Industrial hemp sustainable By Chris Valli
A need to build resilient supply chains and the potential of a thriving Marlborough economy using sustainable crops of hemp was at the forefront of conversations in Blenheim last night. The New Zealand Hemp Industry Association ‘Discovery and Investment Tour’ was held at the Marlborough Research Centre to talk about the sustainable benefits of hemp across a variety of industries. Hemp, or industrial hemp, is grown specifically for industrial or medicinal use. It can be used to make a wide range of products and refined into a variety of commercial items including paper, rope, clothes and building materials. Continued on page 2. Hark and Zander owner Kirsty Harkness has seen the benefits of industrial hemp in her hemp oil skincare business.

He says they are looking for Marlborough farmers, growers, entrepreneurs and businesses who want to discover how to invest upskill and become part of New Zealand’s ‘next billion-dollar industry’. Richard believes hemp is in the conversation due to it being a sustainable alternate land use, that can work well in the farming rotation (including viticulture), and provide raw materials for a wide range of industries, in the food, fibre and health sectors. He says another purpose behind the tour is to promote the economic and investment potential for an iHemp industry in the Blenheim region. An ihemp industry is based on an annual crop producing fiber for construction materials, textiles, geo textiles, plastics and composite industries. Thoughtful Viticulture Owner and Consultant Dr Mark Krasnow received his doctorate in integrative crop plant physiology from University of California (UC Davis) Davis in 2004. Since then he has conducted research, taught and offered consultancy services for the wine industry globally. He says his research results of his three year study shows that hemp is a viable cover crop for New Zealand vineyards. “The presence of hemp in the vineyards provides a means of alleviating soil compaction, addiction of organic matter to the soil without

negatively affecting the vines, and a potential second income stream for the grower.” Meanwhile, Kirsty Harkness, Founder of Hark & Zander says Marlborough is a great region for growing hemp. The skincare business began in Marlborough while Kirsty was researching the potential of an innovative crop of hemp which she’d planted to replenish and enrich the soil. Subsequently, she discovered hemp could be used on her skin as a natural replacement to synthetic skincare. “We currently harvest our organically grown hemp in the north island, but we would love to be

sourcing it from Marlborough in the near future because Marlborough is predominantly known for viticulture.” Dr Mark has completed three years of research on hemp being grown as a cover crop in the vines. The results have proven it’s a very beneficial companion crop and he aims to publish their findings later this year. Hemp plants contain no more than 0.3 percent (by dry weight) of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive substance found in marijuana. By comparison, marijuana typically contains 5 to 20 percent THC. The low rates of THC in industrial hemp mean they do not produce psychoactive effects when ingested.
Another local business success story is with the (Nelson based) Chia Sisters who craft a sustainable range of pressed juices, smoothies, sparkling and superfood drinks bottled by solar power and with zero carbon. “They have a hemp ingredient in their drinks, iHemp milk and other plant based beverages are in high demand, with large global niche markets waiting for more additional New Zealand products.” So what would lead it to being sustainable in the respective industries? “Alternate land use, avoiding mono crops, attracting biodiversity - managing the scale will be important to match supply with demand for it to be sustainable,” Richard says.

The Art of Burlesque By Chris Valli
A Top of the South accountant is taking the Burlesque world by storm and is encouraging fellow Marlburians to join her. Now based in Nelson Angela McIntosh, stage name ‘Angel Blush’ says she competed along with 10 other contestants for the title of Miss Burlesque Aotearoa competition in Wellington at the weekend and although didn’t place says she had a great time with new learnings and insights. “It was and is a very empowering experience. What I took away from the event, even in a competition, is how incredibly supportive, kind, caring and inclusive the competitors, organisers and wider Burlesque community is to everyone from all backgrounds.” Angela grew up in Blenheim and went to Marlborough Girls’ College and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in accountancy through Massey University. She is currently a stay at home Mum caring for three children under the age of five. However, this doesn’t stop her being involved with the Nelson Showgirl Academy where she assists with teaching classes there as well as performing Burlesque. So how or when did Burlesque become an option? “There is an amazing, supportive burlesque scene in Nelson, through the Nelson Showgirl Academy that as soon as I was aware of it, I began taking classes and was hooked.” The word Burlesque derives from the Italian ‘buriesco’ which in turn is derived from ‘buria’ which translates to a joke, ridicule or mockery.

Cash injection for Kaikoura Housing Infrasture Housing projects in Kaikoura are set to be fast-tracked, thanks to a $7.8 million Government cash injection. Funding from Kainga Ora’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF) will fund infrastructure to support more than 400 new homes in Kaikoura, including housing for the elderly and those on low to medium incomes. Housing is planned across two different sites - a proposed new sub-division in the town, Vicarage Views, and Ocean Ridge, south of Kaikoura. The project is one of seven around the country which secured Government funding announced by Housing Minister Dr Megan Woods last Thursday.

However, for Angela the definition and feeling she gets when she performs is one of confidence. She defines Burlesque as the art of the tease. Angela’s area of burlesque speciality is dressing pinup in her everyday life and says she loves all things vintage and especially enjoys classic Burlesque with influences from the 1940s and 1950s. The pin-up style is various glamour or fashion models whose pictures were intended for informal display, meaning to be “pinned-up” on a wall, which is the basis for the etymology of the phrase. The pictures are also sometimes known as cheesecake photos. She says the Nelson Showgirl Academy is very keen to come over to Blenheim to teach workshops

and perform as well. On the calendar is Miss Vintage Australasia sponsored by Retro America, an international pinup pageant which is being held at Vintage Fest NZ, New Zealand’s newest vintage extravaganza. The event is being held in Christchurch at the Lincoln Event Centre Saturday, September 24. “I am the only contestant from the top of the south so it would be great to have some Marlburians there to cheer me on and I will be competing with
nine other finalists in three categories; everyday wear, summer wear and formal wear. “The event will be a must for any vintage enthusiast with everything from Military displays, carnival for the kids, rock and roll dancing competition, many stalls and even a victory themed dance.” Angela says Marlburians who are keen to get in touch regarding opportunities with Burlesque classes in Blenheim can go through Nelson Showgirl Academy at www. nelsonshowgirlacademy.com
After 23 years of operation, Marlborough 4 Fun, which has organised and delivered a wide range of community events, is winding down its operations. Council’s Economic, Community and Support Services Manager, Dean Heiford, says while the contract between the Council and Marlborough 4 Fun was due to conclude next year, the resignation of the organisation’s general manager has resulted in the Marlborough 4 Fun Trust reviewing its operations. “Marlborough 4 Fun has done some wonderful work in our community over the last two decades. However, over the past two years the pressures associated with Covid-19 have made gaining sponsorship and running events incredibly difficult,” Mr Heiford said. Even though it is the end of an era for the organisation some of its key events will continue to be delivered through the Council, including the Christmas Parade and the New Year’s Eve festival, Ignite Marlborough.

Rare feather cloak prepared for display By Glenise Dreaver
“This is such a privilege.” Pam Saunders, a volunteer textile collection manager at Marlborough Museum for some forty years, is talking about her latest project, implementing the conservation of one of Marlborough Museum’s treasures. The kiwi feather cloak, that is currently the focus of attention has been carefully kept cool, and dry, as well as away from damaging sunlight for many decades. Brayshaw’s property, then it came with the Marlborough Historical Society collection to Brayshaw Heritage Park. Steve Austin, Executive Director, Marlborough Heritage Trust, says they have no absolutely concrete evidence of cloaks origins, but sometimes pakeha doctors, translators and lawyers who assisted iwi were given these kinds of high status items rather than being paid with money. Many of these beautiful items have now found there way into museum collections having been passed down through the families of the original recipients. The cloak is unusual, with different shades of feathers from the little brown kiwi, correctly called a kahukiwi. These are not known before the second half of the nineteenth century Steve says. “This one is from the early part of that period - it’s very rare and it’s on the national database.” He says experts understand the cloak shows the use of South Island weaving techniques, but it hasn’t been possible to associate it with any particular weaver or iwi at this stage. “We can say it’s been done by an accomplished weaver and it’s been worn a lot and well-loved,” he says. Pam adds that there are repairs on the reverse reflecting the care that was taken with the garment. She says that it was in the 1990’s that Valerie Carson from Te Papa showed her how such garments needed to be carefully laid flat to preserve them properly, rather than being rolled up as it had been for years. The kahukiwi was then placed in an acid free box with acid free tissue and stored, awaiting further expert conservation. “It’s called preventive conservation,” Pam says. ‘My job is to stabilise, and provide the best
Master Weaver Rangi Te Kanawa has brought her expertise in conserving Maori korowai to this Marlborough Heritage Museum treasure. preservation environment, not mend to make things look like new.’ “We do as little as is necessary,” Steve adds. “Preventive conservation means caring for each piece of fibre and feather and aiming to ensure it will be here for another 500 years.” They are very grateful to Te Papa who have provided the funding and expertise to take the restoration of the cloak to the next level, having twice sent expert conservator Rangi Te Kanawa to do initial work for the next major part of the project, planned for September/October. “She’s going to use a specially imported organza and stich it to the back of the cloak to add a structural integrity and support to the whole piece,” says Pam. The organza will be transparent adds Steve, so the details of both sides of the cloak can be seen clearly.
Pam and her team of volunteers have been given tasks to do in preparation for Rangi’s work, but she says there could be a hitch. The particular organza ordered proved on arrival to be a different texture than Rangi had expected, and new organza may need to be requested. There are high hopes that if the process is completed in October, partly funded by the Marlborough Historical Society, the cloak can be put on public display for the summer. “That’s doable,” says Pam. In the meantime, Pam and her team have some guidance for work they can do in preparation for Rangi’s visit. Steve says: ’ it is a good feeling to know we are doing our best for this treasure of Marlborough heritage so that it can have a long-life future to inspire succeeding generations.”

Sour Crème The Musical By Chris Valli
Blenheim based Director Rose Platenkamp is creative in every sense of the word. When it came time for her to tap into that creativity being stuck in MIQ for ten days, Sour Crème The Musical came to fruition. “A hotel room in Auckland without distractions was a perfect place to start writing the script. I got inspired by a news article; ‘People devote a third of their waking time to mobile apps’. Apparently, we are spending an average of 4.8 hours a day on our mobile phones. For teenagers, that number is even higher. Influencers on social media are constantly telling us what to eat to lose weight, how to meditate, which yoga poses you need to practice to open your chakras, which contouring product to buy to look ten years younger. The list just goes on. In this overwhelming digital world, how does social media have an influence on children and teenagers?” Rose says she wanted to write a script that was relatable, and makes the audience laugh out loud about the absurdities in life that we all have to deal with living in 2022. So is the lead character ‘Connie La Crème’, the woman who has it all and the owner of a successful spa resort someone from Rose’s upbringing and or past? “Connie is definitely not based on a single person, but rather a lot of the bad parts about society in general. I think everyone will see a little bit of someone or something they don’t particularly like in Connie.” Rose says as a scriptwriter you can really play to the student’s strengths. She says there is a lot of talent among the cast. As for the music she describes it as fun. “It’s songs we all know and love with a little Sour Crème twist. Designed to make you want to boogie in your seats and with a smile on your face as a good musical should.” For me, a wonderful performer is not only

someone with talent, but also someone who is willing to work hard, show up to all rehearsals, take on feedback and most importantly is lovely and respectful to the whole cast and crew. I’m not interested in students who are imitating other performers they might have seen on YouTube. An authentic performer, regardless of their age, is someone who can connect to the character they are playing by using their imagination. That requires courage and vulnerability, and is where the magic starts.” So why should Marlburians see the show? “It’s a fabulous show. It’s got something for the whole family. It’s funny, the songs will have you dancing in the aisles and the hard work all the kids have put in really shows.” Sour Crème will run for six shows and is on at Blenheim Musical Theatre, Lakings Road from Thursday, August 18 - Sunday, August 21. The Thursday and Friday shows are at 6:30pm and the Saturday and Sunday shows are 11:30 and 6:30pm respectively.

Dear Ed I’m not impressed by the current TV series “This is Going to Hurt”, which is a shame since gynecologist Andy Kay’s book of the same name is one of the best things I’ve ever read. I’d urge your readers to get hold of it, if they only read one book over the next 12 months; it’s in the shops and in our Library. Dr Kay ended up burnt out by what the pollies and the bureaucrats did to Britain’s NHS, but
his diary entries over a number of years in hospitals show vast humanity, and are both heartbreaking and hilarious. I got the book three or four years back and still find it enlightening on a re-reading. Treasure and fight for your government health service, people! Yours faithfully Bill Holvey

Now that a road safety expert has confirmed, what is already known, by the majority of us, that using this road, or any other NZ road, they/it can be challenging. Constantly siting a reduced speed limit is no a solution, as when reviewing most accidents it is seldom a simple matter of excessive speed. More often than not inattentiveness is the singular cause. Such is the case with the most recent multiple fatality, brought on, it is believed, by the driver falling asleep. However, his recommendation of a centre line rumble strip might have proven successful, and at a fraction of the cost of the side crash
barriers, where the worst outcome might result in a soaking in the swamp. And has already been disproved by a singular fatality on SH6, where a 90kph limit was imposed, after great fanfare, last year. Many accidents causing fatalities are in vehicles of less than three years old, with a five star safety rating, which almost drive themselves and therefore a 100kmh speed limit actually promotes inattentiveness. Let’s not reduce our driving experience to one of the let’s follow the slowest vehicle while trying to stay awake. Chris Davies Past traffic signal engineer

Ultimate goal to give back to the community ASB Theatre Chief Executive Joseph Casalme tells Chris Valli why his creative and events management experience will hold him in good stead for the talented performing arts scene here in Marlborough. There is a warm, acknowledged handshake and focus when one first meets Joseph Casalme. A proud born and bred Filipino Joseph says his culture is known for their joy regardless the situation. He says it’s a value he encourages and cultivates in all areas of his working and personal life. The new chief executive and face of Blenheim’s ASB Theatre has been in his role for just two months and has made the transition to the top of the south with his wife from the events plethora that is Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland. There is no irony lost that the translation of ‘Tāmaki’ means ‘desired by many.’ Whether that desire is from ‘locals’ starved of events and hospitality for more shows to the region with a greater economic and social impact, is yet to be um staged. Although fresh to the role and the Marlborough region, the 50-year-old is enthused by the opportunity and facility driven by the Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust which raised millions through sponsorship, grants and council funds. Joseph has extensive experience in events and media and since 2009 worked at a Trust that owned and operated the Vodafone Events Centre and Vector Wero Whitewater Park in Auckland. “I was involved in many areas of the business and was part of the GM Community which saw over 65,000 students through the programme. I managed the programmes with a total Community Good Value of more than $1.5 million and I also led the retail sales team of Vector Wero.” So he’s in no better position to lead
the team at Blenheim’s ASB Theatre. The multi-use and purpose built venue overlooking the albeit of late, rain impacted Taylor River. Joseph says he has a number of strengths he brings to the role including experience in the creative and performing arts within the events and venue management context. He says he designs systems, builds teams and grows programmes and businesses and ultimately empowers people.
“Some families have three generations of performers, musicians, etc.” So what exactly does this look like? “Ensure that the team is clear of the Trust’s “WHY” and have a deep understanding of our purpose. It’s about creating a system with clear sets of processes, roles and resource requirements that will live within a culture that values excellence, trust, service and sense of humanity.” He says the roles are the basis of each team member’s responsibilities and functional relationships while ensuring that the team has the support and resources it needs individually and as a group to perform it’s tasks and meet it’s goals.” Joseph says the theatre staff are adjusting and responding positively to event life albeit with Covid still hanging around like the proverbial in the wider Marlborough community So are there any shows, big events on

the calendar in the upcoming 12 - 24 months? “There are tribute bands coming (Bruce Springsteen Tribute Band in September along with Tina Turner Tribute show in October) and we have a packed schedule for business events and functions for the next six months. Unfortunately, Covid has shut the borders and is making travel difficult for overseas touring companies and planning ahead. The biggest show next year is of course the one to be produced by Blenheim Musical Theatre, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the Musical in May 2023.” Joseph says he is looking to consolidate the ongoing relationship with Blenheim Musical Theatre after a successful production season back in May of Les Misérables which saw packed Blenheim audiences enthused about attending a local event let alone seeing one of the world’s leading musical scores. “I’m looking to collaborate with BMT on how we can provide opportunities to its volunteers to work with our Venue Technicians. I’m also looking into youth programmes and workshops, so watch this space.” Speaking of musicals, is there a preferred musical and or play that he has? “Grease was obviously my favourite growing up. For a very short while when I was a small kid, I thought that people would break into song and crowds would start dancing in real life. The Greatest Showman is one of my favourite musical films for sure.” In a pandemic world bereft of live musical performances in indoor spaces cancelled or postponed, what are his plans in the short term with the theatre? “ Like other businesses, the theatre

was affected by Covid, its restrictions and other current economic factors. My short term priority is to strengthen the business, the team, its systems, its revenue streams.” Joseph says his take on the theatre and performing arts scene here in Marlborough reflects one that has a very rich and strong arts tradition. “Some organisations have been active for over 100 years. It’s a pleasant surprise that for a region of around 50,000 people, the

community is teeming with many talented artistic people of different ages and backgrounds. Some families have three generations of performers, musicians, etc. such that we see full time professionals be involved in the arts, whether on stage, off stage and or production.” He says the best thing about what he does is simplistic in every definition. “I love what I do and our ultimate goal is to give back to the community. That’s a rare combo.”

HENRY FORD BIRTHDAY MEET Hosted by Ford Club Marlborough
31 July, 2022, Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, Aerodrome Road, Blenheim All proceeds go to Hospice Marlborough and Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.
It’s a Ford thing By Chris Valli
All engines go for the Ford Club Marlborough this weekend. The Ford Club Marlborough will host an event in Blenheim for the first time ever which will see Ford enthusiasts champing at the bit. Secretary Murray Eyles says following discussions earlier this year between both Ford Club Marlborough and Ford Club Nelson it was agreed the celebrations for the annual Henry Ford birthday gatherings would benefit from alternating venues between both of the top of the South Island Clubs. The event has become a major annual car show which attracts people from all around the south island to display their vehicles. Ford Club Nelson started back in 2001 and in 2003 the club decided to honour the Ford Founders birthday, Henry Ford which is on July 30. Ford’s introduction of the Ford Model T revolutionized transportation and the American industry. As the Ford Motor Company owner, he became one of the richest and best-known people in the world. He is credited with Fordism, the mass production of inexpensive goods coupled with high wages for workers. Murray says all proceeds will go to Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre and Hospice Marlborough. The club will also have a gazebo on site promoting cancer awareness, namely prostate and breast cancer. This year will be the 19th year of the event and will be on Sunday 31st at the Omaka Heritage Aircraft Museum. If the weather is wet the event will be held at the old Flight Timber building site at the end of Waters Avenue, off Battys Road. Stay tuned to MORE FM 92.9FM (Picton, 94.7, Kaikoura, 89.9) for community notices this Friday and Saturday for more information.

BWOF – Building Warrant of Fitness Fire & Safety Systems, your locally owned and operated Building Warrant of Fitness Company has operated in Marlborough for the past 20 years. If your commercial building has safety systems installed, it must also have a current Building Warrant of Fitness (BWOF). Safety systems include Fire alarms, Smoke control systems, Emergency lighting and Automatic emergency doors. A building WOF ensures minimum standards for these systems are met.
Your building warrant of fitness must be renewed regularly by an authorized inspector/IQP. Fire and Safety Systems have independent qualified staff who are authorised to carry out inspections, maintenance, reports and issue form 12A’s for the given features. Fire and Safety Systems carry out building WOFs for new buildings and can renew existing warrants. We will ensure you have all the documentation you need. SNAP Fitness Holly Ewens Smith is the Club Manager for Snap Fitness Blenheim. SNAP Fitness has been on the local scene for 10 years now. Holly says they currently have a deal on where you pay no joining fee and get 30 days free when signing up. This ends on July 30. However, they are extending this to anyone who brings in this article from the Sun Newspaper. So why come to SNAP Fitness? “Here at Snap Fitness we are all about the feeling. Supporting our members to achieve their goals in a safe environment where everyone is welcome and important.” Holly says they know they are making a difference in the life of a client when they come in feeling stressed or anxious from a busy day and then walk out the door with a skip in their step, smile on face and head held high. “We know that being here has helped

them to feel better and really turn their day around.” Assistant manager and trainer Sophie Boyce says they also get a lot of members telling their friends about SNAP Fitness and getting them through the door which is a great indication that we are making a difference for them. Personal Trainer Gillian says that she can see the shift of focus and dedication in her clients when they know they are Holly Ewens Smith on track towards their goals.”

New team at the Grove Tavern New Grove Tavern owners Kayla and Chris Brice are more than happy to stick with the status quo when it comes to why locals come to their pub. “We’re staying with the classic Kiwi pub theme.” The couple took over the business last month and has found the transition a far cry from their former backgrounds. “Coming from a trade background it’s more physical because you are often on your feet all day. The dynamic is different,” says Chris. The transition into publican life was helped from the input of former owner Paul “Flopper’ Phillips who spent two invaluable weeks with them to get them up to speed. “We knew straight away that it was something that we wanted to do,” Kayla says. Chris says the tavern’s location is ideal and is one of the few remaining pubs in Blenheim. They have a current staff of eight with two full timers. So what is the plan with the business moving forward? “It’s a sports pub for sure. We like that, the comfortable side of locals coming to a pub with your mates and family. The standard, favourite New owners Kayla and Chris Brice with their Grove Tavern staff. beers on tap which locals can relate to.”

gardening this week Wet feet: By Wally Richards Recently I have been asked why some plants (and in particular citrus trees) are loosing leaves and look like dying? The problem is root rots and any plants, shrubs or trees that can not have their roots wet for any length of time will likely die unless some remedial action is taken during wet times. In a few cases I have been told that a citrus tree has been happy where it is for several years and now suddenly it is suffering. The reason is likely a change in the flow of rain water which has made the root zone much wetter than in the past. Maybe a shed was build nearby, maybe a concrete path or drive was laid which has changed the course of water and made an area wetter that in the past. We will talk about citrus though there are a number of other plants which are not happy with wet feet. Citrus need to be planted on very free draining soil and one way to ensure this is to make a mound of soil about 30cm tall and plant into the mound. One of the locations I used to live at was so wet in winter that it was a lake a foot deep . Initially I planted in the back yard some specimens that would take up the excessive water one of which was a twisted willow. To grow my citrus trees I cut 200 litre plastic drums in half and made some large drainage holes in the base and on the sides near the base. I then partly buried the container into the soil. This was to help stabilize the tree in wind so they did not blow over. Well what happened is the roots found their way out through the holes in the bottom/sides and the citrus really took off. In winter they were sitting in a lake of water, happy as Larry, with a good part of their root system above the water. This could be a method you could use if you have a very wet section. There is another advantage to this and that is if you move house you can with a bit of effort dig the drums out of the soil cut the extended roots and take them with you to the next location.
I have citrus that have now lived in three different locations. With the amount of rain in many locations there could be a chance your citrus are suffering so best to check. Yellow leaves and leaf drop are a good indication it might be wet under foot. There is an easy way to help over come the wet and allow the soil to dry out quicker. Take a spade and just beyond the drip line and dig a trench about one and a half spades deep. This allows the water to flow into the ditch and quickly evaporate with sun and wind. A big problem this time of the year is mulches over gardens and around plants. Mulches are for keeping moisture trapped in the dry times. In wet times they are deadly. So if you have bark gardens, weedmat or other covers over the soil for moisture retention you need to keep an eye on the plants growing there. If they are starting to look poorly then you may be best to remove the mulch and let the soil breathe. You can help speed up the recovery of any plants suffering from wet feet by spraying the foliage with Perkfection at the 7 mil rate. A month later at the 5 mil rate this will help the plant generate new roots and overcome root rots.
Winter time is also a hard time for indoor plants and losses can occur if the growing medium is too wet. House plants do not need much water at this time and if they are sitting in a saucer that is full of water you may have a problem. There is a simple test you can use to determine how wet or dry a container plant is. Lift the container and if it feels very light then it needs a small drink. If heavy forget it and check a week later. There can be a problem also where the mix has become so dry that when you water it does not wet the mix but flows out the drainage holes. The plant gets only a little drink but not enough. To overcome this add some dish washing liquid to a container of warm water and water the soapy mix over the growing medium. This breaks the surface tension and allows the soapy water to penetrate. Next time you water the water will stay there and not run out. Another way of doing this in summer (not now) is to plunge the container into a tub of water and watch it bubble. When it stops bubbling it is soaked thoroughly and you lift to drain. Watering is an art which takes a lot of thought to get it right all the time. Problems ring me at 0800 466464

Re roundabouts
Rental properties in Blenheim are disgusting. Hey tenants show some pride in your home, mow your lawns and do your gardens. Make Blenheim beautiful people it’s sure worth it.
The problem is that many are so small there is no need to indicate if one is driving straight through, something the AA recommends and certainly followed in the UK, the original land of the ordinary and magic roundabouts, plus the giratory. By the time one needs to indicate left off, one is already off. The real biggest concern is Marl Rds blocking one’s view, in their ignorance, by planting shrubs on them.
New democracy
A credit
Is this a new style of democracy, new Kaihautu. What, that is a different definition of democracy I understand. Thanks Jacinda.
Going for a walk on a dismal day, the gardens in Pollard Park and Seymour Square put a smile on my face, they are a credit to those that tend them.
Brilliant Wednesday Sun I haven’t had your paper delivered for awhile. Even called in to tell you no delivery. But kids getting it too easy now to earn a dollar to deliver papers. I’ve picked it up from Supermarket, if available, and walked to your office to pick a copy up. I get all other crap delivered but yours is the most informative. Last week noticed I could get it through the internet. I managed to do this email “thing” now I’m connected to receive your paper each week. Such good thinking on your part. Cost of paper, and... well... deliverers. Big tick. Thanx!
Re Abortion As usual you’ve missed the point. No one is pro abortion, especially pro-choice or women who have to chose there’s no debate. So let’s debate Pro-Life instead, so in the USA now states who have made abortion illegal are sueing the federal govt to stop them from doing emergency abortions to save the mother, pro-life or just religious fanaticism & hypocrisy.
Rotary boot sale Thanks to the people that turned up to support us selling our wares. Really appreciate it, hope to see you again. From a Boot seller supporting Rotary.
Re Choice Re Choice. I cant help notice your use of words. Women can choose to have a child, choose to carry a child and terminate a pregnancy. Not terminate a child??
Dangerous drivers 69 years driving! There are no dangerous roads in New Zealand only dangerous drivers.
Super guys Someone has recently shown me a you tube channel with a couple of local lads dressed as super heroes, teaching people about safety. The roundabout one is really good. Keep it up Fist Puncher and Foot Kicker
Re Masks You are right, we are in this together and unless we do something now, we will find ourselves in a space where no one will want to be. It’s been proven time and time again that masks do not work. The govt has done a stirling job in creating fear and control. That’s why mask wearing is encouraged. Can’t people see that we are living in tyranny, heading rapidly into totalitarian? Life might look normal for those with blinkers on (and masks) but it’s far from it. If people don’t say no now, we will never turn this around. For goodness sake, wake up and stop being cowards!
Micro managed If masks and boosters really protected against Covid 19, we’d be over this pandemic long ago. We don’t need to be micro managed. Time to return to common sense live and let live.
Eltham road muck up Who ever approved this idea has no idea of how dodgy this is. Good intentions for kids safety. BUT how many kids or adults use it. Hardly any is the answer. Have you ever driven down this ELTHAM ROAD on a winters morning while its raining and parked cars with on coming vehicles. Wake up people this is DANGEROUS. Take the curb out. 1. its dangerous. 2. its a waste of tax payers money. 3. Maybe 1% of cyclists uses it. 4. How many kids actually bike theses days. 5. Green paint would have more of a effect just saying.
Missed opportunity NZ Rugby have missed an opportunity. Rugby has been in decline for the last 5yrs. They should be restructuring from the top not the bottom. The players and coaches are only playing the game the way the Board has asked them to. It’s a billion dollar business and I would guess that their gross profit has been in decline for those 5yrs too. They need to restructure from the top down not the bottom up. The game has changed but NZ hasn’t changed with it. That’s the problem, not the players or coaches !

Talk of the week New seats I wish to thank the MDC for the new seats in Henderson Park. Every time I go over there, there is somebody sitting on them enjoying the peace and quiet. In these times relaxing and consoling ourselves is so beneficial beyond recognition. Thank you again.
Re masks I agree people don’t care anymore. I wear mine everywhere even when people come to my house. Protect yourself that’s all we can do.
Lights Recycling of cans On going to the Resource Recovery Center, it was great to see so many cans being recycled. I did notice though that alot of steel cans where being deposited into the aluminum cans ‘hole in the wall’. There are photographs of the suitable cans above the ‘hole’ making it easier to distinguish between Aluminum and Steel. We have taken the time to go to the Resource Recovery Centre, what’s a couple more seconds to actually put our recycling in the right ‘hole’. Here’s To Recycling.
It amazes me how many people I see driving without their lights on between Picton and Blenheim morning and night when it is dull or dark. Come on folks. Be sensible. Be seen! Be safe! Housing Re Megan Woods remark in a recent article: Claims the only way to solve housing crises is to build more houses. More housing definitely, can I say though, there is a crisis in rental, way too high, above most people’s ability to pay, even with govt assistance. A family of six, living with a kind relative, because no housing, rentals available for 5 bed, under $700 Wk !! Seriously.
Choice You are not terminating a pregnancy, you are terminating a human life. Let’s get that right shall we. It’s not about a woman having a right over her body, a fetus is not a piece of her body. It’s not an arm or her own leg. It’s destroying another person’s life. Strange ideas some people have.

sports talk With Jacob Page
Tone-deaf NZR losing touch with reality New Zealand Rugby (NZR) clearly cannot handle the heat which comes from the All Blacks’ poor on-field performances. I’d suggest NZR’s PR efforts have been worse than anything the All Blacks have produced in this Ian Foster-era. The ignorance and arrogance of cancelling the Sunday morning press call (without Foster’s input, apparently) have been discussed and rightly mocked and All Blacks media manager Jo Malcolm ap-
peared to fall on her sword midweek, confirming she made the decision to cancel the traditional Sunday morning press conference after a test. I doubt she made the decision alone. NZR continue to do themselves, the All Blacks’ team and Foster no favours with their out of touch approach to the media. NZR continues to build walls to keep the media out and they’re creating a vacuum which can only
be filled by speculation of all kinds from people in the sports media who are sick of being mistreated. NZR needs to understand the sports media is there to cover rugby, not serve it. NZR have no right to control the narrative from journalists and if they continue to have an adversarial relationship with the sports media as a whole, then they can have no complaints when things become toxic. NZR need to have more respect
for the job the media does. That means they must gain a collective thick skin, and accept the good and the bad, written and spoken, about the current state of the game in New Zealand. Their media approach by NZR has proven to be utterly tone-deaf and the dis-interest in the All Blacks from the average fan is partly being caused by the holier-than-thou take NZR currently has towards media relations. NZR have not done Foster or Sam
Cane any favours in their bullish approach. Silence will only make all involved more unpopular. It’s my belief the top brass of NZR have little respect for the rugby intelligence of the average New Zealander on the topic of rugby. Yes, we are a passionate bunch of fans with high expectations of the All Blacks but the vast majority know good rugby from bad and are far from the fools those at the top of NZR clearly think they are.
Women sailors called to join the evolution By Chris Valli
Women sailors, experienced and novice, will be descending on the Waikawa Boating Club for the annual Women’s Regatta in September. The notice of race has been posted as an open invitation to women around New Zealand and Australia to come to Marlborough for the three-day regatta and event over the weekend of September 16 – 18. Past years have drawn Olympians and global circumnavigators to join newcomers to sailing and those who have never raced before. The weekend of yacht racing is a wonderful reason for over a hundred women to get together for a bit of fun and personal challenge. Accommodation in Waikawa and Picton is already being booked up by crews planning to be racing in 2022. Event organiser, Julia Thomson, has been managing some social media engagement and has noticed
a lot of excitement for the event from around the country. “There are at least 60 Auckland based women planning to be here”, says Thomson. While anyone can bring their own boat to the regatta, the yachts are mostly provided by members of the Waikawa Boating Club. Some long-time racers in the event have a permanent booking on a particular boat and the owners keep that in their calendar for them. Chris Webb, owner of the yacht named Midnight says having sailed for decades, the most fun had is hosting the same crew in this regatta for three years running. “The teamwork, communication, sailing skill level and ability to have fun, being competitive without raising their voices, inspires me and as the boat owner, I learn a lot too,” she says. For some boats it’s been necessary for the owner to be on the boat due to insurance or technical matters and in some cases that owner is
a male. Event organiser volunteer, Juliet Abbott says the rules of the event have in the past been 50% of the crew could be male with a female at the helm. “In developing the event and making it more about women in sailing, this has been reduced to 30% rounded down in 2022 and the vision is that we will have 100% female crews in the near future. As soon as we can get enough sailors ready and boats that can accommodate a totally female crew, we’ll be there”. Auckland based Evolution Sails is the major sponsor of the regatta. Thomson say Evolution Sails jumped at the chance to be the naming sponsor and they’re delighted to have them on board. “We can see the women’s regatta evolving and even their name fits with that direction for the event.” The program starts on the Friday afternoon with a cruise out to a bay in Queen Charlotte Sound for

drinks and a BBQ and meets and greet. Racing starts on Saturday with two longer distance races up and down Queen Charlotte Sound. Sunday is two shorter races around the cans before everyone heads home. Saturday night is particularly popular with dinner and a guest speaker who will generally be an
inspirational woman sailor. Information on joining the event can be found on the Waikawa Boating Club website www.waikawaboatingclub.co.nz Thomson says, “Anyone is welcome to sign up for the event and as long as we have enough boats, we’ll get them a spot on a crew that suits their level of sailing experience”.
