Every year for the last 11 years, the residents of Wairau Valley have run a special competition that always brings a touch of Christmas cheer to the area. Their decorated post box com-

petition is eagerly contested, and the sponsored basket of Christmas goodies awarded to the winner probably counts for less than the honour and glory – and sheer fun in each household taking part. Continued on page 4.

No lights for this Grinch thank you very much! The Watson’s Wairau Valley letter box is very much a family affair with mum designing, dad building - and pictured, Kate who did the painting, also exercising a little bit of creative censorship on the design.

Support local this Christmas Mayor John Leggett says when purchasing something special for friends and family this year, supporting local should be at the top of our list. “Many local businesses have had a tough year. He says: “As well as suffering the effects of Covid-19, those in the retail, hospitality and tourism sectors have battled following the July storm and the October CBD flood. “By supporting local we are helping reinvest in our community. “Aside from the traditional gifts of books, clothes or jewellery, a voucher for lunch at one of our wonderful wineries, restaurants or cafés, or a voucher to experience one of the many attractions in Marlborough’s brilliant backyard would go down a treat,” he said. While roading repair work in the Marlborough Sounds and the Awatere Valley is continuing, crews have now also begun work in other local areas. Summer is the sealing season, and resealing work began last week. It will run until the end of March when the ground temperature is at its optimum for a good finish. Marlborough Roads’ manager Steve Murrin says over the next few months it may feel as if there are roadworks everywhere. “The warmer months are the only time sealing work can be carried out. The warm temperatures and dry air help the new seal stick to the road surface, and allow the chip to bed in, which is why you see road repair teams at this time of year.”

Spirit of Christmas in roadside art Continued from page 1. Angela Woolf, one of the co-ordinators, says the boxes have sprouted all over, “up and down the valley”. With the competition closing date now extended from December 17 to 19, she isn’t being drawn on likely winners at this stage. But it’s perhaps a demonstration of the spirit of competitiveness that she says three-time winner Glenys Parson always leaves her entry until quite late and at the time of going to print, it hadn’t yet been sighted.

Beau Beattie, with the help of big brother Ben, has found the ideal place to keep a weather eye out for Santa's arrival in the Wairau Valley.

“65 and still able to climb a tree” KORU NUTRITION To be out in one’s garden is, as I am sure any keen gardener will agree, so life-giving. Fresh air, the different shades and colours that nature provides, not to mention the produce that a garden can provide renews and refreshes. This is definitely the case for Cherry. “There is nothing I love more than getting some dirt under my fingernails. Despite my years, I am still young. I think it is impressive to be 65 and still able to climb up a tree to give it a trim.” “As you start to get on, I think it does require you to start to look for things that will give you a little bit more support. I love to eat the produce off my land but if it’s been a hard day outside or I just sit at my computer for too long in the evening, I find I can get pretty knackered. I love to rub Koru FX into my joints and muscles just to relax. “It is a family thing. My sister got my brother and I onto the product. Local actor and journalist Chris Valli is part of the barricade and ensemble for Blenheim Musical Theatre’s production of Les Misérables in May 2022.

Finance oPTions aVaiLabLe

Chris is writing a weekly column for The Blenheim Sun newspaper about the rehearsal process, the backstory and context of Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel and insights into the theatrical phenomenon. Without giving too much away, sometimes in theatre less is more (sounds familiar?) In a 2014 Broadway adaptation of Les Misérables Gavroche climbs to the top of the barricade, there is the sound of a single shot, a bright light, a frozen moment, and then he falls. That’s it. A comrade then lifts his fallen body. And It works. Less is more indeed. The organic process of developing characterisation on an audience leaves those who watch theatre to reflect or question their own values or morals. One of the selling points in any quality production is the balance between light and sound and how special effects come to fruition to convey the beginning or climax in a scene. What makes the 2022 Les Misérables version appealing is a cast full of familiar Marlborough faces shown in a new light, and talent new to Blenheim that will illustrate the quality here. Lighting head of department Josh Wright says the rehearsal process is vital to allow the lighting team to know the show inside and out. Josh says there will be a team of four lighting operators for the follow spots with one operator running the lighting desk. “We can change the colour of a light with coloured gel and we can change the colour

instantly with LED lights.” Production Manager Mike Wentworth says from a sound perspective all 64 of the cast will be mic’d up which will require additional sound desks to be brought into the theatre Mike adds this will create a super-rich sound unheard in the theatre previously. Sound will require a stealth team in the wings making adjustments and HOD Chris Holdaway operating the desk. The cast voices will be supplemented by sound effects for the battle scenes, the sewers giving an immersive “live “ and authentic experience. Mike says the sound quality and emphasis will be exclusively on the quality of the cast voices – hence the requirement for a super fit cast and nine months of rehearsal. There will be nowhere to hide! With 10 sleeps until Santa arrives, the repetition of the score has worked its way past one’s cerebral cortex and drilled itself into one’s brain stem. Some 65 million people in 42 countries have seen a stage production of Les Miserables. It’s now Waiharakekes turn, again. Les Misérables will be performed at the ASB Theatre from Wednesday, May 18 May 28, 2022. Tickets can be purchased at the ASB Theatre.

Fundraising journal hitting the streets By Glenise Dreaver

Isabel Gaines, a Year 9 student at Marlborough Girls’ College, says she started journalling as a way to keep organised, “to help myself to stay focussed in class”. The end result is the launch of a hard copy of a 138-page tracker journal to assist others with the same problem, to help them prioritise, decide what needs done today and what can be done tomorrow, for example. The $18 per journal is also allowing her to raise $2 from every copy for the Graeme Dingle Foundation. That’s even though she needs to sell the first 100 copies of her initial 200-copy print run to draw even.

“I’m learning a lot about business!” she says, adding that she has already pre-sold 50 copies within the last week or so. Isabel’s chosen the foundation because she has had personal experience of the benefits it can bring. “I’ve been involved with their Star camp and some whanau class activities.” And she also wants to share her learning about journalling with others. “I found it keeps me calm, stops my mind from going 100 miles an hour, trying to think about what has to be done next,” she says. Her journal also creates a visual way of keeping organised, doing the tasks she needs to do, allowing for daily check-ins, mapping

moods, highlighting habits she needs to develop, and provides scope for activities like colouring in. Pulling it all together was a challenge, so she asked a graphic designer that she knew, Liz Valk of Valk Design in Blenheim, to help her. The two worked together, and Isabel asked friends’ opinions on the pages and they also made some alterations to their original cover design. “I changed it so that it had more grey and green, so that it is more subtle. Calm and clean to match the aesthetic of my book.” “She says she’s “a little bit nervous”. “It’s a bit stressful. But it’s also

exciting!” To find out more, or to buy a copy of Isabel’s journal you can go to 2022tracker@gmail. com, or message her at 022 0643 560. Year 9 student Isabel Gaines of Blenheim has begun selling her tracker journal, both to raise funds for the Graeme Dingle Foundation and to provide varied and creative strategies to help other students better focus and prioritise.

Power trust to hold annual reporting meeting People considering standing for the Marlborough Electric Power Trust in the elections in February next year should attend tomorrow’s annual reporting meeting, Trust chair Nicki Stretch says. The trustees own 100 per cent of Marlborough Lines Limited on behalf of the trust’s beneficiaries, the electricity consumers of Marlbor-

ough. Elections are held every two years, with three of the six trustee positions up for consideration. This year, there will be four positions under consideration, as one trustee was appointed during the term when an elected trustee resigned. That appointment needs to be re-elected by electricity consumers as well.

Nicki Stretch says the role of trustee is an important one with significant duties. Nominations are now open for people to put themselves forward as trustees for election, and she encouraged people interested in standing for the trust to attend this year’s annual reporting meeting where trustees, Marlborough Lines

chief executive Tim Cosgrove, and Yealands Wine Group’s chief executive Tiffani Graydon will report on the trust’s and companies’ performances during the past financial year to 30 June 2021. The trust’s annual reporting meeting is on Thursday, December 16 2021, from 7pm in the Whitehaven Room at the ASB Civic

Theatre in Hutcheson Street. The facility requires patrons to show a vaccine pass on entry. Anyone can attend the meeting, but only beneficiaries of the trust can vote. A beneficiary of the trust is anyone with an active power connection in Marlborough and who pays the electricity bill for that connection.

He korero no te Kaunihera o Wairau NEWS FROM THE MARLBOROUGH DISTRICT COUNCIL

Have your say on the Draft Responsible Camping Control Bylaw 2022 Consultation on the Council’s Draft Responsible Camping Control Bylaw 2022 is underway and now’s the time to have your say. Council’s decision to review the 2020 bylaw comes as a result of concerns raised by the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA). Mayor John Leggett said the Council received a ‘statement of claim for judicial review’ from the NZMCA in relation to the bylaw at the end of May 2021. The two key points of the NZMCA claim are that: 1) Submitters were not given the chance to make submissions on the restriction of freedom camping to five sites in the district 2) Further, the Council did not undertake a complete assessment of all areas in the district (other than for the five sites) against the criteria in the Freedom Camping Act “While the Council does not accept these claims, we are undertaking further consultation on the bylaw

to address these points and to address other matters that have arisen since the bylaw came into effect,” Mayor Leggett said. “Importantly this allows the Council to review the effect of the bylaw during the most recent camping season, last summer, which was the first managed under the 2020 bylaw, he said. “We know freedom camping is a challenging issue in Marlborough and New Zealand. Now is the time for the community to read over the Draft Marlborough District Council Responsible Camping Bylaw 2022, and the accompanying documentation and make submissions regarding the proposed changes, or identify any other issues relating to freedom camping in our region.” “The consultation period runs until 17 January 2022. We will then undertake robust analysis of the submissions and aim to hold public hearings during the first quarter of next year,” Mayor Leggett said.

My Vaccine Pass requirement varies in Marlborough At this time Marlborough District Council does not intend to introduce My Vaccine Pass at Council premises such as libraries, customer service counters, parks, reserves and sports fields. However, some other organisations with public facilities do require their users to show a My Vaccine Pass. Under the Red and Orange alert levels, Council facilities are open with capacity limits based on one metre physical distancing. Face coverings are mandatory and people are required to scan in using the Covid tracer app or sign in. The Council’s preference is to ensure it can minimise the risks associated with Covid-19 transmission

Marlborough Sounds’ residents had an opportunity to meet face-to-face with representatives from the Council and Marlborough Roads Recovery Team last week. Around 70 people attended two community meetings held at the Waitaria Bay Settlers Hall and The Portage. Mayor John Leggett told attendees he knew it had been a frustrating time for everyone. “At times progress appeared to be slow, particularly getting work underway on the Kenepuru Road and side roads. But there were good operational and safety reasons for this. I want to thank you for your patience as the repair work continues,” he said. The roading recovery team outlined its focus on fixing the road as quickly as possible, with people’s safety first and foremost, and to support the community until uncontrolled access is restored. Recovery team members also confirmed their commitment to the community to work through the issues raised. They will continue to advocate for the Sounds to central government, improve communications, provide subsidised transport and notice about the work programme and access

Mayor John Leggett thanks the community at Waitaria Bay Settlers Hall changes so residents can plan. The key milestone of enabling ‘controlled access’ via a pass system to the full length of Kenepuru Road and side roads has now been reached. With the summer holiday season fast approaching, people are reminded a ‘resident’ or ‘essential service pass’ is required to drive through parts of Kenepuru Road that are classified as Controlled Access. Email Marlborough Roads at recovery@marlboroughroads.com before Monday 20 December 2021 to obtain a pass. This access does not include visitors who are hiring or renting a holiday

home or bach. Visitors must not drive vehicles into the Controlled Access areas in any of the recovery zones. Residents with passes can pick their visitors up from public access points and transport them to their property. Lodge operators can use the road under the resident access permitted system, to collect and transport guests to holiday accommodation. Tourist operators can apply for an access permit but will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Holiday accommodation guests can water taxi in or get a shuttle service from a wharf to their accommodation.

Handy tips to manage Christmas recycling There’s lots to recycle at this time of the year but please don’t overload the crate, especially if there’s a breeze. If it’s windy, place your black refuse bag on top of the crate to provide extra weight to hold down any loose items. Your crate should not be overflowing and any extra should not be left on the pavement - our collection trucks can only pick up the contents of one crate per household. While Christmas wrapping paper can be recycled, shiny foil wrapping paper cannot - it has a plastic content that is not suitable for recycling so please don’t include it in your crate.

This year there will be no alternative collection days for rubbish and recycling services. If your rubbish and recycling crate is usually collected on a Monday or Tuesday this service will continue on these days despite the statutory holidays. So please remember to put your rubbish and recycling crate out on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December and Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 January, if these are your usual collection days. For more information about rubbish collections and transfer station opening hours go to: www. marlborough.govt.nz/services/recycling-andresource-recovery

Good samaritan Dear Ed I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to a very kind lady who’s name I do not know. I am approaching 80. I work at the Saturday Market, railway station carpark. This lady approached me and handed me $5 without wanting

Spirit of Bathurst lives Dear Ed Having watched the Bathurst 1000, a car race in which Kiwi drivers have a good record, I would like to reassure all you Supercar supporters out there this trend will continue. I have personally witnessed the next crop of drivers using Cleghorn Street for their

practice runs and Moana Crescent for their pit stops. It’s a sight to behold. And as for all those pedestrians who do need to cross over Cleghorn Street, the best day would be a Sunday, which is a non-practice day. Best of Luck. Mr Moss (Name and address supplied)

Dear Ed Yes, there is a great walking or fun cycle track between Picton and Waikawa, but I am talking about cycling for transport. The track is not good for cyclists carrying groceries on their bike - transporting children, or the scooters going to school. Also skateboarders are also using the side of the road for transport.

The Council has considered a proper cycleway but have abandoned it in favour of car parking. The car parking is getting worse and worse and is also being used by commercial camper vans, as somewhere to keep them. This is causing lack of visibility for cars coming out of a side road, to see what is coming. Mobility scooters too, have difficulty negotiating the ups and

downs of the footpaths. If there is “no money” then how about just going as far as Queen Charlotte College. One side of the road can be for pedestrians and car parking, and the other for cycling, mobility scooters, electric and push scooters, skateboards etc. People are getting very innovative about transport and this should be encouraged.

The more this can happen, the less car parking is needed in Picton. This needs Council to start thinking outside of the square, and embrace the idea of alternatives to cars. There is so much width in Waikawa Road - with a wide footpath and the side of the road. Rosemary Jorgensen

Dear Ed Very much enjoying Neville Higgison’s absolutely excellent book, “Ruff Justice”. As a cop, dog handler, in Britain way back in the 50s and early 60s I could see the very early way that things would go as Neville says, so I went tunnelling in Victoria as a less frustrating career! Things have got infinitely worse in the 21st century justice wise. The scumbag element has been taught not to fear anything in the way of actual punishment for deeply antisocial acts. A crazy softness towards them is now the fashion. I was shocked beyond words to read in the Dunedin news-

God’s sense of humour revealed It is a winding path that has brought Deo Vistar to his ministry at St Christopher’s, Blenheim. He talks to Sun journalist Glenise Dreaver about his journey. When Deo Vistar, the newly-appointed minister of St Christopher’s in Blenheim, first arrived in New Zealand, he soon realised that God really did have a sense of humour. He’d gone to Dunedin to do his PhD at the University of Otago and Deo admits that wasn’t his first choice. The prestigious Edinburgh University had accepted him, and approved his topic “The Signs of Jesus in the Gospel of St John”. “I was very excited. Then I found out the cost. Overseas students coming in to the UK have to pay three times the amount that domestic students do. “No way could I do that,” said Deo, born in the Philippines. He was coming to that degree after five years of study for his two masters degrees, and also ministry work, in South Korea. So he and his Chinese-born wife Guan, who was now expecting their first child, prayed about their next move and explored their options. In the University of Otago, he says he found a wide-open door in front of him, with the supervisor very happy with his topic. And in New Zealand, the reverse applies to costs of doctoral studies. While international students pay dearly for their under-graduate degrees, as they progress through the system the universities charge less rather than more. So began what Deo describes as a very exciting time. “We arrived in Dunedin in June 2014, the middle of winter. That was very memorable.” And Pine Hill, where they lived, is not famous for its temperate climate at the best of times. But with warm clothes, and the release from the very stressful “pressure cooker” of life in South Korea, they soon found they loved New Zealand. And in a very short time, Deo found

out about God’s sense of humour. “I’d come with no idea that Dunedin is known as the Edinburgh of the South. (The city’s name comes from the Gaelic words for Edinburgh, Dùn Èideann.) Given Deo’s huge disappointment at not being able to study in Scotland, he says the discovery was very comforting. He and Guan quickly grew to love the work/life/play/fun balance of life in this country. “It’s so beautiful. There’s a lot of sheep – but it’s not crowded like China for example.” Deo’s doctorate finished, he had to think about whether he’d choose to be an academic, or go to church ministry. He chose the latter because, he says, an academic career is very demanding. The couple looked online and found the vacancy at the Picton Baptist Church, where they went in 2017.

Everyone has, he says, been “so, so welcoming.” Now the appointment to St Christopher’s Anglican Church means a change of denomination. “It’s an exciting new journey,” says Deo. “There’s so much to learn.” Everyone has, he says, been “so, so welcoming.” They’re already well settled in - Guan has a position working with local vineyard workers, their daughter is at Richmond View School and their son attends a kindergarten near the church. Already their presence has attracted more international members to the congregation and Deo is providing a ministry to RSE workers, who come to Sunday services as well as having a

weekly Bible study group with a supper and prayers together. There is a Mandarin-speaking Bible study group every Wednesday which Guan leads. “That’s going very well.” There is also a Mandarin-speaking service once

a month. “Last month we had 45 people,” he says, adding that they provide a simultaneous translation so that Kiwis who attend can understand. Deo is delighted that with more families joining, they have been

able to restart Sunday school, which had lapsed some years ago due to lack of both children and leaders. “We are journeying together as a church family. What more could I ask?” says Deo.

Helping each other through COVID-19 With more cases of COVID-19 in the community, it’s possible you and your whānau will be exposed to the virus. To make sure you’re ready, have a plan in case you or someone in your house tests positive and needs to isolate. Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19, and those who live with them, will need to isolate for at least 10 days to stop the spread of the virus. If someone else in your house tests positive for COVID-19, they’ll be advised how much longer they need to isolate. Make a plan

Support while isolating

If you’re travelling and away from home, know how you will get home or self isolate where you are.

It’s normal to feel anxious about isolating with COVID-19.

While isolating, you will need to have all of your food and necessities delivered. You cannot go to work, school, church or any community or private events or gatherings. No one outside of the people you live with can visit or enter the home. Most fully-vaccinated people with COVID-19 are likely to have a mild to moderate illness and will fully recover at home.

Who can help out Be prepared in case you’re exposed to COVID-19. Speak with a neighbour, friend, or whānau about the support you could need. For instance, dropping off food and supplies, and help with activities outside the house. Being ready is about people, conversations, connections and knowing what to do, so your whānau and community can help each other when needed.

You’ll have a support person who will contact you often to check that you and your whānau are safe and supported – even if you’re travelling and away from home. You will also get a telephone number for 24-hour health support. If you need more help or support to manage at home, you can access a COVID-19 welfare line.

What you’ll need To help you get through, you will need to have food, medications and supplies available to you. Find a detailed checklist to help you prepare at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare

Check what support is available for self-isolating at home and find more preparation tips at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare

evidence of the enduring support for the iconic event, says Beth. “That gives us confidence that when we hold the next festival, its fans will be ready to come together and celebrate our place, people and wines.” The board did not feel a postponement date was viable in such changeable times, so all tickets for the 2022 event will be 100 percent refunded. Those who have booked to come to Marlborough in February will still find an array of cellar doors and smaller summer celebrations, “to help build lifelong memories of Marlborough,” says Beth. Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens says the organisers appreciate the support offered by the Government, in terms of funding assistance and underwriting the event. “But what cannot be secured is the viability of our industry at the most critical time of year – when the year’s wine is made,” he says. “We are absolutely committed to the Marlborough Wine & Food Festival. But our greater commitment is to the safety of our industry and our community.”

The Marlborough Wine & Food Festival will not run in February 2022, due to the risks Covid-19 poses the wine industry and wider Marlborough community, says Marlborough Winegrowers Association board chair Beth Forrest. “The festival has always been a wonderful way to prepare for the harvest, in a last big hoorah before the industry gets to the vital business of picking grapes and making wine, in the exciting and exhausting buzz of vintage,” says Beth. “But hosting thousands of people on a single site could put our wine industry and community at risk.” Marlborough’s harvest runs from February right through to late April, and in making this difficult decision the board took into account the vulnerability of the industry to Covid-19 at harvest, “especially given the shortage of staff and scarcity of experience in wineries, due to border restrictions,” says Beth. Despite the uncertainty of events during Covid-19, ticket sales for the 2022 event were on par with previous years, which is

MDC clarifies stance on vaccine passes Marlborough District Council has announced it does not intend to introduce My Vaccine Pass at council premises such as libraries, customer service counters, waste management services or in public places such as parks, reserves and sports fields. Under the Red and Orange alert levels, council facilities are open with capacity limits based on one metre physical distancing. Face coverings are mandatory and people are required to scan in using the Covid tracer app or sign in. The council’s preference is to ensure it can minimise the risks as-

sociated with Covid-19 transmission whilst allowing as many council services as possible to be open to the public. Many council services and transactions can be carried out online and do not require a physical visit to a building. For more information go to www.marlborough. govt.nz or phone 03 520 7400. However, events run by the council or held on council premises which have, or are likely to have, more than 50 people would not be permitted at Red, and require a My Vaccine Pass at the current Orange level. At Green, and with the presentation

of a My Vaccine Pass, there are no capacity limits for events or gatherings. Some council-owned facilities and venues in Marlborough run by other organisations set their own rules. Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 pool and gymnasium requires its users show a My Vaccine Pass on entry, as does the ASB Theatre, the Marlborough Events Centre and the Clubs of Marlborough. Each sporting code in Marlborough sets its own rules of participation under Ministry of Health guidance. Contact the sporting code or go to https://sportnz.org.nz/ for general guidance.

Flower ladies spread Christmas cheer By Glenise Dreaver

For years, Yvonne Rigby of Picton was one of the town’s loyal flower ladies preparing corsages for cruise ship passengers as the ships docked. For the last two years Covid, and the demise of the cruise ship market, has meant that she and the other women in the group have seen their role in welcoming tourists reduced to nothing. She was aware however, that fellow group member Ivette Cameron had boxes of already-prepared artificial flower corsages under her bed. It seemed a shame to waste them and the idea of using them in another way came to mind. “I thought ‘What about the people in rest homes? Why don’t we give them each a corsage for Christmas?”

After all, she pointed out, the current precautions mean that some of them, especially those whose families are elsewhere, will have no one with them on Christmas Day. “It’s just sad.” So she approached Ivette and fellow group member Margaret Frisken and after a bit of discussion, they decided the idea was a “goer”. The result has been that the three friends have delivered hundreds of colourful Christmas-themed corsages to rest homes in Blenheim and Picton, ready to be distributed by staff on Christmas morning. On Monday December 10, in one of their last deliveries, they presented a box of 30 to the management at Seaview Rest Home in Picton, meaning that residents will have a Christmas-themed gift on Christmas Day – and the pile of boxes under Ivette’s bed has reduced considerably.

GP reclaims active lifestyle By Glenise Dreaver

With the unexpected acquisition of a custom-designed and specially-adapted mobility bicycle, Blenheim GP Ros Gellatly now finds herself able to reclaim an active lifestyle. She says she believes her mobility issues arise from the late after-effects of a car accident years ago. So it was serendipity that a friend, Grant Johnston, who knew how much Ros was missing her cycling, also knows Russell Gent, a retired farmer and keen cyclist. Grant had already seen a recumbent bike that Russell had, originally designed and made, in hopes it might suit his wife’s elderly friend and wondered if

it could work for Ros. “I’d also made a couple for myself,” Russell says. He’s been fixing old bikes at the MenzShed for years, ever since he retired to Blenheim when, he says: “I didn’t know what I was going to do.” That only lasted about a month until he saw the MenzShed ad. He quickly fell into the role of repairing and creating safe bikes from old ones that are often donated, and from the unclaimed bikes the Police bring in every three months. “I decided to have a play around,” he says, adding that he needed to sort out the seat height, and the length to the pedals of his three-wheeled recumbent bike, which sees the

rider seated low to the ground. He also needed the bike to have an electric pedal assist mode with battery and motor. For Ros, who has been a recreational rider, and who can now plan some fun trips with friends, he got a battery that can take her 80-90km if required. “That cost $1200,” said Russell, adding that most of the other components had cost little or nothing. The bike’s seat, for example, is from a discarded office chair. However, for technical reasons, Russell said he needed specific and non-standard wheel sizes, which meant he had to cut down spokes to fit. Russell’s very aware that this bike is really just a pro-

totype, with reversing and going downhill, as a serious mountain biker might want to do, not being options with this model. Ros, however, can’t speak highly enough of it. “It’s amazing. Just amazing,” she says, adding with some fondness: “It’s my Heath Robinson bike.” Once she retires, in the nottoo distant future, she can look forward to doing some bike trails with friends. “My partner is planning to get a trailer and make a suitable frame to hold the trike and other bikes. Russell and the MenzShed crew may well be asked to help with that,” Russell Gent, with Ros Gellatly and the cusshe says. tom-adapted recumbent bike he built for her needs.

Pay rise

Remembrance service A big thank you to the caring staff at Sowman’s. A reflective time and lighting of candles for loved ones passed was held last Wednesday evening. I for one left feeling at peace. Double Shot chose very fitting songs to play and sing, ending with Silent Night that we could sing along to. Which we did, it was beautiful. To everyone involved making this special service happen, bless you all, including the attendees.

Would be good to know Does the Marlborough farmers market expect their stall holders to be double vaccinated?

Doesn’t make sense Vaccine passport is almost complete control of people. Lacks logic on flu transmission. Wear mask to order coffee then take if off to drink and eat. Government is playing fear card with sheep like people.

The time is now, the increase is incredible, watch for the very last uncontested motion in parliament this year. The annual MP rise legislation and this year it’s totally disgusting. Doubt me, then listen in folks.

What’s up with Blenheim postal services? Recently two envelopes correctly addressed to Seddon took ten days and two weeks to arrive. One was a lawyers’ letter which left no time to action a reply.

Queen Street Health Hub Having attended a number of medical appointments at this venue over recent months, I do as required diligently enter masked up correctly, Covid trace, sanitise and social distance. However appallingly I see staff wandering around reception who don’t mask up or only casually do so, long after entering building and socialise closely on personal matters with other staff. Why do you have a casual, entitled attitude and lack respect for in house clients? Whom needs to keep whom safe from Covid here? Management check your CTV cameras and discipline your staff, law breakers. By comparison thank you supermarket staff who do respectfully keep us safe.

Battys Road roundabout

Independence So this government is dishing out millions of dollars to support NZ media. How independent does this make the media? Not very in my opinion.

Keep them safe If you like gardening keep a watch on your garden tools, hoses, plants, garden lights etc because someone has stolen my garden hose.

Take it with you I walk the Taylor River path almost every day and I’m fed up with having to avoid dog poo! Also sick of seeing dog poo in bags thrown under bushes. Pick up your dog poo and people shouldn’t be running with their dogs if they can’t see what they are up to behind them. I never see anyone running with a dog poo bag.

Couriers buzzing everywhere. Must be Xmas. Or online shopping? Support our local shops if you can, they need it.

Sun paper I rang the Sun as my paper was late and was missing it. Best thing to come out of the South Island I reckon.

What’s next to go?

Congratulations to onsite staff and management for the new Renwick Road intersection. Well done to all. Worth waiting for.

Re: Covid 19 You do know they are now doing booster shots in the UK every three months now?

All entitled to have a say What happened to freedom of speech? We are all entitled to have our opinions heard. Who agrees? If you don’t print this txt in your Wed newspaper you may be seen as being racist against non-maori NZers. Come on, we’re all entitled to have a say.

Blenheim has lost so many events this year. I see now we have lost the Wine and Food Festival, that was to go ahead in Renwick. So sad. Makes me wonder whether we will now lose the market day in town that’s always on par with the festival? Hope not.

Kind deed I was wanting to buy a new pair of shoes but didn’t have money on me to pay at The Warehouse and they couldn’t hold them for me. To the kind lovely lady who paid for them thank you so much. Merry Christmas and happy new year.

Thank you ladies Last Thursday I was pulling the hose off the reel walking backwards, I tripped and fell backwards into the road in Bary Street. A car came around the corner, no stop or slow down. Two ladies out walking came to my aid and got me inside. I would like to say a big thank you to those ladies. I am OK just have deep bruising.

Wine festival Now that it has already been advertised in magazines as on, makes one wonder how many out of town folks will turn up for it, not realising its now no more. Just like the year some ladies that called themselves the pink ladies turned up in Blenheim for the market in town only to find nothing on at all because of certain shop owners against it.

txt talk of the week Merry Christmas! How cool was it to see Santa on the back of the truck going around the neighbourhood with the rural fire. Absolute joy for the young and old. Thank you. Marlborough Roads Does anybody who works for Marlborough Roads drive on the Marlborough Roads? If they did perhaps the roads wouldn’t be in the state they are in. Francis Street (second rate repairs), Colemans Road end of Fulton Street, like driving over corrugated iron and then there’s Waihopai Valley Road at the top. To quote one kid who said “they come out here with their buckets of tar and fill the holes and that lasts until the next truck runs over the patch and then we’re back to a hole. ”What do they actually do?

Public toilets Public toilets being closed due to lockdowns. People who don’t live in Blenheim come in to shop, of course nature calls. Children suddenly have to go. Where are we supposed to go? Nature is nature. Such a disappointment in Blenheim. What is the solution?

Re: Medical centre I agree I had to wait three weeks for a phone consult.

Thank you pharmacies Re: Masks Agree with contributor. There is no reason why people who are exempt could not wear a face shield.

Covid certificates can be printed out at most pharmacies.

What to plant: By Wally Richards I was asked the question this week about what we should be planting vegetable wise at this time of the year. A lot depends on how much room you have and how keen you are on growing your own vegetables. If you are fortunate and have a good size section such as quarter an acre then you can be fairly self sufficient in fresh produce. If you have only a little land around your home then you have to be innovative with your limitations. There are some nice planters you can purchase such as on Trade Tested 150 litre and 112 litre made from durable plastic at reasonable prices. These can be sat on concrete or at the edge of the lawn or where a garden used to be. Place weedmat under them where ever you choose to put them. I have several of these which arrived in a flat pack and were easy to assemble. Filled two thirds full with compost (I prefer Daltons Compost) and then I spread the likes of chicken manure (or any animal manures). Blood & Bone along with Wallys Calcium & Health, Wallys BioPhos, Wallys Unlocking your Soil and Wallys Ocean Solids mean your vegetables will have all the nutrients, minerals and trace element that they would like. That means the produce will be super healthy, have marvellous flavour and be so good for your immune system. Over the top of the goodies you put a further layer of compost about 4cm thick. It is into this layer that you can plant seeds or seedlings. With the longest day of the year next week we have optimum hours of daylight for growing. You should have salad crops currently growing and harvesting as they mature such as lettuce, radish, spinach, silverbeet, spring onions etc. The key here is to have small plantings every 2-3 weeks so you will have succession crops for harvesting. For instance you might plant 4-6 lettuce plants now and in about 3-4 weeks another 4-6. When the first lot are being harvested you plant the third lot and

that will take you well into winter before you find that the low day light hours take much longer to mature the plants. You can progressively harvest the larger outside leaves and let the plant grow more leaves. Silver beet is a great one for this type of harvesting. Now here is a little secret that you can use when you buy a punnet or cell pack that has many seedlings, much more than you want to plant at one time. Before you try to separate them put the punnet into a bucket of water and after it has finished bubbling remove all the seedlings from the plastic. Now working underwater you can separate off the number of plants you wish to plant. Only take the bigger more developed plants and plant them. You are left with one or more clumps of seedlings so rather than throw them away plant into the soil as a clump. Because they are over crowded they will hold and not grow much. In two weeks time you can lift the clump and under water separate those you wish to plant. This can be repeated a few times before the seedlings become too stressed and not worth planting. December is also the first month to plant your winter crops of brassicas. The six packs that have two cabbage, two cauliflowers and two broccoli are ideal for succession planting so about every two weeks you plant another lot. The last month for planting these winter crops would be end of March. If you have ample land and grow potatoes for Christmas or storage then likely the early crops will have been harvested or ready to harvest soon. It pays to either bandicoot a few potatoes out from under the plants to determine size and health. If you don’t feel any good size tubers under the plants then lift one or two and if only small marble size potatoes are found and they are re-shooting then you have had attacks from the potato psyllids. If the tubers are of good size then cut one in half to inspect the inside for dark rings; if found then the crop

is ruined from psyllid attacks. If neither of these problems exist then harvest your crop as soon as possible so you do not lose good potatoes to late attacks. If you do not want to lift then cut the tops off and cover the stubble so the psyllids have nothing to destroy. My thoughts are lift crop and use that ground after applying more goodies for planting up winter crops. Root crops such as carrots, parsnips, onions and beetroot can be planted by sowing seeds into loose fertile soil. Sprinkle the seeds into a furrow or broadcast over a square metre, spray the seeds with Magic Botanic Liquid before covering to speed up germination. Keep moist by regular waterings. Later on when you have a good strike you can thin out the planting to give the bigger better plants more room to develop. Root crops are always best grown from seeds, especially carrots and parsnips as they do not transplant well, and you only get short stubby carrots to harvest. It is also a good idea to start off a couple of tomato plants now. If you can’t purchase then grow from the laterals you are removing from your existing plants. Now is about the last chance to grow heat loving plants such as capsicum, chili, egg plants, cucumbers, pumpkins. All of which are gross feeders so you could not only use Wallys Secret Tomato Food but also a drink every week of Wallys Liquid Plant food.

The Year 8 leavers at St Marys school in Blenheim who spent many hours creating a mural that will be a permanent reminder of their stay at the school.

St Mary’s leavers lasting legacy By Glenise Dreaver

Each year, the year eight leavers at St Mary’s School in Blenheim undertake a project before they go on to College. This year’s 21 leavers have created a mural that runs around the base of the front classrooms. It tells a parallel story of Creation and the biblical representation of the events following

God’s Creation of Man. Mieke Davies, a local artist and youth group leader helped the students with the ideas and the design. The children then set to work with a will, sending many hours creating and painting the circular icons around the base of the front classrooms, leaving a lasting reminder of their time at the school.

“The Chocolate Station”, home to one of New Zealand’s most extensive collections of craft chocolate brands, is in Blenheim. Sitting right next to The Wine Station within Blenheim Railway Station, The Chocolate Station boasts an impressive selection of well over 100 delicious craft chocolate product lines, all produced by the most acclaimed chocolatiers and “bean-to-bar” chocolate makers from all over New Zealand and the Pacific. Comments director, Kirsty Parry, “Blenheim - the epicentre of the Marlborough wine region - is a fitting location for The Chocolate Station.

“There are many similarities between the worlds of chocolate and wine – with references to “single estate”, “terroir”, “climate” and “flavours” all interchangeable between both. “A quality artisan chocolate, like a good wine, comes with a range of flavour profiles to suit every palate. In fact, quality chocolate is one of the few products with a broader and more complex flavour profile than wine.” Both wine and chocolate come from a fruit and are fermented as a part of the creation process. Of course, most importantly, they both bring immense happiness and joy to those who choose to

indulge themselves! Now available are one of the best ranges of chocolates (and wines) in New Zealand, in one venue, at Blenheim Railway Station. The Chocolate Station has an award-winning range of bean-to-bar and chocolatier produced treats. Chocolate bars, bon bons, truffles, chocolate bark, chocolate brittle, drinking chocolates, kiwiana classics, gift sets and even a cacao tea. The mouth-watering selection of artisan chocolate brands found at The Chocolate Station are extensive, so pop in for a taste today. PBA.

Power Trust calling for trustees People considering standing for the Marlborough Electric Power Trust in February’s elections should attend tomorrow’s annual reporting meeting, Trust chair Nicki Stretch says. The trustees own 100 per cent of Marlborough Lines Limited on behalf of the trust’s beneficiaries, the electricity consumers of Marlborough. Elections are held every two years, with three of the six trustee positions up for consideration. This year, there will however be four positions, as one trustee was appointed when an elected trustee resigned during the term. That means a re-election of that position is also required. Nicki Stretch says the role of trustee is important, with significant duties. Nominations are now open and she encouraged people interested to attend this year’s annual reporting meeting where trustees, Marlborough Lines chief executive Tim Cosgrove, and Yealands Wine Group’s

chief executive Tiffani Graydon will report on the trust’s and companies’ performances during the past financial year to June 30 2021. This year, the trustees have determined that elibigle beneficiaries will receive a $50 distribution in February 2022. Marlborough Lines’ annual report is available online: www.marlboroughlines. co.nz or from the company at 2 Alfred Street, Blenheim. The financial report is also available online at: www.mept.co.nz or from Blenheim Accounting, 36 Maxwell Road in Blenheim. The meeting is on tomorrow, Thursday, December 16, from 7pm in the Whitehaven Room at the ASB Civic Theatre in Hutcheson Street, which requires patrons to show a vaccine pass on entry. Anyone can attend, but only anyone with an active power connection in Marlborough and who pays the electricity bill for that connection is eligible to stand.

sports talk With Jacob Page

Going to bat for Rosco I’ll defend Ross Taylor. Many people are now calling for the end of his test career after a sub-par sub-continent effort against India over the past fortnight. It’s hard to argue the 37-year-old’s form has dipped, he’s averaged 28 over the past two years and the last of his 19 centuries was in November 2019. His last innings in India was visually offensive, full of wild

shots which resembled a man out of touch. Despite all this, Taylor deserves a chance to make things right during the New Zealand summer. The New Zealand cricket team are not the All Blacks, they can’t just throw players aside with the calibre of Taylor and plug-in the next guy. Yes, Devon Conway and Will Young could slot into the No 4

spot while the other potentially opens but that will take time to see the fruit of that move flourish much like Tom Blundell taking the wicket-keeping duties from the retired BJ Watling. Rosco, as one of the top three batsmen ever produced by this country, deserves the right to call time on his career on his terms and at the very least, that deserves to be on home soil.

Society is full of people wanting to know ‘what have you done for me lately?’ - besides an unbeaten and important half century in the World Test Championship final, Taylor has not done much. However, he has seen it all and done it all in his 14-year test career. So to fellow New Zealand cricket tragics, cut the old warhorse a little slack. He was there when the cupboard

was empty, now that’s it’s full, let’s not become that greedy child at Christmas who is not thankful for what they have. Taylor is a team man, he won’t put his needs ahead of the team. When he knows he is done, he will say it. I’m hoping for a couple more tongue-poking celebrations between now and when he pulls stumps.
