Natasha Knox gives her MoreFM Marlborough co-host Glenn Kirby a taste of what to expect in the radio stations annual Mid Winter Swim at the Picton foreshore this weekend.
Outlook for Today Fine, early frosts possible.
Icy cold dip By Robbie Parkes Marlborough MoreFM host Glenn Kirby along with hundreds of other hardy souls will be braving the cold for the radio stations annual Mid Winter Swim this weekend. “I volunteered him, obviously one of us has to go in,” said fellow host Natasha Knox, who unlike Glenn is staying far away from the water. The event challenges the tough, hardy and just plain crazy people out there to tackle the chilly Picton Foreshore and show the rest of the country what Marlborough is made of. Around 500 people turn up with all manner of costumes - a man in Speedos, a police uniform and horses head being one of the event regulars. “We encourage people to dress up,” said Natasha, but no wetsuits allowed. It’s the first time the duo has emceed the event together and both said it is a great family event that everyone can get into. “You do get quite a few that do the swimming, most just go in for a dip,” said Glenn. Those braving the waters can look forward to a hot shower from a fire engine afterwards, hot food and drink courtesy of Picton School and a number of spot prizes. The major prize on the day is a Toshiba heat pump and installation from Cuddon Air Conditioning. Registrations start midday on the day, Sunday June 24, and swimming begins at 1 pm.

Anniversary of accident marked today Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk It has been five years since Blenheim woman Angela Bowers (right) survived a near fatal car accident, and today she is marking the anniversary by spending “special” time with her family. On June 20, 2007 Angela was travelling toward Nelson for a work event in drizzly conditions, and around 7pm her car left the road, went into a ditch and collided with a tree.
The driver’s door received the majority of the impact. As a result of her injuries and treatment which followed Angela has no memory of the accident, but knows that thanks to the actions of emergency services and hospital staff she miraculously survived. She suffered lung contusions, a severe pelvis break, spinal and head injuries and spent the first two months laying flat on her back in hospital. It was feared that Angela
would never walk again, but after a long recovery process she is back to enjoying her life again. “You can come out of an experience like this better or bitter, it’s up to you to make the choice of what you want to do with it. “I have proven that through adversity good can come and I hope to inspire people to value life and what they have. “To make a difference in people’s lives, that’s why I am here today,” she says.
Remembering a wonderful story teller and friend By Annabelle Latz Neal, William John, (right), well known as Willy J, Mr Bill by the littlies, but mostly Bill by everyone. 16.6.1934 – 14.6.2012. To my darling and beloved husband of Marie (nee Scott.) We will miss you as you were such a story book. You died in my arms after a short and very painful illness. May you rest in peace my love. Marie. Bill and Marie married on January 5, 2008, after meeting each other at John Gleeson’s 80th birthday party in Renwick in 2006. Marie said since their time together they have enjoyed the same interests of vintage tractors, vintage machinery, attending shows, and dancing. “We loved dancing where Bill used to be the MC .” Marie will always remember the great story teller who Bill was, at their home in Tua Marina and amongst the Marlborough community. “People loved his way, they loved his yarns. He had a lot of stories, everything was funny. “We had a great circle of friends. People still hold him in such high respect,” Marie says. Bill and Marie both loved travelling New Zealand, and shared a love for farming and horses. “Bill started ploughing with Clydesdales when he was seven years-old. He used to have to run to keep up with them.” Bill passed away last Thursday morning, 114 days after being diagnosed with cancer.
“He died in my arms.” “Last Tuesday he said ‘I love you sweetie.’ Last Thursday morning he had a tear in his eye.” Marie is grateful for the great life they built together with all their friends. Marie wanted to thank the wonderful nurses and doctors at Hospice Marlborough, who were wonderful to them both, visiting Bill at his home where he stayed until the very end. “It’s the silence and the emptiness that will be so hard.” Marie says. He will be greatly missed.

Running start to Nestle grocery grab Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim woman Lynette Rayner certainly got her exercise yesterday morning when she took part in the New World and Nestle $500 Grocery Grab at New World Blenheim. Lynette was the lucky Marlborough shopper who had 90 seconds to race around the supermarket isles to collect as many grocery items as she could, though her only concern was not hitting other shoppers. “I didn’t really have a plan of where I would go, all I was worried about was trying not to run other people over,” she laughs. Cheered on by her husband Larry, Lynette managed to fill her trolley with everything from breakfast cereals through to frozen vegetables and potato chips. And rather than stock up her cupboards with the groceries, Lynette opted to donate the whole lot.
“One of my first thoughts when I found out that I had won was that I wanted to give it away to others who need it more. “I haven’t decided who will be getting the groceries, I’ll decide when I see what I end up with,” she says. The promotion was t he t h i rd run by Nestle in conjunction with New World. earlier this year. RTI is involved in a variety of research projects including the likes of health and pharmaceuticals to energy and environmental projects. The American institute is seeking collaborative research partners and has shown interest in the Marlborough region. Gerald said the business development mission will provide New Zealand with the chance to demonstrate the depth of expertise and innovative technologies that exist here. “Ultimately we hope to draw RTI toward long term collaborations with our companies and research institutions,” he said. “The depth and complexity of RTI’s current activities is of a scale far beyond anything in this part of the world and a relationship could open doors in many directions for New Zealand and for Marlborough.” RTI already operates in 40 countries around the world.

Argentine Ants control plAn The Marlborough District Council has prepared a plan to try and control the Argentine Ants that have invaded a pocket of largely industrial land in Blenheim. The ant is considered a highly invasive pest and have become a major horticultural pest. The Council’s biosecurity team is planning to arrange the use of surface sprays and insect baits to try and stop the insect spreading to other parts of the region. It’s intended that the control programme will begin in October.
picton Mother sentenced A Picton mother has been sentenced to three months’ home detention and nine months’ supervision after assaulting two of her children. The mother of four appeared in Blenheim District Court on Monday after the incident on March 15. Her 13-year-old daughter called police after refusing to give her mother her Ritalin pills. The Court heard that earlier in the night the mother got into an argument with one of her younger children and hit her on the back of the head before pulling her away by the arm.
Marlborough representatives head to US Gerald Hope is one of three representatives from the Marlborough region who will be heading to the US as part of a delegation with intentions to explore future working relationships between the two countries. Initiated and funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and brought together by the Marlborough Research Centre (MRC), the aim is to introduce more international scientific capacity into New Zealand, notably Marlborough. Gerald, MRC chief executive will be a key member of the delegation with Marlborough-based economic anthropologist Amanda Lynn who will provide advisory services to the mission. Marlborough-based Plant & Food senior scientist Mike Trought will also be going. Stonewood showhome a great success By Robbie Parkes Stonewood Homes Marlborough unveiled their new Taylor Pass Road showhome on the weekend, opening its doors to a keen Blenheim public. “It was a brilliant weekend,” said Stonewood new home consultant Whiona McKay. “We had people waiting to actually talk to us.” About 50 people came through on the Saturday, eager to get the lowdown on the new home. Stonewood director David
Precious Things
Campbell said they had some pretty good feedback from people having a look. “It’s a fun, cool showhome, we love it,” said Whiona. Whiona said the showhome was kept quite simple and nothing over-the-top was done to it. “We’ve purposely done that to try and meet the market at the moment,” she said. Whiona said a lot of people did ask about winter heating, and were surprised to hear that it only needed one heat pump because of how the sun hit the

Milestones
are landmarks and highlights. They create signposts for the future and celebrate achievement and commitment. The past two weeks have seen this community celebrate milestones both international and local. Firstly - Congratulations to the century-old local business, Thomas’s. An amazing milestone in both business and personal terms, bringing the best to Marlborough without compromise through five generations. Secondly - The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (recognized by republicans or royalists) is a major achievement in longevity, dedication, dignity and an ability -to quote Kipling - “to keep one’s head when all around are losing theirs and blaming it on you”. It’s important to celebrate milestones as they help us recognise the positive – something society struggles to do on occasions! Major milestones have a precious metal or gemstone association i.e. Diamond Jubilee (I can’t miss noting that!) and we have a ‘Diamond’ milestone of our own this year with a record number of Antwerp diamond pre-orders and post-trip sales this year. This is a very gratifying result in our endeavours to bring the best to Marlborough. Our superb goldsmith adds to this experience!

house. And the double glazing and interior insulation factored into that too. They’ve built five variations
of that showhome before hand. The showhome is open every Saturday and Sunday from 1-4pm or by appointment during the week.
New constables for Blenheim Two new constables will be stationed in Blenheim after graduating from The Royal New Zealand Police College last Thursday. Constable Aaron Senior, already a familiar face in the region because of his role as the Marlborough Area Rugby Manager and as a Marlborough Red Devil, is one of the two. Johnathon Fris, from Nelson, is the
second new Blenheim constable. Aaron was also the recipient of the Police Association prize for Section Achievement in his section. The prize is awarded to the individual in each section recognised as making the greatest contribution to the team. Seventy-four new constables graduated from the College in Wing 272 last week.

Sun readers have their say... Q: What do you think rising the retirement age to 67 will benefit Kiwis? Why?
Gwenda Higgins Blenheim
Laura Bettjeman Blenheim
Reta Dudley Blenheim
Bronwyn Powell Blenheim
Jenny Burton Blenheim
I don’t have a retirement plan yet but my husband does. I don’t think they should put it up. Keeping older people working stops younger people from getting into the workforce. Besides, most elder, ex workers tend to do a lot of volunteer work while they’re still able.
It has pros and cons like everything. It means that there will be fewer jobs for younger people because elder workers will keep their jobs for longer. It scares you into thinking about a retirement plan; you never know how long you’ll live to.
I think looking at it; people are living longer so 67 is not a bad age to retire. The only down side is that it could hurt the younger generation from being able to get into the work force.
I think it should go up. 67 is a fair age to work till. But I haven’t yet sorted out a retirement plan.
I used to live in Aussie, so to me the retirement age has always been 67, but it really depends on the individual as to whether or not they are able to work until they are 67. It all comes down to money in the end.

Dear Ed The other day I bought some honey for $8 which I got a 10 percent discount. The young intelligent person serving me got out a calculator to work out what the discount was in money. Before she had hardly pressed a button,
I told her it was 80 cents and that $8 minus 80 cents is $7.20. She remarked how “cool” that was to work it out quickly and in my head. But really it was “uncool” that she was unable to work it out or should I say hadn’t been taught to. Don Coyote
Old Man’s Beard Dear Ed As a visitor I am interested in conservation. I’m told old man’s beard is a pest plant. As I visited parts of Marlborough I saw old man’s beard growing on roadsides on most country roads and even by reserves in town. Should not council be rooting it out? I understand it roots out easily.
And pray what does the Department of Conservation do? Should not it be attending to the problem? Otherwise is NZ clean and green and 100 percent pure? There are other issues too like 1080 poison. USA bans it. I’m just wondering. Howard Funk Jnr

Nuisance phone calls Dear Ed, As the person who spoke to the reporter last week re overseas generated nuisance phone calls, I would like to elaborate a little more. One point that was ommitted from the report and may be relevant to others is that, apart from the first couple of months of these calls, there is about a 10 second silence followed by a low sort of whistle and a female voice saying ‘Goodbye’. Others I have recently spoken who have received these calls have exactly the same happening. While the calls do sound electronically generated, when I spoke recently and asked the purpose and that the calls had been reported, the connection was broken. Thinking I had finally managed to stop them with this tactic when my phone company seem unable to act, I was disappointed to receive another call at 9.28 p.m. on Monday evening. I rather hope that there may be a way of stopping these calls and that someone out there may have an answer. I did forget to point out that my phone company did offer me a new phone number on two occasions but I have refused as I have had mine for 50+ years and to change it now is not feasible. Annie

71 Market St BlenheiM By Robbie Parkes Young performers from around the region will be putting their dance shoes on for the 34th Blenheim Dancing Society’s annual festival this weekend. Gabby Mark and Claudia StewartCameron are just two students from the Marlborough Dance Centre who will be performing in the event which runs from Friday to Sunday at the Marlborough Civic Theatre. Children as young as five can enter, and the dancing will range from solo performances, to duos, to group competitions in a variety of styles. Gabby and Claudia’s teachers at the Dance Centre, Jeannie Mark (Gabby’s mum) and Gemma Adams have been helping to put together their routines for
the competition. “There’s different sorts of categories within each genre of dance,” said Gemma. Gemma teaches ballet and a wee bit of contemporary dance and said a lot of work has to be put into these performances. The dance has to be choreographed, they need to find the right music and the kids need to learn it. But, Gemma said it is really good for the kids to get up on stage as it’s great for their confidence. “I guess it’s more about getting onto the stage and being able to perform.” Gabby will be performing in a couple of styles including barefoot, while Claudia will be doing a classical dance. Gabby will also be trying for the 2012 National Young Performers Awards as
the chance for qualification has arisen in Blenheim. If she gets a selection here, Gabby can go to the bigger competition in November and even if she doesn’t, she has a second shot in Tauranga in two weeks time. Hayley Watts from the Southern Ballet School will be the judge on the weekend. Gabby said she’s just kind of getting set for the whole thing. “It’s hard work building up to it but once you’re there, it’s good.” But, even at 16 and having danced for most of her life, she still enjoys these festivals and competitions. She said it’s a good opportunity to just get out there and have a go. “And for the youngins it’s just a chance to dress up and go on stage.”

Charity never retires Val Seatter’s ‘semi retirement’ and love for people What is retirement really and does anyone truly ever retire? This is a question often asked of someone when they announce their retirement date, but for local woman Val Seatter the love for her community work will always see her helping people, as Celeste Lodewyk finds out. Val, who is originally from Taranaki began her working career as a nurse in Palmerston North before marrying her airforce husband and transferring to Woodbourne. The couple went on to establish a small farm on Thomson’s Ford Road specialising in growing flowers for drying, and it was during this time that Val became involved with the establishment of the Bread of Life Trust through her church. “I love working with people. None of what I have done was for me, it has always been about others,” she smiles. Val recently announced her retirement after 20 years involvement with Bread of Life, initially as a trustee and then as the manager. Although Val will be stepping away from the managerial role, she says she plans to continue her involvement with Bread of Life as well as taking the time to enjoy “semi retirement” with her husband. Bread of Life has been well known and celebrated within the Marlborough community since its existence, growing from a group of voluntary ‘do-gooders’ to a professional organisation. It stemmed from the desire for the St Ninians Wairau Parish to reach beyond its walls to those in the community in need.
Val has played an important role over the years, not only by reaching out to those in need but also by helping to launch a number of community programmes. One of these was the OSCAR programmes established in 2000 providing before and after school care and holiday programmes. Today, there are 11 programmes run in Blenheim and around 170 families involved who all appreciate having “a safe environment for children to enjoy” while parents are working. Bread of Life’s budgeting advice was also another programme that Val helped to set up. Looking back to where her involvement began, Val says it was the inspiring stories of fellow church members, who were living on low incomes that prompted Bread of Life to be formed. “We had people in our congregation who were living on benefits, and at that time there was talk of benefit cuts, so needs really amplified. “This inspired us to help. Initially there were 10 of us and when we became
aware of a need we visited the family and assessed the situation to see how we could help as a church. “Eventually there was so much need that we applied to become a charitable trust in 1992 so that we would be eligible for funding, and employed a community social worker,” Val explains. Speaking with Val, it is obvious from the emotion in her voice that she will miss the regular contact with staff, clients and volunteers. “I couldn’t possibly name one stand out moment in my time with Bread of Life, I found that it was the little things that touch you the most. “When clients come back and tell you that thanks to our support their lives have changed for the better, you realise how fortunate you are to be part of this process and feel very humble,” Val says.

WARMTH 2012
Council proposes act on air pollution Because of high air pollution levels in Blenheim during May, the Marlborough District Council is enforcing a ban on the installation of new open fires in houses built within the town boundaries from next year. Blenheim exceeded its air standard six times from July to August last winter, also experiencing the highest levels of pollution ever recorded here. From May 31, 2013, Blenheim residents who rely on open fires and old woodburners are being urged to think seriously about clean heating options. The future use of existing open fires and old woodburners within urban Blenheim is also currently under review as part of the broader review of Council resource management plans. This ruling falls under the Government’s new mandatory National Environmental Standards.
The public will get the opportunity to make submissions on that proposal when the Regional Policy Statement goes out for public consultation. At a glance: In the Regional Policy Statement review, the Council is proposing to: • Ban the use of existing indoor open fires • Phase out the use of solid fuel burners that are more than 15 years old • Ban all outdoor burning in the Blenheim airshed (urban area) • Allow the installation of only those new multi-fuel burners which comply with the National Environmental Standards. More information about both these schemes is available on the Marlborough District Council website www.marlborough.govt.nz
Drying Firewood
Why it’s important to know about seasoning firewood
When cutting or purchasing firewood remember to properly dry it before burning.
KEEP COSY THIS WINTER WITH THESE HOT DEALS FROM PLACEMAKERS
• 2 heat settings • 1 fan setting • Adjustable thermostat 3691445
When purchasing freshly cut firewood, it’s important that you know not to burn it until it has been dried. Generally most firewood merchants sell dry firewood, but if it has been recently cut you will need to stack it a winter ahead. When firewood is not dried properly many problems arise. First and foremost fires are hard to light and keep lit when the wood
is wet. Wet wood also gives off less heat because a lot of the energy from the fire is spent removing the excess moisture from the wood. What is more, wet wood produces more smoke, affecting air quality and blocking chimneys which creates a fire hazard. This is a potentially dangerous situation that should be avoided.

WARMTH 2012
Prevent mould growth in your home Mould is not only unsightly and unwelcome in your home, but it is also unhealthy too. Mould grows best in damp and poorly ventilated areas and reproduces by making spores. Airborne mould spores are commonly found in both indoor and outdoor environments, and when they land on damp spots indoors, they may begin to grow and spread. The best way to control indoor mould growth is to control the source of moisture. You should also consider double glazing, insulating, heating and ventilating your home. What does mould look like? Mould is not always easy to recognize. It often looks like ‘fuzz’ or appears to be a stain, smudge or discoloration. The most common moulds are black, green or white. However, mould can be many other colours ranging from grey to orange to brown. How does mould affect people? Mould associated with damp buildings can trigger nasal congestion,
sneezing, cough, wheeze, respiratory infections and worsen asthma and allergic conditions. People with weakened immune systems such as allergies, severe asthma and chronic, obstructive or allergic lung diseases are more susceptible to these symptoms and other serious health effects. People that are more susceptible should seek medical advice if they are concerned about mould. Controlling mould growth Generally, if you can see or smell mould, you need to clean up and remove the mould immediately because mould can damage what it grows on. The longer it grows the more damage it can cause. Mould only grows when there is sufficient moisture. When mould appears the first task is to try to establish where the moisture is coming from. Parts of the house that get wet or have poor ventilation are prone to mould growth can include kitchens, bathrooms and laundries because of condensation and leaking pipes. Cupboards and corners because of restricted ventilation can also pose a

problem as can walls and windows that are exposed to hot indoor air and cold outdoor air. Walls and ceilings due to insufficient insulation or rain seeping through the roof. Contact a professional to discuss which options are best for your home to eliminate mould.
Winter warmth tips Right: Keep the cold air out and keep your family warm and comfortable this winter by insulating your home.
• Insulation: Good quality, well installed insulation helps keep the heat in during winter (and keep it out during summer). This makes your house easier and cheaper to heat properly, and more comfortable and healthy to live in. So don’t put it off any longer - get your insulation sorted. Ceiling, floors then walls. • The order of priority for insulating your home should be the ceiling and then the underfloor (preferably, do both at the same time). Walls come next as they are usually trickier and more expensive to do. • Reduce heat loss through your windows. Lots of heat can disappear through windows, so good curtains are a must-have. Double-glazing or retrofit alternatives can reduce window heat loss even more. • New builds and renovations. It’s well worth opting for more than minimum Building Code insulation levels, especially in colder parts of the country. • Block up the draughts. Even well-insulated homes can be hard to heat if they’re drafty.

Riding for a good cause By Robbie Parkes O ve r o n e h u n d r e d e a g e r motorcyclists padded up and hit the road on the weekend, braving the cold ride from Picton to Blenheim, all for a good cause. The 2012 Marlborough Ulysses Ambulance Run took place on Sunday, with the Marlborough branch of the Ulysses Motorcycle Club inviting members and anyone keen for a trip to join them in supporting St John Appeal Week. Around 120 motorcyclists left the St John ambulance facility in Picton at 10:30am making their way to Blenheim School. The ride occurs every year in an effort to fundraise for St John

All the proceeds going towards a new mannequin for Marlborough St John, worth around $2,300 which will help up skill and train new and existing staff as well as volunteers. “It’s an annual thing, we leave from different points, different years,” said Ulysses club member Mac Trilford. The Club coordinator Kevin Bright said the ride was great, even in the winter weather. “It is cold but it’s a really neat time
for motorcyclists, the air is clean and crisp.” The event usually takes place in the warmer month of April but was changed to coincide with the St John Appeal Week. Kevin said registration charges had also gone up a lot in recent times. “It’s over double to register our bikes,” he said. Another fundraiser is planned for St John in March next year and the Club will do their annual Toy Run at Christmas in support of the Salvation Army. Between now and March, Kevin said the Club hopes to have enough money to pay entirely for the mannequin.
Nicola Bright sells a Ulysses Ambulance Run badge to husband Kevin Bright as part of the clubs annual Marlborough Ulysses Ambulance Run which helped raise funds for Marlborough St John this year.

By Robbie Parkes Star Sweeting (right) is proof that hard work, dedication and good family support are key elements in making a successful career change even later in life. Star worked as a dental hygienist in the army for 20 years, before taking a beauty therapy course at Nelson NMIT - at age 48. She took the full year course last year even though she and her family lived in Blenheim. Now a beauty therapist working with Arthur Devine, Star said a career change even later on in life is just about being organised and determined to see it through. “If you’re not happy with the career you’re in, upskill to one that is to your liking, do your research, plan, and make it happen, it is well within anyone’s reach.” “Going to Nelson, being separated from your family, obviously you are going to be
committed and have some drive.“ She had accommodation close to campus in the first six months but found she wasn’t getting enough study done. At that point Star took the family caravan and based herself at Brook Valley Holiday Park – about 4.5 km away from the school. She even walked most days. “It was a bit of a slog but I enjoyed it,” she said. She said the full year course was pretty intense but she loved it. She said her success really boils down to her having such a supportive husband, Mark, and him having such an understanding employer. “I think my husband is the big hero of my story,” she said. “I just have to acknowledge how well he supported me through that year.”
Share the Road
Motorcyclists are highly mobile but less visible and therefore more vulnerable. It is important to remember to: • Check your mirrors and blind spots before turning • Look behind you before opening your door or changing lanes • Be aware that most motorcycle indicators don't automatically turn off like most other vehicles' - don't be fooled by an indicator that stays on • Acknowledge motorcycles always need a whole lane. • At any time a motorcyclist may suddenly swerve or slow down to avoid road hazards.

OLUNTEER AWARENESS WEEK 17 - 23 June
Volunteering “uplifting”
“Building communities through volunteering” is the theme for the 2012 Volunteer Awareness Week which runs June 17 to 23. Highlighting that volunteers provide an invaluable contribution to our society, and that every minute of their work counts.
Thank You Too often we take for granted those people who most deserve our collective gratitude – the volunteers within our community who do so much with little thought of thanks or recognition.
The Marlborough Stroke Club committee. Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk There are many reasons why Marlburians give their time to community volunteering. Some say that the spare time brought about by retirement provided the opportunity to volunteer, whereas others say it was a friend of a family member who inspired them. For Elsa Cresswell, it was her friend’s husband who motivated her to join the Marlborough Stroke Club as a volunteer 20 years ago. “He became a member of the club after surviving a stroke, and before he passed away it was his wish for the club to be kept going. “Back then it was only a small group, so I got involved to help where I could and over time more and more people joined and made it the success it is today,” she says. Elsa is a member of the club’s committee and helps to co-ordinate entertainment for the fortnightly Friday
groups. Asked what made volunteering rewarding, Elsa says it is seeing the progress of stroke survivors and how happy they are for the time and attention. “I feel very lucky that I can do volunteer work as you meet so many people and hear their interesting stories. “If it wasn’t for volunteers, half of Blenheim would fall over,” she smiles. The same was felt by fellow Stroke Club volunteer Margaret Gilbert who has been with the club for 18 years. “It’s very uplifting and gratifying to help others,” she says. Margaret had always had a desire to volunteer and after moving to Blenheim. “I asked someone about volunteering and they recommended the Stroke Club. I soon found that it was a remarkable group of people and I have made some great friends,” she says.
CELEBRATING OUR VOLUNTEERS Marlborough Stroke Club
Thank you to our enthusiastic and hard working volunteers. You provide a wonderful service for our stroke affected community.
They are the dedicated souls who do so much, too often without credit, to keep alive our local service clubs and our sports codes and who support our schools and welfare organisations. We all rely on the community spirit that drives these good people to volunteer their time and skills, we all depend upon their energy and goodwill. Though most do it with no reward in mind, I don’t believe that it’s enough to simply accept that volunteers do it for the pleasure and satisfaction of knowing they make a difference. On behalf of a grateful community, may I extend heartfelt thanks to every one of them for their individual contribution to the wellbeing of Marlborough.

Blenheim Constable Maria Boniface talks about the Police force with Abigail Mortimer-Jones (17).
Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Monday night’s Marlborough Careers Evening was a huge hit with young and old, recording an impressive 1151 people attending the event held at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. It wasn’t only students who took the opportunity to speak with education providers, but a number of adults as well. “It’s been a great night and the numbers are impressive,” Marlborough Boys’ College Careers and Transition manager Peter Kemp told the Sun that evening.

“Mike Birdsall from NZ Marine ITO told me this is the best careers evening that he attends in New Zealand. He is based in Auckland and travels here every year,” Peter said. Students that the Sun spoke with ranged from 13-17-years and all had the same enthusiasm about their future career choices. Nick Capill (16) was spotted by the Marlborough Aero Club stall talking to flight instructor Nick Milne. “I’m really interested in aviation and it’s been great talking about scholarship and training opportunities with someone who also started out young,” he says. For Abigail MortimerJones (17) the Police Force was one of several options on her career list. Abigail talked about the training requirements with Blenheim Constable Maria Boniface. “I know Maria well and have followed her progress through Police training, so it was great to chat with her tonight,” she said.

Learning from one of the best By Robbie Parkes Two Marlborough Girls’ College photography students have been given a very special opportunity to learn from one of New Zealand’s best. Sophie Lee and Brittany Hughes received scholarships last week inviting them to a photography retreat at the Bay of Many Coves – hosted by Simon Woolf. “When we first found out we were stunned,” said Brittany. “It’s really exciting.” The girls will be making their way to the Bay of Many Coves Resort on the weekend of June 29 where they take part in a workshop with Simon. They knew they were in for a treat when they found out they were staying at a five-star resort in the Marlborough Sounds. And it is a bit of an added bonus that both were good friends anyway. Ian Fleming, Sophie and Brittany’s photography teacher at school selected
the two to go. “I guess just from our work ethics and what we had handed in,” said Sophie. They said they are looking forward to learning new techniques and different aspects of photography and the one on one side of things. “It’ll be cool, they have a lot of different lenses there for us to use,” said Sophie. She said working with Simon and getting his opinion on their work will be great. “Other than Mr Fleming we don’t have anyone who can critique it.” Both say Mr Fleming is a great influence. Sophie and Brittany aim to keep doing photography in some form in the future. “It’s quite hard to do just photography,” said Brittany. She hopes to do a volunteer project in Nepal doing photojournalism and Sophie plans to get into design work, balancing that with photography.

By Robbie Parkes Hunter Marfell can race at top speed now that he has a new balance bike, courtesy of Bikefit Marlborough. The bike was given away by the store after they held a prize draw as part of the Parent and Child Expo last weekend. Mum, Sharleen Marfell got the good news on Friday, and three yearold Hunter was more than excited. “He was jumping up and down,” she said. “Hunter hasn’t learnt to ride a bike yet, he definitely loves scooters.”
She said he’s still getting his balance right, but this new bike is going to be great for him. “He will be able to keep up with his big brother.” Sharleen wanted to thank Bikefit for their kind donation. “We’ve never really won anything like this before.” Brent Ackroyd, one of the stores owners said it’s about supporting the community and being a new business, it’s important for us to support local events like the Expo. “That’s a big part of our market - families,” he said.
