Oyster champ! By Bill McElhinney Marlborough is home to a three-time national champion, but one few of us knew about. Meet Darryl ‘Dagwood’ McDonald, the Bluff oyster eating champion. Darryl has travelled down to Bluff regularly for the popular Bluff Oyster Festival. A few years ago he decided to enter the oyster eating competition, and won. Since then he’s won three times, and will be heading back to Bluff at the end of the month to defend his title. Continued on page 2. Darryl ‘Dagwood’ McDonald demonstrates the form that has made him a three-time national champion!

Darryl heading south to defend his title Continued from page 1. But the oyster eating competition does not involve wolfing down copious quantities of the Bluff delicacies, although Darryl wouldn’t mind doing that. “I love oysters,” he says. “And all the other seafood on offer there. Bluff is a great place to go for kiamoana. “There’s kina, blue cod, even muttonbirds, and I love ‘em all!” Even muttonbirds? “Hell yes,” says Darryl. “I always bring a few back as well. Great kai!” The oyster eating competition is a test of speed and skill. “You stand at a tall bench,” Darryl says, “with a plate of a dozen oysters in front of you. “You must have one hand behind your back, and then you’ve got to pick the oysters up using a toothpick and pop them in your mouth as quick

as you can. “And that’s the tricky part, because they slide off the toothpick pretty easily.” So how quickly can Darryl wolf down a dozen oysters? “In just under 10 seconds,” he says with a grin. Being the current champion doesn’t mean Darryl automatically qualifies for this years challenge. “You have to compete in a series of heats before you get to the final,” he says. And Darryl doesn’t take his title lightly. He trains for the event, and when we caught up with him last week he had just ordered in four dozen more oysters with which to practise his winning technique. When he’s not speed eating, Darryl enjoys his oysters with just a squeeze of lemon juice, maybe a little grind of black

pepper, but definitely raw. Darryl will take a few extra days when he goes south as he has relatives who work in the Southland seafood industry to visit. “It’s a great weekend if you’re into seafood,” he says. The Bluff Festival attracts 5000 people and was sold out before Waitangi Day. Air New Zealand has laid on two flights from Auckland and Wellington to bring people to the Festival, and one of Invercargill’s largest hotels, the Kelvin Hotel, was booked out a year in advance of the weekend of the Festival. Darryl with his trophies. He'll be heading down to Bluff soon to defend his oyster eating title.

Pest passenger a wakeup call for boaties The Marlborough District Council’s biosecurity team, working with Marlborough Marinas, recently responded to the worst case of Mediterranean fanworm seen to date on a vessel in Marlborough. The yacht had recently sailed from Auckland and moored at Waikawa Marina. The pest was immediately destroyed but significant follow-up A yacht that recently sailed from Auckland and surveillance work will be needed in moored at Waikawa Marina was found to be areas where the boat had travelled. Biosecurity Manager, Jono Underheavily infested with Mediterranean fanworm. wood, says Mediterranean fanworm Photo: Marlborough Marinas

is a serious threat to Marlborough’s coastal waters and aquaculture industry. The Mediterranean fanworm is unwanted because it can quickly form dense colonies, forcing out native species and interfering with their ability to feed and breed. It has been found growing on scallops in Whangarei Harbour and has the potential to spread on to other shellfish. “Vessel owners and operators need to play their part, know the rules, and keep their vessels clean, especially when moving around”

Jono says. “Everyone needs to be especially vigilant moving boats from northern hubs such as Auckland and Whangarei, where the fanworm is well-established and can easily establish itself on to a vessel. If you’re moving something south, a lift and clean immediately prior to departure is your best chance of avoiding an unwanted passenger.” The owner was unaware of the fouling, which was probably smaller in size when the vessel came south six months ago.

Big blue makes its marc

inbrief

By Bill McElhinney We love the wine, but the waste material from Marlborough’s burgeoning wine industry has been an ongoing problem. After the juice has been squeezed out of a tonne of grapes, you’re left with about 25 percent waste; the stems, pulp, skins and seeds, which is known as grape marc. Wine companies have struggled with the storage and disposal of grape marc, and as environmental standards have become more stringent, a number of companies have been charged after leachate from the marc has polluted nearby areas. But now a new Marlborough company, PacRimEnviro, has developed what it believes is an innovative and sustainable solution for dealing with grape marc. Company founders and directors, Chris Bowhill and Chris Walbran, have been trialling drying the marc to a level which prevents leaching. The marc goes into the big blue dryer and the liquid comes out as steam. The result is a dry, sweet-smelling product that has the potential to be repurposed into a number of useful products. They’ve been working away quietly for some months out at the Crafar Crouch Riverlands site, where they’ve installed the dryer hich can process 4.5 tonnes of marc an hour. “The result is a product that can be stored safely,” Chris says. He comes from a background in drying and food processing, having previously helped establish the successful honey drying company, G & S Foods, in Canvastown. G & S processes honey into dried powder and packaged honey throat lozenges. “Grape marc can be a useful resource, not a waste product,” Chris says. “The dried marc can be turned into pellets for fires, or fire logs.

Blenheim woman Emily Stein, who had battled cancer since 2016 and was an advocate for the funding of a cancer drug, has passed away aged 32. She passed away at home last Friday and a funeral service is being held today to celebrate Emily’s life. Emily was diagnosed after the birth of her youngest daughter Mabel. She is survived by her husband Chris McMurtrie and daughters Ada and Mabel.

Teachers to strike May 29 Marlborough primary and secondary teachers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking part in the joint strike action that will take place across the country on May 29. NZEI national president Lynda Stewart flew into Blenheim on Monday to visit a local school and kindergarten, and to attend a paid union meeting for the Kindergarten Collective Agreement.

Refugees to be settled in Blenheim next year

ABOVE: Chris Bowhill beside the drier he has made to process grape marc. The unit can be fuelled by biowaste. LEFT: Chris with some of the finished product - grape marc that has been dried and could be processed into a number of useful products.

It could be used for animal feed, replacing expensive palm kernel brought in from overseas. It contains a lot of high value nutrients. “It could be a slow release soil conditioner or could even be burned in commercial boilers instead of coal,” Chris says. The grape marc drier can be heated by burning bio fuels such

as wood waste, and could even eventually be fired with pellets made from the dried marc. Chris believes the company could eventually also deal with other bio waste materials such as garden green waste and forestry waste. Marlborough District Council solid waste manager, Alec Mc-

Neil, says the council has been in discussions with the company about treating green waste, and he is optimistic about the process. “Chris has a lot of experience in this field,” Alec says, “and what they’re doing will remove the problems with storing leachate. It looks good so far, and I wish them luck.”

Blenheim will be one of six locations selected as additional settlement locations for refugees, following the Government’s decision to increase the annual refugee quota to 1500. It’s planned that refugees will begin to be settled in Blenheim from April 2020.

Feast Marlborough a big success By Bill McElhinney Feast Marlborough, held over the weekend in conjunction with the St Clair Vineyard Half Marathon, was another major success. Bayleys Friday Night Feast attracted a record crowd – with more stalls and more people than the previous year, organiser Chris Shaw says. “It goes to show the pulling power of Marlborough produce,” Chris says. The four day food extrava-

ganza kicked off on Thursday with the WK Gala Feast, which once again was hugely popular, Chris says. The celebration continued the following night at the Bayleys Friday Night Feast street party in central Blenheim, followed on Saturday and Sunday with Marlborough Underground, a series of exclusive culinary experiences in unique locations. “Several of the people who attended the long lunch at

Waterfall Bay, in the Marlborough Sounds, told me it was the best meal they had ever eaten,” Chris says. “And the Aunties of Manaaki, with their unique take on modern Maori cuisine at Omaka Marae, was another big success.” Feast Marlborough is gaining momentum every year, Chris says, so is going from strength to strength. “We’ll be back next year – watch this space!”

Pine Valley project gets a boost By Bill McElhinney Fundraising for new facilities at the popular Pine Valley camp has been given a boost with two recent donations. A Clubs of Marlborough quiz team, The Microbes, has donated $500 to the project, and Blue Door Marlborough has handed over $20,000. “We’re building an administration centre and accommodation on site to house a full-time camp manager,” Pine Valley trustee, Graeme Ellis says. “The support from the Marlborough community has been

heartening, and shows that the facility is well-loved by many,” Graeme says. “These donations will really help us towards our $270,000 target. We’re really grateful. “Having a dedicated centre manager/facilitator will enable us to offer much more to groups visiting the centre, and to keep the camp fresh, functional and fun.” The plans are in response to the retirement of long-term Pine Valley administrators, local farmers Lloyd and Val Mapp, and the relocation of the camp’s maintenance manager.

The Centre has been used by Marlborough children and their families for 35 years. “School groups, sports clubs, social clubs, private or family groups can use the camp,” Graeme says. “We have lots of bookings from both schools and private groups. “The people who come here can enjoy an array of fun activities such as an adventure playground, confidence course and waterslide, or try a range of activities such as mountain, biking, night hikes, bush walks, orienteering.”

Blue Door committee member Tony Hawke hands Graeme Ellis a $20,000 cheque for the Pine Valley project with Blue Door manager Bronwen Demmocks and staff member Lani Taie-Register looking on.

Vera’s hits help local groups By Bill McElhinney A nostalgic musical trip down memory lane was a hit in Blenheim and has helped boost the funds of four local organisations. Vera Lynn: Hits of the Blitz, starring Vicki Lee and featuring the Marlbor-

ough District Brass Band, performed two shows in the ASB Theatre last month. “We decided the shows would be a fundraiser for Alzheimers Marlborough, the Marlborough RSA, Garrison Marlborough and the Brass Band,” Thelma Sow-

man, from concert sponsors Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors, says. Vicki has been entertaining audiences for over 40 years, touring the country performing the songs Vera Lynn made famous during World War II.

Megan wins despite wrong turn By Celeste Alexander The sun was shining and there was barely a breath of wind as around 3500 people took part in the annual St Clair Half Marathon event on Saturday. The 21.1km course attracted many outof-town competitors who converged in Blenheim for the fundraising event which supports Bowel Cancer New Zealand. Organisers Chris Shaw and wife Anna Polson say the total amount raised is “looking around $20,000”. “I think we really nailed it this year,” Chris smiles. “It was such a great day, everyone was so happy and seemed to really enjoy the whole event and the support shown by everyone involved has been incredible. “I feel pretty privileged having a bunch of mates helping with the event and the volunteers are a really great team to work with. Everyone cares and it shows right throughout the event, which is why it works so well,” Chris says. The 21.1km course winds through 21 vineyards, up and over short stop banks and alongside the Wairau River. “We are so lucky to have 21 land owners on board… from corporates including Cloudy Bay through to the Gane family who let us cut holes in fences and come onto their land. We are extremely fortunate,” Chris adds. As supporters began to line up at the finish to cheer on the walkers and runners, it was Nelson student Yuta Kambayashi who came through as the first male in the 21.1km run.

Amazingly, Yuta had taken a wrong turn and had run one kilometre before realising and turning back. The small detour did not disadvantage him as he managed to finish with the time of 1:16:35.67. Behind him was local boy George Varney with his time of 1:21:37.45. The first woman to cross the finish was Blenheim’s own Megan Graham who had also taken a wrong turn but still managed to win with her time of 1:22:42.85. “It was hard work once I had realised I took the wrong turn, and had to battle my way through 2000 people to get back to the front. But overall I have really enjoyed the event and the colours and scenery are absolutely beautiful,” she says. This was Megan’s second time competing, not including last year as she was pregnant with daughter Ameika. Behind Megan in second place was Laura Smidt of Woodbourne with her time of 1:30:12.38. Results of top placings: 21.1km Walk (male) – 1st Andrew Lingard, 2nd Paul Severins, 3rd Peter Hague. 21.1km Walk (female) – 1st Kathy Peszynski, 2nd Sharyn Davey, 3rd Kim Register. 21.1km Hybrid (male) – 1st Jared Van Vianen, 2nd Jeremy Duggan, 3rd Jasper Loncke. 21.1km Hybrid (female) – 1st Erin Neilson, 2nd Marianne Timpson, 3rd Mia Truscott.

The Art of Passion Former real estate agent Mark Stevenson says he is as busy as ever even if he is technically retired. He talks to Jacob Page about his career moves, his love of art and why he bucks the trend and is so open with his collection. There’s nothing stereotypical about Mark Stevenson’s art collection or the way he utilises it. The Stevenson Collection housed on Picton’s High Street is a passion project for Mark that will likely never be complete. He has turned it into his retirement occupation. The Stevenson Collection has more than 400 pieces and is recognised as one of the most extensive collections in New Zealand. “Many of them are considered museum quality. “We loan a lot of our art out as well so there’s always something in Auckland, Wellington or Nelson. By his own admission, Mark was 30-years-old and well into his teaching career before his love of art truly developed. “There wasn’t one trigger moment that I can look back on and say ‘that’s when I became an art lover’,” he said. “I just purchased one or two paintings and I became more engrossed in the world of art and I started spending more time visiting public galleries as well as dealer galleries. “As I did that, I met more people and it took off from there.” Mark says he started to get to know some of the artists. “Once I got to know them, I got to know their work and it imploded on itself from there.” Mark says he does have moments where he ponders how his collection became so extensive. “I remember a few years ago my wife Bernie wanted to do a catalogue of all the pieces and I didn’t want to because I didn’t want to know how many I had,” he said. He said he always wanted his collection to be enjoyed and visible and his gallery in Picton allows that. “Basically, anyone can come and have a look seven days a week, and I will give them a free guided tour.

“There’s always humour and stories about the art work as we go along.” He said getting his hands on a piece painted in 1929 by Francis Hodgkins called ‘A Country Window’ was a highlight. “When the art dealer rung me and said he had found the Hodgkins piece that I really needed, I remember it was 2002 and he wouldn’t tell me anything about it other than I had to come down to have a look at it and when I saw it I just couldn’t believe it. “We hung it up and I remember calling Bernie and I told her what I was looking at and I said ’I don’t know what to say’. “She came right back with ‘no would be a good start’.” Mark admits he’s largely indoctrinated his family into enjoying art but he never wanted to make the art more important than it was. “I always made sure the art wasn’t put on a pedestal.

“If the kids were running around the house and bumped into one, it wasn’t a big deal, it was just part of family life.” Mark admits there’s no deliberate themes to the pieces he buys, he just wants people to view it and enjoy it. “Art is to be viewed and as I say to people, you don’t have to like the art, just enjoy the experience.

“I’m always going to be collecting.” “I’m fully retired, this is my passion and I love sharing it with people. “I love it when people come in here and say ‘when is that artist going to finish that painting?’ I think that’s great because they are having a reaction to art.” Mark said he will always look

to add to his collection. “I’m always going to be collecting and I’ve been incredibly well behaved so far this year and we all know that isn’t going to last. “I don’t consider myself retired because I spend 30 or 40 hours a week on art. “I remember about 15 years ago I was in the office and Bernie was helping on reception and she took a phone call from a gentleman who asked if I was in the office and she said yes, and he asked if he could speak with me and she said no. “He asked why and she replied ‘because I want a new kitchen before Mark gets another piece of art’. “Now that art dealer refers to her as Mrs Kitchen.” Mark says he misses the people in real estate but he was happy he had closed that chapter on his life for this one. Mark was once the principal of St Joseph’s School in Picton

before his love of houses drew him to real estate. “I think it was because when we grew up in Timaru, Mum raised four boys in a state house and to own a house was a really huge thing so I went from a catholic school principal to a real estate agent. “I always wanted to have three or four careers, I’ve had three and I look at art collecting not as a career but more of a fulltime passion. “Every day I come in to the gallery when I’m on my own and I’m amazed at the collection. “There’s a piece from Bill Hammond here which is probably one of the best he’s ever done and a lot of people come in here to see it. “I’m very eclectic with my art, I just love it all. “There’s an awful lot of colourful works here but that’s about the only theme. “I want art to be available to people and this is my passion.”

New Triton 4WD GLXR is a whole lot meaner. With Easy Select 4WD and a new 6 Speed Manual Transmission, this beast is bred for the wild. It’s packed with safety features like Forward Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning, it’s highly intelligent. It has Apple CarPlay and is Android Auto compatible, it’s fully connected and covered by a 10 year Powertrain Warranty. But mostly, it’s a beast. Indoor plants have health benefits Many households have flowers or plants inside, but did you know about their excellent health benefits? See how you could take advantage of potted plants and flowers. Breathing easier: When you breathe, your body takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. During photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This opposite pattern of gas use makes plants and people natural partners. Adding plants to interior spaces can increase oxygen levels. At night, photosynthesis ceases, and plants typically respire like humans, absorbing oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. A few plants –orchids, succulents and epiphytic bromeliads –do just the opposite, taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Place these plants in bedrooms to refresh air during the night. Natural healers: The aloe vera plant (Aloe barberae) is also known as ‘lily of the desert,’ the ‘plant of immortality’ and the medicine plant. The aloe vera plant has many healing benefits, including its ability to clean air. The gel inside an aloe plant can help heal cuts and is also very effective at soothing burns, including sunburn. Ancient Egyptians recorded use of this herbal plant in treating burns, infections and parasites. The leaves of this super plant can also help to alleviate asthma symptoms by boiling the leaves in water and breathing in the vapour. Fresh air: NASA carried out a study

Having plants inside the home can have many great health benefits.

called the Clean Air Study to determine which plants help to clean the air we breathe by eliminating harmful toxins. The spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is one of the plants on the list. It is one of the most popular and easiest to grow of house plants. The spider plant is said to clean

the air in your house of benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene. These are all common volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are emitted into the air in our homes by everyday items such as furniture, carpets and common household appliances. Ornamental and useful: The rubber

plant (Ficus elastica) is another plant featured in NASA’s Clean Air Study. They are popular ornamental plants with leathery, glossy oval shaped leaves. Rubber plants rank high on the list of house plants that eliminate toxins such as formaldehyde from the air in your home. As time goes

on, the rubber plant becomes even more efficient at eliminating toxic compounds from the air. Formaldehyde can be released into the air from furniture and flooring, as well as common household items that you might not think of, such as air fresheners, hair products and nail polish.

improve your entertaining area. One way to maximise the outdoor space around your home is to build a deck. Just like any indoor space, a deck can be customised to include multiple levels, overhead structures, include space for a spa and can even have shade and shelter added. • Consider your deck as an opportunity to add a ‘bonus’ room by having it fully enclosed to create a comfortable indoor/ outdoor sitting area. • Surround the deck area with plants and trees to add privacy and a beautiful natural landscape.

• Decks do not have to be square or rectangle in size. They can be curved, include levels and be constructed from a variety of timber. • For something a little different, maybe consider a more ‘cottage feel’ by adding a paved area leading up to your deck. • Deep deck steps are great spaces for displaying potted plants, sculptures and an array of colour. • Already have an existing deck? No problems, have a pergola constructed overhead and add trained climbers for great builtin shade. Contact your local deck specialist and share your ideas to create the perfect deck for your home.

to add an interesting pop of colour and texture to the room.

Redecorating doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are some easy yet effective ideas that can be used in the home or business. • A popular decorating idea is the use of metallic colours. From lamps and furniture, to hardware and artwork, little touches of chrome, silver, rose gold, brass and copper can add that interesting pop of colour to any room. • Gallery walls are another popular trend. You can display a variety of photos or artworks on the wall by using frames similar in style and colour. Or if you want to

go the other way and be different, use different styles of frames. • An alternative to the gallery wall is the use of statement pieces of art. Find large pieces that you love which by themselves, can be the feature of a wall. • There is a shift towards more natural décor including organic and earthy colours. Whether it be paint, curtains, rugs or ornamental pieces look to the calming greens that are retro yet current. • The use of geometric patterns are another interesting way to change up your décor. Mirrors,

frames, pillows, lighting fixtures and even wallpaper make interesting room features. • Do you have an old, dinged and scratched dining table at home? • Don’t throw it away; instead revamp it by tiling the top of the table. This not only covers up the damage, but it allows you to introduce colour, patterns and a whole new design to your family dining area. • Speaking of revamping, consider changing the upholstery of old and tired furniture. Make them look new and modern by using fresh fabric or leather.

How relaxing is your bedroom? Have you ever wondered how your bedroom ‘Feng Shui’ could be affecting your sleep? Here are just a few Feng Shui tips that may help with sleep and the overall comfort of a room. Note, these tips might work for some people and not others. Bedroom location: Choose bedrooms at the backend of your house as they are usually quieter. Plus you will also enjoy higher levels of privacy. Get work out of the bedroom: Work and sleep don’t mix, so avoid work-related furniture in the bedroom, such as a desk. If you have a desk in your bedroom, you may go to sleep thinking about work instead of relaxing. Worse, it may invoke work-

related stress, which can significantly impact your sleep quality. This applies mostly to adults and not students, because the adults are the ones who get more pressure from work due to the need to support the family and the kids. The easy cure to this is to remove the desk or other furnitures that remind you of work. Bed placements: Having a headboard against the wall gives a subtle sense of security that could help you fall asleep easier. This again has to do with our survival instincts and sense of security. Avoid placing the head of a bed below a window: The window is the gateway

between your bedroom and the outside world, so when you sleep with your head directly under a window your sleep is more easily disrupted by the noise, light, scent and temperature from the outside. When the sound, movement, or scent is unfamiliar, they will alert your survival instincts and completely wake you up, sometimes making it hard for you to fall asleep again. Block out the light: Even a little bit of lighting can disrupt your sleep, simply because light can penetrate our eyelids and influence our biological clock. You are in complete control of the lights in your bedroom. However, you have little or no

control of the lights outside of your home. That is why you need blinds and curtains that can completely block out the light from the outside. If your current blinds or curtains have light shining through the cracks at night, it may be worthy to invest in double layered curtains to improve your sleep. Move electronics away from your bed: People today are often attached to their electronics and smartphones. Staring at this artificial light before bed could be affecting your sleep. Remove them from easy-access, and you can find your sleep quality improve.

Archie to be very popular It’s official, the names Archie and Harrison may now be set to become a whole lot more popular now that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have named their first child, son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. According to the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs, the popularity of babies being named Archie and Harrison have risen over the last decade, ranking closely to one another in 2018 on the top 100 list. Archie came in at 23rd with 138 babies taking the name, and Harrison was close behind at 28th with 128 babies given the moniker. The latest royal baby will likely spark a new naming trend for

Archie and Harrison, much as his fathers did. Following the Duke’s birth in 1984, the name Harry steadily climbed popularity charts, ascending from eight babies taking the title in 1985 to 127 in 2014. After a slight decline in 2015, the name made a popular comeback in 2018, with the moniker ranking 22nd on the top 100 baby names, likely a result of the Duke and Duchess’ marriage. We don’t only have the Duke to thank for the increase of the names popularity. One of the world’s most beloved fictional characters, Harry Potter, was likely another catalyst in the growing use of the name.

Along with the power to interpret naming trends, if you find yourself a soon-to-be parent wishing you could share in what is likely a very royal treatment for the new mum and dad, SmartStart should be your first stop. Jeff Montgomer y, Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages says, “SmartStart is an online portal that provides step-by-step support for new parents as well as information on naming your baby.” “Services can be accessed quickly online, making it easy to choose a midwife, access Best Start payments, organise parental leave, and register your baby” Mr Montgomery says.

Family receives Rod’s QSM By Bill McElhinney It was a proud day for members of the late Rod Eatwell’s family when they gathered at Government House last week to receive Rod’s QSM. The Queen Charlotte Track stalwart Rod Eatwell knew about his latest honour, but didn’t live to collect it. Rod, 90, died when his car crashed at Koromiko, between Picton and Blenheim, last year. He was been awarded the Queen’s Service medal in the latest New Year Honours. Rod, who farmed at Kenepuru Head,

was one of the prime movers in the establishment of the Kenepuru Walkway, which later became the Queen Charlotte Track. He opened his land up for the track and spent more than 30 years maintaining and improving it. Rod had accepted the award about a month before his death, and was very excited about it, his son John, says. “We’re pleased he knew about it and had the recognition for all his efforts. As a family, we’re very proud of the things he did, but it’s always nice to have the external recognition.”

We are looking for a Viticulture Technician to support our Awatere Site, with leading, planning and implementing day to day activities across 400ha of our Awatere vineyards. Blenheim man wins bronze at world Aquabike Champs Local man, Paul Sell, has won a bronze medal at the World Aquabike Championships. Paul was amongst over 40 Kiwi multisport athletes competing at the International Triathlon Union Multisport World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, from April 27 to May 4. The event saw over 4000 athletes from across the globe representing their countries in sprint and standard distance triathlon, cross tri, aquathlon, aquabike and long distance triathlon. Paul competed in the Aquabike event in the M45-49 category, which was to be a 3km river swim and a 109km bike. However, due to cold water and air temperatures on the morning of the event, the swim was shortened to 1500m. This didn’t play to Paul’s strengths, as he is normally one of the stronger swimmers in multisport events. He exited the water in second place in his age group and eighth overall before a sluggish transition, led to the three lap bike course, which had over 1500m of climbing, an exceptionally fast descent and a tricky, technical descent. Despite crashing on the latter, Paul managed to complete the course in the third fastest time in his age group and 12th overall, giving him a creditable third place finish in his age group and eighth overall. He finished behind another Kiwi, Brendon Vesty, an ex-professional cyclist from Hawkes Bay, who took home the gold medal. New Zealand finished sixth on the medal table with eight golds, six silvers and seven bronzes, coming behind much bigger teams from Spain, Great Britain, the USA, France and Italy, but beating equally big teams from Germany and Australia.

Despite a crash on the cycle leg, Paul Sell still managed to win bronze at the World Aquabike Championships in Spain.

Badminton reps upset Canterbury The Marlborough badminton division three rep team upset its Canterbury opponents on Saturday for the first time in many years. The top womens doubles pairing of Cloe Vining and Jessica Crosbie carried on the success taking out their opponents 21-19 21-19. Bhardwaj and Vining went on to win their singles matches, Bhardwaj in a tough three set battle. The team required one of the remaining three mixed doubles

matches to win and the pairings of Timms and Vining and Bhardwaj and Crosbie combined to clinch their tough three set matches for the victory. Earlier in the day Marlborough went down to their Nelson rivals 8-3. The team started well with wins to both mens doubles pairings, Jordan Thomas taking out his singles. But the Nelson team were
