Justin gets a star By Megan Connolly Justin Stevens has been fighting fires in the Seddon and Awatere area since he was a little tacker, tagging along behind his dad, Stewart Stevens. But more recently he has celebrated the milestone of being a part of Seddon Fire Service for 25 years, and will be honoured with a Gold Star medal. It started out with a 12-year-old Justin, who was “always tall”, jumping in the trucks with his dad, who began the local unofficial fire force, dubbed the Dad’s Army. Continued on page 2 Justin Stevens from Seddon Volunteer Fire Brigade was recently honoured with a Gold Star medal for 25 years of local fire service.

How to reach us

Twenty five years on the job for Justin Continued from page 1 With the support of the community, the Dad’s Army morphed into the Awatere fire service after it was realised there was a need for a local fire and emergency force “We used to turn up, use wheat sacks and chuck them in a water trough and throw them on the fire,” Justin says. “I remember going to a fatality when I was only 13 and stabilising

a car, and there was someone a foot or so away from me who had died.” Justin continued helping right through the eighties, and remembers it was the time when he was old enough to drive. The rural fire service has had an interesting history. Originally it was part of the Marlborough County Council before it became the Awatere Rural Fire Service.

Now it is more commonly known as the New Zealand Fire Service, dealing with everything from fires to emergency responses. Justin took a break from firefighting when he went to university, but when he returned at age 21 he joined the service, officially this time. The fire service has changed a lot since then, Justin says. “It’s the varying type of calls you get. Back then you had grass fires or

motor vehicle accidents. Now you might also get a cat up a tree or a call to assist an ambulance.” In the early days, Justin remembers attending a few house fires. “I remember being quite in awe of what a fire can actually do.” For Justin, his medal is another milestone in his life in the fire service, although he’s not sure he has another 25 years left in him, he jokes.

TWICE WEEKLY

By Megan Connolly The Stevens family is an all fire fighting family. Dad, Justin, and his wife, Rebecca, have been a part of Seddon Volunteer Brigade for over 20 years, and their sons, 19-year-old Campbell and 17-year-old Lachlan are following suit. The family is based in Seddon and have a rich history of being involved with the brigade. Rebecca began volunteering her time 22 years ago when she joined with a friend. “I was never very good at school so I really enjoy the challenges being in the brigade brings me,” she says. Each firefighter must go through a series of courses and skills training to be able to qualify for different tasks. These courses can take anywhere from a day to a week, and vary from truck driving to cutting someone free from a car. Even though each course makes Rebecca very nervous it’s worth it when she makes it out to a call, she says. “There’s very little detail on

the phone so when you get there it could be something like a chemical fire or a freight truck overturned. It’s a real adrenaline rush,” Rachel says. “One Sunday we all piled into the truck and put our masks on and everything. We could see the smoke above the trees but when we got there, there were only chimneys left! We wondered where the house had gone.” Rebecca and Justin’s boys have been part of the firefighting life since a young age, too. “It’s good to have young people involved. It’s a good discipline to have because it’s varied,” Justin says. Oldest son Campbell’s favourite parts of the trade would be putting on the breathing apparatus. A firefighter must put their gear on under 90 seconds, but Campbell managed to get his on in a speedy 67 seconds at his last training course. In just three months of being a volunteer, Campbell experienced call outs for earthquakes, fires, a plane crash and a heart attack.

“Ghost earthquakes” Four moderate earthquakes on Monday afternoon were reported as being felt throughout New Zealand and were recorded on Geonet’s monitoring website. But those four quakes never happened. They were what are known as “ghost quakes”. One magnitude 6.9 quake had struck near the Kermadec Islands, north of New Zealand, at 4.19pm at a depth of about 130 kilometres. GNS Science seismologist John Ristau said the ghost earthquakes were a result of the way the monitoring system worked to try to rapidly locate quakes.

Fashion, fun to help Red Cross By Bill McElhinney Elegance on a shoestring – that’s the promise from a group of Blenheim Red Cross ladies who are organising “Red Cross Crosses the Runway.” “It’s our fourth fashion show,” Red Cross member and show convenor Lorna Whitehead says. “It began five years ago as a fun evening to raise funds for the Blenheim Red Cross and to show off some of the fashion items we have for sale at our shop.” Shop manager Jax Skinner says they have a lot of top quality label items in the shop, some new and some pre-loved. Jax, who has previous experience in retail, has spent some time matching the items up and

working with models, such as Joyce Cattermole, to ensure each has suitable outfits. The Red Cross shop has been operating in Maxwell Road for about a year, and offers a wide range of items including men’s and women’s clothing, homewards and furniture. “We have about 15 volunteers who come and help in the shop, and they are wonderful,” Jax says, “and we could always use more!” Nearly two years after the massive 2016, 7.8 magnitude earthquakes that rocked Marlborough and the East Coast, Marlborough Red Cross is still working with the people affected, particularly in Seddon and Ward.

Red Cross staff and volunteers were quick to respond in the aftermath of the earthquakes, offering first aid, financial assistance and counselling. There is a lot of work being done every day in the community by a host of Red Cross volunteers. “Our van drivers transport dozens of people to all sorts of events,” transport coordinator Moira Conroy says. Around 100 Red Cross volunteers deliver around 550 meals on wheels every month. Other volunteers visit elderly residents in rest homes who may not have friends or family nearby. “All the funds raised by things like our fashion show go to

support our local Red Cross services,” Lorna says. “We are very grateful to all the people who have helped, especially our models, hair stylist Nadia Mason, style and image consultant Michele Brody and our MC, Annie Gleeson, from Style Angle Image Consultancy. “Red Cross Crosses the Runway is being held on Monday at the Public House, formerly Paddy Barry’s in Scott Street. “Doors open at 6pm with food and drinks available to purchase, and the show starts at 7.15pm. There will be raffles and spot prizes as well. The tickets are $20 and are available from our Red Cross Shop or Marlborough Public House,” Lorna says.

Kia Kaha te reo Maori is the theme for this year’s Maori Language Week, which began on Monday. Maori Language Week has been celebrated in New Zealand since 1975. It acknowledges and celebrates the Maori language as a cultural treasure for all New Zealanders. ‘Kia Kaha’ is a well known phrase in New Zealand, meaning ‘be strong’. When we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Maori’ we’re saying ‘Let’s make the Maori language strong’.

Tree comes down A 150-year-old British Lime tree on a Maxwell Rd property collapsed without warning about 4pm last Thursday, taking out the owner’s fence and blocking the northbound traffic lane. HEB construction and Marlborough Tree Care were quickly on the scene with chainsaws and a wood-chipper and soon had the road cleared.

Middle Age Spread opening tonight

Julie Loan (Elizabeth) confronts her fears with Peter Morice (Colin) and Colin Blake (Reg) in the background in The Boathouse Theatre’s new play, Middle Age Spread opening tonight. Photo provided.

By Megan Connolly The beautiful 70s orange and brown glow of a middle-class sitting room is the setting for The Boathouse Theatre’s new play, Middle Age Spread, which is opening tonight to audiences. The events of the play are set in suburban Wellington as three middle-aged couples, who have become impassionate and disinterested in their personal and love lives, share a dinner party. Told through a series of flashbacks to the events preceding the dinner party, the actors take the witty and wordy dialogue and create a natural entertaining, and heart-breaking show. The actors appear at home and

relaxed within their characters, moving naturally and often vibrantly around the stage. Peter Morice is the central Colin who is unenthused by his deputy principal role, displays great comic timing and carries the show with ease. Julie Loan who plays Colin’s wife Elizabeth, portrays boredom and the routine of love with ease, while Abi Balasoglou plays the bright and young Judy with sparkle. Colin Blake’s Reg sails through drunken tangents and is a nice contrast to the other more tightly wound characters. Judy Blake-Barlow as Isobel and Jonathan Loan as Robert

round out the dinner party with naturalism. Much of the subjects discussed at the dinner party, like the political climate, youth, relationships and the economy, have a distinctly modern feel to them. With brilliant direction from Emily Watson and Kristine Hudson, the play flows smoothly as it jumps between the flashbacks. Middle Age Spread is a vibrant comedy where you will understand and connect with each character as they fumble their way through their bored and complacent lives to find what it means to feel again. Tickets available from the ASB Theatre.

Gold rush on again at Havelock By Bill McElhinney The highlights and humour of the Wakamarina gold rush days are being brought to life in the latest production from the Havelock Theatre Company. In 2002 Havelock Theatre called a committee meeting to decide what type of play the members wanted to produce next. There were several suggestions: “What about a Shakespeare play; a comedy; something historical; a mystery; something with music.” In response to these suggestions Don Edwards wrote Wakamarina Gold, a comedy set in the historical goldfields, full of intrigue, music and yes, some Shakespeare. The play was well received 16 years ago, so the Havelock Theatre decided to re-visit Wakamarina Gold as a memorial to Don, who died in August last year. With a few updates from co-directors

Jennie Johnson and Gillian Edwards, and an enthusiastic cast and crew, the audience can expect a hilarious night’s entertainment. The play takes the audience back 130 years through the Narrator, played by Anne Stark, who guides them through the story at various times through the production. At an early stage, the villain, Spade (Rick Edmonds) enters the Fat Lip Saloon in Havelock and as a result of some trickery; local fisherman Jake Haddock (Gary Marshall) meets an untimely death beneath the wheels of an express bullock wagon. Events take a sinister turn as the drama unfolds, but light relief is never far away in this slightly black comedy. Romance, singing, music, Shakespeare, drama and comedy are all presented by a cast of 18, including several children, in this entertaining snapshot of life in Havelock and its surrounding goldfields back in the 1880’s.

Carmen entertains in Wakamarina Gold. From left: Anna Logan, Faye Leov, Kylie Linthwaite, Ian Cameron, Kim Weatherhead (as Carmen), Paula Marshall and Gary Marshall.

Opening night tomorrow, Thursday, is sponsored by Bladen’s Wines and The Mussel Pot. The season runs from September 13 to 15 and September 20 to 22 at 7.30pm, plus a

matinee on September 16 at 4pm. Tickets are available from Still’s Books Blenheim, BTS Marine Havelock, Take Note Picton and Foresters Café Rai Valley.

Seafloor surveyed

Chris Hutchison and Heather Beach, hold up their 1080 banner.

A complex underwater coastal survey of the seafloor of Queen Charlotte Sound and Tory Channel has revealed previously undiscovered natural features and sunken boats. The mapping project was undertaken by NIWA and Discovery Marine Ltd in partnership with Land Information New Zealand and the Marlborough District Council. The data has been used to produce an extensive new catalogue of navigational charts which were last updated in the 1940s, seabed maps and 3D images. NIWA marine geologist Dr Helen Neil said the seafloor survey revealed natural features such as complex pockmark structures,

scouring, sand waves, sediment braids and freshwater seeps not previously known about, as well as an extensive survey of the kelp habitats in the Sounds. The survey also revealed a number of man-made features and structures on the seafloor, including a trench that remains from the 1940s, dug for a wartime communications cable between islands in the Sounds, once considered for use as a base for the Pacific Fleet. Several shipwrecks and sunken boats were also located. One of those was the wreck of the Hippolas, a barque which struck Walker Rock in 1909 and was abandoned with no loss of life.

New Zealand company Waikaitu has started its 2018 seaweed harvest in the Marlborough Sounds. The company turns the Wakame seaweed into organic plant care products.

‘Biggest yet’ seaweed harvest underway Harvesting is underway in the Marlborough Sounds of one of New Zealand’s most invasive pest species Undaria, more commonly known as Wakame seaweed. The seaweed, which was introduced into waterways in the 1980s via ballast water from cargo ships, chokes out native species and fouls mussel farms.

But New Zealand company Waikaitu has turned what could’ve been an environmental disaster into an economic and environmental opportunity, harvesting the seaweed and turning it into organic plant care products. CEO Alex Pressman says this year’s harvest is expected to be the biggest yet.

Yes, so I can be seen because my car is dark green. Even when we go on holidays and overtake I have them on.

I have a red car and my lights come on automatically! They just adjust to the light.

My car’s white and yes, definitely. Especially when it’s foggy.

White and I do put them on. I like cars to be seen so that’s why I chose my car colour.

I have a white car and my headlights come on automatically. I definitely prefer them on than off.

I have a dark car so I turn them on. I think people with dark cars don’t usually think to turn them on.

Shelter?

Well done, Bill!

Dear Ed, A friend with over 40 years as a registered valuer in the top of the south inspected the highly controversial Blenheim Bus Shelter last week. They were unable to fully evaluate the area where the hole was as it was raining. Their professional view. Value about $50,000 and certainly not more than $60,000. There simply is not sufficient material used to warrant any more. Architectural work about $5,000. So how come a Christchurch architect was paid $40,000 and the total cost came in at $300,000. Standing in the rain. Blenheim

Dear Ed, I have this really old pair of jeans. The knees and seams are worn through to holes and I was on the point of throwing them out. But then I thought perhaps they’re in fashion! Allergies in your home Dear Ed, I read with much interest your article on Allergies in last week’s Wednesday Sun. Whilst I agree with much of what was in the article, one thing did stand out to me as somewhat contrary for someone with allergies. The article recommends “At least once a week wash pillowcases, sheets and blankets in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer or hang outside in the sun”. Hang on, hang them out in the sun, isn’t that outside, in the pollen, the pollen we are trying to avoid. When they are dry bring them inside, use them, dry your face in the towel, sleep with your face in the pillowcase and use everything else that now has a days’ worth of pollen on it……just a thought. Dear Ed, Is it true that the Marlborough District Council under its long term plan aims to increase debt by over 400 per cent over the next 10 years? What a legacy for future generations. Fore Sight Blenheim A Marlborough District Council spokesperson replies: As shown in its 2018-28 Long Term Plan, council’s

total borrowings, including those on-loaned to its subsidiaries, are projected to grow to $214m in 2028 from the current $92m. About half of this is for loans to Port Marlborough to enable the Waikawa Marina extension and the redevelopment of the ferry terminal to occur. The remainder is primarily for core council infrastructure such as water and wastewater systems. What’s important to note

is that while council debt is forecast to increase by just over $100 million, council’s assets are forecast to grow from $1.6 billion to $2.23 billion by 2028, a $600 million increase. Ma rlborough Distr ict Council borrowings are well below the national average and it received an AA credit rating from S & P Global (formerly Standard and Poor’s), the highest possible for a New Zealand local authority.

This is the best part of being locally owned and operated, owner Grant Stubbs says. “We know our customers well, and in turn they get to know us which makes every day enjoyable,” he says. Grant has been a Caltex retailer in Blenheim for 27 years and is proud to lay claim to being the only 100 percent locally owned service station, property and business. “This is our unique point of difference and something I’m really proud of. “I’m the longest serving owner of a service station that’s 100 percent locally owned, a dying breed you might say,” Grant says. It’s not only Grant’s face that has remained a constant over the years, most of his staff are also long serving. “Wayne, Ian, Bonnie and Pete... they are all fulltime staff who have been with me for many years. “Two of them actually came with me from Grove Road where the business used to be located,” Grant adds. “They are very loyal staff and all entrenched local people, so I’m sure most of our customers would recognise them if not already know their names.” Another friendly face of the business is manager Paul Fletcher (Fletch). Fletch has worked for Grant for four years and is in charge of the day-to-day running of the service station, as well as being an “extremely cheerful fellow”, Grant says. “He’s friendly, outgoing and cheerful and really good with the customers. A winner in the wine world A young Aussie who fell in love with New Zealand is the country’s top young winemaker. Bill McElhinney chats to Greg Lane from Grove Mill.

Greg Lane at the Grove Mill winery. Greg last month won the national Young Winemaker of the Year title.

It’s been a good year so far for young Grove Mill brand wine maker Greg Lane. The weather has been good, the vines are doing well and there’s the prospect of a good crop in the coming season. He and partner Sarah Adamson have just bought a house in Blenheim and Greg is looking forward to trying his hand at fly fishing in Marlborough rivers this summer. And to top it all off, he’s got a trip to France to look forward to. Last month Greg fought off some tough competition from seven other young winemakers to win the Tonnellerie de Mercurey South Island Young Winemaker competition, held at the Marlborough Research Centre in Budge Street. The competition is a chance for under-30s in the wine industry to show off their skills. Greg then went to Auckland to compete in the national final and competed against three other young winemakers to be crowned

the 2018 Tonnellerie de Mercurey New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year. Held at Villa Maria’s winery in Auckland, competitors were put through their paces, having to complete a number of different tasks ranging from financial analysis, blending, general knowledge, presentation skills, wine judging, through to marketing and laboratory skills . “To be recognised by the industry from a very talented group of competitors was a big thrill,” Greg says. “It’s a culmination of experience working in New Zealand and abroad, and I have been lucky enough to work with and learn from some very talented winemakers.” Included in the prizes is a travel allowance, a training grant, full registration to the 2019 Bragato Conference, a wine allowance and a fully funded trip to the Tonnellerie de Mercurey cooperage in Burgundy, France, which Greg is really looking forward to.

And he gets to feature in the popular Cuisine magazine. Thirty-year-old Greg comes from a wine-loving family in Adelaide, Australia, where Dad is a doctor and Mum is an artist and printmaker who is looking forward to coming to New Zealand for some artistic inspiration.

Greg won the Tonnellerie de Mercurey South Island Young Winemaker competition As a youngster Greg spent some of his school holidays pruning vines an Adelaide vineyards and went to Adelaide University to pursue his interests in science, food and wine,

finishing as Dux at the university in 2010. Then, as is often the case with young winemakers, it was off to see the world, working several vintages in Italy and the United Sates. Greg also visited New Zealand and did a couple of years here, working in Central Otago and Wither Hills in Marlborough. Then it was back to spend four years as a winemaker at the well-respected Shaw + Smith operation in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. But Greg really wanted to come back to New Zealand. “I fell in love with the country when I was here,” he says. “I really love the climate, the lifestyle, the whole feel of the place.” Greg started with Grove Mill in November, and loves Marlborough and the outdoor opportunities it provides. “I love the wine and food,” he says, “but I also enjoy mountain biking and tramping, and I’m keen to try fly fishing.

“I love the rhythm of the seasons and the challenges each vintage brings, taking the various components and blending them to make something great.” Inclement weather has made the last two Marlborough grape vintages “challenging,” Greg says, a sentiment echoed by most of his contemporaries. But things are looking better so far this year, especially in the Grove Mill Wairau Valley vineyards. So what does a winning young winemaker drink? “I’m a chardonnay man,” says Greg with a grin. “We’ve got an old Grove Mill chardonnay vineyard close to the winery and we’ll get some great fruit from it. “I like a nice oaked chardonnay. I think it’s a wine that most winemakers enjoy.” Might go well with a few of the fish Greg hopes to land when he takes his fly rod down to the river in the coming months.

Norimaki Japanese Restaurant Earlier this year Picton became home to a new Japanese restaurant, and after a brief period of closure, owners Udomsak Juchange and Shiho Tamura are gearing up to reopen on September 17. After first opening it soon became apparent that the public loved the fresh sushi made onsite as well as the mouthwatering menu with everything from deep fried, stir fried, noodles, soup and curry options. It was always the aim for the restaurant to have a menu that’s predominantly Japanese, Udomsak and Shiho say. “Every dish that we create, we have them tested by Japanese locals to make sure that our menu is the authentic taste of Japan.” The couple, who already own the Noodle Corner restaurant in Blenheim, say their focus is on fresh ingredients to make Norimaki the ‘best Japanese and sushi restaurant in Marlborough’. “We have an advantage with location and our suppliers. Here in Picton we can get fresh seafood direct from the fishermen as well as

our own top suppliers,” Udomsak says. “This guarantees that the freshest local seafood is cooked by the finest Japanese chefs. Moreover, every dish we create is given the seal of approval by our contacts in the Japanese community.” For those wanting to sample Norimaki’s delicious sushi but are unable to get to Picton, don’t worry because Udomsak and Shiho will be bringing it to Blenheim. “This summer we will bring the freshness of sushi from Picton to Blenheim, right to our Noodle Corner Restaurant located by the Farmers carpark. “We will also be introducing more sushi flavours to the menu, taking it from seven options up to 20 to choose from,” Udomsak says. Norimaki Restaurant will be open from 10.30am – 7.30pm seven days a week, and during the summer season the restaurant will remain open longer into the evenings. Dine in or takeaway, make sure you visit Norimaki the next time you visit Picton.

Hard work is the key to Tri success By Peter Jones, Sport Tasman Preparing properly for any sport can be a challenge, but training for a pursuit that incorporates three unique disciplines takes commitment and organisation to a whole new level. Fortunately, Marlborough triathlete Connor Guillemot thrives on hard work and structure. The 17-year-old Marlborough Boys’ College student, who is competing for New Zealand at the current ITU World Triathlon Grand Final champs in Australia, has adopted a relentless training schedule, involving 10-12 training sessions a week. It goes like this: Monday: a 45-60 minute, hard-to-moderate run. Tuesday: morning - a 3km swim, beginning 7am “on the dot”; afternoon - a 1-2 hour cycle, either on a wind-trainer or with the mountain biking group. Wednesday: morning – a fast/interval swim training beginning at 6.30am; afternoon - a 40-50 minute endurance run. Thursday: morning - a 7am one hour swim session; afternoon – an endurance swim, plus a cycle ride to work. Friday: a rest and recovery

day. Saturday: afternoon - a 45-minute run, immediately followed by a 2km pool swim. Sunday: morning - a 60-100km road cycle ride. Mixing this schedule with the demands of Year 13 schoolwork, part-time work, plus time with friends and family could be an organisational nightmare, but Connor prides himself on his ability to plan his days effectively. “It helps to have a structure … you have to be independent as a triathlete,” Connor says, stressing that being able to organise his time effectively is a critical asset in his chosen sport. So what has driven this young man to put himself through such a rigorous, disciplined regime at an age when most teens are hanging out, rather than hanging tough on the roads, hills or in the water? “It started out as me just enjoying what I was doing, then I went into competition and now it is a passion,” Connor says. “You get this feeling inside you when you are racing that you just want to beat whoever is in front of you … it’s hard to explain that feeling.” When Connor discovered cross-country running,

The long and the short of it is, without the sponsors these events wouldn’t happen. I am the proud business owner of Will Power Electrical and last year sponsored my partner Michelle ‘El Chapo’ Chapman for the first Fight for Life Education here in Marlborough. This year I decided again to sponsor a boxer but also the opportunity presented itself to get in the ring and I jumped at the chance. To physically and mentally push yourself can be both challenging and very rewarding. I have two children Jack and Charlotte who

The basic fundamentals of nutrition, exercise and how to look after yourself are the foundations that Life Education teaches the children that are lucky enough to get to see this wonderful team in their school.
