FLU FRIGHT!

By Bill McElhinney Hearing their little girl cry out in pain was a nightmare for Blenheim parents Hayden and Shelley Cole. Their five-year-old daughter, Nevaeh, had to spend four days in Wairau Hospital after contracting flu virus type A, which can often have severe

outcomes for the young and the elderly. “Nevaeh had just started school – she’d only been there a month,” Shelley says. “On Saturday a week ago she became lethargic and stopped eating. Then she started coughing, and said it hurt. Continued on page 2.

Little Nevaeh Cole is glad to be home with her family, Shelley and Hayden and little brother Jackson, after being hospitalised with a bad dose of the flu.

Continued from page 1. “Then on Sunday she began to complain of a sore throat and a bad headache. “I checked her temperature, and she was burning up. It was 39, so we took her straight up to hospital. “They gave her a lemon iceblock to try to cool her down, but she was so ill she couldn’t eat it, and her temperature was now 41.” Nevaeh was admitted to Wairau and put in isolation on an IV drip. A swab was taken on Monday which confirmed she had influenza A. “It’s the worst type, we were told,” Shelley says. “The fear is with kids it can turn to pneumonia, and you could even die from it. “Nevaeh also had vomiting and diarrhoea, so she was really dehydrated. She was so weak she couldn’t even walk.” Nevaeh was released from hospital late on the Wednesday afternoon and her parents took her home. “She perked up a bit during the day,” Shelley says, “but things got worse at night. “She was crying, and saying: ‘My

head hurts!’” “It was a nightmare,” says Hayden. “We were so worried that she might stop breathing. And you feel so helpless.” Nevaeh was re-admitted to hospital on the Thursday and put back on the IV, eventually returning home on Friday, where she is still recovering. Her flu affected the whole family. “I had to stay home from work, wear a mask, and stay away from other people,” Shelley says. “And Hayden took a couple of days off work to look after our two-year-old son, Jackson.” Shelley and Hayden had both had flu vaccinations, but their children had not. “We hadn’t even thought about getting the kids vaccinated,” Hayden says, “but we will now.” “We give our kids vitamin C and keep them warm, but the flu still hit hard,” Shelley says. “And the staff at Wairau told us there had been three other kids admitted after Nevaeh. They said it’s hit early this year.” Their advice: get a flu shot, and if you’re not well, stay at home so you don’t infect others.

Flu hitting hard and fast By Bill McElhinney Eleven people have been admitted to Wairau Hospital with the flu this month, including three children and one pregnant woman . At Nelson Hospital, 16 flu victims have been admitted since April. “If you haven’t had your free flu vaccination, now is the time to do so – and urgently – as the flu season starts to hit the community hard and fast,” Wairau Hospital clinical nurse specialist, Iona Bichan, says. The recent admissions are “the

100% LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED IN MARLBOROUGH

tip of the iceberg,” Iona says. “As well as people being admitted to hospital with influenza, there are those who come in every day to ED to be treated for flu symptoms and discharged. “The fact that the numbers of people who are sick enough to have to be in hospital is so high is strongly indicative of widespread flu in the community. There will be many people seeking help from their GP or pharmacist and many more caring for themselves or their family members at home without needing medical attention,” Iona says.

“The latest data for flu-like illnesses in the South Island shows that the Nelson Marlborough region is tracking much higher than the South Island average. It is also much higher than we typically see at this time of year,” Medical Officer of Health, Dr Andrew Lindsay, says. He asks people to consider the fact that they may have the flu without knowing it. “Around one in four New Zealanders are infected with influenza each year, some of whom will not feel sick at all but who will still pass it onto others who

then may become very ill. “By immunising against influenza you can lessen the chance of bringing it home to a baby, older relative or someone with a medical condition who could develop serious complications from influenza.” Vaccination is free for: pregnant women; people aged 65 or older; people with an ongoing medical condition like asthma, diabetes or a heart or lung condition; children aged four years or under who have been hospitalised for respiratory illness or have a history of significant respiratory illness.

Firefighters take on stair challenge

Nearly $50,000 has been raised by local firefighters who took part in the Sky Tower Stair Challenge last Saturday. Teams from Blenheim, Rural Rangi, Renwick and Seddon raced up 51 flights of stairs to raise money for Leakaemia and Blood Cancer NZ. Renwick volunteer firefighter Lucan Orchard placed 17th overall, the fastest time of the local participants.

Kids probe online pitfalls By Bill McElhinney “It’s the dopamine; it affects your brain and you get addicted!” Year 8 students at Bohally Intermediate have been studying social media and its effects on young people, and have come up with some challenging results. “We wanted the youngsters to study the cause and effects of social media,” Year 8 teacher Phill Johnson says. “So we set up a nine-week programme with a number of exercises to discover the effects social media was having on youngsters and their emotional and physical well-being.” “We discovered that people get addicted to social media because it releases the brain chemical dopamine,” Viola Minghetti says. “It travels to the pre-frontal cortex of your brain and you get a good

reaction, so you just want to keep doing it.” Dopamine is a neurochemical created in various parts of the brain and is critical in many brain functions, including thinking, moving, sleeping, mood, attention, motivation, seeking and reward. Dopamine causes you to want, desire, seek out and search. It increases your general level of arousal and your goal-directed behaviour With the internet, twitter, and texting, instant gratification of your desire to seek is available at the click of a button, giving users a false sense of fulfilment “Staying on social media also makes you tired and grumpy,” Walter Wickham says. “You can tell the kids that have been up late using social media

because of the way they are next day at school.” Phill agrees, and also points out those youngsters who are addicted to social media lack normal communication skills. “They can’t interact properly with other kids because they’re used to interacting only through their devices. It affects their social skills and their emotional wellbeing.” School community police officer Josh Reidie also came in to talk to the youngsters about using social media responsibly. “The kids have lots of technical skills, but they don’t have the life experience to deal with many situations that may arise,” Josh says. They also learned that every time you use social media, you leave a digital footprint, which could be accessed by others.

“So the first piece of advice is: Before you post anything online, stop and think about the consequences,” Josh says. However, the youngsters also explored the positive aspects of social media. “It can help you keep in touch with family members who live elsewhere,” Melody Johnston says. “You can find out about sports events, and there are things like fitness pages which can be really useful and motivating.” The youngsters also learned about the safety organisation, Netsafe, and to talk to police or a trustworthy adult if they came across cyber bullying or anything else they thought wasn’t right. So what about time on online? “No more than an hour at a time,” the youngsters say.

Local woman Heather Stenhouse has been inducted into the Basketball New Zealand Hall of Fame at an awards evening last Saturday in Wellington. Heather was acknowledged for her length of time playing rep basketball, leadership qualities on NZ touring teams and her consistent superb play.

Dancers return with trophy haul By Celeste Alexander A group of eight local dancers have returned from the Gold Coast with an impressive trophy haul after competing in Australia’s biggest dance competition. The Australian Dance Cup took place from May 9-12 and brought together all street, Latin and hip hop dance styles. Dancers from Studio HQ, located in Grovetown, competed in most of the categories and managed to win an impressive number of gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as taking out top placings. This is an incredible feat for the group, aged from 10-18 years, Studio HQ director Vicki Bendell says. “All of the girls performed to a high standard and placed very well. I’m very proud of them,” she says. The group consisted of sisters Sophia, Lucy and Amber Bendell, Ajah-Lee Ivamy, Claire Bowers, Paige Somerville, Eden Somerville and Rose Church. The group was also coached by Sophia and Lucy, and choregraphers Elli Torres (Brisbane, Australia), Hana Morris (Nelson) and Sophia worked with the dancers to perfect their routines over four months leading up to the competition. Another gold for Scott Construction By Celeste Alexander Scott Construction Marlborough has once again won gold at a national commercial project awards, but this time for the construction of the new Picton Library and Service Centre. The announcement was made at the Registered Master Builders 2019 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards evening recently where Scott Construction manager John Tovey (pictured right) accepted the award. The company won gold in the national category of ‘Civic’ for the project, with judges commenting on the attention to detail. According to John, the judges “were particularly impressed by the collaborative and inclusive ap-

proach adopted by the project team. “Our team are very pleased with the recognition. It was an exciting project build in the period immediately following the Kaikoura earthquake which presented unexpected and ongoing challenges,” John says. One of the judges’ comments was; “The craftsmanship and skill shown in the complex ceiling junctions, internal timber panelling, and bespoke furniture construction is second to none.” This is Scott Construction Marlborough’s third big win at these awards, after winning silver last year for the Chateau Marlborough expansion and gold in 2017 for the Cloudy Bay Vineyard’s Pinot Noir Cellar. Awatere Community Memorial Hall gets revamp

Playground triple dip win for Marlborough

Seddon’s Awatere Community Memorial Hall had been looking a bit worse for wear, having served the Awatere East Coast community well for nearly 40 years. However, successive earthquakes in 2013 and 2016 saw areas of the hall closed off for use, and it failed to meet the building code required of a modern public building. Its new renovation has come about after extensive community consultation, facilitated by the Council. $3M was budgeted to upgrade the hall so it can once again become a multi-use community hub, fit-for-purpose and available for all community groups. Councillor Cynthia Brooks has long championed the hall’s revival. “It was a thrill to be able to see the building work now nearing completion. Kudos to the locals who led the consultation and design process, and to Council staff who employed the architects and have supervised the build,” she says. “A lot of heart has gone into many new features and it shows. Scott Construction’s Duncan Gardiner has gone the extra mile to produce a quality result. I was blown away by the extra spaces created both indoors and out and how functional the building will be for all to use and enjoy.” “It is now in the hands of the local community to plan and fund the fit-out and I wish them well in this endeavour.” The build is expected to be completed by July and an official opening will be planned when the fit-out is finished.

Three new playgrounds are under construction, reflecting the Council’s commitment to improved facilities for children. Pollard Park’s new ‘acorn’ playground foundation pads have been laid and the first supports and pods have been installed. The acorn-style pods are suspended off supports connected by mesh tunnels. Exit points feature a rope ladder or a slide. An in-ground trampoline, musical equipment and extra seating are also being installed. Children from aged five and over will be able to use the new equipment, with completion only a month away. Deputy Mayor Terry Sloan, Chair of the Assets and Services Committee, said he

Speed limit bylaw review coming The Council will review speed limits on local roads across the region in a two-stage process in 2019 and 2020, through its local roads agency, Marlborough Roads. Mayor John Leggett said each year we receive public submissions asking for a particular road’s speed to be lowered. Marlborough Roads had intended to undertake the local roads and state highways review together next year, but the Council asked them to bring the local roads review forward.” “We are delighted that they have come up with this plan to do so earlier.” “There will be two stages of public consultation. The first will be later this year and will gather the public’s views on road safety issues and speed limits, which will inform the writing of a draft speed bylaw that goes to the Council for adoption in late 2019.” “Then the formal speed bylaw will be consulted on in early 2020, before a

final recommendation is presented to Council.” It had been hoped that a review could have been undertaken earlier, but the impact of the Kaikoura earthquake in 2016 had caused delays and stretched resources. The Council will receive a subsidy from the New Zealand Transport Agency to fund the review, which will cover the cost of specialist contractors for GIS analysis, project management and community engagement.

The Sun Thank you Blenheim First time visitor to Blenheim here. Had an excellent and restful sleep, under the worrying but soothing absence of moonlight. Thank you Blenheim.

Eyesore and hazard To the couple in their 40’s driving a black terrano (or similar type vehicle) would you mind returning to pick up your dilapidated trailer that you felt the need to dump down the end of Leitrim St please. It is both an eyesore and a hazard. I would be happy to help to contribute to your dump fees as my rates will now anyway. I just hope you haven’t got kids and are teaching the next generation that this is an ok thing to do. It’s not.

Shout out and big thanks

You are amazing To the fantastic couple in the blue ute that helped us when our dog was being attacked on the corner of Dobson and Grove Rd. You are amazing, thanks so much.

Beautiful A huge thanks to Marion at Picton 4 Square, for getting confused. Instead of giving me tickets for Saturday and Wednesday lotto I got 2 weeks of Saturday. I won several small prizes on the last Saturday ticket which I wouldn’t have collected had I got the correct(?) Wednesday ticket. Now that’s Karma. Beautiful.

Wanna say big thanks to the St John Ambulance team that responded to their 111 call to me and the fall I had on Sunday the 12th of May. Very quick and supportive team that got me to the Hospital ASAP. Also big thanks to the team at Wairau Hospital. Shout out to the Team at NZP and CP, very supportive and caring. Hunting comp entries still open

Children at Little Footsteps Scott Street were treated to a reading on Wednesday morning by a local illustrator. Pictured are Georgia Banks, Maria Jenner and Joy Kidd with teacher Louella Perkin and artist Caroline della Porta.

Illustrator reads to children By Celeste Alexander Hot water bottle…check! Warm blanket…check! The children at Little Footsteps Scott Street now know what to do if they were to find a kiwi egg, thanks to a special reading last week of the children’s book ‘Whisker the Kiwi Chick’. The book was written by New Zealand author Narine Groome and illustrated by local woman Caroline della Porta. It was Caroline who was invited to

the early learning centre to read to the children and share her illustrations which she says was the first time with that age group. “As an illustrator, seeing children at this young age relate to the book and hearing how they see things differently, for me it’s brilliant,” she says. Teachers at Little Footsteps Scott Street have been focusing on art this term so inviting Caroline to read the book and do some art with them afterwards has been “really cool”, teacher Louella Perkin says.

By Celeste Alexander It’s that time of year again where families don their hunting gear and head out to their favourite hunting spots for the Woody’s Pig & Deer Hunt, set for Queen’s Birthday Weekend. This competition, held by the Woodbourne Tavern & Motels, is a hugely popular event which draws in entries from all over, including the deep South. Woodbourne Tavern & Motels manager Rowan Ingpen says this year the entries have been coming in a lot earlier than previous competitions, and the numbers are “looking really good”. “We might even get higher numbers this year,” Rowan says. The categories for the hunt include an Open with average weight, heaviest pig and heaviest deer. There is a Teens section (10-17) with average weight, heaviest pig and heaviest goat, and a kids section (9 and under) with their hares, rabbits and possums. New this year is a Teams section which must consist

of three people, one from each of the categories and three animals. Following on from last year, the Luke Dixon Memorial Trophy will again be up for grabs in the Open and Teen categories. It was introduced last year in honour of Luke Dixon who tragically passed away two years ago. If you are wondering what prizes are up for grabs, you won’t be disappointed, Rowan says. “We have put up even more cash this year as well as hunting clothing and gear. Plus the kids get a goodie bag each so it’s a great event for the whole family,” he says. Spot prizes will also be given out at the prize giving which takes place on Sunday at 3.30pm. The public is welcome to go along to the weigh in event on Sunday from 1-3pm and have a look around. Entries for the Woody Pig & Deer Hunt close next Thursday at 8pm, and forms are available online, at the Woodbourne Tavern and at Hunting & Fishing Marlborough.

Authentic Chinese cuisine

Yun He and Huizhen Xiao will soon be opening the doors to their brand new Chinese Restaurant, Four Seasons-Shanghai.

Blenheim couple Yun He and Huizhen Xiao arrived in New Zealand from Shanghai 12 years ago and immediately fell in love with the Marlborough region and all it has to offer. But over the past 10 years they have found themselves missing true authentic Chinese food. This has inspired the couple to open their own restaurant, Four Seasons-Shanghai, which will be located on the road side of the new Redwood Hub building. Both Yun and Huizhen are busy adding their final touches to the restaurant

7

which will feature traditional cultural elements including lanterns, Beijing opera masks and Chinese paintings. “These elements convey the meaning of happiness, prosperity and fortune and are a big part of our culture,” Yun says. “The décor compliments the traditional Chinese food which is authentic in flavour.” Their two chefs also hail from Shanghai and Xi’an, the most ancient city in China where the Terracotta Warriors are found, Yun says. “The dishes they have created will comprise of the

sweet tastes of Southern China and the spicy tastes of Northern China. “Our chefs have improved our sauces to fit the local tastes while keeping the authenticity of the flavours. Together they will bring a fresh and amazing experience to our customers,” he says. Four Seaons-Shanghai will open its doors for the first time on Saturday, June 1. There it will be serving lunch from 11.30am – 2pm and dinner from 5pm. The restaurant is open seven days a week for dining or takeaway.

Kids raise funds for SPCA By Aimee O’Hagan The year three and four students at Renwick School have been as busy as bees for the last ten weeks, designing and building pet homes to raise money for the SPCA Renwick Centre. From rabbit hutches to kitten treehouses; from bird houses to guinea pig enclosures; and from aquariums to dog kennels – the children constructed all sorts of colourful

creations. A select number of the 40 pet homes were sold at a live auction, and the rest were sold at a silent auction. The total amount the pupils made was $1300. In regards to how the project came to be, Renwick School teacher, Michelle MacGibbon, says, “We let the kids brainstorm all the things they wanted to learn about. “They loved animals so we were

like, ‘What can we do with animals and what part of the curriculum would that fit into?’ “We thought technology was a good way to start the year, with lots of building involved.” Staff found that raising money for a local organisation was a “worthwhile way” for students to get thoroughly engaged in their schoolwork. “It gave the topic some real authenticity and a purpose to work hard and

do their best,” Michelle adds. Not only this, but the project also gave the students an opportunity to practise their maths (measurement), writing (advertising the products), and reading skills (research), all at once! When it came to building the homes, the children were predominantly encouraged to use recycled materials. “The chicken coop was made out of

a table and the guinea pig enclosure was made out of a cubby shelf we had in the class that wasn’t being used,” Michelle says of the most innovative creations. “The materials have come in thick and fast.” According to Michelle, there has been a “really nice connection” made with whanau members, as many came in to help the kids build the final products.

Mavis Wraight, Eliza Kirsten-Brown, Bella Williams, Brooklyn Smidt-Robinson, Fern Russell, and Laila Balasaglou not only made a tree house for a kitten, but two bird houses as well!

Olivia Curtis-Gill (back), Annabele Rea (left), Sophie Murchison, and Amy Theobold made a radiant, rainbow, rabbit hutch. A bid of $60 was placed on this rabbit hutch before the auction even began.

Bella Shaskey, Maia Brown, and Elizabeth Ross made a fish aquarium.

Lily Cody, Ayla Tasker, Lola Barnett, and Milly Barnett made a Connie Minehan and Peggy Hore with their bright, blue rabbit hutch, complete with fairy lights. According "camouflage" bird house, which is made out to Michelle, their pet home got the highest bid - well over $100! of plywood.

Radiator Services The best place to take a leak! When it comes to radiators and cooling systems, the team at Radiator Services can handle any job, big or small. Located on Main Street, Radiator Services is owned by Tony Flood and has been servicing the community for over 30 years. What makes Radiator Services the obvious choice is the decades of knowledge, expert advice and personal guarantee on every service. “By dealing with a locally operated business, you will get the right advice on what you need. Don’t take the chance on purchasing parts online as they may be wrong, costing you more in the long run,” he says. It’s not only radiators that the team specialises in, but also cooling systems and associated parts and accessories. This time of year in particular, Tony says is a good time to have your radiator fluids checked. “A well maintained and properly functioning cooling system is crucial to the overall health of the engine,” he says. “The coolant/antifreeze in a vehicle’s cooling system helps to prevent the engine from overheating, and prevents the engine from freezing when temperatures drop in winter. “Vehicle manufacturers recommend having a coolant flush from time to time to

Come and see Mark for: • Batteries • Servicing requirements • Budget priced tyres As the engine in a vehicle does its job, it heats up. The engine needs to be kept at a certain temperature so that it can function efficiently. This is where an engine cooling system comes into play. The radiator is a major component in an engine cooling system. This image illustrates

the various parts of an engine cooling system. If any part of the engine cooling system is broken, blocked or damaged, it will not work properly. The excess heat will not be dissipated and the engine's temperature will rise to a point where mechanical damage can occur.

This is commonly known as overheating. Modern vehicles are equipped with a liquid-based cooling system that extracts the excess heat by circulating coolant (i.e. anti-freeze) through the engine. Call in and see the team at Radiator Services Marlborough.

GARDENING THIS WEEK

Getting the soil pH right: By Wally Richards Every so often I will have a gardener phone and tell me that his pH is too high or too low and what can they do about it? My first question is: how do you know? They will then say: I brought this pH meter and then I went around measuring the pH in my gardens. Shock, horror the pH is well out of satisfactory growing range. If that was the case, all the gardens should be looking pretty sick or dead. Of course that is not the situation at all. The plants are generally quiet well and happy and it is only the gardener thinking the soil pH is all to hell. The gardener has wasted money buying a pH meter that gives false readings. If you want a metre that accurately measures the acidity or alkalinity of your soil, water or spa pool, then you need to buy a unit that can be calibrated with the aid of Buffer Solutions. The pH readings taken at any time are affected by temperature, so you need to calibrate the meter prior to every reading. This is done by placing the probe(s) into a solution that has a known pH and

adjusting the dial to that setting. There are two Buffer Solutions commonly used, pH 4 and pH 10. It is even better to have a third solution with a pH of 7. The price of this meter will range from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand, which is a bit too expensive for most gardeners. If you are concerned about pH, then the first thing to realise is most New Zealand soils tend to be a little on the acid side, unless you are in limestone country. Over time the soils tend to become more acid and that is why a regular amount of soft lime is applied to vegetable gardens and to areas where alkaline loving plants are growing. If you continually apply man-made fertilisers you will be increasing the acidity of the soil, and this will affect a number of plants. In some cases nothing grows, no matter how much fertiliser is applied. A simple test can be done using litmus paper, which is readily available in kits from places that sell spas and swimming pools. You also need distilled water, which is pH neutral. Take a small sample of soil and place in a clean glass

jar that has a lid. Add the distilled water to the jar, covering the soil. Then shake the contents for several minutes. Then place your litmus paper into the jar and compare the colour it turns too with the colour chart supplied. Now you have a good indication as to what your pH is in the spot where the sample was taken. Remember that certain factors may have an influence on that spot, such as concrete nearby, past history and drainage. So you need to repeat the same test with fresh samples in other parts of your gardens. For the home gardener an easy test can be done in the vegetable garden by planting two short rows of peas about 30cm apart. On one row sprinkle a soft lime, but none on the other row. If the peas in the lime row grow better then you need to lime those areas where alkaline loving vegetables grow. (Not where potatoes and tomatoes are going to grow) I keep saying soft lime and there is a good reason for this. Soft Lime is readily available to plants and the soil and if you wet your finger and rub some lime between the

fingers, soft lime will make a soft slurry. Hard lime, coming from limestone, will be gritty. Hard lime can take up to 10 years to become available to plants. If you have a area which is alkaline, or you want to grow acid loving plants, then dissolve say about 50 to 100 grams of sulphate of iron in water then add to about 5 litres of water in a watering can and apply this over the area. If you find your potatoes have potato scab then the above will assist in reducing that problem. The correct pH for plants allows better absorption of elements making for better growth and health. Plants, like us, need calcium in their diet for their good health. The symptoms of calcium deficiency are: necrosis at the tips and margins of young leaves, bulb and fruit abnormalities, deformation of affected leaves, highly branched, short, brown root systems, A common misconception is that if the pH is high, adequate calcium is present. This is not always true. Problems ring me at 0800 466464

Kids get crafting By Aimee O’Hagan Over the last four weeks, toddlers at various kindergartens and playcentres around Marlborough have been lucky enough to enjoy the company of Mills Bay Mussels representatives, Rachel Roberts and Natty Pickering. The two visited a different playcentre every Wednesday – including Springlands Kindergarten and Picton Preschool – specifically to hold a “Crafting Fun

Using various, reusable materials (napkins, beads, string, paint, and, of course, mussel shells) to make necklaces, Rachel and Natty hoped to “get creative with the kids and expand their minds with crafting fun”. “We want to show the kids that you can reuse anything,” Rachel says. “Especially to make awesome crafting fun. “The reason why we did it

is because we’re getting into kindies and schools, trying to be part of the community.” She adds that they have had really good feedback – all of the kids really enjoyed the workshops. According to Rachel, the team at Mills Bay Mussels hope to approach primary schools in term four of 2019 and term one of 2020. The aim is to teach older kids about fertilisation using crushed mussel shells and lime.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Juniors know the score With provincial rugby unions in New Zealand removing junior representative age-group teams before the age of 16, it could set an alarming new trend. Canterbury was the latest in a number of unions to stop representative honours for any team below the under-16 grade earlier this week as a shift from competition to participation continues to sweep through New Zealand sport. I don’t believe I would have coped as a child in this environment. I played any and all sports as a kid growing up in this mindset.

I was a child of no talent but plenty of desire to contribute to my team whether it was rugby, soccer, cricket, lawn bowls or indoor cricket. By the age of eight, I was captaining my under-9 school rugby team, largely because I was the loudest and most opinionated. Trust me, kids know when they are good at something and they know when they are winning. Yes, we all played for the love of the game but we also played to win and I question if this move, which has merits as a stand-alone idea, may start us on the slippery slope

of mass participation awards and a lack of praise for the truly talented. Missing out on higher honours is for many like me, the start of a realisation that not everyone is equally skilled at all aspects of life. It builds resilience which is so desperately needed later in life when people fail at things that actual matter like tests or miss out on things like work promotions. My future children will be told to go and have fun, to play fair but to play to win and be the best they can be. If they don’t know the score, I

will tell them but trust me whether they are aged five, or 15, they’ll know. As a sports journalist, I’ve witnessed many over-zealous parents making idiots of themselves on the sidelines of children’s sport football being the absolute worst and rugby not far behind. With that in mind, I understand the approach to a more participation-based approach, but skills and talent should always be acknowledged and championed. My one year of football at age eight, we lost every single game and only scored two goals all

season. Even at that age, it was soul destroying, my switch to rugby the next year saw more victories with few of them I actually contributed to in any meaningful way. I can assure you, the more enjoyable season was rugby because we won more. Kids are more resilient than adults in many instances. When they fall, kids often just get up and keep doing life at a million miles an hour. I hope this move doesn’t slowly eradicate competitiveness in junior sport but I fear it might.

Sailors seek support for Hobart trip The Marlborough Colleges Team Sailing has gone from strength to strength in the past six years, and now the team has been selected to compete in the Australia verses New Zealand inter-dominion competition. The inter-dominion is an annual competition between the top secondary schools sailing teams in Australia and New Zealand. This year the Marlborough Boys’ College team went to national competitions as a composite team. Under the event rules they could not compete in the Gold fleet competition, but due to their exceptional performance and the unavailability of some other teams, Marlborough has awarded one of the three spots for the Open class at the inter-dominion, to be held at Hobart during July. Team sailing consists of a

three boat team competing against another three boat team in a short nine to 10 minute race. Multiple races are conducted in a day and this makes for a highly competitive event providing great spectator viewing as well as some adrenaline filled racing for the young sailors. The team of eight are really excited about the opportunity to compete against the Australians. Their closest rivals, Nelson College for Boys, are also going, and this is a real strong point as both teams will be training together in the weeks leading up to the event. It is really great to see the team’s hard work and performance at regional events be recognized by the National authority, Ian Gardiner, southern regional support officer for Yachting New Zealand, says.

As with all events like this, a big part is the support that the team gets from the local businesses and the community, as without this getting to the competition in Australia would not be possible, Ian says. “We’d like to say a big thank you for sponsorship so far from Butt Drilling, First National, Allan Scott Family Winemakers, Mediterranean Food Warehouse Marlborough, City Collision Repair Napier, Keith Gregory and Harbour Heights Air BnB. “We also plan an auction night, and would love to have donations for this, and the team has firewood for sale, which they’ll come and stack for you free of charge. “The team needs more sponsorship, so anyone who can help with this can contact us at ian.qcyc@gmail.com”
