Fine weather and close racing was the order of the two-day harness race meeting on the grass at Waterlea racecourse. It was a great two days of racing on Friday and Sunday with plenty of close finishes and with many upsets providing patrons with good dividends. Last year’s meeting had a 12 race programme on both days, but this year it were restricted to an 11 race day programme for each day. Continued on page 2. Rare fish sighted in QCS A chance viewing of an extremely rare fish on the television news turned into a real-life experience for a Blenheim fisherman at the weekend. Shawn Purser, of Springlands, was watching the television news last week when a story of an Australian marine scientist appeared, saying how stunned she was to see an extremely rare Blanket Octopus in the Great Barrier Reef. On Saturday, taking part in the South Island Spearfishing Competition, Shawn was amazed to see an identical fish swimming around him and his diving partner, Donald McDonald, in the south-east entry to Queen Charlotte Sound. He estimated the brightly coloured female to be about 1.5m. As it was constantly changing its shape it was hard to estimate its width, he said, but it swam around the two divers before swimming away. The extremely rare ‘rainbow like’ Blanket Octopus generally spends its lifecycle out in the deep ocean. “It hung around us for about 10 minutes and we were following, taking pics on my GoPro,” he said. “It was so graceful and colourful it was an amazing experience to see this rare fish.” Shawn said it was an incredible co-incidence that he had seen the story on the news about the scientist having seen one for the first time. “All of a sudden, a couple of days later, there I am experiencing the very same thing during our spear fishing completion.” Shawn who won the Masters division of the competition.

Cruel attack on cat By Chris Valli
A Blenheim cat owner has been left distraught after discovering her cat has been shot at. 10 year old Minka, a female tabby was shot in or around the Graham Street, Mayfield area. Last seen by owner Cassarnda North last week the tabby found her way back home on Wednesday (12th) night. “She generally chills out somewhere by herself during the day, then comes home in the evenings for dinner. When she didn’t come home it was very unusual of her. I had tried to call out for her but there was no response.” Cassarndra noticed Minka stumbling up the steps and her back leg hanging when she greeted her Wednesday night. “It was one of the worst feelings seeing my fur baby stumble up the steps. I thought she was
Cassarnda North
just being clumsy but when I turned to pick her up I saw how skinny she was and her back left leg was just lifeless. I burst into tears.” Cassarndra assumed she may have been stuck on a fence or hit by something and the thought of someone having hurt her intentionally never crossed her mind. She took Minka to Vets Marl-
borough after hours last Wednesday (12th) where the staff stabilised the back leg and administered pain relief. Subsequent X rays were taken to discover a bullet lodged in her leg. “The vet showed me the x-ray and said I’d be shocked to hear it but she (Minka) had been shot!” The outcome is Minka will have her left back leg amputated. She has heard of multiple missing cats via social media and shootings of cats and unexplainable harm done last year. However, she never thought it would happen to her own. Cassarndra had not yet been to the police to report the incident as she was waiting on upcoming surgery for Minka and for the bullet to be extracted by Vets Marlborough.
BROKEN: Minka the cat’s left back leg which will be amputated after being shot.
Ultimately she says a positive outcome for her and her family was to potentially move from the Graham
Street area and find ‘the idiot’ who caused such harmless and unnecessary damage to her feline friend.

metres. The basic $40,000 stake has been boosted by sponsorship from KAM Transport to take the race stake to $60,000. Marlborough Racing Club President, John O’Brien, says while the club is disappointed it can no longer have a race meeting in Blenheim,
the club is committed to the sport and is pleased to promote the Marlborough Cup with KAM Transport’s support at Riccarton Park, Christchurch the home of southern racing. Trainer Kevin Meyers from Wanganui has been a big supporter of the Marlbor-
ough Racing Club and still sends horses to race in the Marlborough Cup. Last year the Marlborough Cup was won by Rainbird trained by John and Karen Parsons at Balcairn, North Canterbury. The Marlborough Cup now attracts a good size field of
open class racehorses. Anyone interested in attending this meeting on Saturday January 29 should contact secretary Lynn McIntosh the Club Secretary at Waterlea Racecourse, Phone: 03 5788599 or email waterlearaceway@xtra. co.nz.

reDwOOD Local actor and journalist Chris Valli is part of the barricade and ensemble for Blenheim Musical Theatre’s production of Les Misérables in May 2022. Chris is writing a weekly column for The Blenheim Sun newspaper about the rehearsal process, the backstory and context of Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel and insights into the theatrical phenomenon. I was asked by the production manager to write how the show is progressing. So I asked a fellow cast member who replied: “It’s a privilege to convey the story through song isn’t it? The emotional rollercoaster that we are all on.” Sunday was a ‘boot camp’. An opportunity to continue to work with those we already know and those we didn’t. A marshmallow challenge (teams compete to build the tallest freestanding structure using pasta sticks and marshmallow) in the morning followed by lip syncing to a chosen team song - and there were some rippas - before lunch. Creativity and freedom of expression were to the fore - it’s always the quiet ones you have to watch aye? Conversation, context, close proximity. Blocking scenes and a focus on the power of movement, of subtleties, of nuances as a character and respective group scenes. The what, the how and the why of performance. The word drama comes from the Greek ‘to do’ or ‘to act.’ To create a semblance of reality in a portrayal of characters in order for an audience to relate. I’d go further with this definition as Les Misérables has many layers which require multi sensorial experiences through to social, cultural and political awareness. Combined with prosodic features - diction, tone, pitch, pace etc and progression begins to take shape, form and purpose. And yes, the cast answered the call to the
progressive ethos of teamwork through making mistakes, laughing, learning and leaving our comfort zones. The emotion and connection of blocking Gavroche being shot on the barricade? I mean, he dies. Gavroche - used as a synonym for urchin or street child, who shares in the ideology of the friends of the ABC. There were tears, heartfelt ones, a backstory taking the shape of losing a fallen comrade and pausing, reflecting to take the time to acknowledge his death and the likelihood that all the students on the barricade are to face their own deaths. Heartfelt. Authentic. The contrast - or should that be the colour - of One Day More. The soft introduction sung by Jean Valjean, ‘Another Day, Another Destiny. This never-ending road to Calvary (Jerusalem). ‘The learning that this song is about contrast, tone, tempo and a finish which will leave Blenheim audiences reaching for their tissues at intermission. So how is the show progressing? Best BMT recommends ticket holders to not only bring their vaccine passports but their holistic and spiritual passports to Lyon and Paris - one way. Do you hear the people sing? They are local and homegrown - that’s our point of difference - our own revolution. The cast of May 2022. Les Misérables will be performed at the ASB Theatre from Wednesday, May 18 May 28, 2022. Tickets can be purchased at the ASB Theatre.

So please everybody get vaccinated. Beware you anti vaxers, stop just thinking about yourselves, spoiling it for all of us who care about each other and who have been vaccinated. Thank you to all in New Zealand who are now having or had their booster, caring for themselves, family and others around them. He korero no te Kaunihera o Wairau NEWS FROM THE MARLBOROUGH DISTRICT COUNCIL
How’s your health, Blenheim and Picton?
School up on road access
Everyone needs a check-up from time to time – and the Blenheim and Picton town centres are no exception. Every two years the Council ‘takes the temperature’ of the central business districts in the region’s largest towns by way of the Marlborough Town Centre Health Check Survey. “The Marlborough Town Centre Health Check is a snapshot in time of how the Blenheim and Picton CBDs are performing,” said Blenheim Ward councillor and CBD portfolio holder Brian Dawson. “This involves analysing how well the towns are functioning through various indicators, one of which is this survey.” The aim is to gain an insight into the views and thoughts on the Marlborough Town Centres from both residents and visitors, said Councillor Dawson. The survey is anonymous, contains 14 short questions and takes five minutes
If you’re planning on visiting the Sounds or Awatere Valley this summer, it’s important to check the status of the roads. To help, the Marlborough Roads Recovery Team (MRRT) and the Council have an easy-to-use factsheet for visitors to navigate key roading and recovery information. The region is still dealing with disruption to its roading network due to slips, washouts and other road hazards resulting from the flooding of 17 July 2021. Repairs are ongoing but full access in some areas is not expected to be restored until 2023. The local recovery transition period from the region’s state of emergency has been extended for a further 28 days owing to the ongoing recovery requirements. It covers the Wairau/ Awatere Ward and Marlborough Sounds Ward. This week crews restarted work in the recovery areas. There will be stop/go restrictions on the roads in the recovery areas. Then, from Monday 24 January, daytime construction closures (9.00 am to 3.00 pm or 8.00 am to 5.00 pm depending on the site) will re-start on weekdays. “While many tourism operators are open for business, it’s important that visitors check road access, transport options and any restrictions on the
to complete. Respondents have one month to participate before the survey closes on Friday 18 February at 5.00 pm. Topics includes reasons for visiting the CBD, travel modes, parking, ease of access, ideas for improvements, satisfaction with services available, and the attractive and less attractive parts of each town centre. “We want residents and visitors to have their say on the positive and negative features within the two CBDs. These responses can then be used to identify any future improvements that could be made to ensure that our CBDs are performing at their best,” said Clr Dawson. A report detailing the findings of the ‘health check’ will be released to the public once completed. To complete the survey, go to: https:// www.surveymonkey.com/r/ MarlHealthCheck21-22
area they are planning to visit,” said Marlborough Recovery Manager Marianne Aitken. “Some key roads, including the Awatere Valley Road and some parts of Kenepuru Road, are ‘Controlled Access’, which means there are restrictions on who can access them and when,” she said. “Only Resident or Essential Service Pass holders are allowed to drive through the Controlled Access areas along Kenepuru Road.” There is currently no public access through the Awatere Valley. The Acheron Road through Molesworth is open, but it can only be reached from the southern end via Hanmer Springs. While some areas are still quite green they can quickly dry out after a period of warm, windy weather. A recipe for navigating tough times The irrepressible Jo Chamberlain of Blenheim, educational leader, mentor, designer and now real estate agent, has created a life surrounded by beauty, love, friendship and fun. Here she talks to Glenise Dreaver on navigating challenges and building that good life. “Life’s for living!” says Jo. ”You’re a long time dead!” That said, she readily adds: “But life can be hard. “You can have your ups and downs, but what’s important is how you deal with that. It’s about being resilient and seeking new opportunities - after you’ve had the inevitable initial cry and scream of course!” She’s had her fair share of the “downs”. Early lessons in her adult life in the South included the sadness and stresses of a collapsed farming venture in the early 80s, a broken marriage, then twelve years ago, the huge shock of a breast cancer diagnosis. “And it was a nasty one.” That was, Jo says, a wake up call. “To say the least!” “The year-long battle was taxing, but I’m still here to tell the tale - and dangerous!” she laughs. “Lucky too!” Right through this and afterwards, she continued with her roles at Marlborough Girls’ College, as Deputy Principal, then Co-Principal, then Acting Principal. As much as she loved it, she decided however, not to apply for the permanent principal’s role. ”It was time for a change.” Leaving a job she was passionate about, her life’s vocation, wasn’t easy but, Jo says, “I was always telling teenagers to ‘Have a go!’ “It was time to take my own advice.” And with partner Murray Hewson having completed 27 years as principal of Witherlea Primary School they decided to leave educational leadership and further develop their boutique accommodation business ‘Magic in Marlborough’.
It was based around using their spacious family home ,‘Beautiful Bungalow’, in Blenheim, with its beautifully landscaped gardens, its pool and its adjacent studio ‘Boutique Bunker’ which they used themselves when it wasn’t booked, and when the main home was let. There was also their holiday home in Nelson. Jo’s design skills had been honed throughout her life and already put to good use with several homes being remodelled and landscaped before moving on. “I just adore design and creativity in all things. “Thinking outside the square is such fun and a challenge which I relish” House, garden, developing their own businesses’ social media, all demonstrate her love of style and dedication to aesthetics and perfection. So Jo and Murray’s ‘Magic in Marlborough’ drew high levels of interest from overseas, and excellent reviews from their guests. Jo had earlier ventured into a small business in her early 20s attempting to stay afloat during those early farming days. “I had a line of mainly leather clothing that I made and sold under my own label called ‘Pepe’. I sold a bit of stuff, especially in Queenstown.” This time round, with sound technological skills reaching the international market, their business had good bookings lined up from overseas. What could go wrong? Covid could. All the bookings disappeared overnight with many thousands in advance payments having to be
repaid. “Ok. You have a setback. You’ve got to pick yourself up, be creative, see the subsequent opportunities …” “You also need to look at what your transferable skills are and have the courage to make a change.” On day one of lockdown she and Murray decided to use the downtime to study by distance learning, gaining their real estate qualifications. “Five to six hours each day and it was nailed!” Teachers can bring to such a business the value that they place in people, and in meaningful relationships, says Jo. “Establishing people’s needs and having a genuine desire to help them is a must for me. Helping them clarify their whys, what’s and how - and helping them achieve the potential in their properties, presenting and marketing them to get the best result is a huge privilege and responsibility. “I get a heck of a lot of pleasure from that.” She also admits loving the challenge, the cut and thrust of negotiation. “It really rings my bells! “I’m also very ambitious, in a quiet sort of way, which helps. I always want to do my very best.” She says the freedom of driving your own business is something she really enjoys after a lifetime of working in education, which can be quite institutionalised. And despite predictions to the contrary, she says their local team is finding the market here very buoyant. “People are definitely on the move.
Jo Chamberlain: “Life’s for living!” “Murray and I currently have many Auckland buyers, just over big city life, and extended families and their best friends wanting a better quality of life here. Prospective buyers are coming in nationwide, and so are expats, not least Australia, Her own former students also check in. “Hi Chambo! (affectionately) or just Ms Chamberlain - I need your help!’ She points out that having fun,

enjoying what you’re doing, is important. And staying resilient in these changing times is, says Jo, about reviewing your goals regularly and staying upbeat. “Keep smiling, singing and dancing!” Change is, she says, a constant, to be embraced. “And excellence in our lives well lived is the responsibility we each have.”

It also improves both strength and mobility. Short walks a few times a day can make a big difference. So get your friends or even family members together and make a weekly plan to walk or join a fitness class.

Vitamins and minerals for older adults Vitamins and minerals are two of the main types of nutrients that your body needs to survive and stay healthy. Vitamins help your body grow and work the way it should. There are 13 essential vitamins — vitamins A, C, D, E, K, and the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, B6, B12, and folate). Vitamins have different jobs to help keep the body working properly. Some vitamins help you resist infections and keep your nerves healthy; while others may help your body get energy from food or help your blood clot properly. By following professional dietary advice you can get enough of most of these vitamins from food. Like vitamins, minerals also help your body function. Minerals are elements that our bodies need to function that can be found on the earth and in foods. Some minerals, like
iodine and fluoride, are only needed in very small quantities. Others, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, are needed in larger amounts. As with vitamins, if you eat a varied diet, you will probably get enough of most minerals. How can I get the vitamins and minerals I need? It is usually better to get the nutrients you need from food, rather than a pill. That’s because nutrient-dense foods contain other things that are good for you, like fibre. Most older people can get all the nutrients they need from foods. But if you aren’t sure, talk with your doctor or a registered dietitian to find out if you are missing any important vitamins or minerals. He or she may recommend a vitamin or dietary supplement. If you do need to supplement your diet, look for a supplement that contains the vitamin
or mineral you need without a lot of other unnecessary ingredients. Read the label to make sure the dose is not too large. Avoid supplements with mega-doses. Too much of some vitamins and minerals can be harmful, and you might be paying for supplements you don’t need. Your doctor or pharmacist can recommend brands that fit your needs. Here’s a tip: Different foods in each food group have different nutrients. Picking an assortment within every food group throughout the week will help you get many nutrients. For example, choose seafood instead of meat twice a week. The variety of foods will make your meals more interesting, too.

IS YOUR HEAT PUMP MAKING YOU SICK? A poorly maintained heat pump not only is very bad for your health, it also costs you more money to operate.
Council are hoping for minimum traffic disruption.
Future-proofing essential services Infrastructure works to support the future expansion of housing and other developments in the Springlands area in north-west Blenheim began last week. The water main running underneath Murphys Road between Old Renwick and Middle Renwick roads is being replaced and a new sewer line will also be built. Marlborough Lines is also installing new underground cabling. Council projects engineer Mark Power says the works are being planned and coordinated to minimise disruption for local residents and commuters. “We don’t expect to fully close Murphy’s Road, but it will be down to one lane from time to time over the next nine months.” “With infrastructure works of this scale it’s important that all the contractors work closely together and carefully plan the work. We also want to let people know what is happening in advance and when you can expect to see traffic restrictions.” “We are working with local businesses, Springlands Primary School and the kindergarten to minimise disruption for customers and the community.” Council’s main contractor for the works is
CMT Group NZ Ltd. Planned lane closure dates are: Northbound lane, Middle Renwick Road to Ward Street - January 1 to February 2, and over the school holidays between 19 April 19 and 9 May 9. Southbound lane from Ward Street to Roseneath Lane: 3 February 3 to March 11, southbound lane from Roseneath Lane to Old Renwick Road March14 to April 14. A water shutdown during the week beginning March 21 will affect some properties. These dates are indicative and subject to change and further information will be provided as the works progress. Marlborough Lines’ upgrade will improve its network security and allow for load growth in the area. As part of its work, provision is being made for the eventual undergrounding of the power lines along Murphys Road. One of the first developments to benefit from the upgrades will be the new Summerset retirement village on Old Renwick Road. In addition, a large number of new housing developments are expected in Springlands over the next 30 years, which will be serviced by the new infrastructure.
Mark from Airify Marlborough will perform not just a filter clean, but a deep clean and sanitisation that will clear blockages in the coils, and remove dirt, dust, bacteria and mold. Your health will thank you for it!

Young locals in ‘high energy’ musical By Chris Valli
Marlborough Academy of Music’s production of Disney’s High School Musical Junior is set to take to the ASB Theatre stage this weekend. The production is part of the inaugural Summer Holiday Programme for 8-16 year olds and designed to give kids a thorough experience of all things theatre with the students involved in every part of the show. Director Alison Dight chose the show due to its high energy and contemporary storyline that resonates with all walks of life. “High School Musical Junior was the perfect choice for me. It’s high energy Disney with lots of fun and interesting topics. I particularly like the song “We’re All In This Together” as it culminates the show’s theme no matter your beliefs, interests, or cliques. The story centres on the relationship between Troy, a high school jock and Gabriella, the new smart girl at school. Full of catchy songs and exciting dance routines, the musical explores issues of friendship, first love, and acceptance. Alison says the children involved in the show have worked extremely hard. “Over a period of two weeks, the kids have learnt the entire show. They have had a lot of fun over the last week and I can’t wait for the community to see them shine.” The initiative behind Marlbor-
Sage Johnson, Gabriella Pederson and Lily Parker.
Marlborough Academy of Music - High School Musical Junior Cast.
ough Academy of Music came about due to a gap in the performing arts scene, and the fruition of a long held dream for Alison. “We’re blessed in Marlborough to have some fabulous dance schools. However there’s a real gap when it comes to learning to play an instrument or sing. The Music Academy is looking to provide lessons for many different instruments, from voice, to piano, guitar, drums, violin. You name it and we’ll try our best to find you a tutor.” The next crop of Marlborough’s
Performing Arts scene are to the fore in the production. None more so than Jed Cornelius, Sienna Wheeler and James Dight in their respective lead roles as Troy, Sharpay and Ryan. All three are juggling their commitments with this show and Blenheim Musical Theatre’s upcoming production of Les Misérables in May. “Riley Houia joins us from Nelson for the camp and plays our Gabriella. It’s hard to point out any kids that stand out as we’ve just been so lucky to have incredible talent join us this year.
Eight year old Lily Parker is all focus.
There are some really great moments that will touch your heart,” Alison says. Two local performers have taken on the role of mentors for their services to this production. Former Marlborough Girls student Amy Potts is the show’s choreographer and is currently studying a Bachelor of Performing Arts through National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA) in Christchurch. Meanwhile, Ella Kernick Harvey, who performed as Megan Trainor in Stars in their Eyes charity event
last August, is helping out with the vocal side of the production. “They’ve really pulled together helping each other. I’ve had the best team of tutors to work with in Amy, Ella, Louisa Thomson and (pianist) Ian Clarkson. They’ve made my life much easier and we’ve really bonded.” The show is on at the McLauchlan Family Auditorium at the ASB Theatre with two shows on Friday, January 21 at 1:30pm and 6:30pm and one show on Saturday, January 22 at 1:30pm.

txt talk with The Sun Very impressed This a shout out to the manager and staff at recently opened Gohan Restaurant and Takeaways in Scott Street. What delicious food, friendly staff and great atmosphere. If you haven’t eaten there, I totally recommend you do! Well done, Gohan!
Lovely gentlemen I would like to thank Andy and Dave who work for the council for coming to my rescue on December 22 at the council carpark building. I had hit the curb and my front tyre basically exploded. They very kindly offered to put my spare on for me. They were terrific men, it’s lovely to know there are still so many kind people out there.
Re: How rude Excuse me mam but I’m sure it is rude to pull the finger in Vanuatu. The actions of one man do not represent the people. God bless you.
Nice to see Thanks to the family who included the photo of the late Welly Munro in the Sun death notices. A lovely appreciated gesture. Would be nice to see other do it. We often remember faces but can’t recall a name.
Well done team A big thank you to Ben and the team at ANZ Bank. Fantastic service and friendliness with opening our accounts and a big thanks to the bank teller Kylee, a helpful friendly face.
Why so many? Has anyone else noticed the hideous pigeon poop on buildings around town, especially some along Queen Street.
Re: Nurses HDU moved into a ward for lack of staffing. Nurses leaving due to being understaffed and lack of support from above, yet management say all is good, nothing to see here. Watch what happens when Omicron hits, management will be nowhere to be seen. Give the nurses the support they need and deserve.
Tough feet Do people realise that dogs’ feet have pads and are created to enable them to walk in all temperatures. It is the same for humans that never wear shoes eg aborigines walk in the Australian desert (even during the day) without shoes as the skin on the soles of their feet become thicker.
Slow down I live down Adams Lane, every day there’s some cars speeding down there like no tomorrow. Am so shocked that it’s every day, there are a lot of people, families and dogs, taking their daily walks, it’s so dangerous!
Horrible Xmas lunch Very upset Xmas day all the family were booked into a local establishment at $145 each. Meat was raw, vegetables weren’t cooked properly. Never again.
You seriously have to wonder how these anti vaxer’s brains work. They seem to have complete disregard for the environment we live in and are now spray painting anti vax slogans on the bark of the beautiful old trees down the Taylor reserve. Our trees need to be protected not defaced by these selfish, obviously uncaring individuals who seem to have totally lost the plot.
To the author of that text, very shallow thinking you have. Are you aware of the time and money put into these events. The organisation involved by all concerned. I thought your text very nasty and insensitive.
Get vaccinated Our hospital staff, medical professionals and families, take huge risks when you expect them to care for you when you contract Covid. It’s not about selfish individual choice, it’s all about protecting each other and our communities.
Re: Gangs I am sick of all these gangs reply in the paper. They have a right to live wherever they like just like the rest of us. If you leave them alone they will leave you alone. So come on give them a break.
Re: Not thought through I do enjoy the weekly Txt Talk page but I wonder ... for 2022, let’s try and focus on positive things rather than all this moaning. Practice gratitude rather than contempt. You will feel so much better for it!
Honest person I would like to thank the kind person who handed in my wallet I had dropped at the New World supermarket last Friday morning. You saved an 80 year old lady a lot of worry. Bless you.
Went to buy two tickets for Blenheim Musical Theatre’s Les Miserables and it came to $160.90 for two tickets! For an amateur show that’s very steep and I suspect unaffordable for most, including us. Won’t be going to see that one.
Keep up the great work I look forward to my copy of the SUN every week. Always so full of great local stories. Still number one in my book.

Thank you so much A big thank you to the lovely young lady who came to help me when I fell down steps at the race course grandstand on Sunday and great ambulance crew.
Always something We live rural and can’t get mail so we have till now been allocated a free PO Box. Just got a bill in the mail for $170! We still pay rates for no services. The downside of living in the country but still worth it.

Re: Nurses I would like to point out that the 10 nurses chose to end their employment at the DHB and let down the team. There are always policies/standards/requirements to meet in being a productive member of society. Wairau staff are doing a great job at ensuring that services are still running, with team work.
I am enjoying reading Les Mis column by Chris Valli. Is a real insight into the process. Well done all those involved.
Roll on 2022 I hope everyone had a great silly season with lots of sunshine and family time. I am glad Covid stayed away and may it be a fantastic 2022 for all.

Mel Biggs New Home Consultant, Jennian Homes Marlborough Are you a dog or cat person? Probably more of a dog person although I only have a cat at the moment. What did you want to be when you grew up? Initially a child psychologist or preschool teacher although I do remember designing my dream home as a child and I get to do lots of home design now so maybe this is what I was meant to do all along. Not quite a hidden talent, but I’m very good at? Party planning. I love a good get together and enjoy organising everything to ensure everyone has fun. If you could donate $1m to any charity who would it be and why? A hard choice between Hospice Marlborough and Bowel Cancer New Zealand. Having lost someone very special who was only 31 years old, this silent killer needs more research and awareness. My all-time favourite food is? Definitely my mums lasagna, you can’t beat the traditional homemade recipes. The shop you can’t walk past is? Paper Plus which is way more than just a book store (great gift ideas, toys and games). I can spend hours browsing through all the books and knick knacks there. What song is likely to get you on the dance floor? I absolutely love to dance so usually anything but ‘Don’t stop the music’ by Rihanna is one of my favourites. Your dream weekend involves? Sunshine, fishing down the sounds and spending time with my family and friends – ideally all of these at the same time. If you could meet anyone in history who would it be and why? There are very dear people who I would love to see again but in terms of someone new in history, Freddy Mercury. Such raw talent and an absolute legend who had so much vision and determination despite his setbacks. Favourite programme or series currently watching? New Amsterdam – love to watch a good hospital drama. What’s one thing on your bucket list? I would love to go on a Salsa dancing holiday in Cuba. Meet new people, an amazing experience – sums up what life should be all about!
Protecting your sprays: By Wally Richards If you are like myself I only spray my plants and gardens as I need to for any problems that occur (insect pests and diseases). On the other hand I don’t mind spraying liquid plant foods and products such as Magic Botanic Liquid and Mycorrcin as they are beneficial to the health of the plants and give far better results from their weekly or two weekly sprays. I also don’t mind using safe to use sprays such as Liquid Copper, Super Neem oil, Super Pyrethrum and Sulphur sprays if and when there is a reason to do so. Seldom do I do a prevention spray program to avoid a seasonal problem such as aphids, curly leaf etc unless it is essential. For instance this season from last winter through to harvest I used the Cell Strengthening sprays on my garlic to see how effective it was to prevent the devastating Garlic Rust problem. I am happy to say that I have now harvested by garlic and had no sign of any rust at all. The bulbs are of a medium size not as big as I would have liked but I put that down to the difficulty of getting good seed. But it is great to have my own home grown garlic again. One of the problems when you use any type of spray is that rain or watering can dilute the spray on the foliage making the spay less effective. For instance if you are spraying Wallys Liquid Copper to protect against various diseases or to control a disease problem and a few days later it rains then when the rain has finished you need to spray the copper again to re-instate your protection. If when you made up the copper spray you had added Raingard at the rate of 1ml per litre of spray then your spray would not be diluted or washed off in the rain and be in place for up to 14 days. That saves a lot of work and money. If you use chemical herbicides and you add Raingard to the spray it will increase your spray effectiveness by about 50 percent. The reason is that Raingard acts as a chemical bridge allowing the herbicide to enter the foliage making for a quicker more effective kill of the weeds.
Many years ago I learnt some interesting information about the weed killer Roundup from reading what used to be a little booklet that was supplied with 20 litre containers of Roundup. The small 200ml bottles of Roundup and similar glyphosate herbicides state a rate of 10mls per litre of water. In the commercial booklet 10mls was only used on the hardest to kill weeds and the booklet gave information on different types of weeds down to as low as 1ml per litre of water. Even at 5mls per litre of water it would kill most common weeds. If you were to add Raingard to the Roundup spray you could for many weeds use only a couple of mls per litre of water. I don’t recommend the use of glyphosate unless there is no other practical solution to a weed problem but by reducing the amount per litre you are reducing the harm to the environment and yourself and that can be simply done by adding Raingard. Here is my very old blurb sheet on Raingard: Raingard is an Organic or Natural biodegradable terpenic polymer. (made from pine resin). Raingard does four jobs when mixed with most garden sprays including herbicides. Like similar products eg Sprayfix, Raingard spreads and sticks the spray particles over foliage giving a better coverage. But Raingard goes two steps further and used at the recommended rate of only 1ml per litre of spray it will rain-proof the spray for up to 14 days in average conditions and average rain fall. This means that the particles of spray are being slowly released from the film Raingard has over the foliage over the 14 days. Because Raingard locks spray particles on foliage for 14 days, then on food crops, any toxic sprays combined with Raingard should allow the 14 days withholding period or if the toxic spray has a longer withholding period, then the longest period would apply. If using Raingard with Neem products or sulphur sprays, then as neither Neem or sulphur are
toxic, the withholding period is not important. But if using a Copper spray, a 14 day period should be applied to food crops as copper is toxic. Raingard saves you time and money as it removes the need to re-spray every time it rains or you water. Raingard acts also as a bridge for systemic sprays and greatly aids these types of sprays entry into the foliage. Used with herbicides it will increase the effectiveness of the weed killer, often resulting (from trials) a 50 percent better result, when compared to not using Raingard. Raingard is more effective (to my knowledge) than Pulse to aide Roundup into shiny or hairy leaf plants. It is interesting to note that Raingard used with say Roundup you can reduce the amount of Roundup needed to get the same results. Instead of 10ml of Roundup to the litre, try 5ml and Raingard. Some weeds may need this stronger solution but most will die from the suggested combination. It is also interesting to note that another one of our Organic products, Mycorrcin if added to the mix of Roundup and Raingard will also assist with a better and now faster kill as the Mycorrcin will assist in the breakdown of the dying foliage, cleaning up the area quicker. You might like to try this as a ‘less harmful to the environment’ weed killer, 3ml of Roundup, 5ml of Mycorrcin Plus and 1ml of Raingard into one litre of water. You should find that this will kill most weeds without having to increase the amount of Roundup. As the Mycorrcin stimulates the soil life and beneficial fungi it offsets the damage that herbicides do to the soil and worms.

Managing high cholesterol What is cholesterol and why is high cholesterol bad for you? Find out how high cholesterol can affect your heart and how to lower it. What is cholesterol? Cholesterol (matū ngako) is a fat-like substance in your blood. It comes from two places: Some is made naturally by your liver, and some comes from the food you eat. Cholesterol isn’t always ‘bad’. Your body needs some cholesterol to work properly. It uses it to develop cells and hormones, and to process and digest fats. But, if the amount of cholesterol in the blood gets too high, it can cause a heart attack or stroke. Types of cholesterol There are two types of cholesterol: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL cholesterol). LDL cholesterol is sometimes called ‘bad

cholesterol’. When you have too much LDL cholesterol it builds up in the arteries (the blood vessels that carry blood and oxygen around the body). The build-up of cholesterol causes lumps of hard fat called plaque to form on the artery walls. These can break off, block the artery, and cause heart attacks and strokes. HDL cholesterol is the ‘good’ cholesterol. It works like a cleaner, carrying LDL cholesterol out of the arteries to your liver, where it is broken down and used by the body. Triglycerides are another type of fat in your blood. When we eat or drink our body turns any energy (calories) that it doesn’t need into triglycerides, which are then stored in fat cells. Triglyceride levels normally rise after we’ve eaten, but when we consume more energy than our body needs they stay at a high level, rather than returning to normal. This is particularly true if our diet includes lots of refined sugar. This includes foods high in added sugar, like sweets, baked goods and chocolate, low fibre carbohydrates, like white bread, and alcohol and fizzy drinks, which include lots of extra sugar. Like cholesterol, high triglycerides can increase the amount of plaque (hard fat) in the artery walls. The only way to measure cholesterol is to get a blood test. Sometimes your doctor will call this blood test a ‘lipid profile’ or ‘lipid test’. Lipid is another word for fat, so this test includes your cholesterol and your triglyceride levels.
A few changes in your diet can reduce cholesterol and improve your heart health.
When should I get my cholesterol levels checked? If you haven’t had a cholesterol test before, talk to your doctor or nurse about when you should have one. If you’re at higher risk of heart attack or stroke because of your or family’s health history, then you may need one at a younger age. Cholesterol tests are given routinely as part of a heart health check.
Lifestyle changes for a healthier heart Risk factors you can change Too much food high in saturated fats, like red meat, butter, cream, and other dairy products. Too many foods with refined sugars, such as sweets, baked goods, white bread and fizzy drinks Too much alcohol Not being active enough each day Smoking Having too much body fat, especially around the middle How to lower cholesterol If you have high cholesterol, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, medications or both. Here are some ways to manage your cholesterol. Eat heart-healthy food. What you eat can make a big difference to your cholesterol levels. Cut back on foods high in saturated fats like pies, cakes, and chips. And eat a wide variety of heart-healthy foods like whole grains, nuts and seeds, fruits and vegetables, and oily fish. Drink less alcohol because too much can increase your LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. So drinking less is a good way to lower your cholesterol. Quit smoking. Smoking makes your LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol)
stickier and reduces the amount of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) in your blood. It also damages the artery walls. This increases the build-up of plaque in your arteries and can cause risk of heart attack and stroke. Quitting smoking is a great way to lower your cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of heart disease. Move more. Sitting less and being more active are great ways to reduce high cholesterol. This doesn’t mean you have to join a gym or take up running – it just means you need to move your body more throughout the day. Ideally you should do 30 minutes of activity a day. You could try using the stairs not the lift, parking 10 minutes away from your work or getting off the bus a stop early, walking the dog twice around the park instead of once, taking a walk outside during a break at work, having a swim or walk at the beach with family, and doing half an hour of gardening or cleaning. Cholesterol medication. Your doctor may recommend that you take medication to lower your cholesterol. If you take this medication as directed it helps lower your chance of having a heart attack or stroke.

Rosco raises Black Caps to new heights Cricket in New Zealand has grown up with Ross Taylor. That’s the best way I can sum-up Taylor’s foot-print on the game in this country. When he arrived on the international scene as a dashing, hard-hitting batsman in 2006, his talent was raw, unrefined yet undeniable. As he exited his final test last week, he did so knowing he had left the Black Caps in far better shape than when he first donned the silver fern. New Zealand on the global stage
have earned a level of legitimacy they have not had before. Not even during the Hadlee-filled 1980s New Zealand teams was cricket in this country as respected as it is today and Taylor has had a lot to do with it. That respect happens when you make back-to-back 50-over World Cup finals, tie one (yes we did), win the first World Test Championship final and even though he wasn’t part of it, make the final of the Twenty20 World Cup.
With Taylor’s help, New Zealand is no longer seen as a bunch of battlers who will give teams a good go on home soil but generally fail away from home. Now, we have a phenomenal home record and have had some big overseas triumphs against the likes of Pakistan and England. Taylor has been a huge part of that. Even during the captaincy drama with Brendon McCullum and coach Mike Hesson in 2012, Taylor handled himself with class, never put
his own needs ahead of the team and simply rolled-up his sleeves and got on with it. A more selfish man would have walked away after losing the leadership and splintered the team for years to come. That simply is not Taylor’s style. You can talk about the runs, the centuries, the catches at first slip, the square drives, slog-sweeps and questionable running between the wickets but the image at the end of the World Test Championship final
with Kane Williamson is the defining image of New Zealand cricket. Taylor and Williamson are the two best batsmen the country has produced. They have made each other better, pushed themselves and the Black Caps to unparalleled heights. The team has grown as Taylor has grown and we as supporters have had many golden summers as a result. As a fan, all I can say is thanks for the memories and enjoy retirement.
Idle Stuartia grabs hat-trick Idle Stuartia won her third race of the week when victorious in the Graham Neill Memorial Trotting Cup (2850m) at Blenheim’s Waterlea Raceway on Sunday. It adds to her win at the same venue on Friday and victory at Nelson last Sunday, which came after placing at the same venue just two days earlier. Trainer Rodger Austin was over the moon with the result and admitted he didn’t expect to see the 2-1/2 length winning performance from his mare on Sunday. “I was a wee bit surprised,” Austin said. “She had gone up a class and she was off 10m. “I didn’t think the 2800m would suit her, but she is in that zone and the old trotters, once they get in there, they are pretty hard to beat. “I am stoked, she has done really

well, and Blair (Orange) has driven her really well every start too.” With three wins and a placing from her four starts at the top of the South Island, Austin said the daughter of Superfast Stuart has enjoyed the trip away from their Weedons base.
“I think she just likes being away, just like her trainer and owner, getting away from home and having a bit of a holiday,” he quipped. Austin doesn’t have any immediate plans with his in-form mare but is looking forward to stepping her back out closer to home.

the trip on Sunday when finishing sixth to Idle Stuartia. “The 2800m didn’t suit him and I think the run the first day might have taken it out of him a wee bit because he didn’t eat up very well after the race, but I wasn’t too worried,” Austin said. “I think he will bounce back pretty well when he gets back to a mile and a quarter.” Austin was pleased to win the race named in honour of former local trotting identity Graham Neil. “It was great to win that race,” Austin said. “I didn’t know Graham really well but he was well-known around these parts, so it was great.” Laer on the card, trainers Robert and Jenna Dunn enjoyed taking out the local feature, The Blenheim Sun Newspaper Marlborough Cup (2850m), with Dashing Major.
