Michelle to perform as Amy Winehouse Continued from page 1. The Stars in Your Eyes event is a joint fundraising initiative for two local charities, Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation Marlborough. It will be held at the ASB Theatre and will also feature celebrity host Tina Cross, who will also act as one of the judges and will be performing an entertainment slot during the evening. The event will be a glamour evening in a cabaret style starting at 6.30pm with canapes complimented by Whitehaven Wines served in the theatre foyer. The competition will take place in the theatre’s main auditorium where the 10 local contestants, who had to audition for the event, will perform as a wide variety of artists. There will be an opportu-

nity for the audience to cast their votes for their favourite acts before the winner is announced and performs one last time. Who will they be? What will they look like? For Michelle Chapman this is the first time she’s announced publically that she will be taking part. Michelle has chosen to perform as the late English singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse. Is she nervous? “I’m more excited than anything,” she laughs. “I haven’t shared the news with many people yet,” she laughs. “So this will be a surprise for many, but I’m super excited to be back singing and I’m looking forward to portraying Amy Winehouse.” Michelle is no stranger to the stage. She began singing with performance groups at

age four, and growing up in Wellington there were plenty of opportunities for her to be on stage throughout her childhood. In her teens Michelle and her best friend sang at every school prizegiving and she even sang for a few cover bands, In her early 20s Michelle took a break from singing when “life got too busy”, but did manage to sing at a few weddings along the way. She has since worked for the National Bank, now ANZ, for 14 years in the agribusiness sector and is enjoying life in Marlborough after moving to the region in 2016. This will be Michelle’s first time back singing on stage in public so a lot of preparation is going into her outfit, wig, makeup and overall performance. “I find Amy’s tone is very

similar to mine, plus I really love her music. She has a lot of personality before she even opens her mouth, so I’ve put a lot of thought into how I portray her on stage,” she says. At the auditions for Stars in Your Eyes held in May, Michelle says she was sick with a cold. “At first I was worried about how it would affect my voice, but I ended up nailing it. “I think having a cold gave me an edge. “This is an amazing event for a good cause and I’m really looking forward getting up there and giving it my best. I have family coming from Wellington to watch who haven’t seen me sing in years, so I can’t wait,” Michelle says. Each contestant has chosen a charity which will benefit

Dog park on the way

An old landfill site at Foxes Island is being transformed into Marlborough’s first dedicated dog park, and should be ready early in September. The park will have separate areas for large dogs and small dogs, and a combined area for both. It will also have weave poles, tunnels, hurdles and a balance beam, plus water bowls and waste bins. The fully-fenced park will be a safe space for dogs to run around. The Marlborough District Council has earmarked sites in Blenheim and Picton which could be developed for dog parks.

Congratulatory YMCA coming to the CBD Birthdays: Wedding anniversaries: 100 and above 50th,Message 55th, 60th, 65th,Service 70th, 75th By Bill McElhinney A vacant upper storey office block in Scott Street is to become a value accommodation centre. Robin Sutherland, spokesman for Blenheim Central Developments, says a deal has been done with YMCA New Zealand to establish a 90-bed facility in the offices that were formerly occupied by accounting firm Winstanley Kerridge. The 1240 square metre space will be fitted out by Blenheim Central Developments and leased to the YMCA. There will a variety of room spaces, kitchen facilities and a lecture theatre, as the YMCA provides accommodation to cater for various groups. The office space was once oc-

cupied by up to 100 people, but in recent years has been largely unoccupied. Blenheim Central Developments had considered using the space for apartments, but a lack of secure parking space proved a problem. “People buying a central apartment would still want secure car parking, and we couldn’t provide that,” Robin says. The YMCA plan was inspired by a trip Robin made to Christchurch, where he stayed in the YMCA accommodation there. The experience prompted him to contact YMCA officials and bring them to Blenheim to tour the province and view the Scott Street premises. They agreed the site was perfect and plans were draw up for the

new centre, which is scheduled to be completed by February-March next year. YMCA New Zealand has a New Zealand - wide network of accommodation facilities, which can accommodate individuals, couples, school groups and sporting teams. YMCA Christchurch has for decades delivered high quality value accommodation to a range of groups and individuals in its 260 bed central Christchurch complex. “This was an opportunity to help solve a significant accommodation shortage in Blenheim while also allowing the YMCA to reach out into the community,” CEO Josie Ogden Schroeder says. The YMCA is well known across New Zealand for the work they do in youth development, sport and

recreation, education and events tourism. Marlborough Mayor John Leggett and Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith are both enthusiastic about the development. “Well done to those who had the vision for this development. It is great to see such a significant investment in our CBD,” John says. “This development is really great news for our CBD,” Stuart says. “This facility will draw in people to support our cafes, restaurants and other businesses, and create the vibrancy that has been lacking. “I hope that this development will provide the impetus, and the confidence, for other developers to follow suit and fill the town centre’s other empty first storey spaces. This is a great start.”

Feedback on fish stocks

Fisheries New Zealand wants public feedback on proposals to change catch limits for 20 fish stocks. “We’ve reviewed 13 inshore fish and shellfish stocks and seven deepwater stocks and want your feedback” Fisheries management director, Stuart Anderson, says. “We’re proposing that amateur fishing charter vessels be required to add four species to the list of fish stocks they report: snapper, scallops, blue cod and tarakihi.” Submissions can be made by email, online survey, or by post. Feedback closes at 5pm on July 26. New catch limits will then take effect from 1 October.

THINKING OF RENOVATING? WE MAKE IT EASY

There was plenty of enthusiastic chatter between students, parents and training organisations at the Marlborough Careers Evening, held last Monday where 835 people attended. This annual event was held at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 and saw a record of 52 exhibitors. There were a good number of Marlborough companies who spent time with

the public explaining what their industries were about, and what steps students needed to take to work there. This year was the first time that the Marlborough District Council attended, and according to Earle Williams, senior advisor of HR and Health and Safety, it was a great move on their behalf. “It’s a great opportunity for us to be here and what people may

not realise, is that there are so many career opportunities within council… from biodiversity through to engineering,” he says. Shaun and Kelly Forbes of Forbes Panel & Paint were enjoying their interaction with the public. “It was really good to see a lot more trades there, this is what Marlborough needs. If we can entice our youth into trades and

to stay in Marlborough it gives them another option,” Shaun says. “I did the MBC Gateway programme myself back in 1986 and eventually went out on my own. I have a second year apprentice who was a Gateway student, and another one with us now. “It was also really good to see the number of females enquiring about the trades,’ he says.

Carnival concert The Marlborough Civic Orchestra’s Carnival concert on Saturday showcases a range of Marlborough musical talent. Professional cellist turned wine-making student, Elgee Leung, will conduct classics including the first movement of Franz Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony and the Wedding March from Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s dream. Barbara Song and Kimberley Jones play dual piano in The Carnival of the Animals, a comic composition by French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. Behind the baton for some rousing show themes will be David Brooks, Marlborough’s own ‘Greatest Showman,’ renowned for the sense of fun he brings to music. The audience will be treated to a world-first performance of Allegro Cavallo Negro, composed by Kodi Rasmussen when a student at Marlborough Boys’ College. Now studying at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington, 18-year-old Kodi returns to

Blenheim to conduct this first movement in what will be a three movement composition. Guest soloist, soprano Oliva Sheat, returns to her Blenheim hometown to perform some wellloved classics. Last year, for the second time, the Dame Malvina Major Scholar performed with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra as a finalist in the New Zealand Aria Competition. There will be a bittersweet note to the programme with David singing a tribute to the orchestra’s most senior member, trumpeter David Beaumont, who died on June 4 aged 88. Also remembered will be bass clarinettist Malcolm Fretter, who died in December last year. The Marlborough Civic Orchestra takes to the stage for the Carnival performance at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim at 7pm. Tickets are $32.50 for adults and $10 for children under 16, with family and senior discounts available.

David Brooks, Marlborough’s own ‘Greatest Showman,’ will be behind the baton for some rousing show themes at the Marlborough Civic Orchestra’s Carnival concert on Saturday evening.

A plague skink. These Aussie invaders have now been found at Riverlands and Havelock, and pose a threat to our native species.

By Bill McElhinney An invasive lizard that threatens our native lizard species has been found in colonies in Blenheim and Havelock. Colonies of plague skinks have been discovered at Riverlands and Havelock, and they are a threat to our native skink and gecko species. The plague skink, sometimes known as rainbow skink, is a small lizard introduced to New Zealand from Australia. Although smaller than native skinks, they do look very similar. Plague skinks were first recorded in Auckland during the 1960s, probably arriving accidentally in cargo. Since then, they have steadily expanded their range ”Marlborough has a high level of endemism of species, meaning many native skinks and geckos are found here and nowhere else in the world,” DOC ranger Simon Litchwark says. The threat from plague skinks comes from their ability to breed prolifically and reach high population densities in a relatively

short time. They compete directly with our native lizard species for food, habitat and space, Simon says. Potting mix in potted plants is a favoured breeding habitat and plague skinks will spread rapidly into bush, urban and even industrial areas. It is likely the colonies detected in Riverlands and Havelock came accidentally via vehicles from the North Island. Part of Simon’s work is to raise public awareness about plague skinks and how to limit their spread. Plague skinks can be identified from their generally smaller size, their iridescent colouration and having one large scale on the top of their head – instead of the two smaller scales found on New Zealand native skinks. Simon will be talking about Marlborough lizards, why they are so important and how people can help eradicate plague skinks at this month’s Forest and Bird public talk at the Blenheim school hall, 7.30 pm tomorrow, Thursday June 20.

Dear Ed, It is a sad day when so many people are trying to help protect things beautiful in Marlborough, and a disgruntled, penny-pinching ratepayer considers it necessary to criticise the widespread support and encouragement clearly demonstrated from community minded people. (“Save the Oak Trees? ”, Waihopai Ratepayer, The Sun, June 12th). To the ill-informed doubter, the beautiful avenue of oaks are definitely 30 years old. Supporters understand why the power lines need to be free of tree branches, so efforts are being made to have the power cable buried underground. Pledges of support are coming from near and far (even from Nelson).

Dear Ed, Pleased to see the teachers are getting a good deal at last and the strikes are off. However, I do hope they get more resourcing to deal with the growing number of dysfunctional children

in our schools. It’s a sorry reflection on our society that schools now have to deal with problems that should be dealt with in the home. Parent Blenheim

Fuel collusion? It would be a tragedy if each 30 year old tree was cut down with a chainsaw in seconds. While on council owned land, the oaks are considered by many to belong to the people of Marlborough, and not to nearby landowners. Every day, Dog Point Road is used by walkers, bike-riders, dog walkers and vehicles going to and from the Waihopai Valley. Waihopai Ratepayer does not speak for every other Waihopai Valley resident who may now feel they, and the valley has been discredited. With luck, Waihopai Ratepayer knows how to smile when the sun shines. Tree lover Blenheim

Dear Ed, Judith “Crusher” Collins vowed to investigate the discrepancies in fuel prices. She failed. Then along came Labour MP Megan Woods in the new government with the same intentions. She’s gone silent - failed. Why? Meanwhile, there’s widespread price differences. Levin and Bulls in the North Island are about 20 cents less, or even more, than Marlborough. Auckland are reportedly way below Marlborough, up to 50 cents I was told? Why? But wait “there’s more” as the ads say. Within Marlborough Pic-

ton is about 6 cents below Blenheim. Why? Have you noticed BP will drop or raise prices and the others follow suit. Is there collusion amongst local fuel pump operators? It smells of phoney competition and the whiff of collusion. Why is AA relatively silent too? Why? What a great chance for some investigative journalism, but that’s rarely evident in NZ media today. She Shops another success By Bill McElhinney The She Connects She Shops clothing, shoes and accessories sale on Saturday raised just over $1100 for the Marlborough Multicultural Centre. The donated items were all sold for $1 each in what has become a popular fundraising event for the interdenominational She Connects group. The change of venue to the Elim Centre went well, one of the organ-

isers, Libby Barnes, says. “And it was really great to see women staying to enjoy the free refreshments and spending time chatting to each other. “That’s what we’re all about – helping women connect with one another,” Libby says. She Connects plans to be back next year with a similar event, the proceeds from which will go to a deserving local cause.

George’s ripple effect Blenheim 16 year-old, George Glover, is currently in the beginning stages of preparing for the “Black Dog Swim” – a swim that will span the length of the Queen Charlotte Sound coastline. Reporter Aimee O’Hagan chats with George to find out all the finer details. Not only is Marlborough Boys’ College pupil, George Glover, passionate about swimming, but he is also dedicated to bettering the mental health of New Zealanders. The year 12 student plans to swim the coastline of Queen Charlotte Sound in January next year, with the aim of raising funds for “multiple mental health charities”, including I Am Hope. George says the 200km swim will take approximately 10 days to complete. His plan of attack? To swim roughly 20km a day, with two four hour sessions in the water – 7am until 11am, then 3pm until 7pm.

“This is my personal ‘Everest’ – it seriously scares me.” In between swims, George plans to sleep and eat on a boat. He was namely inspired to do so by a man named Ross Edgeley, who spent 157 days swimming 3200km around the coast of Great Britain. “I thought that if I’m gonna do it, I gotta do it for something,” George says. “I can’t just do it for myself, or it’ll fade away and people will forget about it.” George mentions that he had two options when deciding on what the bigger purpose of the swim will be. “It was either climate change... Or it was mental health, which I feel impacts us more in our everyday at the moment and needs to be talked about.” “This is my personal ‘Everest’ – it seriously scares me,” he admits. “I know my mental health will be put to the test. “This swim will be hard, but nowhere

near as hard as it is for people suffering from different forms of mental illness which affect them everyday.” Simply raising awareness is perhaps one of George’s most significant reasons for doing this swim. “Sharing what you are going through is truly beneficial for your health and having support makes the task much easier,” he says. “In recognition of this, my family, friends, peers and members of the public are also welcome to swim legs alongside me.” George adds that this “endeavour” will need as much support as possible. He would be incredibly appreciative of any help from the Marlborough community, whether it is monetary, the use of a boat, food vouchers, or simply getting in the water – either by swimming with George or by getting in a kayak (or a dinghy) and rowing alongside him. He aims to get “everyone involved” in some way; to come together and realise that exercise is something that puts people in a good mood. “Even if you don’t like doing exercise, afterwards you feel great... Exercising keeps life and wellbeing balanced,” he says. “I challenge everyone to do at least one hour of exercise everyday for the ten days I am swimming. “If you are unfortunately unable to come show your support on the water, then show your support by taking care of your mental health and going for a walk, bike, or swim.” For George, swimming is a form of “meditation”. He trains seven times a week, averaging one and a half hours every training session, and has been swimming competitively for the last four years. For more information, George can be contacted on 02100347680, or via email at george311202@icloud.nz. A Givealittle page is set to be made within the near future.

Playing bridge is an ‘exercise for the mind’ By Aimee O’Hagan Keen bridge players from around Blenheim, Picton, and more gathered at the Marlborough Bridge Club (based at the Clubs of Marlborough) on Saturday for a day of competitive bridge-playing. They were there for the Marlborough Intermediate Pairs and Junior Pairs bridge tournaments, which took place simultaneously and saw approximately 78 people playing bridge at once. Picton Bridge Club member, Chris Marshall, playing bridge is “like riding a bike”. “Once you know how to do it, it’s easy, and you can do it again” he says. Local players Kathy Dowling and John Clarke dominated the Marlborough Intermediate Pairs bridge tournament on Saturday. Dowling and Clarke were the top pair in both sessions of play. They scored a massive 72.47 percent in the morning session and followed it up with 63.43 in the afternoon for an overall average of 67.95. The Nelson/Richmond combination of Celia McKechnie and

“But if you try to learn it when you’re older, it’s not that easy.” He says that bridge is definitely not just a game for older people – it can be played at any age. “There’s not many [young people that play bridge] – but it’s much better if you start at that age. “The earlier you learn to do it, the better!” Chris defines bridge as “exercise for your mind”. He mentions that there have been scientific studies done on the benefits of playing bridge, especially for elderly people. “There’s been studies done in the UK that actually estab-

lish that bridge players don’t get dementia and alzheimer’s as early as other people.” According to Chris, there are over 14,000 people who play bridge competitively across New Zealand. Marlborough and Picton are part of the Top of the South region, which also includes Hokitika, Kaikoura, and more. To find out more about how to get involved with bridge, Marlborough Bridge Club can be contacted on 03 578 1059, and emailed at marlbridge@xtra.co.nz. Additionally, Picton Bridge Club can be contacted on 03 573 7133, and emailed at pictonbridge@hotmail.co.nz.

Jenny Pomeroy finished second on 57.20 followed by Marlborough players Chris Henry and Ann Baker on 57.18. Dowling has now moved into second-equal place in the Harcourts Intermediate Champions League for tournaments across the Top of the South region just two points behind Pomeroy. Scores were more evenly distributed in the concurrent junior

event. Don Elley and Hans Van Berlo form Picton took the honours with 58.72 across the two sessions of play. Diane Horton and Shirley Culley from the Blenheim-based Marlborough club were second on 57.94 followed by Diana Whitten and Ruth field from Motueka on 57.16. Horton, Elley and Van Berlo now share third place in the Harcourt Junior Champions League.

Winter WINTER

Hold in the heat Double glazing is a way of creating an insulating gas layer - either normal air or special heavy gases - between two panes of glass. It lets in as much sunlight as single-glazed windows, but is better at holding in heat. Double glazing is standard in most new houses but it’s also worth installing in existing homes

if your existing windows require substantial repairs or replacing. If you need to prioritise, install double glazing to the main heated areas of the house as well as to large windows. Benefits of double glazing Good double glazed windows: • Can halve heat loss through windows • Significantly improve thermal comfort in your home • Reduce external noise • Reduce or remove condensation build up in cold weather. Talk to your local friendly glass specialist to find out more. Another option for help to reduce heat loss is the use of curtains and blinds. Well-installed curtains can help to reduce heat loss through your windows, provided they are installed without gaps that allow air movement between the window and the room. Open curtains and blinds during the day and close them just before it gets dark to allow your house to gain heat from the sun during the day, and better retain it overnight. The aim is to create a good seal between the curtain and the win-

dow, preventing cold air near the window from getting into the room. In cold weather, the air close to the window cools down and gets heavier. Without a good seal curtains do little to reduce heat loss - cold air will simply fall out at the bottom of the curtain or blind, and warm room air will continuously replace it at the top. Installed well, curtains or blinds can reduce heat loss through both single and double-glazed windows. To provide good insulation your curtains should: • Be floor-length and touch the floor, or have pelmets above them with only a minimal air-gap between the top of the curtain and the pelmet (sill-length curtains are ineffective) • Fit tightly against the wall or window frame • Be wider than the window frame • Preferably be double layered with a thick lining. Net-curtains installed very close to the window, and in contact with the window frame, can be effective too. Call in and see the team at Guthrie Bowron who can help with all your window furnishing needs.

Winter WINTER

Pets need warmth too The temperature has dropped and the wind now carries a chill with it. While we can protect ourselves by staying indoors or wear warm clothing, what about our pets? Don’t forget about your furry, feathered or even scaled friends, as they also need special attention in the chilly months. Here are some tips to keep your pets happy and healthy through winter. A warm bed Cats, especially older moggies, just love warm spots near the heater or a cosy box lined with warm blankets. As a special treat, include a snugly heatpad and listen to your cat purr! Dogs that live outdoors need a warm and dry kennel away from wind and rain. A deep bedding of straw, or a heatpad, is an ideal way to keep your pooch happy, warm and healthy. Older or unwell dogs should sleep inside on a soft bed of blankets or supportive dog bed, which will help prevent painful conditions such as arthritis. Smaller pets such as birds,

mice, guinea pigs and rabbits are especially sensitive to the cold and are dependent on their owners to keep them comfortable. Place birdcages in a warm, dry area of the house, maybe next to a sunny window (but never a heater), and cover the cage at night. Birds kept in aviaries outside must have a sheltered area that provides protection from the rain, wind and frost. Hutches for rabbits and guinea pigs should be placed in a sheltered spot with a waterproof cover. Provide lots of fresh hay in their bedding to snuggle in. Watch out for sore joints from the cold Damp and cold conditions aggravate sore joints and increase stiffness in arthritic pets. Along with a warm, soft and supportive bed, a good diet and supplements to improve symptoms of arthritis are invaluable. Your vet has a range of treatments to relieve the pain of arthritis and increase mobility. Keep them warm with frosty fashion A clean, tangle-free coat pro-

vides better insulation from the cold, so it is important to keep your pet well groomed during the winter, especially those longhaired breeds. Don’t forget to give them mid-year munchies Pets that spend most of their time outside need more food during the winter to keep their energy levels up and provide ex-

tra warmth. Fine-coated breeds may also require extra food to maintain their weight. As a special treat for your guinea pig, a bowl of warm milk and bread, or bran and oats mixed into warm milk, will provide a hot, nourishing meal. A run like no other

inbrief

By Aimee O’Hagan Just like any other weekend, the Blenheim parkrun took place on the Taylor River board walk last Saturday morning. But this was no ordinary parkrun: it was participants Kay Leach and Bill Hunter’s 100th time completing the run. A timed, 5km run that happens every Saturday morning at 8am, the parkrun has been enjoyed by Marlburians – young and old – for almost three years. For those taking part in the run it’s 2.5km from the ampitheatre on the Taylor board walk to the exit off of the board walk that leads to Dylan Street, and then run the 2.5km back again. On average, approximately 33 runners participate in Blenheim’s parkrun each week. There are over 29 different towns and cities in NZ that hold a parkrun every Saturday. “It’s non-competitive, but you are competing against yourself because you are trying to beat your record,” Kay says. “It’s a really good starting point for training.” She says that not only has she found the run to be a handy way of keeping fit, but also a chance to socialise and connect with other runners. Participant Brian Mitchell says that the parkrun even has health

benefits: the run has apparently been discovered to be a way of preventing illnesses such as dementia. “I’ve heard they’re trying to encourage doing the parkrun in the medical profession,” he says.

According to the team, the parkrun is for “anybody”, of any age group, whether you’re 40 or 70. “I expect to see you in your sneakers next Saturday morning!” Bill jokes.

The Blenheim parkrun is set to celebrate it’s third birthday on Saturday, July 6. All are welcome to register and join this friendly group: to do so, visit https://www.parkrun.co.nz/ blenheim/.

Special Olympics Golf Ribbon Day Special Olympics Marlborough held a successful Golf Ribbon Day competition on Saturday. Eight Nelson athletes travelled over to the Rarangi Golf club for the day to compete against the Marlborough team. The skills competition involved the short putt, long putt, chip shot, pitch shot, iron shot and wood shot. The competition was held over three divisions with Tamati Matene gaining first place and Sam Claughton gaining second place in the 3rd division. Both men are residents
