By Damian George New Zealand fire service chief executive Peter Dempsey wants the harshest possible punishment dished out to a mob of attackers who ambushed four volunteer firefighters in Havelock on Sunday morning. The volunteers were called out to what they thought was a car crash early in the morning, before being caught up in an attack which saw one man kicked in the head. “I think the police and the courts should take the strongest action possible under the law, Mr Dempsey says. “Our concern here is that these people trying to

incident, such as a nasty injury or fatality, Mr Dempsey says. “Those services are in place but the word from the Havelock brigade is they’ve got it under control and haven’t needed to utilise those facilities yet. He says, on the positive side, this incident is one out of the blue, and it is not a common thing for “our guys to come under this sort of attack. Three people have been arrested in relation to the incident, on charges of disorderly behaviour, and will appear in Blenheim district court next Tuesday. Constable Michelle Stagg says further charges are likely once enquiries have been completed.
