 days. Craig has just completed the first of three 24-hour sessions in

19

a 40-degree heat chamber at the University of Waikato to acclimatise for racing across the Sonoran Desert in Arizona (days 1-2 of the race). That came after Craig spent January riding his bike around the South Island while his family drove! ”I notched up more than 900km over a week on the roads,” Craig says. “I was even lucky enough to be able to ride on some roads I had never ridden, it was fantastic. My favourite spot to train though – the West Coast – is so beautiful. “The memory I will keep will be the morning I left Haast and headed north up the coast,” Craig says. “A 5am start saw me alone in the wilderness, just my bike and the road. I didn’t see another person or car for over three hours of riding. The sound of birdsong and cicadas in the bush was deafening. “The sunrise over the Southern Alps was breathtaking. It’ll be a

moment I’ll never forget.” The Race Across America is not just a race against the clock – this time Craig is up against the best endurance riders in the world. Unlike the Tour de France which races in daily sections, the Race Across America is one continual stage – it’s the world’s longest time trial. The race is about 30 per cent longer than the Tour de France, and

racers must complete the distance in roughly half the time… with no rest days. Craig will have a support crew of nine, including his wife, Kate, to ensure he stays safe on the road and in racing condition throughout the event. Craig will have to ride 550km a day to stay in the race, which means roughly 22 to 23 hours of cycling a day, depending on the terrain.

FAR RIGHT: These solar panels on the roof of Stuart Smith's house have made a noticeable difference to the power bill. RIGHT: Mark Unwin from iGenerate Solar is seeing more solar panels being installed on Marlborough homes.

Sun power helps youth foundation By Bill McElhinney Harnessing the power of Marlborough sunshine is saving money and helping a good cause. Last year Mark Unwin, from Blenheim firm iGenerate Solar, put a home solar power system up for auction to raise money for the Graeme Dingle Foundation. Mark, father of three, is on the board of the Foundation, and has helped raise funds to support the work the Foundation does with young people throughout the country. The Foundation is a child and

youth charity that believes the way to create positive social impact is to start early. The Foundation runs school-based programmes teaching children across the country confidence, resilience, self-belief and life skills. It is the second time Mark has auctioned a solar system for the Foundation, and the auction was won by Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith. “It’s been great,” Stuart says. “The system was installed in a day, and in fact after talking to Mark we put in extra panels to make even greater savings in the home.

“I’ve got an app on my phone which shows how much the system generates, how much we use and what we can sell back to the power retailer. “We’ve already seen we’re getting about an eight per cent return on our solar investment, which is pretty good. And of course Marlborough has the perfect climate for solar power!” The auction raised over $4000 for the Dingle Foundation, and Mark plans to hold another fundraising auction later this year. “The Foundation does great

work with young people in schools around the country, and it relies on fundraising to keep the programmes going,” Mark says. In the meantime, he is seeing a growing interest in solar power installations in Marlborough. “There are over 500 household with solar generation now,” Mark says, “and that figure is going up by 10-20 households a month. “Installation costs between $7000 to $11,000 and you will see savings of between $50 to $100 a month on your power bill. “And any excess power you gen-

erate can be sold back to your electricity company.” Mark says Trustpower is trialling a scheme at the moment where homes that generate excess electricity can sell it back to other Trustpower customers in their neighbourhood. The Marlborough District Council has got behind the solar scheme and is offering to pay the cost of installing solar panels, with the home owner paying the council back over a period of nine years through a targeted addition to their rates.
