Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Favourable weather conditions and skilled hard work provided the successful result the rural fire crews were looking for on Wednesday. At 1.30am principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara was alerted to the blaze near the Sixteen Valley, off SH1; one valley over from Cloudy Bay Business Park. It was spotted by a passing truck driver. Initially an urban response, the job became one for the rural crews, with access proving difficult. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And we were helped enormously by the local knowledge of farmers Dave Western and Paul Kemp,â&#x20AC;? said Richard, who both assisted the fire crews throughout the night. Investigations to determine the cause of the fire are ongoing. The blaze reached a two-kilometre perimeter, spreading across nearly eight hectares of grass and scrub. Continued on page 2

Fish farms gain approval New Zealand King Salmon has won final approval to build four new fish farms in the Marlborough Sound. The Environmental Protection Authority yesterday released the final decision of its board of inquiry, which gives King Salmon consent to build four of the nine farms it applied for. These are at Ngamahau in Tory Channel, Waitata and Richmond in Pelorus Sound and Papatua in Port Gore. However, the Environmental Defence Society said it would appeal the decision to the High Court because of legal issues.

Sun owners buy W’gton newspapers inbrief The Sun

The owners of the Blenheim Sun, Les and Katrina Whiteside, have expanded their newspaper interests to Wellington. They have bought four weekly community newspapers – the Independent Herald, Cook Strait News, Porirua News and Wainuiomata News. “We are thrilled to be expanding and look forward to this exciting challenge with the support of our dedicated staff both here and Wellington,” Mr Whiteside said. The newspapers have been purchased from APN NZ Media which owns the New Zealand Herald. Effective April 2, Mr Whiteside said most of the 15 staff on the four

newspapers will be retained. The newspapers will trade under the name Wellington Suburban Newspapers Limited. Announcing the sale, APN NZ Media chief executive Martin Simons said it was pleasing the newspapers were being sold as a going concern to successful publishers. “The titles have strong relationships with their suburban communities and we hope the new owners can continue to provide this service for many years to come.” The Whitesides have a long involvement with newspaper publishing and more than 25 years experience owning community newspapers.

The idea was first muted five years, and on Tuesday it will open its doors for the first time, on Clifford St at the old Anglican Church. With additional facilities behind the church, the centre is licensed to accommodate up to 30 preschool children. Brigid Hammond and Makaela Richmond both live just out of Seddon with their young families. This centre provides them flexibility with their time, social interaction for their children, and an economical alternative to driving into Blenheim for preschool services. Brigid’s eldest child Rupert, three years-old, will attend the centre two mornings each week, as will Makaela’s child Tom, also three years-old. “The big thing for us is the social interaction,” said Brigid, as the friends they make at the centre will continue on with them to Seddon School. “Rupert is almost four, so he needs more than me. We would have had to go into town, and that’s just not as practical.” “We are so lucky to have something like this,” said Brigid. “The committee is amazing, the teachers running

The stunning Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds has officially become the 21st Great Ride on the Nga Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trail. The 70 km mountain biking track, which runs from historic Ship Cove to Anakiwa, has been stated as offering some of the best views over the Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds. “This official status as one of New Zealand’s Great Rides helps raise the profile of the trail even further and is a boost for Marlborough and the top of the South Island tourism industries,” said Minister of Conservation Nick Smith yesterday.

The range of ethnic communities in Marlborough will be out in large numbers for the Marlborough Migrant Festival in Pollard Park, Blenheim, tomorrow. Cultural groups will provide a wide range of entertainment as well as food, activities for children and craft stalls. Information stalls will also be available. The festival will be held from 11am to 4pm.

Award for firm Winstanley Kerridge, a Blenheim accounting firm that switched over to cloud-based computing software Xero last year, was named Partner of the Year at the annual Xero conference last Friday. The firm changed over to Xero in April, and has since switched more of its clients over to the system than any other firm that uses the software. Building consents ‘New Zealand home-building consents fell last month as a drop in approvals for apartments offset gains for other types of dwellings. Auckland and Canterbury continued to account for more than half of all consents. However, the trend for the number of new houses consented has risen 50 percent since March 2011, Statistics New Zealand said yesterday.

Chris Tobin Concrete started to be poured yesterday for the the new Speight’s Ale House which is being built on Middle Renwick Road in Springlands. Owner/operator John Derry said

building consent had been issued earlier in the week and work on the foundations commenced yesterday. “There’s been lots of hoops to jump through; it’s been two years and nice to see it at this stage,” Mr Derry said.

The building contractor for the project is Hamish Ryan Construction which has sub-let the foundation contract to T&D Construction. It is the first major commerical building project for Hamish Ryan who worked in a Blenheim partnership for eight years before deciding to branch out on his own recently. “I was initially going to move but a change of circumstances has seen me staying and developing a new brand,” he said. The company is concentrating on commerical building and high-end residential building. Mr Derry said six to eight weeks would be spent on the foundation work for the 450sqm ale house. The first stage is expected to be completed in June after which Lion New Zealand will come in to undertake a fit-out of the building. The ale house has been designed by ArtHouse Architecture of Nelson. Mr Derry said a total of 40 staff would be employed at the ale house and a head chef had just been appointed. “A strong emaphasis at the ale house will be placed on dining and family dining in particular,” he said.

New boss at law centre Kat Duggan Marlborough’s Community Law Centre has this week welcomed a new member to their team, Raewyn Tretheway, who will be taking over as manager. Having just arrived on Friday, Raewyn will be taking on a role as team leader, and manager at the centre, which provides free legal advice to the public. Raewyn says a lot of people are unaware of what they centre does, and she has a lot of vision to promote and grow the centre within the community. “I need to promote the centre more to the community, we have to ensure that Blenheim keeps what they’ve got. We need the community and I think the community needs the

Community Law Centre.” In order to do this, Raewyn says she will essentially be knocking on doors of local community

groups and schools, to tell people about what they do, and to find out what the community needs from the centre. Raewyn, who has qualifications in both law and psychology, says the centre prides itself on its mediation services, and wants to encourage the public to use them. She also has plans to get a practicing certificate, so that she can assist with some lower cases of legal aid. “We don’t want anyone to miss out on services because they can’t afford it,” she said. Raewyn brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the community, having had a number of roles throughout her career, taking her as far away as Papua New Guinea.

Kat Duggan Conservation Kids New Zealand has organised two adventures in and around the Queen Charlotte Sound this Sunday, March 3, as part of national Seaweek. The first event, the Rocky Shore Adventure, will go from 9am until 10.30am, and is and opportunity for the public to learn about the sea, and the sea creatures living on the foreshore. The cost of Rocky Shore Adventure will be a gold coin donation; and it will start at the Dolphin Watch & Nature Tours Office on the Picton waterfront, heading to Shelly Bay to explore sea creatures living on the beach. The second event, the Mini Marine Biologist Tour, is aimed at teenagers and parents, and will consist of an afternoon with Dolphins, Seals and other marine life. Participants in the tour, which will go from 1.30pm until 4.30pm, will also have the chance to assist a marine biologist with her current dolphin research. Bookings are essential for the tour, which has limited spaces, and will be at a special price of $45. Organisers are reminding those interested to bring their sunhats and sunscreen as both events will be outdoors. Redwood Village Lifestyle Care & Village The Redwood Village care home has been in the Marlborough community for 25 years, and provides a range of services, catering for both young people, who may be affected by chronic conditions and senior residents of the community. The village prides itself on being a part of its surrounding community, with its large gardens providing a nice peaceful setting. Mr Ross says the village tries to provide continuity for residents, and aims to keep residents involved with their community, and clubs, and has a recreational team dedicated to taking residents out, and keeping them active

within Marlborough. “It’s a change from the old style where people used to come to these places and sort of close the world off, whereas now it’s sort of looking outward, we aim to keep people involved in the community,” Mr Ross said. The four sections of the home, the hospital, rest home, assisted living suites, and independent living villas mean that there is a choice for residents over how much care they need. Residents are able to move to different sections of the village as their needs change, depending on whether they need more or less assistance.

Redwood Lifestyle Care & Village have recently welcomed a new clinical manager, Brian Ross, who is enthusiastic about his new role, and future with the village. Having previously worked at the Redwood Village as a registered nurse, Mr Ross has come back to the home, after working in the Marlborough community for 34 years. His role have included charge nurse of the Wairau Hospital rehab assessment ward, employment support for people with disabilities, and he has also

been manager of health care New Zealand, which provides home care support services, for the last 10 years. He has teamed up with Redwood Lifestyle Care & Village Facility Manager, Wendy Nicholson, who has been at the home for 17 years. The two have a combined experience of about 60 years in the health care sector. Having just passed an external certification audit with flying colours, Redwood Lifestyle Care & Village prides itself on its quality of service, and high training.

The Village, which is a part of the Oceania group, has 57 other sites throughout New Zealand. It works closely with the District Health Board to put together individual plans for residents, which make it possible to them to keep the same GP, dieticians, and physio therapists, among others.

The Oceania group has a large training plan for staff members, to ensure Redwood Lifestyle Care & Village’s 68 staff members are trained to the highest standard. The Redwood Lifestyle and Care Village is welcoming new residents, and aims to work with people to enhance their lifestyle, which is what the village prides itself on.

Story and photos by Annabelle Latz Riding a bucking beast is a rush, and bloody good fun. That is according to Paddy Redwood, who took top honours in the division two steer/bull ride at the Junction Hotel Tua Marina Rodeo and Vintage Machinery Field Day last Sunday. The 24 year-old horse trainer and breaker from Seddon has been dipping his boot into the sport for four seasons now. Despite his clock making eight seconds on Sunday, and not for the first time, Paddy admitted he won’t be making a habit of this type of riding. “I’m not really a successful bull rider, realistically.” The nature of his horse business lends to a natural ability in the rodeo ring. “It’s very similar muscles, coordination, and the balance is quite similar in some respects.” “But you don’t have a saddle, it feels like

there is nothing in front of you on a steer or bull. It’s just a big neck.” “When you’re younger, rodeo is great. But I need my body for my work.” The rush of the rodeo ride is not a daily experience Paddy aims for when working with young horses. “It’s completely different. I try not to have any mad rushes with the horses. I want it as uneventful as possible.” Unlike the agenda Paddy has with his horse work, the bull riding he plays more by ear. He simply focuses on one spot between the shoulder blades, and tries to get back to the ‘start’ position after each buck. “I say I’m just going to hang on, I want to be strapped on as tight as possible.” Paddy has never ridden broncs. “But I’ve ridden a few bucking horses,” he said. He loved riding at Tua Marina last weekend, and the non-points rodeo meant he

could have a spin in the open bull class too. “I got smoked. It was all over in two and a half seconds. It was too much bull to be honest.” His horse work is keeping him busy, and he is being well supported by locals who are bringing young stock to his skillful aid. Paddy is looking forward to riding his grey gelding Kitset at Flaxbourne A&P Show on March 24. “It’s great to support your local show,” he said.

The bird-bangers have been pulled out into daylight for another harvest. After a few months out of sight, chances are they might need a bit of maintenance. That is the message from deputy principal rural fire officer John Foley. Mark and Leanne Hodges grow chardonnay and sauvignon blanc for Giesen Wine on Rapaura Rd. Most of the year their three bird-bangers are housed in a shipping container, on their property. When harvest season rolls around, their birdbangers are rolled out. Before they are set up, there is a thorough maintenance check. The gas supply lines can get brittle over time, and the chambers are checked for bird nests. Fresh batteries are put in them.

“We don’t just turn them on and leave them,” said Mark. Each day they are checked; for leaks, or movement of position. Gas consumption is also monitored. The bird-bangers are rotated every two weeks, and Leanne said another important job is to make sure vegetation and grass levels are minimised around the tripod. “It’s just keeping the area clear.” Local rural stockists provide people to service bird-bangers. John Foley said the current very hot and dry conditions means huge fire risk. And when winds pick up again, the risk of fire will be even greater. Monitoring gas pipes, tightness of clamps, stability, and growth of surrounding vegetation is important. “It’s a darn site cheaper than having a fire,” he said.

To save some cash on your project visit second hand shops and garage sales in your area to hunt for lowpriced vintage teacups. Or ask relatives for unwanted pieces from their own china cabinets for an added personal touch.

Ingredients: Preheat oven to 170deg 125g butter celcius. 1 cup brown sugar Place patty cups in a 12 1/2 cup white sugar muffin tin. 3 eggs Cream butter and 2 1/2 cups flour sugar. 1 tsp vanilla Add eggs, one essence by one, with 1/2 cup a little flour. plain Mix in yoghurt vanilla and 1/4 cup yoghurt. cocoa Fold in dry in2 tsps baking gredients and powder zucchini. 1 tsp cinnamon Don’t over mix. 1/2 tsp mixed spice Spoon into cups and 1/2 tsp salt dot with choc drops. 3 cups grated zucchini Bake for 12-15 mins. 1/2-1 cup of choc drops When cool, ice with chocolate icing chocolate icing.

Vintage boats at Lake Rotoiti Vintage boats are heading for their annual weekend of glory at Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park on this weekend, for the 14th NZ Antique and Classic Boatshow. Founder and organiser Pete Rainey said the show has carved a niche in the national boating calendar and in the

hearts of boat owners. “Owning a classic boat, whether it’s an early Hamilton jet, a cedar kayak or a new steam boat built to traditional design is inevitably a labour of love,” he said. “Owners really relish the opportunity not only to show off their own boat but to relive the complex restorations with

others who have taken the same timeintensive trip.” The programme is for displays on land in the morning, with activities and races on the lake from 1pm both days. Judging will take place on Saturday, ahead of an evening awards ceremony at the Alpine Lodge.

Blues coach Sir John Kirwan must be pleased and speculation has been aired that the influence of the other knight, Sir Graham Henry, a technical advisor for the Blues, was evident in their match against the Highlanders. Between the two of them there’s quite a bit of rugby nous. Have the Crusaders enough to counter this

rugby brains trust? We don’t have long to wait for the answer. Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder has confirmed this season will be a make or break one for him at the helm of the once mighty Christchurch-based franchise. Not having Richie McCaw in the line-up is a definite weakness. And for this evening’s match, through force of cirumstance due to Zac Guildford’s struggles with the bottle, the widely acknowledged best fullback in the world Israel Dagg has to go on the wing. That’s a shame and a waste. Tom Taylor will be the man at the back instead of Dagg.

I was impressed with Taylor’s performance at the start of last season when he filled the boots of Dan Carter at first five-eighths. He went off a bit after that and was placed into the mid-field for a period although at the end of the season he had a late call-up as a replacement for the All Blacks on their tour of Britain. He’ll be watched this evening to see if he has made any progress from last season – as will Blackadder. Shame to see Ricki Herbert pull the pin on his career as coach of the Phoenix. He couldn’t complain. Had he been a coach of a similar outfit in a foreign competition he would have

been shown the door some time ago. I didn’t like the comment of one columnist on Herbert’s departure. This ‘expert’ said that while Herbert was a good man, he had the charisma of a poached fish. Below the belt that one.

Fighting fit and loving it Story by Annabelle Latz, It involved one and half minutes of being smacked in the face. And it felt like eternity. But for Fergus Were, it was his first ever round of competition fighting in Muay Thai Kickboxing. So it was all exciting and new. And to top it off, he came out the winner. Not a bad start. And he is Marlborough’s first competitor to stamp his mark on the sport. The Marlborough club involves between 20 and 30 members, who meet at the Renwick Community Hall twice a week for two-hour training sessions. Fergus, 21 years-old, said the following two rounds of his inaugural competition, at the ‘Capital Punishment 20’ in Wellington organised by the Wellington Muay Thai Kickboxing club, were much better. He found his groove, and his fitness level proved superior to his opponent. “Once you get your control back, the adrenalin keeps you going.” Fergus took up the sport a year ago when he was living in Wellington, and was pleased there was a club here too when he moved back recently. Lisa Hancock said the club here is getting stronger all the time. The Renwick Kindergarten teacher took up the sport a year and a half ago, and loves going to all the competitions to support the locals. “I’m really involved. We all really enjoy the sport, it’s a fitness sport.” Fergus said this martial art is slightly different from kick boxing, as they use all eight points of contact. Participants use elbows, can make

Rowing coach appointed Rowing New Zealand has appointed Australian coach Noel Donaldson to head their men's sweep oar programme. Donaldson will oversee the programme which includes the unbeaten London Olympic gold medallist men's pair of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray, in a four-year plan aiming at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The 57-year-old Donaldson recently worked as elite development manager in Australia after initially making his name

as coach of the Australian "Oarsome Foursome" that won back-to-back golds in Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 in the men's coxless fours. He also guided the men's pair to a bronze medal in Sydney 2000 before helping Australia gain one gold, one silver and one bronze medal as head coach at Athens 2004. Donaldson was also high performance director from 2004 to 2008 for Rowing Australia. Donaldson's appointment comes after a

change in coaching structure for Rowing New Zealand, with previous head coach Dick Tonks switching roles to head the women's programme, while Calvin Ferguson is in charge of the men's sculling programme. Donaldson will arrive in New Zealand next week during selection trials at Lake Karapiro for the New Zealand squad to contest the first World Cup regatta of the year to be held in Sydney from March 22-24.
