Racheal predicts fun and energy in 80s blast for ‘Stars’

Classic Fighters but attendees on the Sunday are in for a special treat. Up for grabs is an adventure flight in Full Noise, a Yak-3 fighter, worth $2300. All ticketholders over the age of 18 years, will go into the draw at noon to win this amazing prize. You must be present at the draw to win

Racheal Kenyon will be performing as Cyndi Lauper.

Racheal Kenyon knows she can be a crowd-pleaser at Blenheim’s Stars in Your Eyes at the ASB Theatre. She will transform into 80 pop icon Cyndi Lauper and plans to bring the energy, colour and joy Lauper was known for in her heyday. Racheal has been involved in the show before as a backup singer for acts Boy George and Dolly Parton. “I thought at the time it was a great way to be involved without having the pressure. “I bumped into Alana (Sagar), who portrayed Dolly Parton, in the supermarket and she said she hoped I was auditioning. “I said to her I didn’t know who I would be and we had a brainstorm right there in the supermarket Alana said ‘what about Cyndi Lauper’? “I said OK and went home and

got on my computer to enter before I chickened out.” “I want to be someone high energy and iconic and I think Cyndi represents that.” Choosing Cyndi, a female icon and activist in her own right also aligns well with Racheal’s chosen charity for the event, Pink Packets, which aims to end period poverty for girls and women in Marlborough. “They supply period products to be given to charities and organisations like the Salvation Army. “Pink Packets also pushes for sustainable and reusable hygiene products so less is put in landfills and hopefully it keeps costs down for people.” Racheal is a regular theatre performer. Originally from Wakefield in Nelson, she joined Blenheim Musical Theatre in 2003 and

has been a constant on the scene ever since. “I do love musical theatre because you have to sing, dance and act all in one performance which is a real challenge. “I feel Cyndi is an ideal fit,” she says. “Her first album was called ‘She’s so unusual’ and I think that sums her up perfectly. “I don’t feel like I have to choreograph anything with her. “She just got up on stage and kicked her legs around and moved her hands and had a great time. “I’m hoping people will get up and have a great time.” Stars In Your Eyes will be held at ASB Theatre on Saturday, August 14, presented by Creative Kids and The Fulton Foundation. The hosts will be celebrity judges and entertainers Tina Cross and Jackie Clarke. Tickets are on sale now.

Rene at peace with Stars In Your Eyes choice By Jacob Page

Rene de Ruiter can see a little bit of himself in the man he will become to perform at Blenheim’s Stars in Your Eyes at ASB Theatre on August 14. “I remember the TV show and I know how great this night is and how positive it is for the community, so I wanted to be part of it. “I thought Cat Stevens was the perfect fit because he is a humble man, he’s not a show-off with dance moves. “He retired at the height of his fame, sold his guitar and walked away from an industry where money rules and set up schools and did good instead,” he says. “I relate to his humble, easy-going personality. “It’ll be much easier for me than becoming Elton John, Mick Jagger or Robbie Williams.” Rene says his journey with music ramped up when he found himself

with extra time on his hands. “About five years ago I sold my business and ended up buying a guitar on Trade Me for $300. “It wasn’t too expensive but it’s a nice guitar so I decided I better do something with it. “So I went on YouTube and started practising some of my favourite songs from when I was younger David Bowie’s Heroes and Perfect Day by Lou Reed and within a few days, I was singing my favourite songs. “I find the guitar also helps your voice find where it needs to be. “Because I was recently retired I could play for five or six hours and no one would bother me.” Originally from the Netherlands, Rene says he has a deeper appreciation for songs as he’s become older. “It is nerve-wracking but this is a song I know off by heart and while I’m 63, I really love this song and its meaning. “I’m nervous but I’ve played the

song hundreds of times and I hope my brain doesn’t let me down on the big night.” Rene is a passionate cyclist who often bikes from Renwick to Blenheim. He would like to use any money he wins to donate it to the Marlborough District Council in the hopes they can use it to make a cycling lane between Renwick and Blenheim so people can cycle safely while improving the environment. Rene says he is excited to see plenty of local people enjoying the night for a worthy cause. “I’m excited by the night, the cause and the fact people can go out and enjoy themselves,” he says. Stars In Your Eyes will be held at ASB Theatre on Saturday, August 14, presented by Creative Kids and The Fulton Foundation. The hosts will be celebrity judges and entertainers Tina Cross and Jackie Clarke. Tickets are on sale now.

Each of these famous performers will be portrayed in the Stars in Your Eyes competition. TICKETS ON SALE NOW.

Cancer Society moving Cancer Society Marlborough is to shift its location, opening a new permanent office at 76a Maxwell Road. They plan to be officially open and operating from this site on Monday August 16 in time for Daffodil Day on August 27 and the inaugural launch of the local Breast Cancer support group. An official opening is planned in early September, the date to be advised later.

Roading recovery

Rene de Ruiter will be transforming into Cat Stevens.

Marlborough Roads is establishing a recovery team so that existing resources can focus on operating and maintaining the rest of the Marlborough state highway and local road network while work on the recovery from flooding progresses. A Waka Kotahi manager said it was intended the team would be made up of local consultants where possible and they will be responsible for bringing the network from the current emergency response phase to business as usual,” he said. Key tasks will be to establish priorities and develop engineering options for each site, determine costs, mobilise resources, and report and communicate progress, as well as to liaise with landowners, stakeholders and other utility operators.

Farmers more confident The latest Federated Farmers farm confidence survey shows positivity around economic conditions but deepening concern about the ability to plug workforce gaps. The survey, of 1422 farmers, showed 18 per cent considered the current economic conditions to be good. That’s a 12.4 point improvement from the survey six months earlier and 46 points better than a year ago after the economy was slammed by the pandemic. A spokesperson says it seems many farmers will be using those returns to try and get their debt down in the face of the tightening attitude from banks. “A net 29.3 per cent of respondents expect their debt to reduce over the next 12 months, he said.

Jack Flynn, the Head Boy of Marlborough Boys’ College, already has provisional acceptance for the pre-medical school course at the University of Otago. He’s also applied to Auckland university. And at just 18, he’s already had more than the usual amount of experience at the cutting edge of saving lives and moving towards his aim to work in trauma medicine. On Friday July 23, the latest test of his mastery started at 2.30pm with a very loud alarm and a cellphone message checking his availability in a nearby medical emergency. “Your ambulance service needs your help. Can you assist?” Yes. Jack has, for the last year, held a level 5 resuscitation certificate from the New Zealand Rescue Council, the highest level available to the public Since then, he has been on call for 12,380 hours as a volunteer using the GoodSAM app. He was just picking up his car from being serviced. “So I was straight out of there!” Less than five minutes later, he was on the scene to find a woman

in a vehicle in cardiac arrest, with someone already administering CPR. And almost immediately, the fire and emergency services arrived. “They quickly got the patient on to the floor,” said Jack. At that stage, he introduced himself and his qualifications. As the highest qualified person on site, he took on the team leader role, attaching the defibrillator, removing clothing and managing the airway with its bag valve mask. He says in such a situation you just move into the zone, focussing on what you need to do. “I didn’t feel a lot.” When St John paramedics arrived he greeted them, introduced them to the situation, letting them know how many shocks had been administered and handing over the patient to them. It wasn’t his first experience either. Jack had made headlines in 2019 when he was 16. A woman aboard a flight he and his family were on, just three hours out of Los Angeles, with the flight crew thinking she might have had a stroke. That wasn’t so. “I went over.

Jack Flynn, Head Boy of Marlborough Boy's College, with the GoodSAM app on his phone that two weeks ago called him to his second life-saving experience.

The woman’s Apple watch was recording a very high pulse and very low blood pressure, signs that she was about to go into cardiac arrest. Which she did,” says Jack. “And there was some pretty decent turbulence,” he says of that incident The crew asked if they should call for a doctor. “Might be a good idea!” With defibrillation and the doctor and himself both working, she turned the corner quite

quickly. Jack says his experiences have taught him how to communicate with adults, letting them know that you know what you are doing and can issue reasonable instructions. And it’s also taught him that age isn’t a barrier. He says he’s not the only student at MBC who has high qualifications. “We have one student who has his pilot’s licence and another who isn’t far away from that.”

Dynamic duo bring ‘golden years’ magic to ASB Theatre Alison Quiglan and Mark Hadlow have the type of chemistry that only comes with 40 years of seeing each other on various stages around the world. The dynamic duo, who studied together in 1978, will play the lead roles in Roger Hall’s Winding Up which will be at Blenheim’s ASB Theatre on August 19 and 20. “Alison and I were in drama school together in 1978 just as Roger Hall plays were coming into existence and this gives us a great feeling of bonding and that we can represent Gen and Barry as they go into their 60s,” Mark says. For Alison and I, we’ve been but performers but it’s like being married in the same industry all this time,” Mark says. “This is our third Roger Hall play together and we love it.” “Roger has followed a particular generation right through from when they were parents with young children to now that they are retiring,” Alison says. “When the script hits the audience, it really is extraordinary. “He’s a good observer of life and times in New Zealand.” The play revolves around retirees Barry and Gen who have no interest in slowing down. There’s overseas travel to plan, family feuds to settle, the inevitable health problems, and a friend to bury. As Barry and Gen put the fun into funerals and discover new complications in conjugal relations, Winding Up provides a hilarious testament to the lighter side of the golden years. “Roger’s found a lovely way of portraying people in the twilight years of their lives,” Mark says. Alison says with a play like this, there is

always room for a little improvisation. “You rehearse three-quarters of it and the rest happens as you watch the audience watch the play,” Alison says. “You want to react to how they are interacting with the play,” she says. “The audience is just as important as any other part of the play,” Mark says. The show will continue on a South Island tour after Blenheim, going to Oamaru, Dunedin and Invercargill. “It’s great to be able to give the South Island professional theatre and for Alison and me, it’s great to be on the road and performing for fresh audiences each night.” Mark says it is a thrill to do the show at the ASB Theatre, an establishment he helped fundraise for when it was being built. “Blenheim audiences are always so engaging and we can’t wait to get there,” he says. He korero no te Kaunihera o Wairau NEWS FROM THE MARLBOROUGH DISTRICT COUNCIL

Review of responsible camping bylaw planned Councillors decided last week to review the region’s new Responsible Camping Control Bylaw 2020 to respond to concerns raised by the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) and address changes brought about by the Government and Covid-19. A Responsible Camping Panel will be established to review submissions and manage a hearing process. The panel will be made up of two independent commissioners and one councillor, to be confirmed by 15 November. Mayor John Leggett said the Council received a draft ‘statement of claim for judicial review’ from the NZMCA in relation to the bylaw at the end of April 2021. The two key points of the NZMCA claim are that: • Submitters were not given the chance to make submissions on the restriction of freedom camping to five sites in the district • Further, the Council did not undertake a complete assessment of all areas in the district (other than for the five sites) against the criteria in the Freedom Camping Act. “While the Council does not accept these

claims, we have decided to undertake further consultation on the bylaw to address these points and to address other matters that have arisen since the bylaw came into effect,” said Mayor Leggett. “Importantly this allows the Council to review the effect of the bylaw during the most recent camping season, last summer, which was the first managed under the 2020 bylaw. It’s timely too as the Government is also reviewing the Freedom Camping Act 2011 with some major changes proposed, and Covid-19 has had an impact as well,” he said. The public notification process to review the bylaw will begin on 17 September and gives the public six weeks to have their say, with submissions closing on 28 October 2021. “We will be undertaking a robust analysis of submissions and plan to hold public hearings in early February,” Mayor Leggett said. Following the hearings in February 2022, along with the analysis of the submissions received, a new bylaw will be adopted, or the current bylaw will be reconfirmed. It is anticipated that the bylaw, once adopted, will come into effect from 1 May 2022.

Mayoral Relief Fund opens for applications Marlborough’s Mayoral Relief Fund to assist the region in its storm recovery effort is now open for applications. The fund is for residents in the Marlborough District Council area who have suffered personal, financial or emotional hardship as a result of the July storm event. The grant amount will be up to $1,000; however the committee considering the applications has some discretion depending on evidence of hardship. People wishing to apply to the fund can do so via the Council website at: https://bit.ly/ MayoralReliefFund Announcing the fund, Mayor John Leggett thanked Acting Minister for Emergency Management Kris Faafoi for the Government’s donation of $100,000 to Marlborough’s recovery. “We have also received donations from a number of local individuals and businesses, which shows real community spirit,” Mayor Leggett said.

“While our recovery work is going well, it will take some time before roading in the affected areas of the Marlborough Sounds, Awatere Valley and Waihopai Valley is reconnected.” “Our teams will continue their work clearing slips, repairing roads and bridges and reconnecting these communities. That is our priority but it will take time and I thank those affected for their patience.” Anyone wishing to donate to the fund can do so via online banking. Simply add the Marlborough District Council’s account number: 02-06000202861-00 and include ‘Mayoral Fund’ as a reference. Alternatively people can make a payment to the fund at the Council reception at 15 Seymour Street, Blenheim. A path that has meant suffering … Papua New Guinea is a Pacific nation, but local woman Stephanie Wonuhali, who joined her missionary husband Joe there, found a poverty-stricken and frightening society. Here she talks to Sun journalist Glenise Dreaver about her experiences. “We’re in a bit of a pickle,” says Stephanie Wonuhali of Blenheim. That’s a big understatement and it’s because she married Joe Wonuhali, an RSE worker who, after their marriage, had to return to Papau New Guinea to get a partnership work visa. That’s the law. It is proving to be a long and complicated process, something they hadn’t anticipated because, says Stephanie: “My husband is an educated man, a teacher and a pastor.” A palliative careworker, she says that after waiting fruitlessly for Joe’s visa, an immigration official told her that if she wanted to see her husband again, she would have to go to him and reapply when they were living as a married couple. “I had no choice. Joe is my husband,” she says. She was, however, given blunt advice from her parents, both ex-military, when they heard. “Don’t do it!” “Because they knew exactly how it was there,” says Stephanie. She had already realised Port Moresby, where she was to live, is classified as the third most dangerous city in the world, though the poverty and danger she was to encounter did leave her stunned. The six months she spent there have, however, provided motivation to bring about awareness of the people’s needs, and to do something to help. She finally realised, after those six months, that her return to Joe seeming not to have altered any thing about his application. So she decided: “Do I just sit here and suffer, or do I go back

FATH ER

and do somethi ng about it?” She’s come back, to tell their story and also to ask for help for the people they worked with as a missionary couple in the city slums. Stephanie says she has a strong Christian faith and after being introduced to Joe by friends, he asked to go to her Raupara church with her. So their relationship grew. However, once she was in Port Moresby, Joe was not able to work to supplement their tiny missionary income. “He had to be my full-time bodyguard.” The huge poverty, lack of sanitation, constant anger and physical danger, even witchcraft, resulted in conditions that Stephanie finds it hard to describe. Their home, a hut built above a sewer, flooded regularly, for example. “We’d be ankle deep in sewage. Joe had to dive into the sewer to unblock the drain.” This at a time when Covid had just broken out. Rats, mice, cockroaches running around freely were just a fact of life. Then all the fuses blew in their suburb. There was no quick fix – or any fix - so no light or heat for three months. Stephanie says part of their role was to teach cleanliness and rubbish disposal, as well as hand washing. “We used our New Zealand experience for that.” She found it especially hard however, to see how unsafe, sometimes violent and sad the children’s lives were. “Lice, scabies were just a daily thing,” she says. “Every child has the right to education, clean water and a safe environment.” To get clean water, each day she joined men, women, children and old people climbing a mountain, in tropical heat and humidity, to carry heavy

containers of their own clean water for drinking and washing. And that’s where she’s focussing her efforts, raising money for one, or perhaps even two rainwater tanks. “About $1600 each. I think that’s doable?” she asks. She is organising a fundraiser for the end of September with details to be finalised. She is also hitting local streets and contacting businesses. And Stephanie also talks about her dreams for the children. “They are so hungry for knowl-

edge. And they were hungry to talk to me, the first white wo m a n t h e y e ve r k n e w. “How can they get ahead without any education?” she asks, adding that the school supplies are very basic. Just pens and paper. And there are 92 children to one teacher.” Her passion saw her and Joe end up on national TV pleading for government help. The cost of her Papuan experience has been huge. Aviation and legal requirements meant three

cancelled flights. She finally had to transit through Singapore, costing $6000 of borrowed money being repaid from her wages as a casual palliative careworker. And when Joe does come back, the costs could be the same for him. ”We are left with nothing. Nothing,” she says. “But this is God’s path. It has meant suffering. But I’ll carry on doing God’s work until the day I die.”

Winter Winter

Warmth

Exercise and the common cold

My heat pump is blowing cold air! A common question during winter is, “Why does my heat pump blow cold air?” The answer is usually twofold. Firstly, heat pumps need to be set correctly. Mark from Airfy Heat Pump Cleaning says. “I spend time with my clients talking through the operations of their heat pumps so they can get the most out of them, efficiency-wise meaning lower power bills, and comfort wise a healthier home. “I have been known to talk to customers about all manner of home heating solutions that help improve people’s homes, from home ventilation systems, heat transfer systems to ‘just how do I use a heat pump correctly’? “Do I need to leave it going 24 hours a day?” A good debate that one. The answer is: everyone’s situation is different so maybe yes or maybe no. Secondly, how clean is your heat pump? If your heat pump is clogged with dust and dirt the coils cannot transfer the heat efficiently to the air, meaning your heat pump has to work harder to maintain

the temperature you require. If your heat pump is working harder it will have to take more breaks (defrost cycles). This is when your heat pump has to stop and warm up the outside unit, causing cold air to be blown inside. I was at a customer’s house last week and he was complaining about condensation on his windows and how bad it was. He even had one of those window suckers. I told him the solution was easy you have over 50 pot plants in your living room all giving off moisture . Get rid of them. It turns out the solution was not that easy, because it was either the pot plants stay or the husband leaves the wife! “I have even been to customers’ homes here in Blenheim where the tenant is struggling for breath”, Mark says. “They tell me they cannot stay in the living room with the heat pump going. They have to stay in their room for at least one hour after it has turned off. “I had a look at the heat pump and the whole indoor unit was full of mould! Turning on the heat pump was spreading mould spores into the room! No wonder they

could not breathe. “I know this was an extreme case, but keeping your heat pump cleaned and sanitized is important, not just a filter clean!” Correct operation of your heat pump is important. Keeping it clean and well maintained will save you thousands of dollars in the long run. Also making your home a more healthier place to live, fewer doctor visits and even a longer life. “People are always concerned about how much power they will use if they use the heat pump more often or leave it on”, Mark says. “I simply explain about my own situation, my house, my heat pump and show them my power bill.” So if your heat pump is blowing cold air this winter simply call Mark at Airify Heat Pump Cleaning. “I will come and give your systems a once over making sure it is in its best possible condition for both heating and health. Don’t forget I can also change your home ventilation filters.” Give me a call today to book me on 0800 24 34 74 or book online www.airify. co.nz.

If you’re looking for a safe way to prevent colds, regular exercise may be the ticket. And you don’t have to run a marathon, either. Moderate activity is all you need. Exercise improves your overall fitness, which can help boost your immune system, the body’s defence against infections.

11

2018

Some studies show that ‘moderate intensity’ exercise may cut down the number of colds you get. That type of activity includes things like a 20 to 30 minute walk every day, going to the gym every other day, or biking with your kids a few times a week.

Three faces of Manu Ora GP’s Sara Simmons, Rachel Inder and business manager Anna Young are three of the faces patients and their whānau will see as they visit their new-established Manu Ora medical practice. They bring the sort of varied background that reflects our community, but on one thing they are united – a driving commitment to improving Māori health in this area. Sara, who is Ngāi Tahu has, as well as her GP experience and firsthand knowledge of balancing her work with the demands of a young family (strongly supported by her own whānau), a background in palliative care. Rachel, like Sara, grew up in Blenheim and attended Marlborough Girls’ College and medical school at Otago University. She is Pākehā, and passionate about improving Māori health, prevention of illness and a holistic approach. “The Maori concept of health is Te Whare Tapa Whā, where there are four key elements: taha wairua, spiritual health, taha Tinana, physical health, taha hinengaro, mental

A dream is realised

Two passionate Blenheim doctors are this week realising a dream. Doctors Sara Simmons and Rachel Inder met over four years ago while working in general practice and realised they shared the same deep concerns about the model of patient care, especially as it related to caring for vulnerable communities and their Māori patients in particular. “The current system isn’t working in the best interests of the patients or the staff,” says Sara. “And it doesn’t allow for reducing the inequities Māori experience in the health system.” About a year ago, they realised they were now in a position to do something about that. “Not just to wait until someone else did it,” said Sara. Rachel agrees, adding that Blenheim is well placed for a new practice like theirs. “Marlborough is very community-minded and there is support for innovation and change. “It’s big enough to allow for new ideas and small enough to allow for a new model to be piloted to try and make a difference.” So they approached Te Tau Ihu’s Maori Wellness Services provider Te Piki Oranga and found them very interested in helping to establish a new GP practice using a Kaupapa Māori model to complement their existing suite of health services. So the practice has been set up in partnership with Te Piki Oranga, and is a charity rather than a profit-making venture. That model will mean reduced charges for whānau who are unable to afford to pay, as cost is a big barrier for many Māori and other whānau with complex health care needs..

These are the patients Sara and Rachel are hoping will feel welcomed and want to visit Manu Ora, but Manu Ora is also able to enrol patients who wish to experience the same quality care but are able to pay for the service. They will also be reducing the number of patients per doctor and employing more nurses, increasing availability of appointments and enabling more time to be spent with whānau when

they need it. This will also ensure that the time-consuming follow-ups that are essential for holistic care, including liaison with other services and follow up communications to patients, are undertaken – without stressing doctors to breaking point. That’s something they have seen happening and they believe their new model will better serve the needs of both whānau and kaimahi (staff).

A special home Manu Ora, Blenheim’s newest GP practice at 219 Howick Road, may have the usual gravel car park at the front but inside it looks out to a sunny and well-tended garden, filled with native plants and large beautifully tended trees. The house served as the old Māori Affairs building until the late 1950’s, when it was bought by the Walker whānau and it was their home until 2016. “There are many fond memories from both the whānau that lived in the house and the wider community for the productive garden and fruit trees, not to mention the fun that was had in the back yard and the hills of Harling Park close by. The original peach, apple and walnut tree

are still producing, which has been a yummy bonus.” says Rachel. It has, they say, a warm and welcoming feel. “Whānau-centred,” says Sara. They had a dawn blessing on June 16, “which was really special,” says Rachel, and their launch celebration will occur on August 18, with invited guests – but it is planned to be relatively low-key. It will, however, be an important welcoming of mana whenua and the Wairau community to Manu Ora, and a thank you to those who have supported them thus far. Then their work begins in earnest, with patients able to enrol and visit Manu Ora for appointments since Monday – and they have already done so.

support the particular – and pressing – health needs of Māori and low-income families. So much so that Te Piki and Nuku Health formed a partnership to develop Manu Ora, a general practice with charitable status Te Piki Oranga currently offers a wide and varied range of primary care services such as nursing, tamariki ora, mental health, alcohol and other drugs, smoking cessation, social services, bowel screening, Tu Hono (support services for pregnant women) children’s oral health, outreach immunisation, adult mental health , child and adolescent mental health and Sit and Bfit programmes for those over 55. But despite this wide range of programmes, they had identified an “horrendous” gap in services to Maori. “A critical piece of our holistic approach was missing,” says Ricky. They investigated options to provide complete primary care services, including buying into a current practice or creating one of their own. “Then we fortuitously met Dr Rachel Inder and Dr Sara Simmons who were interested in creating one.” Māori have a significantly lower life expectancy than other sections of New Zealand’s population and Ricky says it is clear the current model of general practice is not meeting their needs. He quotes the Ministry of Health figures

for 2018: “Māori males’ life expectancy is generally 73.4 years and 77.1 years for female. It is 81.0 years for non-Māori males and 84.5 years for non-Maōri females. “Common barriers to access have been cost, unable to see a GP of choice, feeling of being patronised, power imbalances, assumptions of health literacy levels, health jargon and time constraints, meaning a focus on the immediate issue only rather than a holistic approach,” he adds. However, this is not just a problem for Maori with the current practice model “unsustainable” for both patients and doctors. “There is a real issue with doctor burnout. We are seeing it often here in Wairau.”

Prepare for the new season: By Wally Richards The new season is upon us and if we want to have a great season there are a number of gardening things to do and the sooner you get started the better. Firstly ponder a minute how last season was and what problems you had to deal with? There is every likelihood that this coming season will present the same problems. They tell us that this winter has been one of the warmest for a long time. Overall I would say it’s been very wet and mild with some cold snaps. The best winter is several good frosts followed by nice sunny winter days which helps reduce our gardening problems greatly. A perfect spring is one that takes off early with nice sunny day and warm temperatures for a week or two then a cold blast up from the South Pole for a few days before turning to normal spring conditions. The warm patch wakes up the pests and diseases and they start to get organised and multiply when the cold snap comes and wipes them out. If that is how spring goes then you will not have much problem with pests and diseases till December or January and even then they will be a lot less than a normal year. The answer then is to hit the early emergence of pests and diseases hard with effective controls which is like having a cold blast from the South Pole. Now is the time to get started as your plants are starting to move with the longer daylight hours. Insect pests are fairly easy to control when their numbers are low coming out of winter. Allow them to bread and soon one female may produce about 300 off spring

and that 300 can be come 150x 300 = 45,000, all within a month or so. Not all pests increase that rapidly but whitefly and psyllids can, followed by thrips and aphids. To help with control use Wallys Neem Tree Powder when you are planting by putting a little in the planting hole and some on the soil surface in the rooting zone (but not against the trunk of plants). Existing plants such as roses. Sprinkle the Neem Powder on to the soil in the root zone. The powder is quick acting and the smell of it disguises the smell of the plant making it more difficult for pests to find. Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil is used at only 5ml per litre of warm water sprayed over plants late in the afternoon; will stop any pests on the plant from feeding which means they will starve to death. Use with Raingard and you only have to repeat every 2 weeks. Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil also has some fungicide properties which can help prevent leaf diseases such as black spot and rust. It is a natural control and works a bit like the chemical one (which has been banned) that was called Shield. Neem and is much safer and predator insect safe. (They don’t eat plants only the pests do that). So it is not going to harm the bees, ladybirds etc. Diseases that attack your plants can be controlled by using three products, Wallys Liquid Copper, potassium permanganate and Wallys Perkfection. Wallys Perkfection is absorbed by the plant’s foliage and quickly moves though the plant including the root system to fortify the plant’s immune system and assist

in the prevention and control of many diseases. No withholding period if used on food crops. Excellent for buxus hedges, silver leaf disease and all wet weather diseases. It can only be used once a month as too much can slow down plant growth. There are two application rates which for first spray at 7mls per litre and then only 4 mls each month thereafter. Can be used with Wallys Neem Tree Oil. Wallys Liquid Copper and potassium permanganate with Raingard makes an effective combination of protection on the plants’ foliage. Used with Raingard you only need to spray every 14 days except for curly leaf in stone fruit where you need to spray every seven days while the leaves are growing, to protect them till the time of the disease is past, which is about eight weeks starting from leaf bud swell. When the leaves are out of bud burst then add to the spray one lot of Wallys Perkfection. Another interesting one we found some years ago was Wally Cell Strength-

ening Spray helped control curly leaf in stone fruit. It could be added to the copper and potassium permanganate spray. While on the subject of curly leaf, some gardeners have found that Wallys Ocean Solids sprinkled under the tree from trunk to just beyond drip line also helped control. The potassium permanganate is great for helping control of black spot on roses. Use with Raingard (Can add the copper if you wish) and spray while still dormant and repeat fortnightly. Another product that greatly increases the health of plants, making them more disease resistant, is Wallys Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) which can be added to any of the sprays already mentioned. A must for food crops giving you tastier and bigger crops from a fortnightly spray. Wet weather has brought about moss, liverworts, algae and lichens. Wallys Moss and Liverwort control will deal to these pest growths quickly and effectively.

Re: Traffic lights In response to the Aucklander wanting traffic lights in Blenheim. I’ve just been up there, enduring long waits at traffic lights.

Great information A massive thanks to the admin of Marlborough Cool Cat Chat on Facebook who over the weekend of the horrendous weather kept the page flowing with all the latest information and updates about the weather event. I for one was very reassured and grateful for their efforts.

Thank you ... To the Covid 19 vaccinator team who visited Endeavour Park, Picton on Friday, July 16. Very organized, very efficient but always client orientated. THANK YOU.

Where is the justification in that. I’m sure there would be a lot of readers out there agreeable where is the fairness, come on businesses look after your loyal staff it’s not hard.

Smokers cigarette butts I was following a silver ute driving through town on Thursday. Then, to my disappointment the driver pokes his rubbish, a cigarette butt, out of his window onto the road. What part of ‘Clean up your own mess!’ or ‘Stop polluting our oceans!’ does this guy not understand? Butts are not biodegradable and if dumped in the gutter or on the road will get washed down the drain and into the sea causing problems elsewhere. These small tar-filled bits of rubbish need to be disposed of by the smoker. Put it in your own litter bag or car ashtray, mate!

To the Aucklander who felt they had the right to criticise Marlborough drivers, go back to Auckland!!

Were has it gone? What happened to the big flash sign attached to SBS building? Has someone forgotten to pay the power bill?!

Much appreciated Thank you to the kind person who found my car keys and handed them into Countdown in town on Friday, July 29.

No to 3 waterways Mr Mayor and councillors, don’t go with this 3 waterways, we need to be like Napier and Invercargill and stay on our own. Or you need to ask your rate payers what they want. The 3 Waters proposal will affect us all. Rate payers demand a say in the future of our district.

Aquarium closure Why?? The children love to go feed the fish ... and I love the selection of movies they have, especially during the school holidays when there isn’t anything worth looking at in Blenheim for seniors. He told me that Port Marlborough are locking the doors Thurs 22. So who will feed the fish inside? Will they be left to starve? The owner just doesn’t want to leave and lose his business. What’s Port Marlborough’s plan for the site? It’s going to be a loss of an attraction, for what? I hope all the animals find a much nicer home. I am sure they do a great job in the background with rescue sea creatures but I feel sad for the permanent ones, it looks yucky to me. I would be too embarrassed to take visitors there.

Angry outbursts at farmers’ meeting By Glenise Dreaver

How the Government’s proposal to manage the country’s three waters: drinking water, stormwater and wastewater, will affect Marlborough’s farmers was the subject of sometimes angry discussion at the region’s Federated Farmers meeting held last Thursday. The Government has set aside $761m to reform the country’s water infrastructure and create a new national water regulator Taumata Arowai. While there is an element of choice for councils, they need to decide, by the end of September, whether they will transfer their water assets to one of the four asyet-unnamed new water services entities being created nationwide. The local farmer’s group identified strong disadvantages to them in the suggested structure, one going as far as to say there would be “Civil War”. Marlborough and Tasman could potentially be split into both water entities C and D. Entity C takes in the North Island’s East Coast and Hawkes Bay down to Wellington and entity D covers the majority of South Island.

No wood gathering

Like all councils across the country, MDC has already received the first stage - “tranche one” - of its water services funding. The $6m from the Government for that has been put towards water infrastructure upgrades as council continues to investigate the costs and benefits of the move. National MP Stuart Smith and Deputy Mayor Nadine Taylor had been invited to the meeting to listen to members’ concerns. Stuart told those present that the Opposition did consider an over-arching regulatory body would be a good thing. However, they took issue with the fact that well-managed places like Marlborough would be subsidising “lazy” councils who had spent their water depreciation costs in other areas. On Monday, he said: “I am very concerned that the proposal all but shuts out local representation with only 50 per cent of governance and a 75 per cent super majority required to approve anything without the approval of iwi. “Yet they want to rush this through without giving ratepayers the same opportunity, which surely, as the ultimate owners of the Wood gathering from the Wairau River Reserve is no longer permitted a council spokesperson says. “There is an unspoken rule in Marlborough that after a

infrastructure, is our right”. Nadine drew approval at the meeting when she told those present the council had decided to “crunch” the government’s figures to check whether the benefits were what the Government claimed they would be. It was both the time frame, and flood, it is acceptable to reclaim branches and trees. But, he says, about a dozen people consistently, throughout the year, take wood from our reserves, which usually includes

the structure of the proposed regional representative group that excited most of the anger that surfaced at the meeting, with the level of iwi representation being strongly challenged. At one stage, Stuart asked the meeting not to “shoot the messenger” and asked for Nadine to be the cutting down of live trees. “They don’t differentiate between post-storm debris and going in regularly to cut down healthy trees,” he says. “They also sell this firewood

Dogs allowed back in town from Sunday 1 August On 1 August our four-legged friends were allowed back into Blenheim’s CBD as the new Dog Control Policy and Dog Control Bylaw 2021 came into effect. Animal Control Subcommittee Chair, Councillor Jamie Arbuckle says the Marlborough community is passionate about dogs and dog access to public places. “The submissions received during the recent bylaw review reflect that and it’s fantastic that dogs will be allowed back into the CBD provided they are on-leash and under control at all times,” he said. “It’s important for owners to note that dogs will still be prohibited in Seymour Square and that it’s their responsibility to clean up after their furry friends.” In other changes to the bylaw, dogs will be allowed off-leash along the Taylor River, from the Taylor Dam to the Henry Street bridge on the Blenheim town side, and to the Alfred Street bridge on the true left bank (west side). They will be allowed off-leash on both sides of Riverside Park, north of the Sinclair Street rail bridge. In Pollard Park, Churchill Glade and Waterlea Gardens dogs will be allowed on-leash but are prohibited from the Blenheim golf course and the Baden Powell corner grassed area, BBQ picnic areas and the children’s playground.

In Picton, dogs will still be allowed on-leash in the CBD and will now also be allowed in Nelson Square provided they are on-leash. Our canine companions will be allowed off-leash on the Esson’s Valley and Tirohanga tracks and the lower Picton to Waikawa Track. They will also be allowed off-leash at the Waitohi Domain. At Victoria Domain Reserves in Picton, dogs will need to be on-leash on roadways and the formed walking and shared walking and biking tracks, but will be prohibited from the mountain bike tracks. Under the new bylaw, dogs will be allowed on-leash at the Wairau Valley Golf Course and Recreation Reserve. At Ward Beach, dogs will be allowed on-leash in the car park and on the beach, north of the boat launching area to Chancet Rocks and south of the boat launching area to Needles Point. They will be allowed off-leash at the Ward Beach boat launching area but are prohibited at Ward Beach north beyond Chancet Rocks to Marfells Beach, and south beyond Needles Point to the district boundary with Kaikoura. Councillor Arbuckle says the new bylaw aims to achieve a balance between the control of dogs and recognition of the community benefits of responsible dog ownership.

sports talk With Jacob Page

Carrington courageous despite heavy workload Lisa Carrington is now our greatest Olympian and Tokyo 2020 may not be her final chapter. Sure, you can make an argument against it, that’s the subjective nature of sport but if gold medals count the most, then she is at the top of the pile. By winning her third gold of these Games in the K1 500m on Thursday afternoon, Ohope’s finest

took her Olympic medal haul to six, one more than fellow kayakers Ian Ferguson and Paul MacDonald, and equestrian Mark Todd. Her five gold medals also pushes her ahead of Ferguson. When other athletes are overjoyed at winning silver and bronze, like they were when the 32-year-old won the K1 200m event, you realise how utterly dominant Lisa

Rep fixtures continue for indoor bowlers It has been a busy time for Marlborough Indoor Bowls recently since the National Championships were held in Blenheim in June. The A.S. Paterson Trophy was played in Nelson with the Marlborough team making a good start holding third equal place after two rounds. After the five rounds finished the strong Ashburton team won with 124 points, followed by Golden Bay/Motueka on 94.5, Canterbury on 92.5, Nelson in fourth on 71, Marlborough on 65.5 and West Coast 50.5. Ashburton qualify to play for the Welsh Trophy in Hamilton. On Saturday, a combined Marlborough/Golden Bay team played the touring North Island test team in Nelson. The North Island team included many of the top North Island Indoor Bowlers which was always going to make the match a big ask

for the local players. The hosts won three games and had four halved matches to give a final score of 19-5 to the touring team. This Saturday, 48 players will make up 12 indoor bowls teams to play against Nelson for the Lillias Fairhall and Cassia Warnes Trophies. This annual event is played over six rounds in Nelson this year. After winning the Lemon Shield in Nelson in July, the Marlborough team should do well. On Tuesday August 17, the Clubs of Marlborough will be holding their monthly triples tournament starting at 7pm - entries to Glen Hurcomb. This will be followed by the President’s Challenge Cup on Saturday August 21 and the Marlborough Open Singles event on Sunday August 22. Entries to Gary Parlane.

Carrington is and has been for more than a decade. The girl from Ohope has reached heights north even she could have dreamed of as she watched Danyon Loader win double-gold in the pool at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Being the youngest of three kids, it’s clear trying to keep up with her two brothers by taking up surf lifesaving served Carrington well.

She has been the benchmark in her sport for a decade and with just three years until the Paris Games, there is no reason Carrington can’t dominate at one more major event. The best part about Carrington is she is ruthless on the water but a humble Kiwi off it. She epitomises how every parent should want their child to act when success comes calling.

Veteran sports journalist Brendan Telfer believes Carrington has the same mix of speed, power and endurance that Peter Snell ran his races on the track, that is good enough for me. It is hard to know if she has another Olympic campaign in her but she has the mental makeup to do it in three years if she can find the motivation.
