Daphne’s special day By Chris Valli

Daphne Rita Hayes has seen it all. Born on April 9, 1918, the Springlands Lifestyle Village resident celebrated her 104th birthday on Sunday with fellow residents and caregivers. One hundred and four years ago, the prime minister of New Zealand was one, William Massey, the founding leader of the Reform Party (second major political party) while Wellington held rugby’s Ranfurly Shield. Marlborough was celebrating over the end of World War 1 which was overshadowed by the Spanish flu pandemic reaching this part of the world. Sound familiar? However, sometimes in life and in the throes of a worldwide pandemic, it really is the little things in life. Continued on page 2. Springlands Lifestyle Village resident Daphne Hayes turned 104 at the weekend. Her advice to anyone? “Behave yourself. Be decent and no lies. You are being good if you are doing these - be a good person. I would never hurt anyone intentionally. If I did hurt someone, I would be repentant. Always apologise.”

Hard work, discipline and eat everything

Continued from page 1. So what did the sprightly 104 year old want for her birthday? “To be able to walk freely and get myself around.” A former Highland and Scottish dancer Daphne had weekly lessons in Dunedin and often made such commitments on the train commuting from Ravensbourne on the Otago Harbour’s north shore, four kilometres east of the city. There is a saying that your friends are what keep you going. When asked what friendship meant to Daphne she emphatically says friendship is ‘total’ to her. “I make a friend, they stay a friend.”

As an early riser, she says her typical day is to start with a hearty breakfast, read the paper and pull a few weeds in the garden. “I was always working around

with her life and all that has come with it. Her advice to her younger self she says would be ‘don’t worry so much’. That it will all work out. Yet it is her advice and insights into a life well-lived that gives the greatest sights into a remarkable woman and human. “Behave yourself. Be decent and no lies. You are being good if you are doing these - be a good person. I would never hurt anyone intentionally. If I did hurt someone, I would be repentant. Always apologise.” So what exactly is her secret to longevity and good health? “Hard work, discipline and eating everything.”

Marlborough’s Anzac Day will begin in the traditional way with a Dawn Parade in Picton, the marchers assembling at the BNZ on High Street at 5.45am, ready for the 6am ceremony. They will be led by the Marlborough and Districts Pipe Band. Earlier advice from the Defence Force that defence force staff stay away from Anzac functions to protect the often elderly veterans has been revised. They are now permitted to attend and can march in groups, wearing masks and socially distanced, but not mingling with veterans or attending functions afterwards. Ward’s service precedes the Picton one, being held the day before, on Sunday April 24 at 1pm at the war memorial on State Highway 1. Participants in Awatere’s ceremony will assemble from 6.15am for the

Tree trim required to avoid ‘pistols at dawn’ confrontation By Mark Hanson

Claire Stewart is normally a mild-mannered woman, generally at peace with the world, but right now she’s as mad as hell with the Marlborough District Council. At issue is the council’s refusal to trim a 10-metre tree on the berm outside her Lakings Rd, Springlands, property and to remove the leaves. As a starter, Claire would love the council to play its part and remove the leaves which she has carefully piled up into a ‘mini leaf mountain’ about three metres long and a metre and a half high. “I’m a one woman protest,” she says, “of a ‘weed tree’ outside my property.” “Someone suggested I poison the tree, but I won’t be doing that. “All it will take is for the council to acknowledge its responsibility as the owner of the tree and trim it to a reasonable height and collect the leaves in autumn.” “This overgrown weed tree began in recent years to shed a ton of leaves all over our garden and block the guttering,” she says. “As it now nears 10 metres tall, it prevents morning light from entering our garden. It’s awful in summer and terrible in autumn. It dominates a fruit tree underneath which can’t grow up, instead, side-ways. “The lovely golden fruit no longer ripens and I can’t grow vegetables in a small nearby strip. “We are about to do a major prune of our other trees, and we dispose of leaves at the green waste tip. “So we’re playing our part with the trees on our property; what about the council?,” she asks. Claire says she had previously written to

the council asking for it to be topped. The workman who turned up refused and said he was there ‘to speak for the trees.’ “P-lllease!,” she says in emphatic desperation. “I’m all for a bit of tree-hugging, but the council also declined a neighbour’s more recent request for a similar tree to be topped. “Was it just a sudden rush of blood to the workman’s head or is this council policy?” She asks if it is the council’s policy to continue to say no to repeated requests to trim the tree, so that property owners are increasingly deprived of morning light and sunshine. “MDC has no right to do that to us. We do our bit keeping the berm mowed and tidy. “Past recorded messages left by us were ignored. “I now want this tree removed and replaced in a less intrusive spot with a lovely evergreen native tree. Is the deaf and uncaring council going to listen or is it going to be ‘pistols at dawn’ in the Small Claims Court for removal of the tree?” Robin Dunn, Marlborough District Council Reserves and Amenities Officer says this tree is a healthy Ash and due for inspection (and possible pruning) over the next 3 months. It was inspected last July. “Trees will be form pruned as they grow to maintain good form and will be pruned to retain a strong balanced attractive form and not encroach excessively into private property,” the council says. It said a regular pruning and maintenance programme for trees growing within street berms will be undertaken to ensure accessibility, safety, maintenance and/or visibility and the pruning will also occur to ensure there is minimal encroachment into private property or interference with buildings and structures, including infrastructure.

Doing good for the individual and the community drop for youth

By Chris Valli

The Graeme Dingle Foundation ‘Drop for Youth Marlborough 2022’ fundraiser will see Marlburians plummet from 9,000 feet in a breathtaking skydive. The ‘droppers’ are asked to set a target of at least $1,000. All funds raised will support the work of the Graeme Dingle Foundation in transforming young lives within the Marlborough region. In the second of eight profiles, we talk to two local doctors hoping to be the fence at the top of the cliff, instead of the proverbial ambulance at the bottom. Dr Georgy Walton is a GP at Manu Ora (primary health care team). The small team’s mission is ‘to provide a holistic approach that embraces and provides more fully for our Wairau community.’ With her eyes firmly on that mission Georgy says how could she say ‘no’ to a good cause like this.

Her colleague, Dr Rachel Inder nominated her for the ‘drop’ as Rachel had seen firsthand the impact of the Stars programme run by the Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough. Rachel says in a young person’s life you can’t have physical health as a silo on its own because that’s so influenced by mental health, family situation and the social context. “In order to have good health, you need wellbeing across all those aspects. Stars deliver ‘to a T’ in this wellbeing space, and create trusted relationships so our young people can reach out in their time of need.” Georgy agrees and says there’s no question that health and wellbeing has to be looked at in a multi-faceted way, and what’s good for the individual is also good for the community. “If our young people are happier and learning skills to improve their mental health and wellbeing and have got those tools, then we’re going to have a better community too. That’s definitely worth jumping out of a plane for.” Meanwhile, Dr Alexander Ory from Renwick Medical Centre says he sees people in

different parts of their lives, each with their own struggles and joys. “Particularly the young ones are close at heart to me, with much of their lives ahead but not always having had the optimal circumstances to be raised in.” Alexander says as a young father of two (one and three year olds) he is motivated to contribute to making the environment for kids as best as can be, not only for his own

GOING BEYOND TREATING SYMPTOMS TO FINDING THE ROOT CAUSE OF HEALTH PROBLEMS WITH A MARVEL HEALTH SCAN

G

etting to the root cause of any disease, especially chronic diseases, requires a detailed examination of the entire body because all organs and systems of the body are interconnected and work together. Chronic gut disease, for example, may not necessarily originate from the stomach and intestines. They may arise from dysfunctions in the immune system which then promote the growth of harmful gut microbes, which in turn cause gut inflammation and disease. A build-up of lead in the pancreas will lower the secretion of pancreatic enzymes, which are essential for food digestion. Furthermore, environmental factors can also cause chronic digestive issues. Sensitivity to certain foods or even food chemicals added to processed foods may also cause digestive symptoms such as

chronic stomach pain, bloating or irregular bowel motion. Even Nutrient deficiencies such as lack of magnesium can be the sole cause of chronic constipation. Marvel Health Scan is designed to examine the entire body and pinpoint some of the hidden causes of a health problem, such as microbes, nutrient deficiencies, food

allergens and environmental chemicals like lead and mercury. After the scan, the international doctors and healthcare specialists at Marvel Health will study the report and recommend targeted science-based natural treatments and lifestyle changes to support the body’s healing.

Both GPs have Givealittle pages where you can sponsor them. The ‘Drop Day’ is now a weekend and scheduled for May 28 and 29 at Skydive Abel Tasman, Motueka.

REDWOOD

Self Isolation, Self-Reflection Chris Valli is part of the barricade and ensemble for Blenheim Musical Theatre’s production of Les Misérables next month. Bonjour from self-isolation. The Covid terminology is all so familiar now and part and parcel of adapting to life under a pandemic. Mind you, rather now than in late May. Needless to say, it did feel rather odd not attending rehearsals at Lakings Road the past seven days and not contributing to the momentum of the production. As I write this, the past few days have given this writer not only a timely wakeup call (how vital health and well-being is) but a reflection on the dynamic of the cast and crew involved with this remarkable show. One of the extraordinary facets of this show has been the seemingly smooth transition of understudies and fellow cast members to ‘step in’ while others are self-isolating. Remarkable. It would not be appropriate to name those who have stepped up, especially over the course of the past month. Yet they deserve recognition and acknowledgement that their contribution is valued and deserved. What’s that saying, do the mahi get the treats? The essence of Les Misérables is the score. But it is not music alone; it is music working synergistically with the other elements of the show – pulling them together, giving them structure, above all making connections between apparently unrelated parts of the show and arranging them into thematic clusters. As we head into mid-April, we, Marlborough, the society are so fortunate to have this show as a vehicle and a platform to give back to those who have missed out over the past two years when a virus was mentioned via the

media in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Fortunate for a plethora of reasons. None more so than hearing of other musical theatre organisations (Tauranga most recently) that have had to postpone and ultimately cancel their respective adaptations of Les Misérables. One could suggest the May timeframe has, or could, work in our favour as we await pending restrictions on the traffic light system and what they might look like in the coming weeks (has the colour orange ever been more keenly anticipated?) In recent weeks, the visible marketing of the show has been to the fore in and around Blenheim. Posters on residential fences, at roundabouts, in Seymour Street. The production team always had the vision and foresight to put on this show albeit under whatever obstacles or restrictions came their way. The 10 shows reflect this with the Saturday shows (May 21 and 28) starting at 4pm (it’s a three hour production) and a 2pm start on the Sunday (May 22). Production manager Mike Wentworth says the 4pm starting time would offer locals the opportunity to go out for a meal and entertainment afterwards. Remember those days? People in the CBD and being part of the ‘local fare’ that is Blenheim. Self-isolation gives perspective on what lies ahead. There are many connections, implemented and reinforced by the score and the music. Such connections reveal considerable stature and nuance in the subtext of this production. Self-isolating is a good thing in the holistic sense. Slow down. Connect. And get ready for the biggest musical theatre event this region has ever seen.

associated aquifer? The Resource Management Act obviously isn’t coping. Perhaps there’s an urgent need to turn back to the old town and country planning zoning? Corporates obsessed with growth and maximising profit to the point of insatiable greed, can afford court cases and high legal fees to challenge any attempted controls to their expansion. The Marlborough District council is in an invidious position if it tries to say “enough is enough” to these corporates. Tony Orman Blenheim

Corporate wine expansion Dear Ed, If you have a chance to drive up the Wairau Valley towards St Arnaud, note the massive expansion of vineyards pushing further and further. The monoculture has spread well beyond the Wye bridge and it’s invariably the big foreign owned corporate companies indulging in super-sized vineyard expansion. Monocultures are bad environmentally but of major concern is all of these mega-vineyards need water. Are we therefore seeing the de-watering of the upper Wairau River and its

John Phillips, a member of the Vibrant Vineyard Church in Gisborne, picked up his phone one day in August to hear a Kenyan voice. Bishop Steve, the Anglican Bishop of the Nelson diocese, was inviting John to consider a call to the Awatere Joint Venture parish. The congregations cover the Awatere Valley, Seddon, Ward and Kekerengu districts “He’d heard about us,” said John, who took up the challenge in October last year, supported by his wife Sara, who is a teacher in Science and Te Reo at Richmond View School. Each of the congregations he ministers to has accommodated challenges following the 2013 Seddon earthquake – and John’s impressed. “These are very, very resilient people,” he says. “They are used to dealing with whatever nature throws at them.” In Awatere, the congregation meets in people’s homes and in Kekerengu, up to 20 people meet monthly in St Georges, probably the smallest church in New Zealand. The Presbyterian St Andrews in Seddon where the Joint Venture group was meeting, was destroyed in the 2013 earthquake. And the Awatere Early Learning Centre had already leased the Anglican church, making the congregation homeless. So they picked up a generous offer to share with the Roman Catholic church, which survived the earthquake well. (In Ward, the Catholic church was damaged so the same sharing arrangement was made there - but vice versa.) The congregations have enjoyed sharing morning tea and some combined services and the Seddon group will continue those links despite moving back into their own church. That can happen because on March 31 the learning centre moved in its own purpose-built building and handed the now beautifully-renovated building back to the church. The big celebration to mark moving back will be held in May with Bishop Steve presiding.

Time to give the home a good spruce up?

When Peter Meikle was five years young he developed a very bad stammer, was immensely shy and found communicating difficult. By chance his mother (who was an extremely gifted seamstress and couturier) did some work for a client in Hamilton who happened to be a speech therapist and she offered to help work with young Peter overcoming his impediment. Theatre in 1960s New Zealand, he says, was driven by the British Drama League. One of their objectives was to host drama festivals throughout New Zealand and nearly all of the small town and community theatres entered plays in these festivals. “Hamilton and its radius also hosted a junior festival and in 1962 I put my hand up to direct a play. It was called ‘The Confutation of Wisdom’ by Frank Sladen Smith and it was a revelation for me. Design, look, sound, visual impact, performance, costumes, textual shape, rhythm, pace, energy, interpretation – these were all my responsibility and I had absolutely no idea.” To Peter’s surprise, the play won the junior festival ‘best production’ that year and he was hooked. The discovery of performance was embedded when he was cast in a musical ‘Music in The Air’ staged by Hamilton Operatic Society – which incidentally was the opening production in the newly completed Founders Theatre – now sadly condemned as a building – but in its day a fantastic theatre. “I was a 15-year-old breaking boy soprano on a painted mountain with footlights, flood lights and follow spots. Does it get any better? Not a stammer in sight.” Many shows followed. He wrote, directed, and starred in many of them because well, he could. “I moved to Auckland and was

taken on as a pupil of Lois Paynter and John Thompson and absolutely crushed speech and drama. “I did it all. Acted, directed, designed, stage managed, wardrobe, lighting, sound - an extraordinary training ground learning the craft of theatre with many of the best practitioners in the business as mentors.” His theatre resume took off when in his early 20’s he joined the then fledgling North Shore Operatic Society and directed ‘La Belle Helene’ ‘The Gondoliers’ ‘Calamity Jane’ in quick succession and really learnt the craft of directing musicals. “I worked with Auckland Operatic in the now tragically demolished ‘His Majesty’s Theatre’ on a legendary production of the ‘The King and I’ and this set the path of a journey that has been hugely rewarding and fulfilling.

“It’s been an absolute joy and priviledge to work with the children ”

From there it was to Australia to study production and then to London for further study and work. Strolling around old Southampton presenting scenes from Henry V in actual historical locations is a never to be forgotten memory as part of a company of professional actors.” A stint as an intern at Glyndebourne Festival Opera developed a lifelong passion for Opera and a huge respect for music and a stint as Artistic Director in the Lake District directing Opera in the open on the shores of Lake Windermere. He acknowledges he continues to learn and says there are significant

people who have influenced, coloured and mentored him. “In this current production of Les Misérables it has been an absolute joy and privilege to work with the children in the production. Their honesty, enthusiasm and unconditional trust are awesome,” he says. “Their outlook and commentary has been at times uplifting and their sheer joy of being involved has certainly been amongst the many highlights.” Peter is transparent when he says it is his role as director to shape the commentary and emotional outcome of the story without prejudice, using the tools at hand. “The vision that I first wrote down all those months ago has been the energy that I bring to each rehearsal. I share with the cast, orchestra and crew and they interpret this through performance. It is the definition of the relationship between director and company.” Set during the post Napoleonic era following the French revolution Les Misérables reflects the breakdown and struggle of social order in a nation torn apart from lingering conflict. Following the dual stories of Javert and Valjean, whose journeys diverge and travel on the same trajectory, they both finally achieve a level of peace that ends in death. “The show dramatizes the heroes’ relentless pursuit by conscience, through their instinctive awareness and meaning of God and the importance of the Church and the belief in the goodness of man and mankind. “Watching the development of the ABC Café scenes and the tragic consequences has been perhaps the most compelling aspects of the production – it resonates with the dreadful conflict currently in the Ukraine and its impact is so much more visceral for me as a director.” Peter says the past two years have been hard on all community ac-

Peter Meikle is the director and vision behind Blenheim Musical Theatre’s production of Les Misérables at the ASB Theatre next month. He took time out of a busy rehearsal schedule to explain to Chris Valli who he is and why theatre, let alone Les Misérables, is important to him and the community.

Director Peter Meikle says it will be a thrilling night on May 18 when every single thread and element of 12 months' work comes to life with its audience who will share and savour the emotional roller coaster that is Les Misérables.

He says to be able to celebrate and salute a group of people who have ‘given up a major part of their lives’ for 30 weeks to be part of one of the greatest stage musicals. To present its powerful compelling story of triumph over adversity is a glorious way of giving a very French finger to the past two years. “It will be a thrilling night on May 18 when every single thread

DO THE MAHI GET THE TREATS: Participants in a 10 week boot camp at the Stadium sweat it out one last time last week.

A Stadium 2000 ‘boot camp’ has left a positive, transformative impression on Blenheim fitness enthusiasts. Normally when the word boot camp is used there are perceptions of a disciplinary programme in which participants are forced to engage in a rigidly structured routine. There were certainly some small doses of discipline, albeit between friendly, inspiring words of encouragement for the 45 individuals who took part. The 20-session boot camp started on February 1 and finished last Thursday. It was led by Health and Fitness Manager Rick White and Jo Hawker, Exercise Consultant and Personal Trainer. Ably led and assisted by Personal Trainers Nir Haz Paz and Georgie Johnson the transformation course of outdoor group training sessions had a few barriers along the way including Covid isolation and harvest commitments. Participant Simon Popham says the 10 weeks were well organised and allowed him to test his own limits while interacting with all members of the Blenheim community. “It was great to blow out the cobwebs twice

a week for the last 10 weeks, despite the 6am starts. There was great variety and intensity whilst mixing with like-minded people.” For teaching learning assistant Racheal Kenyon boot camp provided the impetus and social interaction to be challenged and to discover new personal fitness limits while having fun. She says she had wanted to get into a regular exercise routine for a while but kept losing motivation. However, when a couple of friends from Les Miserables (a show she is currently involved in) signed up for it, she decided to bite the bullet and join them. Racheal says she learnt many things about herself over the 10 weeks. None more so than being capable of getting up early and changing routines. She admits when she had to self-isolate for a couple of weeks due to Covid, she really missed the boot camp. Rick says the course was about taking it back to the days of sweating it out early morning, leaving on a high, and feeling well prepped for the day because of exercise. Many are moving on to the REBOOT course that begins next week led by Nir Har Paz. Contact nirharpaz.pt@gmail.com for details. The 10 week course is available to eveyone.

Campaign to support local business By Chris Valli

The time to support local business is now according to a local businessman. A campaign called ‘Support Local Marlborough’ is the brainchild of David Forman from Imagine Signs Blenheim. Imagine Signs, is a signwriting business in Timandra Place and has been operating locally for the past nine years. They have partnered with The Hits Marlborough who are organising the entries & prizes for the six week campaign. The campaign runs from Monday, April 11 and covers Blenheim, Picton, Renwick, Wairau Valley and Havelock. Anyone making a purchase from a participating business will enter a weekly prize draw

to win numerous prizes donated by local businesses. David says he has had the idea for a while, yet after current red light restrictions remained in place last week, he felt the time to act was now. “Over a year ago we made stickers that were just ‘Support Locally-Owned Businesses’ and hundreds of businesses got them and they are still on many shop windows. This time we wanted to go bigger and give out prizes to locals from local businesses. “We get asked by a lot of community organisations to sponsor teams/events and without our customers supporting us that just isn’t possible. So the idea is to get locals back out there into their business community and support

Local Covid figures The latest Covid figures from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, show a downward trend and are currently reported as follows: Blenheim recorded 82 new cases, with 1102 classified as active – up to 10 days since first reported. There are 3195 recovered cases, making a total of 4297. In Picton, there are four new

cases, with 75 active and 345 recovered, making a total of 420. “Marlborough other” figures are seven new cases, 180 current and 505 recovered, a total of 685. The total figures for Nelson Marlborough are 275 newly reported cases on April 11, 3940 active, with 15,826 recovered, 19,766 in total.

those businesses by buying local. We decided to invest in this ourselves as when our customers win, we win.” David says after approaching other local companies to get it off the ground, it was The Hits Marlborough who was the only one who said yes and made it happen. He says local businesses need help now – not in two weeks or even two months. As a local businessman the campaign is important to him, especially for small businesses, who have had it really hard. “Most people out there don’t really understand that to run a business is your lifestyle, you don’t go home from it, you take it with you. Your staff are really important to you and without customers, it can’t work. “Two years of Covid have been really hard, but the Red Traffic Light setting upped it into the extremely hard basket. Yes, some businesses have done well, but many are really struggling. “If locals want local businesses to survive, the only way is to support them. Most local businesses are passionate about the community they live in and regularly support it in many ways.” The reaction from those involved already is they are happy that something is finally being done. “They’re keen to be a part of it and really thankful that someone is actually trying to encourage locals back to supporting their local businesses.

David Forman from Imagine Signs says the idea is to get locals back into their business community and support those businesses by buying local. "When our customers win, we win.”

David says there are thousands of dollars of prizes, supplied by local businesses and more still coming in. Vouchers, gift baskets, coffee packs, fishing rods and care packages. He says local businesses have supplied them all and they can be won by anyone shopping locally.

Customers can shop or spend money at any Marlborough business then enter online with a copy of their receipt or invoice. This includes trade and service businesses etc. as well as retail. Shoppers need to upload their receipt to thehits.co.nz to be in the draw to win a share of the prizes.

Be in to win!

Marlborough’s Ride Forever Promotion has less than six weeks to go! Since early February we have followed the journeys of four riders who took a Ride Forever course for the first time. Gavin went on a Gold course, Sonya and Bill a Silver, and Tanya a Bronze course. Here are just some of the things they had to say: “Professional training is so good! I thought having to go on an eight-hour course would be so long, but it just flew by!” “Things like emergency braking. You just don’t go out to practise emergency braking any other time.” “I feel a lot more confident using

Creating Order By Chris Valli

can be securely stored electronically and the paper originals then destroyed. “Archivists need to be computer-literate as we write appraisal reports for clients with recommendations as to what should happen to records we’ve examined (immediate destruction, temporary storage for income tax records etc, and permanent storage for important records such as official board minutes etc). I also create an inventory of all records that are going to be retained in Excel.” One of the more unique experiences in her job was when she worked at National Archives when photocopying files for researchers. “The coroner’s inquests were the worst as they contained police evidence photographs from about the 1930s on (we had to copy the photos too) and some were really gruesome. I once opened up a police criminal file from the 1920s and was met with a rusty cut-throat razor that had been used as a murder weapon. Prior to the current divorce law, adultery was one of the major grounds for requesting a divorce. So some of the older divorce files contain photographs of husbands or wives caught in bed with someone else (looking very startled usually) to be used as evidence in court. There must have been a lot of work for private detectives back then.” Wendy says she has worked in some interesting locations including a draughty attic (the records had feathers and bird poop on them), a records rescue job from a leaky 1920s garage (the records had mould damage and some needed drying out) and an old basement where nothing had been dusted for many decades. “I had to actually dust the files. The nicest location was a job I did for the Todd family (New Zealand’s richest family) at Todd House in Wellington. It had spectacular harbour views.” Wendy says the best part of her job is the satisfaction of creating order from chaos. The more messy and complicated the task, the more she enjoys it. Her longest project took her six months working 20 hours per week. “The most enjoyable records I’ve archived were those of the Rt. Hon Sir Owen Woodhouse who was the architect of our ACC system and a highly respected Court of Appeal judge. The records covered his entire career as a justice; the 1966 Royal Commission that resulted in ACC being established; and his personal correspondence and papers. By the time I finished I had enormous respect for him and what he had achieved.”

Wendy Harnett is an information professional in every context of the definition. She also advises local and central governUNDER NEW MANAGEMENT ment departments, companies and other See Conrad and the team organisations about which records they should keep, store temporarily or can safely destroy (by examining physical records or electronic filing systems, talking to staff and conducting background research). Wendy moved to Blenheim as a child when her father, David Stubbs, became the Methodist minister here. After finishing college she worked for a couple of years and then moved to Christchurch to do a B.A. in Classics. A move to Wellington in 1993 saw Wendy Your local specialists in join (the then-named) National Archives as an Screen Printing & Embroidery archivist-in-training. “It was my dream job and I haven’t tired of it since. I worked for National Archives (now Archives New Zealand) and later as a contractor there for over 23 years.” After joining National Archives she was given extensive training in all aspects of archives work, sort of like an apprenticeship. “Back then there was no New Zealand based archives and records training so if you wanted a professional qualification you had to go to Enquire Now (03) 572 8075 New South Wales or further afield. The de facto 60 High St, Renwick entry qualification was a bachelor’s degree or www.newmangraphics.co.nz higher. Now there are professional qualifications available via several tertiary institutions.” Last March she moved back to Blenheim to live with her husband and says she is loving it New Zealand’s leading here. gardening this week What to do with leaves: By Wally Richards For some home owners, autumn leaf fall is a curse, just another chore to rake them up and clear the gutters. For gardeners, leaf fall is a blessing and they gladly collect the leaves to make leaf mould. Leaf mould is excellent for improving soil, also as a lawn conditioner and mulch over gardens. It can be used in seed raising mixes and potting mixes.Leaf mould is easy to make, its free with a little effort on your part and its a good substitute for peat moss in your gardens. If you have bare vegetable or flower gardens either leave the leaves as a cover over the area or place a good layer over the gardens yourself. Sprinkle garden Lime over the leaves then spray them with Thatch Busta which will help break down the mat of leaves, getting the gardens ready for spring. This cover of the leaves will prevent a lot of weeds from growing in the bare gardens. Now to make your own leaf mould with what is left or what you can collect from else where. The fast way is to lay some leaves over a flat area of lawn an inch or two thick and the with your rotary mower adjusted to the lowest setting run over the leaves with your catcher on. Repeat this with another layer of leaves and so on. When your catcher is ready to empty, open a black plastic rubbish bag and put a few handfuls of leaves

and any grass clippings into the bottom of the bag. Sprinkle over the leaves a handful of garden lime and then spray with Thatch Busta at 10 ml per litre. (If you don’t have Thatch Busta but have Mycorrcin, then use it at 15mls per litre.) Now add a few more handfuls of mashed up leaves and repeat the lime and spraying. Press down when bag is full to compress the material and then you can add a lot more. Finally when the bag is full enough to still be able to tie off, tie the top then with a small nail or thin blade screw driver punch lots of small holes all over the bag. Toss the bag into a sunny out of the way area and leave for a month or so. After a few weeks pick up the bag, give it a shake and put it back with a different side facing upwards. Repeat this about every month or so.The bag will appear to have more space in it as the material coverts to leaf mould. Within about 6 months you should have a lovely crumbly product that smells good. The sprinkling of lime is important as the leaves that fall are acidic and you want them sweet so the bacteria will work breaking them down to mould. The Thatch Busta or Mycorrcin is also very important as they supply the food that increases the microbe populations which speeds up the process.

If you haven’t planted your spring bulbs yet then you should get cracking now. If you are planting a bed of bulbs then sprinkle the area with Wallys Unlocking the Soil, blood & bone and Wallys BioPhos. Rake the products into the bed then plant your bulbs. Remember to place the tallest growing spring flowers at the back or if a bed in the open place tall growing ones in the centre. The shortest growing will be in the front.Rather than having a bare bed for a while till the spring bulbs emerge, plant some alyssum and lobelia seedlings. They will make a nice ground cover over the winter and a lovely back drop for your flowering bulbs. Don’t forget to protect tender plants from frost. Spray with Vaporgard and if there happens to be two or more frosts in a row, night after night then cover plants with frost cloth or sack/ newspaper. Plants like citrus trees in open ground that detest wet feet should be sprayed with Wallys Perfection to prevent root rots in winter. Remove all mulches as they prevent drying of wet soil which causes root rots and diseases during winter. Leaving mulches on the soil often leads to losses of plants that cant handle wet feet. RE: Name change

The naked truth In England it is still an offence to coerce someone into marriage through the use of perfumes and powder. How lucky we are our top regime refrain from this divisive tactic, fronting au naturale. Imagine darlings, what nasties could be hidden by them ever using luminous sphere cosmetics!

BOOM BOOM Every morning it’s a constant BOOM BOOM and yelling to the top of the lungs saying Go, Go, Go, push, push, push. F45 have some thought for the people with the loud music you play at 5am every morning. EVERY MORNING YOU BLAST LOUD MUSIC. I don’t think your neighbours would like it if one was to come down your street every morning at 5am blasting loud music…keep it down or start at a later time.

RE: Russian War plane Get a life! You don’t mention the German and Russian fighters at the warbirds displays? You can’t change history!

I couldn’t agree more. This so called most transparent government ever are so busy implementing change by stealth that they are alienating and dividing the population. The alienation is coming through clearly racist policies like Three Waters, He Pua Pua, separate Maori health authorities etc. Following from this is the division of people along racial lines. This government is not offering anything positive to the population and hopefully the sheep who blindly follow the Liar-in-chief and her socialist cadre wake up before the damage is irreversible.

What’s a name Hey folks, ever leave to go north? Politicians say that ‘Transmission Gully’ or ‘SH1’ is too hard to get your tongue around! Hilarious! So we proudly entered the politically correct name into our new GPS – ‘Te Ara Nui o Te Rangihaeata’ also adding Highway and Motorway. I could not even get my educated tongue around it, and my latest GPS had a hernia and sent us global!

RE: Buses Just to say too, NOBODY is trying to deceive ANYBODY. To insinuate that shows us your own ignorance.

Name change Totally agree with every word Mr Barrowman wrote in last week’s SUN to the editor and the Name Change comments in txt talk. I have been saying for a long time how can they just carry on calling our country Aotearoa and slowly brainwashing with name changes on the TV, radio, paper etc. We are an ENGLISH speaking country and we need a referendum NOW.

COVID death rates Where do the reported covid death rates come from? 1 April 2022 there were 314 reported. 2 April another 23 reported. To my way of adding that is a total of 347. No I must have gone to the wrong school because the total reported was 378!!

Dog barking If the dog’s barking it maybe for a reason. Maybe the kids next door have annoyed them. Or teasing them. They are known for this. I’d have a barking dog any day over unruly bad behaved kids where their parents think they are the best ever. Bark collars are not the best results. Stop being a Karen.

RE: Dog collars Yes, they are cruel, they are used by lazy and uncaring dog owners who don’t want to find out why their dog is barking. Biggest reason is boredom followed by someone or something annoying them. Take the dog for long walks and spend time training them. The other plan, find a new home for it where it will be cared for.

Hardships Let’s forget about our own hardships for a moment…what about WW3 in Ukraine. They need the world’s help. Think about them before putting your hand out for welfare.

Traffic island Why don’t the council build a traffic island or pedestrian crossing on Main Street, with the heavy traffic, it is impossible to cross the street especially when you dropped your car at one garage for repairs and have to cross the street to walk home? Just so dangerous and stressful for both pedestrians and car drivers.

Wellington campers Recently went camping with a group of friends – they had these decorative multi-coloured lights hanging over the road at every other intersection. Any ideas what these are for? Never seen them around Blenheim.

Appalling roads After going for a ride through Queen Charlotte Drive, I now understand how the government aim to achieve zero road deaths by 2050. Keep the roads in such poor condition, that no one will want to use them. No road users – no deaths! Appalling road conditions in Marlborough. I don’t get it, so many road works, yet the roads are in a worse state than ever. Our geo, rates and taxes must all end up in a big hole in the road.

Cheers to cafe’s Big thumbs up to all our cafe’s and restaurants during these trying times, you desrve our support . Keep up the good work.

Talk of the week Market The new Saturday morning market up at Brayshaw Park is a way better spot for a market. More parking too and it had a real buzz. Cheers to whoever started it – way to go.

Go figure Essential worker tests positive for Covid. Seven days off work and still tests positive but has to go back to work, still feeling terrible. Crazy rules and regulations. Just spreads the virus around more. If sick stay at home, it’s a no brainer.

Grape trucks Grape trucks that park at Lansdowne parking lot, how about not idling your trucks all night. You’re damn ignorant of families that are trying to sleep at night. Are all these trucks allowed to park there Council? And have their motors going late at night in residential areas?

F45 Tooo Loud F45 every morning it’s too LOUD… have some thought for the people…EVERY MORNING IT’S 5am bang, bang and yelling, EVERY MORNING…

Call for action over empty spaces in Picton By Maya Hart

An iconic building in the centre of Picton has been sitting empty – for the most part – for at least four years. Now the community wants something done with it or the site. A former BP gas station is also sitting empty, and it’s on the main road people use when they come off the ferry. The two buildings, on the corner of Wellington St and Waikawa Rd, and on Auckland St, were highlighted in the Marlborough District Council’s CBD Health Check, released in February this year. The health check is undertaken every two years, with this year’s highlighting it was the second time the buildings were empty. The report was presented to councillors by Marlborough District Council summer intern William Macdonald who said there was an opportunity to modernise the buildings, in line with the “desires” of the Picton community. The owners of the second-hand store were told by the overseas owners of the building in 2015 their lease was being terminated. They had operated the shop on the Waikawa Rd-Wellington St corner site for 15-years, and said at the time they did not see the eviction coming. Prior to this, the building was a Mobil service station. The new owners of the building, as of 2019, had plans for the site, but those were shelved by the Covid-19 pandemic. The building currently has one tenant. Marlborough Sounds ward councillor Nadine Taylor asked the council’s strategic planning and economic development manager Neil Henry, if other councils addressed buildings like this, despite being in private ownership. “I entirely agree that it stood out to me in the report that these year-on-year trends, those two buildings are just sitting there sticking out like sore toes if you will, and the community wants something done,” Taylor said. Henry said the council was due to undertake a “piece of strategic planning for Picton”. “In my mind that is part of that, so looking at not just the publicly owned spaces and buildings,” Henry said. He said they needed to let the “market” know what the wider plan was for the town, and what investment could be put into these buildings. “That’s what councils can do, some also directly work with the private sector to

directly market the spaces,” he said. “We know our town is changing and that’s an opportunity for the market.” He said it could provide an opportunity for the owners to capitalise on the buildings. He said the cruise ship market was likely to come back to Picton, and both sites are prominent in the town, so agreed they needed to be addressed. Picton SportsWorld manager Laurie Stevenson said both sites were in an “ideal” location. He said while the empty shops did not “really bother” him, it was not good for the town’s overall appearance. He said the second-hand shop was on a “prime” site that should be developed. “What do you do? Do you bowl it and start again, or do put another hotel in the town in hope of the tourists coming back. More development in the town would no doubt cause more people to come,” Stevenson said. “We have enough food outlets at the moment, it’s crazy that people are drawn to those outlets, but if there’s more people coming, it could create more business to the town.” Atlantis Backpackers owner Shiera Hudson, whose business was across the road from the BP, said if “she won the lotto” she would turn the BP into an arts centre. “It would be so fabulous. That place is huge it is enormous. It could be phenomenal,” Hudson said. She said it was “sad” both buildings weren’t used any more. Picton Environment Centre premises manager Ailie Suzuki said developing the old BP could be helpful to draw more people to their building. “For us, because Port Marlborough sponsor our site here, even though it would be awesome to have somewhere a little more exposed to human traffic, we’re really stoked to be sponsored here,” Suzuki said. “So when it comes to the place across here if it was utilised better to draw more traffic in this direction that would be good. Otherwise, it’s kind of a bit desolate.” She said the second-hand shop should be better utilised. “I know things are changing, with the ebbs and flows of tourism with Covid affecting things, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming years.” Le Cafe employees Melisa Birina and Whiro Walker thought it was a shame to not have a second-hand shop any more. Birina said it was sad to see it had not been developed – given the opportunities the building had. Walker said it was a “cool building”, that could be social housing or a community centre – which were both needed for Picton. Public Interest Journalism funded through NZ On Air.

sports talk With Jacob Page

Tiger makes his mark at Augusta without victory There is an ability for Tiger Woods to turn grown men into little boys, giddy with excitement at the slightest prospect of him hitting a golf ball. Make no mistake, Tiger, who is well past his mesmerising prime, is still the biggest name in golf. I believe he is the single most important person to their sport in the world. When Tiger plays, like he did at the Masters at Augusta over the weekend, grown men become excited as if they were children hearing the Mr Whippy ice cream song on a hot summer day. A year ago, Tiger was in a hospital bed after a high-speed car crash of

his own doing, on Monday he was wearing his traditional red in the fourth round at Augusta. While many golf fans would have loved to see him pull off a miracle win at the 86th Masters, it was always a lofty and unrealistic expectation. The leg he badly injured in the car crash combined with little to no competitive golf eventually outdid the 46-year-old. Woods limped around over the final two rounds, eventually finishing at +13 in a tie for 47th. Tiger admitted after the event he has days where he “just doesn’t want to do anything” because he’s sore. He said after his fourth round that

the multiple ice baths and overall recovery work he had to do “sucked”. To me, it was a fantastic effort for Tiger to make the cut, I’m not a pom-pom cheerleader fan of Tiger, but golf is 1000 times better for him playing and if you want proof, you just have to look at the photo of the gallery of people watching Tiger’s practice rounds at Augusta. People simply cannot get enough of Tiger Woods. The golfers today are better, hit further, putt more precisely because that is the level Tiger elevated the game to in his prime. To see Tiger play golf is a sporting joy which should be appreciated by all fans.
