Marlborough’s recovery from the weekend’s storm is under way with the focus firmly on residents and communities, particularly in the Marlborough Sounds, where yesterday many people were still isolated. Mayor John Leggett said Marlborough Emergency Management’s focus is now on recovery. “Our communities are resourceful. We know many of them have already connected with their neighbours and are providing each other with support while the agencies involved in our response reach them,” he said. “Recovery involves getting a full assessment of the damage, clearing and repairing roads, and restoring power and

telecommunications lines around the region. Our teams have been in the air today doing as much aerial reconnaissance as possible.” “The good news is that our helicopter survey beginning with the Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds on Monday morning - which included Endeavour Inlet and Arapaoa Island - found far less damage to buildings than we were expecting. Aerial reconnaissance of the Pelorus Sound is underway now.” “We have also had the Coastguard, Department of Conservation and the council’s harbour boats out on the water checking in with individual bays and communities in Queen Charlotte Sound.” Continued page 2.

Stopbanks prevent potential disaster Continued from page 1. “Although there is a lot of work ahead of us, we are a resilient region and we will get through this. We will continue working with the many Marlborough-based agencies, organisations and iwi to get our region back up and running,” said Mayor Leggett. Spark cell phone coverage was restored to Picton on Monday morning. The council’s Rivers team continue to make emergency repairs to patch three breaches and one nearbreach of the stopbank system. “We understand that some people in areas that are still cut off will be feeling vulnerable and if you need essential supplies and cannot access them, please get in touch with the council’s Customer Service Centre on (03) 520 7400. In an emergency, dial 111,” he said. Work on the ground has continued, including along Queen Charlotte Drive to make the road passable and safe for residents, contractors and emergency services. Effective immediately, traffic management measures will be in place along Queen Charlotte Drive. A number of other local roads are still closed or have limited access for residents and the public and this information is being updated and is available on the council’s Facebook page. “The key message remains that travel on Marlborough Sounds and some rural roads should be limited to essential movements,” said Mayor Leggett. “It is crucial that people drive to the conditions and take care.” At midday on Tuesday, multiple roads in the area were either closed, or had limited access. You are asked to check the Marlborough District Council website’s Roading Update before travelling. “We are also aware that some farmers in the Waihopai, Onamulutu Valley and the Northbank have been in contact concerned about feed for their livestock,” said Mayor Leggett. He said it was difficult to get a good assessment of the impact on vineyards caught in the most at-risk areas from the storm but Wine Marlborough was working on this. More photos page 5.

Katrina steps into the spotlight By Jacob Page

Katrina Lange is taking a musical leap of faith with a song she loves to compete in Blenheim’s Stars in Your Eyes on August 14. Katrina will sing solo on stage as famed actress and singer Catherine Zeta-Jones, a challenge she is excited for. A dancer her entire life, it was family support which gave her the nudge she needed to compete at Marlborough’s ASB Theatre. “I’ve danced most of my life and been in shows but only started singing and acting in more recent years. “I’ve been in the ensemble as a dancer and singer of many shows like ChiKatrina Lange will be cago before and acted in performing as Catherine others – but this is my first Zeta-Jones time as a full soloist so very much out of my comfort

zone and nerve wracking,” she says. “We have an almost three-year-old funny little pickle of a daughter Jade and an older son Sean who is such an amazing big brother - so I haven’t performed for over four years now. “However, my partner encouraged me to audition as dancing and singing is my happy place – he’s been an amazing support to me.” An event organiser by trade, first in the UK, Australia and now Marlborough, Katrina says she is keen to be out of her comfort zone on the night. “It really is out of my comfort zone and I feel it’s pushing my singing abilities, but to be told I was good enough to participate has given me confidence to give it a go. “My son is also so supportive,” she says. “He’s seen me dancing and singing in many shows growing up “You’ll be great Mum” was all the further encouragement I needed.” Katrina’s chosen charity also has personal significance.

“I’ve also recently had a brush with cancer and felt this was a great opportunity to not only do something for me to be back in my happy place and also to give back for all the incredible support and help I had from nurses, friends and family, so my chosen charity is Child Cancer. “It touches and affects so many people. Many of my dear friends have been affected by this disease in some way, shape or form.” She will also have plenty of support from her friends on the night. “I will have the help of friends who will be dancing with me so we are practising as much as possible to do our best for my charity.” Stars In Your Eyes will be held at ASB Theatre on Saturday, August 14, presented by Creative Kids and The Fulton Foundation. The hosts will be celebrity judges and entertainers Tina Cross and Jackie Clarke. Tickets are on sale now.

The waterways in the Kaituna River estuary at Queen Charlotte Drive area were contaminated with the sewage coming from the Mahakipawa Sewer pump station, after the heavy rain caused road surface damage and disturbed the sewer pipes underneath it. Residents are advised to avoid contact with the river, sea water or any other surface water in this area. Do not swim, paddle, fish, or gather shellfish or any other food from the sea and rivers. People who come into contact with contaminated water should wash their hands thoroughly and follow good hygiene practices.

CBD parking change A recent council decision has seen the first hour of free parking continuing for Blenheim and Picton’s central business districts Parking portfolio councillor Brian Dawson said there had been a lot of positive feedback from shoppers and retailers since the policy was introduced in October 2020. “We want to make it as easy as possible for Marlburians to get out and support our local shops, cafes and restaurants,” he said. However, in order to retain the first hour free, parking prices after the first hour will increase by 20 percent.

Wairau boil water A boil water notice for the Wairau Valley water supply, issued on Saturday, currently remains in place and residents are advised to boil water being used for consumption until further notice. The reason for this is that water has been through the pump station affecting the chlorine dosing system.

Each of these famous performers will be portrayed in the Stars in Your Eyes competition. Tickets on sale now.

Wild weather smashes Sounds By Chloe Ranford and Morgane Solignac (STUFF REPORTER)

A Christchurch couple had to message emergency services through a friend in Auckland after a mud slip cause by heavy rain took out two baches beside them in the Marlborough Sounds. Christchurch woman Lucy Clark and her husband Alastair thought their “mini break” in Pukenui Bay, off Queen Charlotte Drive, would be “wonderful” until the weather went “wild”. During their first day at the bach, their neighbour, a long-term resident, told them the heavy rain that had been battering the upper South Island on Friday night had caused the road out to collapse a metre, trapping them in the bay. At 10pm, the couple heard noises to the right of their bach “like gun fire, rocks crumbling, water rushing”. The noise got “worse and worse” until the couple felt forced to investigate at 1am, Sunday morning. “It was so dark. We could hear it, but not see it. Rocks were being thrown against the baches, glass was smashing. My husband went up to the main access road but all he could see was movement. It was too scary for words,” Clark said. We felt we were alone. There wasn’t anywhere we could go. It was

really awful.” Clark tried messaging the Marlborough District Council, its civil defence team and police using Facebook. When no-one replied, she messaged a friend in Auckland who was online. She got in touch with the fire brigade, who connected her to the brigade in Linkwater [Marlborough Sounds], who activated an alarm. “But they quickly realised it was way too dangerous to rescue us. The next morning, on Sunday, the Clarks were “devastated” to see a 15-metre-wide landslide had “taken out” at least two baches in the bay. One was completely covered in debris. “A man from one of the baches had escaped to our neighbour’s bach during the night ... We were trapped. We could only shout across the mud at them,” Clark said. The Clarks put most of their belongings in their car, knowing they would have to leave it when they were rescued, and packed an emergency bag and waited. Help arrived at 9am in the form of Linkwater’s chief fire officer Simon Lamb. “He was covered in mud. Simon said, ‘I’ve come to walk you out’, and we said, ‘We’ll go wherever you take us’,” Clark said. They had to “scramble” through mud to reach the bay’s shore, before being walked to Belvue Bay. The Clarks were then taken to Linkwater’s Smiths Farm Holiday Park on a ute. On Monday morning the couple

hitched a ride with some fellow Smiths Farm Holiday Park visitors and secured tickets on the InterCity bus running between Picton to Christchurch. “This weather has had far-reaching effects ... The people of Marlborough are amazing. “Everyone we met helped us without question.” Lamb, a resident of Queen Charlotte Drive, said the Christchurch couple were two of five people he walked out of Pukenui Bay. Johnson’s barge operation manager Jonathan Everett said the company had helped Leslie Bros Contracting sail a digger to Belvue Bay on Sunday to start clearing slips. Smiths Far m Holiday Park co-owner and Marlborough Sounds ward councillor Barbara Faulls said a campervan owner sought shelter at the park on Sunday quite shaken. “In all the time I’ve lived in this valley, this is the worst I’ve ever seen the roads. “The sheer amount of slips on the hills around the valley is just phenomenal. “It’s utter devastation.” Faulls recorded 270 millimetres of rain in about two days. Marlborough emergency services manager Brian Paton said while Marlborough Sounds residents were used to being stranded, often keeping back-up supplies, tourists were not. The Civil Defence team was undertaking reconnaissance work on

Monday to determine how many people were in need of assistance, with the aim of running welfare flights in the coming days. “At this stage there are some communities in the Marlborough Sounds we haven’t heard from, so we’re proactively trying to contact them. There are probably a lot of places with no power or telecommunications, so they can’t talk to us and we can’t talk to them.” Paton said they would prioritise opening roads, before getting power up and running, and then mobile coverage. Marlborough Tour Company chief executive Abbe Hutchins said Cougar Line’s skippers and crew had worked throughout the weekend to deliver groceries and evacuate families and travellers from the Marlborough Sounds and the Queen Charlotte Track. Tired knee a constant distraction KORU NUTRITION “Pick Up Sticks, Fifty-Six” “Lucky Five, Seventy-Five” ”Dancing Queen, sevente… ””BINGO!!!” Gail’s voice rings out and it’s not an uncommon one to hear when Bingo is on. “The excitement that you get when playing Bingo is just such a rush. Listening intently, marking off your sheets, the surge as you start to see your line fill up!!! It is just it’s own world and you don’t want something like your knee distracting you from the game.” Distractions in the body are common as you get older but they were starting to impact Gails way of life. She would try to garden but would become distracted or go out for lunch with friends but not be able to be fully present...it was not the life that she wanted. “The only thing that would help was when I went swimming. Just floating in water...everything would ease up and my head would become clear again. Unfortunately I can’t stay in a pool all day and once I return to my normal life, my head would fog up with everything else going on in my joints.” One evening whilst on the internet, she came across an advert in which netball star, Irene van Dyke, was talking about how she uses Koru FX cream to support her joints and for general wellness. Digging deeper she found that Koru FX

was also endorsed by legendary broadcaster, Peter Williams. “With such high-calibre and trustworthy people backing it, I had to give this magic cream a try. I got the cream and applied it. A short while later I realized that I was feeling better and my head felt clearer without the distraction. I tell you, I got the same surge of excitement that you get when you get a full line in Bingo!” With noticeable benefits, it’s no wonder Koru FX has become NZ’s #1 fastest growing topical joint support cream. With tens of thousands of raving customers, Koru FX has set the bar for

natural joint support creams. “I just love it! I have a stash of it in my cupboard so I never run out. It is worth every drop. When I am down to the bottom of the bottle, I open it up and get the last drops out with a cotton bud. Not one drop is wasted.” “My husband and I use it every day and find it helps us get through until evening. It isn’t greasy like some other products we had tried before. Also having an allergy to fish and shellfish I had found some products that were off the market for me. I am so happy I found it.” New Zealand made and containing local and imported

high quality oils like calendula, arnica, manuka and peppermint, along with 12 others, Koru FX provides the perfect formulation for supporting joints and muscles. Countless doctors and pharmacists are recommending Koru FX cream due to its natural ingredients and fast acting delivery. Forestry not main culprit Dear Ed I agree with your correspondent Pete Watson (Sun p.20, July 7) that the restoration of Sounds marine ecosystems is vital. However, he’s a bit quick to point to the forest industry as the culprit. There is no credible science relating sedimentation rates to land use in the Sounds. However, research elsewhere in New Zealand shows forestry to produce far less sediment than pastoral farming. I suggest that the “meters” of sediment in the Sounds were largely derived

historically when destructive farming practices resulted in enormous erosion. The restoration of forest cover in the Sounds over the last half-century has radically reduced erosion. Erosion is a natural process in our geologically young landscape. Even in native forest, some landslides track right into the Sounds. Onshore winds produce much sediment from shoreline erosion. Production forests are not erosion-free, but neither is any other land use. Dallas Hemphill Pelorus Sound

Marlborough responds as major storm hits It’s been a huge few days for Marlborough after the massive storm on the weekend. Mayor John Leggett said the multiagency emergency response was a huge effort by many and he thanked everyone for their cooperation. “Nine hundred people were evacuated from their homes on Saturday as towns and communities across Marlborough were cut off by the floodwater.” “We declared a state of local emergency at 12:20pm on Saturday to ensure our emergency response team had all the resources it needed to effectively conduct evacuations. This state of emergency will stay in place for the time being as we transition to a recovery phase,” he said. The Mayor said the recovery involves

getting a full assessment of the damage, clearing and repairing roads, and restoring power and telecommunications lines. “We are pleased with the way our regions stop bank network held up during the event. The Council has invested a lot in river flood protection works since 1983 – this was a test of the quality of that work.” “Although there is a lot of work ahead of us we are a resilient region and we will get through this. We will continue working with the many Marlboroughbased agencies, organisations and iwi to get our region back up and running,” John said. Local artist picks up new challenges Local artist Walter Scott currently has an exhibition and sale of his works at The Wine Station. Here he talks to Sun journalist Glenise Dreaver about his life and work. Walter Scott, who admits to “pushing 90” and his wife Dot shifted into Ashwood Park Retirement Village in 2019. Having to give up his studio and gallery, Waterlea Studio, Walter is taking the opportunity to exhibit at The Wine Station during the current Art & Wine Festival. Walter originally came from Invercargill, an ex-Southland Boy’s High School old boy. He has however lived in Blenheim for almost 50 years; almost a local. He has never trained as an artist though. “I’m mainly self-taught, with just a few classes.”

“Accounting is precise; with art you can loosen up,” he says. His career was mainly in accounting, but for four or five years he combined that with his art when he and Dot were owners of Queen Street Fine Arts, deciding to retire at 75. He began with photography starting out in the 1950’s, moving into painting in the 1990’s. “Accounting is precise; with art you can loosen up,” he says. He remembers a compliment from one judge who saw the very first photograph he entered in a monthly exhibition of his club. “It was a puddle. Pearly stones. The judge said: “You’ve got the seeing eye.”

He learned about light, which creates the centre of interest, brings out the texture, shape, form and pattern, the basis of good composition. He has carried that approach over to painting. Walter started out with pastels. When he began there were very few artists working in that mode but now, he says, there are over 300 members in the Pastel Artists of New Zealand throughout the land. Then he moved on to oils and the use of a palette knife. Now in a retirement village, with pastel being a rather dusty medium, and lack of space to dry oils, he is now taking a multimedia approach with watercolour and other materials. That particular difficulty isn’t the only thing that has shaped his use of media and the type of canvases he uses though. “You’ve got to think of your market. Many houses do not have large wall spaces so size is a consideration. “An A4 size painting is handy for people who are travelling,” he adds. “My granddaughter pinches small stuff that will fit in the bottom of her suitcase, for example.” Working in water colour, requires a very different approach. “When you’re doing an oil, particularly heavy impasto, you spend two or three hours on it, then stop.” Watercolour and mixed media is slower. “You need to let each layer dry separately,” he says. “And you’re experimenting, using different materials on different surfaces; you get some surprises and some of it goes in the shredder!”

Walter Scott with one of his paintings for exhibit and sale at The Wine Station.

He has the following vital ‘plien aire’ (open air) tools. “An electronic sketch book, i.e. camera or phone. A box with a sketching kit, with watercolour pencils, and pens.” One Christmas, he received a whole set of watercolours of a type new to the market . “Exciting materials to use, a different colour

range. “And art books; They kept me quiet for a few days!” Whatever the media, Walter remains aware of that ‘seeing eye’ as well. “I went out to the heritage orchard at McKendry Park recently and I thought ‘By jingo, there’s a painting there’. And went home

and painted it.” You’re always, he says, trying to paint an idea. One painting on display is “A Trinity” the trinity of land, sea, sky.” Walter says his circumstances means shortage of storage space so, he does not want to take any of his exhibits home.

Disabled artists’ work on show By Glenise Dreaver

Last week Marlborough Art Gallery hosted an exhibition of work done by IDEAS Services artists. Each week, the gallery rents out a room where these disabled artists can work, under the tutelage of local artist Danny Knox. Their annual exhibition has had most of the works available for sale. Danny, an artist himself, specialises in painting and drawing, but he says he also trains and supports his students in other areas he has studied, such as sculpture, printmaking, and jewellery. “The focus is on making good art,” he says. “This is not something they do just to pass the time. “Given the right tools and guidance, fine art can be an arena where disability need not be a factor.” There are usually nine to 11 participants at the classes, and Danny says that their move to the Marlborough Art Society’s studio has allowed the students to develop their confidence both artistically and socially. “They then interact within our group and in the art

community at large. “It is not uncommon for Art Society members to pop in to see what the group is up to and discuss artwork with individuals. “Another huge plus has been having a busy gallery next door, with the group regularly visiting exhibitions and coming back fired up with ideas and inspiration. “As a result this year, we have two artists in the Top 88 in the IHC National Art

Awards and 20 sales at our exhibition at the Art Society exhibition.” One eye-catching piece, in last week’s exhibition, using acrylic paint and charcoal, is called “Jovi” by Glen Griffith. Glen, a founding member of the art group which had been going for several years before Danny arrived has, with Danny’s guidance, priced his multi-media canvas at $350.

Picton’s Cortado’s restaurant is going all out in the run-up to the national SPCA Cupcake Day on Monday, August 2. They are putting the fun into their fundraising with a full three days of activities leading up to that. Cortados general manager Kody North, a self-confessed animal lover and SPCA animal foster parent, says the

community was very good to them over Covid. “They really supported us! “So we decided to give back.” The activities start on Friday, July 30 and run until Sunday, August 1. Cortados will be selling special home-made dog biscuits, along with the traditional cupcakes. “Vanilla with buttercream icing, or chocolate

mud cake,” says Kody, adding that there will also be raffle tickets for a prize yet to be announced. “The draw for that will be held on Sunday night,” he says. Two other Sunday events are the Pub Quiz which starts at 5.30pm on Sunday, entry $10 with the proceeds to go to the SPCA. “The questions are trivial and fun,” he says.

Woodbourne Tavern earns national nod

Concept design for Interislander The above graphic shows the concept design for the new Interislander terminal building to service both rail and ferry passengers. A spokesperson says it will offer a modern customer experience with state-of-the-ar t check-in. “We’re

still working through the detailed requirements, so the building design is likely to change as he hange as the project progresses,” he says. However, the terminal location will remain more or less where it was originally planned.

A renewed focus on serving the Marlborough community has seen Renwick’s Woodbourne Tavern earn nominations for national hospitality awards. The Woodbourne Tavern has been selected as a finalist in the 2021 Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence in the ‘Best Local’ and ‘Excellence in Gaming’ categories. People can vote for the people’s choice at this link; https://survey.alchemer. com/s3/5137131/2021-Peoples-Choice-Award Owner Rowan Ingpen says it is fantastic recognition after a trying time through the Covid-19 pandemic. “We found that if you look after your locals, they will look after you and it’s been great to see. “It shows us that we are doing something right. “It validates what we are doing,” he says. “It makes you feel like the work we did during lockdown was worth it. “We did the home deliveries, we were front of mind for people and when we did open our doors, people felt safe to come back in.” Rowan described the last

18 months as like going into the unknown. “It felt like going on a roller coaster blindfolded. “You could feel the ups and downs but you just didn’t know what was coming. “The week before the lockdown was a record week and then the next we were scratching our head with no income. “This award is a nod to our staff and our community.” Rowan says the focus on serving Marlborough people fuels him and his team.

“We have to keep our roots as a business but also walk that tightrope with what different people need. “We want people to feel like this place is their local,” he says. Rowan says there are positives from the pandemic experiences. “It made us look at our processes and it made us more resilient. “We do what we do and we try to do it well but equally we knew there were other people worse off than us.”

TRADES PROFESSIONALS Who to call to get the job done right!

Morgan Plumbing At Morgan Plumbing we believe you deserve the very best results at the most affordable rates possible. When a plumbing crisis strikes there’s one team which has the knowledge and expertise to respond – Morgan Plumbing. More than 35 years ago, Kevin and Lynda Morgan set out to establish a plumbing business that the Marlborough community could rely on. Their vision proved to be a huge success and the company they built now employs around 38 staff and has grown to encompass so much more than just plumbing. General manager, Neal Young, says Morgan Plumbing offers a broad range of plumbing styles, services and solutions, as well as drain laying, gas fitting and roofing. “Plumbing is what we are best known for, but roofing would come in at a close second. We are one of the busiest roofing companies in Marlborough now,” he says.

In 2010 the company moved into its current premises at 11 Purkiss Street in Blenheim and has continued with its steady growth in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. “In the years that the Morgan Plumbing team has been working for the local community, we’ve built a strong reputation for being the team you can trust to arrive on time and leave with lasting results,” Neal says. “We will do anything from small to large scale jobs all over Marlborough. In fact, we have dedicated teams for each area of the business. If Mrs Jones wanted to change her tap washer we have a team on call to take care of it. Likewise we have maintenance, commercial and roofing teams to name a few,” he says. This is what makes Morgan Plumbing so reliable. “The key is having a team that is experienced in their areas so they can cover all your needs,” Neal adds.

Mark from Airify Heat Pump Cleaning

Your heat pump vs your power bill Heat pumps are the most cost-effective way to heat your home (EECA). Yes, even better than a woodburner. However a lot of people do not understand how heat pumps work and why they are so efficient and how to keep them working that way. How much does it cost to run my heat pump? Will my power bill go through the roof? Mark from Airify Heat Pump Cleaning gets these questions all the time. “My response is always the same”, Mark says. “Heat pumps are not like conventional electric heaters, they don’t use electricity to generate the heat. They use refrigerant. “So no, your power bill will not go through the roof. “I have been into people’s homes to clean their heat pump and I am not surprised their power bill is so high. “A dirty heat pump is no longer working efficiently, that’s like using wet wood!” A heat pump is simple really, just like a radiator in

your car, the coils must be free to move air. If your filters are dirty you are blocking that movement of air. If your coils behind the filters are dirty you are blocking that movement, and all this does is increase your power bill and decrease the life-span of the heat pump because it has to work harder to generate the heat required. What about the outside unit? It is just as important to maintain the outside unit as the inside. When was the last time that was checked? Is your heat pump running low on refrigerant? Is it still putting out the recommended amount of heat? A lot of people just blame the heat pump for having big power bills but usually I find it is because they are just using it wrongly or other factors inside the house are causing the large power bills. “I sit down with my customers and explain the best way to get the most out of their heat pump, Mark says.

“I show them why it is important to maintain them and other ways to keep those power bills low, including showing them my own power bill. “Nothing is better than an ‘Apples vs Apples’ comparison, my house vs your house and my power bill vs yours. And trust me my heat pump is on most of the time.” Airify Heat Pump Cleaning is New Zealand’s largest specialist heat pump cleaning company and has been for over 20 years. “Airify is a new company for Blenheim, but I have been working with Airify for over 5 years before getting the licence for the Blenheim area.” If you need more convincing, Google search ‘Airify Blenheim’ and see the local heat pumps that were in bad condition. A clean heat pump is an efficient heat pump, saving you money and your health. Give me a call today on 0800 24 74 39 or book online www.airify.co.nz

Condensation - stay dry How often have you awoken to find water dripping off your windowsills, or you have felt dampness on your walls and/or furniture? Condensation occurs when water vapour comes into contact with a cold, solid surface like an exterior wall or a cold window. As this water vapour hits the cold surface, it converts into a liquid form. This then trickles down the window and often pools on the window sill. It’s most common to find condensation in winter due to the difference in the exterior and interior temperatures, and people might not open their windows as regularly as they would in warmer months. This then causes a build-up in excess moisture. To effectively tackle this issue, look at permanent options such as double glazing and home ventilation. Speak to your local friendly glazier and home ventilation professionals to find a solution for your home.

Heat pump operating myths

Wednesday July 21, 2021 15

2018

Leave it running on economy? By Chris Davies Retired engineer At this time of year the public gets to be bombarded with information pertaining to “maintaining a warm and healthy home” most of it based upon old government figures which really don’t equate to the real world. Debunking the Myths: Basically the thermal efficiency of NZ homes are many times less than our counterparts in Europe the UK, USA, Japan and Australia. The best form of heating is from the floor up not down: The thermal efficiency expectation for the whole of the South Island is set at the same number. Needless to say there is quite a temperature and humidity difference between the top and bottom which will greatly affect the operation of the heat pump. Leaving the heat pump running 24 hours actually costs slightly less than turning off overnight. Why? Firstly, as the outside temperature drops so does the heat pump efficiency. (You might recall one heat pump manufacturer being fined a few years back for claiming otherwise.) Secondly, because the home’s inside temperature will drop by quite a few degrees overnight - mine is a relatively new home, just five years old, yet will lose 6c degrees on even a mild frosty night, going from 21c to 15c, which now needs to be brought up again.

As the inside temperature starts to climb the heat pump will keep kicking in and out as it reverses into defrost and in so doing blows in cold air. Over the next two hours it will keep running at full load and by the time your home is back up to yesterday’s temperature, the cost will be greater than if you’d just dropped the temperature 3 degrees, or put it on economy overnight, which does much the same. I now find I can leave it running on economy during the day also, giving me a further saving. Even when the temperature remained between 10 - 12C degrees over night, switching off afforded only a small saving. Running the heat pump: Now by leaving the heat pump running constantly, the whole house warms up over a few days and becomes easier to keep warm (and who wants to wake up to a cold house anyway)? Mention is also made about closing off unwanted rooms. The problem with this is those rooms become damp and maybe start to smell mouldy. Better to leave those room doors slightly ajar, by a few inches, so as to let some warm air to enter. Much better to try and balance the temperature, within the home, to around 2C. Unless the day time temperature, of a winter sunny day, goes up to at least 14-15c degrees by midday or early

afternoon, it’s not worth shutting off the heat pump as it will stop running itself anyway. I have done this in two homes I have owned, one a very large 220m2 with two floor mounted heat pumps of 5.5Kw and the other a 2.5kw working together. It actually costs less to run both together than trying to run just one which just cannot do the job and therefore constantly runs at full capacity. Rock star status for Judith By Glenise Dreaver

Kaikoura’s National MP Stuart Smith says that Opposition party leader Judith Collins was treated “like a rock star” on her Marlborough visit last week. “People recognised her from their utes, they called out, they waved. “She was getting recognised.” Not only that, she was “right up the front” at the Groundswell protest held in Seymour Square last Friday. It was part of a nationwide “Howl of Protest” by farmers and the rural sector, and events were held all over the country. “Politicians weren’t supposed to speak,” said Stuart, adding that popular demand was such that Judith was asked to do so. The event saw the best part of a thousand farmers and supporters (not least their dogs) rallying, and to protest about a raft of current government policies

and changes affecting the rural sector, and the costs they are having to bear. As the rally ended, howl they and their furry supporters did, in a chorus that could be heard blocks away. It was done in front of quite a few spectators, including mayors and elected and appointed officials from all over the country, in town for the Local Government New Zealand’s conference being held in the ASB theatre on Thursday and Friday. “It was a very good event,” Stuart said. “Respectful and showing the right attitude.” “But they were making it very clear how the sector feels. They have been singled out, particularly in relation to climate change. And that is based on questionable data, piling on top of other regulations. “The agricultural sector doesn’t get the recognition they deserve,” he added.

Opposition leader Judith Collins with local MP Stuart New World staff Tracey Jones and Gwen Cameron with Judith Collins. Smith.

Just some of the thousand plus crowd of rural protestors who gathered at Seymour Square on Friday afternoon for "The Great Howl", in protest against the raft of government legislation that they believe is adversely affecting the sector.

Over the past eight years, Dr David Orsbourn has become the go-to man for walk-in, walk-out vein procedures at the Churchill Private Hospital in Blenheim. Many people visit his clinic because of the visible, unsightly veins that render them unable to wear shorts. Others do so because they no longer wish to live with the painful symptoms associated with varicose veins. But beneath the surface, there’s another reason to have your veins treated. If you ignore them, there is an increased risk of developing other, often more severe, health issues. David elaborates, saying, “Bulging bluish veins may not be the only skin condition you experience if you have varicose veins. You may also suffer from varicose eczema”. He continues, “This is a nasty one, and you may experience a dry, scaly rash, discoloured skin, achy legs, swelling and an uncomfortable feeling of heat in your legs.” Left untreated, David explains that the skin may deteriorate further, leading to open sores. Another skin condition that can occur where varicose veins are left untreated is cellulitis. The skin becomes firm, dry, itchy, tender, and fragile. Unlike healthy skin, this delicate surface is more likely to see bacterial infections enter the tissues through cracked or broken skin. An open wound on the leg, usually the lower half, is often a venous leg ulcer. If you have a shallow, irregularly shaped, yellow, or red wound on your leg that is usually painful and oozes, you may have a venous leg ulcer. Injury (as little as an insect bite) or pressure may be the initial cause of these wounds. Or it may be a bacterial infection, but venous insufficiency is often the root cause of these ulcers. With a background in general practice, David has seen many patients present with skin conditions on their lower legs. As a result, he has consistently advocated treating the underlying cause. The good news is that David can do this with the minimally invasive walkin, walk-out treatments he now offers at his Blenheim vein clinic, based in The

Churchill Private Hospital. A complimentary, full doctor’s vein assessment and scan helps determine the most suitable treatment for you. Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS) uses specialised ult rasound equipment to guide injections of sclerosant to close the vein permanently. This procedure is virtually painless, so it requires no anaesthesia. Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), the gold standard varicose vein treatment, again, requires no general anaesthesia or hospital stay. You walk in and walk out (wearing compression stockings for two weeks) and can drive home afterwards. Like UGFS, there’s no downtime, and you can be back at work the next day. Food inflation: By Wally Richards You will likely be aware from the news and visiting your local Supermarket that the prices of fruit and vegetables are increasing significantly which we are told is due to inflation. Normally with food such as fresh vegetables and fruit it is a seasonal thing that regulates prices or the weather which can affect growth rates. Commercially grown vegetables should be lower as we have had a fairly mild winter with adequate moisture, even if the other factor of daylight hours has been low hours due to winter (now increasing nicely). It is the other factors that are pushing commercially grown vegetables up, such as increased growing costs of man made fertilisers and chemical protections, transport fuel costs on and off the farm and of course the government interfence. The cost of your vegetables is going to increase and so there is no better time to starting growing your own. On June 21 we had the shortest number of day light hours since then the number of day light hours have been slowly increasing and soon the dormant plants in your gardens such as deciduous fruit trees and roses are going to start to move. Likewise vegetable seedlings planted now will respond to the increasing hours of light and grow faster. There is no better time of the year to plant vegetable seedlings and I would suggest ones that you can soon harvest such as silverbeet and teh lettuce called ‘Drunken Woman’. With both these crops you can harvest the outer leaves and leave the plant growing and producing more leaves till it eventually goes to seed. This can mean within a few weeks of planting at this time of the year you will begin harvesting some really fresh produce.

Right with you proud Kiwi

June 30, page 26. Donated blood saves lives. Another fact you can’t donate blood in Blenheim.

New Zealand has spent the best part of the last 200 years selling New Zealand to the rest of the world. To the point where I could be almost anywhere in the world and mention NZ or Kiwi and people respond with excitement about our produce, scenery or friendliness. We would go right back to the bottom of the heap if our name were to change. It’s sheer craziness. Also didn’t the PM say in the lead up to the election that there would not be a name change?

Much appreciated

Lovely language

The Sun Sun fact of the week

A big thank you to the kind person that handed my Westpac card to the information counter at New World on Friday, June 9 around 3pm. Bless you.

We must get tougher I see where an Asian tourist had an operation in the Wairau Hospital. They had no travel insurance so owed us all $75,000 for the care. She left the country with no trace now. A few years ago our son got sick while on work in Italy. He had pneumonia so needed a hospital. On his admission they took his passport off him. When came time to leave they asked for the money. He didn’t have it so they said well no passport. So mum and dad were asked to pay which we did, So the money comes from somewhere but obviously no need in New Zealand.

New Zealanders going to hospital in China is expected to hand their credit card in at the counter before treatment. Maybe we could expect the same for Chinese and Aussies receiving treatment here?

New library Now that the new library is taking shape, where are all the naysayers now? As I’ve always said, money is always secondary to education. Mind you, you can’t educate everyone!

QR code scanning At a Renwick store during Wellington’s Covid scare I had great difficulty scanning in, there being a bad reflection on the only icon at the store. Neither was there a written sign-in facility. I contacted the manager but four days later no change. Do your stuff all stores for those of us who are endeavouring to be responsible.

Ohhh how I love the use of Maori language in everyday use. Sooo beautiful to hear. Especially on television and media radio.

How gross

Blenheim needs traffic lights, drivers here don’t deserve roundabouts. I’m from Auckland and the traffic is nothing to rave about but at least they can use roundabouts and indicators properly. I think a traffic light would be great after the new bridge instead of that slow, useless roundabout by Mobil. Learn to drive Marlborough

Third world country now 14 days for an envelope sent from Blenheim lawyer to Seddon! Left it too late to action.

Be patient Why is it that some drivers can’t wait another couple of seconds before pulling out of a side street, knowing full well that they really are cutting it fine and then chug slowly along in front of you? Especially when there is no traffic behind you. They hesitate, then pull out just the same

What a shambles I wish this government would get on with their job of governing instead of dictating. No one signed up for this deceitful mess.

Is there a local DOC office? Why when one phones DOC’s office do you get Nelson DOC office. Is the new public service, invisible public servants?

Parked in Kmart car park, first time in months. Got out of car and low and behold dozens of spat out chewing gum deposits on the ground. There are some disgusting, lazy peeps in Blenheim. Put your chewed gum in a piece of paper and bin properly please.

Re: Learn your history I fail to see how you can say Maori fail on many things including health. I’m pretty sure they have the same access to medical care as anyone else in New Zealand. So we New Zealanders are no more privileged than you.

You can always go back People coming to live here from Auckland have said to me how slow the South Island is and not much social life. Well we locals love the laid back feel and the lack of traffic and population. You can keep your traffic jams and lattes. Though think its not far away.

Oh my goodness How are we going to sort out this ‘hate speech’ stuff. How will we know, in advance who is going to take offence? Are the courts ready for the deluge of complaints? New Zealand already has a law in place but the government seems intent on enacting something more. Why?

Re: Not a lifestyle choice Well said. If the staff think I drink soy which is generally not very pleasant tasting for the fun of it then I would gladly swap my food allergy and terrible debilitating stomach and bowel problems with them. Then they might get why we ask for alternative milk.

Be road courteous Why does most days the traffic between Picton and Blenheim drives at 80kph. Do some not realise it is still 100kph, it didn’t change with the new speeds around the area. If you wish to travel at 80kph that’s fine but pull over and let the 30 vehicles behind you pass. It means for safer driving all round.

Thank you A big thank you to the kind Bunnings employee that let me use his car to jump start our car on Sunday in their car park. Thanks again.

Tasty toasties local hit By Glenise Dreaver

If you are partial to a toastie, and the evidence is that many local people are, you will be pleased to hear that two of the twelve finalists in the national Great New Zealand Toastie Takeover come from Marlborough. “We’re just the new kids on the block,” says Toastie Picton’s co-owner Taylor Hamilton, adding that she and Dan Hamilton opened their seafront shop just days before the competition started and weren’t even sure they’d opened in time to enter. They were chosen from among 120 entrants and the toastie they entered is called Pete from Picton. It’s made of Marlborough salmon, Pete’s legendary cream cheese flavoured with lemon, dill and capers, McClure’s Pickles with parmesan garnish. Taylor says they are selling hundreds of toasties a day, at least a thousand a week. Staff member Josh Ulph says, unbelievingly “It’s just ridiculous.” Mollies Bar and Eatery at the Hotel d’Urville in Blenheim is also a finalist

That’s a slow roasted pork belly, provolone, chimichurri, American mustard, McClure’s Pickles with apple chilli gel on toasted sourdough with kumara crisps Judging is done in secret – judges don’t identify themselves, but just come in and order the toastie anonymously. “They may even have been,” says Taylor. “We just don’t know.” Competition criteria required sandwiches to be toasted between two slices of bread and – like all respectable toasties – able to be eaten by hand. The toasties also needed to contain cheese and McClure’s Pickles, with all the other ingredients left entirely to the entrants’ imagination. The competition closes on July 30 and this year has a new section – the People’s Choice award. Flood-affected Westpac customers offered relief options Westpac NZ is offering financial support to personal and business customers affected by flooding in the West Coast and Marlborough regions. The relief package features a range of possible support options for both business and personal customers. These may include: • A temporary overdraft facility;

Consumer customers requiring access to term deposit funds should also contact Westpac. Westpac NZ general manager of consumer banking and Wealth, Gina Dellabarca, says

the bank has spent the weekend contacting staff and customers to make sure they’re safe and well-supported. “Like the rest of the country we’ve been watching with alarm the images of f looding and destruction, and our thoughts are with all those affected,” Gina says. “We’ll work with our customers to provide them support

options, so they can focus on looking after each other and their property. In the meantime, we urge the public to follow the instructions of Civil Defence and Emergency services. “Anyone who has been affected should call us on 0800 738 691 to discuss their individual needs or drop into a branch and visit us in person, provided it’s safe to do so.”

This is a Monday to Friday role with occasional rostered after hours work, as required. Reporting to the Compliance Manager and working within a team of approximately 7-9 Environmental Protection Officers, this role will see you monitoring resource consents and responding to customer concerns to ensure the Marlborough region maintains its high standard of environmental protection and compliance. This could include anything from compliance issues regarding winery waste, through to marine farms, air pollution or water quality. Some of your day-to-day duties will include (but not be limited to): • Formulating strategies for enforcement of the Resource Management Act (RMA) and Bylaws; • Understanding and investigating complaints objectively and impartially; • Preparing and presenting evidence to Council hearings and potentially to Court; • Informing and educating landowners and businesses on the benefits of consent compliance; and • Fostering working relationships with industry to minimise their environmental impacts. MDC latest update on flooding Marlborough’s recovery from the weekend’s storm continues, with the focus remaining firmly on residents and communities, particularly in the Marlborough Sounds, where some people are still isolated. The Marlborough Emergency Management teams have been in the air again today carrying out aerial reconnaissance of the Awatere and Waihopai valleys, the Northbank and Pelorus Sound. Damage in the Outer Pelorus is limited. The Northbank area is also now passable by 4WD. “We are working with many Marlborough-based agencies, organisations and iwi to get our region back up and running,” said Mayor John Leggett. Minister of Primary Industries Damien O’Connor also dropped in and visited the Emergency Operations Centre team in Blenheim today. The Council’s Rivers team continues to make emergency repairs to patch two breaches of the stop bank system. Access out of Moenui to Picton by road was made possible today, under a traffic management system, by the Marlborough Roads team. Damage to the Awatere Valley Road up to Molesworth is more serious than expected. The damage include an underslip, washed out culverts and a washout. Work has continued today along Queen Charlotte Drive to make the road passable and safe for residents, contractors and emergency services. Queen Charlotte Drive access hours from Picton: Closed at 9.00 am to 12.00 pm Open from 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm Closed 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm Open 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm Closed from 7.00 pm with a manned checkpoint until 9.00 am recording vehicles and resident entry only. Work is continuing on a number of other local roads. This information is being updated and is available on the Council’s Facebook page. The following roads remain closed: •SH63 - Renwick to near St Arnaud is closed due to flooding and slips. The worst damage is on the Blenheim side

of the Wash Bridge. Very good progress has been made reinstating this road. •Waihopai Valley Road past the Maori Ford Bridge. Marlborough Roads engineers are considering a number of possible fixes. •Northbank Road past Bartletts Creek bridge. This currently has 4WD access to the Patriarch. •Kenepuru Road - major slips, underslips and slumping. Still being assessed. •Kaiuma Bay Road - multiple large slips. •Queen Charlotte Drive from Havelock to Moenui - a large underslip and slip. •The middle and upper part of the Awatere Valley Road has been seriously damaged in a number of places and will take time to repair. The damage includes an underslip, washed out culverts and a washout. If you need essential supplies and cannot access them, please get in touch with the Council’s Customer Service Centre on (03) 520 7400. In an emergency, dial 111. A sewer pipe in Havelock along Mahakipawa Road to the oxidation ponds was repaired on Sunday but it will take at least two days for contaminants to clear and people are advised to stay out of the water in that area until then. Avoid contact with the river and sea and do not swim, paddle, fish or gather shellfish. Mayor Leggett said the Emergency Management Team also assisted today with the evacuation of a person in the Sounds with long-term medical issues. “This person required treatment in Wellington Hospital and it was fantastic that we could get him to his treatment,” he said. The team is keeping an eye on a small, fast moving weather system that is due to cross the South Island on Wednesday evening, bringing rain to Marlborough. The Met Service advises that rainfall on the ranges is likely to total 20 to 40mm over a six hour period tomorrow but is unlikely to result in any significant flooding in the Wairau River. Mayor Leggett said the rainfall may hinder work on current road issues, particularly in the Marlborough Sounds and our emergency response teams will continue to monitor already compromised areas.

Local protests

That well-known local Tim Leslie wasn't going to let EcoWorld have it all their own way in the protest stakes last week. On Thursday last week, he parked his car up outside the Convention Centre during the national Local Government conference, with his own personal protest placard.

sports talk With Jacob Page

Back to the future with Shaun Johnson The Warriors have likely made a shrewd investment in regaining the services of Shaun Johnson. It’s taken me a few weeks to fully embrace the reunion, for both sides, but it appears the positives far outweigh the negatives. The now 30-year-old left the club in unhappy circumstances three years ago. He negotiated an early release from his lucrative contract when the club decided they wanted to

see more before offering him a new deal. Johnson is eager to come home with his young family. Who could blame him? The competition is keeping the competition afloat by moving 12 teams to Queensland. The Warriors will be getting a more mature Johnson at a much friendlier price, The Warriors should be back to playing games in New Zealand

consistently from next year which I’m sure is also appealing. Johnson, who has played for the Cronulla Sharks since his Warriors time ended, will also offer a proven match-winner and a leader in Auckland, something which may be needed with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck moving to rugby. Some fans are not overly excited by the back to the future move but I believe it was the best option the Warriors could get to upgrade their

under-performing halves. No one has taken Johnson’s spot at Mt Smart since he left three years ago. The Warriors have a poor kicking game, their last tackle options are below par and unsustainable if the team wants to make the top eight. The Warriors had a need and they addressed it. Now, sure, there was dysfunction when the club initially said they had no interest in re-signing John-

son but at least they were not too proud to walk those words back for the benefit of the club. So, while it’s not Nathan Cleary, Brandon Smith, or Jerome Hughes, Johnson is the best option available for the money on offer. Johnson will hopefully run at the line more and use his much improved kicking game to ensure more tries, more points and more victories for the Warriors next year.

Blenheim gymnast Sammie Williams continues to rack-up victories. The 10-year-old from Springlands School competed in the Te Wero gymnastics competition in Christchurch where she achieved first place in all of her apparatus’ including floor, vault, beam and bar and was the overall winner of her grade out of around 40 contestants. She also won first place overall at the Top of the South Championships held in Nelson in April. She backed that up with first overall at the Marlborough Championships in May and second place in the West Melton competition in Christchurch later in the month. Sammie says she is delighted with her success. “I feel good and proud of myself, but I always feel nervous before my competitions.” She competes for the Blenheim Gymnastics Club and trains three times a week and still has plenty of competitions this year. “I love training with my friends. I love going to the Blenheim Gymnastics Club because I always get a Hi-5 from Greg (my coach) which always puts a smile on my face. “My goal at the moment is to get a score of 10 on my bar routine. My highest is 9.9.

“There is a Kaikoura competition coming up in August and I am excited for it. “There are another six competitions this year and I hope to enter all of them.” Sammie certainly has her favourite disciplines. “My two favourite apparatuses are the bar and floor, but I like bar the best because I really enjoy it and it is my highest scoring apparatus and I find it the easiest.”
