Ditfort elated with scorer selection

Continued from page 1 It is Ditfort’s first world championship away with the full national team. He was an official tournament scorer at the 2013 tournament in Auckland, and he travelled with the New Zealand under-16 side in 2008.

Ditfort also scored for the Black Sox at the ISF Men’s World Softball Championship Qualifiers in Auckland in December, a tournament which saw the Black Sox qualify alongside Australia for the 16team tournament in Canada.

He says he was delighted to receive the news.

“I was bloody ecstatic. It doesn’t get any better than going away with the national side.

“Obviously I knew I was a

good chance of going having scored in the qualifiers…I had my foot in the door.”

As the team scorer it is Ditfort’s job to communicate with team management about events going on in the game.

“You might see a pitcher whose first pitch is always a strike. Sometimes you see a trend which can help the coaches,” he says.

“If you see something the opposition do which is wrong you can appeal, and it is my job to advise them (coaching staff.)”

Ditfort started playing the game in 1980 when he was based at Woodbourne, and took up scoring in 1994.

In the 1997-98 season he became qualified at a national

level, having taken his theory exam, practical exam and earned his badges.

“The more scoring you do, the better you become,” he says.

“It’s all about watching the game. When you look back at the scorebook you should be able to tell everything that happened in the game.”

The Black Sox have a prolonged warm-up programme as the players are currently in their off-season, so Ditfort flies out of the country early next month.

Ditfort will be joined in the Black Sox party by two pitchers with Marlborough ties – Kurt Schollum and Nik Hayes, who now plays in Wellington.

Bach break-ins could be linked Marlborough Police are investigating a spate of burglaries in the Marlborough Sounds and say they believe a number of the burglaries appear to have been committed by the same person.

Since April 24, police have received seven reports of burglaries to baches in the Sounds area.

Of those, five appear to be linked by the offender’s modus operandi.

In those five cases the offender has forced entry and used amenities in the baches. Food has been eaten, but very little property has been stolen.

Acting Marlborough Area Commander Senior Sergeant Peter Payne says police would like to hear from anyone who had witnessed suspicious activity or vehicles in the area.

He also encouraged bach owners to check their properties regularly and ensure they had taken all practical steps to secure valuables.

Chanel receives bravery award

By Adam Poulopoulos A Year 5 Richmond View School pupil was rewarded for her “exceptional maturity” at her school’s assembly on Friday afternoon.

Chanel Marshall, 9, has become just the second primary school student in Marlborough to be presented with a St John bravery award.

The award was given after Chanel recently treated and called an ambulance for her father Aaron, who is a Type 1 Diabetic.

Chanel discovered Aaron in a confused state due to low blood sugar.

She tested his levels and gave him sugary food, but when that did not work, she called an ambulance.

Chanel says paramedics told her she would be receiving an award after they arrived.

Aaron says he was delighted, but not surprised,

by Chanel’s actions.

“I’m pretty impressed eh…She’s lived long

enough with me to know what to do, and for it to be second nature.”

St John in Schools educator Kathryn Halstead says Chanel showed “exceptional maturity for her age.”

She says her actions made it easier for paramedics to administer treatment.

“It’s always essential for us at St John to get first aid to the community.

“The time it takes for the ambulance to get to the scene can make all the difference.”

St John Marlborough territory manager Murray Neal agreed with her sentiments.

“Chanel did such a good job looking after her dad and staying calm under pressure.

“She had a plan about to give her dad sugar and when that didn’t work she went to the next step.

“She was able to give the crew really good information about what was wrong.”

By Jacob Page The brakes have been applied to Marlborough Netball’s proposed move to Lansdowne Park.

The MDC had all but rubber stamped the move and Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman had stated he wanted the move to happen as soon as next year.

A meeting on Monday night b e t we e n M D C o f f i c i a l s , Marlborough Netball’s Board and club delegates saw 50 people come along to hear the options.

The transfer from Horton Park to the sports hub being developed at Lansdowne has been proposed to allow netball to expand with more high-quality courts, some of them under cover, more space for players to warm-up and a safer level of buffer space between

The feasibility study says relocating to Lansdowne Park would provide space for three extra courts and enable sports codes to share other facilities.

However, the project would have to be staged over more than one season, with covered courts likely to be the last stage.

It is likely the matter would come before councillors for discussion on June 11.

If Marlborough Netball decided to make the move, further consultation would be required with other sports codes based at Lansdowne and with neighbouring residents.

Ross Charlton took a flight from Brisbane to Auckland when he and his partner, Jill, decided to move back to Picton after eight years across the Tasman.

Little did he know his flight home had been selected to participate in Gold Coast Tourism’s “Lucky Luggage” giveaway.

Lucky escape for police officer A Blenheim police officer narrowly avoided serious injury when an uprooted tree fell on his car on Monday.

The incident happened on State Highway 6 just past Havelock on Monday morning.

The officer was travelling from Blenheim to Nelson in an unmarked holden car when the tree landed on the front of it without warning

Determined not desperate Tactix return

By Jacob Page Don’t mention the word desperate to Mainland Tactix captain Anna Thompson.

Her team will venture to Blenheim for the second time this season still searching for its first win of 2015 when they face the red-hot Queensland Firebirds at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 on Sunday night.

The only surviving foundation member of the franchise accepts the team’s 0-11 season is not good but desperation was not the case against the table-topping Queenslanders.

“I wouldn’t say we are desperate but we are keen to try to become more consistent,” Thompson says.

The Tactix suffered a 68-49 loss to the New South Wales Swifts in Sydney last weekend, despite winning the final quarter by two goals.

“It shows that we can foot-it with teams for short periods but we

are searching for that 60-minute performance.”

Thompson says the team has had some “honest chats” about their failings and are trying to work out whether it is a mental shift or skill improvement they need most.

Malawi shooter Mwai Kumwenda has been shooting at more than 90 percent all season but shutting down the speedy Firebirds mid-court will be the main challenge as well as shutting down Jamaican goal shoot Romelda Aiken.

Thompson says Blenheim did feel like home when they played the West Coast Fever last month and she hoped a large crowd would show up again as the team searched for its first win with just two rounds remaining.

Frustration, phone calls and faxes to get internet back

By Jacob Page After more than a week without a home phone or internet, Mike Pink has had enough.

His Vodafone broadband and home phone line at his Ida Street address was unexpectedly cut off last Tuesday and persistent phone calls and faxes to the company failed to get him an accurate explanation as to why.

Mike says after calling Chorus he was informed there were no faults with the fibre and was told it was a Vodafone issue.

“I just can’t get through, I’ve even faxed them but I’m getting nowhere.

“I’m getting desperate...It is a personal internet connection but I use it to pay wages and do banking and go on TradeMe. “It’s been over a week and still no one can tell me what’s going on or when the problem is going

to be fixed.”

Dear Ed, When my old mate Bill rang to say he was going camping in the Rotunda for a week to highlight climate change I thought whatever floats your boat Bill go for it.

However, while driving past a couple of times during his stay I began to understand what he was on about.

After going past for the umpteenth time and seeing Bill sitting in his “eight coats and 27 Blankets” I could see what he was trying to achieve.

It was obvious that he was wanting global warming to get here as soon as possible, preferably an increase immediately of about 10 degrees.

So Bill just to let you know that I did my best, I went home straight away and tossed another bucket of coal on the fire!

NZ Post partners with Picton Fresh Choice New Zealand Post has announced Picton Fresh Choice will run over-the-counter banking, postal, courier and bill payment services on its behalf from September 21.

In May 2014, New Zealand Post told its staff, customers and the community of its intention to seek a local business to run services in Picton.

This is in response to the changing way customers are using New Zealand Post’s services and so it remains in good shape for the future.

New Zealand Post general manager for retail distribution Tracey Berry says Fresh Choice Supermarket at 100 High St, within Mariners Mall, is a good fit for its services.

“Our customers in Picton will be able to access all of the same over-the-counter banking, postal, courier and bill payment services they do today, just 50 metres from the existing PostShop.

“The PO Boxes will be relocated next to the supermarket. New Zealand Post will be writing to customers to let them know about the changes ahead of time.

“For more complex banking services, like applying for a home loan or opening a new bank account, customers can visit our Blenheim or Nelson PostShops or use phone or internet banking.

“New Zealand Post will have a banking consultant onsite ahead of the move to help its banking customers sign up for these services”.

Fresh Choice owners Hamish and Heide Watson say they look forward to working with New Zealand Post.

“For us it was about making sure Post’s services were still available in Picton. We are renovating Fresh Choice in July this year and will be taking over postal, courier and over-the-counter banking services at the same time,” says Hamish Watson.

“We have spent a lot of time developing a layout that will suit Post’s services. We are committed to making sure our core business will operate alongside Post as efficiently as possible.”

New Zealand Post is also working closely with its PostShop team.

“We are committed to supporting our team through this change. We appreciate this is an uncertain time and will be working to explore options for them,” Tracey Berry says.

The existing PostShop will close at 5pm on Friday September 18. Picton Fresh Choice Supermarket will begin delivering New Zealand Post and Kiwibank services from September 21. Until then, it is business as usual at the Picton PostShop.

I invited Nikki Dinmore, our bright young thing to write for me this month... It’s great to have a younger perspective.........

You will never guess what I found out? The month of May was named for the Greek Goddess Maia, identified with the Roman Goddess of fertility Bona Dea! This got me thinking about the new craze taking the world by storm......’push’ presents! (The ‘reward’ young mothers now plan on receiving for ‘pushing’ their new offspring into the world.) Who knows where it started but like everything – it’s been around before.

A couple of generations ago the Mother or Mother in law would slip the new mum a piece of heirloom jewellery while the proud new dad would give flowers. Fast-forward 20-30 years and it is now the father expected to give an extravagant present to the new mum.

There are a couple of interesting takes on today’s much talked about ‘push’ present.

Firstly the rich and famous are doing it - and boy do they do it well! Mariah Carey received a $12,000 diamond and pink sapphire necklace after giving birth to twins while Beyonce was gifted an 8-10 carat tanzanite ring.

The second - which makes more sense to me – is that 21st century men are much more aware and sympathetic with the pregnancy process.

It is a lifetime of passion stuck to each page and finally he and former Marlborough mayor Leo McKendry have put it together in a book called Garages of Marlborough.

“It got serious about 10 years ago,” John says of the book, “That’s when I decided if I don’t do something now then nobody will.

“I was born in Havelock… And I’m a boy from the sticks really, motor vehicles were pretty rare when I was growing up but I used to be able to mimic the engine sounds and change gears.

“They were my companions really and if something different went past where we

lived, you took a helluvan interest.

The 87-year-old has been a long serving member of the Marlborough branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand and would have been at the inaugural meeting of the club had he not had to fix a client’s refrigerator.

He has poured through old newspapers, researched advertisements and photographs and talked to descendants of early garage owners.

John and Leo worked together on the 150 Years of Marlborough book, so Leo was happy to join forces again.

“I helped put the book together but in reality I’ve just plagiarised John’s collection at his request,” Leo says.

The book looks at the humble beginnings of the Echo transporting tractors to Marlborough to the region’s first known motor garage, Parker’s in the early 20th century.

“A lot of the original horse and cart garages and then moved to push bike… but a lot of vehicles came through on the Echo until the 1960s.”

The book also covers influential families like the Parkers who had other business interests like the original picture theatre.

The book will be launched at the Marlborough Branch of the New Zealand Vintage Car Club at Brayshaw Park on May 27 at 11am.

“We have invited representatives of a number of the original garages…From our point of view it’s been quite rewarding that a lot of descendants want to be part of this,” Leo says.

John says voice recordings from people he interviewed will also be able to be heard but he was expecting even more information to come out once the book becomes public knowledge.

The Blenheim-based co-driver is set to help Paddon navigate around a new set of roads.

Most of the route is new for all World Rally Championship crews with a new base at Matosinhos, north of Porto, as the rally returns to the north of Portugal for the first time since 2001.

Paddon welcomes the opportunity for a more level playing field where prior experience on a particular rally’s special stages won’t count.

“It is a real level playing field being a new event for everyone and it’s at events such as this that we have to make the most of this kind of opportunity,” says Paddon as he joins the Hyundai Motorsport team in Matosinhos.

“John and I are always working hard on our pace note system and developing new ideas, so for Portugal this week we are focusing on having a really good recce and making good pace notes. If we can do that, then I believe we can chase a good result.”

As their experience in the Hyundai i20 WRC car continues to build, Paddon says he and Kennard have adapted their pace note system to include more speed information.

“This coupled with that we are being more aggressive with the car now and believing in its capabilities more does translate to also having more aggressive pace notes.”

Following the specialised snow event in Sweden and the two long haul events in Mexico and Argentina, Paddon says the return to the upcoming European gravel rallies of Portugal, Sardinia, Poland and Finland marks a significant point in his second season with the Hyundai Mobis World Rally Team.

“The next step for us this year is to start fighting more regularly in the top five. That is a big ask at this

level, but I’m backing John and me as being capable of doing this, and believe that Portugal will give us a good chance of this kind of result.”

Paddon and Kennard are one of 15 WRC crews competing in Portugal where they will complete reconnaissance on Tuesday and Wednesday this week before Thursday afternoon’s ceremonial start and an evening super special stage at Lousada rallycross circuit.

Friday’s route takes them north for six stages around Ponte de Lima, near the Spanish border.

On Saturday – the longest leg of the rally with six stages and 165 competitive kilometres – they head east onto the higher altitude

roads in the Serra do Marão mountains.

Sunday’s leg has just three stages, with the focus on the double run through classic Fafe test sandwiched around one of the event’s longest stages, the 32.35km Vieira do Minho test.

Crowds are expected to be huge throughout the event.

Paddon and Kennard have competed in Portugal three times previously – 2010, 2011 and 2012 – when their 2011 class victory made history as the biggest-ever winning margin in the production car category, and in 2012, the pair secured their first-ever SWRC category victory.

The Marlborough Representative indoor bowls team failed to hold on to the Adams Trophy, while the Ladies team was well beaten by Nelson and Golden Bay/Motueka in the Scott Trophy event.

The Adams Trophy was won by Golden Bay/Motueka with 80 points with Marlborough finishing runnerup with 69 points and Nelson with 67 points.

In the Scott Trophy, the Nelson women dominated to romp home with 92 points from Golden Bay/ Motueka on 69 with Marlborough on 55 points.

Both events were held at Simcox Stadium over the weekend.

Football Marlborough Development returned to winning ways, beating Nelson Suburbs 5-2 at A&P Park on Saturday afternoon.

In a senior division one upset, Central Pirates lost their first game in oneand-a-half seasons, beaten 3-2 by BV Development.

BV Masters and BV Cobras also won to make it a top-grade hat-trick for Blenheim Valley clubs.

Harriers Marlborough Harriers’ weekly club run leaves from the clubrooms at 6pm tomorrow night.

Their Saturday run starts at the Havelock campground at 2pm.

The Mount Vernon Grand Traverse, the club’s main fundraiser, takes place on June 14.

Special Olympics Rhys Thomason, who has swum for Special Olympics Marlborough for over 20 years, is retiring, and has been recognised for his achievement.

Thomason was presented with a certificate at the prizegiving following the Special Olympics aquatics meet held at Woodbourne on Sunday.

BV Dominators were one of Marlborough Football’s C Grade teams to receive a donation of boot bags from ASB Bank on the weekend.

Rhys’s coach Jenny Wills says he has been to ribbon days, regionals and national events around the country, and that he has been a valued team member.

“He’s always been a helpful member of the team, and he’s always done his best.

“He tells me he’s retiring because he’s getting older and he’s going to join a walking group to keep his exercise up.”

Marlborough came out on top over Nelson at the meet.

Murray wins top gong National rower Tom Murray has been awarded the Blenheim Rowing Club’s top award for 2015.

Murray was awarded the Clive Gregory Tankard award for rower of the year at the BRC’s prizegiving on Sunday.

Other winners included Callum Barker, who won the BRC Cup for most improved rower.

The Marlborough Boys’ College eight who won the Peter Ching Memorial as the best performed crew and Karmyn Ingram, who was awarded the President’s Cup as the club’s best all-round member.

The Wairau Taniwha had a bye last weekend, but play Tahunanui Tigers in Nelson in their next game on Saturday.

The game kicks off at 2:30pm.

Rugby Moutere won a thriller over Nelson in the latest round of Tasman Trophy matches played over the weekend.

Their 27-26 win in Nelson was one of two Marlborough wins over the weekend – Waitohi thumped Stoke 78-0.

With two rounds to go before the finals Waimea Old Boys leads the table on 44 points, 11 ahead of Wanderers. Central is the highest-placed Marlborough team in third.

Special Olympics Special Olympics Marlborough have organised two sausage sizzles to raise funds for those affected by the Nepal earthquakes.

The sausage sizzles are being held at The Warehouse on Queen’s Birthday Weekend, Saturday, May 30 and Monday, June 1.
