Sienna’s song By Aimee O’Hagan Blenheim eleven year-old, Sienna Wheeler, wants to ensure her voice is heard. Two Saturdays ago, Sienna took to Market Street to go busking. Her plan is to do so as often as she can. Sienna’s aim? Not to make a little bit of extra pocket money, but to feed Marlburians who are hungry. Holding a sign that read, “If you need food, take some. If you can give money, please give for people at need”, with a basket of food and a plastic bucket for donations at her feet, Sienna raised approximately $35.00. All the money she made – and will continue to make – is set to go towards buying food for locals in need. Continued on page 2. Sienna Wheeler (11) is raising money to help feed locals who are struggling to put food on the table.

How to reach us

Sienna sings to support struggling locals Continued from page 1. “I put the food out when I’m busking so people can take it if they need it,” Sienna says. The Bohally Intermediate School student came up with the idea when her classmates recently began talking about taking part in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine 2019, which is set to raise funds for children in Uganda. She believes there are people closer to home who need support, too.

“If we want to help people overseas, we should help people in our own community first,” Sienna says. “I just think that everybody should get food.” To kickstart the project, Sienna used $20.00 of her own money – which she had initially saved up to buy a watch – to purchase snacks, effectively filling up the basket for her first busking session. “I don’t need a watch as much as people need food!” She hopes to rally support

from local supermarkets, and perhaps start to offer clothing and products such as shampoo and conditioner. “If supermarkets help by donating food, I can give the money I raise to a charity,” Sienna says. To support Sienna or to find out more information, she can be contacted on 0210408649, or via email at siennaea@gmail.com. Operation Cover Up coordinator for Marlborough, Ruth Buckley (left), with husband Darrell.

By Aimee O’Hagan Approximately 30 Marlburians have turned knitting into their mission. They’re all taking part in ‘Operation Cover Up’: an initiative that focuses on knitting woollen garments for people who live in Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, and other less-privileged European countries, in order to stay warm in the blisteringly cold, winter conditions. Those who participate knit anything from blankets to beanies, to scarves and to socks. Marlborough coordinator, Ruth Buckley, says that Operation Cover Up has been going for an “amazing” 20 years. “We’re still doing it, we’re still with it, and it’s an ongoing thing,” she says. Every year, people from all over New Zealand get involved in the project.

“It’s done from the far north to the deep south,” Ruth’s husband, Darrell, says. Ruth says that those taking part have “never, ever run out of wool”. “People give wool or garments that we can unpick. “Some people buy their own.” All organisers have to pay for is getting the garments overseas. She adds that she is “very grateful for the community’s help and involvement” with Operation Cover Up. The colourful, woollen creations will be on display at St Christopher’s hall this Saturday, from 10am until 2:30pm, before they are sent to Europe in the days following. All garments can be dropped off from 12:30pm until 3pm on Friday. For more information, Ruth can be contacted on 03 578 3550.

Jan’s message; “Mammograms save lives”

By Celeste Alexander To meet Jan Judson, first impressions are that of a bubbly, happy woman who loves her family, her job and enjoys the little things in life. But behind all of that is a woman who puts on a brave face when speaking about her breast cancer journey. Jan is a breast cancer survivor and at a recent Pink Ribbon Breakfast hosted by her employer, Constellation Brands New Zealand, based at Drylands near Blenheim, she shared her experience with her colleagues in the hope it would inspire others to have regular mammograms. As guest speaker, Jan gave an emotional talk about her diagnosis and treatment which all took place within the past eight months. Jan, originally from Auckland, moved to Marlborough in April of last year and applied for the position of health and safety co-ordinator for Constellation Brands NZ. She had no history of breast cancer and no real cancer connection within her family, and she admits she wasn’t in a hurry to change her contact details with Breast Screening NZ. “I hadn’t even registered with a GP in those first few months. I had just moved, started a new job and hadn’t found a new doctor to give me the prod to register with the South Island section of Breast Screening NZ, so I hadn’t organised my mammogram,” she says. It was when Jan attended last year’s Pink Ribbon Breakfast hosted by the company that she heard former manager of the Marlborough Cancer Society, Margot Wilson, speak about breast cancer that prompted her into action. “I spoke with Margot afterwards and she gave me the number to call so I could change my details and book in for my mammogram,” Jan says. Three weeks after her mammogram,

Well known Renwick resident farewelled Well known Renwick woman, Val Alcorn, was farewelled last Friday after passing away peacefully on May 11. Val had featured in the Sun Newspaper on numerous occasions for her famous Christmas lights display at her Kowhai Drive address, and for her ‘Fun Seekers’ leisure marching team.

Burial costs set to rise Burial plot costs are set to increase throughout the region after the Marlborough District Council voted to adopt the Cemetery Fees Review proposed 50-50 funding split between ratepayer funding and user pays. The previous model saw a 70-30 funding split.

Jan received a call to say she needed further scans in Nelson. There she had another mammogram, followed by an ultrasound before being given her diagnosis – she had a small lump on her right breast. “The weird thing was that even after I knew there was a lump and where it was located, I still couldn’t feel it. There was no pain or discomfort either so it could have been so easy to put it

off or think nothing was wrong,” Jan says. Fortunately for Jan her breast cancer was caught in the very early stages and the lump was surgically removed, followed by 18 rounds of radiation therapy. “In July I will have a followup appointment and then a mammogram every year until the specialists are happy it hasn’t returned. I realise that I am so lucky which is why I urge all

women to make sure you have your mammograms. “Don’t put them off, don’t think you are an exception because there’s no history of it in your family… get in and get it done,” she says. The Pink Ribbon Breakfast hosted this month at Drylands raised $2715. The company hosts this event every year at its Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay and Auckland locations.

Court settles on fine for employee’s death Crafar Crouch Construction (Picton) has been ordered to pay a fine of $351,563 and reparations of $177,735 following a fatal incident in June 2017. Employee Shawn Bartlett was killed when the truck he was driving rolled down a bank in the Marlborough Sounds. A Worksafe investigation found numerous health and safety failings made by the company had led to his death.

Dog show a delightful day out By Aimee O’Hagan Marlborough Kennel Association held it’s annual Marlborough Dog Show Championships on Saturday and Sunday, and past president of the association, Lavina Diamanti, says that the event was very much a success. “There were a lot of public visiting, and a large number of the exhibitors had travelled down from the North Island for the show,” she says. Over 360 canines from around the country flocked to Omaka to show five judges – Johnathan Marshall, Shelley Marshall, John Palmer, Sue Tringham, and Annette Kay O’Carroll – what they’ve got. “The judges all enjoyed their stay here in Marlborough and each of the Best in Show judges chose a different dog for their top award,” Lavina says. “This is a reflection on the high quality of dogs competing at the show.” According to Lavina, there were some “unusual” breeds of dogs amongst the 86 types competing,

New Zealanders with an interest in the outdoors are being invited to have their say on legislation that helps them access nature throughout the country. The Ministry for Primary Industries is reviewing the Walking Access Act 2008 and today began calling for public feedback. Charlotte Denny, Director Environment and Communities Policy, says the Act provides New Zealanders and interna-

tional visitors with access to many outdoor spaces. This includes public access over land, bush, rivers, coasts, mountains and areas of cultural significance - in cities, towns and further afield. “The Act aims to provide free, certain, enduring and practical access to the outdoors for all sorts of activities, not just walking,” Ms Denny says. “The review is looking at whether the Act is fit for the

future, and what improvements are needed. “We’re keen to hear from individuals, organisations and groups with an interest in enjoying the outdoors. “This includes everything from walking and bike riding to swimming and fishing, connecting with Maori sites, outdoor education, hunting or even four-wheel driving.” Under the Act, a review must be undertaken after 10 years.

“The Act and the New Zealand Walking Access Commission have played a key role in many of the tracks, trails and areas that have been developed over the last decade.” Public meetings will be held in some areas. Details of the meetings will be shared on the website. More information about the review, including how to have your say, is available on www.mpi. govt.nz/walkingaccessreview

Historic Renwick church celebrations on Sunday By Bill McElhinney A special celebration will be held on Sunday in Marlborough’s oldest church. In the 1800s Renwicktown was a Presbyterian settlement and the first church of any denomination in the pioneer Wairau settlement was built in Renwick. It was thought at that time that ‘Renwicktown’ would be the centre of the Marlborough province. The little wooden Presbyterian

church, formerly called the Omaka Church, was mainly constructed from matai and rimu, pit-sawn at Grovetown’s ‘Big Bush.’ It was opened in 1859, with the service led by the Rev Thomas Dickson Nicholson, who had previously preached in the Awatere Valley after travelling by horseback from Nelson. The Rev. Nicholson and another pioneer settler, Dr Thomas Renwick, both advocated for

Marlborough’s separation from Nelson. In 1853, while a member of the Nelson Provincial Council, Dr Renwick, along with other Wairau settlers, pushed hard for the establishment of a separate province of Marlborough, which they achieved in 1859. In the meantime the Rev. Nicholson offered the use of the little Presbyterian church as a school room for Marlborough’s second

public school, Renwick School, which opened in 1861. The little church was used by the small Presbyterian congregation up until the 1990s, when they shifted into the adjacent building which is now the church hall. But the historic church has been carefully maintained and was used for Sunday School and occasionally as a prayer room. “It takes a lot of time, effort and money to maintain the church,”

Wairau Presbyterian Parish member Ruth Newman says. “But it is part of our history.” A special service to commemorate 160 years since the church first opened is being held at the historic venue, on the corner of Havelock and Nicholson Streets, Renwick, at 10am on Sunday, followed by morning tea in the hall next door. “Everyone is invited,” Ruth says. “Come and have a look inside.”

Vaughn loves horses and courses Blenheim’s Vaughn Cameron is a man of many talents when it comes to horses. He talks with Sun reporter Jacob Page about horse shoes, second chances, the perfect length of grass and why you’re never too old for some fatherly advice. Vaughn Cameron’s life-long love affair of horses has forced him to be adaptable to continue earning a living with the animals he loves. The 51-year-old farrier is also the track manager at Waterlea Raceway - a role he’s had since 2001. The home of Blenheim horse racing holds two harness meetings and one thoroughbred meet each year, which means he spends just as much time re-shoeing horses to keep the money rolling in. Professionally horse obsessed, he is also club captain of the Blenheim Polo Club and a former show jumper in his youth. Horses have been as much a way of life as they have been an income generator. “We did pony club and general riding when we were kids,” Vaughan says.

“So I got Cookie Time, who has turned into a lovely polo horse.” “Kids of Dad’s (Colin) time were riding horses to school and he was the local huntsman here and a keen polo player back in the day. “Back then, polo was largely a bunch of interested farmers with a couple of horses in the paddock who wanted to have a lash,” he says. “It’s far more professional now. “In an area like Blenheim it’s hard to find players these days and with the viticulture influence it can be hard to find a paddock to play on that hasn’t been turned into grapes.” As farrier work began to become more competitive in the early 2000s, Vaughn took on the role of Track Manager at Waterlea. “There were more farriers in town than there was work, so I took on the Track Managers job as a more secure income and I still shoe horses here when

I finish work at 3pm.” Vaughn’s skills were either self-taught or passed down from his family. “I always used to shoe my own horses growing up and my brother, Geoff, had the blacksmith shop at the racecourse, so I did my time there and eventually bought him out in 1997.” For those wondering, re-shoeing a horse can take up to an hour. Colin was the groundsman at Lansdowne Park for many years and is still a keen volunteer, with his son at Waterlea. “My father and I, for the past 25 years, have looked after the polo grounds and that was probably my biggest qualification for this job when I started. “When he was over there and I was here at Waterlea, we’d help each other out and he’s still a tremendous help now with the track. “The grass track component I’d describe as one massive lawn,” Vaughn says. “You’re keeping the clover out of it, you’re watering it, you’re fertilising it and you’re mowing it.” “It’s four hectares so it’s essentially a very large lawn.” Vaughn said preparations for the April gallops meeting can be tough if the region is hit by drought. “We’re often rescued by April rain, but in reality, the hard work has already been done by then,” he says. “I work on 80mm to 100mm of grass and a track with a significant amount of give for the Monday leading into the meeting. “The all-weather track is a daily thing, the grooming or maintenance, because of all the horses we have that train here. “We’re watering to prevent dust and the track conditioner is a god-send, but everything is weather-dependent. “There was a time when I had three former Track Managers popping in for a cup of tea because they’d retire but never really leave,” he says. “They were still passionate.” Vaughn has also helped with for former race horses who transition into polo horses. “I’ve one last year from the Kevin

Club captain of the Blenheim Polo Club Vaughn Cameron with horse Cookie Time.

Myers team called Cookie Time who had all but retired,” he says. “Kevin told his team that he’d give the horse a couple more runs at Blenheim and then give him to Vaughn - but no one told me. “Kevin walked by me and said ‘that’s your new horse on the end’ as he was born without a cover - basically saying he wanted the cover back. “So I got Cookie Time, who has turned into a lovely polo horse.” He says the transition to turning

a race horse into a polo horse can be challenging. “Polo is all about stopping and turning as opposed to racing,” he says. “So you canter 1000 circles in each direction trying to change their habit.” Vaughn says it’s immensely satisfying to offer horses a second life and a chance to learn a new skill when their options seem limited. “It gives the horse a chance and Kevin came back this year and

was thrilled the horse had turned out well.” Vaughn has sent eight or nine horses to the UK to become professional polo horses and his 24-year-old son, Brodie, competes over there. Vaughn’s proudest achievements in polo came when Blenheim won the Gould Cup as South Island champions in 2015. He then repeated the feat as a ring-in for South Canterbury 12 months later.

Camp fun at Mistletoe Bay Story and photos by Celeste Alexander Mistletoe Bay has been bustling with activity these past few weeks as Renwick School has been rolling through their Years 5-8 school camps. The school has been visiting the Mistletoe Bay camp site since 2009 where students enjoy a raft of outdoors and water based activities over

the course of a week. Nine classes go through on a weekly rotation from the end of term one through to term two. Reporter Celeste Alexander went along for a day trip last Thursday with one of the school’s junior classes who enjoyed visiting their buddy class. The morning was spent finding

interesting objects, followed by crab hunting and stomping around in the water. Speaking with the students on camp, there were many things they had enjoyed during their time there. Everything from kayaking, sailing and orienteering, through to beach and bush study and the very popular paddle boarding were a huge hit.

Students Holly Ross, Liam Isles, Luke Bryant and David Potts had all great things to say about their experiences. “I loved that the cabins had heatpumps so they were warm and comfortable, and what I enjoyed most were the paddle boarding, kayaking and orienteering,” Holly says. “It’s great fun when the water is

calm! The walks and the orienteering were my highlights,” Liam says. According to Luke he is looking forward to going back. “The cabins were larger than I thought and I’m hoping my family can go back for a holiday.” For David, it was an opportunity to catch his first fish. “I caught a spotty which was cool,” he says.

Safe sleep Don’t put your life in the hands of an old electric blanket. Any blanket older than five years should be checked by a qualified electrician or replaced. Until then, here are some good safety practice tips for electric bedding. Do not use warming bedding with infants or very small children, people with disabilities, anyone who is immobile or cannot operate the controls properly, anyone insensitive to heat or anyone who cannot understand these directions. Never run the control cords between the mattress and the box springs. (This advice is similar to the advice about never running an appliance or lamp cord under a rug.) The cord could become damaged by friction or the heat from the electricity in the cord could be

Do not allow pets to be around your warming bedding. A sharp claw or a tooth may puncture the wire insulation or damage the wiring itself. Do not use pins around warming bedding. They can puncture the heater wire insulation. Turn off the bedding appliance when not in use. Never iron your electric blanket or electric mattress pad. Ironing may melt the heating wire insulation. Never dry clean or use cleaning fluid on your product. Dry cleaning solvents may damage the heater wire insulation. Finally if you observe your electric blanket or electric mattress pad operating unusually or improperly (e.g. seems too hot in one area or you see a scorch mark) call the manufacturer and stop using it right away.

Chances are that most homes around Marlborough which rely on woodburners, already have their firewood seasoned, stacked and ready to burn. But if you have found yourself caught out and on the lookout for firewood to burn this winter, be aware that you will need dry wood, and not wet or ‘green’. Generally most firewood merchants sell dry firewood, but if it has recently been cut you will need to stack it to dry it out. When firewood is not dried properly, many problems arise including more smoke which affects air quality, blocked chimneys which create a fire

trapped there with no place to escape eventually becoming a fire hazard. Never pinch any of the heating wires or the control cords in any way. Therefore do not use automatic bedding with adjustable beds, pull-out sofas, or reclining chairs where any electrical cords or heater wires could become pinched in the mechanisms. Do not use a heated blanket and a heated mattress pad at the same time. Overheating could result. Wrapping the cord around the controls may damage the cord. Loop loosely when storing. The heated area of any warming bedding should always lie flat. That is, it should never be bunched up, folded or balled up (e.g. between the mattress and the footboard) such that the heat generated in the middle of that ball has no place to escape.

hazard and of course inefficient heating. Most importantly though, wet wood is hard to light and keep lit, so try to source dry wood if it’s for this year’s winter. Tips for drying wood It’s best to cut your firewood trees at least a year in advance. If you are trying to burn wood four months after cutting it, you’re being a little unrealistic. A good rule of thumb is to always be a year ahead. If you can’t be a full year ahead, you should at least cut your trees in the spring or early summer to give them a good six to eight months to season. Process the wood as soon

as possible Cut the wood into firewood lengths and split it as soon as possible. This will accelerate the drying process significantly. As soon as the wood is processed, it is important to stack it to ensure that it dries in a timely manner. Allow air circulation and sunlight to reach the firewood. Covering your firewood with a tarp is not the best idea when trying to season firewood. Let the sun shine down and the air circulate around the firewood. The best way to do this is to stack the firewood in an area where the sun will shine.

Smoke alarms save lives When you’re asleep, you lose your sense of smell. Don’t assume your smoke alarms are working. Press the button to check. When you are buying smoke alarms, Fire and Emergency NZ recommends hard-wired and interconnected smoke alarms are installed.

If your alarms cannot be hard-wired, it’s recommend to use long-life photoelectric smoke alarms that rely on 10-year lithium batteries. Inbuilt 10-year lithium batteries last as long as the smoke alarm so you don’t need to worry about replacing them every year – you

simply replace the entire smoke alarm unit once every 10 years. There are several specialised smoke alarms available for people who are deaf or hearing impaired. Find out more here. Smoke alarms for deaf and hearing-impaired people

There are a number of specialised smoke alarm systems available for people who are deaf or have hearing impairment. These alarms have extra features such as extra loud and/or lower pitch alarm sounds, flashing strobe lights, or vibrating devices. Ideally, you will have hardwired, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms fitted with bed-shakers, strobe lights, pagers or a combination of these. However, this may be too expensive. Some have both types of sensor (“dual” models). Ionisation smoke alarms are typically more effective at detecting fast flaming fires, which burn and spread quickly. Photoelectric smoke alarms are typically more effective at detecting slow smouldering fires, which burn for hours before bursting into flame. Unsure which type you have? radioactive material to make them work. You can identify one by the radiation symbol found on the plastic body. How many do I need? Smoke alarms cannot detect smoke through a closed door. Therefore, install a smoke alarm in every bedroom, hallway and living area. Please note: The New Zealand Building Code requires an approved smoke alarm to be fitted in every escape route (hallway) and within three metres of every sleeping space (bedroom) door. Brothers and business partners, Jugal Kishore and Sonu Karwal work tirelessly juggling a number of ventures, but one they are really proud of is TNDC. “It’s the combination of location, our wonderful food and staff that makes us really proud,” Jugal says.

The establishment first began with its inventive take on traditional Indian cuisine and a number of Western dishes. With feedback on their menu they have decided to introduce an Indian-only menu for winter evening dining. “We have a few exciting new plans on the cards so watch this space,” Jugal says. Until then, customers can rest assured that their favour-

Hands-on experience for biology students

Sunset magic

Blenheim resident Tom Miller captured these beautiful images of a dramatic sunset on Saturday evening. The photos were taken from St Leonards Road looking towards Mt Riley. The full moon image was taken looking towards the Wither Hills.

Year 13 biology students from Queen Charlotte College are finding out about the science that lies behind our successful aquaculture industry. Students swapped the classroom for lab coats and gumboots at Cawthron Institute’s Aquaculture Park in Nelson recently to participate in two days of laboratory-based workshops guided by specialist educators from Cawthron and the University of Otago. The annual science workshops are delivered by Cawthron Institute in collaboration with NMIT, SpatNZ and University of Otago, and are designed to give students access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities to carry out experiments with mussels. Alice McCullough, who took part in the very first workshops eight years ago, says they were a major influence on what she is doing now. “The workshops were the first time I really got to think for myself in a real-world laboratory environment,” Alice says. “I had to use my knowledge and apply it to a real problem. The experience was cool and I liked the idea of doing my own research.” Since leaving school, Alice has completed a Bachelor of Science and a Graduate Diploma in Marine Science and will shortly start her Masters degree, where she will study sponges. Alice was also one of Cawthron’s summer scholars and spent ten weeks looking at the use of algae as feed in the aquaculture industry.

NZ Marine Studies Centre University of Otago Educator, Richard de Hamel, says students lead their own experiments and for many it’s the first time that they are faced with the chal-

lenge of overcoming science challenges. “We provide students with an experience in the laboratory like those they will experience in the real world of science.

The playground equipment from Pollard Park is being ‘upcycled’ for this site, with other play pieces to be added, reflecting a farm-style theme. mid-June. Deputy Mayor Terry Sloan, chair of the assets and services committee, says he is really pleased to see the progress. “Marlborough has an enviable range of parks, reserves and places to go for recreation. These new facilities will bring great enjoyment to our children and grandchildren, and provide a place for parents to relax.”

Success for local floral artists By Bill McElhinney Two Marlborough floral artists have taken top honours in the New Zealand floral art Designer of the Year competition, held recently in Palmerston North. Well-known Blenheim floral artist Barb Higgins won the Floral Art Designer of the Year award and Helen Jackson won second place in her section with her petite entry, ‘Romance,’ “The theme of the exhibition was Te Manawa, The Heart,” Helen says. Over 130 floral art designs were created by floral artists from around

the country, with the highlight the designs created for the prestigious NZ National Designer of the Year. To be eligible to enter this competition, each designer had to win the competition in their area. The top designers in New Zealand competed for this award, which Barb won. There were six other competitive sections made up of a variety of designs and styles, from small petite designs with the title of ‘Romance’, to large designs staged from the floor with unlimited height.

Helen Jackson was delighted with her second place award for her petite design entitled 'Romance.'
