Painful journey By Bill McElhinney Amber Clark was just 19 when the invisible illness struck. “I had pain and limited mobility in my left elbow,” Amber says. “The doctors kept telling me it was tennis elbow and sent me away with some pain relief medication.” One evening she couldn’t take it any more and couldn’t stop crying. “My (now) husband, Matt, drove me to an accident and emergency room. Finally, they investigated my elbow, and they x-rayed me and said it looks like arthritis. After that night, my life changed forever.” Continued page 2. Amber’s long journey with arthritis

Continued from Page 1. A rheumatologist diagnosed it as “zero negative inflammatory arthritis,” which means they were unsure of what particular arthritis it was. The unspecific diagnosis made it difficult to treat. Soon afterwards, Amber’s other joints began to hurt. Severe pain in her jaw was wrongly diagnosed. “I spent years asking medical professionals if the jaw pain was arthritis. They insisted it was ‘highly unlikely’ because the jaw is usually the last joint to be affected by arthritis and because I was still young,” Amber says. “Finally, a doctor decided to listen and discovered it was arthritis. “I felt very frustrated as chiropractic treatment had made the deterioration of the joint and the pain worse.” Amber’s condition progressed quickly, and she was soon on strong disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs – DMARDs - which slow down the progression of inflammatory arthritis. “My doctor recommended we start our family because the medication can cause fertility issues with long-term use. “We went on to have two wonderful, healthy boys, but not without incident,” Amber says. Amber had chronic pain and fatigue during pregnancy and breastfeeding. “I was on very little pain relief and nothing really to slow down my deteriorating condition other than herbal pills. “Once I weaned my youngest son from breastfeeding, I started my next journey of trying multiple medications until I found what worked for me.” While Amber should have been on DMARDs but was not, her jaw joints had worn away, and she experienced mechanical difficulties such as jaw locking and extreme pain.

She had multiple procedures on the jaw, including cortisone injections, joint aspiration, and a discectomy, the surgical removal of abnormal disc material that presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord. Eventually, Amber was put on the public waiting list for a bilateral jaw joint replacement. “Three years on the list and my day finally arrived after my 30th birthday. “It was extensive surgery, and I was under for nearly 12 hours. “The first two weeks of recovery were brutal, but by week three, I could already feel improvement from how my jaw used to function. “I’m 34 now, and it was the best thing I ever did. I was scared to have the surgery, and I had regular nightmares and anxiety before going into theatre. But I would do it all again for the quality of life I have now,” Amber says. While waiting for the joint surgery, Amber received funding for inhibitor medication which she self-injects fortnightly. It has worked wonders for her other joints, and her overall pain and mobility is a lot better. “I changed my home environment. My family and I moved from Auckland to Blenheim a few years ago. Blenheim has a dry and sunny climate, which is a far more suitable place for me to live.” Amber says that living with an invisible, chronic illness is unfair. People who have a visible disability aren’t questioned when they use an accessible parking space. No one asks why they sit on the sidelines instead of getting involved in sports. People don’t judge them for forcing a screaming toddler to walk beside them instead of carrying him. And no one wonders why they need help bringing in the shopping. Raising a young family with a chronic,

Amber self-injects an inhibitor medication fortnightly to help manage her painful arthritis.

invisible condition was a journey and continues to be. Educating friends and family on her health is a journey. “But isn’t that what life is? One big journey.”

Over 20 years as a volunteer Lynne McMillan is a long standing volunteer for Arthritis New Zealand. First diagnosed with osteoarthritis in 1994, her initial contact was with an Arthritis Educator. She was working at the time and still remembers how it was so good to talk with someone who understood the pain and discomfort she was going through and could help her to learn how to manage it. Her journey with arthritis led to surgery and she had two hip replacements at age 47. Her work as a volunteer began as a volunteer appeal collector for Arthritis New Zealand’s annual appeal. This quickly led to her offering to co-ordinate her local area and when she moved to Blenheim she offered to organise the whole appeal there. What has kept her a volunteer for so long? “I know first-hand that the organisation matters” she says. “They were there when I needed help and I have had so much support that I want to give back” *The annual Arthritis Appeal Day is this Friday.

MGC shoots for the stars

Daylight Saving this Sunday Daylight saving starts this Sunday. Remember to turn your clocks forward one hour and spring into summer.

HopeWalk for suicide HopeWalk Blenheim will take place this Saturday. It’s a free event for the whole community to attend and aims to raise awareness of suicide. Assemble at Seymour Square at 10am, the walk is 2.7km long and finishes back at Seymour Square with entertainment and speeches.

Speed limits reviewed

Marlborough Girls' College students Saki Ukai, Jennifer Mattison, Ella Kernick, Mia Armstrong and Gracie McKay-Simpson celebrate the announcement that a mentoring programme will begin at the college next year.

back to their community. This is a positive flow on from primary through to the early secondary school years, Graeme Dingle Foundation regional manager Kelvin Watt says. “We’re already working with over 50percent of primary school-aged children in Marlborough via our Kiwi Can programme, and with Years 12 and 13 through our Career Navigator programme and Future of Work conference. “This Stars programme is the missing piece of the puzzle to help our junior college students. It’s a mentoring programme that supports, motivates and posi-

tively reinforces Year 9 students during their first year at college,” Kelvin says. Stars is already offered in various other regions of New Zealand and has proven to be highly effective, Kelvin says. Local GP, Dr Rachel Inder who works together with the Graeme Dingle Foudnation and MGC team, has been one of the instigators behind bringing the programme to Marlborough. “We have been looking at various ways we can enhance the health and wellbeing of Marlborough students,” Dr Inder says. “The Stars programme is exactly the solution we have been

looking for, as it builds trusting relationships that enables the students to reach out to each other in times of need. MGC principal, Mary-Jeanne Lynch adds; “Stars provides an effective platform to help our Year 9 students successfully navigate the transition to secondary school, and develop self-confidence and resilience. “It also develops powerful mentor and leadership skills for more of our senior students,” she says. Approximately 250 Year 9 students and 50 senior students will be involved in Stars from 2020.

With just a few days left until submissions close on the review of local road speed limits on Friday, the council is encouraging Marlburians to have their say. The review is asking for views on appropriate speed limits on local roads throughout the region. The review does not include speeds on State Highways, for example Middle Renwick Road/SH6, which is administered by the NZ Transport Agency. Over 300 submissions have been received so far, with a third of those in favour of more 50kmh areas (107 submissions), followed by 30kmh area (76 submissions) then 80 kmh areas (61 submissions). Old and New Renwick Roads have received a lot of submissions, along with some of the smaller towns including Tuamarina and Rarangi. Residents in Anakiwa are asking for speed reductions due to the number of children and walkers on the road during summer. The public can submit feedback on the existing speed limits by completing the online survey, before 5.00 pm on Friday 27 September 2019, at: www.marlborough.govt.nz/services/ parking-roads-and-transport/speedlimits/speed-limit-review Authorised by John Leggett, 29 Percy Street, Blenheim

By Celeste Alexander The stars have aligned so that, from 2020, Marlborough Girls’ College students will benefit from the introduction of a proven mentoring programme that’s a pilot for the region. Graeme Dingle Foundation Ma rlborough’s “Stars” programme will pair incoming Year 9 students with senior students via the integrated programme that is made of up three components. To kickstart the programme will be an adventure camp where professional outdoor facilitators will take students through a serious of outdoor and indoor activities to promote positive relationships and teamwork. Then there’s the peer mentoring where Years 12 and 13 students are trained to be peer mentors, following a structured programme that addresses key life skills. Finally there’s a community project where students plan, organise and spend a day giving something

Suffrage Day celebrated in black and white Last Thursday, September 19, marked Suffrage Day – 126 years since women won the vote. A number support staff in local schools celebrated the occasion by dressing in black and white to raise awareness in the community about who support staff are and what they do in schools. At present, Support Staff are in negotiations with the government to update their collective agreement, and running parallel to these negotiations is the Pay Equity process for teacher aides. The Marlborough Cake Decorators’ Guild has a r ranged for Dorothy White, of Whangarei, to demonstrate and supervise a workshop in a technique called ‘sliced fondant’. The sugarcraft demonstration and workshop will be held this Saturday at the Anglican Church of the Nativity Hall on Alfred Street, in the morning and after-

noon at 9.30am-12noon and 1pm-4pm. A highlight of this event will be to learn the sliced fondant technique which have historically been used in the making of ceramic jewellery, popular in the 1920s, and later using the polymer clays, Fimo and Sculpy for example. In this tutorial these skills have been refined to create

flowers in the sugarpaste coverings for cakes. Although the sessions will be working in sugar, creative ceramic artists could find it an introduction to an exciting skill. The demonstration is open to everyone for a small charge, but numbers are restricted for the workshop. To register contact Julie Wratt on (03) 579 2292.

Truck, tanks, models of all sorts - on show By Bill McElhinney If you see someone standing on a street corner photographing trucks, it’s likely to be Warren Piesse or one of his mates. Warren is a long-time truck modeller, and often photographs interesting trucks and sometimes gets to chat with the drivers. Warren’s photos are also sometimes used as a template for building a scaled down replica of the truck. Warren started collecting the popular Matchbox toys when he was a youngster. “They weren’t available in New Zealand then so we had to send to England for them. My Mum had a friend in England and she would get

them for us.” Over the years Warren’s collection of models has grown and now he has hundreds. He also has pamphlets, caps and other trucking paraphernalia, all carefully displayed in a room set aside in his Hutcheson Street home. This weekend Warren and other members of the Nelson-Marlborough Truck Modellers Club will be staging their annual display at the Redwoodtown Hall from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 10am to 3pm Sunday. “And there’ll be more than truck models on show,” Warren says. “We’ll have Star Wars models, Lego, tanks and aircraft

– all sorts of models.” Some of the kitset models can take hours to assemble and cost hundreds of dollars, and the detailing can be painstaking. The club was started in 1979, and is celebrating 40 years, and Warren has put together a book to celebrate the occasion, along with a special plaque to present to each club member. “We will have members from Nelson coming over and even a father and son coming up from Christchurch for the show,” Warren says. The club also holds monthly meetings at Brayshaw Park. “We’re the only modelling club still going in the South Island,” Warren says.

Rangitane to make their mark at town entrance A sculpture marking Maori history in Wairau is to be installed on the grassed area in front of the Blenheim Railway Station, on the corner of Grove Road and Dillons Point Road. The concrete foundation for the steel and bronze sculpture, designed by master carver Heemi Te Peeti, will be laid over the coming weeks. Rangitane co-chairs Janis de Thierry and Calvin Hart say the sculpture, Te Tauihu o te Wakaa-Maui, represents the prow of the waka (canoe) of Maui. It represents those who resided here before the first European explorers arrived and all people who reside after, they say.

“Maui stands at the front of the prow with Rangitane tupuna (ancestor) Takauae at the back. The design includes a taniwha, 2 manaia (Maui and Takauae) and the middle represents other tupuna and descendants.” Takauae and his wives, Hinerewha, Hinepango and Ruamate carry the whakapapa connections to families from Wairau. Also represented on the Tauihu will be Te Heiwa and Te Awa o Wairau. Marlborough was settled by Maori about 800 years ago, and Te Pokohiwi (the Boulder Bank) was a thriving cultural centre, with iwi from around the country visiting and trading

there. The sculpture will be built by The Heavy Metal Company in Wellington and is being funded by The Rata Foundation and a grant from the Marlborough District Council, as well as by Rangitane. The site is near the Rangitane commercial development in Horton Street, and marks the significance of the area to Rangitane. The unveiling and blessing of the Tauihu is planned for November 27, with Heemi Te Peeti and Rangitane trustee Jeremy MacLeod conducting the tanga kawa. Tuia 250 flotilla waka A new sculpture will be installed on the corner of State Highway 1 and Dillons hourua crew will be present. Point Rd in Blenheim.

Marine team takes out top science fair award By Celeste Alexander How have horses been important in wars throughout history, how did the tuatara survive the asteroid that wiped out 75 percent of life 66 million years ago, and the history of codes and ciphers were just some of the hundreds of science topics explored by Marlborough students this year. Last Tuesday saw the final judging of the annual Marlborough Science and Technology Fair which was displayed at the Stadium 2000. More than 450 primary and secondary

school students took part in this regional level after winning top awards at their schools. For over 50 years now, the Marlborough SciTec Fair has been run as a partnership of the Blenheim Lions, local schools and teachers with the Marlborough Lines as the lead sponsor along with a large number of other community sponsors. The new SciTec Celebration format now gives the students a chance to be a scientist and do experiments to find out about their world, be a technologist that solves problems for people, complete a research/

inquiry, create a visual art/creativity or do an oral presentation. Gold and highly commended awards were given out as well as the ‘Best in the Fair’, which was presented during a prizegiving last Wednesday evening. The recipient of this award went to Marlborough Girls’ College marine team students Baylee McConaghey, Georgia Waters, Amy Rowse and Sarita Sim. Their project is titled ‘Marlborough Sounds Urgent Call for Protection’ which involved research on marine environmental issues.

Walk raises awareness of debilitating disease Dementia is a debilitating illness that affects many families in Marlborough, and people were urged to help raise awareness of the disease by taking part in Alzheimers Marlborough’s annual Memory Walk. A good crowd turned out at the Munro Street car park on Saturday morning for the walk, led by pipers Cathy Hale and Barry Brown with Mayor John Leggett and MP Stuart Smith carrying the banner. Thousands of Kiwis around the country took part in the walk to show their support for all those with dementia. The walkers proceeded down the Taylor River walkway and finished up at Liz Davidson Place in the CBD. Research carried out by Alzheimers New Zealand shows around 60,000 Kiwis have dementia and the number is set to triple by 2050. Dementia covers a range of conditions which present as a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury. Symptoms can include memory loss, personality changes and impaired reasoning.

Aiden Conroy and Delwyn Humphreys wore their purple shirts for the Alzheimers Memory Walk.

Firefighter climb ‘an emotional experience’ By Celeste Alexander The recent Firefighter Memorial Climb up the Sky Tower in Auckland, held September 11, was a very “sobering, emotional experience, the three local firefighters who took part say. James Cowie, Scott Henry and Steve Smith joined hundreds of other firefighters to honour every New Zealand firefighter lost in the line of duty since the late 1800s, as well as the 343 New York Fire Department firefighters killed in action on September 11, 18 years ago. Steve and Scott completed the climb twice and James, who had never climbed the Sky Tower before, decided last minute to also climb

twice. The day began with a parade which finished at the base of the tower where the names of every NZ firefighter who have died in action, as well as the New York firefighters who died on 9/11, were read out. “Because it took so long to read them it really made you appreciate how many had died, Steve says. “We all carried the name of a US firefighter on our registration number and tag for a NZ firefighter, which was clipped to our jackets. “I had Ken Brougham of Rangiora who died in 2006 and Scott Larsen of Ladder 15, aged 35. “Scott had Leslie Newman of Manaia who died in 1955

and Robert king Jnr of Engine 33, aged 36, Steve says. The three men say they found the climb quite “hard going. “When you do the race in May there’s two categories that’s over 50 floors and a steel category which is 60. We did two of those though it didn’t end there, Steve says. “What I didn’t realise was that after we’d done leg one we had to walk down 15 floors to catch the lift to repeat the next 60, then walk down 15 again to get the lift back to the ground. “It was 150 floors in total I was told, but an incredible experience and a very emotional time for a lot of people.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street.

Q: We asked readers what do they see as the most important election issues

Cathy-Ann Scoon Blenheim Q1: Blenheim has been named as a resettlement location for refugees from March 2020. What preparation has been or will be put in place in order for that resettlement to take place smoothly? Q2: What is your vision to eliminate homelessness in Marlborough?

Jane Buckman Renwick Q1: The Marlborough Kaikōura Trail Trust is working on plans to develop a cycleway between Picton and Kaikōura known as the ‘Whale Trail’, what do you see the role of Council in this project? Q 2: As the Blue Gums pyrolysis project will not be progressing, what options do you see for future recovery/reuse of the region’s chemically treated posts, other than consigning them to landfill?

Diane Tolley Blenheim Q1: Do you support the concept of a dementia friendly community? Q2: If so, would the council be prepared to fund a programme aimed at promoting a dementia friendly community?

Lawrie Gibson Blenheim Q1: Will you keep rate increases to only what is needed? Q2: Are you prepared to borrow when necessary to ensure our infrastructure is kept up to date?

Denise Winstanley Blenheim Q1: Can you stop people in town parking on corners so people on mobilty scooters can see and cross safely? Q2: Do you have a commitment to keep rate increases at a reasonable level?

Sarah Jane Murray Blenheim Q1: Are any of the candidates going to do anything about the state of Queen Charlotte Drive? Q2: What will you do to stop the spate of accidents at the Wither Road - Redwood Street intersection?

Election candidates do they measure up? Dear Ed, Council candidates, like most roles, have a form of job description. Some of the personal qualities described in the Candidate Information Pack include: Demonstrates integrity and ethical behaviour; Ability to see and respect all sides of an argument; Ability to develop and maintain pos-

itive working relationships with councillors and staff, and respect for others. All those qualities seem appropriate, and important, for those we choose to represent us. My question is - Do voters have enough information to make that judgement? Have voters seen positive contributions from candi-

dates to their community, do the candidates demonstrate a willingness to work with others in support of the community and do they put the welfare of constituents at the top of their agenda. Every vote counts, let’s all use our vote thoughtfully. Vote Wisely Blenheim

Please could the incumbent Nelson-Marlborough Health Board Members seeking re-election advise the public which of them supports the sale of the Wairau Hospital "spare" land that I understand was gifted to the people of Blenheim by somebody who had real foresight all those years ago. Stupidity deserves accountability. John Sinclair NMDHB members reply: Times have changed for the

type and delivery of health care for the Marlborough region. A regional hospital does not require a large building footprint to meet future needs. Any future growth will be easily accommodated on the remaining land. The new Wairau hospital opened in 2011 knowing that there is more than adequate residual land existing around the hospital to accommodate any expansion needs of the hospital for the foreseeable future.

The surplus land to be disposed of has significant potential to benefit the community rather than remaining a vacant block. The Board has received a number of submissions promoting social projects for this area. The current Marlborough based Board members will be promoting such use. People with mental illness shouldn’t be isolated – there is a place they can go where they can find support and friendship. Bill McElhinney talks to CARE Marlborough support manager Carla Brownie about the services she Blenheim artist Caroline della Porta has been helping CARE Marlborough support manager Carla Brownie set up The Art of Wellbeing exhibition at the High Street Gallery. They are pictured here in front of a collaborative work done by those who visit CARE Marlborough. and her team offer. “People see the illness, not the person. But having a mental health condition shouldn’t define you as a person.” CARE Marlborough support manager Carla Brownie and her team hold hope for people who, Carla says, often feel like they are just a number in the system. “Mental illness is often seen as scary because people do not understand it. And it is often not immediately visible. But neither is diabetes or heart disease. You can’t see those, either. We shouldn’t treat people with mental illness differently. “People with mental illness are not criminals. In fact most of them keep very much to themselves – they’re more isolated than anything.” CARE Marlborough is a community based mental health agency providing two services. Mental Health Advocacy Service at 68 Seymour Street and the day activity programme at 26 Percy Street. The Percy Street house is open seven days a week and provides a

place where people can come for support and friendship. “We provide a range of activities as well,” Carl says. “We take people out for recreation and we recently went to Nelson to visit a similar support service there.” The house has computers, telephone, board games, TV, tea and coffee and a $3 lunch: Mondays it’s bubble and squeak; Wednesday, bacon and egg; Friday a burger; Saturday, pea, pie and pud and a roast on Sunday. “CARE stands for Can Achieve Recovery Every Day,” Carla says. “We aim to help people develop resilience, manage their illness and lead productive lives. And they can, with the right support.” There are a lot of young people who are struggling with various issues, and Carla wants them to know that there is a safe place they can come to. “We’re not here to dwell on people being unwell,” she says.

“We’re here to focus on the positive.” Percy Street is ‘a home away from home,’ and those that call in are encouraged to help around the house, in the garden, to feel a sense of ownership. “We run an open day every year where people can call in and see what we’re doing. “Our Percy Street neighbours popped in last year and it was great to see them. “People sometimes have concerns about having a place like this in a residential street, but the concerns they have seldom if ever come to pass. “People with mental illness are often isolated,” Carla says. “Society has become more disconnected, which only exaggerates problems. Here, we want people to feel like they’re part of a big family.” Carla says it is not only the number of people they see that has increased, but also the complexities of their issues.

"The prevalence of drugs, particularly methamphetamine, also adds to the problems. Another issue that Carla and her team have to deal with is the loss of services in Marlborough and the absence of services that have been nationalised. “People often get to crisis point before they can access the help they need,” Carla says. Carla grew up in Christchurch and trained as a registered nurse before moving to Blenheim in 1994. She worked at Wairau Hospital, specialising in palliative care for terminally ill patients before Hospice Marlborough was opened. She left Wairau in 1998 and trained at NMIT as a counsellor before going to work with Women’s Refuge, Bread of Life, Age Concern and St Marks Addiction Residential Treatment Centre. She also worked in an advocacy service with Barnados. She has been in the CARE Marlborough role now for 20 months, and it has been a huge learning

She holds a meeting every month with those who come to the Percy Street centre to see what activities they would like to pursue. Their latest project has been an art exhibition, the result of running regular art classes at the centre. The Art of Wellbeing exhibition opened at the Marlborough Art Society’s High Street gallery on Monday and runs through to Sunday. “There are paintings, pottery, photography and crafts – a kaleidoscope of colours. “We’ve been fortunate to have the help of local artist Caroline della Porta who has helped some of the exhibitors and curated the exhibition for us. “There are 77 works in all media from the Marlborough creative community to support Mental Health Awareness week.”

Jamie arbuckle There is a sense of urgency in the community. I will lead a council that has open meetings and gives the public time before every Committee Meeting to share concerns and ideas. It is our responsibility to ensure a future for our children and grandchildren in Marlborough. A vote for Jamie for Mayor ensures meaningful decisive action to make that happen.

John Leggett

The council predicts that the gross debt will balloon to a staggering $255 million in three years. Even at currently low rates, the interest will be over $1million. Per month! And each ratepayer will be responsible for it. That’s why the rates keep steadily increasing and it has to stop. People on fixed incomes or starting out with young families can’t afford to keep paying the ever-increasing demands. The council should stick to its core purpose of managing the infrastructure

for the people of Marlborough and do it well. We should be able to enjoy our district and our properties without increasing consent costs and restrictions. I’ll see that this happens. We’ll attract new business and people to our district thereby increasing our revenue base allowing us to improve Marlborough as we can afford it. I’ll be working from 7 am to 7 pm. If you have a problem; call me.

Like so many who call Marlborough home, I’m passionate about our region, our future, our stunning natural environment and our diverse, vibrant economy. As Mayor, I’m driven by the desire to ensure that Marlborough’s success stories so far are enhanced and built on in a sustainable manner for our future generations. To do so requires a long-term vision that clearly reflects, respects and embraces the views of the wider community, and addresses issues we all face in the future such as climate challenges. Achieving this vision can’t be done without robust public engagement,

informed debate and collective decision-making. These elements remain the highest priority for me in ensuring Council’s governance serves Marlborough positively, fairly, with integrity, and to its full potential. Representing our community and Council as Mayor requires exemplary governance, integrity and professionalism. During my current term as Mayor and previous two terms as Councillor, I have unfailingly demonstrated that I stand true to those attributes and that I am someone who Marlburians can continue to trust as Mayor.

I consider it a great honour and privilege to have served the people of Marlborough as a District Councillor. Marlborough is a province of great potential, yet still small enough to care about our citizens and their aspirations and concerns. With common-sense, wisdom and careful stewardship we can make it a place for young families across the board to our seniors. My interests include Justice of Peace, Musical Theatre, Alzheimers Foundation, Garden Marlborough, grandchildren, family and friends. I am passionate about Marlborough

being open to progress, being user friendly for all, while being mindful of escalating rate demands. My strength on Council is working for the senior folk of the community and having a voice for those who are not able to speak for themselves, making Marlborough accessible to all, while also supporting youth and younger ratepayers. Peter Chapman #1 for Council Promising nil rates rises is at best misleading and at worst untruthful. I am NOT going to promise what I cannot deliver. I’m only one vote. It’s a democracy. My theme is simple: - “Common Sense and Core Business” Common sense is not a bus shelter with a hole in the roof, it is not cycleway curbing on Eltham Rd, it is not “sharrows” on Beaver Rd encouraging small kids to share the road with cars and it is not planning to build a pyrolysis plant adjacent to a residential area. The list is long….

Core business is providing clean drinking water, stormwater, sewerage and refuse collection. It’s about parks & reserves, footpaths and roads. It’s about providing facilities for the disabled and elderly. Our problem is not rising rates. It is the lack of population growth over which to spread the load. No-ones been honest enough to tell you that. The figures are available to all candidates in the Councils Pre Election Report. It is common sense!

Vote

I have lived in Blenheim 38 of my 48 years and have enjoyed everything Marlborough has to offer. Through involvement with various sports, in numerous roles, together with 20 years of business ownership and management. I have developed a wide range of skills and attributes that would be beneficial as a Councillor. In 2013 I semi retired from our business Croads, to create more time for family and recreation. Since then I have been working as a business mentor on contract to a 70

strong group of companies nationwide. My work allows flexibility, which affords the time to give back to the community that has given so much to my family and I. My focus is providing the core services of Council while prioritising resources to where it is most needed. A vote for me will ensure my individual commitment to a group effort, as I understand that this is what makes a team work, a business work and a society work.

Gerry roodakker

My grandparents came to Blenheim in the 1890’s, my wife and I were both born here and this has always remained our family’s home town. I am very passionate about Marlborough and have enjoyed my one term on Council. I have been Chair of the Annual and Long Term Plan Committees. My many years experience as a Chartered Accountant and various Financial Governance roles in Business, Sports, Church and Service Clubs, have given me a good background for contributing to Council. Over a long career in Chartered Accountancy I have served on many Company boards including terms as finance director of

both New Zealand Rugby and Highlanders Rugby Boards. I believe strongly in best practice financial governance and cannot abide waste or unnecessary expenditure. Around Board or Council tables I believe in solid debate and then collective responsibility once democratic decisions are reached. I want to ensure Council funds are used wisely and rates are levied fairly. I know how important our people, facilities and environment are to keep Marlborough a great place to live, work and play. If we don’t look after our precious environment well and serve the needs of all people in Marlborough we are letting our community down.

CARMEN GIMPL I’m running for council because I want to see the Marlborough Sounds be a great place for us all to live in - now and in the future. Marlborough can be prosperous and sustainable. To make it that way I will promote: • Sustainable economic growth in diverse industries; • Leadership on reducing, recycling and managing waste; • Environmental protection to maximise soil, air and water quality; • Healthy, active communities with roads that allow for bikes and mobility scooters;

My husband and I have three daughters and own and operate Smiths Farm Holiday Park (which we built from scratch starting in 1997). I grew up on a dairy farm and after attending Linkwater School, Marlborough Girls’ College and Canterbury University, I travelled and worked overseas before coming home and becoming an officer in the NZ Army. I have volunteered on many tourism, school and community committees and remain active on several of these as well as the Link Pathway Trust, Destination Marlborough and HAPNZ. I aspire to the values of integrity,

• Well insulated and energy efficient housing; • Resilient infrastructure that will cope with extreme weather events and earthquakes; • Responsible spending and affordable rates. I live in Waikawa and am a trustee for Picton Little Theatre, Bike Walk Marlborough and previously QC College. I’ve been a Chartered Accountant and have over two decades of senior management experience. I am committed to the community and I will listen to you. The MDC collective controls 1.7 billion of your assets and spends 150 million of your funds each year, I have the skills and governance experience to look after these assets and spend. Council must listen to communities’ needs and where money is spent on facilities, it is in line with communities’ aspirations. ODDIE

I am the 6th generation, managing our Northbank farm in our family since 1851 Living in Renwick, I also know that the needs of our small townships within Marlborough need to be taken into account at the decision making level. I’ve studied for a Diploma in Agribusiness Management and want to bring sensible business and sustainable management skills to Marlborough’s planning and governance. Since 2015, I’ve been on the Council Rural Advisory Group as the Federated Farmers representative. Standing for Council is a continuation of my commitment to our community.

Council needs to focus on a budget of core services with logical priorities. So, I’m advocating for a policy of limiting annual rate rises to the Consumer Price Index. As the youngest candidate as well as a new father, I have the most at stake ensuring Marlborough has a prosperous future. It is the right time to start the transition of Marlborough’s governance to the next generation. I want to be part of the team, so that I can learn from their experience and knowledge. A vote for Scott Adams is a vote for a much needed new face and voice on Council.

NadiNe Taylor As a Councillor for the Sounds Ward for the past three years, I’ve been actively engaged in Council’s strategic planning and decision making. It’s been a busy term and I’ve enjoyed it because I care about Marlborough – the people, land, and the sea. As a local business owner who is connected to my community I’ve brought a common-sense practical approach to the Council table. I’ve been a consistent advocate for genuine community consultation, fair process, financial prudence, and political responsibility. My commitment to voters is to continue to work for the good of all

Marlborough and to be a strong voice for Picton, Havelock, Rai Valley and Sounds residents. There’s plenty more work to be done, including; increasing our leadership on climate change issues; restoring the health of our Marlborough Sounds waterways; improving our rural road maintenance management; reviewing and updating our Freedom Camping bylaws; the ongoing urban development of our small townships and public spaces; and as an experienced proven Councillor who is approachable and accessible, I’ll work for you, representing you with integrity, energy and enthusiasm. Age 40, Happily married to Jamie, with four children. I am passionate about our community, what it stands for and where we are heading in the future. I want to see our community grow and be a region we can all be proud of. Marlborough is a special place with so many opportunities. Developing issues in our ward are, condition of our roads, drinking water quality and the need for water storage to help in drought conditions. I want to work for you with Council to resolve these. I am eager to see the Small Townships Programme continue and

grow so we all prosper. I was disappointed by Councils decision to increase Cemetery fees and charges. Burial and Ashes beam plots have more than doubled in cost. In the Ward Cemetery the increase was $1939 dollars per burial plot. We need better consultation on important issues. Marlborough is my home and I live in Renwick and I’m raising my children in this great environment and community. I am approachable and a great listener, I will take constituents issues back to Council. I would appreciate your support to be your voice on council.

2019 Local elections wairau - awatere ward (3)for MDC CYNTHIA BROOKS Your Voice on Council In seeking re-election to Council for a third term, I pledge to continue working for a Marlborough in which everyone feels valued and has in me a positive “can do” listening ear – a channel through which they can meaningfully engage with Council staff, policies and processes. I look forward to contributing to the kind of Council Marlburians deserve - one that is hardworking, bold, progressive and responsive - balancing community need against the prudent spend of ratepayer’s money, managing the health of our fragile environment, without which we can achieve nothing.

GERALD HOPE There are a number of challenges ahead so it is important that the current culture, leadership and collective wisdom around the table remains, whilst new councillors find their feet. Specifically I pledge to see the: Renwick Water Supply upgrade and Wine Cycle trail completed; new Marlborough Library Gallery open; Small Townships plans progressed; senior housing and housing strategy work progressed; continuation of post earthquake recovery on the East Coast; supporting community initiatives such as the Flaxbourne Heritage Centre and Awatere Early Childhood Learning Centre.

I offer extensive council experience and understanding of what makes small communities tick. Only recently elected when the devastating Kaikoura earthquake struck 14 November 2016, I participated in many meetings in Seddon and Ward, listening to your concerns and working out what was needed to support your communities. Progress has been made. Broken water systems fixed, roads and bridges repaired, Seddon War Memorial upgraded, the fantastic Awatere Memorial Hall completed, Ward Hall upgrade underway, and planning for the new

Flaxbourne Heritage Centre. Other areas of Wairau and Awatere have not been forgotten. If called I’ve responded to the issues that matter to you – from Wairau Valley to Rarangi, Molesworth to Seaview. Close to home, Renwick is looking forward to a new secure safe water supply, and community planning is underway to make the village a smart small town. A new playground and dog park are completed – facilities ideal for families and senior residents. My commitment is to continue representing your best interests at Council – you can rely on me as a man of my word.

Francis Maher “Each generation leaves a legacy for the future. We need to make sure ours is a positive one”. Francis has a reputation for progressive, level-headed, down-to-earth community leadership. He is known for his ability to “get things done”. In earlier terms on Council he led or was closely associated with many of Marlborough’s more notable developments. These include the Southern Valleys Irrigation Scheme, The Giesen Sports and Events Centre, Renwick and Grovetown sewerage schemes and the swimming

pool complex. Now after a six year break away from Council Francis is refreshed, recharged and ready to resume energetically representing the interests of the Wairau and Awatere people. He sees with clarity the unprecedented challenges ahead that impact the welfare of each and every member of our community. Francis has a very real commitment to social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Marlborough and now Renwick has been my home for the greater part of my life. My wife Christine (Brown) is a Marlburian. We love this place – our history, our people, our environment. My work experience has been in industries related to commerce, fishing, equipment hire and tourism. I have also been involved and supportive of charity and service based organisations. For the last 20 years we have owned and managed our own family business interests. From these businesses and community experiences I have further

developed financial, communication, and negotiating skills that I consider would be of value when representing the Wairau Awatere ward and Council. The best outcomes are created by researching and listening, then connecting and understanding what is best for regional development (social & financial) and our environment and the challenges that are ahead for all of us. I clearly understand that my key role is to represent you, keeping you informed. I welcome the opportunity to do more, making a difference and being a strong, positive advocate.

Sexual and gender identity in adolescence By Robyn McGill Moving from childhood to being an adult through adolescence can be an exciting but also difficult as young people try to sort out how and where they fit in the world. It is quite normal for a young person to question their sexual and gender identity and for this exploration to happen in a safe and supportive environment is important. If whanau and care-givers struggle with talking about this perhaps a special aunt or uncle, a grandparent, a

well-liked teacher, a school counsellor or other mental health professional can help. It is important to have room for caring and loving within the whanau. If a young person feels judged and rejected they will isolate themselves, feel unable to talk with others and this is when mental health difficulties can arise - like being overly anxious and depressed and might include cutting and suicidal thoughts. It is estimated that 1 in 10 people may be Lesbian, Gay,

Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, and questioning and people choose to identify in a number of different ways. If you want to talk more School Counsellors are a great place to start. They are very experienced in talking with young people and their whanau. For many years my mahi has included counselling LGBTIQ+ youth and their whanau and I am also available for support. Robyn McGill is a MNZAC registered counsellor.

Jacinta newport - nMDHB canDiDate My name is Jacinta Newport. I have lived in the Nelson region for 31 years. I am married to Steve and we have two adult children. I have worked as a registered nurse at Nelson Public Hospital following graduation, spent several years working in Intensive Care in Waikato Hospital, then on my return to Nelson I spent many years working in Primary Health, and also worked as a school nurse at Nelson Girls and an RN at Manuka Street Hospital. I have a post graduate diploma in Primary Health and here lies my passion. Over the past seven years I have worked in the Outback of Australia working in many remote communities and more recently I have worked on the Westcoast of the South Island as a Rural Nurse Specialist. My background which is diverse when it comes to my nursing career will enable

me to easily discuss healthcare provision issues and access, especially in regards to those people in Nelson and Marlborough that confront barriers. My interest as a sub-specialty within Primary Health is Chronic Pain and Disability. I hear from and about many people who struggle to navigate the health system to access timely appointments and appropriate individualised care for chronic disease, especially pain. I believe in nurse led clinics that will have nurses at the helm to address the current service deficit. People are waiting for appointments, and chronic disease if not addressed early creates a burden on already overstretched resources. Hence my belief that skilled nurses can fill the gap to improve the delivery of much needed healthcare.

Milestone for Mr Green It’s no small feat for a business to be celebrating 25 years and for Brian and Dawn Milne who own Mr Green Marlborough, they say it comes down to having a business model they believe in and know works. The Mr Green franchise-based company was first established in Wellington in 1992. The franchise was soon brought to Marlborough which is where Brian and Dawn first came in contact with the company. The couple had previously been beef and sheep farming but when they started a family they decided it was time to move to Blenheim for a change of lifestyle. Two years later the opportunity to take on a Mr Green lawnmowing round became available which appealed to Brian who loved being outdoors. “The outdoors became my office and it fit in with our family commitments,” he says. Back then, they were one of six operating in the region. Then in 2011 another great opportunity arose, but this time it was the purchase of the regional franchise. “It was great timing and we both agreed that Mr Green had potential to become a one-stop shop for home services, both inside and out,” they say. The couple met with a Mr Green cleaning regional owner from the North Island and after much thought, they decided in 2013 to launch the cleaning in Marlborough. “Within days of our first Mr Green cleaning advertisement going into the 2013 phonebook we had our first phonecall. It just grew and grew from there,” Dawn says. The first cleaning franchise sold that year, two more the following year and today, there are now five operating across the Marlborough region. What has proven to be their point of difference is that all franchisees start out with a strong support structure in place to help them become successful.

“We clean to a very high standard… no cutting corners and we pay attention to detail. “Each of our franchisees are passionate about their work and treat each home as they would their own,” Dawn says. When it comes to both the lawnmowing and cleaning, Mr Green Marlborough believes no job is too big or too small. “Particularly large jobs because we can work as a team,” Brian and Dawn say. Since taking over Brian and Dawn have added eight new franchises in Marlborough, effectively supporting locals to become business owners themselves. “The benefits of belonging to a franchise is having people in the same business and being there for support. This not only includes for advice seeking, but also in case of health issues… everyone looks

David Plant - Mr Green lawn mowing/garden care Want to know

more about us?

David Plant loves working in the outdoors. For many years he was a local bricklayer with a busy career in the building industry but due to health reasons he decided on a change of pace. A friend of his was a franchisee for Mr Green Marlborough and wanted a change himself so David took over his business around eight years ago. “After working for myself for so long I knew I wanted something that was still reasonably physical, and the Mr Green lawn mowing/garden care franchise really suited to me. “I began with one ride-on mower and one push mower and set about building up the business. “My daughter, wife and now my grandson Brandon are involved… it’s very much a family business,” he says. David has clients in both light commercial and residential and no matter what size the property is, he says a quality finish is most important. “I look at them as my own backyards. When we walk away we want the client to be happy so we always strive to do a good job. “It’s a pleasure to work within the Mr Green franchise,” he says. Mr Green franchisee David Plant and his grandson Brandon Gardiner.

Astra prepares for nationals By Celeste Alexander Blen hei m g y m na st , 17-year-old Astra Ticehurst is heading to Auckland in a week’s time to compete at the 2019 New Zealand Gymnastics Championships, which run from October 2-5. She was the only Blenheim gymnast selected for the Top-of-The-South team which will be competing against the country’s best. This team covers the Marlborough, Nelson and Greymouth regions and for Astra, it’s her fourth time qualifying. “I’m excited,” she says. “I had actually left this year but returned over a month ago, so it’s cool to be going to the nationals with the team,” she says. Astra has been training in gymnastics since the age of two as her mother is a coach. In her younger years she says she broke

Croquet Club keen to let you have a go By Bill McElhinney Croquet is not a game for old people, recent croquet convert Barb Guillemot says. The New Zealand croquet champion is 22 years old! Barb got talked into trying croquet by her sister, Jean Zaludek, who recently returned to Blenheim after 47 years in the United States. Her neighbour, Allan Hutton, is the president of the Blenheim Croquet Club and he eventually talked Jean into having a go. Now shes a keen player. Jean talked me into trying croquet, and I love it, Barb says. Mind you, it’s not as easy as it looks! The Blenheim Croquet Club at Pollard is holding an open day at 1pm on Sunday at their Pollard Park greens. They mostly play golf croquet, a fun Allan Hutton and Barb Guillemot are looking forward to shorter form of the game that after a helping budding croquet players have a go at the Pollard few minutes of tuition can be played Park croquet greens next Sunday from 1pm.

by all. You don’t need any equipment as we have mallets people can use. Just wear soft-soled shoes,€ Barb says. It’s not too serious and you can have a laugh. Just turn up with a good attitude and a smile and we’ll take care of the rest. It’s not too strenuous.
