Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Favourable weather conditions and skilled hard work provided the successful result the rural fire crews were looking for on Wednesday. At 1.30am principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara was alerted to the blaze near the Sixteen Valley, off SH1; one valley over from Cloudy Bay Business Park. It was spotted by a passing truck driver. Initially an urban response, the job became one for the rural crews, with access proving difficult. “And we were helped enormously by the local knowledge of farmers Dave Western and Paul Kemp,� said Richard, who both assisted the fire crews throughout the night. Investigations to determine the cause of the fire are ongoing. The blaze reached a two-kilometre perimeter, spreading across nearly eight hectares of grass and scrub. Continued on page 2
