Jim’s generous work rewarded Continued from page 1. In his Tavera Street workshop, Jim spent hundreds of hours in 2017 updating, decorating and carving a series of large panels for the St Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Motueka. “When the new church was opened in 1988, I carved three panels with the names of all the people who were baptised in Motueka between the years 1857 to 1988,” Jim says. Jim carried out a similar project for the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Blenheim. Carved panels around the church interior bear the names of hundreds of those baptised there, and are inspected regularly by visitors to the church. “It gives people a sense of where they come from,” Jim says. The foyer of the church also features another of Jim’s

carvings. Jim has produced a range of traditional Maori carved furnishings and artworks for Catholic parishes throughout New Zealand since the late 1960s. “I saw the need to recognise our multiculturalism when I first came here,” Jim says, “so I’ve been incorporating it in my work ever since. “We need to adapt – culture changes, and so must we.” Jim has been encouraged in recent years by his wife, Trish Falleni, whose heritage includes the Canvastown Ngati Kuia iwi. Jim first carved a tabernacle for a new church in Stokes Valley and later carved similar items for parishes in Wairoa, Motueka and Stoke. He was a driving force behind the establishment of the Tawhiti A Maru Marae in Wairoa, where he completed all of the carvings inside the whare nui and assisted with

exterior carvings. He designed the plan for the whare kai at the Te Hora Marae at Canvastown. In addition to these projects he has carved other items for various parishes from lecterns to patronal saint figures. His carvings are also present internationally at locations in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Ireland, and the Philippines. When he is not carving, Jim is a marriage and funeral celebrant and works with Hospice Marlborough to record biographies for people. “It’s something to leave the family, the story of someone’s life,” Jim says. He established the Menz Sheds in Waimea and Blenheim to provide social opportunities for older isolated men. Birthday Honours List. Yvette Corlett, the first New Zealand woman to win an Olympic gold medal, has been made a Dame. The award comes after her death and marks the contribution Yvette, who competed as Yvette Williams, made to athletics in New Zealand. The other three Dames in the 2019 Birthday honours are Dr Sue Bagshaw, who has worked in the youth health sector for 30 years; Areta

Koopu, recognised for her services to Maori and the community; and Academy Award-winning screenwriter, film producer and musician Fran Walsh. The three new sirs are Paul Adams, for services to philanthropy, the community, playwright Roger Hall and rugby league super coach Graham Lowe. Kiwi driver Scott Dixon was named as a Companion of the NZ Order of Merit for his

services to motorsport. Also named as an officer was heavyweight boxing great David Tua, for his services to the sport as well as youth and the community. Well-known Kiwi actress Robyn Malcolm has been named as a Member of the NZ Order of Merit, for her services to television and theatre. The New Zealand Order of Merit and the Knight Companions rank third in the

hierarchy of the New Zealand Royal Honours system. They recognise pre-eminent contributions at national or international level. The country’s most senior honour is the Order of New Zealand. It is limited to 20 living persons at any time - along with additional and honorary members. Second in rank are Knight or Dame Grand Companions of the New Zealand Order of Merit (GNZM).

More strike action looms More strike action is on the cards for teachers unless negotiations tackle the big issues faced by the education sector. Secondary schools will see a rostering home strike where certain year levels are not taught for a day. Yesterday saw Year 9 students rostered home. Rolling regional strikes will likely take place in Marlborough on Thursday, June 20.

Ben Glover ‘handpicked’ for judging Predator free Havelock group Linton Brown, Liz Mathews and Sandra Currie hope the Havelock community will get behind their trapping initiative.

Let’s rid Havelock of rats!

By Bill McElhinney When Sandra Currie moved from Pelorus to Havelock, she noticed the absence of birdsong. “There was a lot of birdsong where we used to live,” Sandra says. “Havelock was so quiet by comparison.” It didn’t take Sandra long to find out why. Rats, big ones and lots of them, were decimating the local fauna, so Sandra decided to do something about it. The result is the launch of a new community group, Havelock Bird Song- Waiata Manu, which aims to create a predator free Havelock. “We want create a predator free

township in which our native species can flourish, so we all get to see and hear more native birds and bird song,” Sandra says. “We think the size and area of Havelock township makes this very achievable.” The group has set up a trap library, where Havelock residents can buy or borrow traps. The trappers are asked to record their catches, which will be entered into a NZ wide data base. “Our first targeted predator will be rats,” Sandra says. “Chances are they are sneaking onto properties and most nights after you shut the door, big, fat rats come into our garden and feast on

any insects, seeds or birds they can find. “When we become good at rat catching, we’ll move on to other predator species such as possums, stoats, weasels and ferrets,” Sandra says. Eventually the group would like to have traps all along the estuary, in the marina and up the top of Lawrence Street hillside area. “But we need to get very good at what we are doing and we need to get as much community support as we can,” Sandra says. Havelock Menz Shed are making 100 traps, with 35 ready to go, and Havelock Lions have got behind the project and donated

$400 for traps. “And if you don’t want to handle dead rodents, we have people who can come and empty traps and re-set them for you,” Sandra says. The Havelock Birdsong committee is being supported by Havelock Vision 20/20, who will handle their administration. They are also working with The Predator Free NZ 2050 group and Picton Dawn Chorus to share methods and results. “We are starting small, but we hope to get a lot of local residents involved,” Sandra says. To get involved, contact sandra@pelorusvalley.co.nz or phone 027 229 2486.

Marlborough winemaker and respected wine judge, Ben Glover, has been invited to attend the annual Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards (MIWA), in South Africa as an international guest judge. Michelangelo is South Africa’s largest wine competition, having received in excess of 2250 entries in 2018. Every judge is hand-picked and invited based on their international judging experience and credibility, with Ben selected because of his expertise in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, having made the wine varietal for over 20 years.

Watch for the new STOP sign NOTICE TO RATEPAYERS LOCAL AUTHORITY ELECTIONS 2019 Local authority elections will be held on Saturday, 12 October this year. To receive your postal voting document you should ensure you are on the Electoral Roll that will close on 16 August 2019. After this date you can still enrol and will need to cast a ‘special vote’.

By Bill McElhinney There’s a new compulsory stop sign in town, but some Blenheim motorists seem happy to ignore it. There are now compulsory stop signs where Muller Road crosses Weld Street, an intersection that has been the site of a number of crashes. “Weld Street carries quite a good flow of traffic, and there have been a number of incidents, some of them serious, at this intersection,” Marlborough road safety

volunteer, Nigel Perry, says. “Drivers must come to a complete stop, and assess the traffic flow carefully, before crossing or coming on to Weld Street,” Nigel says. However, when The Sun visited the intersection earlier this week, a number of drivers sailed through without stopping completely, some barely slowing down as they turned into Weld Street from Muller Road. The road rules state that you must come to a com-

plete stop, not just slow down, at a stop sign. Stop in a place where you can see vehicles coming from all directions. Stay stopped until you have given way to all other vehicles, including cycles and motorcycles. You must not go until it is safe. Road users are reminded that failing to stop or give way at an intersection is an offence. The penalty for this offence is a $150 fine plus 20 demerit points.

Important note: In this public notice the term ‘council district’ includes a city, district and regional council area and where established, a community board area. The term also includes the area of the Auckland Council and the local boards.

RESIDENTIAL ELECTORS

If you are registered as a Parliamentary elector, you will automatically be enrolled as a residential elector of the appropriate council district and as the case may be, community board or local board for the address in respect of which you are registered as a Parliamentary elector.

RATEPAYER ELECTORS

If you are a residential elector in a council district where you live, but pay rates on a property in another district, you may be eligible to enrol as a non-resident ratepayer elector in that other council district. You may become a non-resident ratepater elector for a council district if you are a ratepayer for that area and the address in respect of which you are registered as a Parliamentary elector is outside of that area. A firm, company, trust, corporation or society which pays rates on a property in a council district may nominate one of its members or officers as a ratepayer elector, provided that the nominator and the nominated person are both registered as Parliamentary electors at addresses which are outside the council district within which the property is situated. In the case of partners, joint tenants and tenants in common, who collectively pay rates on a property in a council district, one of the group may be nominated to be entered on the ratepayer electoral roll. Again, that person and the nominator must be registered as Parliamentary electors at addresses outside the council district within which the property is situated. Eligibility to enrol or be nominated may depend on individual circumstances. Only one enrolment can be made for any council district no matter how many properties are owned within that council district. No person may be enrolled more than once for any council district.

EXISTING RATEPAYER ELECTORS

New electoral rolls are compiled every three years for the local authority elections. If you are enrolled as a ratepayer elector, or were nominated as a ratepayer elector, for the 2016 local authority elections, or at any time since that election, you should have already received an enrolment confirmation form or other advice on your ratepayer elector status. If you have not received this form or advice, or have lost it, please contact the local council to which you pay rates, or phone toll free 0800 54 8683.

NEW RATEPAYER ELECTORS

If you think you may be eligble to enrol or to make a nomination as a ratepayer elector, then you need to obtain an Enrolment Form for Ratepayer Electors from the local council where you pay your rates. Make sure you do this early to allow time for any questions to be dealt with before the ratepayer electoral roll closes on Friday, 16 August 2019. The Electoral Officer will be able to help you with your application. This public notice is issued pursuant to Section 39(1)(a), Local Electoral Act 2001 on behalf of all local authority Electoral Officers.

AA Positive rating for council Ma rlborough Distr ict Council’s financial management has been confirmed by rating agency S&P Global Ratings, with council retaining its AA Positive long term credit rating. In February this year the council was one of just seven New Zealand local councils to improve its rating from having a stable to positive outlook following a similar action by S&P on the New

Zealand Government. The S&P assessment takes into account the financial position of the council group, which includes MDC Holdings Ltd, Port Marlborough NZ Ltd and Marlborough Airport Ltd. S&P said the Council’s “robust financial management and moderate debt burden continues to support its ratings. It noted the council’s long

term plan calls for higher levels of capital expenditure over the next few years as council continues to renew and upgrade it infrastructure. “Although this will result in a higher after-capital deficit, we believe Marlborough’s robust financial management and the country’s excellent institutional settings will enable the council to keep its debt burden moderate relative to domestic peers.”

THANK YOU! Richard, Rowan and Stacey would like to thank all of the Woody Pig & Deer hunt sponsors, volunteers, Renwick Volunteer Firefighters and everyone involved in making this year's event a record breaking success. 80 High Street, Renwick, Marlborough Phone 03 572 8007 www.woodbournetavern.co.nz info@woodbournetavern.co.nz

Cyclone setback for Laura’s Mozambique mission By Bill McElhinney Blenheim woman Laura Monahan’s Mozambique mission has suffered a setback. Laura is the founder and CEO of the Liberty Project in Pemba, Mozambique, a project to help free of girls and women from backgrounds of oppression, abuse and sexual exploitation. Laura, who grew up in Blenheim where her parents still live, says it’s estimated that around 98 per cent of Mozambican females have been sexually abused, whether it be from cultural ceremony, forced sexual labour, or the ‘norms’ of womanhood that the culture perpetrates. But after a category 4 cyclone swept through Pemba in March, Laura’s organi-

ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE For the past two years, Jeff Stanton of Precision Auto has been providing emergency roadside assistance for motorists in Marlborough. He is the Blenheim contractor for the major insurance companies who call on him 24/7 to assist with everything from jumpstarts through to running out of fuel. And because flat batteries were one of the leading causes of vehicle breakdowns, Jeff decided to purchase a new van and stock it with a range of batteries to give motorists the option of buying a new one then and there. “I saw the potential as it’s far more convenient to carry batteries with me instead of just giving a jumpstart. I even carry mobile Eftpos to make it easy,” Jeff says. What makes it even more convenient is that Precision Auto is an agent for Marshall Batteries, which also offers its own 24/7 urgent roadside assistance and mobile car battery replacement. “If you don’t have roadside assistance with your vehicle insurance company, and you find yourself with a flat battery, need fuel or have a flat tyre, you can phone Marshall’s 0800 number (0800 battery) and they will

Locals raise $90k to save oaks

W H E N O N LY T H E B E S T W I L L D O !

Grant Baxter is determined to save the oaks.

By Aimee O’Hagan A group of local tree-lovers have managed to raise over $90,000 in the space of a month, which is set to be used to save 70 oak trees on Dog Point Road. In March, the trees – whose branches grow dangerously close to the power lines above – were deemed by Marlborough District Council and Marlborough Lines to be a “hazard” and a “fire risk”. After being told that the trees will have to be felled, Dog Point Road residents and Lake Timara Lodge (which resides at the end of the avenue) owners alike have been “desperately” searching for alternative solutions. Two possible alternatives included undergrounding the lines and redirecting the lines. Dog Point Road resident and Marlborough real estate agent, Grant Baxter, who is part of the group fighting for the survival of the 30 year-old trees, says that they have decided to opt for the undergrounding of the lines. He adds that this is set to cost approximately $160,000. “Our group believe if we can raise $100,000 plus by way of

pledges to fund the burying of the power cables, we can go to [the] council and Marlborough Lines and ask them to fund the necessary balance,” Grant says. Since coming up with the “pledge strategy”, the group has received signed pledges ranging from $200 to $25,000. “There’s been support from people in Kekerengu, Picton, Nelson, Rarangi, as well as central Blenheim. So it’s not only the Blenheim community who care, it’s people from all over!” Grant adds. Despite this amazing achievement, the group are still in need support. “Help and generosity would be very much appreciated by present and future Marlburians,” he says. “Every bit helps towards the cost required. “All trees planted help towards the beautification of the Marlborough landscape and we believe it would be a tragedy if they were cut down.” For more information or to sign the pledge form, Grant can be contacted on 027 297 1902 or at g.baxter@xtra.co.nz.

The new Picton Library and Service Centre has won an architectural award.

New Picton Library takes top honours Picton’s Library and Service Centre - Waitohi Whare Matauranga, has taken out top honours in the Public Architecture section at this year’s Top of the South New Zealand Institute of Architects Incorporated (NZAI) Local Awards. Held in Nelson last week, the local awards honour the best new architecture in each of the NZIA’s eight regional branches. Winners at the Local Architecture Awards level can also be considered for further honours at a national level. The new Picton Library and Service Centre - Waitohi Whare Matauranga, was designed by Athfield Architects and was officially opened last year. Marlborough Mayor John Leggett says the award recognises the work by Athfields who made

a real effort to understand the community’s requirements for this building, which go far beyond a library. “This is a space for the whole community to enjoy and the building’s design recognises that. As visitor numbers to the Picton Library and Service Centre - Waitohi Whare Matauranga continue to increase it is clear that people are using the facilities for a wide variety of programmes and activities.” Council’s District Libraries manager, Glenn Webster, saiyshe and his staff are thrilled with the result. “We are really proud of the new facility and we have a lot of visitors who regularly comment on the building and how great it looks.”

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street.

Q: What do you think is a good age for a young person to get their first cellphone?

Andy Facer Blenheim When they start high school. Social media exposes them to some harmful content and it’s asking for trouble.

Aliyah MacDonaldPedison, 13 Blenheim Around 12/13 so they can keep in touch with friends and family.

Chris Valli Blenheim I think 13. They are at high school and starting to take responsibility at that age and having their own experiences.

Kate Faith Blenheim Whanau benefit from staying connected when their child is socialising outside of school. A simple phone that can text and make calls is sufficient as children start high school.

Lindsay Burrows Blenheim Around 13 because they are mature enough to make good decisions and understand things.

Tasia Crawford, 13 Blenheim If I had a kid I’d give them a phone at 13/14. For me it would be a big responsibility to keep tabs on where they are.

Put those phones away! Dear Ed, I am continually amazed, and somewhat frightened, by the number of tradies I see driving around Blenheim with cellphones pressed to their ears.

Of course it’s illegal, but they don’t appear to be getting busted. Or if they are, they don’t seem to be put off. Maybe it’s time for some harsher penalties – a fat fine and confiscate the phone! Honestly, this practice puts others at risk, so please knock it off. I have grandchildren to worry about and I’m really nervous about cycling in Blenheim given the inattention so many motorists display. So do us all a favour and when you’re out and about, leave the phone alone! Cyclist Many Blenheim drivers still can't leave their phones alone Blenheim when they're behind the wheel.

Grove Rd bridge Dear Ed John Atwood and my great-great-great grandmother, Mary Barnes, farmed on the Opaoa river at Sandhills cotttage from 1856 and John, according to Buicks Old Marlborough of 1899, built a 40ft white pine bridge, costing 11 pounds. This was before the 1861 disastrous Wairau river breach. Twenty years later Blenheim was finally linked to rail with the opening of the rail/road/footbridge in 1880. From the start it was too narrow to carry traffic and foot passengers. Two drays could not pass, as it was only 3.6m wide! Situated about 70m west of the 1902 rail bridge, it is under the 1880’s bridge, and we would now be unlikely to find the remains of Atwood’s bridge, which was almost certainly swept away during the breach. Gaynor James Blenheim

Use rail, not roads Dear Ed, Congrats to Grant Robertson for the big Budget boost for rail. The answer to fewer trucks on our roads is more freight going by rail. Saves wear and tear on the roads and is far more energy efficient. Of course the trucking industry won’t be

happy, but they’ve had years of pandering to by the previous government, and as has been exposed recently, too many operators have shonky safety records. Fewer trucks means safer roads and fewer emissions. Good news for us all. Wagoneer Blenheim

Scottish Dance a lifetime love Dorothy Wilson has been enjoying Scottish Country Dancing for 60 years, and tells Bill McElhinney she has no plans yet to hang up her dancing shoes. Dorothy Wilson loves to dance. Little Dorothy Armitage was born in Cheshire, England, and grew up during World War II hearing the sound of sirens and dashing to the air raid shelter her father had built. “If the German bombers were being chased by British fighters, they would just drop their bombs as they fled and we were often on the receiving end,” Dorothy says. By the age of eight she was dancing tap and ballet, but several years later as she was dancing in a big dance show, she damaged an Achilles tendon. “That was the end of my ballet days,” Dorothy says. “But I was invited to a Scottish Country Dance Club at a church hall, and I discovered that with my ballet training, it was something I could easily do.

“I could dance when I was pregnant with my children and anyone from any age can do it.” “I started Scottish Country Dancing in 1950, and I’ve never stopped!” Dorothy worked as a private secretary for a large British corporation, and in 1955 decided to travel to Australia to visit an uncle who lived in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. During the five weeks on the boat sailing to Sydney she met Kiwi Keith Wilson, who had been working in London as a teacher. They struck up a friendship and Keith offered to show her New Zealand when she finished her Australian trip. On landing in Sydney Dorothy, through her British contacts, got a secretarial job and tried to find a Scottish Country Dance club. “But Scottish dancing was in its infancy in Australia, and I didn’t find

anywhere to dance until I was almost at the end of my time in Australia,” Dorothy says. A friend had told her she should not pass up the chance to visit New Zealand, so she did, resuming her friendship with Keith, which led to the pair getting married. “We moved to the West Coast, where Keith was teaching, but there was no Scottish Dance there,” Dorothy says. “Then in 1959 we moved to Waikawa, where Keith was head teacher at the Waikawa Bay School.” Dorothy started the Picton branch of the Scottish Country Dance Society with Keith in 1962. “I had to teach dancing, and we had a good number of dancers. “When Queen Charlotte College was opened in 1965 we were invited to stage a special dance performance.” Then in 1970 they moved to the Thompsons Ford Road, and Dorothy was delighted to discover a fledgling Scottish Dance group, which she and Keith joined. So what’s so special about Scottish Country Dancing? “It’s social and great exercise, it keeps you fit and you’ve got instant friendship,” Dorothy says. “I could dance when I was pregnant with my children and anyone from any age group can do it. “It’s a great family activity – there’s no alcohol – and it’s not expensive, you just need a pair of dancing shoes. “Like ballroom dancing, it’s very social. You dance in sets of eight people, it helps keep you fit and you meet great people!” Many people would have learned to dance popular Scottish Country Dances such as The Gay Gordons, the Highland Schottische and the Military Two Step. “There are hundreds of dances, and each has its own music,” Dorothy says “Scottish Country dancing does not have footwork as fancy as Highland dancing and it caters for a range of fitness levels. Dancers can adjust their movements to their energy levels.

ABOVE: Scottish country dancer Dorothy Wilson with her dancing shoes. She has danced all over the world and still loves dancing. RIGHT: Dorothy Wilson, centre, right, with a group of Scottish Country dancers performing at the opening of Queen Charlotte College in 1965.

“It’s easier on the body than many other forms of dance so I expect to keep dancing well into my eighties!” Dorothy has danced in displays all over the world, even in Japan, and danced with the famous Jimmy Shand and his Scottish

dance band when he once came to Blenheim. Dorothy had three daughters who also danced and one, Hazel Monk, is still involved with Scottish Country Dancing. “Dorothy has been a model to us at the club of how to dance

Scottish country dancing,” Scottish Country Dance Club member Miriam McNamara says. “Her experience shows in apparently effortless movement and in the way she is always there to help a less experienced dancing partner.”

The winners from last year's Bride of the Year Show. Bride entries are open for this year's show and the cut off date is June 20.

Tickets on sale for Bride of the Year By Celeste Alexander Ten beautiful, blushing brides have already registered for this year’s Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show which is set for July 20. Following on from last year’s new theatre style format, the show will again be held at the ASB Theatre. The organising committee is working hard behind the scenes collecting an array of donated items from local businesses which will make up the prizes, as well as the silent auction and raffles on the night. What they are excited to announce is that tickets are now on sale from the theatre or online at Ticketek, and for those going along in groups there is the option to book a row or block of

seats. If people are going to the show to support a particular bride, there are special passwords for each bride which can be used when booking tickets. There will be a prize for the bride who has the most tickets sold under their password. The passwords will be the bride’s initial of her first name along with her maiden name. Tickets cost $48 and include a drink on arrival and nibbles during the ‘cocktail hour’. “It’s important to note that while the show begins at 7:30pm, we actually encourage people to come along earlier to enjoy the trade table displays and nibbles,” show convenor Noeline Stewart says.

She wants to sell the house and move closer to her daughter and grandchildren, but he won’t let her.’ Stories such as this are all too common, and affects more families and older persons than you realise, Farishta Peterson-Ihaka, elder abuse response advisor says. Farishta’s role is part of Age Concern’s intervention strategy, meaning where all forms of abuse towards older persons are suspected or reported, she will work with them to provide support and advice towards reducing the harm caused by elder abuse and neglect. THE

GoldenYears Enduring Power of Attorney What do your cat, your car, your home, your heirloom jewellery and your health have in common? They are all things that you want to be sure are looked after if you are unable to. Few of us want to think about something happening to us that might impact on our ability to make sound decisions. The reality is, we can’t predict what’s going to happen in life that may impact on our health or wellbeing. Something we can plan for, is having someone in place to make decisions for you if you can’t make them for yourself. This is called having an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA). Having an EPA means you can decide, ahead of time, who you trust to look after

the things that are precious to you. There are two types of EPA: • Property: This EPA covers decisions about money and assets and can be put into effect at any time. More than one attorney can be chosen for this EPA. • Personal care and welfare: This EPA covers decisions about your health, accommodation and care. It comes into effect only if a medical professional or Family Court decides a person is ‘mentally incapable’. Only one attorney can be selected for this EPA. Money, health, assets, pets - they’re important to us. So it’s important to choose your attorney wisely - you want to be sure that your wishes and feelings are respected. Think about a friend or family member, a work colleague

or even a trustee corporation like the Public Trust. It does take time and money to set up an EPA - but the investment is worth it. Sickness or injury can happen at any time - knowing that someone can make important decisions on your behalf is investing in peace of mind, for you and your family. You can find out more about setting up an EPA at the SuperSeniors website www.superseniors.msd.govt. nz. You can also find SuperGold Card offers at www. supergold.govt.nz/directory which can provide discounts for legal services and setting up an EPA. Don’t leave it until later. Think about the things you care about, who you will entrust to care about them too?

The event, organised by Blenheim South Rotary Club and Creative Kids Marlborough, continued fund raising to support vulnerable children in Marlborough. Creative Kids Marlborough

works to develop a healthy sense of self through the creative arts. Earlier events had raised over $40,000 to work with Marlborough’s East Coast children traumatized by the Kaikoura/ Seddon earthquakes. That programme was so successful it has been written up by the Education Gazette as a model for other parts of New Zealand.

Blenheim South Rotary Club is part of Rotary International, a world-wide service club. Friends, colleagues, and members of the community socialise and work together to address local and global issues, all aimed at making local communities and the world a better place. At the global level, Rotary’s Polio Plus has since 1985, con-

tributed more than $US1.7 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. Rotary is active throughout the Pacific and supports many local initiatives right here in Marlborough. Blenheim South Rotary Club is actively seeking new members to further their world changing work.

By Celeste Alexander Are your grandparents the unsung heroes of your family? If so, the Sun Newspaper would like to hear from you! Once again the Sun Newspaper is holding its annual Grandparents of the Year Competition wh ich was launched last year, and was very successful. The way it works; Marlborough families are invited to send in a letter (no more than 200 words) and a photograph of their grandparents, telling us why they deserve to win. Entries can be emailed in or dropped into the Sun Newspaper office on High Street, Blenheim. The entries will then be judged and the finalists contacted and invited to come in to receive their prize. There are a number of generous, local businesses who have donated goodies for the prizes including; Dolce Bar & Restaurant, Speights Ale House Blenheim, The Honey Collection, New World Supermarket, PaperPlus Blenheim, Arthur Devine Inspired Salons & Spa, Jessica Jones Photography, Constellation Brands wine company, Debbie Webster of Mike Pero Real Estate, Indulgence at UFS Beauty Therapy Clinic and Alexis & Aubs Boutique. So families, get writing your letters and tell us why your grandparents should win one of these amazing prizes and send us a nice photograph. Refer to the competition advertisement on this page for more details. “We look forward to hearing from you!”

Alana Newman was very proud to nominate her Nana, Colleen Newman, for last year's Grandparents of the Year Competition. In her letter Alana thanked her Nana for being her "hero" for all her support while her mother was ill, and for raising her and her brother following the passing of their mother. Alana won third prize with her letter and thanks to The Honey Collection, Colleen received a beautiful gift basket. File photo.

Two and a Half Men have retained their three point lead in the Marlborough table tennis competition. They beat Battlers 8-4 in the latest round of competition, with Matt Millar again in great form. Matt had the ball on a string all night, finding the corners of the table with ease, and timing some forehands superbly. Rob Honour picked up two wins over a tenacious Simon Bishell. Rory Osborne has been a revelation at number three. He beat his father, Marcus, in the last single of the night. Earlier Rory had taken a set from Battlers’ number 1, Jason Kennedy. Marcus and Jason beat Rob and Matt in the second double of the night. Tradies beat Will’s Winners 8-4. The score was closer than suggested as Will’s Winners lost three matches at “deuce” in the third set. Alex Kennedy won five from five but Warren Haszard did well to get a set from him. Peter Welsh played steadily and was rewarded with two

very tight five sets wins over Warren and Marion Wood. Malcolm Honour won the first match of the night. For Will’s Winners, Will Kim gained two wins while Marion beat Malcolm Honour in four sets. Forest Gump beat Matt’s Mussels 21 games to 19 on a count back after matches were drawn 6 all. Vanessa Wood Lin beat Barbara Burkhart to make it 5-6, then Zac Cowdrey and Billy Hebberd beat Matt Pigou and Josh Sim in four sets to get the bonus point. Earlier Billy Hebberd was the pick of the Forest Gump team in the singles, winning two. Matt won his three singles for his team looking confident with his forehand looping. Josh Sim gained two wins including a victory over Zac. Spirited beat BFF 7-5, with three of the wins coming in the fifth set. Nathan Watson was again in good nick and was involved in a high-quality match with Jacqui Wood. Jacqui played a tremendous cross-court backhand at game

OMAKA

Omaka a world-wide attraction Yak 3 races in America his team. “It hasn’t just got one runway, so classic aircraft can take off into the wind,” Tony says. Omaka has become a bit of a hub for aircraft restoration, Tony says. Paul and Pip Hally from PMH Aviation Limited collect aircraft that have a rich history with the region. They’ve brought back to Marlborough a De Havilland Foxmoth from 1947, one of only seven in the world. With two other parties, they are rebuilding a Waco aircraft, which is the only one of its type in the world, and was previously owned by Marlborough Aero Club in 1936. “Whether you like aviation or not these aircraft are very significant to the region,” Pip says.

Graham Orphan has been publishing the Classic Wings Magazine for 25 years out of Omaka. Having lived in three different countries and travelled many more, Graham chooses to live in Marlborough specifically for the airfield. “I can’t think of a place I’ve lived in or visited, or another community with the richness and ability to work together for the greater good than Omaka,” Graham says. From the world-class Omaka Airshow to the Aviation Heritage Museum and everything else in between, the buzz around Omaka still grows. “People from all over the world are drawn to the positive energy and great activities here. “The community is absolutely remarkable,” Graham says.

The Marlborough Aero Club at Omaka Aerodrome has a long and intertwined history with the Marlborough region and its community. Established in 1928, it is one of the first aero clubs established in New Zealand and the first to own its own plane. Last year the Marlborough Aero Club celebrated its 90 year anniversary in April with an open day, where the public were invited to have a look around the Omaka Aerodrome. The club has over 350 members from all over the country and around the world. The Aero Club teaches students of all ages and stages flying and other vital aircraft skills, whether for recreational or professional

reasons. In fact the Marlborough Aero Club is held in such high esteem globally that many pilots and aviation enthusiasts travel to Marlborough just for the opportunity to fly at the Omaka Aerodrome. Due to their speciality training in ‘Bush flying’, the Aero Club is

a quick and easy pick as a place to study at for many pilots from around the world. People from Hong Kong, Germany, Australia and the United Kingdom book in to come to Omaka for the course, and often stay for several weeks at a time. Not only do they get to enjoy the

“It was great, we were really promoting Marlborough and our destination. It really raised the profile,” Graeme says. The Yak 3 was imported to Marlborough in 2004, was restored, and began its first flights in 2012 and has been flying ever since. “Every time I fly I always see around 30 people having a look,” Graeme says. The Yak 3 scenic flights offer a view of Marlborough you wouldn’t usually get to experience, especially at top speeds of 500 kilometres per hour. Omaka holds a soft spot for Graeme because it was the place he did his first flying lessons. For Jay, Omaka has been the home of JEM Aviation since 2006. “Omaka is a real community of people doing what they love,” Jay says.

Chief pilot of Fighter Flights, Graeme Frew, and Jay McIntyre of JEM Aviation, have taken a restored Yak 3 Russian World War II bomber across the world for the last two years. The Yak 3, which is typically used for scenic joy rides was taken apart, shipped to the Reno Championship Air Race in America, and pieced back together in an open-air pit there for the public to see. “It was known as a Yak in a Box,” pilot Graeme laughs. Jay, Graeme and their team were the first New Zealand team to enter the competition. “Americans were blown away with what we were doing. “We might have even taught them a few things,” Jay says. Last year, they went back for another go and had great success. They even got on the local news.

With its grassy runways, wide open spaces, world class restoration projects on classic aircraft, and one-of-a-kind aeroplanes, it’s a buzzing community. Marlborough Open table tennis The Marlborough Open table tennis tournament, which was first held in 1938, was played recently. Canterbury’s Yi-Sien Lin , who won the title in 2010 on his last visit to Blenheim, won the men’s singles title over fellow Cantabrian David Walle. Yi-Sien beat Marlborough-based Nathan Watson in one semi-final while David beat the second seed Simon Fenwick in the other semi. Earlier Nathan had to pull out the stops to beat Canterbury’s Gregg Davey in section play 16-14 in the fifth, to finish as top qualifier in that section. Local players to qualify for post-section play were Alex Kennedy, Matt Millar, Sam Flaherty and Blenheim-based Matthias Krönert. Alex and Sam reached the quar-

ter-finals. Local player Jacqui Wood reached the semi-final of the women’s singles, losing to eventual champion Kris Alisch of Canterbury in straight sets. Earlier, Jacqui played a great game against the top seed, Mimi Walle, in section play putting some great smashes away and coping well with the different spins that Mimi was putting on the ball. Yi-Sien paired with Simon for a win over Matthias Krönert and Matt Pigou in the final of the men’s doubles. This was a good showing by the local pair, who tried to attack at every opportunity against the New Zealand representatives. In the semi-finals, they beat the second seeds , Gregg and David, in five sets.

PROEQUIP PE9028

After a round-robin competition, Kris took the women’s doubles title in partnership with locally-based Canterbury representative Vanessa Wood-Lin over Mimi and Canterbury’s Anny Li. Kris, a former representative player in Australia, made it a clean sweep of senior titles when she combined with Simon for a win in the mixed doubles over Yi-Sien and Vanessa. In the second grade, Matt Millar justified his top seeding as he took the men’s singles title by beating Alex in the final. Matt beat Nelson’s Paul Op den Buysch in one semi, while Alex beat Matthias in the other semi. The second grade women’s section was very close, with three players ending with two wins each in section play. After a count back

of sets, Canterbury’s Flora Lin came out on top from Nelson’s Glenda Ferguson. In Sunday’s junior events, Marlborough’s Rory Osborne won the under-18 boys’ single title beating Nelson’s Harrison Foote in a sporting final. Rory beat Nelson’s Kvido Tayerle in one semi, while Harrison advanced with a five set win over Wellington’s Tomos Christie. Vanessa beat Hannah in the girls’ final, with Nelson’s Mandy Lowther in third place. Harrison won a second title in partnership with Tomos when they beat Rory and Nelson’s Matthew Edmonds in the doubles final. Marlborough’s Peyton Ritchie combined with Genji for a win in the doubles over Finn and Nelson’s Joshua Pigott.
