Farmers reunion

By Celeste Alexander

It’s been over 50 years since local women, Maree Chambers and Fay Cresswell, first stepped foot into their new jobs at The Farmers’ Co-operative store in Blenheim. They remember well the teal coloured, long sleeved nylon uniforms which were

buttoned through the front. Back then, it was located where the Health Hub is today on Queen Street, before it famously burned down in 1979. Decades on, groups of former staff members have been coming together for reunions to reconnect and recall past memories. Continued on page 2.

Friends and former workers of The Farmers Co-operative store in Blenheim, Maree Chambers and Fay Cresswell, have organised a reunion this Saturday for people who worked in the store prior to the 1979 fire. ABOVE: The store was located where the Health Hub is now.

Former staff to reunite Continued from page 1. This Saturday, just over 60 people will be attending a reunion organised by Maree and Fay, and will be for the staff who worked in the building prior to the fire. The idea to hold this reunion came to them when they were working in a Cambodian orphanage together. “We attended the last reunion which didn’t have many people from before the fire,” Maree says. “And at the end of it the organisers decided that would be their last reunion. “But then I got this idea to host a reunion specifically for staff who worked in the building prior to the fire, so we set out hunting everyone down,” she laughs. And hunting she did. Maree did not have a list of phone numbers to work from and had to do it “the old fashioned way”. Although, she says, Facebook did have a hand in helping to find former staff by searching their surnames and connecting with their family members. “I searched for one person and sent a message to their son, who then gave me their contact number,” Maree says. “Then I went door knocking with the addresses I had. There will be people I haven’t been able to find, so if anyone is reading this and wants to attend, please get in contact.” For Maree and Fay, this reunion will be a chance to share memories and stories from when “100 or so” people all worked under the one roof. “There were around 20 departments which all operated within the building,” Maree says. “There was everything from men’s and women’s wear, shoes, haberdashery, cosmetics, material, a hairdresser, a china department, home appliances and hardware, through a café, butcher and even

grocery department. “And out the back we had a grain store, stock agents, auctioneers and real estate. It was everything under one roof,” she says. “And everyone got on so well,” Fay adds. “We had over 100 staff who enjoyed working together.” Fay first decided she wanted to work at the Farmers Cooperative when delivering newspapers to the store’s retail manager. “I asked him if there was a job for me. He said yes as I was always

no computers, we had to use our brains. We had big adding and book-keeping machines and worked with carbon copies, as there were no photocopies. “And we thought we looked so smart wearing our uniforms,” Maree laughs. “Only the office staff wore them short in those days.” If anyone who worked at The Farmers Co-operative store prior to the fire in 1979 would like to contact Maree about the reunion, phone (03) 5786311.

Coronavirus fears

inbrief

The Sun

By Celeste Alexander

Since news broke last Friday of New Zealand’s first case of Coronavirus (Covid-19) in Auckland, and confirmation that two people from Nelson are in isolation and being monitored, the Sun has fielded calls from concerned parents from the local community. Their concerns were around what the region’s response would be, how they could best protect their children and elderly family members, and what action local services will take. “I dropped my children to school this morning (Monday) and asked the staff what their plan would be if Coronavirus came to Marlborough,” one father told the Sun. “But they didn’t have an answer for me. “I’m genuinely concerned because I have young children and naturally I want to protect them. It seems like there’s very little concern about this and no information being provided.” From the Medical Office of Health with the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service, Doctor Andrew Lindsay says his main message to the public is that there are simple steps to take to help stop the spread of diseases like Covid-19 and seasonal influenza, and that emergency response teams have been on alert to the threat of Coronavirus since January, and are responding “as planned”. “There are two people who were on the EK450 from Dubai-Bali-Auckland (arrived in Auckland on February 26) who are now in isolation for 14 days in Nelson. They are being monitored daily by the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service. “The two people are not showing symptoms of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and they are not suspected cases.

A night for ladies, dates and mates Mitre10 Mega Marlborough is hosting a special evening tomorrow titled ‘Ladies, Dates & Mates Night’. This “Mega” event runs from 6.309pm and will include instore discounts and specials, complimentary drinks and nibbles. Entry is by donation which will benefit the Life Flight Trust.

Skin clinic returns The Picton Skin Awareness Clinic is returning. Held in the Picton School Hall today between 3-7pm, this clinic exists to detect early signs of skin cancer. GPs and specialists will be available for skin check-ups, and, if needed, people can be referred for urgent treatment. Walk-ins are welcome, and donations appreciated but not necessary. Two people who were on the EK450 flight from Dubai-Bali-Auckland, arriving in New Zealand on February 26, are now in isolation for 14 days in Nelson and being monitored daily. Note: People in the photo are not those being monitored.

“To help prevent the spread take the following steps: • Avoid close contact with people with cold or flu-like illnesses • Cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues. Sneeze into the crook of your elbow if a tissue is not available • Wash hands for at least 20 seconds with water and soap and dry them thoroughly: Before eating or handling food, after using the toilet, after coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose or wiping children’s noses and after caring for sick people. “If you are in need of professional medical advice use the free, dedicated Healthline number - 0800 358 5453 which is free and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“People calling that line will be able to talk with a member of the National Telehealth Service and they have access to interpreters. “Most importantly if you have Covid-19 symptoms, have travelled overseas in the last month or have come into close contact with someone who has had the virus, or who is suspected to have it, stay at home and phone Healthline. “Before you go to a doctor, hospital, pharmacy, work, school, or to a place where you will come into contact with a lot of people – phone ahead for specialist advice. They will tell you what to do,” he says. Mayor Leggett urged employers in Marlborough to start thinking about their own contingency planning if the Coronavirus does

reach the region. “It’s important to appreciate how each part of the Marlborough economy might be affected should it arrive here. Some industries may be able to help others – we are all in this together,” he says. Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Firearm security By community constable Russ Smith

Last Friday a Toyota Hilux utility was stolen from a Blenheim address. Unfortunately the vehicle also had a .223 rifle and ammunition stored in it at the time. While the outcome was good, with Police locating the vehicle later the same day at a Christchurch address, and recovering the firearm and ammunition and arresting three people, it is still disappointing that despite everything that has happened around the Christchurch Mosque attacks, some people are still not taking firearms security seriously. While in this case it is gratifying that a 29-year-old man, a 36-yearold woman, and a 33-year-old woman are remanded in custody and will be appearing to face charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, burglary and unlawful possession of a firearm, amongst a raft of other charges they are already facing. This could have been a very different situation. If circumstances had been slightly different, there could easily have been another dangerous firearm and ammunition in the hands of criminals, creating a further risk for both the public

Russ Smith

and the police. If you are a licensed firearms holder and have firearms, please ALWAYS have them secured in accordance with the security precautions set out in the Arms Regulations 1992. The only time a firearm should be out of the required secure storage is when it is in your immediate and direct control. Please don’t leave any firearm insecure. Not only does this create a risk for everyone and potentially create a black-market for firearms, but in today’s political and policing climate subsequent to the events on March 15, 2019 in Christchurch, it makes it far more likely that you will be held to account for failing to secure your firearms.

Boeing Boeing set to be a ‘must-see’ By Aimee O’Hagan

“Sometimes you just want to go to the theatre, sit down, relax, and just forget about everything.” These are the words of Blenheim local, Rose Platenkamp, who is the director of ‘Boeing Boeing’ – a hilarious, fast-moving comedy set to be performed at Blenheim’s Boathouse Theatre from March 25 to April 4. Rehearsals are currently underway for the play, which is centred around a character named Bernard (played by Pete James). He’s a man who has “the perfect life”: a good job, financial security, and even an apartment in Paris. As well as this, Bernard has three fiances – Gloria (Nicole Furness) from America, Gabriella (PJ Muir) from Italy, and Gretchen (Kia King) from France. All three women are air hostesses; Bernard knows exactly when they’re flying into Paris, how long they will be staying, and when they’re leaving.

But one day, everything goes wrong. “You can expect that one’s having a delay, another person has bad weather so she has to fly back to Paris... And so they all come home at the same time,” Rose says. With help from housemaid Bertha (Kate Parker) and godson Robert (Jared Wadsworth), Bernard attempts to avoid chaos; aka, the women realising that they are not Bernard’s only fiance. In Rose’s opinion, Marlburians should come watch the play because it’s a “really good laugh”. “The way it’s directed is really fast-paced,” she says. “I’ve asked the actors to be very physical, high speed... To really get the timing right. “I find the rhythm of the play very important – it’s like a whirlwind.” “This play will make audiences feel really good.” Tickets for Boeing Boeing cost $27.50 to $37.50 and can be purchased online at https://premier.ticketek.co.nz/shows/show. aspx?sh=BOEING20.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street.

Q: What do you think of buy-now-pay-later schemes in comparison to credit cards, and which do you prefer?

Fred de Zwart Blenheim I don’t use buy-now-paylater schemes. I’ve heard of them but I just find it’s easier to use my credit card.

Rebecca Wheeler Blenheim I’ve never used buy-nowpay-later schemes but they sound really good - I’d love to try it.

Vicki Charles Blenheim I prefer credit cards because I’ve never used Afterpay, etc.

Filimoe’ulie Fotu-Moala Blenheim I think credit cards are a much easier way to go with paying it forward straight away. With Afterpay, it can get a little tempting to over spend on money you don’t have and trying to keep track of payments.

Olivia Cooke Blenheim I think that buy-now-paylater is just as bad as credit cards as you are spending money that you don’t necessarily have, meaning some people go into debt that they can’t get out of.

Exotic forests, a blight on the land! From 1878 sailing ships were able to sail to Blackball above Havelock in the Pelorus Sounds to collect sawn timber from the Brownlee saw mill. The timber was cut from native trees harvested from the local forests. In the latter half of the 1940’s when I lived in Havelock, the harbour was full of silt but once past Cullen’s Point boats could navigate freely. Now boats must stay in the channel until they reach Mahau Sound.

We've Got Solutions!

On a drive to Nelson recently the disastrous damage to hillsides is all too obvious with multiple tracks cut across the hills, logs dragged and opening up the surface of the soil and slash left behind, waiting for the next heavy rain to flood it all into the valley below. From there the rivers and streams carry it into the estuaries and sea. One reason for the slow recharge of the Wairau Plains aquafers is the river beds being clogged with silt, only briefly relieved after a reasonable flood. This is happening all over New Zealand, imagine the damage when the billion trees that are being added to the existing forests are harvested in 20 to 30 years. Most of the larger forests are owned by overseas interests, profits and carbon credits (The modern Kings new clothes) are siphoned offshore. Immeasurable cost to our environment, infrastructure and society can be laid at the door of exotic forestry. By all means plant native forests for conservation not milling. Can we afford to keep farming exotic forests? I don’t think so! Octogenarian. W h e n o n ly t h e b e s t W i l l d o !

Bragato Research winery opens By Frances Chin

The Bragato Research Institute's new research winery opened February 27. Situated on the NMIT campus, this winery will ensure that the region’s wine industry's technology remains cutting edge, with custom built fermentation tanks inside that are world-first prototypes.

The new research winery will house wine-making equipment and technologies. Research trials will be a large part of the winery’s tasks, with the facility’s technology allowing for “tightly controlled experimental conditions” in order to observe wines. “With wine industry exports now valued at $1.86 billion, BRI’s activities will support the ongoing sustainable growth of the industry through research and innovation” says MJ Loza, CEO of BRI. Another focus will be sustainability. The winery has been

Last Thursday the Bragato Research Institute (BRI)’s new research winery opened its doors to the Marlborough public. The Bragato Research Institute’s aim is “to provide leading-edge science, research and innovation.” It exists to ensure that New Zealand’s wine industry remains one of the most advanced in the world, and is owned by New Zealand Winegrowers, with funding from Marlborough District Council.

launched under a “continuous improvement sustainability plan,” meaning that improvement in its sustainability is expected and planned for. In addition to this, the building itself is aiming for a five green star certified built rating. If achieved, the research winery will be the first building to receive such a rating in Marlborough. “It’s not about telling people what to do, because that’s not our job. It’s about showcasing what can be done,” says Tracy Atkin, BRI Establishment Manager.

The Sun

one on one with the Sun

Going global for good Kevin and Michelle Gunn have not done their mid-life years by halves. The duo talk to Sun reporter Jacob Page about living out of a backpack, buying their house unseen, and coming from the Middle-East to Blenheim. Kevin and Michelle Gunn needed a change after the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes. A combination of fate and necessity allowed them to sell-up and trade-in their careers for a backpack and a jet-setting lifestyle which stunned their family. Having said all of that, it is the next generation of their family which has brought them home eventually - not to the Manawatu but to Marlborough. “We decided to come home because our children, (in the Manawatu) were having grandchildren. “After spending six years in the Middle-East and our stressful jobs in the New Zealand Fire Service, we purchased a slice of paradise in Anakiwa,” Kevin says. “In hindsight it doesn’t work so well because that gap of water makes it a world away at times,” Michelle says of trying to see their grandchildren. Michelle served 11-years in the fire service and Kevin even more with 17-years. “You get to a point where you become saturated by the work and what you see,” Kevin says. “Then comes the PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and we made a life-changing decision to chuck everything in, put a backpack on our backs and head away with no set plans,” Kevin says. “I had a bit of a meltdown after I was deployed to the Christchurch Earthquake and I spent 10 days there in the final search and rescue mode and while I wasn’t in the hot-zone of it I was in the organisational part of it and it was quite stressful,” Michelle says. “After the earthquakes a lot of people’s relationships and marriages broke down from the stress of it and I

realised I wanted to make a drastic life change, and Kev took the brunt of that. “I said to (Kevin) that I was going overseas and he said ‘I’ll come too’, and so that’s what we did,” she says. “Within a couple of weeks we had sold everything we owned; the way it turned out it was like it was meant to be,” Michelle says. With no fixed plan and armed with only backpacks, the couple set-off for Australia. “We decided to get to Australia and away from the kids because we were getting a lot of heat from our families,” Michelle says. “We developed a website doing house-sitting, pet-sitting and small business. “We ended up in Guatemala, Mexico, Canada - some real crazy places.

“New Zealand and the Marlborough region - nothing beats it.” “We did that for a year-and-a-half and then Kev got a job.” “I ended up getting a job in the United Arab Emirates running a fire service in one of their oil companies,” he says. With opportunities for women at a premium in a Muslim country, Michelle re-trained in offshore oil renewables. Once they returned home, the pair was hopeful they could return to senior jobs within the fire service but their eight years overseas forced them to

look elsewhere. “That’s why we decided to venture out and buy our own business,” Kev says. Firstly, they needed a property and as keen beach combers the Marlborough Sounds was instantly appealing. “At the time this property, well, a bit of land came up in Anakiwa and we put in a ridiculous cash offer sight unseen - we had no idea what we were buying and they accepted our offer. “We came home to see it and it was breath-taking,” Michelle says. “We ended up building a tiny house on it, and had to downsize for a second time to move into it,” Kevin says. “It’s amazing how much stuff people naturally accumulate. The Middle-East gave us a wake-up call to different cultures. “Coming from the fire service we appreciate what we have had

over the years and what we have today,” Kevin says. The couple say they initially struggled to come to grips with the “sleepy holiday” feel of Marlborough’s lifestyle while also not working for the first 10 months. “To live there and be self-sustaining and own a business was tough,” Kevin says. When the opportunity to buy The Spiderman Marlborough came along, they say the “timing felt right”. “It’s been around a long time and we were lucky to get it when it had a good client base, the previous owners had worked hard to ensure everyone was well serviced and looked after,” Kevin says. “I re-trained as a pest controller but it’s really about building on what was already established and the previous owners did well,” he says. “It’s also not our 20-year plan,”

Michelle says. “We have a five-year plan and then after that we’ll see. “We did underestimate how hard we would have to work but that’s ok. “Often it’s 7.30 in the morning until 9.30 at night,” Kevin says. The duo say the past nine years has been anything but conventional and they would not have had it any other way. “What a life’s journey it has been,” Kevin says. “You can imagine a couple of middle-aged people, quite naive about the world and we just put ourselves in the situation,” Michelle says. “We probably could have been dead 100 times but for some reason the planet wants to keep us. “One thing is for sure, we are pleased to be home,” Kevin says. “New Zealand and the Marlborough region - nothing beats it.”

Educate children on fire safety By Celeste Alexander

When children think about the fire service, often it conjures up images of shiny red trucks and firefighters fighting fires. In one way it helps to create a familiarity and respect for the fire service, however it is still important to educate children on the more serious issues so that if they were to ever find themselves in a life threatening situation, they would know how to act. This is the message of local senior firefighter and mother of four, Karen Timms. Karen serves with the Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade and has often been part of the team visiting local schools with one of their fire engines to speak with students about fire safety. She is a firm believer that children, from preschool to school age, should be taught some of the most important fire safety messages, such as get down, get low and get out fast and stay out. “As a family it’s important to talk to your children about these key messages, especially with the younger children. For them they might worry about their pet animals or favourite toy being left behind and in the event of a fire, you don’t want to be worrying that your children have gone back to find it. Children need to be reassured that their pets and toys they love are safe and that is why we need to call 111 and ask for fire. “Talking to them also helps children to not feel afraid of fire engines as they can appear daunting to a small child. Talk to them about your escape plan in the event of a fire, where your meeting point is and the ways to call for help,” she says. According to Fire and Emergency NZ, children as young as five can learn what to do in a fire emergency. “This is where fire safety education at a young age is so important; if they remember key words like get down, get low, get out fast and stay out, then that will be their default

ABOVE: If a fire starts in a room, a person has about three minutes to get out before the room is engulfed in smoke or flames. Teach your children to get out and stay out if there's a fire. RIGHT: Establish a safe meeting place for the family and educate children where it is, and how to safely reach it in the event of a fire.

mode,” Karen says. Another key message is to encourage children to be open and honest when it comes to fire. “I can still remember a fire several years ago when kids were playing with matches in the bedroom, and the mattress caught fire. They didn’t tell the parents straight away and lucky for the family, the fire didn’t take the whole house. “So try and get the message across that if they have caused a fire or have matches in their possession, tell Mum and Dad or an adult straight away. “My worst fear is that a child accidentally

causes a fire and are too afraid to tell their parents or adult family member and hides in the wardrobe or something. Just have an open conversation and let them know it’s good to tell Mum and Dad or an adult family member. “Schools actively promote FENZ’s Get Firewise programme, so if your child comes home excited about what they’ve learned, use it as an opportunity to discuss fire safety around the home,” Karen says. “And don’t forget to check out the Fire and Emergency NZ webpage, where on the ‘Home page’ you will find a section on Kids and Parents which includes fun stuff for kids, talking to your children about fire safety, and other great advice.”

Firefighters & Emergency Services Supporting the community • Saving lives • Making a difference

Speak to us, we can help If any member of the public would like to discuss any of the matters raised in these articles, or simply would like to speak to someone within Fire and Emergency NZ, they are welcome to visit the FENZ website or make contact with the local FENZ practitioners who are based in Blenheim and Nelson. Across NZ there are a little over 100 practitioners who can not only provide fire

Make your escape plan now Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) urges people to take the time to make an escape plan for your home and business. Simply thinking ‘I’ll jump out the window’ is not a plan. A house fire can kill you in less than five minutes, so take five minutes now to create your household escape plan. To build your escape plan think about: • Are there working smoke alarms throughout your home? • Who do you live with? Adults, children, pets and/or people who need assistance?

• Where is your safe meeting place? • How will you get out? • What is another way out? • Is your way out clear? • Is anything locked? • Let everybody know - does everyone in your household know the ways out if there is a fire? E.g. Have you all discussed your plan? In a fire, always remember the following: Be fast – a housefire can kill in less than five minutes. Don’t spend time trying to save possessions. Get low – Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than

flames. If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can harm you. Close doors – A closed door buys you time. It slows down the spread of fire and allows you more time to get to safety. Get out and stay out – Deaths have occurred when someone has gone back into the fire. Don’t go back inside for any reason. Call 111 – Call as soon as you are out in a safe place. Clearly state the address of the fire and whether anyone has not made it to the safe meeting place.

safety education and advice to the community, but can also work with children who might have a problem with fire-lighting. Practitioners can provide reassurance to parents and have a specialised programme for children to help. Here in Blenheim the FENZ office is located within the Blenheim Fire Station and people are welcome to pop in and speak with the local practitioner.

Pop-up park fun this Saturday By Celeste Alexander

If you have yet to experience Playcentre for yourself and your children, there will be a pop-up event taking place at The Market Place in Blenheim this Saturday. From 10am-2pm, Blenheim Playcentre will bring along some of their fun play equipment to add to the existing pop-up park items made available there by the Blenheim Business Association. Mother of three and fundraising/PR for

Blenheim Playcentre, Taryn Nicolle, says the whole community is invited along to the free event. “We cater for children aged from birth through to starting school, and will be playing with bubbles, water and ice, extra climbing equipment and so much more. So bring your children down for some fun. “This is a great opportunity for parents to find out what Blenheim Playcentre has to offer. We are essentially a group of mums who support one another while letting our

kids play. “Playcentre children get the opportunity to make friends with others outside of their own age group with mixed age play,” she says. Playcentre is an Early Childhood Education provider with a difference; it’s parents and whanau who care for the children attending. “We run sessions Monday through to Friday from 9.15am – 11.45am at our 17 Eltham Road location,” Taryn says. “Families receive three free visits and term fees are really affordable, at just $30 per term.”

Connor MacKinnon (3), and Isla MacKinnon, (1) both play at the site of Saturday’s planned Pop-Up Playcentre. The pop-up will run from 10am - 2pm.

PROUD TO SUPPORT RAPAURA SCHOOL Ph 03 579 5424 193 Rapaura Rd, Blenheim vinesvillagecafe.co.nz

The students at Rapaura School are excited to welcome the community to its Country Harvest Fair this Saturday, from 10am - 2pm.

Get set for fair fun this Saturday School galas have long been a popular way to raise much needed funds, while inviting the community along for a family friendly day out. This Saturday will see Rapaura School hold its annual Country Harvest Fair which has been months in the making, and promises loads of fun, activities, food and of course – some bargains! The organising committee has been working hard behind the scenes to put together an exciting lineup of stalls and entertainment, a spokesperson says. “A group of hardworking parents have been planning since term four last year,” she says. “It’s a huge effort for everyone involved. “It’s always great to see the community go along and enjoying what we have to offer, so we hope to see you all on Saturday.” So much support has been given to Rapaura School for its annual fair, with donations towards silent auctions, prizes, and produce just an example of what has been given. “We have received a lot of support from businesses which we are very grateful for. This is what helps our fair to be a success and in turn, the money benefits the whole school community,” she says. Money raised from this year’s Country Harvest Fair will go towards teacher aides, new equipment and anything else the school needs. “By supporting this event you are supporting

our school.” What will be on offer you ask? Rapaura School’s famous bake sale will once again be held. Every year parents bake up a storm to put together a wide selection of delicious goodies for people to choose from. For those looking to enjoy some lunch and snacks, there will be a BBQ serving up sausages, mouth-watering bacon and avocado buns, and hot chips. Treat yourself at the The Country Café, and no fair would be complete without popcorn and candyfloss, so make sure you don’t miss out. Then there’s the hugely popular Lemon Heaven stall which is always a sellout success. Being a country harvest fair there is a great selection of farm fresh produce for people to purchase and if you’re feeling lucky, have a go at winning one of the incredible silent auction prizes up for grabs. Another feature of the fair which has long been a favourite is the White Elephant sale. A huge selection of donated clothing, toys and other items have been donated to this sale, so head along and find yourself a bargain. Out on the field will be bouncy castles, crazy trailer rides, and plenty of space for the kids to play. The Country Harvest Fair runs from 10am – 2pm at Rapaura School, located on Hammerichs Road.

Fishing comp a catch once again Story and photos by Aimee O’Hagan

Friday, Saturday and Sunday saw fishing enthusiasts from around Marlborough head out to lakes, rivers, coves in the Sounds and many other destinations around the region for a spot of fishing. They were all taking part in the Renwick Arms Country Club Fishing Competition 2020, which

has been run by Renwick man, the late Allan Fergusson – and now his wife, Marg, who is continuing to hold the event on Allan’s behalf – for close to ten years. There were all kinds of fish caught for this year’s competition, including gurnards, crayfish, cods, snappers, spotties, barracudas, and many more! According to Marg, the heaviest fish overall was a kingfish that

weighed 11.85kg. “There was 0.30 of a gram difference between the winner and the runner up!” Marg exclaims. There were 230 competitors in the adults open section and 66 children who participated in this year’s contest, she says. Over $7000 worth of prizes were available for those who took part, from awards for the winners of categories to random spot prizes.

“We had some awesome support from our sponsors and we’re so thankful for their generosity,” Marg says. “We don’t have a competition if we don’t have sponsors, but more importantly, we don’t have a competition without all the contestants.” Organisers raised an additional $790 for Renwick Plunket Play Group through the competition’s auction.

Emotional finish for friends By Celeste Alexander

Renwick woman, Leanne Broughton, has done her friends proud. She challenged herself to compete in the 10km Christchurch Motorway Half Marathon held on Sunday, and not only managed to win her age category, but has also raised over $12,000 for her friend who is battling a rare form of cancer. Leanne has had a Givealittle page called ‘Running for Jo’ in support of Renwick Kindergarten teacher, Jo Leahy. Jo became very ill last year with a rare and inoperable bile duct cancer, Cholangiocarcinoma, and now has a tumour on her liver which is growing at an aggressive rate. Wanting to help her friend, Leanne decided she would run the half marathon and dedicate her efforts to Jo. Leanne, Jo and a group of family and friends travelled to Christchurch for the event and were there to cheer Leanne on. “Before the race I was really nervous, but also excited. As soon as the horn went off it was just focus from that point on. I was thinking of Jo the whole run which

kept me going,” Leanne says. “The weather was pretty good other than a cold breeze. Half of the run was with a headwind but overall I felt like I was doing well. “Finishing was quite emotional,” she laughs. “Jo and I were both emotional. I felt so good to have done this for her.” Without Leanne knowing a group of Jo’s family turned up with banners made up with ‘Running for Jo’ on them. “That was really sweet,” she says.

Nearly 500 competitors took part in the half marathon event and overall, Leanne placed 27th and first in her age category (20-39). “I was stoked. I ran my heart out for Jo and am happy with how it went. “At the end of the day it was never about the time, it was what it meant,” she says. The Givealittle page; Running for Jo, closes this evening. Money raised is going to Jo and her family to help support them through her cancer treatment.
