Alex’s Sunflowers

Despite battling COVID lockdowns and restrictions, joy and smiles have been apparent on the faces of children in 236 kindergartens nationwide thanks to sunflowers grown in the Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens Project. Over the past four months, 11,694 kindy children have begun their journey as the next generation of gardeners. In Marlborough, 234 children from the Marlborough Kindergarten Association were involved in the project. Continued on page 2. Sunflowers bring joy and smiles despite COVID lockdownswith STIHL Continued from Page 1. The winner of the Tallest Sunflower in the region was Springlands Kindergarten, with their sunflower plant measuring 182cm. Teacher Christina Loye, says; “We are one of the seven kindergartens from Marlborough Kindergarten Association. “Kaitiakitanga is embedded into all our kindergarten programmes where tamariki learn about looking after our natural environment. “Dalton’s Sunflower competition gives our tamariki a chance to watch the process of the sunflower lifecycle from seed to fully mature sunflower. “The tamariki and teachers are looking forward to collecting the seeds to replant next season. “Thank you, Daltons - what a fun project.” The winner of the Widest Sunflower Head was won by Witherlea Kindergarten with a diameter of 7cm. Teacher, Cynthia Rangi, says; “This is the fifth time of entering the Daltons Sunflowers in Kindy competition. Previously we have won the tallest sunflower four times, but we are stoked to win the widest sunflower head for the Marlborough region. “This year, most of our sunflowers have flowered very early for Marlborough and we have never entered for details. Four-year-old Tilly Hellström, also from Witherlea Kindergarten was absolutely delighted to win the new award with her homegrown sunflower coming in at a whopping 240cm! * Tilly said, “I planted the sunflower with my Nana at her house. “It grew tall because of the rain and sun and rain and sun. My sunflower grew past the roof! “I like how it’s grown.” All the regional winners will receive a prize from Daltons, The Warehouse and new project partner GARDENA for the Tallest Sun- Four-year-old Tilly Hellström, also from Witherlea Kindergarten, with the winningproducts. sunflower she grew at herofnana’s flowerapplicable and Widest Sunflower head. New Year Honours

Taulapu ‘Lapu’ Oliver honoured By Glenise Dreaver

Taulapu ‘Lapu’ Oliver, JP, of Blenheim, has been awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in the New Year’s Honours List. This is for her services to the Pacific community Her citation says that she has supported the Marlborough Pacific community since 1990 and, she says, it has grown from the three families with which she originally worked to more like three hundred families from many different islands who have settled here. While her own home country is Samoa, Lapu’s focus is very much pan Pasifika, the workload growing along with migrant numbers as she helps many new Pacific migrant workers and their families to settle into the region. She emphasises that not all are RSE workers, but migrant families settling here. She assists with ensuring they have

translation services which help them to apply for key documents and services such as drivers’ licences, bank accounts, and citizenship applications. “It’s a huge amount of work,” she admits. She reinforced church affiliations by establishing a weekly Sunday gathering for the community at Pollard Park. With numbers growing hugely, worship now centres on the Samoan Congregational Church at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, where she has been on the Parish Council and finance committee since 1999. She supported the Kalia Trust to launch the first Marlborough Polyfest in 2019 and helped families enrol children at schools and with doctors. Lapu has also helped set up ESOL classes at local schools, and represented the Samoan community on the Board of Marlborough REAP

from 2011 to 2018, as well as being a trustee at Bohally Intermediate School. She has been on the Board of Community Law Marlborough since 2000. Lapu has also supported Pacific individuals in trouble with the law, recognising a lack of awareness of laws and customs, and has worked with Police and other agencies to provide education for migrants on the “dos and don’ts” of life in New Zealand, as well as finding mental health support where needed. She has been one of the founding members of EFKS Aoga Amata Blenheim playgroup since it was founded in 2014, and is a board member of the Marlborough Pacific Trust since 2016. Already a JP, her work was also recognised ten years ago, when she was awarded a Kiwibank Local Hero Medal in 2010, and it has only grown in volume since then.

Plug pulled on stoat eradication on D’Urville

Welcome to 2022 from all of us at the

Wednesday

Predator Free 2050 Limited has formally withdrawn $900,000 in funding for the D’Urville Island stoat eradication project. The Rangitoto Birdsong project, run by the D’Urville Island Stoat Eradication Charitable Trust, was initially paused in late 2020 due to it not being able to secure access to all the private land on the island. These land access issues have not been resolved and the project has now been put into hibernation. Acting CE Brett Butland said one of the challenges of eradication projects is they typically cover both private and public land. “Eradicating stoats on D’Urville Island is an important objective, but without guaranteed access to the entire target area on the island eradication isn’t possible - there would always be large pockets of land for stoats to reside in,” Brett said. “We’re disappointed for the Trust as we know how much effort has gone into planning this project to date. Though it’s important to note this is not a closed door. “We hope land access issues will be resolved in time and we can look to support eradication projects on the island in the future. But until that happens, we need to redirect this money to other eradication projects that can get off the ground in the

Savour the Summer Sunshine

next year.” Rupert Wilson, Chair for the D’Urville Island Stoat Eradication Trust said that they had made every practical attempt to keep the project viable but had come to the realisation that no further avenues were available to progress the Trust’s vision. “As a result, Trustees of DISECT decided that without the leadership and support of PF 2050 Limited, the Trust had no option but to ‘hibernate’ the Rangitoto Birdsong project. Our hope is that a project aimed at eradicating the island’s stoats will be launched sometime in the future when access to the whole of the island is available.” D’Urville Island Stoat Eradication Charitable Trust (DISECT) was established in 2004. D’Urville Island/Rangitoto ki te Tonga is the eighth-largest of New Zealand’s islands. It is a nationally significant taonga for its diverse geology, relatively intact and diverse plant communities and a high number of threatened, rare or unusual species. Predator Free 2050 Limited announced funding of $975,000 on April 14, 2020 towards a total project investment of $3.1m over six years. Other project partners included Rātā Foundation, Predator Free 2050 Limited, DOC and the Marlborough District Council.

Graduating students reflect on lessons for life The Life Education Trust’s Healthy Harold Programme is taught to pre-school children through to Year 8 students across the Marlborough region by their Marlborough educator, Genevieve McDonald. With many students across the region graduating from year 8, the team thought it would be a great time to reflect on what they have learnt, and valued, over their years learning with Harold and Genevieve. Trust co-ordinator Danya Bresill visited the schools involved and asked one particularly important question: “What is a life skill you have taken away from the Healthy Harold Programme to help you enter into College and beyond?”

and that it is not okay to bully.” Maz went even further: “Life Ed has helped me in a lot of ways learning about harmful substances like drugs and alcohol and the effects they have on your brain. “I have also learnt about puberty and growing up and getting used to your new body.

Flynn

Pippa

At Rapuara School, Pippa quickly got to the heart of the matter: “Life Education and Harold has taught me about good choices. “That I don’t need to be forced to do things - I can choose if I want to do something or not. I have also learnt about bullying and kindness

At Riverlands School, Flynn said he liked the way Life Education had

taught him about the anatomy and how the human body works to stay alive and what we need to do to help our bodies, while at Bohally Intermediate, Ben focussed on how he’d learnt to deal with friendship issues in and outside the class. “We used games to help us learn strategies to tackle with this.” Ella added that she had learnt that there are ways to deal with situations in the playground, so walking away and thinking before you speak and knowing what you are going to say is really important.”

Juliette at Redwoodtown School found one of the most beneficial teachings at Life Ed was how to use technology appropriately and how the internet can work in our favour. “Life Education is a fun experience that awakens young students to problems they may face, and Harold always brightens the lesson.” Willow had a thoughtful contribution: “Life Education is about more than twinkling lights and Harold. (No offence Harold!)” She continues: “Genevieve teaches us about tricky situations like bullying, she teaches us about

our brain, what we can and can’t control, and how to use technology appropriately. “It’s a super fun experience and I will miss it next year.” Teo had similar thoughts. “Over the past seven years I have been influenced by Life Ed - despite the colourful lights and singing giraffe! “Life Ed has taught me about the human brain, bullies, what we can and can’t control, cyber safety and much, much more. He then relented on Harold: “Harold is like a superhero, only better!”

Stepping up while stepping back Angela Woolf of the Wairau Valley says she has recently taken a few steps away from some of her involvement with local organisations. Here, she talks to Glenise Dreaver about her plans. Stepping back, however, it hasn’t stopped her from being one of the co-coordinators of the area’s colourful Christmas decorated Post Box competition, which has just finished. (She admits that it was originally her idea 11 years ago and it has gone from strength to strength since, with many other local people and organisations becoming involved.) And the stepping back hasn’t prevented Angela, a keen photographer herself, from being an organiser of Event 2022, an exhibition called photograph Wairau Valley 21. This is destined for the local hall in early May, and later for the Gillan Gallery in Blenheim. “It’s a major display,” Angela says, adding that 10 years ago, they held an exhibition just like this. “That was going to be a oncer.” But it was very well supported and she expects that this will happen again. Entries will, she says, be open to the public in January and every entry, whether taken on a phone or with a camera, will be exhibited in some way. The top 100 will be printed off, and a book is also to be created. And neither has stepping back a bit prevented her from organising an art exhibition in the area early in 2022. A painter herself, Angela says she works in acrylic on canvas. “ Very abstract. That reflects me. It’s just what comes out. When inspiration strikes.” She adds that when she was at Marlborough Girls’ College, she thought it was only her mother and brother who were arty. “I didn’t realise that I had any ability until later.” Ever modest, she is surprised to have sold “quite a few” of her works on Facebook. What she had originally wanted to do on school leaving was to be a professional photographer. So she went to work in a photographic laboratory in Christchurch.

It proved a dead end. “Just developing other people’s photographs all day wasn’t inspiring.” A year later she was back in Blenheim, where she says, she just “mucked around.” “I was a postie. Briefly. Then I worked in a vineyard, then in a jewellery shop.” None of those ventures ‘stuck’ either and the planned OE never happened. With coming to live in the valley, the bringing up of four children and picking up part-time work that was available, as a nanny, and on a flower farm, some social media contract work with Facebook, her own interests took second place. A photography career put to one side, she refocussed her aims. “I always wanted to be a writer. That’s my main thing. It’s what I do.” For years, she has worked on novels and short stories, getting long-listed twice for the Michael Gifkins prize. “Though I’ve never been picked up.” Nor has she found a publisher. Yet. Her promise as a writer also shows, however, with a third in the Zephyr short story competition run by the Wellington Society of Authors. “I also have a couple of stories being published in anthologies next year.” So it is to devote more time to her writing, now that her four children are grown and have moved away, that she has given up some of her other community activities. They include the local newsletter, her community hall involvement, the residents’ association and a number of other ventures, including being a REAP co-ordinator. There was also her involvement with the Wantwood Room, following a showdown with the Ministry of Education to keep and develop it in the face of MOE determination to give it to a Blenheim club. That was a hard one. “I kind of got a bit upset.” But a committee formed around her and they kept it in the end.

Angela Woolf; Making the most of every opportunity the Wairau Valley can offer.

Now Angela’s looking towards 2022, and completing a novel about a boy lost in the foster care system. “This novel is the one I was longlisted for. Currently I’m working on two projects, a speculative fiction novel and a story about the child left behind after his family’s murder/suicide. “It doesn’t fit any specific genre,” she says, She does admit to setbacks during 2021 that made it hard to concentrate after losing her vineyard winery position due to Covid and a bad harvest. “I’d been there for five years.”

Now she’s back on track, starting writing again and focussing on how much she enjoys living in the valley. “It’s really cool. Lovely people The river is close by. I can take the dog for a walk ...” Angela has used the opportunities the community has given her. One has been the wetland she and husband Tony have been working on restoring beside their home. “I’m quite passionate about it. We’ve planted over 200 flaxes, kahikatea and other natives so far. “In a world where ‘progress’ seems to be the goal, wetlands

have been drained and lost. I think this is the most important project we’ve taken on so far. “I’d love to get everyone interested in the natural environment and doing their bit to keep native areas for future generations.” It is typical of Angela’s approach that rather than developing her photographic, artistic and writing skills through formal study, she has developed them through reflective practice. “Anyone can do anything if they’re interested. This programme aims to support wine industry members increase their confidence, focus on their self-development and reach their goals. The programme matches one mentee with an experienced mentor from within the New Zealand wine industry, following a careful selection and matching process. The pair then meet regularly over the next six to eight months as the mentee sets goals, makes plans to reach them and is encouraged and supported by their mentor. Previous mentors and mentees have found the programme incredibly valuable, with the 2021 programme the biggest so far including 18 matched pairs. Applications were received throughout September and October, matches carefully made and the mentor and mentee work-

shops run by Fiona Fenwick were held at Giesen’s Ara Wooldshed Cellar Door in Blenheim. Auckland mentors had their session online due to Covid Alert Level restrictions. The mentors, all highly experienced wine industry professionals, generously volunteer their time and knowledge. “It’s exciting to see how many people from a wide range of roles are wanting to further themselves and their careers within the wine industry,” says Nicky Grandorge, Leadership & Communities Manager at NZ Winegrowers. “Likewise, it’s fantastic to see the passion and generosity of the mentors as they share their vast wine knowledge and experiences to help others thrive.” This year, thanks to the generosity of AnA Selection Cooperage, The Marlborough Lab Network, Klima, and New World,

Rural Police report- beware of burglars A burglary at a Chaytors Road property occurred between 1 November and 5 December while the owner was away for an extended amount of time. The property was occupied by another tenant at the time, who mentioned hearing noise but didn’t think anything of it and did not investigate. The offenders accessed the garage at the front of the house which was left unlocked and the property was not alarmed. The offenders jimmied open cupboards in the garage and removed car stereo equipment, a welder - as well as Christmas presents. This is a good reminder to always secure your out-buildings such as sheds and garages. Burglars will come onto properties if they see an opportunity – even if someone is home.

The border exceptions will allow approved workers to assist with the shearing and arable sectors over their peak busy period. The Government has also made some changes to the current dairy worker border exception, allowing more dairy farm assistants to meet the high demand for entry level staff around the country. “For seasonal work such as shearing and the arable harvest it is essential that we bolster our local workforce with talent from overseas,” Federated Farmers immigration spokesperson Chris

Lewis says. “We are also pleased to see the settings are being changed for the dairy border exception. Farmers across the country are asking for boots on the ground to help milk and feed livestock and the dairy assistant is the right role for doing this.” The government’s announcement over the weekend follows many meetings and many months of advocacy by Federated Farmers, DairyNZ, the Shearers Contractors Association, Rural Contractors NZ and Dairy Women’s Network to try and get an improved class exception process and staff on farm. “Last week we met twice with ministers to give this an-

other push and get messages across,” Chris says. While the border exceptions have been approved, employers and their workers are still faced with a complex and lengthy process to get employees into New Zealand and working on farms. “The border exception is just the first part of this process,” Chris says. “Employers and their workers will need to work closely with their respective industry groups to sort MIQ, flights and all the associated paperwork. This is not an easy or cheap task for either party, but with unemployment at such low levels this is really the only option for much of the primary industries at the moment.”

Still with burglaries, this time at a property near Lake Argyle. The property was unfortunately struck twice in a week during November. The offenders made off with mostly food and clothing. A police team spent time giving the property owners crime prevention advice designed to reduce the risk of further victimisation. During December, Police

Ngā mihi o te Tau Hou, Happy New Year and welcome 2022! We reflect on the year that was, impressed by some of the fantastic community events, such as the ‘Hole Lotta Golf’ team of Jamie Norton, Matt Croad, Bob Tate & Jason Giblin fundraising their way to take part in the Longest Day Golf Challenge. They raised an exceptional total of $32,800. This amount alone replaced the loss of our COVID-cancelled 2021 Daffodil Day street collection, which usually takes us months of personnel, planning & preparation. We moved into a lovely new space, leasing a house on Maxwell Road that allows private offices to work from, huge storage for our event equipment and the ability to host groups and activities onsite. We changed our Breast Cancer Support group into a COVID-proof virtual forum that can continue regardless of the traffic light. Even when we return to “green” some patients may still wish to attend virtually or tune in from afar when attending cancer treatment. We farewelled our Support & Information Nurse, Gina Saunders. Gina has been a welcoming friendly team member, supporting people from diagnosis through to life after cancer. We wish you all the best for 2022, Gina. And we ended the year meeting Brooke Goodsir, a special 11-year old, who shaved her hair for cancer hoping to make a wig for someone who needed it. An inspirational act by a selfless young person, made possible with help from local good sort Karen Maxted of Allure Hair Studio. We know there may be a few road bumps ahead as we welcome the New Year, but our local cancer support services are here to help you and your whānau affected by cancer. Your treatment team or health professional can refer you, or you can self-refer by simply making an appointment to see us on 03 579 4379 or marlborough@cancersoc.org.nz Our free 0800 CANCER information helpline is also available from Wednesday 5th January, 9am – 5pm. We’ll be advertising 3 new vacancies for a part time Centre Administrator, a Support & Information Coordinator, and a Community Engagement Advisor in January. Wishing you all health and happiness in 2022!

By Glenise Dreaver

Blenheim Workbridge has honoured Campbell Brown, labour manager for the Blenheim labour placement and recruitment firm Opt4 Personnel. His award is testament to his excellent record of workplace placements for their clients in the Top of the South who have extra support needs. Campbell’s main role for Opt4 Personnel is to hire short term labour for local businesses, through normal recruitment channels and also in conjunction with local agencies such as Workbridge. “We also do corporate recruitment,” he adds. Finding suitable employees is proving a battle for local firms Campbell says, and so his relationship with Workbridge, matching up positions with possible employees, is proving a win-win situation. “There are a lot of factory-oriented positions in established firms that might have, say, three positions come up on the factory floor. “They’ll ask, ’Can you find someone for us?’ That’s not necessarily a straightforward request, especially with the need for vaccine passes and pre-employment drug testing adding an extra hurdle. So he can go to Workbridge employment consultant Raramai Nicklin (Ra), consult with her about the firm’s needs. Ra will profile suitable clients and send through the CV’s which reveal the nature of her client’s needs and abilities. He also gets to meet the candidates and find out their back stories. He says there are many issues that inhibit people from working, such as mental health, addictions, and family matters. Though what is important, Campbell says, is that there is full disclosure to the firm that Opt4 Personnel will be placing them in. This helps him make the best possible placement and get the best outcome for the employees. Ra says Campbell’s supportive and positive approach to helping them is “really, really good. He has just the right attitude. He’ll go above and beyond to give anyone an opportunity.”

gardening this week Handy tips for healthy plants: By Wally Richards We are now in the middle of the gardening year and the hours of light will slowly shorten as we head into autumn and winter. Has it been a good gardening year? A good question, but as with most gardening endeavours, we have some successes and some failures. The weather plays a big part and a mild winter will mean more problems of pests and diseases while a really cold, frosty winter will tend to make for fewer problems in summer. On annual plants such as tomatoes and cucumbers pests such as whitefly and psyllids can be reduced by removing older leaves that have been hosting large colonies of young nymphs. Insect problems on citrus and thrips on rhododendrons are easy to solve by simply scattering Wallys neem tree granules on to the soil in the root zone. It takes about six to eight weeks to clean all the pests off the plants. If you use the same method on other plants or shrubs/trees and find it is not working so well then make up a solution of black strap molasses and unrefined sugar (not raw sugar) using a table spoon of each dissolved in a little hot water then added to two litres of water before watering or spraying over the neem granules on the soil. This gives the plant a boost of sugars which makes the granules more effective. It also feeds the beneficial microbes in the soil, increasing their numbers. If you water with chlorinated tap water or chemical fertilisers and chemical herbicides then these

knock back the soil life and your plants’ health is reduced. If you have a disease in the soil, including club root, then use Wallys terracin soil pathogen suppression as a soil drench followed up with a mycorrcin soil drench. If you want to keep your strawberry plants producing well through the summer, spray the foliage with mycorrcin every two weeks. It makes a big difference. You can add Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) to the mycorrcin or just use it on its own. Spraying your preferred plants with MBL once or twice a month will amaze you as to how better your plants are. A little black-strap molasses added to the MBL will take your spray up to the next level of health. One of the new ways to grow plants this year was the introduction of a hydro-flow growing system. It uses of a special manual valve that opens to flood the tray that your containers are sitting in, then shuts off until the container is dry, and then opens up again. Using Wallys Super Plant food with MBL added gives the plants all the minerals and elements they need to easily produce great, healthy vegetables in about half the time it would take in the garden. The system is simple; one or more containers connected to a tank of nutrients situated in a sunny, sheltered place outside or inside a glasshouse. Outdoors you need to place a plastic cover over the top of the container to prevent rain water from diluting the plant food.

A gardener this week told me that he had grown a hearting type lettuce in a 8.5 litre hydro-flow pot and after it grew a nice big head he cut off the head and left the trunk in the container to remove later. After a few days the trunk sprouted new foliage around the perimeter and now he has an ongoing supply of nice, fresh lettuce leaves. I know brassicas such as broccoli and cabbage will do that in open ground, but did not realise the same could happen with lettuce. So if you want to treat yourself then invest in a one pot or twin pot system. Later you can increase the number of trays and containers and you have a growing system that is going to give you years of pleasure. A tip about grapes I learned this week from a reader who owns a vineyard. When the grapes flower then set the fruit, there is a little bit of flower debris left and as the fruit swells, this rubbish can get trapped in between the fruit. As it rots it can spread the rot to the healthy grapes and cause botrytis (rot). So in a vineyard what they do is to have a machine come in and shake the vines to knock off the spent flower petals. I was told to put one hand under a baby bunch of grapes and shake the bunch with the other hand and see how much stuff falls into your open hand. Yep, that works. So those with grape vines get out there and do a bit of vigorous shaking.

txt talk with The Sun Taylor River Ford The ford at the west end of Wither Road has been repaired at least four times during 2021. Each time the same small diameter pipes are repositioned and covered over only to wash out again. When will MDC engineers ever learn? Simcox must love this contract.

Re: Marlborough Roads I think the text about Marlborough Roads doing a substandard job has only mentioned the tip of the iceberg. The condition of our roads and maintenance carried out are poor. Recent repairs in Old Renwick Road and Hutcheson Street have needed repairs within weeks. Regularly we have roads like Budge Street and SH63 with shocking holes and bumps that can lead to accidents and damaged vehicles. Surely there’s plenty of other poorly maintained roads. Spitfire Drive had had a repair needed spray painted for all of 2021 but actually fixing it seems too much trouble.

Stay in town New upgrade to the Makana shop is great but would rather have had them stay with a small outlet in the town centre as well. Missing it and therefore don’t buy as much as not handy.

Great cafe Ritual still the best in town for eggs! Keep up the great work Julie at this cosy friendly nook.

Flee to Wanaka couple

104 years young Great to see wee story on Jean Leslie 104 years old in The Sun . Jean doesn’t look a day over 70, nice to see her looking so good. Hope you have many more years...

How do I stay safe?

There must be more out there than myself, to have a laugh at their conviction. Obviously ‘old saying’ money talks. All NZ obeying rules and these two just tried their hand to pop down to their crib in Wanaka. Good on neighbours for potting them. Circumstances, they should have lost their mansion. Make an example of them. What after all everyone has been through will the rest of NZ be thinking. Justice … I think not.

I am 75 and like to keep fit, so I walk each morning for 30 minutes just around the local streets. I am becoming increasingly worried for my safety as I am frequently confronted with bicycles, scooters and skateboards on the footpath, hurtling towards me or screaming up from behind. It doesn’t take much for me to lose my balance

Think of the planet

Disappointed

As regular visitor to Marlborough from Christchurch I am disappointed and quite frankly annoyed at the amount of large polluting vehicles driven by the masses. I understand the need for builders etc to have a utility vehicle but the amount of retired folks and young parents who seem to have no consideration for the next generation stuns me. Marlborough, for a region that relies on viticulture, horticulture , aquaculture and agriculture for its wealth perhaps biting the hand that feeds you is not a good idea. Think about the impact on your livelihoods and the environment when deciding which vehicle to purchase. Buy hybrid or electric.

Chop and changing

Thanks for that Xmas prezzie Jacinda, a trip to visit loved ones in Australia now been squashed yet again. Who voted you in? No one putting their hand up now.

Our PM got us to the 90% vaxxed that she wanted and now she’s moved the goal posts again. Sad for Air NZ and so disruptive for many people. Let’s hope she’s not voted in next time. Or maybe she won’t want the job anyway?

WANTED JOURNALIST The Blenheim Sun in Marlborough is looking for a new journalist to join our team.

The return of Tiger Woods to golf was masterfully handled. He and son Charlie stole the show as the 12-year-old teamed up with the world’s most famous golfer — AKA dad, Tiger Woods — at the PNC Championship in Florida. Tiger was making a remarkable comeback from his horrific car crash earlier this year that many feared would end his career. I’m no Tiger fanatic, I don’t lose my mind whenever he threatens to hit a golf ball.

To me, he’s a flawed genius but he is golf’s cash cow. Tiger and Charlie finished second to the father-son duo of John Daly and John Daly II. Not that anyone really cared. People were just happy to see Tiger back swinging a club but I do not believe this is the start of a comeback for the 15-time major winner. Firstly, Tiger played with the assistance of a golf cart. You cannot do that at a major like The Masters.

You must be accurate, ambitious and hungry for an interesting story. Also capable of taking a good photograph. Start date in early 2022 to be decided. Send your CV along with examples of your published work, to: The Publisher - Les Whiteside email les@blenheimsun.co.nz

to call time on his terms. On a side note, if you want to see a duo with the same beautiful swing, same walk, same man mannerisms and the same everyman look, just watch the Daly’s. John has never been one to fit into a stuffy, traditional portrayal of golf but boy, his son can play. Who knows, we might see Charlie and John II battle for a green jacket in the years to come. That would be true sporting theatre.

Secondly, Tiger is lucky to have his leg. There’s no guarantee that, combined with his back troubles, would hold-up enough for him to play four rounds of championship level golf. I’m not sure what type of golf closure would ever be enough for Tiger. There may not be a point where he is willing to walk away from the game and be content. Perhaps Charlie’s progression in the sport could prove to be the tonic that gives Tiger the chance
