Strike action By Celeste Alexander The government’s latest offer for primary and secondary teachers and principals was “the same proposal, just dressed up as something new”, according to Redwoodtown principal Aaron Vercoe. It’s the same sentiment echoed throughout Marlborough schools as they prepare for mass strike action on Wednesday, May 29. This will be the first time that primary and secondary teachers strike together, and while it’s not the outcome they were working towards, the teaching ‘crisis’ needs to be addressed, Aaron says. Continued on page 2. Redwoodtown School principal Aaron Vercoe says offers from the government still do not address issues faced by teachers.

‘We want a positive outcome’ Continued from page 1. “Strike action is not what we want to see happen. We would rather be in our classrooms delivering quality education to our kids, but we really need the government to listen and prioritise the major issues like pay parity and support for learning needs,” he says. Aaron who has worked in the education sector for 15 years, has witnessed the ‘emerging crisis’ including the escalation in learning behaviours in students, an increasing workload across the sector and a reduction in applications for teaching positions. “Teachers need time and resources to teach. The students deserve the best we can give but with the way things are going it’s becoming harder and harder. “Pay parity is also a key issue. A teacher is a teacher whether it’s in primary or secondary and unfortunately primary has lost its pay parity. “We also want people to want to become teachers… it’s one of the most important jobs as we might just have the next Prime Minister sitting in one of our schools,” Aaron says. Primary and secondary teachers across New Zealand voted in secret ballots recently, overwhelmingly in favour of taking joint strike action. The announcement was made

on Sunday by the NZEI Te Riu Roa and the Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA). The government’s latest offer includes a $698 million pay improvement package for primary teachers and principals, and a $500 million package for secondary teachers. The strike action falls one day before the government delivers its Budget 2019 on

May 30. Unless there is a major shift by the government on its approach to the teacher collective contract bargaining, the strike action looks to be going ahead and families are advised to plan for alternative care for their children that day. The unions are encouraging the public to join them at public events, and an announcement as to where and

how in Marlborough they will be held, will be made soon. Earlier this week another announcement was made; Redwoodtown School teacher Ciara Belcher has taken on the role of NZEI Te Riu Roa Marlborough Chairperson. Former chairperson Dave Paterson stepped down from the position recently after retiring from teaching at Picton School.

Wedding fair already a sellout By Celeste Alexander For well over 20 years Blenheim has played host to an annual bridal expo which this year has been given a new name and a revamp. Now known as the ‘Marlborough Wedding Fair’, this event will be held at the Marlborough Convention Centre on June 23 from 11am – 3pm. Already the fair has attracted huge interest from businesses,

with committee member Carol Taylor confirming there will be 46 stall sites. “This will be the biggest and best we’ve had! It really has been a sell-out success,” Carol says. There will be everything from wedding venue hire, photography and catering through to beauty, celebrants and even jewellery. “Anyone thinking of getting married is encouraged to come along and look around. In the foyer area a beautiful display of wedding gowns will be on show, and for the first 100 people through the doors there will be a goodie bag given out. Entry into the Marlborough Wedding Fair is $5 per person which will be donated to the Marlborough Child Cancer Foundation. “This event is very much charity

based so the proceeds from the entry will benefit local families who are supported by the Child Cancer Foundation,” Carol says. Working together to organise the Marlborough Wedding Fair is a group of local volunteers including Carol Taylor, Trina Russell, Karen Bull, Hayley Lang and Steph Ellis. Poetry in motion By Aimee O’Hagan New Zealand’s 11th poet laureate, Selina Tusitala Marsh, recently paid an exciting visit to Marlborough Girls’ College. On Monday morning, she spoke to an assembly of approximately 300 students about her past achievements and her love of words. Marlborough Girls’ College librarian, Colleen Shipley, says that Selina’s talk was “truly inspiring”. “It is particularly empowering for girls to know they don’t have to fit in,” Colleen says. After speaking to the girls, Selina ran a more intimate, poetry-writing workshop in the school library. The group broke for lunch – which was hosted by MGC’s pasifika students – and then continued the workshop until the bell signalled the end of schooltime. “Selina doesn’t visit schools that often,” Colleen says. “So it was very special to have her.” But Selina was not only in Blenheim to speak to the girls about her love of literature and hold a poetry-writing workshop; she was also here to run. Together, Selina and ten students from MGC participated in the St Clair Half Marathon, which was held last Saturday. Whilst running the 21km course, the 11 took turns carrying the tokotoko (a traditional, symbolic Maori talking stick) and composing two lines of poetry each.

Speed limits review The Marlborough District Council is to review speed limits on local roads across the region in a two-stage process in 2019 and 2020, through its local roads asset management agency Marlborough Roads. “Each year we receive public submissions asking for a particular road’s speed to be lowered,” Mayor John Leggett says. “Marlborough Roads had intended to undertake the local roads and state highways review together next year, but the Council asked them to bring the local roads review forward.” “There will be two stages of public consultation. The first will be later this year and gather the public’s views on road safety issues and speed limits, which will inform the writing of a draft speed bylaw that goes to the Council for adoption in late 2019.” The Council will receive a subsidy from the New Zealand Transport Agency to fund the review.

No frosty mornings yet Marlborough Girls' College students, Sophie Woodhouse (left), Charlotte Westend, Alex Henderson, and Aria Oliver with New Zealand's 11th Poet Laureate, Selina Tusitala Marsh (centre). Sophie holds the tokotoko.

The result was a collaborative poem named, “RUN – WRITE – READ”. But why – one may ask – did they do it? “As someone who loves trail running, I thought I’d marry my two passions together,” Selina explains. “I believe in demystifying the

poetry writing experience.” She adds that engaging in an experience like this really “opens the doors to what a poem is, how a poem behaves, and what kinds of people get to write a poem”, which – says Selina – “is everyone”. “If you can move the pen across the page, then you can write.” Selina’s inclusion of the tokotoko

was because of it’s “beautiful, poetic connections”. The decision to run as a group of 11 came from the fact that the tokotoko comes apart in 11 pieces. “For me, the tokotoko is a poem... It appeals to warrior senses,” Selina says. “It is the library of Aotearoa, New Zealand.”

I run as bagpipes glean, ice cream dreams, I run, feet beat over, popcorn gravel, I am a wing beating bird in the cobaltpink sky above, I run to fill my lungs with fresh air, To endure through pain and stem new passions within me,

I run to push myself, I run to the sound of music, I run with the leaves and stones crushing under my shoes, I run for the challenge of it, I run as the leaves crush under my tired feet, I run to survive,

I run and laugh when I’m tired, I run to see what my legs are capable of doing, I run to show other people I can run 21k, I run to have fun, I run to feel alive and feel life around me, The earth beneath my feet, sun on my face, and wind in my hair.

RUN - WRITE - READ I run to prove to others I can, I run to feel the earth around me stop, I run with passion, but when rain falls down I run with joy, I run the red-earthed row, I run in vintage joy, in flow, I run along bubbly streams, past angelic queens,

It’s been the warmest May for the past 20 years, Plant & Food research scientist Rob Agnew says. So far May has been 2 °C warmer than normal, with no frosts. The weather patterns for the region have been unusual, Rob says, with above average sunshine and above average rainfall in April.

The weather may have been inclement but that did not stop our wonderful community entering into the creative spirit of The Great Blenheim Bake Off. The Cake Stall was laden with 50 kinds of baking and the Mother’s Day cakes for the auction were all a stunning feast to the eye. The Creative Kids Team wish to thank everyone who came and they are very grateful for the overwhelming generosity to the Trust. Marlborough Farmers’ Market,

Cinnamon House, BV Gourmet, Karen Dick, and Jane and Alannah Peoples generously contributed towards a great array of prizes; and Amelia Brown, aged 9 years old triumphed as Star Baker twice. The creativity expressed in all of the kids’ entries was astonishing, “Thank you so much for putting this together, Amelia had a lovely time. A great idea for our creative outlet!” Amelia’s mother Laura Grace commented. The Judging Tent was a popular

attraction with a charming crystal chandelier hung by Cinnamon House and admired by many, and with several visitors offering to step into the Judges’ shoes next year! Melissa from Sweet Creations NZ, Pedro from Pedro’s Empanadas and Shelley from Shelley May Cakery accomplished a sterling performance, tasting 40 pieces of baking each. Community fun and creativity was remarked upon. “I was in heaven, yum, I hope you do it again. What a Mother’s

Day Treat,” commented local parent Dawn Hughes. The Creative Kids Trust is already planning their next two community fundraisers. They’re inviting auditions this month for ‘Stars in Your Eyes’ and are hosting the movie premiere of Elton John’s ‘Rocketman’ on 30th May. The Trust is delighted with the community appreciation of ‘The Great Blenheim Bake Off’ - and they are keen to make it an annual event. Every baker was a star in their eyes!

Smart technology for the Sounds

Ageing Positively – Betty Foreman

Government funding is helping the Marlborough Sounds prepare for better technology connectivity, benefiting marine farmers, boaties, visitors and the environment. Chief Information Officer Stacey Young represented Council at the recent announcement in Nelson of Provincial Growth Funding (PGF) for five Top of the South projects, including ‘Smart Services’, which received $99,000 to develop a business case. “As the regulator of aquaculture, Council needs reliable data to make informed decisions about managing the Sounds’ sensitive environment,” Stacey says. “If we’re successful, sensors will be attached to all Sounds-based marine farms and other marine sites, with data shared to help with environmental management and marine farm monitoring.” “The Harbourmaster also wants better navigational data for ships, ferries and boaties, and improved surveillance and monitoring. DOC is supportive so it can better manage visitors in popular areas like the Queen Charlotte Track, and help run its conservation programmes.” Council has also contributed $150,000 to the project. Another application is expected

After marriage in 1947, Betty moved to the back country of mid-Canterbury. She enjoyed the peace and quiet, beautiful mountains and lakes, taking walks and horse riding. After a move to Parnassus, her two daughters were born. In 1957 the family shifted to Ward where they stayed for 18 years. Life got busy with school and fund raising; it was a lot of fun as well as hard work. Betty was asked to join the Country Women’s Institute, becoming its secretary and president. The Institute helped people when they were sick, with cleaning, cooking and looking after the children. Betty was made a life service member. After a move to Blenheim, she joined the women’s section of the RSA in 1983, working on poppy days as well as helping with rest home and hospital visits for its members. Betty has supported the Child Cancer Foundation

MP Mark Patterson and Stacey Young at the Smart Services’ launch to go to the PGF to fund the delivery of the technology. Council is looking for contributions for this from marine farmers and others who will benefit. It’s hoped to complete the initial business case and a request for proposal by June 2019. If overall funding is confirmed, the first marine farms, Harbourmaster and DOC sites could be operational by August 2020.

Annual Plan hearings Consultation on the Council’s 201920 Annual Plan closed last week. Well over a hundred submissions were received, covering a wide range of issues. Three-quarters of submitters said they would like to

speak at hearings with the Mayor and Councillors, from Tuesday 4 to Thursday 6 June. The hearings are open to everyone and will be held in the Council Chambers, 15 Seymour Street, Blenheim.

Marine Award field day Sister region visit A delegation of leaders from Marlborough’s sister region of Ningxia in China was here last week, to get to know more about our wine industry. The group was hosted at Cloudy Bay by Shen Yang, Estate Director and Chief Winemaker; they also visited the Wither Hills winery, NMIT and the Marlborough Research Centre.

Mayor John Leggett signed a sister-region understanding with the Governor of Ningxia in 2017. The Mayor says the relationship is helping Marlborough-based wine technology companies to export to China, and encouraging Chinese students to travel to Marlborough for education and training. Ningxia is the fifthlargest wine region in the world.

The Sun Phantom of the Opera I’ve just been to see the matinée of this astounding show. The performers put on a show as if it were opening night or the final. You have missed an experience if you didn’t go. Also good to see one of the chorus ladies, say to the leading lady for “curtain call” Well done. Money worth spent.

Steel vs lead! The PC mad drive to steel shot means waterfowl slightly hit slowly suffer a slow total internal decay, whereas lead is quite different needing a clear shot. Steel also ruins older valuable barrels for the unwary, AND dentists love steel shot, just destroys your tooth, I know, whereas lead is far softer! Lead can be reabsorbed with lime-steel rusts. Oops. Another knee jerk, time to put the logic cap on.

Best shop The Blue Door is the best shop in Blenheim Obviously they don’t accept certain items or things in bad repair and not able to be sold I’ve seen the drop off area overflowing day after day, and the shop is very full Well done to all the staff and volunteers excellent service.

Thanks Needed a plumber urgently at 6pm last week. Rang those in the yellow pages and only one answered mobile after hours number! Thanks Paul Gamble the only plumber who responded and was fantastic!

Easter hours To the person complaining “Blenheim was shut and we have bad attitude”... Everyone knows Easter is a biblical belief. A lot of people do get the privilege of the whole time off. Lucky you if you were one. Yes there was a few things on in Marlborough. But for just a couple of days maybe have some thought for those that believe and still had to work through. What’s wrong with a thermos of hot water and having a coffee wherever, or were you one that wanted to shop till you drop. Its not all about money, its a respect thing. By the way I did work over Easter. Suck it up butter cup.

Prices gone mad Mortified to hear my partner telling me that her dentist charged her in excess of $200 for a check up and clean. Maybe you should inform your clients of the extortionate pricing prior to making them feel bad on payment. She never even received a glass of champagne to say thanks for the custom.

Rattled Alzheimers, to the grader driver who drove his grader on the Awatere Valley road, would you please remember to put your blade down. It does make a difference. Drove down it on Sunday and had to pick my false teeth up off the floor.

Regards Seymour / Alfred Street . We are being told we should use indicators if following white centre line at this junction. Presume the same would apply at corner in Renwick where Old Renwick Rd runs off the main. Same situation!! What are the rules??

Wrecking alignment Be good to see Wairau River bridge at Tuamarina fixed as on the start of both ends you encounter a 75 mm drop off. Totally wrecking wheel alignment.

Smarten up! Royal Visit [3/5/19]. ‘Only blooper was Cindy who bolted out of the Royal NZ Air Force Plane ahead of our royal guest. Oops, comrade.’ Such crude language. Smarten up!

Lack of communication Fibre to the door with Vodafone in Blenheim, easy. NOT. Beware and be prepared to spend hours on the phone speaking to Vodafone in India. Unfortunately Chorus isn’t much help either. All about lack of communication.

In crisis Totally support teachers and how they are standing up for our kids and their education and how they are not valued in NZ. Seems there is money for everything except for fixing an education system that is in crisis.

Cannabis OMG kiwis, open your Cindyfied eyes, see the internal organ destruction, the criminal activity and suicides - some of us who are not trying for bloody votes, have. Its instant, horrendous and devastatingly true. Then watch vehicle insurance sky rocket! Your kids, their future and safety, are at risk and you are left to clean up the mess, for years for some. Reject anything but controlled, supervised medical application! Vote responsible!

Loud music Does anyone else wish workman didn’t play such loud music. Some people work at home, some are on night shift and some people are sick. Think about others before your self

Drug testing Alcohol problems People in Marlborough work hard producing and promoting alcohol. Drinking alcohol causes health issues, (for example depression, cancer, obesity) social issues (for example traffic accidents, domestic violence, anti-social behaviour) impacting on our quality of life. Is this what we want?

Re road toll. Until we have drug testing like Australia it will only get worse, but the politicians couldn’t care less.

Power credits I agree. Being a pensioner it is really appreciated. I say thanks also.

Drenched dog

Side of the road?

Out one night recently, and noticed a white 2 door flat deck truck. I noticed it because you had a dog tied up on the back. Being a lovely loyal animal it was left out in the rain for you to come back. So you were either having a few drinks or at the ASB. I’m not impressed with you. It was pissing down with rain. You don’t deserve to own a dog. Not fair on the animal. Selfish person. You are lucky I didn’t ring the authorities. Question I’m thinking, would you do this in the summer? I shake my head.

Re: Ridiculous, so where will you go next time you have a plastic laundry basket to dispose of? The side of the road?

So proud to have both HRH Prince William and our Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern to commemorate Anzac Day. It would be good to teach our young ones the basics of respect where due, this clearly being lost in the world of political commentary.

Betty’s bears will help the SPCA By Bill McElhinney Unique faces, furry bodies and a lot of love and care are needed to craft teddy bears, says Betty Williams. Betty, a former osteopath, makes her teddy bears using a variety of materials such as mohair, alpaca cashmere and lamb’s wool. No two are the same, and many of them contain a music box which plays a tune. Betty moved to Blenheim from Devon, England, with her husband, Norman, in 2007. But she started making

bears years before then, while nursing her ill mother. She wanted something to do, so she created a pattern and started making bears. “I think every child should have a teddy bear they can hug and cherish,” Betty says. Now a residing at Springlands Lifestyle Village, Betty has co-opted some helpers for her latest project, a miniature teddy bear orchestra. “Jane Kindell helped me make the bears and Allan Butland built the stage for them,” Betty says.

“And there’s a cupboard under the stage that contains the cases for each of the musical instruments the bears are holding.” Each little bear has an instrument, and Betty plans to complete the project by adding a little music box, which will play ‘The Teddy Bears Picnic.’ She is donating the bear orchestra to the local SPCA to raffle as a fundraiser. “Bears are animals, and it’s nice to aid an organisation that cares for animals,” Betty says.

Bowel cancer survivor keen to spread screening message By Bill McElhinney Blenheim woman Joan Vercoe is a bowel cancer survivor. “I was diagnosed three years ago,” Joan says. “There weren’t any apparent symptoms, I was just lacking in energy. “I went for a medical check-up and they discovered I was lacking in iron, so the doctor sent me to be further examined. “They discovered a lump in my colon, which turned out to be cancerous. “But I had a successful operation and they didn’t

find anything else. I have regular checks now, but I’m fine. It’s been a success story for me.” Now Joan, who is a member of the Blenheim Women’s Institute, is getting behind the bowel screening programme which was launched last year by the Nelson and Marlborough District Health Board. It is a free screening programme for people aged 60-74 years aimed at detecting and preventing early stages of bowel cancer. According to Bowel

LEFT: Bowel cancer survivor Joan Vercoe is keen for people to come and learn about the free bowel cancer screening programme that is coming to Marlborough.

Cancer New Zealand, Marlborough has the fourth-highest rate of bowel cancer nationwide. A contributing factor to this high rate of late diagnosis is that people tend not to talk about worrying symptoms, or put them down to a minor problem like haemorrhoids, and put off seeing a doctor. Claud ia Teu n issen, project manager for the national bowel screening project at Nelson Marlborough District Health is com ing to Blenheim on Monday

to explain the testing procedures and the aims of the programme. Joan and her Women’s Institute colleagues are keen to see the screening programme promoted and for the target group to hear what Claudia has to say about it. “Please come along, and bring your friends and neighbours,” Joan says. “Its 1.30pm on Monday at the Salvation Army Hall in Blenheim and we’ll be putting on a Devonshire tea as well, so don’t miss it!”

If it’s not urgent, call ‘ten five’ By Blenheim Community Constable Russ Smith Last year NZ Police celebrated 60 years of the 111 national Emergency Services number. On May 10 we added 105 (‘ten five’), a number for reporting non-emergencies to Police. This is the new way to let Police know about non-emergencies: Call 105 or go online to 105.police.govt.nz. Police Minister Stuart Nash said the new number would make it easier for New Zealanders to contact their Police when they needed to. We’re expecting the 105 number to help build trust and confidence in Police by giving the public a simple, new way to report situations that don’t require an urgent or immediate response from Police. • Call 105 if it’s happened already to report non-emergencies to Police

Russ Smith

• Go online to 105.police. govt.nz to report and get updates on certain types of non-emergency situations (currently lost property, intentional property damage, shoplifting, general theft and theft from a car) • If a crime is taking place or there’s a threat to life or property, it’s an emergency so call 111.

Dog show set to be the paw-fect event By Aimee O’Hagan This weekend, dogs from around New Zealand will flock to Omaka for the annual Marlborough Kennel Association’s Dog Show Championships. There will be 85 different breeds of dogs – approximately 370 dogs in total – attending the event, which will run from 8:30am until 4pm on Saturday, and from 8:30am until 1:30pm on Sunday. winner will get a trophy, there are “cash and sash” prizes for winners of different categories, lots of Eukanuba dog food, and more. “Last year’s show was very successful... SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Whitelock’s captaincy crusade Call it a calculated hunch but Sam Whitelock will be the next long-term All Blacks captain. The terrific Crusaders and All Blacks lock has signed a four year deal with the New Zealand Rugby Union that will see him in the black jersey until the 2023 World Cup. The 108-test veteran will be 31 in October. The thing that seems to make Whitelock a good tip to take over the top job from Kieran Read is

the length of that deal. In a day and age where the NZRU are struggling to keep players in their mid-to-late 20s, Whitelock has shown a long-term commitment to New Zealand rugby during his peak years of earning potential overseas. It would be hard to turn down millions of pounds, euro or yen, but what would be even tougher would be to captain the greatest rugby team on the planet. If he is named the next captain,

it would be an amazing turn of events over the past two years. While no one would question his drive and work-rate on the field, it wasn’t until he was named captain of the Crusaders in 2017 that fans noticed his leadership qualities. In the eyes of many he has leapfrogged the likes of Sam Cane, who while younger, has had injury issues and has struggled to have success leading his Super Rugby franchise, the Chiefs. With Cane yet to return from

a serious neck injury suffered last year, the durable Whitelock appears to have gained the inside running. Like Read, Richie McCaw and Tana Umaga before him, there is nothing but support for Whitelock. This won’t be a divisive choice and more of a passing of the torch, the kind that has continued this more than a decade of dominance of the international game by the men in black. Whitelock is a modern day player

willing to take tactical, calculated risks but also not afraid to roll up his sleeves and win a battle of grit in the close exchanges. He will face an easier time than Read did in terms of trying to create his own leadership legacy after the incomparable, McCaw and he’ll still have a strong core of experienced players and emerging talent to play alongside. Whitelock is the logical and most accomplished choice for the next four years.

Matt’s team still Blade runner’s lead table tennis message for farmers Former Paralympic blade runner Liam Malone hopes to inspire dairy farmers to stay strong and continue rising above the challenges facing the sector when he speaks at the South Island Dairy Event next month. Liam is among a line-up of diverse speakers for the two-day conference in Invercargill next month, which includes All Blacks mental skills coach Gilbert Enoka. Liam had both legs amputated below the knee when he was 18 months old, being born with a fibular hemimelia – in which part or all of the fibula bone is missing. He was 19 and at university when his mother died of cancer. He was suffering from anxiety and depression because he had two artificial legs, and was drinking a lot. Then one night, when he was driving drunk, he crashed his truck off a bank. “It was a turning point in my life,” Liam says. “I realised you can’t outrun your problems, you need to face them. I decided to take control of my life.” Just three years later he won two gold medals at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Liam likens the journey dairy farmers are on to that of a marathon, not a sprint. He says while the changes are coming fast, they are constant, and farmers need to be prepared to stay the distance.
