Liquid gold By Glenise Dreaver
Dr Chris Piper of Isobel Olives is one of Olive NZ’s 2021 gold medal winners in their certified Extra Virgin Olive Oil awards, announced at the weekend. He began his venture into olives in Marlborough in 2016, when he purchased a grove of 90 trees near Rarangi. Chris says he had first moved into olives in Kumeu, when he purchased a lifestyle block after forty years in veterinary
medicine in South Africa, the UK and Auckland. That venture had some 700 trees – and the first year he entered the Olivetti Group he won Best in Show and three other golds. “But I’ve had to wait for ten years now to get another one.” He had come to his smaller Marlborough property after six years in Kumeu. “I have a brother here, two nephews and some good friends,” he says. Continued on page 1.

Gold and silver medal haul for local olive growers Continued from page 1. This year, he’s celebrating the success of his “semi-retirement” venture, with a gold for his Commercial Medium Robust blended oil. “Almond and black pepper notes on nose, pleasant and balanced in the mouth,” said the judges’ notes. He won a silver for his single varietal Koroneiki. That was described by the judges as “Floral notes over green grass on nose with lingering balanced finish in the mouth.” Chris says he sources and presses olives from other growers as well as from his own trees. “A harvest of 400-500 trees.” This is the second year of pressing from what was the old Marlborough Press Ltd machine.
With the downturn in the industry, it had been sold at the wish of the-then shareholders, but Chris was part of a group that purchased it. There has been a lot of work in getting it up and running well again. Last year they did 57 tonnes, and this year there was, he says, over 100 tonnes. “We’re hoping that as more growers find out it’s running again, they will become shareholders,” he says. He says the days when Marlborough was a stronghold of the industry have gone, their land taken by winegrowers – and he doesn’t see much change likely in the foreseeable future. “And the last year Marlborough won gold was in 2014.”
Now top winners tend to come from Kapiti and the Wairarapa. Marlborough, with just a few of the 165 entries, did make its presence felt this year however. As well as the Isobel’s gold and silver, The RSA’s Three Services Burleigh Grove Extra Virgin Olive Oil, from John Cragg, won a silver in the Commercial Medium – Blends section. “Fresh black pepper, green grass and rocket aromas on nose, astringent finish on the palate,” said the judges. Janine Mayson of Marlborough’s Faversham’s extra virgin olive oil also won silver with their Boutique Medium Blend. “Almond and tomato on nose, smooth in the mouth with light chilli finish.”

Garden festival struck down The Rapaura Springs Garden Festival has been felled by Covid Level 2 restrictions. The committee behind New Zealand’s premier garden event, scheduled to take place from November 3-7, yesterday had to cancel this year’s event for the first time in its twenty-eight-year history. “It is not a decision we have made lightly,” says president Tim Crawford. “The committee and staff have
worked through every different scenario in the hope we could avoid this decision, but under current Covid Level 2 restrictions we simply cannot go ahead.” With a huge line-up of tours and workshops, and record-breaking ticket sales to date, Marlborough’s largest four-day event was shaping up to be the best ever. But with physical distancing required at all events, and Auckland remaining at Alert Level 3, the event

Top young winemaker Peter Russell from Matua Wines has won the 2021 Tonnellerie de Mercurey Marlborough Young Winemaker of the Year. He took home a prize package including $1000 cash, travel expenses to the national final in Central Otago, an educational trip with Fruitfed Supplies and the opportunity of being an associate judge at the 2021 Marlborough Wine Show. Peter was defending the title so was delighted to win the Marlborough competition for a second year in a row. He will now focus on taking out the national title when he competes against finalists from Central Otago and the North Island at the national final which will be held later in the year. Ruby McManaway from Yealands came second and also won the best Fruitfed Supplies Speech as she kept the audience entertained on the topic of Low Alcohol Wines. Alun Kilby from Marisco took out third place. The competition took place on October 6.

NZDFI Fielday postponed Caption
The Marlborough Research Centre has announced that the New Zealand Dryland Forests Field Day planned for Wednesday November 10 has been postponed. A new date will be advised soon. In another change, organisers will be running the field day as an online event, where information about the field day sites, and about growing and utilising durable eucalypts, will be made available. All those who registered for the November 10 event will be refunded.
Another Covid casualty MORE FM has announced that, for the first time in 43 years, Blenheim’s Mistletoe Market has had to be cancelled. Locals have, however, been promised a bigger and better one in 2022.

COVID hitting Fabric-a-Brac The South Island’s first Fabric-abrac event has had to be postponed till next year after COVID restrictions meant it was too hard to run the event as planned for 10 days’ time on Saturday October 16. Fabric-a-brac is a charity event supporting Hospice Marlborough, bringing together sewers, quilters, and other fabric fans. Organiser Tracy Johnston says it will be held when there is a

window of opportunity, but that probably won’t be until March or April next year. “The 100 person limit indoors could have worked if it was a revolving 100, but it is 100 in and out, then the next lot of 100. I considered an outdoor option but that is just too risky with weather.” Tracy says the response to holding Fabric-a-brac in Blenheim has been huge, with 19 stallholders
with some amazing collections of vintage and modern fabric, haberdashery, sewing supplies and patterns wanting to attend. The Hospice Shop has been receiving and bundling up donated fabrics and sewing supplies for months, and a pop up cafe operating with barista coffee and baked goods supplied and served by a group of Marlborough Good Bitch Bakers members and other

MDC, with funding support from the Marlborough Mayoral Relief Fund, will subsidise water taxi services for residents, workers and visitors from Havelock out to the Kenepuru Sound, as part of its July storm recovery support programme. Recovery Manager Dean Heiford said he hoped to expand the service from Picton to Torea and Mistletoe Bays soon, with the subsidy planned to continue until the end of March 2022. “The subsidy is $25 per passenger per trip for scheduled and pre-booked services through the Kenepuru to and from Havelock. Bookings can be made directly with water taxi service providers and also through the Marlborough i-SITE, or call 0800 777 181.” “The service will launch through Havelock and open up to Picton as roading through Torea and Mistletoe bays allows.

A taste of opera Giving Marlburians the chance to experience a taste of opera is the motive behind an event initiated by Whitehaven Wines, in collaboration with the New Zealand Opera. Whitehaven, through its hospitality partnership with New Zealand Opera, is giving Marlburians an opportunity to experience opera in a fun and engaging format. “It’s taken quite a bit of planning to get to this stage, but the timing gives us all something fun to look forward to after a challenging year,” says Whitehaven’s managing director Sue White. A Taste of Opera will be a one-of-
a-kind evening of wine and song. Held in the Whitehaven Wine Room at the ASB Theatre in Blenheim, the programme has been jointly created by Marlborough-based baritone Robert Tucker and Whitehaven’s chief winemaker Peter Jackson. Each aria performed during the 90-minute concert will embody the style and nuances of the six varieties of Whitehaven wines that will be served. Robert will be joined by soprano Georgia Jamieson Emms and pianist Mark Dorrell. Thomas de Mallet Burgess, general director New Zealand Opera, is de-
lighted to be working with Whitehaven Wines on this unique concert, saying that Whitehaven Wines has been a valued supporter of New Zealand Opera for some time. “He says he hopes the evening might inspire people to enjoy two of life’s greatest blessings at the same time and travel for more opera in the future. “Our special thanks to Robert Tucker for cultivating this concert in his hometown.” Tickets are now on sale, online or at the ASB theatre at $60 per person and are strictly limited. That includes six wine tastings and canapes.

Vintage Book Fair funds help local youth Day off The committee of the Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery Society has decided to cancel their planned Open Day, which was to be held at Brayshaw Park on October 31. “This is being done in light of the uncertainty around the Covid situation,” says spokesperson Jocelyn Burnett. “However, there will be a time in the future that we can hold this event, which is always popular with families.”
A small group of Blenheim Lions spent an interesting couple of hours recently. They were at the Pine Valley education facility, to which they donated money from last year’s Book Fair takings. The visit allowed them to see exactly how this charity helped local young people, and also how the money had been spent. Other charities supported by the $5000 raised by Book Fair funds, done in association with Beavertown Lions, saw donations to the Life Flight Rescue Helicopter and LandSAR (Land Search and Rescue) Thanks to the Lions, Pine Valley now has a house for a permanent caretaker and are hoping to welcome a host of schoolchildren in the near future. The Lions Book Fair for this year had to be postponed but they hope to be up and running again by mid-March 2022 at the Waterlea Racecourse.

Happy Healthy Gut Discovery

KORU NUTRITION Like many people with retirement approaching, Betty was looking forward to the new chapter and adventures that lay ahead. Sitting in her office, she often thought about plans for the future. Certain things fell into place and Betty decided to retire early; getting out of the day to day grind and explore all the possibilities that lay ahead. One thing she was really looking forward to was exploring her diet and general health. “I had worked in a sedentary job all my life and many times I found myself wanting to change and try things to really support my health so my gut and bowels remain happy and healthy. To begin, because now I had the time, I looked at my diet and realised the food I was putting into my body needed to change.” As Betty explored, she also discovered that there were a number of amazing supplements she could try in support of the dietary adjustments for a healthy and active retirement. “Being aware of what I should and shouldn’t eat was the start of the journey to living my best life. Then finding the right supplements to compliment was my next step.” “I had already been using Koru FX to support healthy muscles and

joints and when I saw that Koru Nutrition had Koru Gut Restore; a product to support gut health; well I thought I should try it.” A happy gut equals a happy you. To have good gut health, you need good gut flora. Your body naturally has good and bad bacteria throughout your digestive system. By taking both the patented prebiotic with probiotics you support the body’s natural response to cultivate more good bacteria over the bad.
So why combine probiotic or prebiotic together and not just by themselves? Well one only needs to look at a garden for an example. If you put garden feed down then your good plants will grow well but so will the weeds. While putting down the feed, you also need to weed. Prebiotics and Prebiotics are scientifically known to support bacterial balance in your gut and digestive tracts. “I am so happy with my retired life and what I have discovered
about myself. To know what I should be avoiding and what I should be putting into my body is mind opening. Having a beautifully healthy gut has helped me to be a healthy person.” Whatever your need is for supporting your gut flora, Koru Gut Restore has you covered. Spot the message for children

Real Locals - Real Value
The Cancer Society held its annual Melanoma Awareness Week between Monday September 27 and Friday October 1. Blenheim Primary School supported the campaign, using a “Get Spotted” theme. Principal Denyse Healy says the school’s incoming leadership team of six students, who will be seniors next year, had backed up the message by working on activities relating to spots. “It’s helped to kick off their leadership roles for 2022,” she says. Last Monday, they held a spotty hat painting competition, and on Tuesday there was a Get Spotted colouring competition. That was also the day the students came in mufti with a spots theme. On Wednesday, when the Sun visited, the children were playing Musical Spots, with prizes donated by the Cancer Society, while on Thursday, says Denyse, there was a ”really fun” treasure hunt that involved the whole school. “They had to find small items hidden in the grounds – a sun hat, sunscreen, a towel, shoes, sunglasses, some shade, and a shirt.” Each treasure had a letter of the alphabet beside it. The next task was to put those letters together to spell a word — which proved to be “Sunsmart.”

Minister honours local volunteers By Glenise Dreaver
Last week’s visit of the Minister for Seniors and Associate Minister of Health Dr Ayesha Verrall marked a red letter day for Alzheimer’s Marlborough. Dr Verrall was welcomed with a powhiri, led by Ma Swann, at their Day Centre on Wither Road on Wednesday October 6, before she mingled with day club members and met volunteers at a small ceremony. She had come to present a special silver award certificate to the fifty-plus volunteers who were runners up in the 2021 Ministry of Health Volunteer Awards for outstanding achievement in the community. Manager Catherine Donnelly said she had nominated the volunteers as they work towards their aim of a dementia friendly Marlborough, and whose work covers a huge range of activities and many hours of service. “They do the garden, they bake and cook, they fund-raise, they entertain our day club members, they are drivers who bring our members to and from the centre and out for trips and many other acts of service,” she said. Earlier, at the council chambers, Mayor John Leggett had welcomed Dr Verrall to Marlborough along with a small group of representatives from the council’s Older Persons Forum. There, the Minister had congratulated the region on its coordinated approach to the issues facing the elderly, commending the forum for their organised seniors focus, a model she said she would like to see all through the country. She also visited Brayshaw Park and met with enthusiasts from the Vintage Car Club.

We are one people Dear Ed I agree with proud Kiwi. I am a proud 83-year-old Kiwi who has many Maori friends. We all agree Maori language and customs should be preserved. But stop this hell bent rush to change everything to Maori. Most of us are fed up with it. Maori never can or will be New Zealand’s first language,

leave as is. Just confusing saying place names in Maori then repeating in English. Maori can’t agree their ancestors called New Zealand Aotearoa anyway. 3 waters is a slippery government move to give Maori the water rights. Water doesn’t belong to them as they claim, it belongs to us all. Just a bit over the top. Fed up Kiwi Name and address supplied.
Dear Ed I am surprised that someone would want to remove a 91-year-old tree - or any mature tree. Deciduous trees provide open branches to let in the sun during winter and then foliage to provide shade from Marlborough’s hot dry summers. They can also protect from the nor-wester winds. Falling leaves provide a source of mulch as well as go into gutters. Clearing leaves is a small “price” to pay for the benefit received. Trees take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. It’s basic. The environment needs them. New Zealand’s Government has an aim to plant 1 billion trees. If people persist in removing perfectly healthy trees, more will be needed. If a tree is on council-maintained land causing a bother, then a request to MDC should get some help to solve leaf problems. Don’t cut it down! Bridget Orman, Blenheim

New principal describes walking the talk
John Kendal took up the post of principal of Marlborough Boys’ College in February this year. He talks to Sun journalist Glenise Dreaver about the changes his appointment has brought to the school. It’s fair to say MBC principal John Kendal has brought a new perspective to the school, with a background that extends far beyond the traditional educational context. (Though there is plenty of that with leadership roles in such places as Rotorua Boys’ High School, Palmerston North Boys’ High School, and more recently, Northland College, which is co-educational). John started his teaching career in the primary sector before moving into secondary 15 years ago. He is of proud Tapuika Iwi heritage and has taught both Te Reo Maori and physical education. With both parents being teachers, his pathway could seem pre-determined; but his own educational pathway has, he believes, been strengthened not just by Te Ao Maori but also by his time working as a referee development officer for NZ Rugby. “This is where I saw there what a high-performance organisation looks like,” says John. “That’s hugely important to me.” He believes that allows him to provide strong leadership and direction, and he sees that as vital in getting staff to come together as a team. His Maori perspective, he says, keeps him grounded. “It’s given me a strong sense of who I am and whose shoulders I stand on.” That’s clear on meeting him, where John rises to his feet and presents his powerful mihi. He’s signalled his commitment to Maori right from the start by bringing whanau into the school. “They saw that I am a principal who wants to listen.”
He smiles as he recalls the kaumatua who whispered quietly to him after one early meeting: “Finally, we’re going to be listened to.” The Monday, Wednesday and Friday staff meetings now all start with a karakia and end with a waiata. John says he is delighted to feel that staff are now able to respond to the new emphasis on tikanga Maori, feeling they are in a safe place where they can share mihi mihi and spontaneously use Maori words and phrases. “Just learning one or two new words a day, is all it takes.” “It’s about building confidence,” he says. But Maori inclusivity isn’t the only new direction. The rainbow community is also becoming more visible and confident in the school, he says. “Inclusiveness is a big issue for young people.” As well as the cultural shift he is leading, John picks up what is, effectively, the creation of a new school. Marlborough Girls’ College and Marlborough Boys’ College retain their identities, but a joint campus will be created in Mclaughlan Street, where MGC already exists. The neighbouring Bohally Intermediate will shift to the current site of Marlborough Boys’, opening up space for the new development. The project has recently been gifted the name of Te Tatoru o Wairau by local iwi. The project hasn’t had a seamless history, but John says that being new to it, he doesn’t carry the frustrations

of the four to five years that have passed since the decision was made. “It is what it is,” he says, adding that they are now seeing progress, moving in to the design phase, with architects coming on board. “But the formula for this is Ministry driven and there’s a lot to discuss, including how to maximise the space and use of shared facilities without doubling up.” It’s about dialogue. ‘Where can

we share?’ https://www.tetatoruowairau. n z / p ost / com mu n it y-up date-from-principals gives the latest information on this. For now, Covid has added a layer of real uncertainty to their students’ lives, especially in relation to NCEA results. “The students ask, ‘Am I going to get there?” This is where he believes the school’s ethos of bringing the
boys together as a community of learners, and providing the best for them means helping each student to catch up with what has been missed, and ensuring their assessments are completed. Most of all, John says, they are asking their boys to find a passion: for leadership, for the arts, for their cultural aspirations, for sport or in academia. “Our number one concern is for the wellbeing of our young men.”

Multi-million-dollar spend on Top of the South rivers Government support for a mountain-to-sea landscape scale project to clean up rivers in the Marlborough Sounds will open up dozens of new job opportunities says Conservation Minister Kiri Allan. Three Top of the South initiatives will receive new funding through the Government’s Jobs for Nature programme, a multi-agency initiative with the purpose of creating nature-based employment in response to the economic impact of COVID-19. One local organisation to benefit is The Picton Dawn Chorus, Te Atiawa o Te Waka-a-Maui community group which will receive $700,000, enabling them to expand their predator trapping efforts from 415 to 4815 hectares. “In just five years this group has encouraged more than 600 people to trap predators in their backyards and has a team of 165 volunteers working in surrounding bush areas,” the Minister said, adding that the funding will mean eight people can be employed across three years to help with the regeneration of native birdlife, lizards, insects and forests. A second project, led by the global non-profit organisation
The Nature Conservancy, in conjunction with DOC, the Tasman, Nelson City, Buller, and Marlborough councils involves wide-scale organised weed management across 35,000 hectares of the northern South Island and will explore the possibility of expanding the protection of some sites through QEII covenanting. “Funding of $6m through Jobs for Nature will employ 29 people with mobilised teams who can work across different locations and provide support to public and private landowners in their aim to leave an environmental legacy we can all share in,” the Minister said. And the Te Hoiere/Pelorus Catchment Restoration Project is the third project to benefit, to the tune of $7.5m. “The community, including landowners, iwi, council, government agencies and businesses are already working together on the project, which covers more than 10,700 hectares of the Te Hoiere and Kaituna River and Cullen Creek catchments,” Kiri Allan said. “The region is one of the country’s most scenic spots, with the Pelorus River used as backdrop during filming of scenes for the
second of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit Trilogy. We want to keep it that way. “This investment will mean the project crew can push on with the next phase, accelerating river restoration work, planting, weed control,
animal pest control and habitat enhancement for native species such as pekapeka/bats, mioweka/banded rail and shortjaw kōkopu. “It will create job starts for up to 79 people over four years.
“A nursery will also be established on Ngāti Kuia land to propagate and grow eco-sourced natives to be planted as part of the project. and Cullen Creek catchments,” she added.

T he Universit y of the Third Age – U3A - is a global organisation with branches throughout the world. A nd in July the Blenheim branch had a party to celebrate its twentieth anniversary says one of the founding members Jacqui Buttle. “I’d belonged to a branch in Raumati, just out of Wellington,” she says. Reap had put an ad in the paper here and she was one of a group of about 20 people who attended the first meeting in the Wesley Church. Twenty years later, their numbers have grown to 255 and they have just started holding their monthly meetings at Cloudy Bay Funeral Services 15 Boyce St, Springlands. “They are absolutely wonderful,” says Jacqui of Cloudy Bay, adding that the rooms are provided free, meaning the cost for a year’s membership is just $10. She stresses that U3A’s not about people who have been to university when they were younger. “That’s got nothing to do with it. It’s about continuous lifelong learning for older people.” This week, says Jacqui, their guest speaker was Stephen Valance, ex-sur-

Unlocking key to success Literacy Aotearoa Blenheim at Criterion Lane, one of over 35 Literacy Aotearoa sites around the country, specialise in adult education. Their qualified tutors deliver a range of programmes for adults in the community and in workplaces. The goal is to help adults get the essential skills they need to succeed in life - sometimes this is helping some get their learner licence, in other cases it is teaching a range of skills to help someone enter full time study or a job/career.
Reading, writing, spelling and maths are a big part of it but there are a lot of other programmes on offer also: two programmes in Term 4 starting October 18 are Financing my Future, and Work Readiness: The Road to Employment. Earlier this year Literacy Aotearoa Blenheim won a Ministry of Pacific Peoples contract to deliver a career focused programme aimed at Pasifika in Marlborough to help people enter full time study or work.
Marietta’s stotry One of our Tupu Aotearoa students, Marietta Toma-Esau, took part in this programme and excelled. Marietta has been accepted into Literacy Aotearoa’s New Zealand Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching Level 4 tutor training programme and is now on the path to being a professional tutor. She was also awarded the Pat Robbins Zonta Scholarship for 2021. Marietta came to New Zealand to Porirua in 2018, had children and
then came to Blenheim where her husband was in seasonal work. They expanded the family and Marietta had the responsibility of running the household and doing everything that needed English. But it was a challenge for her - isolated in a strange country and town. Mariette took it upon herself to get help with her literacy and numeracy and then went on to get her learner’s licence through Literacy Aotearoa. She had always wanted to be a teacher but lacked confidence in
her English and her study abilities. She enrolled in the Tupu Aotearoa programme and the work she did meant she was eligible to enter tutor training and officially start working towards an adult teaching qualification. Marietta’s story is a great model for anyone chasing a goal - keep working at it, do not be put off, seek out people and groups who can help you, and keep making the most of opportunities to grow and chase your goal. gardening this week minutes with
Emma Thame Wedding Photographer, Copper & Lace Imagery Are you a dog or cat person? Both! Actually I have a menagerie of animals at the moment, chickens, piglet, calves, lamb, dogs, cat, pet rats and a baby possum. I’m a sucker for animals. What did you want to be when you grew up? Air hostess or receptionist.... I was only six years old lol. Not quite a hidden talent, but I’m very good at? Oversharing and talking too much, I’m an open book haha. If you could donate $1m to any charity who would it be and why? So many, but currently “I Am Hope” our mental health system and young people are suffering. My all-time favourite food is? Chocolate, especially M&Ms. The shop you can’t walk past is? At the moment it’s garden centres, although I’m not a good gardener. What song is likely to get you on the dance floor? All sorts, love rock and pop and range from ABBA to Metallica (love a range of 80s music). Your dream weekend involves? With my dogs and family at a secluded spot near the sea and beaches. If you could meet anyone in history who would it be and why? Would love to have met my grandfather on my Dad’s side. Otherwise anyone from ancient Greek times. Favourite programme or series currently watching? Anything with action or comedy. What’s one thing on your bucket list? To travel around Europe, or go to space hahaha.
Going to seed: By Wally Richards Plants have one objective in life and that is to reproduce. Reproduction is mostly done by seeding but can be also achieved through division, suckering, cloning, producing bulblets or pups. The desire to reproduce is their strongest attribute which can make gardening very difficult at times. There are two basic forms of plants. One is called annuals because they germinate, grow, flower, seed and then die. The other type are perennials which live for a number of seasons or in the case of some trees thousands of years. There are some in between such as bi-annuals which for our purpose here we will not worry about. Perennials are fairly straight forward, they live, they flower, they produce seeds, they may produce offsets, suckers (new plants from their root system). All while they live for more than one season. They can have their foliage removed and survive to generate more foliage, unlike an annual plant which if their foliage is removed the root system dies. It is the annuals that we are going to talk about because as far as I am aware they only reproduce naturally by seeding. They can in some cases be grown from cuttings. Nature if a bit of their foliage falls onto a suitable bit of dirt they could produce roots and become a clone of their parent plant. Seeds will not germinate in nature till the conditions are right which means temperatures in both soil and air along with adequate moisture. If the temperatures are right in summer but it’s too dry to germinate nothing happens till the soil moistens up sufficiently. A day of rain changes the moisture level and the seeds lying dormant germinate, which includes weeds). Two possible events may occur then; one is that further rain or your watering follows and the plants/ weeds grow up tall and strong and when maturity is reached they produce flowers and seeds. The other possibility is there is no more rain and the soil dries, the plant/weed has only grown a few inches and it will realise that it is becoming too dry and immediately mature, flower and set seed before
it dies. This is where you will see lots of baby weeds in dry areas flowering their hearts out to seed before they wither in the dry conditions. Their seed falls on to the dry dusty soil to wait for the next moist time to germinate and start the cycle all over again. From this we learn that annual plants, or ones we call weeds, when they encounter stress or checks in their growing they will feel that their lives are threatened and go to seed. We call this ‘bolting’ and you will see the term bolt resistant, which means the particular species will tolerate a bit of stress before going to seed. When it comes to non fruiting vegetable plants we want them to reach maturity without going to seed prematurely. So our cabbages, lettuce, silverbeet, celery etc will produce good plants to harvest and eat. If left after maturity they will eventually go to seed. What we don’t want is the same plants to go to seed before they reach maturity. Some vegetables are very prone to bolting unless the growing conditions are perfect from the time they germinate to the point of maturity. If we are growing our own seedlings for planting out and we nurture the plants from germination to planting out by giving them adequate direct sun light, sufficient moisture for sustained growth and we prick them out without damaging the roots after ‘hardening off’
and provide the young plants with good growing conditions we have great success. If we fall down and the plants get into stress then later on they will likely go to seed. We call this a ‘check’ in their growth. It could have been caused by becoming too dry, too hot, too cold, too soft and insufficient direct sun light. Hardening off is very important; when grown in a glasshouse where everything is controlled the foliage of the seedlings is soft and if shoved straight out into the real world they are likely to die or suffer stress. To overcome this, spray them with Vaporgard to protect the soft foliage and they can then be hardened up quickly. A day before planting out spray the seedlings with Vaporgard over and under foliage. This acts as a stress guard and reduces transplant shock, protects the plants from the elements and reduces moisture loss through foliage. Instead of lying down, your plants will sit up and start growing much quicker in their new situation. If you place Crop Cover over them with hoops you will protect the plants from birds, cats, insects and the elements. They will grow just about twice as fast which means you will be enjoying your own home grown vegetables much sooner. This allows you to re-plant and have more harvests during the growing season.

Re: 3 Waters Will the government listen to the concerns of our councils re the requested feedback to their sweeping 3 Waters reform. After all the discussion, expense, etc that local bodies have been put to, my guess is the government will push right along with their plan, using their majority to quash dissenting voices. The signs from the Beehive don’t appear too friendly. Something is decidedly off. It might not be the water. Not a fair process. I think it should be left as it stands each council looks after their own infrastructure. I too agree that the government has a hidden agenda which allows Maori 50 percent control where are our rights this is dividing our country and causing unrest between our nation, everyone should be equal. No one owns the water, it comes from the sky and it’s for everyone around the world. How Maori think they own it is beyond me. Aboriginal, native American, Indians etc don’t own the water in their countries. What makes Maori think they own our water in New Zealand? New Zealand / Aotearoa, 3 waters, I don’t agree but Maori should be spoken when able. It’s part of who we are. We’re being divided by the greatest race baiters, brow beaten over a flu jab so we forget our body is our right. The media gave up being factual for being first and we are paying. Wake up! Re letters to the editor 3 waters. Are you being serious wasn’t me extracting one of the three waters? It is clearly a race issue when a minister wants to take a hundred percent of the asset and give 50 percent control to 16 percent of the population based on their race. Are you starting to see why normal kiwis don’t agree with this asset grab? As for being yours in the first place, your own story you are immigrants to this country as well. 3 waters, it’s all of ours, should not be owned by anyone, it was there before any of us.
It’s a no brainer All essential workers including truck drivers, bus drivers, cab drivers, should be vaccinated. Protect your families people.

txt talk with The Sun Re: Te Reo Maori
Re: Te Reo Maori
How embarrassing to be of the many European privileged people advertising their casual and not so casual racism expressing their disgust at having Te Reo Maori shoved down their throats. So ironic… perhaps you should look to your ancestors actions. And if you don’t want to learn Te Reo, then don’t. Easy. Other people using it isn’t going to teach you anything! Stop complaining and move on!
I agree with Proud Old New Zealander. I am 78 and if I wanted to learn Maori I would have done so. Is it being taught to young ones at school. If so what lesson are being missed out? It should be up to their parents if they want them to learn it. What a rip off with the water.
Sadly people have missed the point Aotearoa is home to Maori New Zealand is home to all our manuhiri, time you stopped whinging about Te Reo Maori being spoken everywhere you look. This was taken from Maori and now given its rightful place here in Aotearoa. It’s not up to you to say if it’s welcomed or not in your surroundings, time to accept it’s a given, Te Reo Maori is here to stay … time to embrace it or get left behind in the dust. I too am sick and tired of listening to TV news people trying to talk Maori. I agree whole heartily about having this rammed down our throats. If I wanted to learn, which I don’t, I would do something about it. I am also over having New Zealand called Aotearoa. My father and grandfather fought in the war for New Zealand not Aotearoa. Racist Marlborough. Txt talk shows racism rife in Blenheim. To all those complaining that Te Reo is being shoved down your throats. It was literally beaten out of Maori children for a generation, by Pakeha colonialists. All you have to do is turn off your media. You live in Aotearoa New Zealand, acknowledge its full history, not just the bits that allow you to sit comfortably. As a reasonably new resident in Marlborough (7 years) it is disappointing to realise that many fellow residents, perhaps even a neighbour, are so blindfolded by their prejudices they think that because Maori are not a majority of the population their language should not be promoted. I’m so sick and tired of imigrants calling themselves NZers, moaning about Te Reo Maori, if you know our history, we we’re beaten, strapped, had soap shoved down our throats for speaking our true language. You’ve taken everything else of us, don’t like it leave it, don’t degrade it, it’s there for all who want it. Why are we getting Te Reo forced on us. Maori were not here first they were immigrants the same as the rest of us. Moriori were here first but got killed off.
Re: Stand up tall Well done, a lot will agree with all you have said. Whatever is going on in our country, I thought all in New Zealand were all one. But there seems to be a split going on now. Our life is not normal right now with the stress of Covid 19 and now with talks of different changes to New Zealand, it is very upsetting, this is not our New Zealand.
Simply deport! If Brian Tamati is not prepared to accept New Zealand/Aotearoa Laws, why not simply deport him to his ancestral homeland … The Polynesian Island Group?
At any cost! We have been free of the virus, today 130 RSE workers with only one vaccine are to do only 5 days MIQ and one negative test are then split between Marlborough and central Otago, landed in Christchurch. Cindy has been desperately gagging for just one case in our caring populous and here is the answer. A deadly vintage.
REAP House I see REAP house is up for sale. That house is mortgage free, they own it. I hope they’re not going to rent on Russell Terrace.
Be kind, not! Who voted for this government, are you keen to admit it. Shameful apartheid politics. Is that what you call be kind Jacinda.
Shelly Beach Picton Went down to Shelly beach for a picnic to watch the boats on Picton harbour. I found the parking lane and two lane road gone! Replaced by a single lane winding road to the new yacht club facility. What utter stupidity, who approved this. Was this approved by the local community?
txt talk of the week Great hospital staff I have great respect for our staff at Wairau hospital. Such professionals who deliver a high standard of care. Maori language week The people that complain about Maori language week. Half of you people can’t speak English properly so maybe you should start learning the Maori language. I am a 61 year old Pakeha. I love that the Maori language Te Reo is being used more in the media and on the street. I am ashamed that some of the texters are so anti the first people of this nations language. Maori were here first. Their language deserves being recognised and revived. Wales did the same. Colonialism by England did so much damage to Maori and the generational damage is obvious. Enjoy learning a new and also old (older than you) and beautiful language. For the past two weeks we have had language weeks of two peoples of the same population in this country. One we were bombarded with all verbal and other, the next week. I could find and heard nothing of those who had language, culture, tradition, achievement and success for many millennia and should actually be a major parliamentary party by populace. Do you folks also miss the roar of silence? Maori language too much on all channels we never hear about the Moriori language or what happened to them, wrongly slaughtered by who? We are one aren’t we?

Catamaran launched in spray of champagne
A proud moment: Out on the water for the first time on October 3 - WBC’s new boat, MV Ray White.
The beginning of a new era for the Waikawa Boating Club was signalled on Sunday October 3, with the wellaimed swing of a bottle of gold-flecked champagnoise by Waikawa Boating Club patron, Nicky Jenkins. It burst on to the bow of the club’s brand-new catamaran with a satisfying smash and spray of bubbles. MV Ray White was launched! Girvan, the previous club boat which had been gifted by the Holtrop family, had served very well but it had come time to upgrade. With a massive drive from the club to raise funds on top of what the sale of Girvan generated, the new alloy catamaran was launched. Generous grants from Lion Foundation and TAB set an excellent foundation for commissioning the new build through Picton-based Tory Channel Contracting. Every centimetre of Ray White was built locally and much of it through generously donated time and materials. The club website lists all the contributors with sincere thanks. Obituary
Horseman Merv Bryers remembered Marlborough harness racing trainer Merv Bryers is being remembered for his lifetime involvement in the industry. Merv died after a short illness last week. Several drivers at last Thursday’s Addington meeting wore black armbands in memory of Merv. While he did some junior driving in the 1970s, it was his move to America which saw him leave the game again, coming back in the 1990s for a few more drives in New Zealand, including a win on Jolter at Auckland in 1992. A move to Blenheim for retirement in 2016 saw him dabble in harness racing again by helping out fellow trainer Brent Weaver. While Merv had been training for the last four seasons, his career in harness racing spans back to the 1970s. “When I left school I was four foot eight and I went to work with horses in Takanini. Then I started to

grow and I was too big to be a jockey, so I got involved with the trotters and started to work for Monty Kerr,” he told The Sun in July. “I became what they called a probationary driver, which is now a junior driver, and I had quite a few winners in my first year of driving. Then Harness Racing New Zealand gave me an open licence. “I was out on my own then and it was really hard. I raced for about a year or so and then I walked away from it.”
Bryers returned to racing in the 1990s before he took another sabbatical. When he moved to Blenheim a couple of years ago his urge to train returned once more. “My wife (Paulette) and I moved to Blenheim. I saw the trotting track there and decided to get involved in racing again,” he says. “We started off with Monaro Maro two seasons ago, which Maurice Wharton gave to us because she was only a little wee thing. “She went on to perform well for us and now she is going really well in Australia.” Monaro Maro won five races for Merv before she was sold to Australia where she has won a further 13 races, including the Gr.3 Horsham Trotters Cup (2700m), Gr.3 Derby Royale Trotters Free-For-All (2240m), and Gr.2 Matriarch Trot (2240m). Mo n a r o M a ko i s a half-brother to Monaro Maro and is now racing in Australia.
Team Sailing season kicks off with “Have a Go”
Abhaya Keir, Grace Hodges, Kyla Fransen, Kennedy Florence, Addison Florence and Iris Ewart.
Marlborough Secondary Schools Team Sailing will be kicking off the upcoming season with a “Have a Go” session on Sunday, October 17 at 1pm - 4pm weather permitting. This is a great opportunity for aspiring sailors to learn about this exciting sport and get out on the water for a taster session with more experienced crew members and under the watchful eyes of our coach, Kate Overend. Team sailing is an exciting sport where skills, tactics
and working together as a team combine to make success. In New Zealand the best opportunity to learn and develop skills is to join the secondary school teams at MBC, MGC and Queen Charlotte College. We want to encourage young people who are in secondary school already or transitioning to year 9 in 2022 to come along and see what this is all about. Team sailing offers you the opportunity to join the sport early in secondary school
and continue to develop skills, learn leadership and decision making over the years. You make great friendships and learn lots of skills with the support of seasoned sailors and supporters. The “Have a Go” session will be held at Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, Shelley Beach Picton and more information is available on the QCYC website with contact details for the team managers.

Women’s rugby hurt by Black Fern-less final The New Zealand Rugby Union did the womens game no favours by not allowing the Black Ferns to play in the showpiece of the sport in the country. Canterbury had six players missing for the decider while eventual winners, Waikato were without nine Black Ferns. The Black Ferns head for a tour of Europe next week and therefore were held out of the game.
New Zealand’s best female player, Kendra Cocksedge was reduced to running the kicking tee on and off for the game at Christchurch’s Rugby Park. Essentially you had Canterbury B versus Waikato B and it showed on the field. Yes, the final had excellent defence and the 22-20 finish suggested a close game but the skill level was not up to the surging
standards of the women’s game in this country. If efforts are still being made to convert people into watching the game, and I’m sure it is, few new eyeballs would have been thrilled with what they watched. That does not mean there was not a star or two that impressed. Canterbury flanker Jorja Miller was phenomenal. Long touted as a gifted player
on the rise when I used to work at the Timaru Herald as a sports reporter, South Canterbury’s Jorja was the best on ground by a country mile. Yes, you can blame Covid-19 for disrupting the domestic rugby schedule but the Farah Palmer Cup final deserved more respect than what it got on Saturday. If the NZRU wants the rugby public to take the women’s game

Years fly by for croquet veteran By Glenise Dreaver
“How long have I been playing croquet? Since I was a kid,” says 90-year-old John Best of Blenheim. Further questioning reveals that he began with the Brooklyn Croquet Club in Whitehead Park 12 years ago, when he was only 78. His wife Mary, now 86, began at the same time and John says their only regret is that they didn’t start thirty or so years ago. He says the game is a blend of golf and billiards, with many of the best features of both games. “And it can truly be played on level terms, whether you are nineteen or ninety.” He’s all geared up for the Croquet Marlborough Veterans’ Tournament on October 16. It is being held at the Brooklyn Croquet Club in Brooklyn Drive, and includes Double and Singles play over two days. The South Island Masters’ Games will follow immediately.“I hear there’s going to be another old codger coming up for that,” John says cheerfully and he’ll be look-

ing to better the bronze he and club spokesperson Roz Bridges won two years ago at the South Island Masters Games held in Timaru. “It’s huge,” says Roz, who adds that there will be thousands of visitors to the town with croquet just one of the 36 different sports to be played, Covid permitting. John is elated that their fine greens will be used to their maximum, with 48 people playing a singles competition at once. “We have six greens and you can play ‘second colour’, with two two-member teams at the same time on each green, using different colour balls.” Singles play will be followed by doubles play and involves 80 players. Blenheim Croquet Club is also hosting games at their club, too. Roz says the public will be welcome at both tournaments and entry is free, with John adding that they will be resuming normal club days after the games are over and anyone interested can be guided through a game or two. “This croquet virus is very easy to catch!” he says. “And this one is Ninety-year-old John Best, getting in a bit of practice for two upcoman enjoyable one.” ing South Island tournaments at the Brooklyn Croquet Club green.

with the same seriousness as the men’s game in the coming years then outcomes like this need to be avoided in the future. I’m sure the 15 Black Ferns would have rather played than sat on the sidelines. Finals must be against the best players, that’s the whole point, New Zealand Rugby dropped the ball and the game suffered as a result.
Monday, October 18, 5.45pm - Track Cycling at Athletic Park. Mixture of events for all grades. Newcomers ideally aged 11-12 years up. Track Bikes available. Come and give it a go. Coaching provided. All welcome. For further info contact Warren 021663910 or Graham 0278212379.
Harriers support Games Blenheim Harriers spokesperson Les McKay says that, in association with the organisers of the South Island Masters Games, they have taken on the role of organising the 5km run, 5km walk and 10km run. The course is on the Taylor River reserve, starting on the riverbank beside the Pod by Clubs of Marlborough. It then goes out to the Monro Street walk bridge and back. The out and in is measured 5km, and the 10km runners do it twice. Entries are still open so you can go to www.simasters.com using code grey to get a discount registering yourself into the Games. You then register for your event. “We set the course and intend to review it this Saturday, October 9, 2021 8.30am. Come and join us to test the course,” says Les. “Let’s see as many of you supporting the SI Masters Games on Friday, October 15, 6pm start. We need you to be at the registration desk by 5.30pm.”
