By Bill McElhinney Pay by plate parking is coming to central Blenheim, replacing the old coin operated lollipop meters. The 170 Duncan parking meters around town will be replaced by 24 pay-by-plate terminals, or one terminal per seven parks. Pay by plate is a paperless system that works by using a vehicle licence plate number rather than a paper ticket. You enter your vehicle plate number

and the time you want to park at the terminal. You then have the option of using coins or credit/debit cards to pay for the parking. There is no ticket issued, so a ticket does not need to be displayed in your vehicle. If you want to extend your parking time, you can do that remotely. A new ‘Pay my Park’ mobile phone app will allow drivers to top up or pay for their parking remotely. Continued on page 2.

Marlborough District Council customer services officer, Marianne Vertelman, will be able to show people how the new pay by plate parking machines work.

New terminals to replace old parking meters Continued from page 1. Parking time limits and charges will remain the same, but the new system will allow people to move between kerbside parking spaces in the pay by plate areas and use any unspent parking credit for that day. A receipt can be emailed to any user who requires one for business or GST purposes. “It’s a really easy system to use. You just enter your plate number and time, press ok, pay, then walk away,” says Marlborough District Council project and contract manager, Robyn Searle. Parking officers will use their hand held devices to confirm that your vehicle has a valid parking session. Some work will begin next week and will continue over the next six weeks. The aim is to have the new meters installed and operating by mid-June. Findlater Construction will carry out the ground work in stages. The first conversions will be in Queen, Market,

Scott, Maxwell and High Streets. Disruption to pedestrians on footpaths will be minimal and some work will be carried out after business hours. The old coin operated meters, which have been around since the 1980s, are often vandalised and are no longer being made, so the changeover is a priority, Robyn says. You can also pay at any terminal in the area; it doesn’t have to be the one closest to your car. “You walk in the direction of where you’re going to do your shopping, and you pay at the first terminal,” Robyn says. A pay by plate meter has been installed in the foyer of the council offices, and customer services staff are on hand to show people how to use it. When the new meters are installed, extra staff will be on hand in town to answer questions and help people to

be converted into two 120-minute parking spaces, two 10-minute parks outside First National will become two 120-minute parks, and several parking spaces on High St and Charles St will be converted to loading zones.

A sound that makes you smile!

By Bill McElhinney It’s a distinctive and cheerful sight and sound – a small fairground organ making music while the carved figurines on the front move in time. The organ belongs to retired Blenheim engineer Geoff Taylor, and appears at the annual Brayshaw Park Heritage Day, much to the delight of the crowd. “But this year I had to shut it down early,” Geoff Says. “It was too hot and dry, and that affects the organ’s reeds. I could tell it was going out of tune.” Geoff has long had an interest in mechanical music, although he claims to have no musical ability himself. “My musical ability consists of flicking switches on and off,” he says with a grin. Geoff saw the fairground organs when he and his wife were on a trip in Europe, and he decided he wanted one. “I tracked down two people overseas who did organ restorations, and finally found this one in Wakefield, Yorkshire,” Geoff says. He had it shipped back to New Zealand, but it didn’t have the figurines that adorn the front. “I had to get those made separately,” Geoff says. “They’re hand carved from wood and hand painted. It took about a year to get them.” Geoff’s smaller organ has 52 keys, but the bigger ones have up to 112 keys, he says. “They’re a proper organ – a blower pushes air over the valves to make the notes as the keys are struck.” The tunes come in books, which

Last call for plan submissions There is less than a week until submissions close on the Council’s 2019-20 Annual Plan. “I encourage people to have their say - now is your chance to tell councillors and myself if you think we’ve got our plans about right,” Marlborough Mayor John Leggett says. The deadline for submissions is 5.00 pm next Monday, May 6. To read the Annual Plan 2019-20 Update, go to www.marlborough. govt.nz or pick up a copy at Council’s Blenheim office, Picton Library and Service Centre, Marlborough District Library, Blenheim, or your local community library. If you’d like to make a submission you can do so online at www. marlborough.govt.nz/ under ‘Have your Say’, Or write to: Annual Plan Feedback Marlborough District Council, 15 Seymour St, PO Box 443 Blenheim or email: annualplan@marlborough. govt.nz If you would also like to speak to councillors at a hearing, from 4 to 6 June, please let council know, along with your submission.

are slots punched in special cardboard, each book featuring a different tune, similar to a roll the powers a player piano, Geoff says. Geoff has about 85 tunes for his organ, but says there are up to 2000 available. His interest in mechanical music follows a lifetime interest in engineering. “I was a dairy farmer in Koromiko,” Geoff says, “but I decided to pursue something I was more interested in.

He switched to engineering work from a small shed at the back of his Koromiko property, which eventually grew to become Taylors Engineering, a company that pioneered new ideas for several Marlborough industries. Early projects included stainless steel vats for the cheese factories in Tuamarina and Koromiko and then other projects for the salt works at Grassmere, near Seddon. In the 1980s, Taylors Engineering became involved in Marlborough’s

burgeoning wine industry and Geoff designed and manufactured some of the region’s earliest wine tanks for Montana and many of the pioneering wine companies. Now Geoff plays his fairground organ once a week and keeps an eye on it to make sure the valves don’t dry out. “The experts say that when the blower is started up, it ‘makes the pipes speak,’” Geoff says. “And the music makes people happy!”

Pernod Ricard Winemakers, whose labels include Brancott Estate, Stoneleigh and Deutz, are holding a public field day on Friday, May 3, as part of the 2019 Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards. The company won the Wine Industry Award for initiatives to minimise vineyard and winery waste, reduce carbon emissions, and bring native biodiversity into the vineyards. The field day is a chance to see what impressed the judges. It starts at 12.45pm at 180 Brancott Road and ends with a walk around the Kaituna wetland restoration project in Renwick. Council will help with solar power switch Marlborough ratepayers wanting to switch to solar power can now call on the Marlborough District Council for assistance. As part of a new initiative launched today, ratepayers now have the option of adding the installation costs of solar panels, by an approved provider, to their rates bill. Ratepayers would then pay back the Council for the cost of the installation through a targeted rate over nine years, alongside an administration fee and a 5.5 per cent stand-

ard interest rate, which will be reviewed annually. Council’s Chief Financial Officer Martin Fletcher says Council has identified, through an Expression of Interest process, eight solar panel providers who will work with ratepayers and Council to deliver the scheme. All of the approved providers are members of the Sustainable Energy Association New Zealand, which brings a high level of quality and assurance to their

work,” Martin says. Once the ratepayer has obtained a satisfactory quote from one of the providers, they then apply to Council for assistance. Installation costs will depend on the type, amount and size of the panels selected. Martin says the solar panel scheme is a natural extension to Councils suite of energy efficiency initiatives, especially with Marlborough’s high number of sunshine hours.

“The scheme also encourages the switch to solar power in an effort to improve affordability of clean, home heating and energy supply. Once the solar panels are installed, ratepayers can opt to use the clean energy they provide, store it in batteries or supply it to the grid,” he says. Eligibility for the scheme is not limited by income or assets and is open to Marlborough ratepayers. For further information on

Council’s energy efficiency funding services including the solar power scheme, visit: www. marlborough.govt.nz/services/ rates/energy-efficiency Below is a list of Council’s approved solar power service providers: A&B Electrical Solutions Ltd; Callahan & Martella Ltd; Harrisons Energy Solutions; iGenerate Ltd; MPower Pacific Ltd; Solar Electric Technology Ltd; Solar Sure Ltd; Sunshine Solar.

The Richmond Handbell Ringers Eighteen years ago in June 2000, a Japanese woman Kiyoko Toya, arrived at the Richmond Methodist Church for morning worship. In her Christchurch flat, she had three octaves of handbells which she had brought from Japan. Kiyoko offered to teach the church folk the intricacies and finer points of this wonderful form of music. She stayed for a few years, and the group soon

became very competent at handbell ringing. In 2003, the ringers attended their first Australasian Handbell Festival, which was in Wellington. A year later, the group ventured to Adelaide for a similar festival. It was in 2007 that Kiyoko decided to retire, and she returned home to Japan with her bells. The church then purchased a new set of bells so that the handbell group could continue to

bring joy and pleasure to people. In 2009, the Richmond Handbell Ringers staged a very successful 25th Australasian Festival. In more recent years, the group has attended further bell festivals in Tasmania, Perth and Adelaide. A three octave set of hand chimes was purchased in 2013 to augment the bells. The Richmond Handbell Ringers play for Probus clubs, senior citizen’s people, rest homes/

retirement villages, and sometimes at weddings and funerals. Bookings often need to be made more than a year ahead. When the bell group plays as a smaller ensemble of six ringers, it goes by the name of Richmond Handbell Choir, and this is as it will be for the upcoming concert at the Wesley Centre on Sunday afternoon, 5 May. The last time the handbell choir performed in Blenheim, was in 2014.

Rally racing a winner for Hospice By Bill McElhinney The chance to race around the track in a rally car at the Eastern States Speedway has proved a winner for Hospice Marlborough and the Marlborough Car Club. “We recently organised with the Speedway to bring eight rally cars out and take people for a spin,” Club president Richard Bateman says. “It proved to be really popular. We even had people coming over from Nelson for the event!” The rally car drivers raced around the track with their passengers, getting up to speeds of around 130kmh on the straight. “The look on people’s faces was amazing,” Richard says. “Most were grinning ear to ear.” The passengers paid for the thrilling experience and the rally drivers decided to donate the proceeds to Hospice Marlborough. “When we were deciding what to do with the proceeds, the Hospice was top of everyone’s list,” Richard says. Hospice Marlborough general manager Nicki Kitson and fundraising and event coordi-

nator Sandy Inwood were delighted to accept the donation. A gift from Kmart to local iwi has also been passed on to the Hospice. A thank-you gift of $1000 was initially given to Rangitane, Ngati Toa and Ngati Rarua members who blessed the new Kmart store in Blenheim at dawn with a karakea shortly before it opened last month. Rangitane ki Wairau member, Paora Mackie, said they decided to pass the koha on to Hospice Marlborough as it was a service that had helped “everybody”. The Hospice Marlborough Trust owns the hospice building and raises over $700,000 from the community each year to keep the hospice operating. It is a registered charitable trust. In 2005, the Hospice took over community palliative care nursing from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. At any one time, there can be approximately 60 patients on the hospice palliative care programme. The majority of these people are being cared for in their own homes or residences.

Ask your doctor about that test One in 10 Kiwis don’t feel comfortable asking their doctor about whether a treatment or test is necessary, a survey by Consumer NZ and the Council of Medical Colleges has found. The annual survey was carried out as part of the organisations’ Choosing Wisely campaign, which encourages people to ask their health professional four questions when a test or treatment is suggested: 1. Do I really need this test, treatment or procedure? 2. What are the risks? 3. Are there simpler, safer options? 4. What happens if I don’t do anything? Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin says people should feel able to question health care treatment options. “Understanding why your doctor is considering a test – and weighing up the benefits and risks – is every patient’s right,” Sue says. “Ask what is likely to happen if you do – or don’t – have a test or procedure. Are there potential side effects? What are the chances of getting results that aren’t accurate? Could that lead to more testing or another procedure? “By having these discussions, you and your doctor will be clearer on what’s the best thing to do for your

health and wellbeing.” The survey also found 21 per cent of consumers felt their doctor had recommended a test or treatment that wasn’t necessary. Of those, 24 per cent said they went ahead and had it anyway. Eighteen percent ignored the doctor’s recommendation. Thirty-five percent of consumers agreed or strongly agreed that some tests or treatments did not benefit the patient. While most felt their doctor always or often involved them in decisions about their care, one in five thought this only happened sometimes. Choosing Wisely medical director Dr Derek Sherwood said there was mounting evidence that more tests and procedures did not always equal better care. “While modern medicine has given us more ways than ever to diagnose and treat illness, sometimes, the best option may be to do nothing,” Derek says. “Tests, treatments and procedures have side effects and some may even cause harm. For example, CT scans and x-rays expose you to radiation; overuse of antibiotics leads to them becoming less effective; a false positive test may lead to painful and stressful further investigation.”

Marlborough Car Club president Richard Bateman hands the proceeds from a recent rally car event to Nicki Kitson and Sandy Inwood from Hospice Marlborough.

Greedy Kiwis said ‘No’ Dear Ed, The wealthy, selfish and greedy carried the day in the debate over a capital gains tax. The Coalition Government knew that New Zealanders wouldn’t vote for them if they introduced such a tax, so they dumped the idea. Not because they didn’t want to do it, but because greedy Kiwis wouldn’t let them. A person who invests in a small business that produces goods and services pays tax on all their profits. A person who works for wages or salary pays tax on all their earnings. Those who invest in property that accumulates passive gains do not. Contrary to popular belief, invest-

ing in land is not a productive activity. Productive activity may be conducted on the land, such as farming or building houses, but the ownership itself does not produce goods or services. A capital gains tax would have reduced distortion in investment choices, but New Zealand will carry on with its short-sighted, non productive housing investments. What a shame. The chance to do something transformational for our economy is lost. Instead, New Zealand remains almost the only rich democracy without a broad-based CGT. Grandpa Blenheim

Home is where the heart is Glenn Kirby is one of the busiest men in Marlborough. Jacob Page talks to him about work/life balance, why you usually can’t contact him on a Friday afternoon, and his love of Tottenham Hotspur. You could be forgiven for thinking Glenn Kirby is Mr Marlborough. Between his real estate career, broadcasting endeavours, quiz mastering, and community involvement, the 44-year-old has carved out an enviable niche, but it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. “People are able to recognise me in the street and I always think ‘that’s great but I have no idea who the hell you are’,” he chuckles. Glenn is a well-travelled man having lived in Timaru, Ashburton, Christchurch, Blenheim, Wanganui, Masterton twice, Tauranga, as well as short stints in Wellington and Auckland capped off with five years in London.

“You can get so into real estate and not have breathing space.” The former radio host and freelance MC and regular quiz master at The Clubs of Marlborough, says when it comes to his main job as a real estate agent, he tries to incorporate his past life into it in an effort to stand out. “I try to utilise the skills I learned in broadcasting to bring them into real estate so I can try to stand out from the many other agents out there.” Glenn was “made redundant from radio” for a second time in 2015 and a new plan had to be found. “While I was looking for other work, I MC’d the Bayleys Awards night and got asked if I’d like to work for them,” he says. “I was petrified but I spoke to my wife Hetty and she said you won’t know until you try and I took that as her tick of approval and went for

it and haven’t looked back.” Glenn says the real estate game can be all consuming but he has his own ways of finding a balance. “I have a very understanding wife and on a Friday afternoon I try to play a round of golf and switch my phone off. “You can get so into real estate and not have the breathing space.” After three years in the industry, Glenn says he is starting to see the hard work pay off. “It’s like a plane taking off. “You have to get a bit of momentum and you see your front wheels will lift off and then after time and hard work and making those contacts and getting a few results under your belt the back wheels take off and you’re into the air. “I’m in my third year so I’d like to say I’m in the air now. “Turbulence happens, some months it’s all go and then other months nothing happens and you have to be fine with that,” he says. Glenn says even after eight years, he still loves being the MC of the weekly quiz at The Clubs of Marlborough. ”We’re averaging 38 to 42 teams a week and we’ve had people who have been there right from the start. “When you’re in a role like that, you have to have fun too, mispronounce a word or two and be able to laugh at yourself.” Glenn, a self-confessed Tottenham Spurs football fanatic, aims to see their new stadium this Christmas during a family trip to the UK. “When I was a youngster my uncle got me a Liverpool scarf but it wasn’t until I was playing football in the Wairarapa that my captain gave me a Spurs shirt right before I was heading to London and told me to check them out. “When I arrived, I was two stops away from White Heart Lane. “So my first game was there and

it was so memorable - it was like a mix of going to church and a rave at the same time.” Glenn says no two real estate clients are the same but similarities exist. “Most of the time people are selling after death, debt or divorce, but everyone has their own reasons and it’s important to work out what they are. “A trend that we are seeing more

of is young people buying bigger houses so their parents can move in when they get older. When Glenn and Hetty returned to New Zealand following the 2005 London bombings, Marlborough won their attention. “When we got back two jobs came up at the same time, one in Rotorua and one was here and I initially chose Marlborough because I had family in Timaru

and thought that was at least the same island and the climate is amazing.” Glenn says he loves living in the area because of the opportunities the kids and families have. “My kids are in to everything and there are just so many options from flippa ball and water polo to kapa haka and dance studios,” he says. “It’s such a great place to be.”

New Triton 4WD GLXR is a whole lot meaner. With Easy Select 4WD and a new 6 Speed Manual Transmission, this beast is bred for the wild. It’s packed with safety features like Forward Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning, it’s highly intelligent. It has Apple CarPlay and is Android Auto compatible, it’s fully connected and covered by a 10 year Powertrain Warranty. But mostly, it’s a beast. Foreshore fun team need a hand

Alison Hinckley drives the popular Picton Rail and Sail train with passengers Mayor John Legget, his partner Anne Best, and, partially obscured, Rail and Sail’s first president and founder from 50 years ago, Gary Corburn.

By Bill McElhinney Thousands of people, thousands of rides, thousands of volunteer hours – Picton Rail and Sail on the Picton Foreshore has a lot to be proud of. The model trains and yachts hold special memories for children and adults all around New Zealand. Early in 1967 the Blenheim Model Engineers had to move out of their premises at the Blenheim Showgrounds, and were offered space to lease on the Picton Foreshore, and the Picton Society of Model Engineers was born. The facility is now run as a community project by a group of volunteers who drive the trains and maintain the pond, tracks and grounds. Volunteers keep Picton Rail and Sail entertainment running smoothly through summer. They can choose to be a station master, taking money for train rides and hiring out the boats, or to drive the miniature train.

This old-fashioned fun has kept the young at heart entertained for 50 years, offering a ride on the miniature train for 20 cents, with the same coin hiring a model boat for fun on the foreshore pond. “But we urgently need new volunteers, male and female, to carry us into the next half century,” Rail and Sail volunteer Brian Henstock says. “The financial reward is abysmal, but the joy and excitement on the faces of kids from two to 95 years is payment enough,” Brian says. “We need drivers and station masters on a roster basis,” Brian says. “Usually this is for only three hours every three months and possibly more often during school holidays and cruise ship visits. “Our volunteers can also assist in keeping the grounds tidy, the pool clean and maintain our rolling stock. “We are happy volunteers who

enjoy promoting our town,” Brian says. “Any profits made are given to Marlborough children’s charities. Two years ago after the earthquake we paid for every school child to come from Ward to have a totally free day in our town. Other local businesses also contributed. “With continued community support we hope to keep going for another 50 years!” In 2006 Picton Rail & Sail won the supreme award in the Marlborough Trustpower Community Awards - a great reward for the volunteer effort put in by a small group. The train rides and model sailing boats are available every Sunday, all public holidays (except Christmas Day and Boxing Day) and all school holidays (weather permitting). If you think you could help, please phone Graham Low on 03 573 6356 or Brian Henstock on 03 573 5119 for more information.

Wigs and gumboots It may be cooler, but trout are still biting for a good cause The Picton Women’s Institute collected $595.50 for the recent Gumboot Day appeal. The initiative, which asked Kiwis to wear gumboots for the day, was launched in an effort to bring in money that’d be used to provide young people with free mental health care. “It was a spur of the moment decision to walk around Picton and collect donations towards the cause that helps New Zealanders with depression,” Fran Hart-

9

ley says. “Members of the Picton Women’s Institute felt it was a really worthwhile cause, to help folk access the proper help when they need it most. “Wearing our green Women’s Institute aprons, gum boots, and even a green wig, we walked up and down Picton High Street and wish to express our grateful thanks to all the kind folk who donated money.” Women’s Institute is alive and well in Picton, Fran says, giving friendship and

fun to local women and also helping with charities. Comedian-turned-mental health advocate Mike King says Gumboot Day for mental health brought in close to $1 million. Mike says he is hugely optimistic about the future of Gumboot Up NZ, and the movement to de-stigmatise mental illness. “It’s about creating positive conversations around a really negative subject, and normalising something that everyone struggles with.”

With cooler weather now kicking in, Fish & Game says there’s plenty of opportunity for trout fishing ahead. Winter season licences are now available and they provide six months of fishing until the end of September. Policy and Planning Manager Robert Sowman says that for $78, an adult licence gives you the chance to target trout which are currently feeding up, to get themselves in top condition before spawning. “It really is a six-month

licence that provides for enjoyment in the great outdoors and the chance to take some home healthy wild food for the dinner table.” Robert says anyone who is planning to fish for one day or only a week or so has other good options. Fish & Game caters to Kiwi holidaymakers with well-priced Short Break (three day) and Long Break (nine day) licences. “Although many tributaries close for winter spawning there are still a large number of main rivers

and lakes that remain open to anglers,” Roberts says. In the South Island, many lakes and rivers remain open through the winter, with the added bonus than many lakes offer landlocked salmon for the angler. In Southland, Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri offer great fishing, as do Otago lakes like Wakitipu and Wanaka. For anglers looking for big fish, the Central South Island’s famed hydro canals are a ‘must visit’ destination at this time of year.

Marlborough Anzac Day commemorations

Havelock Anzac Day service Over 250 people attended the Havelock Anzac parade and the service held in the Havelock town hall, with refreshments served at the Havelock bowling club after the service. An Anzac photo display featured photos from the Climo family of Leonard John Climo, who was a private in the 26th NZ Infantry Battalion. Len enlisted and was sent to Egypt and then onto Italy for the Cassino campaign. On his return he never missed an Anzac service and he attended his last service before he passed away on May 31, 2018, aged 96 years.

Private Leonard John Climo was sent to Egypt and then onto Italy for the Cassino campaign.

Don Mckay was the piper at the Havelock Anzac Chief Petty Officer Ike Ikenasio, Warrant officer Teresa Ikenasio, medic, and Flight Sargent Day service. Mike Underwood at the Havelock Anzac Day service.

Anzac at Linkwater

A crowd of approximately 200 turned up at the Linkwater Anzac Day service. Photo supplied.

At dawn the flag was raised to half mast by WO2 (Retired) John Smith RNZEME. This signified the beginning of the preparations for this years ANZAC service at the Linkwater Memorial Hall. The Mahakipawa branch of Rural Women NZ were working in the kitchen preparing the morning tea and people being greeted at the door, just before the start at 0930hrs the hall was full of locals and tourists. In attendance were Guest speaker Colonel C.J.Faulls. RNZE, MDC Representa-

tive Councillor Nadine Taylor, president of the Picton RSA, Mr John McCarthy, Vicar Mardre, Sue Howarth of Havelock, and approximately 200 members of the public. As the hall is a memorial to our local soldiers, each year a tribute is read about one of the soldiers from the Roll of Honour. This year, it was the three Sutton brothers who went to WW1. All three returned and became an integral part of the valley’s life. One of the brothers George Sutton was the first Chairman of the Linkwater

Memorial Hall and was instrumental in its relocation and opening in 1924. This year’s community reader WO (Retired) Mr Simon Lamb, RNZAF, spoke of the impact military life has on families, which was the focus of the RSA this year, He Whanau Kotahi Tatou (we are all family). At dusk the flag was lowered, ending a successful ANZAC day in Linkwater. We would like to thank the Personel from Woodbourne Airforce base, the Marlborough RSA and Mr Phil Gibbison the bugler.

Harrier Club events

They're off! Harriers at the start of the Burton Cup cross country on Saturday.

Harriers race for Burton Cup The Marlborough Harrier Club had a very successful crosscountry event on Saturday at the Taylor Dam, the annual Burton Cup event. The original W.G. Burton Trophy was first presented in 1933 for a five- mile open handicap. It is now presented for a handicap cross country event in the calendar for all grades over varying distances. The race is handicapped, giving everyone a chance to win the trophy. This year was certainly different because unbeknown to us the Taylor Dam reserve was out of bounds. So thanks to Bill Hunter and Marl Kennedy and a GPS, two new courses were made up to cater for the varying distances.

The feedback at the finish line was “what a great cross-country course.” The event was run in very blustery, warm conditions, which tested the competitors to their limit. It was great to have an increased number turn out for the junior grades with many new comers joining in. The same went for veteran men, with five new runners that added to the competition. Results. 1000 metres, girls 7 and under: Honor McKenzie 1 (6:08) and fast actual time. Boys 7 and under: Joseph Gilhooly 1 (5:00 and fastest lap time.

The under-10-year-olds set off in the Burton Cup cross country event.

Fastest actual time, Neve McKenzie (8:30). 3000 metres, girls 14 and under; Jorja Bacchus 1 (16:53) and fastest actual time. Boys 14 and under: Michael James 1 (14:41); Finn McKenzie 2 (15:01). Fastest actual time, Finn McKenzie (12:46). 4000 metres, walkers: Sheila

Marlborough’s weekend of racing a success The form on day one proved to be on the money as Camino Racoso backed up his day one Prelude victory to take out the KAM Transport Marlborough Cup at Waterlea Raceway on Sunday. The John and Karen Parsons runner proved a class above in the two feature races on Friday and Sunday. Camino Rocoso chased down pace setter Smokehouse Bay in the $25,000 feature on the final day, proving its win two days prior

John O'Brien

was no fluke. Marlborough Racing Club chairman, John O’Brien, said the meeting was a success and showed what horse racing can be in the provinces. “We were certainly happy the weather played its part, every horse had its chance and we had good crowds on both days,” he said. He said he was thrilled with the high number of maiden nominations, which saw an extra race added to each day. “Frankly, that’s what racing in

the regions is all about; it gives the second tier horses a chance of coming here and winning a race. “Every trainer that I’ve spoken to said they loved the meeting and would bring their teams again, so that is pleasing.” The lone local runner, Ruby Choux Rose for Waterlea trainer Donna Green, managed a fourth on the first day but couldn’t replicate the strong effort on Sunday. The club will now look to make its 100th meeting, next year, one to remember.

The Marlborough Harrier Club meets at the Oliver Park clubrooms at 6pm on Thursday for a pack/ training run or walk. Reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers regardless of ability are welcome. Everyone is welcome to participate. On Saturday there is a pack run at the Twin Dams and/or Tirohanga Track. Table tennis pipe-opener The pipe-opener table tennis tournament was held last Thursday and after a pulsating night of action featuring Marlborough’s top players, Matthias Krönert won the title, beating Matt Millar in the final. Matthias won 10-12,7-11,12-10.119,11-7 in an entertaining match of attack against defence. Matt’s defensive skills coupled with some superb winners kept the third seed at bay in the first two sets. The German then changed his game slightly, putting more variety into his serves and taking the ball early to rush Matt into his shots. Matt is making a comeback to the sport this season and this was his third hard match in a row. In the semi-final, he beat the top seed Nathan Watson 10-12,7-11,1210,11-9.11-7 with their differing styles of play making for an entertaining match. In the previous round, Millar beat Jacqui Wood, another high quality player, in four sets. Jacqui went on to take fifth place. Matthias reached the final with an 11-8,14-12, 11-9 win over the second seed, Alex Kennedy. Another newcomer, Will Kim, won the special plate final over Jason Kennedy by 11-6,11-6,9-11,11-5. The youngest players in the field were promising juniors, Vanessa Wood-Lin and Joseph Ruwhiu. Vanessa won the plate beating her grandmother Marion Wood in the final in straight sets while Joseph played well against his experienced opponents.
