Amazing! By Bill McElhinney Classic Fighters Omaka 2019 was “the best show yet,” one of the event organisers, Graham Orphan, says. The rain on Sunday forced an early shut down of the show, but the crowds on both Friday and Saturday were the biggest they’ve ever had, Graham says. “There have been so many positive aspects, we always try to raise the bar and that’s not just bigger planes or a bigger variety, it’s in the theatrical performance as well.
In 2001, Classic Fighters was the first event in the Southern Hemisphere to host a dedicated WWI battle sequence involving multiple aeroplanes, military vehicles and sets. Continued on page 2. ABOVE: Andrew Love pilots a Bleriot 1X at Yealands Classic Airshow. The Bleriot was the first plane to cross the English channel in 1909 with French aviator Louis Bleriot. Best crowds yet for Classic Fighters Continued from page 1. In 2001, Classic Fighters was the first event in the Southern Hemisphere to host a dedicated WWI battle sequence involving multiple aeroplanes, military vehicles and sets. Classic Fighters has gone on to stage outstanding air and ground mock battle sequences that get better every year. “It’s something we do that’s different from other airshows, and we’ve already had people coming to us with ideas for the next show!”
Les Whiteside
Graham says. “We get such great community support, which is what we need to keep going.” People came to Omaka from far and wide. Sonia from the Sunshine Coast in Australia said her husband dragged her along, but she was pleased she made the effort because everyone was so friendly and the sight of all the different aircraft had been fantastic. The Royal Australian Air Force F18 Hornets blew the crowds away with their display. “They were just so fast and loud,
it was quite incredible to watch,” Graham says. The squadron leader for the Hornets, Jason “Eastie” Easthope, was actually a Rotorua man himself, before joining the Australian air force, Graham says. “He wants to come back, he had such a great time meeting so many friendly people. He wants to come back and do it again.” Another pilot with local connections was Dave Brown, brother of Blenheim man Phil Brown. Dave, known to most as “Brownie,”
is a former RNZAF A4 Skyhawk pilot and RNZAF Strikemaster instructor who left the Air Force to become a senior Airbus A340 captain. Dave is now a chief pilot with the New Zealand Warbirds Association and flies with the ‘Roaring Forties’ display team. The Classic Fighters team are taking a breather now after spending the last 12 months organising the show, but “We’ll be back with bells on for 2021, with even bigger and better theatrics,” Graham says.

Liz and Val’s ‘Expressive’ exhibition By Aimee O’Hagan Well-known Picton artists, Liz Kempthorne and Val Griffith Jones, have excitingly come together for a joint exhibition named, ‘Liz and Val Do Colour’. The artists’ beautifully evocative and boldly colourful landscapes are currently being displayed at Marlborough Art Society on High Street. Their work will be exhibited until Sunday 28th April, from 10:30am to 4:30pm each day. To Liz and Val, their individual paintings represent very different ideas and “deeper purposes”. Liz says her paintings are all about “colour” and her emotional connection to the environment around her.
“Everything changes everytime I change my environment,” she says. “That all affects what I am going to paint. “It’s an emotional thing – it’s not about getting a clear picture.” Val says that she too likes “being outdoors and responding to the environment”. “For a long time I couldn’t see the point of landscapes,” she mentions. “I’ve found that going back to the same place over and over is a really good thing... You start seeing the colour and the shapes. “The more I go back – particularly in the forestry areas – I start seeing devastation, and it becomes more political.” She has found herself
getting more “angry and gutsy” as the series has gone on, which is reflected through the vigour and strength of her acrylic work. “The best ones were done pretty fast,” she laughs. The artists’ shared love of landscapes caused them to think it would be a “good idea” to do the exhibition together. Although the two have only worked on this exhibition for the last two years, Liz and Val say they have been painting for a “very long time”. Neither have always painted landscapes. In the past, Val has done sculpture work, using “different fabrics and fibres”. Liz adores music, literaPicton artists, Val Griffith Jones (left) and Liz Kempthorne. ture, and poetry.

Crash on Whangamoas The man in his 30s crashed his car on the Serpentine Straight in the Whangamoa area about 8.30am on Monday. The car had struck a bank and rolled onto its roof, blocking the Nelson-bound lane on a blind corner, between Kokorua Rd and Opouri Rd. The man has crawled from the wreck of his car and was treated by St John ambulance staff at the scene for moderate injuries.

Muslim Association of Marlborough chairman Zayd Ian Blissett, centre, with Muslim men, some of them RSE workers, who want to thank the Marlborough community.
Muslims thank Marlborough By Bill McElhinney There were flowers, cards, phone calls, cash donations and a huge out pouring of love and sympathy from people in Marlborough for members of the Blenheim Muslim community following the terror attack at the Masjid Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch. “The Muslim Association of Marlborough wants to express our heartfelt gratitude for the love and support we have received since the tragic event in Christchurch,” Muslim community chairman, Zayd Ian Blissett, says. Ian and his wife, Nisha, had travelled to the mosque where one of the two shootings took place twice a year. “I personally knew eleven of the people who were killed,” Ian says.
“That really hurts, as these people were my brothers.” But in the wake of the tragedy, Ian and others on the local Muslim community had seen an “outpouring of support, love and respect” from the Blenheim community, with a stream of people from “all religions and no religions” calling to express support, he said. “Some of the cards that we received from youngsters were obviously written from the heart, and brought tears to our eyes,” Ian says. “I’ve been stopped in the street so many times by people wanting to express their sympathy and concern. It has been really moving, and we want the Marlborough community to know how grateful we are.”
Ian and Nisha had planned to travel down to Christchurch recently to visit the mosque, but Nisha wasn’t well enough, so they have postponed their trip and will make a visit before the end of the month. “This act of horror does not represent the New Zealand I know and love,” Ian says. “But out of this darkness has come great good, something which has brought people together.” Ian had lived in the United States before coming to New Zealand in 1972, and was “totally, totally shocked” by the attack. “Coming here was paradise, because I thought this place is a beautiful, non-violent nation. I had no idea the gun laws here were quite so lax,” he says.
Meanwhile, a Marlborough Muslim community centre that has been planned for years has received a wave of support following the Christchurch shootings. A site on Budge Street has remained empty since the dairy on it was demolished in 2016 after being gutted by a fire. Ian says they are unsure about what is planned for the site, which is owned by the New Zealand Islamic Development Trust. The Muslims currently meet at a shared community centre in Blenheim. Ian says they eventually hope to build a community centre, not a mosque. “A community centre is a place where we can go for prayer, have meetings, celebrate, have the festivals.”
Plans are being made to build mobility scooter storage sheds at all four of Blenheim’s Senior Housing complexes over the next few months. The sheds will keep mobility scooters charged, safe and out of the elements. There are an estimated 500 mobility scooters in Marlborough, with the number of people using them expected to increase as the population ages.
Tourist spending up Tourism spending in Marlborough is up, with $387 million spent by visitors in Marlborough to the year end March 2018, up 7.5 per cent on the previous year. Visitors to Marlborough spent: $126 million on transport, tours and experiences; $63 million at restaurants, cafes and bars; $57 million in retail stores; $46 million on alcohol, food and beverages; $46 million on fuel and automotive services; $50 million on accommodation. Seven new conferences have also been confirmed over the past 12 months, which is expected to inject an estimated $2.1 million into the region.

Q: What does Anzac mean to you as a young person in 2019?
Rosie McAllister Blenheim Anzac Day is a time to remember those who fought for our country, but also a day to continue to strive for peace in our world and hope that ongoing conflicts cease. We must respect those from other nations who fought and are still fighting today as well.
Max Cavill-Sheriff Blenheim Anzac Day has always been important to me since I was a kid. I believed it was our duty as New Zealanders to show our appreciation and respect for those that loved their families and country enough to fight for the freedom we have today.
Abbie Summerscales Blenheim As a teenager, I think Anzac Day is a day that we honour all the people that lost their lives for our country in the wars.
Niels van Antwerpen Blenheim It’s a day for us to remember the people that risked their lives to protect our values so that we could continue living with those values.
Sam Lewis Blenheim Anzac for me is a way to commemorate the fallen soldiers and family who died, and as a young person it’s good to continue the tradition.
Niamh Attridge Blenheim Taking the time to remember and be grateful for those who gave their lives for us to have ours.

Dear Ed, I’ve made a pleasant discovery. That is, how much nicer New Zealand grown oranges are than those brought in from half a world away. Ours are not quite so “orange,” a little lemon coloured in fact, but beautifully sweet and with a lot thinner peel, so you get more eating for your dollar.

Power Trust did well Dear Ed, As a customer of Marlborough Lines, I am more than happy that the Marlborough Electric Power Trust chose to invest in Yealands Wines. As the result of some smart commercial decisions, Marlborough Lines had a wad of cash to invest. They chose to invest it in a local company, which employs local people (and looks after them well) and pumps millions into the local economy. They could have sunk the cash into another lines company in another part of the country, but they
chose to invest in Marlborough. I’m also pleased to be a recipient of the dividends that are returned to us power consumers as a result of this investment. I sincerely hope that Wellington lawyer Michael Wigley and the few malcontents he represents get their comeuppance in court. In the meantime I’ll turn the lights on and raise a glass of fine Yealands wine in a toast to the lines company and winery that are putting Marlborough first! Happy Customer Blenheim
Wanting to thank Doctor Rory Dear Ed, Early in March I was travelling on an Air New Zealand flight to Singapore and became quite unwell. They called for a medical Dr on board and a young man named Rory cared for me for the rest of the flight to Singapore.
I only know his first name, he did tell me he was living in Blenheim, but was on an overseas trip. I did not thank him properly and wondered if you could put something in The Sun paper that he may read. A big thank you to Doctor Rory. Janice Craig

Lions coming to town for national convention By Bill McElhinney Blenheim’s excellent convention facilities have once again attracted a national gathering. This weekend hundreds of Lions Club members with wives and partners will gather in Blenheim for their annual national convention. The convention, which is being jointly hosted by the Blenheim and Beavertown lions, will bring Lions Club members from all around New Zealand as well as Australia, Indonesia and Fiji. “We started work on this over a year ago,” convention chairman Jim Thomas says. “We put forward Blenheim as a convention venue and the quality and location of our facilities won the day. “This is the first time we’ve
hosted a national convention and I’m sure our visitors will enjoy it, especially as most of them will be able to stroll from their central accommodation to the Marlborough Convention Centre.” Marlborough farmer Doug Avery will be guest speaker on Friday evening. Doug will share his about his life on the land, his struggles with drought, earthquakes and depression and the recovery that has made him the epitome of the resilient farmer. Saturday will be a business session, followed by a social evening. Those not attending the business sessions will have the opportunity for a wine tasting at the Wither Hills Winery barrel room, a visit to a boutique shopping,
café and craft centre at the Vines Village and a visit to the Makana Chocolate Factory, or a visit to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. “We’ve called it the Grape Escape Convention,” Jim says, “and we’re sure the visitors will have a barrel of fun!” RIGHT: Lions Club members Jim Thomas and Malcolm Williams are looking forward to hosting visitors to the Lions national convention, to be held in the Marlborough Convention Centre this weekend.

Students speak up for racial harmony Samantha Mayne’s views on race relations in Aotearoa New Zealand have won her first place in the 2019 Race Unity Speech Awards in Marlborough and a place in the national semi-finals of the competition. The year 12 student of Marlborough Girls’ College addressed the topic, ‘Speaking for Justice, Working for Unity’. Samantha will now travel to Auckland to participate in the national semi-finals on 10 May, with more than twenty other students from around the country. If successful at that level she will also participate in the national final the following day. Regional coordinator, Shalom Del’Monte-Aberhart, says, “more and more New Zealanders are recognising that we must address racial prejudice and injustice if we want a harmonious and unified country - but it’s a big challenge to make sure our efforts create real unity in a world that is becoming increasingly polarised. “Recent events in Christchurch have made this discussion even
more urgent in our country – it must be carefully and thoughtfully addressed.” While in Auckland, Samantha will also participate in the annual Race Unity Hui, which provides a space where youth and young adults aged 15-30 can deepen their understanding of race relations issues and share their views on how progress can be achieved. Initiated by the NZ Baha’i Community in 2001, the Race Unity Speech Awards now run in fourteen regions from Northland to Dunedin. The NZ Police have been the principal sponsors since 2008, with further sponsorship coming from the Human Rights Commission and the Office of Ethnic Communities. It is also supported by the NZ Federation of Multicultural Councils and Speech NZ. At the National Final of the Speech Awards last year, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Tusha Penny, said “We always speak of (young) people being tomorrow’s leaders, but they’re leading today.”

A young seamans life during WW2 Alister McKay lost a brother in the Second World War, but that didn’t deter him from volunteering to join the war effort. Bill McElhinney talks to Alister about his Navy days. Alister McKay’s parents didn’t want him to join the armed forces for the Second World War. They had already lost their eldest son, Ian, who was aged 22 when the Fleet Air Arm Fairey Barracuda carrier-borne torpedo and dive bomber he was in exploded over the Irish Sea. “Worst aircraft they ever made,” Alister says as he reflects on his brother’s death. A problem was later discovered with the Barracuda where leaking hydraulic fluid was producing ether fumes into the cockpits and disabling the pilots. After some fatal crashes, the decision was made to equip Barracuda aircraft with oxygen masks and require their use, but it was too late to save Ian. “There is no grave for Ian,” Alister says, “and my parents knew very little about what happened to him. There was poor communication at the time. It was very upsetting for them.” Undeterred, Alister brushed aside the concerns of parents Alec and Minnie and signed up for the Royal New Zealand Navy. “The Navy recruits were all volunteers,” he says. “I wanted to go so I volunteered.” He was sent to Devenport Naval Base in Auckland where he was posted to the Leander-class light cruiser Achilles as a boy seaman, second class. Earlier in the War the Achilles achieved fame when its crew opened fire on the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee in the South Atlantic, becoming the first New Zealand unit to strike a blow at the enemy in the Second World War. After 30 weeks of training, Alister became a second class seaman and went with the Achilles to Japan and the United Kingdom as the War was ending. He also went with the Navy to the Korean War, and in the process got to see much of the world. “Life as a seaman was a lot of dirty work, washing, cleaning and painting,”
Young Navy seaman Alister McKay, aged 18, photographed in the UK after delivering the cruiser Achilles back to England. The Achilles was replaced by the modified Dido-class cruiser Bellona, which Alister and the crew sailed back to New Zealand. RIGHT: Alister and Patricia McKay were married in 1951 after Alister came back from serving in the Royal New Zealand Navy.
Alister says. Sometimes he was away at sea for up to seven weeks at a time. But he stayed with the Navy for nearly nine years, achieving the rank of Petty Officer. “It was a much better life as a Petty Officer,” Alister says. “Better accommodation – you even got served your meals in the Mess!” He also made a lot of good friends, although only a handful are still alive now. When he finished his Navy

Comedians stand up for peace By Aimee O’Hagan Marlborough residents gathered at Blenheim bar, 5 Tapped, recently for a night of fun and laughter. They were there for ‘Stand Up For Peace’: an event organized by local comedians and national comedians alike, with the aim of raising money for victims of the Christchurch mosque terrorist attacks that happened last month. Similar events with an identical cause were run in multiple destinations across New Zealand – such as Palmerston North, Auckland, Wellington, and more – at exactly the same time. All were live-streamed. Local comedian, Chris Lippiatt,
says acts at the Blenheim-based event included Fergus Aitken, Jono Entwistle, Maurice Davies, Nigel Corbett, Natalia Lippiatt, and himself. “All in all, I thought the night went well,” he says. “5 Tapped were very accomodating, and the Karaka food tasted awesome.” According to Chris, Marlborough’s Stand Up For Peace event raised $735. Excitingly, a collective amount of over $20,000 was made by regions that took part. “It was an honour to have Brother Zayd and Brother Jazz from the Islamic community come and speak and stay for the event,” Chris says.
“Our comedians all did very well from the feedback we have received from audience members. “I would like to thank the audience for their support, without them we would have nothing to donate and the comedians would feel silly talking to nobody.” The only improvement he can think of is that he would have “liked to have seen a bigger audience”. There were approximately fifty people in the crowd. “But for an event that was cobbled together on a wing and a prayer in under three weeks, with a budget of $0, I think we did alright,” Chris says. Twelve year-old, Natalia Lippiatt, makes a "comedic debut".
Motorists take another look
DRIVE TO SURVIVE
Motorists should “take another look” at intersections and eliminate distractions while driving to avoid crashes, says Marlborough road police sergeant Barrie Greenhall. Modern car design may have made our vehicles safer, but an unfortunate side effect of having more air bags is larger window frames which can create blind spots if drivers don’t have a proper look, Barrie says. “Modern vehicles have got much thicker A-frames and larger wing mirrors which are causing a huge gap in our vision. “Historically, a quick look may have sufficed, but these
days, drivers need to be conscious of modern car design and slow down at intersections, move their heads around and take several looks to make sure there are no oncoming vehicles before pulling out.” Barrie suggested drivers read about the Safe System Approach for a different view on their driving behaviour. “The Safe System Approach is where road designers and road users accept that people will make mistakes,” Barrie says. “Consequently, our road design and the way we drive should take our human fallibility and vulnerability into
account with the aim being to protect people from death and serious injury.” Road users could protect themselves by purchasing vehicles with driver assist features such as traction control and a lane departure warning system. Drivers should slow down and “drive socially” rather than being confrontational, he says. “Sure, it may not be your fault, it can be inconvenient and annoying, but it’s far better to slow down than wreck a life. “We’re all human, we all make mistakes, it pays to keep that in mind when driving.”

Earth Day family fun

EARTH DAY 2019
April 28
‘We Only Have One – CO2’s side of the story’ a poem by Grace Straker, Bohally Intermediate School Crowded. The air pushed and tumbled us, We only had one choice, Me and my friends assembled together, Underneath the weather’s outrageous clamour, And decided that it was time. Silently we slid beneath the waves, Lapping like a dog against the unexplored caves, And made our home there in the salty sea, Living the dream of millions with glee, And killed off every living thing in sight. We drained the life out of the coral’s souls, And watched all of our dead fish get covered in mould, As we relaxed in our heating up spa, Ignoring the human cries heard from afar, And I thought about their choices. My friends and I will rebel against you, I told them, Soon we will conquer you and your land, As we are a bit further up the stem, So you should perhaps think about what you have done, And maybe, just maybe, you could save our ocean, We only have one.
In celebration of Earth Day 2019, Climate Karanga Marlborough has selected pieces of art work and creative writing from schools around Marlborough to feature on 60 screen printed banners. The banners will be on display at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim, Picton Library in Picton, and the Havelock Town Hall, between April 25th and May 3rd. Earth Day 2019 is centred around the theme, “Protect Our Species”. Each of the selected art work and creative writing pieces embody this message in their own individual, creative, and stylistic ways. All pieces of art work and creative writing submitted including those that were not selected for the banner project - will be on display at Marlborough District Library between April 17th and May 3rd. By Aimee O’Hagan In celebration of Marlborough Earth Day 2019, Climate Karanga Marlborough are set to hold an ‘Earth Day Family Picnic’ at Baden Powell Reserve, Pollard Park. The event will be held this Sunday, April 28th, from 10:00am until 3:00pm, and has no entry fee. Climate Karanga Marlborough member, Budyong Hill, says that there will be a “range of participatory activities happening throughout the day”, including “games for kids, a scavenger hunt, and an adventure quiz with prizes”. As the theme for International Earth Day 2019 is ‘Protect Our Species’, there will be various other educational activities and
information displays available. “This will be an opportunity for children and their families to learn about New Zealand’s threatened species and the reasons why many species around the world are facing extinction,” Budyong says. Excitingly, Diane Dobson from the Marlborough Falcon Trust will be talking and showing a native NZ falcon. According to Budyong, displays will provide information about the Pelorus Bat Project – which aims to protect the population of NZ’s native long tailed bat – and the Predator Free NZ programme. Climate Karanga Marlborough advises families to bring picnic baskets, reusable coffee cups, and water bottles: the picnic will be a “zero-waste event”.
Print making “magic” opportunity for community The Marlborough Art Society is offering people the chance to grasp the basics of using a printing press with an introductory course on June 8. The one day workshop will be run by Sudhir Duppati and he hoped it would allow the people of Marlborough an opportunity to use the new printing machine. ”I wanted to set up this workshop for people who had an interest in printing
but no prior experience in using one,” he said. ”Everything from how to use the machine to what prints can be created and what materials can be used.” Sudhir said he had always been amazed at what art could be produced by the machine. ”I’ve often considered the machine to be like magic,” he says. ”Some of the prints which
come out look so beautiful, it can be hard to imagine what it will look like. ”The machine gives us a very good opportunity to experiment and explore and it gives us good results.” He said it was important that people in Marlborough knew there was a printing machine for the community to use. ”This workshop could be the start to even more fun with print making,” he said.

Barney joins the Food Bank team Marlborough Community Food Bank volunteer Chris Knowles picks up all sorts of things as he drives around collecting items for the Food Bank. “The supermarkets give us lots of items,” Chris says, “and the latest was this big bear. He’s not in the best condition to give away, so I’ve made him my co-driver. “He’ll go with me on my rounds, and probably attract a bit of attention along the way.” When the Marlborough community Food Bank was set up more than 25 years ago, the organizers thought it would be only a temporary thing. “They hoped the demand for food parcels would eventually fade away,” Food Bank manager Winnie Cosgrove says. But today, the needs are greater than ever. “We have more and more families here in emergency accommodation, struggling to make ends meet,” Winnie says.
Marlborough Community Food Bank volunteer Chris Knowles with his new co-driver, Barney Bear.
“The cost of living keeps going up, things like rent and petrol, and families find they
just can’t manage. The food bank works with different social welfare organ-
isations across Marlborough to determine who needs assistance.

How to keep your home dry A dehumidifier costs around $156 a year to run - these tips are cheaper and can be just as effective. If you use an unflued gas heater (that is, one without a chimney), make sure that you use it safely. Research has shown that they can release gases which can be particularly dangerous for anyone with heart disease or asthma, pregnant women, young children and older people. If you have to use one, open a window and keep all internal doors open too. Use it only for short periods and never in bedrooms. Try not to dry clothes indoors as this creates moisture in the air. Drying on the outside is free and the sunlight kills bacteria, making your clothes healthier

for you and your family. Use a shed or garage if it is raining. To reduce moisture caused by steam, always open a window when you are showering and when you are cooking on the stove top. Use pot lids to reduce the amount of steam escaping.
Keep doors to bedrooms closed at these times as steam can make beds damp. If you must use a clothes dryer, make sure your clothes are properly spun first and leave windows open while you are using it - or even better, vent it outside.
We’re off to Guthrie Bowron to look at new carpet and curtains. Mum says it’s important to get in early and beat the rush. We’ll be toasty warm this winter. Talk to the experts

Winter is coming. Talk to us about retro-fit or new double or triple glazing NOW before it gets cold.
Important to keep warm and dry Why is it important to keep my home warm and dry? It’s important for your family’s health that your house is warm and dry. Cold and damp homes are linked to poor health, especially for babies and small children, people who are ill, and older people. Here are some ways to keep your home healthy that won’t break the bank: How to heat your house Only heat the room that you are in. Try and keep the temperature between 18 and 21 degrees especially if you have babies, people with illnesses, or older people living in your home. Dress warmly for bed and make sure your bedroom is warm enough - it is very important to stay warm during the night.
Block up unused chimneys and stop draughts around doors and windows. You can make your own draught ‘snakes’ by stuffing rugby socks or pantyhose with newspaper or cushion filling. Up to 20% of heating can be lost through draughts.
Open windows and curtains on sunny days, and close them when the sun goes down to trap heat in your home. Trim any trees that prevent sun entering your house (but if you are renting, remember to ask your landlord first!).
Efficient ways to be green and save money Install eco-friendly bulbs. These bulbs can last for many years and they use 80 per cent less power than standard light bulbs. An energy efficient showerhead can use up to 50 per cent less hot water than a standard one. Consider installing one yourself, or ask your landlord if one can be fitted. Check the seals on your fridge to make sure they are still working. If they stop working or become less effective, warm air
will enter your fridge, making it work harder and use more power. To test your seals, put a piece of paper in the door and close it. If the paper can be easily pulled out, you may need to have the seals replaced. Do the same with your oven, as it could be losing precious heat energy whenever you cook. Companies that will replace the seals are listed in the yellow Pages under fridges and freezers - Servicing, or Ovens and stoves.
Double glazing on windows is an effective way of controlling heat loss and condensation, but can be very costly. A cheaper alternative is to buy a window insulator kit, which involves fitting plastic film to the inside of wooden windows. If you are replacing an appliance, try to ensure the replacement appliance is as energy efficient as possible. The higher initial cost will benefit you in the long run through savings made to your power bills.

heating Once a year, it's a sensible idea to have your home’s heating system inspected by a professional. To avoid the last-minute rush, consider scheduling this task in early autumn, before the heating season cranks up! Unusual noises, hums or groans, poor performance and erratic behaviour are all signs that your heating system may need professional attention.
Check your gas If you use an unflued gas heater (that is, one without a chimney), make sure that you use it safely. Research has shown that they can release gases which can be particularly dangerous for anyone with heart disease or asthma, pregnant women, young children and older people. If you have to use one, open a window and keep all internal doors open too. Use it only for short periods and never in bedrooms.

Seal those drafty areas A home with air leaks around windows and doors is an unpleasant place to be. Gaps also make your home’s heating system work extra hard – costing you more money on your electricity bill. Weather strip is one of the most cost-effective ways to manage your heating costs. This off-the-shelf material also minimises unpleasant drafts and keeps your whole home more comfy at any time of the year. Because weather strip can deteriorate over time, it is important to inspect it periodically, and replace if necessary. While you're at it, also check for missing or damaged sealant around windows, doors, and entry points for electrical points etc. If needed, seal any gaps with a suitable gap-filler. Draft-stoppers for the bottom of doors are also a fabulously useful invention. Check out the range at your local hardware store.

Harrier Club events
Emma trains hard for Hawaii challenge By Bill McElhinney Emma Chibnall doesn’t have any trouble filling in her spare time. The 29-year-old data analyst at the Marlborough District Council runs for between 30 minutes to 1.5 hours three times a week, swims two kilometres three days a week and rides her mountain bike for up to three hours three or four times a week. Emma began her training regime in October last year, and on April 6 she competed in the Radix Xterra Rotorua festival in their signature event, the long course triathlon. The race consisted of a 1 km swim, 28 km mountain bike on the Whakarewarewa forest trails,
followed by an 11 km run around lake Tikitapu. “It was my first triathlon, and I completed the race in just over three hours (3.07) and came second in my age group,” Emma says. That placing has earned Emma a qualifying spot for the Xterra World championships 2019 in Maui, Hawaii, in October this year. A premier off-road triathlon, the race combines a 1.5km swim, a 32km mountain bike ride that climbs 1097 metres up and down the lower slopes of the West Maui Mountains, and a 10.5km trail run that traverses forest trails and beach sand. Emma has moved to Marlbor-
ough from Auckland, where she worked as a data analyst with the Auckland Council. She was attracted to coming to Marlborough after taking part in an Outward Bound course at Anakiwa five years ago, so when the job came up here she jumped at it. “I was a competitive swimmer in high school,” Emma says, “and I’ve always loved mountain biking. “So I thought, why not start doing some running, combine the three, and do a triathlon.” She was encouraged by her partner, Martin, a sports massage therapist who is still in Auckland. “I really wish he was here now,” Emma says. “I could do with his
23
skills!” But in the meantime Emma is sticking to her training regime. “It takes six months to train for something like the Hawaii event,” Emma says, “but I don’t have any regrets about putting the effort in. “Swimming and biking are fine; I just need to work on the running, which is not my best discipline.” Emma doesn’t follow any particular dietary regime as she trains. “Just whole foods, nothing processed,” she says. In the meantime she’s putting in the hard yards to make sure she’s in good form for the Hawaii challenge.
The Marlborough Harrier Club meets at 6pm on Thursday at the Oliver Park clubrooms for a pack/training run or walk. Reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers regardless of ability are welcome. Everyone is welcome to participate. On Saturday meet at the Taylor Dam cross-country course for the Burton Cup handicap race, the club’s oldest trophy. Meet at 1.45pm ready for 2pm start. Course in reverse. Volunteers needed for set up. Contact Allister on 577 8870 or Bill on 572 9792 for more information. Bring a plate to share with others at afternoon tea/coffee at the conclusion of the run/walk. Non-members welcome. Children’s event catered for.
