Kiwibank hero homeless By Chris Valli

A Marlborough Kiwibank Local Hero recipient is now homeless and sleeping in her car. Mary Hart, 67, was recognised in November 2019 for the work she did in the Marlborough community for families dealing with Child Youth and Family (CYFS/Oranga Tamariki). She was also involved with PANIC (Positive Answers Needed in Crisis), a support group for those involved with Oranga Tamariki. Their role was to support families who have had children taken and placed into care and who are working within the guidelines and conditions laid down in the Family Group Conference between themselves and the Ministry with the object of regaining the care of their children. Mary had been living with her 40-year-old daughter, in a two bedroom house in Witherlea. The daughter has had an ongoing battle with domestic violence and drug abuse including methamphetamine. After a failed relationship, her daughter says that she went on a downward spiral making some bad choices. She says she still ‘dabbles in ritalin’ and is a poly addict. A poly-addict is when an individual has multiple addictions at once. The daughter has four children - all girls, aged 19, 14, 13 and 10. Two of them are currently in care through the Open Home Foundation, a network of Christian foster families as an alternative for children placed in Department of Social Welfare/WINZ care. Both Mary and her daughter agree that their relationship is strained and has been for a number of years. When spoken to recently by the Sun Newspaper, Mary’s daughter said ‘Mum and me haven’t and didn’t get on.’ However, she added ‘I don’t want her on the streets.’ A home inspection was done by Housing First and her daughter was given a breach of her tenancy notice for smoking in the house. Housing First services are for people who have been homeless for 12 months or more OR four episodes of homelessness over a three year period with mental health and/or addiction issues. “We were then told that I could stay for three weeks and provided there were no domestic events it would again be looked at, we were also told this did not mean that I would be able to stay longer, just

I believe I still have a lot of life in me and a lot I can give back to my community, although this sleeping rough is going to shorten my lifespan a lot as one of my health conditions is COPD and I am prone to chest infections.”

Hands of the next generation By Chris Valli

A mix of planting conservation mindedness and a growing appreciation of Te Reo and kaitiaki has been at the fore at Fairhall School recently. Crafted and gifted by parent and sculptor Gerad Verkaaik, a sculpture named kaitiaki sits in pride of place at the entrance to Te Whare Kahikatea. Gerard says the opportunity came from a request from Principal Steve Crockett to present a piece of ‘greenstone’ to gift to the school. “The stone was actually serpentine, of no commercial value but did prompt the idea of using a suitable serpentine river-washed boulder to be the centre of an ecologically themed sculpture for the school’s entrance way.” Gerard says the concept he came up with was a rock which represented the earth in the hands of the next generation, linking it to the strong ‘bi-cultural vibe’ of the predominantly pakeha school. “This is the generation that will have to do the hard yards of making this nation truly bi-cultural, honouring the Treaty and radically changing the culture of resource usage.” When asked what words would go best with the sculpture, a suggestion from one of the children, ‘The Earth is in our Hands’ seemed apt, especially around the principle

At long last! This writer was supposed to join the 100 plus ‘droppers’ on May 28/29 as part of the Graeme Dingle Foundation ‘Drop for Youth Marlborough’ fundraiser where locals were asked to set a target of at least $1000. All funds raised support the work of the Graeme Dingle Foundation in transforming young lives within the Marlborough region. After a five week delay due to being involved with Les Misérables late May and flight maintenance for the Motueka based skydive operator, Saturday turned on a cracker! The blurb on the Abel Tasman skydive site reads; jumping from 9,000 feet, you will enjoy

a 10-minute scenic flight, up to 20 seconds of freefall and then three to five minutes under the parachute. They weren’t wrong. The obligatory health and safety sign off and weigh-in provided some, um entertaining chat (where does one put his insulin pump and do I really weigh that much? Shouldn’t have had the extra pint or pie this week). I found it fascinating when a fellow jumper/tourist conversed with his colleague and inquired, ‘isn’t this place named after the Dutch explorer?’ History and context indeed. Needless to say, I don’t think the voyager had parachuting on his mind when he reached this part of the world in 1642. The crew at Abel Tasman

certainly know their craft and one would expect them to - after all one’s life is literally in their hands. The day was ideal. No wind. Winter sun on your face at its best and the perfect day to leave one’s comfort zone and add to one’s resume of ‘crazy stuff to do’. There was no irony lost when the chute opened that the Tom Petty lyric ‘Free Falling’ came into my head as I was chatting with my mate attached to the chute like we were long lost buddies in the defence force. God he was good. Comforting. Reassurement. Safety. In some ways, the lyrics, ‘I wanna write her name in the sky, I’m gonna free fall out into nothing, gonna leave this world

‘Super scary’ crime in our community By Glenise Dreaver

“Normal people don’t know this stuff.” Rob Veale, back in Blenheim where he was born, is a former Police Inspector and government adviser on crime. Now of Wellington, he’s a man on a mission travelling the country educating health and social workers, Police and other community organisations on the realities of section 189A of the Crimes Act. That’s about Family Harm - strangulation and intimate partner violence. “Actually, family violence is a misnomer,” he says, adding that the problem reached beyond the family situation. He’s working not only to increase awareness of how common the crime of strangulation is, and the unrecognised physical and mental damage it does, but to ensure that cases are successfully prosecuted. First of all, he told workshop members, it was crucial to name this behaviour correctly. “There’s no such thing as attempted strangulation. And don’t call it choking either. It’s strangulation, and it’s an attack on the brain.” The 27 representatives of community organisations were warned that serious damage may be initially invisible, but Rob’s graphic diagrams and photos demonstrated how and why

life-threatening injuries can worsen over ensuing days, weeks and months. Not only that, while a woman may not initially be killed by a strangulation attack, the chances of her then being killed increased sevenfold if a male had earlier demonstrated strangulation behaviour. His data showed not only how common this hidden crime was, but what advocates needed to know as they act for the women who present to them. The questions to draw out the information needed for successful prosecution - and the need to ensure that police record all the details of an attack were discussed. Rob says there had been

very few successful prosecutions since the Act was passed. Yet strangulation often preceded a serious physical attack which may leave obvious marks or broken bones. That means the strangulation factor is overlooked, especially as the symptoms of that include disorientation and confusion. He has a final appeal. “If someone you care about has been strangled within the past 48 hours, and has voice changes, swallowing changes or breathing changes, encourage them to see a doctor immediately. You might think you have time to sort something out. You don’t. It’s super scary.”

BBC at Sawmill Studios By Chris Valli

The Marlborough filmmaking industry continues to thrive with a shoot at the weekend for an upcoming comedy. The British Broadcasting Corporal was filmed at Blenheim’s Sawmill Studio in Waters Ave, (former site of Timberlink) and involved a cast and crew of about 20 people from the Top of the South. Director/Producer Justin Eade says the concept came about through various ideas around the British Pathē Newsreel-type voiceover men during World War 2. He says the voiceover was always very posh, upbeat, positive, and over-the-top patriotic. Justin says he came up with the synopsis of what if the guy doing those voiceovers was actually a depressed, cockney alcoholic, defeatist, and living in a run-down bedsit in the East End? “Somehow he’d been co-opted into this job but the juxtaposition between the two could be quite comical. Although it’s comedy, I guess it also makes a serious point or two about misinformation and the ‘fronts’ we all present to the world, when the reality is something different.” Justin says the casting of the two actors came about from previous association in local films Northspur and War Paint. He says after working with so many people from Marlborough during previous filming the relationships have carried over to the BBC. “Having worked with Jaemes Churchward before, and seeing him as a talented actor who just needs more opportunities to show what he can do, I immediately thought of Jaemes for the lead, cockney Bert Withers. And having worked with Geoff Anderson before too, I thought he’d make a good Captain Morley, the Svengali-type figure from the War Office co-opting poor old Bert into

making these voiceover recordings ‘for King and country’. Both Jaemes and Geoff worked hard in rehearsals and I thought they turned in superb performances.” Justin says they shot ‘War Paint’ there with a studio set build, and also came back there for a three month set build for the BBC. He says one of the joys of making this film has been to see how the set came together over three months through Roger’s (Wadham production designer and art director) expertise and also with an art department team of Tracy Bartlett, Francesca Cox, Shane Sutherland, Kenny Holdaway and Geoff Anderson. “They have been beautifully reconstructed in an old timber yard building, a 1940 East London bedsit complete with all sorts of period detail. It’s a real feature piece of the film.” The film was shot by local cinematographer Daniel Wye, assisted by actress and crew member Peata Panoho. “I knew we’d get a really good result in terms of the film’s technicals. Stu McCormick assisted with lighting and between him and Daniel, they did an incredible job. Most of the film will be in black and white, to reflect the period and match in with the B/W newsreel film.” Justin says the film took two days to shoot (July 2 and 3) and will take approximately two months to edit, by local editor Rachael Meiklejohn. It will then be entered into Festivals, including the Top of the South Film Festival, by late August. “It’s a truly ‘Top of the South’ collaboration between Blenheim and Nelson, and it’s always very good to build those ties. The atmosphere was very convivial and collaborative. Everyone was grateful to have a place to come to make movies in a studio environment, thanks to the generosity of Rick Osborne and the work of Screen Marlborough, developing Sawmill Studios.”

Annual Plan adopted and rates set for 2022-23 Council has adopted its 2022-23 Annual Plan and confirmed a rates increase of 5.39 per cent for the coming year. Mayor John Leggett said Council had made good use of its Infrastructure Upgrade and Depreciation Reserves and had allocated $4.3M from its Covid-19 Rates Relief Reserve, which had kept the rates increase down. “Our budget for the coming year maintains current levels of service, with a $83.4M capital expenditure programme focused on delivering core infrastructure, our highest ever level.” “As I said at the beginning of the public consultation process in April, this year’s rates increase is mainly driven by external factors - inflation, new Government requirements and higher labour and supply chain costs.” He thanked the 78 submitters who took the time to participate this year. “It’s always challenging to manage

the community’s desire for increased levels of service and project funding whilst also keeping a lid on rates increases, a task that is much more difficult in the current financial environment,” Mayor Leggett said. “Council is very conscious of the impacts of Covid-19 and general cost increases on people’s pockets. We have sought to keep this year’s rates increase to a minimum and tightened our belts, supporting a relatively small number of requests brought to us by the public.” Most of the Council’s new initiatives proposed in its consultation document were supported by public submissions and are funded from Reserves, therefore not impacting on rates. In addition Council agreed to support some new requests subject to additional project funding being secured. A number of other requests were referred to committees for further consideration. The new rate came into effect on 1 July.

New Chinese Consul General visits Marlborough A Chinese delegation visited Marlborough recently, marking the 50th anniversary of China-New Zealand diplomatic ties. The visit was designed to give a general picture on the two countries cooperation and explore future opportunities. New Consul General Madame He Ying, Consul Xu Li and Consul Cai Runyan met with industry leaders including Bob Richards from VinWizard, David Tyney from Viscosity and Aaron Pannell from Marlborough Oysters.

The Chinese group also met with Council officials including Mayor John Leggett and later toured NMIT/Marlborough Research Centre. Council’s Manager of Strategic Planning and Economic Development, Neil Henry described the visit as successful saying Madame He Ying noted Marlborough had plenty to offer including primary products (wine, seafood, forestry, other food) plus technology (wine and aquaculture tech), specialised education and tourism.

Passionate about cycling Blenheim cyclist Callum Saunders was recently named in the New Zealand Men’s track sprint team for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Before leaving for Switzerland on July 10 for a pre-games camp for two weeks he caught up with Chris Valli. Callum Saunders liked to explore at a young age and realised the most effective way to do this was by using a bike. He grew up one kilometre from his neighbours and along with best mate Hugo Smith (son of National MP Stuart Smith) quickly found it was a lot easier jumping on bikes and riding to each other’s places than it was pestering their folks for a ride and ultimately faster than walking. Callum has fond memories growing up near Tempello Station where there was an ‘open gate’ policy to go riding and going out beyond their parents’ eye and the constraints of their respective properties. He admits he’s always had a passion and drive for ‘two wheels’ and always had a yearning for the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, which the later he wrote down on paper. “It was the 2006 (Melbourne) Commonwealth Games and I remember watching it on TV, I think I was 11 years old. It wasn’t until my early days at high school that I started to get into the swing of things and win some races.”

“Everything we do in our training as sprinters is full gas.” He says he was lucky growing up in Marlborough where there was a strong contingent of junior riders ably assisted by Chris Ginders, who was recognised by Cycling New Zealand in 2016 with the Champion of Secondary School Sport Award’ from the New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Council. The award recognised those who have been involved in secondary schools sport for more than 15 years and who have contributed beyond a local level while showing leadership in the secondary school sports sector. Callum says Ginders influence was

instrumental in his own pathway to cycling and the success that has since followed. “Chris’ philosophy was that it had to be driven by us and we had to be the ones that drove it. Good coaches provide athletes with a toolbox but they shouldn’t be the ones holding your hands while they’re using the tools. I’ve always used that analogy. There’s no point doing this sport if you are doing it for somebody else.” He says from a tangible perspective the motivation in cycling is all about the speed which he describes as a unique, special feeling. From a philosophical perspective track cycling provides the growth and challenge of pushing himself internally. “Everything we do in our training as sprinters is full gas, we hardly ever hold anything back. We use a motor bike as a training tool (to follow) to create a draft.” He reflects on one scenario in 2016 in training where a wheel skipped out from under him. “Someone hit the fence on the inside as they were ready to go up on the track. As I was coming at 80 kph and was right in the path of the motorbike.” A self-confessed goal setter, Callum says ‘breaking through the ceiling’ and challenging himself is the intrinsic incentive. Winning the UCI (the governing body) World Cup in late 2019 rates as a personal high when he won the keirin final in Hong Kong. “That was a real thrill for me as someone who was racing at that level for the first time with the calibre of riders involved. I set the goal internally but to reach the final was the dream let alone to win.” So who might potentially be the competition for Marlborough gold and success in Birmingham in late July? “There are some great guys from Canada, Great Britain, Australia and Malaysia. Unfortunately, Malaysian track cyclist Azizulhasni Awang nicknamed the ‘pocket rocketman’ (due to his small stature) won’t be at the starting line in Birmingham. He

recently had open heart surgery and has medaled in the keirin at the last two Olympics. “At the end of the day, it’s a race and you can’t count yourself out because of variables which you can’t control.” Speaking of variables, is Callum allowed a cheeky pineapple lump or a scoop of Hokey Pokey before competing against the world’s best athletes? “Our protein intake always has to be quite high. Over the course of the week our carbohydrate intake fluctuates also. As sprinters we basically run on carbs. You’ll see some of us racing in the Olympics and eating snakes and lollies between a race which seems counterintuitive but for us it’s fuel and it works.” One of his more memorable times was after Tokyo when he along with mates and his Mum and Dad cycled the Kahurangi 500 trail, a loop that links up the Old Ghost Road, Heaphy and Rameka Tracks. “It was one of those awesome things which took about six days. It was quite cool having these stark, opposite experiences in racing Olympic Games and doing a trip like that. That’s one of the best things I’ve ever done on a bike. The happiness that this vehicle gives me isn’t going to be constricted by my time in high performance sport. I am passionate about making this sport more accessible for all people.” Callum and teammate Sam have started a recruitment company in the Waikato called Podium Recruit. The company provides athletes pathways into roles beyond or after sport with their respective transferable skills such as time management and diligence. He says one of the biggest things he has learned with his networking and resources through cycling, is the assurance of what he wants to do and why he wants to do it. “I’ve got a really clear picture on the sort of things I want to do in life outside and after sport.” There goes that exploration once again.

The 26-year-old was recently named in a 30 strong New Zealand Cycling Team for this month’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The cycling team comprising track, road and mountain biking, is the second biggest of the New Zealand sports to be represented at the games.

Love Letters By Chris Valli

A fundraiser to support Richmond View student James Dight is on in Blenheim next weekend. Blenheim Musical Theatre has teamed up with James to perform the two act play called Love Letters by A.R Gurney. James, a Year 8 student, will join the New Zealand team, known as the Kiwi All-Stars at the Australasian Musical Theatre Junior Festival in Newcastle, this October. The Junior Festival Australia gives attendees the opportunity to experience the transformative power of musical theatre through watching performances, attending workshops and making connections with other musical theatre groups from across Australia. Other activities include a National Institute Dramatic Art (NIDA) acting workshop. NIDA is a leading Australian centre for education and training in the performing arts and based in Sydney. The two readers for the acclaimed theatre piece are Kim Weatherhead and Peter Meikle who star as Melissa and Andrew respectively. Both bring a wealth of experience in the homage to the age of letter writing/pen pals. Love Letters was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, one of the seven American Pulitzer prizes for letters, drama and music. James says he’s extremely thankful to Peter and Kim along with everybody else behind the scenes for giving up their time to help with the fundraiser. “I learnt so much from Peter during Les Misérables and hope to make him proud.” Peter Meikle, director of recent Blen-

heim Musical Theatre production of Les Misérables says the play needs no lengthy rehearsal and or special set. He says, all it needs is just a commitment from two actors on the night(s) of the performance. “One of the things I really enjoy about ‘Love Letters’ is the absolute theatre craft involved in performing Andy and the skills I have to use in performance. Working with Melissa it is an absolute privilege to bring the words of A.R. Gurney to life and have the opportunity to share these words and thoughts with an audience. It is a rare gift in this very technical age of theatre to pull back and totally rely on the basic tools that an actor has to return to the fundamentals of stagecraft and have the responsibility for the storytelling in the pure, emotional spellbinding way.” Peter says the play will cater for anyone who loves and respects serious theatre, enjoys listening to great storytelling and appreciates a golden age of elegant theatre. “Given that this fundraiser is about sending a young new actor on the start of his journey it is a tribute to the whole of theatrecraft to be able to showcase what performance is about in the outstanding, highly praised piece of true performance based theatre.” James says he is looking forward to meeting lots of directors, seeing the opera house and getting to meet other performers. Fancy testing your balance and agility skills these upcoming July holidays? Blenheim’s accredited Acro Dance Instructor Amy Potts will be holding acrobatic workshops over the course of three days on July 14 - 18. The various locations for the sessions include Dance on Grove, Stadium 2000 and the Marlborough Academy of Dance Auckland street rooms. Acro Dance is described as a culmination of dance and acrobatic tricks. Amy says the skills are similar to gymnastics such as cartwheels, handsprings and aerials but are taught in a way that allows the tricks to be seamlessly incorporated into unique choreography. “As tricks become more advanced they focus equally on gravity-defying dance tumbling and unique variations of skills,” Amy says. There are nine workshops on offer, with something to suit everyone from toddlers to beginners to experienced acro dancers, and there is even a session just for teenagers. She says private lessons are also available for anyone wishing to receive focused one-on-one training on a certain skill, or dance technique. Most sessions are one and a half hours long and the cost is $20.00 each for the first two workshops. Any additional sessions are reduced to $15.00 each. We are all aware once we retire, especially those relying on the pension as their sole income, that we need to tighten the purse strings. The Warehouse offers the same deal and NPD service station offer good discounts on petrol on a Tuesday. So, if your weekly grocery shop is $100.00 a week you save $5.00 per week or $10.00 a fortnight. I have also recently signed up for membership at Stadium 2000. Being a senior, you are entitled to join on the corporate scheme which is currently $11.10 per week. This can be paid weekly, fortnightly or monthly and entitles you to use any of the facilities at the complex including the pool, the aqua fitness sessions held every week day, the spa, sauna and the gym. Your $5.00 a week savings from other sources goes a long way to pay your membership and it can be a one stop shop for your fitness needs. RDA’s “awesome” work sees 100 percent improvement By Glenise Dreaver

A Marlborough College student in their Learning Unit, she was born with Wolf Hirschhorn syndrome. “That affects everything. Her growth, her speech, her brain development, and she’s been a very, very slow developer,” said her father Brian. “She only has some ability to verbalise, but she understands everything said to her,” he explained. Because of the effect on her growth, she is “just a wee dot of a girl”. Despite this, as the syndrome goes, she is a “very, very mild case,” Brian added. “She’s not wheelchair-bound, and as parents we are very, very lucky.” They are a family with equestrian sports in their blood, with her great grandfather having been a trainer, her grandfather a racehorse jockey and her mother, Rosa, also a rider. And from Zoe’s very first experience with horses at age 10, she just “went wild” said Brian. “She loved it.” He adds that Marlborough Riding for the Disabled has been “just

fantastic. The improvement in all aspects of her development has been 100 percent. “Horses are like dolphins,” he added. “They just have a natural affiliation with kids.” And RDA is, he says, “an awesome charity”. Unremitting hours of practice with a Swiss ball, very reluctantly stopping when called to eat, has seen Zoe develop her thigh muscles so much that she is now preparing to trot. Family commitments in the UK however, mean that she will miss September’s regional Special Ribbon events in Marlborough, emerging from a two-year hiatus due to Covid. Also thanks to Covid, the Tates hadn’t been able to attend her grandfather’s funeral in February, so will be there for the ceremony to spread his ashes. One thing is for sure, whatever the delays, Zoe will be continuing onwards and upwards in her equestrian career

SAFE CEO Debra Ashton is calling for a complete ban on the use of farrowing crates and says the crates are cruel and do not provide for the basic health and behavioural needs of mother pigs. “Alternative systems that provide greater behavioural freedom for mother pigs are already in use on nearly half of pig farms in Aotearoa,” said Ashton. The consultation is the result of a judicial review bought by NZALA and SAFE, challenging the continued use of farrowing crates for mother pigs. In 2020 the High Court ruled that the Minister of Agriculture and NAWAC acted illegally when they failed to phase out farrowing crates. “A ban on farrowing crates is long overdue. Parliament signalled seven years ago that farrowing crates would need to be phased out. And following the 2020 High Court Decision, these changes will bring pig farmers in line with the law. Nelson provincial president Stephen Todd says the proposal for farmers to hold sheep 50 metres back from a road while they are shifting stock, until all cars have driven past, could end up being an unworkable joke. “Farmers are going to think this is crazy. By the time the sheep get to the road, more cars could have come past, meaning the sheep have to be moved 50 metres away from the road again before they can cross. It could take all day to shift a mob and cause everyone, especially the sheep, a lot of stress. “We’re talking about mainly remote rural roads, paid for mainly by rates on farm properties. Matt Chisholm Rural Support Tour TV presenter turned sheep and beef farmer Matt Chisholm has signed on as the inaugural Ambassador for Rural Support Trust. The Rural Support Trust is a not-for-profit network of 14 regional trusts which provide free and confidential assistance to rural people facing challenges around health and wellbeing, financial pressures, animal welfare (including Mycoplasma Bovis), employment matters and adverse events. Matt kicked off his ambassadorship role with a nationwide tour talking to rural communities on the topic of mental wellness and resilience. Chisholm has shared openly about his mental health struggles. Through the tour, he will talk about his personal experiences and how he found a way through. Chisholm started the Time Out Tour in Southland and Stewart Island earlier last month and he’s travelling up the country to visit rural communities at the beginning of July. Next stop for the Time Out Tour will be the top of the South Island where he will visit Golden Bay, Tapawera and Rai Valley. Key to getting Matt into the role has been Taranaki Rural Support Trust Chairman and long-time family friend Mike Green. “Matt told his story in public for the first time at an event the Trust hosted in New Plymouth in 2020, shortly after the screening of his documentary, Man Enough. “Matt’s role as our Ambassador is about remaining mentally resilient through tough times. We’ve partnered with him because we feel strongly he has an important message to share with rural people, to give hope that there is a way through whatever difficulties individuals and families may be facing,” Green said. Matt’s battles are documented in Imposter, a book he published last year, and documentaries Like a Man and Man Enough, both supported by the Mental Health Foundation. Speaking of his Ambassadorship role, Matt says, “I like the good work the Rural Support Trust does – largely behind the scenes. I want people to understand how the Trust can help them in their communities, so more people can access their services when they need it most.” Matt said his key message to anyone struggling with such pressure was to ask for help. “Instead of having conversations with yourself

I came home from Nelson on Sunday morning to discover my cat and good mate, Quinn had died after being hit by a car. Pulling up into the driveway/garage, I noticed a green towel on the back lawn and thought nothing of it. The shock I felt when I realised it was Quinn, left me numb. A sense of yuckiness, what/how/when? It was good fortune my neighbour found her on the road and wrapped the towel around her and placed her on the back lawn. Good fortune because you often hear of cats who get hit and end up in various locations and not being returned or that sense of closure. I lost a golden Labrador, Sam, as a 16-year-old and at the time, was one of the toughest things to experience. Yet, this one was/is harder for various reasons. Whether it being winter and the prospect of having a feline friend to snuggle on a cold Redwoodtown night or the routines that come with a cat or any domesticated pet for that matter. Ironically, I read last week and did a story around Pet Therapy and the role that the SPCA provides in building human-animal

bonds. The interaction with a pet can help physical and mental health issues. It can also release endorphins that produce a calming effect. Quinn did this without question. She helped me - I wonder if she knew it? The times she would look at me with a reciprocal or loving stare when greeted and or the aftermath of having a good feed of her favourite chicken flavoured meal. Quinn was special. Had human-like qualities. She gave birth to kittens before Christmas and was unbelievably amazing in her approach to care and doing what cats do when it comes to looking after their own Sunday was tough. Real tough. The reality of digging a hole in the front lawn to bury her brought back the reality of saying goodbye to a cat that made an undeniable impression in such a short space of time (she was coming up two years). It hurt. Real hard and I cried. A lot and then some... She was pawesome. A companion indeed. Life certainly has a way of asking questions. She answered many of mine, without knowing it. RIP Qunnister. Dad :)

gardening this week Disease control: By Wally Richards One of the products that we have that is excellent for preventing and the control of a number of plant diseases is Perkfection. We named it Perkfection for Roses as the commercial product is called Perk Supa. Gardeners have found it a boon in prevention of diseases such as black spot and rust on roses during the season. Perkfection along with Magic Botanic Liquid make a great combination for plant health. Silverleaf disease in stone fruit and roses has been arrested if you notice the disease early and spray Perkfection once a month during the growing season, starting again in the spring when the plants start to leaf up. Buxus disease is a curse for people growing Buxus hedges but a bi-monthly spray will keep the hedge looking great. I remember a gardener that had a Buxus hedge that had got so bad there were hardly any leaves left. He used Perkfection and after about 6 months the hedge was back to it full glory. There is a product out there for Buxus disease which as far as I am aware is a mild solution of the chemical in Perkfection. Apparently from feedback I have heard that it does help Buxus recovery but not as quickly and as effectively as our one does. Downy mildew or dry berry will be cured with Perkfection. During wet times when water sensitive plants start to have root rot then sprays of Perfection will speed up recovery as long as the plant has not gone beyond the point of no return. So what is Perkfection then? The active ingredient of Perkfection is ‘Phosphite ion’ or Phosphonic Acid. (Potassium ions are also present). The safety when handling Perkfection can be described by the following; formulations of neutral salts, which do not contain wetting agents, would have very little, if any at all, absorption through the skin. Only people with extreme allergy problems would show any sensitivity. Being neutral salts it has no corrosive effect and only causes irritation to people with very sensitive skin. If spray drift entered the eyes then the irritation would be similar to that experienced with a salt solution. Corrosive damage will not occur. This all means that Perkfection is safe to han-

dle and spray, though all care of oneself should be taken, it is a product that you do not have to use extreme measures, as one should do with many other garden sprays of a chemical nature. The next important thing is “There is NO WITHHOLDING PERIOD” when used on food crops. I would suggest however if you pick something that you have sprayed that day, wash it as you may have a ‘tainted’ taste. Perkfection is used extensively by commercial growers (as PerK Supa) on produce and fruit as it’s safe, effective, in control and not restrictive on exports of produce. We have suggested Perkfection for Roses and other plants as an alternative to more toxic sprays, for the assistance in recovery from/or prevention of, the following problems, Black Spot, Downy Mildew, Phytophthora Root Rot, Canker, Heart Rot, Damping Off, Crown Rot, Leaf Blight, Silver Leaf, Late Blight, Collar Rot, Pink Rot, Brown Rot, Armillaria, and Gummy Stem Rot. Now that’s quiet a list of diseases and it also means that many of your disease related problems can be overcome with this safe to use product. Besides using Perkfection over your roses for the likes of Black spot and Downy mildew you can also use it as a spray over all your fruiting plants and trees including your strawberries. It can be used also over your potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, beans, cucurbits (cucumbers etc) lawns, onions, passion fruit, Cauliflowers, cybidium orchids and ornamental plants and vines. In fact there is no where you cannot use Perkfection to advantage.

Being ‘Synthetic Organic Phosphates’ what you are doing, is placing this valuable material, onto the foliage of your plants, where it is very readily absorbed and transferred through the whole of the plant. This fortifies the plant’s cells, increases the plant’s immune system and makes your plants less susceptible to invading pathogens. There is however a down side, as with any good thing, you can have too much and the recommendation is to use Perkfection at 5 ml per litre of spray once a month only, and only for about 5 times in a season. (Note a season is the normal period of time for that crop or plant. Roses are from Spring till Autumn. Most annuals 5-6 months.) The reason is that, you can over load your plant with organic phosphates causing a clogging of the cells and halting growth until the system clears. Prevention is better than cure and by spraying your plants in the spring you give the greatest protection to leaves and fruit, autumn spray will give greatest protection to roots and tubers. I have suggested that on the 1st of the month to spray your roses and other plants with Perkfection, Mycorrcin Plus and Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL). 14 days later (15th) spray with Mycorrcin Plus and MBL. If insect problems occur then spray with the most suitable Neem Product. (Neem Tree Oil, scale, mealy bug, thrips and mites, caterpillars and beetles; Add Super Pyrethrum for aphids and whitefly.) All these sprays are compatible. They are all safe to use with most of them being organic and that’s what we need in this day and age.

Who’s bright - not - idea was to lay down silty mud onto the top of the parking area behind the recycling depo? Now a quogmire. Not a lot of thought put into this. Get some gravel down so excess water can drain away.

There were just as many bad drivers in Victorian times as today, the difference being the horses had more brains than the drivers, you don’t get that with cars.

Matariki

Great idea

What a fantastic celebration! Thursday we climbed up to Rotary Lookout with Springlands School at 6.30am and enjoyed waiata with the tamariki and afterwards Kai at the school. Friday we watched Prime TV and learned so many interesting and positive things about Matariki. A very poignant comment that was made really struck me “ Our culture and language was colonialised out of us”. This is a shame that we have to bear. However it should be addressed and owned by the UK crown and furthermore arrogant and biased immigrants (especially from UK) should take the time to learn more about Māori culture and accept their part in what has happened in the past. After all they have chosen to live here so become a real New Zealander and don’t think of themselves as superior. We are not their colonials they are the interloper. Kia kaha Kiwis!!! Pakeha kiwi

Highway crashes Once upon a time there was a choice to make. Keep the ferry terminal in Picton or move it to Clifford Bay. Common sense pointed to Clifford Bay: shorter and safer trip for ferry, trains, trucks and cars. Less fuel consumption, less congestion through Picton and Blenheim, less disturbance in the Sounds, etc. But common sense did not prevail and the ferries stayed in Picton.

Stolen wood Wondering why folk think they are entitled to help themselves to fire wood from the Lions fixture?? Lions work very hard to supply firewood, all cut by themselves for charity, and put wood in the Firewood fixture for folk to purchase at a very reasonable price, just to have some or all stolen??

National Party true colours Who would have thought so many of the Nat’s would be supporting the loony US Supreme Court ruling against abortion, perhaps they’re not really a political party at all, something else in disguise? They could set our rights back 50years. Better be ready ladies, “Be sweet, pray & obey”, now where have I heard that before ? I know Gloriavale!!

Recent article of local Iwi looking at a Cutural Centre in Blenheim to be built and a place to house artefacts. (Great) I see they are asking for approx $100,000 from the MBC for a feasibility study for this. Should we rate payers be funding this. (No) Rate payers are about to pay approx 5 plus % extra very soon on our rates. Iwi need to look at past Government settlements for this. (MDC and we rate payers are not a bank)

Re reduce speed About licences now. I think that what youth have to go through to get their licence is more than thorough. 6 months with learner up to restricted then 9 + months if you have done defensive driving more if you haven’t. Then you get to sit your full licence. I learnt to drive from scratch and got my full licence all in a week. Kids today are 99% better drivers. Take a look around and watch some of the older drivers seriously lacking in skills.

Both ways Christopher Luxon’s statement that he will not change abortion laws in NZ under his watch then going on to say he is Pro Life is taking a bob each way or sitting on the fence. He can’t have it both ways. This is typical National party politics. Say one thing. Mean another. If you can’t trust them on this, you can’t trust them on anything. Politics is such a dirty game.

I still see a lot of drivers who don’t understand how to indicate at roundabouts. Some of them would be better not indicating at all. They flick their left indicator on well back from the roundabout and then sail on straight through and out the other side with indicator still on! An accident waiting to happen. Go back and have another look at the rules.

Earthquakes I note a few earthquakes rumbling the country. A 5.5 near Milford this morn. Could another big one be on its way? A timely reminder to have those kits on the ready. You’d be glad you did, if and when it happens.

Wage increase? Hands up who got a 5.39% wage or salary increase to keep pace with the planned rates increase?

My husband used to be a tow truck driver in Auckland and the things he saw you would not believe. Sport is an extra for many families in 2022 The barriers for Joe and Jill Average to play sport go far beyond cost in 2022. I say this as a group called Affordable Sports for Greater Wellington look to pressure Wellington City Council to drop fees to make playing grassroots sports more accessible however, in my view, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The group has been pulled together by five major codes: Wellington Hockey, Capital Football, Capital Basketball, Cricket Wellington, and Wellington Rugby, as well as College Sport Wellington.

Group Chair Lisa Jones said councils are making it too expensive to play sport because of the unfair fees to provide and maintain fields, turfs and indoor facilities. “The rise of the cost of living now makes these fees a real threat to participation in sport. Councils say sport is good for residents’ wellbeing but do nothing to keep fees from going up, it’s now time for us to do something about it.” The Wellington region has the most expensive fees in New Zealand for sports, clubs and schools to use Council grounds. Councils charge fees for use of fields in

competitions, and fees to clubs for training, and for facilities such as changing rooms,” she says. While all that is perfectly logical and is one of the barriers to sport, I think the lifestyle of families no longer make sport as viable during the week. Parents often work two jobs and it’s a commitment to get kids to practices and games. Gone are the days where kids can walk to their trainings and home again, many are unlikely to see public transport as a timely way of getting to these events on time either.

So that leaves time-poor parents having to shuttle kids all around the place. Then comes the realisation that the child won’t be the next All Black, Black Cap or Olympian, their interest level drops and the social pressures of having a boyfriend or girlfriend, alcohol and passing NCEA increase. My partner and I discussed that if we had a child we’d try to steer them clear of high contact sports like rugby because the risk of serious injury is greater than say basketball, tennis or squash. watching your child play for up to eight hours on a Saturday is a huge time commitment and the traditional Saturday model of sport, where parents are out the door at 8am and on chilly sidelines, is outdated. I’d much rather see my potential child of the future play midweek basketball at night, indoors and get it over and done with so our weekends would be free. Priorities change once you’re just playing sport for the fun and fitness of it and as the economic reality starts to bite, social sport in 2022 may be seen as a luxury for many.
