not to judge a book by its cover. There’s lots of different content people think shouldn’t make the shelves, Marlborough District libraries manager Glenn Webster said, but ultimately the libraries’ policy allows staff to keep them on display.

Glenn presented the Libraries Collection Policy 2022 to councillors last week. The policy, reviewed every two years, outlined how the library planned and developed its collection – both physical and digital. Continued on page 2.

Continued from page 1. “The policy assists customers to understand the libraries’ content development, and management policies,” Glenn said. “And on occasions it’s used to clarify the libraries’ position if a customer is unsure, or unhappy with the content of a title in our collection.” The policy outlined the libraries’ commitment to the freedom to read and access information within the law set out by the Films, Videos and Publications Classifications Act 1993 and the Copyright Act 1994. It said they would not suppress nor remove material just because someone found it offensive. Furthermore, materials would not be marked or identified to show approval or disapproval of their contents, the policy said. Speaking after last week’s meeting, Glenn said people always had their own “sense” about what content was appropriate for the library. “I once had a pre-school teacher

that came to me about a picture book, and she thought we should withdraw it because the driver of a car wasn’t wearing a seatbelt,” he said. “That was really interesting. We didn’t feel we needed to [remove it].” He said some books for young adults could be “close to the bone”, and often children with higher reading comprehension could reach for them. “It’s important that people read what the book is about, not just judge a book by the cover,” he said. “Some of the content of that material may not be what parents want their children to read at that age,” he said. “That’s where we say in the policy, that it’s up to the parents or caregivers. They’re ultimately responsible for the books that their child takes home.” He said the library reviewed the collection almost on a daily basis, and consistently looked at reports to make sure its some 120,000 items were actually being taken out.

Redwoodtown Medical Centre is on the move. The Cleghorn Street practice is relocating to a new premise and more space on the corner of Cleghorn and Weld Streets, where the old Countdown once was situated. Practice Coordinator Amy Schoeman says the relocation to the new premise is about modernising the medical centre, and creating more efficient patient care. The new practice will include a brand new theatre for care such as skin biopsies and additional space to cater for client needs right across the medical

Amy says the new location is long overdue and will allow more space with eight rooms and a separate triage area. Amy says the focus on clinical time to allow for more specific consultations such as diabetic, respiratory, smoking cessation and immunisation clinics will bring a new, fresh element to the team’s services and ultimately focus on specific health care.

Death - the great human mystery By Chris Valli

A play which explores one’s relationship with death is set to take to the stage in Blenheim this week. Toby or not to be - stories of death and dying is a collaboration between husband and wife storyteller Tanya Batt and musician Peter Forster. Their own relationship stemmed from an alliance nearly a decade ago. “Pete and I ended up in a relationship as a result of this piece. I approached him to work with me on the project eight years ago. So it might be ‘until death does do us part’ but death also brought us together.” The show, which is suitable for an adult audience, encompasses a ‘weave of song, music, contemplation and conversation’ with traditional stories which considers one’s relationships with death and life. Tanya says the inspiration for the show came about after a series of conversations with her then four year old (now 14) neighbour, Toby Russell who had lots of questions about death and dying. His curious and insightful observations provided the stimulus for the show. The show has seen performances from Taupo to Bluff including Nelson and Motueka. Under pandemic restrictions, shows were cancelled. However, Tanya says she is grateful they get the opportunity to generate an audience in Blenheim

and acknowledged the support of Marlborough Hospice. Tanya has discovered the conversation of death and dying is an uncomfortable one for many. Yet, she says, the show’s holistic wonderings provide many questions across all walks of life. “Often people don’t even like to talk about it as they have the belief that you might attract the attention of ‘death’. Death does remain the great human mystery and while there may not be any agreement among humans about what happens to us after death, research has shown that opportunities to contemplate our deaths often result in people living more fulfilling lives.” Tanya hopes the show will give people something to think about or prompt people to have ‘that’ difficult conversation they have been putting off or maybe just leave people feeling more alive and grateful to be so. “On a practical level it might inspire people to sort out their ‘death admin’ (wills and funeral arrangements). Many New Zealanders have not made a will - we always think we will have more time. As a storyteller I don’t have an ‘objective’ when I share a story - what I do hope to do is to evoke a response.” One such response came from their participation in the Dunedin Fringe Festival (multi arts festival) mid-March when they received

More boats on the water On the busiest days this past summer, the Picton Harbours’ team counted 258 boats in and out of Picton, 398 at Waikawa and 238 at Havelock. A harbours spokesperson says: “These are high numbers and show what we already know - there is an upswing in people taking to the water in boats.”

MDC access changes Marlborough District Council says that given the new government guidelines, they no longer require QR codes or vaccine passes. However, masks are mandatory at libraries and Customer Service Centres, on MDC bus services and at bus stops. Council and committee meetings remain open to the public, but masks are still mandatory. Due to the setup of Council Chambers there is very limited public seating available.

Conversations with a 4-year-old inspired the play.

the news that they had won the ‘Beyond Words’ Dunedin City of Literature award. The award acknowledges excellence in wordsmithing - which Tanya says is integral for a storyteller. “We’ve had great feedback from people about the show and many people are now saying they wished they’d come along.” Tanya says she takes pride in the work she has done and continues to do. “As a storyteller I’m often asked about my favourite stories. In

short I love stories that leave people with questions rather than providing answers. Those questions might not always be comfortable but introspective curiosity, I believe, can provide the greatest rewards.” Tanya says they will be making a donation to Marlborough Hospice from the show. Toby or not to be - stories of death and dying is on tomorrow night at the Clubs of Marlborough from 7pm. Tickets are $20 and can be paid at the door.

Less sun and rain in March Blenheim fared poorly in the sunshine stakes for March with only 237.9 hours, continuing a trend for the first three months of the year with January and February well below average sunshine hours. However, there was less rain with 17mm of rain which is only 41 per cent of the long-term average for March rainfall. The first 20 days of March 2022 were virtually dry, with only 0.2 mm on 1 March and 0.4 mm on 11 March. The four days from 21 to 24 March were overcast bringing 16.4 mm rain. The final 7-days from 25 to 31 March all recorded no rainfall.

‘Today’s leaders’ take the plunge By Chris Valli

The Graeme Dingle Foundation ‘Drop for Youth Marlborough 2022’ fundraiser will see Marlburians plummet from 9,000 feet in a breathtaking skydive. The ‘droppers’ are asked to set a target of at least $1,000. All funds raised will support the work of the Graeme Dingle Foundation in transforming W h e n o n ly t h e b e s t W i l l d o !

young lives within the Marlborough region. In the first of eight profiles, we talk to a group of five Marlborough Girls’ College students. Taking the plunge to raise funds to help future students benefit is the incentive and motivation for Marlborough Girls’ College students. Head prefect, Te Ao Mārama Nepia, deputy head, Lava Tikeri, prefect Mya Wiapo, and students, Leni Manson and Jaimee Randall are amongst the 100 Marlburians taking part in the fundraiser. Head girl, Te Ao Mārama says she truly believes that youth are not the leaders of tomorrow, but they are the leaders of today. She says Rangatahi and tamariki in Wairau should have the opportunities to become the best versions of themselves. She is involved because as the head girl of Marlborough Girls’ College, it is her mission to walk the walk. One of her favourite quotes is “Tūwhitia te hopo” which translates to ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’. Meanwhile, Lava and Mya were Peer Mentors for the Foundation’s ‘Stars’ programme in 2021, and Jaimee is a mentor in 2022. Stars trains senior college students as mentors, and pairs them to work with incoming Year 9 students, to create an effective and positive transition to the school. The seniors’ deliver a wide range of resilience, life skills, wellbeing and teamwork-related lessons which are delivering real benefits for both juniors and peer mentors alike. So, when the opportunity to give back came up, Lava says she jumped at the chance: “We didn’t have Stars when I was in Year 9 and I remember feeling very nervous and scared when I started at college. I want to make sure all our new Year 9s don’t feel scared, and know that they always have someone they can count on. I became a Stars Peer Mentor to ‘give

back’ to my school and Drop for Youth helps me continue that, and make sure students in the future benefit too,” she says. Mya says Stars gave her really good leadership training. “I hadn’t been in a role like that before, but Stars helped us all become confident leading our classes. We made good bonds not only with the Year 9s but among the peer mentors, and we learned to communicate more effectively. Most of all, it was amazing to see all the Year 9s grow in confidence in Stars.” Leni was herself a Stars student in her Year 9 year and says it made a difference for her. “The Stars camp really helped our whānau

class become like a real whānau. We made connections that have lasted - even two years on, we still have those bonds.” Jaimee says she missed out on Stars in her Year 9, as the programme was introduced the year after she started college. However, she has become a Stars Peer Mentor to make sure others don’t miss out. She says Drop for Youth is definitely a good cause and ultimately they are doing it because it’s for the youth of Marlborough. All five of the students have Givealittle pages where you can sponsor them. The ‘Drop Day’ is scheduled for May 28 at Skydive Abel Tasman, Motueka.

Linda Holdaway the Musical and Orchestra Director for Les Miserables.

Weeks out from the opening night of Les Misérables, Chris Valli looks at the production crew. This week he introduces a local face with Musical and Orchestra Director Linda Holdaway. When you are as passionate about all things musically as Linda Holdaway is, it is no surprise to see her involved with the biggest show in the Blenheim theatre scene for a number of years. This year Linda will celebrate 30 years of being involved with the society after her first show back in 1992 in the orchestra for Finnian’s Rainbow. Her musical insights and vocal knowledge have contributed to the success of Blenheim Musical Theatre over a number of years from shows such as Chess, Mamma Mia, Blackadder and now the big one, Les Misérables. So where does this one sit with her? “For me this is the biggest show I have been involved in as far as people on and off stage are concerned.” She says one of the learn-

ings with a show of this magnitude where planning and time management is integral is providing a schedule in advance to all those involved. “I’ve found that by doing that most people have looked at their part before the practice and are fully prepared for what we are rehearsing which has saved a great deal of time.” With a score that has complexities, undertones and palpable transitions, Linda says the rehearsals with the cast (some who are new to reading music) and orchestra has been a learning curve for all concerned. “The most difficult but also enjoyable part of the Les Mis process has been teaching the vocals as many of the cast don’t read music and there are many awkward timing sequences to be memorized. Whereas the orchestra all read and follow the music. Having taught it already to the cast I was very familiar with the score by the time I moved onto orchestra practices.” Linda’s musical resume

is impressive. She holds a Diploma of teaching singing with the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (London). She admits her role with Blenheim thespians spanning over three decades has allowed her to recognise and see the potential in people that they weren’t aware of and being able to guide them and help them grow in confidence. With a home grown local cast and the inclusion of two groups of children in the show (affectionately referred to as red and blue groups - note the context of the colours) she says it gives the authenticity and back story to Paris during the 1832 rebellion amidst economic hardship and a cholera epidemic. Sound familiar? “All of the principal roles are of a very high standard, but I love the inclusion of the children in the production. It makes the story come to life with a range of ages just like a real community and we really do have some lovely young talent to watch grow over the next few years.”

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street.

Q: Should unvaccinated people get their job back?

Alana Jamieson Blenheim I think people should have the right. The right to choose and not be told - isn’t this a democracy?

Breffni O’Rourke Blenheim It’s a tricky one. If their position hasn’t already been replaced by other staff and it’s safe for them to go back into the environment then yes. However, what if they are working with vulnerable people?

Letters Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. A maximum of 150 words please. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even when a nom de plume is provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to

Kate Tomlinson Blenheim Yes because it’s infringing on people’s rights. Give them a choice and get on with it.

to the editor abridge letters or withhold letters from publication. Email them to news@blenheimsun. co.nz or present to our office at 72 High St. Please note that your name and street address MUST be provided with emails.

Maria Petronella van Kuyk Blenheim Yes, I think so. They should not have lost their jobs in the first place. It’s about freedom of choice. There could be many genuine reasons why people choose not to be vaccinated. It is harsh that they would lose their jobs because of it. Be kind, be safe.

Riki Palatchie Blenheim Why wouldn’t they?

Vincent van Kuyk Blenheim Yes they should. Majority of people are now vaccinated so the unvax don’t pose the same concerns they did a few months ago. We are well on top of this now and need to get on with life.

Sav blanc integrity Dear Ed I would like to add to the comments made by Marcus Pickens of Wine Marlborough, in response to the letter by Tony Orman (Integrity of Sauvignon Blanc) in your paper of 30 March. Sauvignon blanc is – and will for the foreseeable future – the backbone of the successful New Zealand Wine industry, generating some $2m of export earnings to New Zealand. While it may not be to the taste of all, there are millions of consumers internationally that enjoy the vibrant taste

of New Zealand Sauvignon blanc. I sympathise with Tony regarding imported blends. Unfortunately, predominantly due to adverse weather at f lowering in 2020, yields in 2021 were significantly lower than average. However, international demand appeared higher than ever. To maintain supply, wineries may be forced to import, inferior Sauvignon blanc to blend with the local product to maintain shelf space for their lower-priced wines. This enables the pure New

Zealand Sauvignon blanc to be exported, maintaining our international reputation. Both of the wines Tony mentioned retail for about $10. Can I suggest he spends a little more on his tipple, check the label for place of origin, and enjoy a glass of locally produced Sauvignon blanc with his locally caught trout? Kind regards Mike Trought Fellow, New Zealand Winegrowers Blenheim

MGC debate Dear Ed, I read with interest and concern the recent articles about Marlborough Girls College. While Brian Roughan says ‘all is well’ at MGC the dissatisfaction remains and has gone underground again. Fear of speaking out is a real thing with people needing to protect themselves and people they care about. However, the talking will not stop and will surface again. I hope the Board is taking notice and working behind the scenes to ensure a safer

working environment for their hard-working staff. I also hope the community is concerned. There are many factors essential to educating young people, including a settled nurturing learning environment. I have thought long and hard about signing this letter and decided putting my thoughts ‘out there’ is more important for me than sitting on the side-lines muttering. Robyn McGill Blenheim

He korero no te Kaunihera o Wairau NEWS FROM THE MARLBOROUGH DISTRICT COUNCIL

Strong performance by Marlborough economy despite trying times Despite the challenges of Covid-19, Marlborough has been a strong performer according to the latest quarterly economic data recently released by Infometrics. The report estimates Marlborough’s economy grew 6.8 per cent over the year to December 2021 compared with 5.5 per cent national growth. The report attributes this to a resurgence in activity following the September 2021 quarter lockdown, as well as the region’s underlying strengths such as consumer and tourism spending growth, a busy construction sector and a robust labour market. When compared to 2019, Marlborough was the strongest performing region in the country. Mayor John Leggett says despite difficult times, Marlborough’s economy has shown itself to be resilient. “Locals have continued to support locals benefitting our economy while our New Zealand visitors, and their spending in our region, have also helped keep us afloat in trying times,” he said. According to Marketview data, consumer spending in Marlborough rose 5.5 per cent in the December 2021 year, slightly ahead of 5 per cent growth nationally. Spending by visitors in Marlborough rose 12 per cent in the December 2021 year to reach $193M, surpassing the $183M spent in 2019 when international tourists were still part of the picture.

Last chance to participate in recycling crate trial

Mayor Leggett said strong local foundations put Marlborough in good stead as we came up against Covid-19. “Our primary sector viticulture, agriculture, forestry and fisheries - along with the science and technology and construction sectors have been key in our region’s strong economic performance.” Statistics New Zealand figures show Marlborough recorded a regional GDP increase of 3.7 per cent in the year to March 2021 - higher than the national increase of 0.8 per cent. While regional economies have seen varying impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic, Marlborough’s GDP increase, one of the highest in the country, was reported to be driven by primary manufacturing, owneroccupied property operation and agriculture. According to Statistics New Zealand, these three industries comprised 37 per cent of Marlborough’s economy in 2020 and were less affected by the Covid-19 restrictions. In contrast, some of the region’s smaller industries, such as transport, administration and support services, and accommodation, saw declines over the 12 month period. Calling all recyclers from the windy streets of Blenheim and Picton. Council needs your help to trial modified recycling crates that might stop our recycling from being carried away by the wind. Solid Waste Manager Alec McNeil says the trial involves using two different crate options for one week each and completing a survey over the phone after using each one. “The first option is a crate that has been fitted with a net and the second is a liner that fits inside the crate and then ties shut,” he said. Feedback from the trial will be used to inform Council and potential recycling contractors on improvements to the current recycling crate. Trial entries close this Friday 8 April 2022. To sign up go to: www.marlborough.govt.nz/ services/recycling-and-resource-recovery/ rubbish-and-recycling-projects/recyclingcrate-trial?ed-step=1

Supporting seniors during Covid-19 Physical distancing and isolation guidelines aim to protect everyone from Covid-19 but isolation can also cause harm for some seniors who are already vulnerable to loneliness. While you may not be able to see older friends or family members in person there are still ways to support your loved ones in a way that they are comfortable with. Phone and video calls, texts, emails, a note on the door or a chat over the fence (from an appropriate distance) are great ways to keep communication going. A good start is to ask and discuss how your friend or family member would like you to help. This may be by shopping for food and essentials or helping them set up a weekly delivery of groceries. It’s also important to take note when people stop calling - sometimes people don’t reach out when they’re not feeling good because they don’t want to trouble family members or doctors. As a family member or friend you might need to do some prodding and be proactive with follow-up. Maintaining social connection and staying in touch is critical to our wellbeing but if you are unwell you should stay at home and call your doctor or Healthline on 0800 358 5453 to get

advice on whether you should be tested for Covid-19. Getting vaccinated is an important step in protecting yourself and others from the effects of Covid-19. To book your vaccine visit: www. covid19.govt.nz/covid-19-vaccines/ For more information on Covid-19 visit: covid19. govt.nz/

Time to give the home a good spruce up?

After 13 years in Clova Bay, and after only a few seconds hesitation, award-winning author Marion Day feels she can now count herself as a Sounds resident. That’s despite originally coming from the Bay of Plenty, where her love of the outdoor life and her fishing and hunting background has provided a rich source of inspiration for all 14 of her books, written both for adults and young people Clova Bay provides the ideal environment for her writing. The move was born out of the exhaustion she and her partner Stephen Podjursky experienced while owning and working a free range pig and drystock farm near Opotiki. Stephen was at that stage also a helicopter pilot, a firefighter flying the huge American S-64 Air-Crane used to fight massive wildfires in places like Greece and Australia. He was away for three weeks at a time, meaning Marion worked the farm largely alone. “Very work intensive.” His words, “There must be something easier than this!” sparked their move to the Sounds. Marion’s honest about how she felt about it at first. “Oh no!” It meant moving away from family and friends and a life she and her three sons enjoyed – apart from the crippling workload. She was wrong. “I was moving to the most beautiful place in the world. “And our home sits on five acres – three of which is beautiful garden.” Stephen eased the transition by building a stand-alone studio for her writing, just forty steps from the house. It’s a perfect spot, with one windowless wall providing an ideal and non-distracting writing space in an otherwise spectacularly beautiful environment. Marion’s just completed her fourteenth book there. ‘Dobby’ is the eighth children’s picture book she’s brought out and like all her work, it has been born in real adventures.

An outdoor life inspiring great stories

one on one with the Sun

Dobby’s a Hungarian Vizsla, a hunting dog owned by her youngest hunting-guide son. His winter goat hunting expedition, in a helicopter landing in the high country in the snow, took a tragic turn when Dobby got lost, his jacket snagged on a bush. He was trapped there for a week, proving hard to find. (Vizsla’s are bred to be quiet for hunting, known as ‘ghost dogs’ in their native Hungary.) So while the search was on, he didn’t respond to their calls. Marion tells Dobby’s story, adding a creative element based on the fact that he was found dangerously weak, but with two keas apparently keeping guard beside him. It’s typical of all her work “Adventure, outdoors.” And importantly, based in New Zealand. She says her middle grade children’s hunting and adventure books particularly appeal to reluctant readers and there’s been plenty of feedback on the way they get youngsters hooked on reading. That’s not just a happy accident. Marion does her homework thoroughly. “If I am writing a 600 word picture book, I am helped by proof readers, editors and illustrators and for ‘Dobby” I’ve also worked alongside two school teachers to make sure it’s child-friendly. “Their input has been invaluable.” The New Zealand theme is carried through to her books’ production, all stages being completed in New Zealand and by New Zealanders. The printing is also done in New Zealand – unusual these days. There’s just been one exception. Her magnificently-illustrated coffee table book ‘Passion – Living, Feasting and Writing Deep in the Marlborough Sounds’, saw the production finished by a New Zealand printer, but the actual printing done in China. “Otherwise the price would have been astronomical.” Marion’s last project has been reworking an earlier book that truly came from her heart, the life story of her first partner. ‘Injun

Marion Day of Clova Bay is a prolific author, her stories, all firmly based in her experiences and lifestyle in back country New Zealand. Here she talks to Glenise Dreaver about what drives her to success as an author.

Joe – the Legend of Smoking Joe Collins’. “Joe was a bit of a Ned Kelly,” Marion admits, saying the high end publication had followed her three times reprinted book, first published in 2013. “It spoke to the hearts of New Zealanders,” she says. Joe, also a helicopter pilot and the father of Marion’s youngest son, was killed in a flying accident in 1996 at just 46. Marion says Joe’s story is high interest, but also brings most readers to tears. The limited-edition collectable book, with its print run of 350 copies, is in a presentation volume encased in doeskin and retailing at $145. Reworking a book like that, for example for a different market, is a task she relishes and, she says, can see her working 10-12 hours a day. Yet Marion didn’t have a literary background. “I’m just a country girl. I didn’t go to university, but I have had wide experience of life. “I had to learn to write though, but my work comes from the heart.” To succeed, she says, you have to work hard. “Have a plan and strive for excellence. That way, even if you only get three quarters of the way there, you will find that you’ve been successful.” More information can be found on Marion’s website www.marionday.nz. Author Marion Day of Clova Bay, finds a never-ending source of inspiration in her hunting and fiishing background.

A panel tasked with reviewing Marlborough’s freedom camping rules are stuck between a rock and a hard place, with some Marlburians wanting fewer restrictions and some wanting more. The Marlborough District Council received close to 90 submissions on its latest attempt at a Responsible Camping Bylaw, after its last one was challenged by caravanners at the High Court, with 19 submissions heard by the panel on Monday. The council appointed Commissioner Martin Williams – a Hawke’s Bay councillor with experience in resource management and local government law – to chair the panel. Alongside Williams, Marlborough Mayor John Leggett and deputy mayor Nadine Taylor will review submissions and make recommendations to the council about the drafted bylaw. The council’s 2020 bylaw, which was challenged by the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association, closed eight of the council’s 13 sites, leaving Blenheim’s Wynen St car park; the Taylor River Dam; the Renwick Domain; Lake Elterwater Reserve (in Ward); and the Wairau Diversion. Freedom camping was prohibited

Wairau-Awatere ward councillor Cynthia Brooks has called for a freedom camping site at the Renwick dog park - saying it could help nearby wineries. Renwick Domain is one of five freedom camping sites in Marl- SUPPLIED: SCOTT HAMMOND/ borough... for the time being. CHLOE RANFORD/LDR STUFF

everywhere else in the region. The bylaw also ruled vehicles must be self-contained. The 2022 draft bylaw proposed to keep the council’s five remaining sites, increase capacity at Renwick Domain from 10 vehicles per night to 20, and add three more sites. The three sites proposed were at Blairich Reserve in the Awatere Valley, Opouri Rd in Rai Valley, and Wash Bridge Recreation Reserve on State Highway 63. It proposed to allow tents at

Blairich Reserve, specifically to cater for cycle tourism. As part of the 2022 bylaw, area assessments also found five more sites that could be appropriate for freedom camping. They were in the Awatere Valley, Wairau Plains, Wairau Valley, Waihopai Valley and Southern Valleys. These had not yet reached a point where they could be included in the bylaw. If they were, a change to the 2022 bylaw would be publicly notified.

In the meantime, camping in these areas would be prohibited. Wairau-Awatere ward councillor Cynthia Brooks spoke to her submission on Monday and called for an extra site at the Renwick dog park – which she hoped would bring business to nearby cellar doors. “In my mind, it is time to reset the thinking on this activity on MDC land,” Cynthia said. The new 2022 bylaw is scheduled to be adopted and effective from May 2022.

Blenheim’s Georgia Bryant can recall the first time she was inspired to paint. “I used to have saxophone lessons. My teacher Peter Bargh is an amazing landscape artist, and he would always have beautiful paintings on his wall. I used to look at them and wish that I could paint like that. There are a lot of artists that inspire me, but a lot of my inspiration is from the incredible beauty of creation around us.” The 22 year-old is self-taught and has been creating art since she could hold a pencil. Although she had art lessons briefly as a youngster and a short stint through Te Kura (correspondence school in Wellington) her creative journey has been what she admits is purely through trial and error. Her favourite work is a circular cabin painting which came from multiple different inspirations. “There is an amazing artist in America named Chuck Black who I saw did a beautiful cabin painting, so the idea to do a cabin painting was from that, but my one is completely different. The little cat looking at the birdhouse was inspired by friends who have a birdhouse that looks the same. Their cat often hangs around it, so I just thought it would be funny to have a little cat just looking at it and waiting for its chance.” So how does painting make her feel? “It’s so relaxing and enjoyable. I love how it’s a little bit messy and there are no rules, I’m always excited to start a new painting. It can definitely be frustrating sometimes though. “I have found that there is often a point in every painting where you want to give up and nothing is looking right at all, so I’ve just been

Blenheim artist and painter Georgia Bryant says her inspiration stems from the ‘incredible beauty of creation around us.’ INSET: Georgia’s sheep painting came from the Wither Hills landscape. learning to push past that point.” One of her inspirations came from a walk up the Wither Hills. “I’ve painted things that are inspired by Marlborough. The sheep painting came about when I was up the hill one day and took a photo of the sheep. I’d definitely want to paint Marlborough landscapes in the future.” One of six kids, Georgia was homeschooled for all of her young education. She grew up playing music, going to ballet and doing a lot of painting and drawing. She says her talent or creativity stems from her DNA where her family are ‘incredibly musical’ and artistic in various forms. “I’ve been so blessed to have an amazing family that I’m still very close with, and they’ve helped me out so much. My Dad was

actually the one who made my website, and my parents have always been there for me.” It’s been a productive two years for the local artist. She married her ‘best friend’ Daniel who she says has been her rock supporting her painting endeavours. A former hairdresser, Georgia spent five years in the trade before painting opportunities knocked. One of those opportunities is the 100 day challenge where she is painting a small 4 x 4 painting in half an hour every day. The incentive to paint she says comes from the willingness to learn, to improve and develop her craft. Georgia is currently doing art commissions and has a website www.georgialeeart.co.nz. She can be contacted at georgialeeartist@ gmail.com or on her Instagram which is @ georgialee_art.

Marlborough Coordinator Shalom Del’Monte-Aberhart says the change of venue is to grow SHAKESPEARE ANYONE? Students from Marlborough Girls’ College and Queen Charlotte College who last year performed in the festival, take it out of being a 'school' event Wellington at the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Nationals and most of whom will be performing in the Anderson Theatre, at the ASB and to highlight the amazing ability and work at 5pm on Saturday for the 2022 version. that these students put into their pieces.

Shakespeare as you like it – live The thrill of interpretation will be to the fore with the physical return of the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival in Blenheim this weekend. The 2022 version is back on the stage after online versions over the past two years due to Covid restrictions. The festival is named after Wellington-born arts patron and philanthropist Sheilah Winn who founded the festival in 1989.

This year’s festival is being held at the Anderson Theatre at the ASB Theatre. Marlborough Coordinator Shalom Del’Monte-Aberhart says it is the first year that the festival has been held at the ASB as it is normally held at a school. “The change of venue is to grow the festival, take it out of being a ‘school’ event and to highlight the amazing ability and work

that these students put into their pieces. It has been something I have been thinking about for a while - how to raise the profile of this incredible event,” she says. “We have students from at least three schools competing. Marlborough Boys’ College, Marlborough Girls’ College and a year 8 student who is to be student directed. This year for the first time, the festival has been opened

up to theatre organizations and so we have an entry from the Marlborough Children’s Youth (MCY) Theatre.” During the Regional Festival, students engage with Shakespeare’s plays by performing five minute and 15-minute excerpts from them with schools in their area. Schools from each region are then selected to go on to participate in the National Festival

at Queen’s Birthday weekend in early June. The festival has been running for 31 years and in Marlborough for at least 25 years. Plays represented at the Marlborough Festival are Romeo and Juliet, As You Like It, Macbeth and Taming of the Shrew. Tickets for the festival are $7 and are limited with only 56 available. They are on sale from the ASB Theatre. The festival starts at 5pm.

GOING BEYOND TREATING SYMPTOMS TO FINDING THE ROOT CAUSE OF HEALTH PROBLEMS WITH A MARVEL HEALTH SCAN

G

etting to the root cause of any disease, especially chronic diseases, requires a detailed examination of the entire body because all organs and systems of the body are interconnected and work together. Chronic gut disease, for example, may not necessarily originate from the stomach and intestines. They may arise from dysfunctions in the immune system which then promote the growth of harmful gut microbes, which in turn cause gut inflammation and disease. A build-up of lead in the pancreas will lower the secretion of pancreatic enzymes, which are essential for food digestion. Furthermore, environmental factors can also cause chronic digestive issues. Sensitivity to certain foods or even food chemicals added to processed foods may also cause digestive symptoms such as

chronic stomach pain, bloating or irregular bowel motion. Even Nutrient deficiencies such as lack of magnesium can be the sole cause of chronic constipation. Marvel Health Scan is designed to examine the entire body and pinpoint some of the hidden causes of a health problem, such as microbes, nutrient deficiencies, food

allergens and environmental chemicals like lead and mercury. After the scan, the international doctors and healthcare specialists at Marvel Health will study the report and recommend targeted science-based natural treatments and lifestyle changes to support the body’s healing.

Experiencing life’s opportunities and perspectives One couldn’t say that Stadium 2000 Personal Trainer Nir Haz Paz is not passionate. Nir is the stadium’s lead for the men’s ProstFit class on Wednesdays and he teaches the circuit class as well as coaching the morning bootcamp fitness sessions. However, for the ‘Israeli superstar’ returning to his native home towards the end of last year under the Covid pandemic led to a new appreciation and perspective especially with his two year old daughter IIan (meaning young tree) meeting family for the first time. “Seeing family always brings a lot of emotions. But seeing a family, who haven’t met your daughter after three years, was an emotional whirlwind,” he says. Nir says his wife Doron (which means gift in Hebrew) had travelled back to Israel a few times since they moved to New Zealand seven years ago. However, they had never done so with a two year-old toddler and with the world fighting Covid. “Leaving New Zealand, being in an empty airport in Auckland was already an obscure but kind of pleasant experience. We were lucky to get to Israel on the day before Omicron hit, spending the first days keeping some distance from our family, until we got the negative covid results (but what are an extra few days and few metres compared to few years and being thousands of kilometres away anyway?) The meeting with them was very special, our daughter immediately bonded with her grandparents and quite quickly it felt natural to be around them. My grandmother used to say, “Life is like a dream”, so we tried to cherish every moment with them.” Nir’s arrival in Marlborough came about after fleeing the fighting in ‘Tzuk Eitan’ (the Gaza) war in 2014. “My wife and I decided that it was time to go to a different place to experience different opportunities and life perspectives.” The 34-year-old spent four years as an Outward-Bound instructor and Duty manager where he says the job allowed them both to discover Marlborough and the wonderful outdoors and people.

Nir says life is about spending time with the people who are most important to him and listening to what his body needs. "Moving, eating healthy, sleeping well, building strong connections and keep learning.”

Nir has been part of the great team at the stadium for one year. He says he thrives in the environment where supporting people to enjoy the long-life process of becoming healthier, building better resilience (physical and mental), becoming more mobile and achieving their respective goals is the best part of his job. So where is home for him now? “The place I feel home in Israel is in the Jerusalem mountains and desert and the Galilee mountains and bush. The nature in Israel is very special and every step feels like a step into history. Today home is mainly wherever my wife and daughter are. And probably when camping in my tent.” He says the biggest learnings during the past two years under the pandemic have been to make changes, to adjust and to, ultimately, being honest as to who he is. “What is important here for me is making a change every day. Every time I meet someone new by being true and honest to whom I am. It’s about spending time with the people who are most important to me and listening to what my body needs. Moving, eating healthy, sleeping well, building strong connections and keep learning.”

Hope and help after Parkinson’s diagnosis By Glenise Dreaver

April is worldwide Parkinson’s Awareness Month and the Marlborough committee, working with the 80-90 people they support, is letting local people know how they can help. Community support worker Brenda Green says the disease mainly affects older people, and far more often men than women. The diagnosis of the degenerative disease brings grief she says, and sometimes anger. “Some find it hard to get past that.” That’s why the exercise classes they run are so important. Exercise, she says, helps with much more than just coordination, balance and fitness. “It helps stave off the cognitive decline that comes later

in the disease. And it releases feel-good endorphins, and supports socialisation.” There’s a once a week class at the Stadium each Tuesday at 11am, and another at the Blenheim Bowling Club in Weld Street, that one also including those with Multiple Sclerosis and stroke. “And there’s Brain Waves in the Stadium pool once a week.” Her role also includes leading people to additional income and other support, including with home improvements like accessible bathrooms, ramps and equipment like walkers and wheelchairs. Their office is in the Marlborough Community Trust building in Alfred Street and can also be accessed from Farmers’ carpark. It is open on Wednesdays and Fridays between 9.30am-12.30pm.

Carol Taylor taste-testing one of the thousands of cheese rolls that can now be ordered in support of the Beavertown Lions Club charity fundraiser.

Cheese rolls scheme on a roll again All 36 members of The Beavertown Lions Club, plus friends, are back organising their ever-popular annual cheese roll fundraiser for local charities. Team leader Sue Murdoch, and committee members Wynnis Phillips and Annabel Stead, along with Carol Taylor, are busy leading the charge. Last year’s effort was a boomer. The scheme was picked up by TV1 and featured nationwide.

Heel toe, heel toe... Christine Finlow-Bates works on her balance at the weekly Parkinson's exercise class at Stadium 2000.

So in 2021, the total made rose from 300 dozen to 600 dozen. And sales were all to local people. Carol says they only sell locally, as the issues round delivery further afield than their usual Havelock, Seddon, Picton and Blenheim pick-ups are just too complicated. Buyers order and pay in advance and this year they will be able to pick up their freshly made rolls at the Redwoodtown Community Hall in Oliver Park between

11.30-3pm on Saturday May 28. Their rolls will be packed in dozen or five-pack containers. Carol says the cost is $10 per dozen, or $5 for five rolls. All proceeds go to local charities. Last year, the $5000 in profits went to providing free lunches for schoolchildren in need. Orders are now open. You can order on the Beavertown Lions Club Facebook page, or by ringing Carol on 0211 399649.

Car boots open again The Blenheim Rotary Bootsale fundraising project is revving back into life on Saturday from 7am to midday at the Railway Station car park. The bootsale has had to operate within the constantly changing Covid-19 Response Framework. “We’ve managed to get through the last two years with short stints of the bootsale being suspended,” says James McKenzie-Wiley – Blenheim Rotary President-Elect. “The Red Light framework made it very difficult for us to operate as mask compliance

was difficult to enforce without there being issues between our volunteers and a selection of vendors and customers to the bootsale. “We also felt that putting the bootsale on hold when the Red Light came into action for the safety of our volunteers and the community as a whole. “ He says the bootsale is the club’s main source of fundraising, so this wasn’t a decision made lightly. “With the slight easing of conditions under Red we’re able to return as masks are no longer

The Blenheim Rotary Bootsale Market recommences this weekend at the railway station.

mandatory, although people are still welcome to wear them. We are weary of the fact that Marlborough may still be peaking with Omicron cases but we feel now is a safer time to return.” The Bootsale has been an iconic weekly Saturday morning market

in Marlborough for more than 25 years. “We are very thankful to all our stall holders who have supported us along the years, some have been there from the start,” says James. To celebrate the return of the

bootsale this weekend, the club is offering, for one week only, free sites to everyone. Normally, it is $5. “One thing the bootsale is lacking is food vendors, so we would like to encourage any food vendors to come along.”

South Island farmers are being urged to get a tight grip on the financial internals of their farm businesses. That is the message going out to them as they deal with market fluctuations from Covid-19 and geopolitical tensions that are disrupting the production and supply of agricultural products. A series of financial skills workshops in Timaru, Christchurch, Ashburton and Nelson run by Rabobank’s Client Council was well attended recently. Farmers and young professionals were taken through sessions on financial skills, reading financial statements, key ratios and calculations and what banks are looking for when assessing a farm business. Upper South Island Client Council chairman Mark Hawkins said there was a real need for farmers to improve their financial literacy. He said it was not enough for farmers to go to their accountants once a year and ask how much tax they had to pay. “We trade cattle and just at the moment everything is up in the air,” the Pleasant Point

beef and cropping farmer said. “We have issues with shipping, the works are battling with Covid-19, there’s drought in Southland and flooding on the east coast of the North Island. There is so much variation and you just have to keep your finger on the financial pulse.” Mr Hawkins said farm values had gone up and farmers were now running quite large businesses. “You also have to be bankable. If you want someone to invest in your business you have to be able to run that business ... The clients’ financial literacy will affect how attractive you are to the bank.” Farmers had to know their balance sheet, profit and loss position, stock reconciliation and business basics. Even farmers who had commerce degrees could get into bad habits and needed to refresh their financial skills, he said. The Client Council runs other programmes such as Growing Future Farmers — a twoyear educational course for graduates with specialised agricultural industry training and development. Story supplied.

Feds survey: Farmers confidence at lowest ebb since 2009 Farmer confidence is the lowest it has been since Federated Farmers began twice-a-year surveys in 2009, survey results show. Of responses from nearly 1000 farmers from around the country, a net 7.8 percent considered current economic conditions to be good, a 10.1 point decline from the July 2021 Federated Farmers Farm Confidence Survey, when 17.9 percent considered conditions to be good. Looking forward, a net 64 percent of farmers believed general economic conditions would worsen over the next 12 months, a 25-point deterioration from the 39 percent in the July survey. Sentiment about general economic conditions is at the lowest level since the Feds surveys began in July 2009, surpassing the previous low in July 2020. Federated Farmers President and economics spokesperson Andrew Hoggard says the results are even more disturbing when you consider farmers were answering the survey before the surge of Omicron cases in New Zealand and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, both of which will weigh on economic growth. While a net 61.1 percent of farmers reported making a profit, a 5.5-point increase in July 2021, a net 11.2 percent expected their profitability would decline in the year ahead, 16 points down on six months earlier when a net 4.4 percent expected profitability would improve. “We’re getting strong returns on meat and dairy right now thanks to high global demand and food security concerns but clearly farmers are seeing a lot of that revenue going right back out again with higher fuel and fertilizer prices, rising labour costs, and the hot inflation that is affecting every other New Zealander,” Andrew said. The survey showed a net 52.7 percent of respondents expected their spending to increase over the next 12 months (up from 32.6 percent six months ago) “but this will be due to higher expected input costs rather than farmers feeling confident to spend and invest”. A net 1.8 percent of respondents expected

their production to increase over the year ahead, a 13.4-point drop from July 2021 when a net 15.3 percent expected it to increase. “This finding is another substantial drop and it was before February’s heavy and unseasonable rain, which caused a lot of damage and loss for many arable farmers,” Andrew said. Last year’s survey pinpointed the sector’s struggle to fill workforce gaps as a huge issue, with nearly half of respondents stating it was harder to recruit skilled and motivated staff. January’s result shows negligible improvement, with just a 0.2-point decrease on that finding. “We should all be pleased unemployment levels are so low in New Zealand given assaults on our economy from all sides, but this dire farm recruitment situation underlines why Federated Farmers continue to advocate to the government for additional workers - especially in dairy - to cross our borders.”

gardening this week minutes with

Hannah Price Koffie Mobile  Are you a dog or cat person? I’m an animal person but we have two cats, plus a paddock full of alpacas, sheep and goats that are all pets!  Three words to describe yourself? Loyal, loving and loud! My parents would say “the perfect daughter”!  What did you want to be when you grew up? A hairdresser but I tried on myself and realised I didn’t have the talent for it!  One thing we’d be surprised to know about you? I was an aluminium joiner in my early 20s. At that stage it wasn’t something girls were getting into but I loved working in the building trade.  Have you met anyone famous? I’ve met a couple, Penn and Teller the magicians were amazing to meet but a highlight was meeting Dr Hook.  My favourite food to cook or eat is...? I can’t go past a good cheese board or even an average one for that matter!  The shop you can’t walk past is...? A coffee shop... these days most of my shopping revolves around the kids needs!  What’s your favourite game of sport to watch? Sport isn’t something that I watch but if I did it would be the last few overs of a close one day cricket match.  Your dream weekend involves....? I’m really excited about getting to some live concerts.  Favourite programme or series currently watching? I have started watching Suits with Megan Markle before she meet Harry!! And I loved Peacemaker, very random and hilarious.  What’s one thing on your bucket list? I’m not much of a daredevil so my bucket list would be seeing more of the world with the kids while they still want to hang out with us!

Growing food: By Wally Richards I wrote this article eight years ago and to this day I have found it to be the best and less expensive way to make and grow in a raised garden. Extract from the original article: I wanted a raised garden that could be worked without bending down and the cheapest way for that would be to use roofing iron. Three new sheets of galvanized iron 1.8 metres long and two 100x100 fence posts were also purchased the length of which was half the width of the of the sheets of iron. When you cut the fence post in half there is no wastage. The fence posts are treated with chemicals so to overcome that problem a couple of coats of acrylic paint was applied all over the wood surface after cutting them in half. The posts are not going to be dug into the ground and the whole raised bed will sit in the ground on concrete (now this is very important that you have a concrete pad to sit the raised garden on). If not robber roots from plants, shrubs and trees will find your garden and fill it nearly to the top of the soil with feeder roots. After one season the raised garden will be useless and will grow nothing. Construction was simple; lay the two painted fence posts on the ground and place one sheet of iron over the posts to completely cover the two posts. Check to make sure its square fitting and then drill holes of suitable diameter to take the roofing screws. On a roof you would fasten the ridge part of the iron sheet so water would flow down the gully part. For your raised garden the reverse applies. Screw in the roofing screws at both ends of the sheet. The reason for using screws as apposed to roofing nails is they are easy to unscrew if you want to move the raised garden or extend it. The same is done on the other long length of iron. You now have two sides so next the ends. The final sheet of iron is cut in half making it 90cm long, a nice width to work on from one side or both. The posts are going to be inside the bed. The two ends are screwed to the fence posts. It is best to assemble

where it’s going to sit which ideally one long side should be facing in a northerly direction. One very important aspect about where you are going to place the garden and that is as far away from trees, shrubs or other plants as possible (unless it’s on a concrete pad). Now you have the raised garden ready to fill. Any trimmings of trees and shrubs goes in onto the pad along with any organic material which can be grass clippings (not sprayed with herbicide for over 18 months), sawdust, newspaper, old spent compost, old potting mixes and even some top soil (which is likely to have weed seeds in it). Filling the raised garden to about half the depth. You can even trample it down and add more to about half full. Over this you put several layers of newspaper. Cover this with purchased compost that is NOT made from green waste. Daltons & Oderings Composts are two safe ones along with straight mushroom compost. The fill will take it to about 35cm from the top of the raised garden. Now you spread some goodies such as Blood & Bone, sheep manure pellets, Neem Tree Granules, Wallys Unlocking your soil, Ocean Solids, chicken manure and then cover these with another layer of purchased compost about 5cm deep. This should then be about 20 to 30cm from the top of the raised garden and ready for you to sow

seeds or plant seedlings. After planting you can stretch some netting or crop cover across the bed and holding secure with a nail in each corner post. This will stop birds and cats from getting in and destroying your plantings and if crop cover is used it will stop most insect pests as well including butterflies. Having one long side facing north will heat up the contents through the iron; warming nicely the mix. The gap between the mix and the top creates a wind break and so you have your own special micro-climate and plants will grow twice as fast compared to if they were in open ground. When a crop is harvested just place more goodies into the bed and cover with more compost. You will get years of pleasure and nutrition dense vegetables for your health. You can easily extend the raised garden with two more 1.8m sheets and one more post cut in half. Unscrew one end that you want to extend, removing the end section. Unscrew the sides at that end so your new sheets will overlap onto the existing and be screwed on together. Posts at other end will take the end half sheet and now you have 3.6m of raised garden. Fill this as previously. You may need to place a brace across the middle to posts to prevent it bowing outwards.

Barking dogs

Redwoodtown desperately needs a postal agency….we were promised one…what happened to it?

Dog collars are not cruel…dog rangers recommend them. Better than having your dog removed from your property, and yes there are more important things to worry about in the world, but barking dogs don’t help when it’s constant nonstop. It’s called being a responsible dog owner. Think about it.

Professional care

Power prices Of course we are getting ripped off with power prices. Buller Electricity re donating thousands of dollars to Buller District over the next 25 years for river protection. So where are they getting that money from. You the customers. Where else.

The village staff at the local retirement home in Redwoodtown are amazing. They are professional and caring. We cannot thank them enough for all they have done for our mother during her recent illness.

A very big thank you to everyone who helped me after my fall at the café in Redwoodtown on March 4. Doing well!!

Re: Russian planes

Weather man

Very big thank you

Daily Covid figures As the number of cases is increasing, can we please have results for Blenheim separate from Nelson and Tasman. Maybe the DHB can do their job as we are trying to stay safe and avoid the virus.

Hopefully the person moaning about the Russian aeroplane flights doesn’t drive a German or Japanese car.

Sincere thanks My family would like to express sincere thanks to Barry and Lloyd at the Access Mobility Shop. They delivered and installed a chair into our parents’ resthome unit. Their patience and kindness was exceptional. Excellent service guys! You are tops.

Harvest trucks Can the grape harvest trucks please stop using their exhaust brakes in town. They also need to slow down sooner coming up to roundabouts, no wonder they spill everywhere.

Great customer service from a local automotive shop when I needed a new wiper blade after previously buying the wrong one for my car. They took the time to explain which one I should have had even though I lost the receipt. Also fitted the new one for me. Happy to shop there again.

Driving to Blenheim on near noon, there was an opossum on the Spring Creek bridge in an attempt to commit suicide I guess. Cars heading north were all swerving over the centreline despite oncoming traffic, to miss it – as shown what (not) to do on that stupid TV advert. My hat comes off to the guy that didn’t swerve and bowl it. The only good opossum is a dead one in my opinion.

Who’s had enough of paying tax and would prefer to line their own pockets rather than funding terrorism?

Covid deaths On current figures, New Zealand has had 42 deaths with C-19 per million. United Kingdom has over 2,500 per million. The ribbing we got in United Kingdom papers doesn’t stand scrutiny.

Shingle loss Don’t blame the council for boulders and barriers. Blame all the goons that were wrecking the place. About my third letter all this created by a minority wrecking the place. Fixed easily by replacing wooden bollards with railway iron ones. Who checks the checker!!!

Re: Campers Paying tax

What a pleasure to listen to Mike Puru explain the weather in plain English on TV3. I hope they keep him on or let him train other weather readers.

Don’t swerve

Re: Taylor Dam Customer service

Talk of the week

Really! 22 million being given to Maori for healing purposes. My god do they think their massages and potions are going to cure their high rate of diabetes, cancer and other illnesses? 16 per cent of our New Zealand population are getting everything they want; talk about apartheid in New Zealand, it’s here now.

Campers with certified toilets aboard parking. Blenheim is missing the $$’s the motor homer’s spend. Enjoying a weekend in Kaikoura we spent $300. So MDC change your views to help our retailers and cafes.

To the bloke who emptied his pool on Redwood Street this week, inconsiderate! It moved my shingle!

Big thank you A thank you to the lady at our big technology and appliance store for trying to help me with my tablet on Monday…there was no assistance and help with other staff…just no team work.

Too loud To the man living in the tin shed on Redwood Street – is your TV volume stuck? Fix it!

Thank you Thank you so much to the kind soul who handed in my cell phone from the Pak’n’Save carpark to the police yesterday. It reminds you how there is still kindness in the world – you really made my day.

Savour festival Having to buy a ticket to go is being bloody cheeky as Pollard Park is paid for by ratepayers. So it belongs to us all. Yet you’ve got the cheek to ask us to pay to go. Go use some private property.

Great community Thank you to the lovely lady who paid for my groceries on Saturday at Redwood Countdown when my pin number would not read properly. I could not repay you because you would not give me your name or address. You said what goes around comes around. I pray your blessing will come true very soon. We welcome your texts on 027 242 5266. sports talk With Jacob Page

Warnie gets amazing farewell Watching the State Memorial for Shane Warne on television from the Melbourne Cricket Ground was an emotional ride I won’t soon forget. The formality demanded he be called Mr Shane Warne for the evening but the Mr just seemed far too uptight for a celebration of Warne. No celebrity death has affected me emotionally as much as this or for as long as this. It still doesn’t feel right to have witnessed the end of Warnie at such a young age. For me, it still feels like a shocking and early end to a large chapter of my childhood. For people that didn’t know the type of bloke Warne was beyond his win-at-all-costs cricket approach or his tabloid-selling offfield life, the part-time magician

and fulltime showman clearly had a heart of gold and enough flaws that he was always relatable. What was most admirable about Warne on the field was how he made classy batsman look foolish when he got them out. It appeared he could get batsmen out by his mere presence at the tip of his mark, spinning the ball from one hand to another as he waited to bowl. He didn’t care about the cult status of the baggy green Australian test cap, he was happier in a wide-brim hat with a bit of zinc on his chops. Former England captain Nasser Hussain, who looked on the verge of tears while talking about the spin king before the event, said the English played the name and not the spinning ball. That was the showmanship of

Warne and a month on from his death, I still find myself, as a cricket tragic, baffled that he has left us at just 52-years-old. For a man who hung around guys like Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Mick Jagger, he remained someone who had a common man’s aura. One of the highlights of the night for me was the realisation the United Nations sent a representative to acknowledge the passing because Warne was involved with wildlife endeavours with them, who knew? The photos of him with sick and underprivileged children with whom he worked with illustrated the bloke he was. His smiles in all those photos are absolutely genuine, they are smiles of a man who was clearly happy to brighten someone’s day,

not because it was good PR to do so but because he wanted to do it. That was the special nature of Warnie. Yes, he’s an Aussie and on this side of the Tasman you aren’t meant to naturally like them but Warne was different. A larrikin for sure, Shane was always willing to use his star power for good. Make A Wish children, Tsunami relief and earthquake games were something he flew all round the world to be part of when he did not need to. Hopefully, this past month has given people the chance to get to know the classy guy Warnie was off the field and why his death was and is such a shame. A St Kilda AFL fan who loved a cheese toastie, a tin of baked beans

and a cheeky smoke, he broke the mould and revolutionised cricket and rejuvenated the art of leg spin. Adam Gilchrist hoped last Wednesday’s MCG tribute would be a full stop on the grieving but the celebrations of a career and a character would continue for years to come. I feel for his kids, who have had to share their grieving process with millions around the world who felt, on a lesser level, they had lost a part of their lives. As I mentioned in my previous column, I have a signed Shane Warne and Richard Hadlee cricket ball, purchased days before Warne’s death and I’ll cherish it as a small reminder of the greatness of Shane Keith Warne - certain to be the best cricketer I’ll see in my lifetime.

Blenheim Golf Croquet Handicap Tournament By Chris Valli

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Jan Cleland and Marg Foxton from Brooklyn Club who ended up in first place while Donna Kerlman and Peter Burt also from the Brooklyn Club in second place.

The Blenheim Golf Croquet doubles tournament was played recently with thirteen pairs competing for the Ray White Sponsored trophy. The tournament winners were Jan Cleland and Marg Foxton from the Brooklyn Club and they were presented with the Ray White Cup which Blenheim Croquet Club will hold and engrave. All players were locals being from either the Blenheim or Brooklyn clubs. There were entries from Christchurch and Nelson but unfortunately withdrew due to Covid restrictions. Spokesperson Leah Thomson says there were six rounds of play culminating in a final for first – fourth.

Racing body picks a winner The New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s new Chief Executive Officer is Bruce Sharrock. The NZTR Board says it recognised Sharrock’s proven track record in outstanding leadership, industry knowledge and relationships. “We have confidence in Bruce’s ability to continue the momentum already underway and take NZTR into new territory,” said Cameron George, Chair of the NZTR. “His understanding of the priorities our industry faces, and the actions required to create a sustainable future for thoroughbred racing will be critical as we continue to deliver our strategic objectives.” Sharrock who also held a seat on the NZTR Board is looking forward to the next step. “I am extremely proud and excited to take this opportunity to lead the industry into the future,” he said.

“There was some brilliant and sound tactical play and spectators observed many long range shots scoring hoops or clearing opposition balls.” Leah says section play was undertaken with Section A having 5 pairs, and Sections B and C having 4 pairs. She says this meant that there were byes in Section A, and a break for Sections B and C to allow the completion of the round for Section A. Leah says the semi-finals and finals provided the spectators with enjoyment and wonder at some of the shots attempted, both successful or not, and at the tactical appreciation and application of the players to progress around the lawn. “The results showed that the handicap system works with many
