Green light for Santa parade By Chris Valli

Pure Events Marlborough has come to the party and will pick up and organize Blenheim’s Christmas Parade and New Year’s Eve Ignite

in Picton. In light of Marlborough 4 Fun no longer being in operation, the Marlborough District Council has contracted Katrina Lange and her company Pure Events Marlborough

to run the popular community events until the end of the year. The news comes after Marlborough 4 Fun last month called it quits after 23 years organizing local events amidst the logistical pressures of

gaining sponsorship and running events under the pandemic. One such local event which was axed was the Southern Jam, a week long South Island youth jazz festival. Continued on page 2.

Continued from page 1. Katrina says no plans had been put in place for these events so it’s going to be a busy period for the Pure Events team. “However, having run these events successfully for many years before I left Marlborough 4 Fun in 2018 luckily I can hit the ground running.” Both Katrina and the MDC didn’t want to see the community miss out on celebrations; particularly given so many events were cancelled last year. “They have pulled out all the stops to ensure the community is well supported in terms of well-being and community being able to re-connect in a social and celebratory environment. “I also want to put on the pre-parade

Forty one cruise ships expected in Picton By Glenise Dreaver

The New Zealand Cruise Ship Association schedule lists 907 cruise ships expected to arrive in New Zealand ports in the coming season. Of that number, 41 arrivals in Picton are listed. The cruise ship association’s CEO Kevin O’Sullivan says that while their current list is subject to occasional change, for weather and other factors, by and large the numbers expected are comparable with those planned for the 2019-2020 season, though that was truncated. The visits, he says, have been confirmed by the cruise lines, the port agents and the ports concerned, The first arrival planned for Picton is the huge Ovation of the Seas, with 4180

passengers, due on Wednesday October 26. Its return in November makes it one of two ships expected that month before an influx in December and January. The Noordam, with 1972 guests aboard, will arrive on Christmas Eve – a nice gift for Picton as it was one of the ships whose visits were cancelled after the first round of Covid struck in March 2020. Graham Gosling, Picton Business Group chairperson, says they are anxiously awaiting the Port Marlborough confirmation, expected after a meeting to be held in two or three weeks, saying its members are “very much” looking forward to the coming season. “Picton badly needs this.” Margaret Frisken, a Picton flower ladies co-coordinator, confirms that their programme of corsages for the

Dot’s love of words By Chris Valli

‘Nearly 90’ Dot Scott says her vivid imagination used to run wild as a kid. A resident of Blenheim’s Ashwood Park, she admits her ‘older’ imagination allows her to turn her ‘spare time’ into the creative outlook of writing. And write she does. “I don’t have to do any housework or dishes, so you have to do something to fill that time.” Dot has been writing about the gold rush days of Charleston, on the

Trans-Tasman Shipping Route BioMar Australia has announced a new direct trans-Tasman shipping route between Nelson and Tasmania. BioMar is a world leader in high performance diets for more than 45 different fish and shrimp species in more than 80 countries. The introduction of a new route between Nelson (Bluff, Lyttleton) and Tasmania is welcome news after the Covid pandemic affected supplies causing significant delays for the aquaculture industry. BioMar Managing Director David Whyte says the route which is expected to commence next month will avoid ships going via the Port of Melbourne for documentation and other cargo pick-ups, ensuring faster, cheaper and ultimately a more efficient process for the producer and the customer in New Zealand.”

west coast from the 1860s – 1880’s. Her first book was launched in 2016 but she suggests it took her 15 years to get to the launch date. The synopsis of the book looked at gold miners’ immigration and the lives they led once settled including a look into their married lives. “If you were a doctor’s wife the reality was there was no power and living in a tent with a dirt floor and learning how to cook on a fireplace, it was a bit of a mind shift.” The second book called Winds of Change looks at the lives of the immigrants after the gold rush and where their lives took them. She says because the writing was historical, she prided herself on the research accuracy and attention to detail on the period. The early immigrants referred to in her book(s) feature those who came from the Shetland Islands and the religious factions of the Irish gold miners. One of the historical insights of the Irish immigrants in Charleston was that the Roman Catholic cemetery was located at one end of the town while the protestants were at the other end. The stimulus for the second book, called Winds of Change came about after a visit to Punakaiki one Easter to visit family in Hokitika. However, Punakaiki was booked out and they suggested they stay at the motel in Charleston. “I got really hooked in after coming across stories and photos

at the motel we were staying in. I began to think, there was a story or two here.” I was lucky I had a friend down there who was a fourth generation Charlesonian so she could tell me all sorts and things and it went from there.” The writing bug hit Dot at a young age where her education was through correspondence school and subsequently writing to and fro with the teacher. “My parents sent me to secondary school (Hawkes Bay) because I had no social interaction, so they sent me to boarding school to stand on my own two feet. I had a wonderful History and English mistress and she just loved words. She encouraged me to write. I always had an idea in my head to write a book one day.” Dot took a two-and-a-half-year course with the Australian writing school on writing novels where she learnt how to format and plan it out accordingly. She says the hardest part was writing what was in her head, as it was hard to get it down on paper. “I’d think about a scene and then I found if I gave a name to the person or character, I could see them straight away and put them in the scene. I visualised scene by scene and what was happening.” She tried with several New Zealand publishers, including Whitcoulls, but none of them she says wanted to know about her ideas and concept.

Author Dot Scott says she got really hooked in to the historical narratives of the Charleston gold miners and began to think, there was a story or two here.

“So, I thought blow this, I’ll publish it myself and I went to Copy Press and they were brilliant. They saw exactly what was in my head and what I wanted, and they did it.” She says talking and ‘arm twisting’ with a variety of contacts and experts around the period led to one of many conversations. with a mining outfit who blew up boilers. She asked where she could find such a person which led to a contact who worked on the railways and had done a bit of homework on steam engines and how to blow a boiler. Dot says she knew she had enough

material for a trilogy after coming towards the end of her first book and people were asking when the next one was coming out. When asked what she loves the most about writing she says it’s a love of words and being able to describe things. “I’ve always had a dictionary beside me when I was reading. My mother (Eira Moore) was a huge influence.” The launch of Dot’s second book, Winds of Change, is at the Marlborough Art Society Gallery this Friday @ 6pm.

Top of the South Theatre Fest By Chris Valli

The Upper South Island Regional Finals of New Zealand’s TheatreFest for 2022 will be held in Havelock this weekend. This is the first time they have been held there since 2018 and at least six One-Act plays will be performed. Local adjudications have been held in Christchurch West Coast and Nelson/Marlborough. Four plays will be performed on Saturday night, with doors opening at 6:15pm for 7pm curtain up. The remainder of plays selected will be performed on Sunday from 1pm. Havelock Community Theatre’s play “The Elevator” written by and adapted especially for the Festival by local man Bruce Weston

will be on the Sunday. Tickets can be purchased online through Try-Booking or from The Gallery, Havelock. Costs are $10 to watch one play, or a weekend ticket, entitling the holder to come and go at will, will cost $20. The Festival is part of Theatre NZ’s Festival of Community Theatre. All plays are assessed by an accredited adjudicator. Havelock Community Theatre secretary Ian Cameron says the festival offers playwrights, directors, cast and crew an opportunity to spread their wings and push beyond their comfort zone. “It is a time when anything goes. There will be a wide interest in the performances,” he says.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Sour Crème the Musical is a show put on by Blenheim’s Performing Arts group StageLab. The show is on at Blenheim Musical Theatre from Thursday, August 18 - Sunday, August 21. We asked some of the cast

“What’s the best thing about doing Sour Crème the musical?”

Claudia Richmond Blenheim The best thing is working with the show’s Director Rose Platenkamp who is the best Performing Arts Teacher and the chance to act, sing and dance on stage with my StageLab friends.

Mac Rosene Blenheim I love that we get to perform in front of people and the story is really funny.

Arthur Pinheiro Blenheim The best thing about being part of this musical is that I get to perform, have fun and a great time with my friends.

Letters to the editor Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. A maximum of 150 words please. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even when a nom de plume is provided for publication.

The editor reserves the right to abridge letters or withhold letters from publication. Email them to news@blenheimsun.co.nz or present to our office at 72 High St. Please note that your name and street address MUST be provided with emails.

Ellie Beamsley Blenheim For me the best thing is the fact that we have worked so hard to make it good and it all will pay off when we have a fantastic time during the shows

Joseph Stallard Blenheim Hanging out with my friends backstage and being on stage in front of an audience.

Grace Price Blenheim I like StageLab because it’s fun and exciting and I like dancing, singing and acting. And I like my teacher Rose.

A worrying experience On Sunday July 17 at Clubs of Marlborough the lift was out of order. Myself and a man in his 70’s went on the escalator and he stepped in front of me. Immediately a woman came tumbling down as we were going up, and landed at our feet. We both tried to get her to stand, we couldn’t, and then the man fell too. I tried to get him up but couldn’t, thinking the escalator would automatically

stop at the top with two bodies lying down, but it didn’t. The woman’s hair was catching & pulling her back. Nobody is at the top of the escalator or around to help. I tried frantically to get over the top of them both, no easy matter. I finally did and saw red light inside a plastic container, tried but arm too short, then poked a thing down and it turned it off. Tried shifting the two people off, and dragged the man off.

The lady’s hair was caught then people came off the stairs to help while I ran into main area looking for the manager. His trousers were ripped very badly, no compensation for these were given or any apologies to him or to me. I found this experience very worrying and feel health & safety was threatened by it in such a public place. Sincerely Sandy Topp

He kōrero nā te Kaunihera o Wairau Your local news from the Marlborough District Council

Final call for Council candidates If you’re thinking of standing for Council in this year’s local government elections now’s the time to do so before nominations close at midday on Friday 12 August 2022. To stand for Council, you must be: • A New Zealand citizen • Aged 18 years or older • Enrolled on the electoral roll Elected members can come from all backgrounds and walks of life. You don’t need any special qualifications to stand for Council. An effective elected member brings a broad range of skills to the role, such as: • Decision-making and strategic thinking • Communication and community engagement • Relationship building and collaboration How to get nominated: • Complete a nomination form during the nomination period • Get two people to nominate you. They must be aged 18 years or older and enrolled to vote in the area you wish to stand in • Provide a deposit of $200. This may be refunded, depending on how many votes you receive As a candidate, you need to: • Find out what is important to your local community

• Familiarise yourself with Marlborough’s local government structure and the roles of elected members The main reason people don’t vote is lack of knowledge about the candidates and their views. A successful campaign is one where local residents know the key issues you stand for within the community. Useful tips for connecting with people and getting more votes: • Get out into the community by door knocking, addressing public meetings and talking to members of the public • Look for interview opportunities on radio, local newspapers, websites and magazines • Advertise your views in newspapers or on billboards • Use social media channels There are regulations around campaigning, including how much you can spend and how and when signage can be displayed. Further information is available in the 2022 Candidate Handbook: www.marlborough.govt.nz/your-council/ elections/2022-council-election/ candidate-information-booklet For more information, email the Council’s Electoral Officer at: election@marlborough.govt.nz

Local elections - are you enrolled to vote? With the local elections coming up on Saturday 8 October now is a good time to check whether you’re enrolled to vote. To enrol or update your details you’ll need to fill in an enrolment form. Go online at: www.vote.nz or phone 0800 36 76 56 to ask for a form to be sent to you. To avoid a lengthy process later on, make sure you’re enrolled before the enrolment period closes on Friday 12 August. Local elections are held by postal vote so you need to be enrolled at the right address to receive your voting papers in the mail.

Volunteers of the future Marlborough’s young emergency services volunteers have completed their 2022 training course. Graduates from the Youth in Emergency Services (YES) course were presented with their certificates at a recent ceremony attended by Mayor John Leggett. The eight-week YES course is for young people aged 18 to 24 years with a passion to work alongside some of Marlborough’s great heroes. An initiative funded by the Ministry of Youth Development, YES is designed to strengthen the connection between young people and their community with hands-on engagement with emergency services workers. At the ceremony, Mayor Leggett applauded the Marlborough Youth Trust and Marlborough’s emergency services for providing the training opportunity. “It is a terrific concept,” he said. “You

have shown our young people that they are an important part of our community and that they can make a contribution that alone is a valuable way of teaching resilience and building self- esteem amongst teens.” Those who complete the course are encouraged to go on to volunteer with one of the emergency services to further their learning. Mayor Leggett said he hoped the training was the beginning of a life-long habit for course graduates. The programme involved young people training and working with groups including the New Zealand Police, St John, Coastguard, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Marlborough Emergency Management, Surf Lifesaving and Search and Rescue. Marlborough has run such courses since 2016.

Coding and esports festival Blenheim bound Calling the next generation of coders, professional gamers, and tech-savvy entrepreneurs - a new two-day festival is being hosted in Blenheim from the 26-27 August this year and you won’t want to miss it. Brought to the region by the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce with funding and support from the Regional Events Fund and the Marlborough District Council, Empower Te Rangapikikotuku is a coding and esports festival aimed at attracting young people across the Top of the South (and further afield) to learn more about technology, coding and gaming, and explore career pathways across the sector. The free event has an action-packed schedule with inspiring guest speakers, specialist workshops, tech business exhibition and esports tournaments

The record rainfall in Blenheim during July has resulted in the ground becoming saturated in many areas. Over the past few weeks Council has received calls from concerned residents regarding water ponding and remaining in low lying areas. The groundwater is currently so high that water is not

In some instances this water can be pumped into streams and creeks but in situations where spring flows are occurring the flow out of the ground will continue until the groundwater levels have receded.

Theatre and Shakespeare - Sam’s ‘happy place’ Blenheim’s Sam Lewis was one of 24 students selected from over 5000 to be a member of the prestigious Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company. He recently returned to Wellington where he is studying and tells Chris Valli about the experience and why theatre plays a big part in his identity. 20-year-old Sam Lewis has been involved with performing arts since he was four where he first performed in a speech and drama competition in Westport. “I performed a poem by A.A. Milne called Happiness. After that my Mum saw a spark in me and signed me up for speech and drama lessons with Anne McAuley and it all snowballed from there.” Sam says that the arts are important to him because it’s almost like his lifeblood, adding that the performing arts is what pushes him in everyday life. “It’s a way for me to connect and affect people on an emotional level, I mostly deal in making them laugh, and I think that’s so important to do in life.” Sam says one of his influences is Speech and Drama teacher Anne McAuley who has taught him since he was five. He says most of what he knows about theatre and the craft of acting he owes to her. Other influences are his Mum and Nana, who would often drive him to competitions, and lessons and be there to run lines of script dialogue. During his time in the United Kingdom he was fortunate to see Alex Jennings live in the play, The Southbury Child in London, which Sam says was phenomenal. Jennings is an English actor of the stage and screen, who worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre. Sam got the opportunity to go to the Globe through the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand. The Globe is a world-renowned theatre, education centre and culture landmark located on the bank of the River Thames in

London. However, the opportunity didn’t come without the frustrations of a certain virus that delayed his plans. “There were definitely a few delays in getting to the Globe. I was supposed to go in July 2020, then Covid hit. Then I was supposed to go in 2021, but then Covid hit again, then finally we got the email near the start of this year saying it was all go, which was absolutely fantastic to hear.” Sam says every year there is a nationwide Shakespeare festival, where high schools perform scenes from Shakespeare’s plays at a local regional festival, then scenes from those regionals get selected to be performed at the National Festival. From the regional and national festivals, 48 students are selected for the National Shakespeare Schools Production, where they spend a week in Wellington or Dunedin rehearsing and then perform a revised Shakespeare play. Then 24 of the 48 are selected for the Young Shakespeare Company.”

“The most fun workshop we had was historical dance where we got to learn a few jigs” So why Shakespeare? “I think the reason I’m drawn to Shakespeare, is that in all of his plays there’s an opportunity to connect with the audience, there’s no fourth wall in his script, the audience is with you the whole time, which leads to some great

moments where you can play with them, or shoot them a glance when someone says something sinister, or literally rally them and make them hoot and holler, and I just think that’s one of the most enjoyable things when an actor has the freedom to do that. Plus there’s something so magical about Shakespeare’s language that he uses.” Prose that Sun readers might recognise are; “A wild goose chase” - Romeo and Juliet; “I have been in such a pickle” - The Tempest and “I must be cruel, only to be kind” - Hamlet. He says working with and at The Globe Theatre was a lot of fun, which consisted of a variety of workshops with industry professionals, rehearsals with their fantastic director Emma Manton, and getting to watch a few shows by The Globe Theatre. “The workshops were very useful in terms of teaching us the craft of acting, how to use your voice, your body etc. But definitely, the most fun workshop we had was historical dance where we got to learn a few jigs. Where I learnt the most though, was working with our director, she took us through the ropes of how to use the Globe space. With the globe being a thrust stage we were performing in the round and we had two massive pillars to contend with, it took a bit of work to get used to, but Emma guided us the whole way.” Currently in his second year at Te Auaha (a performing arts school in Wellington) studying acting for Stage Screen, he says it’s right where he wants to be. “This course is very hands-on, there are barely any essays and no exams, it’s mostly on your feet in a

studio working on your craft, or a production, or even working on films.” In 2020, Sam and his thespian friends Aimee Dredge and Tom Hayward founded The Awkward Theatre in Wellington. “It was formed after we realised that we needed a theatre company to put our show ‘Death and Cereal’ on at the fringe festival. The name ‘The Awkward Company’ came about after one of us was ordering a cookie at Subway and didn’t want to ring the bell for someone to come to the counter, so just

stood there really awkwardly, and I just thought, geez we’re really the most awkward people I know, then a light flicked in my head, and thus The Awkward Company was born.” He says the best thing about what he does is ultimately getting to connect with an audience. “Theatre will always be home and a happy place and that’s because of the magic that happens when you stand on a stage and connect with the people in front of you. It’s indescribable that feeling, but it’s what keeps me going.”

Blenheim netballers awarded ANZ Netball Grant By Chris Valli

Blenheim’s Legion Netball Club can take their netball game to the next level after being awarded an ANZ Netball Grant. ANZ Netball Grants give netballers across Aotearoa an opportunity to apply for anything they need to continue playing the game they love – from uniforms and training gear to resurfaced courts and money-can’t-buy experiences. After another difficult year for community netball, where COVID-19 cancelled games and shortened seasons, ANZ is helping to ease the fundraising effort for clubs and teams across the country. Club founder and coach Shana Pinker applied for an ANZ Netball Grant because she needed some help funding the club after spending $10,000 of her own money on uniforms, footwear, and subsidising entry fees since starting the club in 2020 to make sure local rangatahi could play without barriers. Shana started the club for youth aged 12 - 20 who wanted to try a new sport but weren’t sure how to go about it. Some members’ families struggle financially, while some of the kids struggle

with mental health. Local bodies have noticed Shana’s good work in the community, with the club receiving referrals for kids who have passed through Supporting Families and Oranga Tamariki. Legion Netball Club was awarded new uniforms, netball footwear, training gear, fuel vouchers and an entry fee grant to ease the financial burden felt by Shana and to make sure no rangatahi missed out. Without the grant, Shana expected that she would need to subsidise the club’s entry fees for the third season in a row, not to mention the uniforms, footwear and training gear the club needed to function. “I have noticed some of the kids are coming with too big shoes - or holes in their shoes. Last year, my partner and I bought a girl a pair of shoes because she kept falling over. But personally this year I don’t have the funds to buy them new shoes.” The whānau vibe at Legion Netball Club, and Shana’s support, has seen dozens of kids flourish. The club is four teams strong this season and Shana hopes to keep growing. “We’ve seen changes in behaviour. Some of the kids may not have been actively going to school,

but now they have that background support, they can go to school and they find socialising a little bit easier,” Shana said. “My biggest lesson for the kids is about growing, whether that is on or off the court. It’s nice that the kids trust us and can trust us with who

they are.” Shana has always been community minded, gardening for the elderly or unwell, cleaning up the local church, fostering children and running a Taekwon-Do club. Her passion for netball began with her playing in her youth, and she wanted to pass

that love on. “I feel like there is a disconnect with our teenagers at the moment, and I think netball can reconnect our kids to become healthy adults. I wanted to open these kids up to healthy experiences with people they trust,” she said.

Everybody needs good neighbours By Chris Valli

An idea to support and network for those who are lonely in the Marlborough community has resulted in ‘Friendly Fridays’. Neighbourhood Support Marlborough Area Coordinator Charlotte Wood says the decision to run “Friendly Fridays” came about due to the national NSNZ campaign for August which is “Random Acts of Kindness”. “In my role, I often hear about people who are socially isolated or feeling lonely. I wanted to do something positive to help people connect and maybe even make a new friend, so I came up with the “Friendly Fridays” idea. Everyone is warmly welcome.” Charlotte says Friendly Fridays will be running as a trial on the four Friday’s this month. However, if the demand is there she says she’d love to be able to continue hosting them. “At the moment, we have more than 350 Marlborough households registered with Top of the South Neighbourhood Support and that number is growing all the time. People can join by texting/phoning me, emailing me, calling into my office or via our website. People can join as individuals or as part of a street group.” Charlotte says the new location of the Marlborough Neighbourhood Support office in the Community Centre is helping to strengthen partnerships with other local community organisations, such as Age Concern, Greypower and Citizens Advice Bureau. “I’m involved in several local collaborative projects and initiatives. It’s very rewarding.” Charlotte says one such success story

recently was when ‘Cathy’ (name changed to protect the privacy of the individual) a long-time street coordinator and member of Neighbourhood Support, became concerned about one of her neighbours, so she contacted the Marlborough Neighbourhood Support for help. Charlotte says Cathy was concerned about a resident in her street that lived alone, had no family close by and no transport. Cathy realized that her neighbour was becoming socially isolated and so reached out to her to ask how she could help. The first thing she noticed when she was invited into her neighbour’s home was that an important appliance wasn’t working. Her neighbour told her that she was having trouble and didn’t know how to fix it. So, the first thing Cathy did was to help her contact a local firm and book a technician. Charlotte put Cathy in touch with Presbyterian Support about their Enliven programme for seniors. One phone call and Cathy had the information she needed about attending. Charlotte says referrals can be made via a person’s GP or SupportWorks may be able to complete the assessment directly. “Presbyterian Support even has a van to transport people to their day programme at 22 Alfred Street. Perfect! The neighbour was very pleased to hear about the program and is interested in attending.” Charlotte encourages anyone who may be feeling lonely to reach out and ask for support. “Whether it’s through friends or family, a neighbour, or a community organization, don’t be afraid to ask what’s out there. Then find the solution that works best for you.”

BUILD DESIGN RENOVATE DECORATE

Construction sector continues to recover The continued high demand for residential building activity has put the sector in good stead to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. There was a record number of annual new dwelling consents, with 49,773 new dwellings consented for the February 2022 year. This was 25% more dwellings consented than in the February 2021 year. The volume of building work put in place for all buildings in the December 2021 year grew 10.1%, compared to December 2020 year, with the volume

of residential building activity lifting to historically high levels at $8.1 billion. The sector’s contribution to GDP rose 8.7% in the December 2021 quarter, making it the second fastest growing industry. It also contributed 0.6 percentage points to the overall 3.0% national GDP growth. Forecasts in the National Construction Pipeline Report 2021 estimated an increase in building and construction activity through to the end of the forecast period in 2026.

BUILD DESIGN RENOVATE DECORATE Dawson

A true craftsman and one apprentice, keeping the quality and craftsmanship assured.” Phil says with smaller jobs i.e., kitchen and bathroom renovations generally, he does all the carpentry and gib stopping and often does the painting. He says larger jobs are more cost effective to employ the appropriate subbies when needed. He says the best thing about building is seeing the end product and the delight in the clients of their newly finished renovation or build. “There is always in every job, problems, material shortages, faults and breakages, design issues and changes, weather problems causing delays, sub-contractor delays and teething problems at the finish, and of course there’s the challenge of bringing client designer and subcontractor all together for a harmonious process . “That’s what I’ve dealt with for 42 years and that’s what I love, the challenges of eventually a successful build, so sit back and enjoy the process. After 42 years in the building industry, Phil Crocker still takes great satisfaction in a successful building project. Phil moved to Marlborough f rom Christchurch four years ago and is enjoying the lifestyle that only Marlborough can offer. “Sue, my partner and I enjoy the tranquility and cruising around the sounds especially when the kids come for a visit. It’s a chance to get a bit of fishing done.” Phil started his building career in Christchurch in the early 1980s at a time he says when he was building architectural homes on Huntsbury and Cashmere Hills, doing everything from start to finish including retaining walls and landscaping. “Soon after my apprenticeship finished, I went out on my own, spending approximately 30 years being self-employed. With a period of time on wages, I’ve only recently decided to venture back out on my own, working alone but with a recently confirmed larger job, I will be taking on some help. I prefer to keep a small team with myself

We make what you want By Chris Valli

The definition of the word passion is never better exemplified than in the Lounge Suite Company’s Stuart and Sally Daddy. “It’s what we do. I’ve been in the game a while now and as I’ve got older I’ve come to appreciate it’s what I do really well. If everyone (customers) are really happy and you get no complaints, it’s not all bad is it?” Located in Blenheim’s High Street, The Lounge Suite Company manufactures high quality, affordable lounge furniture which it sells directly to the public from its showroom. Stuart has been in the New Zealand furniture industry since 1977 in various capacities working for many of the leading furniture manufacturers, so he knows what he is talking about. His introduction into the furniture game

was a baptism of fire after discovering a skillset in upholstery that literally opened some doors for him. “In those days (in Auckland) factories opened their doors and in you went. There were 700 staff in that factory when I first started making New Zealand made furniture and I started up in the polish shop, didn’t like it, went onto upholstery and became a factory manager.” Stuart says their timber comes from Rapaura Timber, their foam is from Dunlop/ Sleepyhead (New Zealand made) and the fabrics come from Europe and Australia. “We make what you want. We have styles that we can twist in so many ways to suit the client so that it looks different. A standard example is a Molesworth two and a half seater couch. We twist it by putting a rolled arm on it. A different fabric can do wonders.”

Sally says customising furniture to suit the client’s needs or requirements is all about the feel of being comfortable in the furniture. “If you want a bigger or smaller size or deeper, we can change it. Everybody that comes in and sits down they get what they actually feel comfortable on and not just a standard size.” Stuart says the whole lounge furniture ethos is an ‘I love’ experience, whether that is the fabric, the fit for the customer or the right size. “It’s all about the customer satisfaction at the end of the day,” Sally says. “We had a lady this morning that we delivered a sofa to in the pouring rain. She was amazed, it was wonderful and happy as anything and she just had to come in and tell us that. People generally are happy.” One of the unique aspects of the business is the local names of their furniture range which are familiar with Blenheim locals. Stuart says the reason they do it is because

back in the ‘olden days’ they had to pick a theme and tie it in with the local demographic. “The easiest thing we could do was make them Marlborough areas. People in Waikawa buy Waikawa suites - they associate with the name definitely. We have got the Pelorus, the Wairau, the Blenheim, the Lake Chalice chair,” explains Sally. The Lounge Suite Company prides itself on their superior manufacturing process with all the quality and durability of New Zealand made furniture at an affordable price. Stuart says they stand behind their product 100 per cent and offer a 10 year structural warranty on all their furniture. There goes that passion and commitment to customer service and satisfaction once again. Come and visit the showroom at 120 High St, Blenheim and get friendly personal service from Stuart and Sally, who will be happy to help you decide on your new lounge suite. PBA.

Re Supermarkets

All Blacks

If your shop tella hasn’t done a course or is under age, she is NOT allowed to serve you alcohol hence the supervisor. You should ask next time you are in there. Never too old to learn.

How do you describe... I’d sooner watch a school boy match. They might be up against a top team, and they may lose, but you can see the effort of players and team work, to hinder the opposition from scoring more than they wanted. These kids are watching you, and wanting to be a All Black. I think they be better off having a “Wart” on their bum. Too many rules. I expect a comment, but this is my opinion.

Honesty stall

Re Supermarkets

To the dis-honest thief who took 40 Bags off our HONESTY STALL. Times are tough for all but what makes you special to deserve $160 of goods as and when you decide to steal? Pay up after you read this, YOUR ID IS ESTABLISHED.

You may think checking ages at the supermarket is archaic system. You are right, you could be taking the alcohol outside to underage. If that’s what you really want to do. We are not the police, but we do the best we can. If the young person (or anyone) on checkout get it wrong, it is instant dismissal. Also a huge fine to the store. We work as a team to try and look after each other and get it right. At the end of the day is it any skin off your nose. Have a bit of patience and understanding of what it can be like on our side of the check out

Green? So, now the borders are open to all, why haven’t we gone down to GREEN.

Flimsy Council rubbish bags are just that..Flimsy and thin you pick them up n they just rip..Pathetic

Time for change A very sad low point Sth Africa at the weekend for the senior men representing our former national game. Definitely time for change(s)....Out with most of those in positions 1 to 9, those aged 32/33+ & those clearly imbibing excessively in the rugby’s unhealthy, weight gaining fast food sponsor. Plus... most importantly... in with a streamlined, competent coaching panel.

Conflict? So N Tahu is getting two positions unopposed on the Board. To be part of the Board that overviews N Tahu’s own businesses smacks of corruption opportunities. Its like the robber managing the bank.

Football subs rebates I do hope that the football clubs will provide some rebate for the very short playing season. This was a similar scenario for last two seasons, however, no money was offered back. These are tough times, it is time to say something. Otherwise, change season for sport or lose players.

Fluoride Ashley Bloomfield in his last days as Director General of Health has mandated that initially, 14 unfluoridated Councils will be required to fluoridate their public water supplies. During WW2, the Germans & Russians both fluoridated POW camps water supplies. Not for oral health, but to dumb down the POW’s & make them more compliant & easier to handle. Perhaps our Dictatorship is requiring it for the same reasons.

SH1 SH1 @ the Elevation has slumped yet again. A crack has formed which could cause a serious accident. Why don’t they form a temp bypass in the drainage channel next to the road & fix it properly rather than just pour tons of asphalt into the hollow. That’s obviously not working.

Already patchy How is it that Burden Street was resurfaced three months ago, and already has worn patches showing through. Surely the contractor will be made to repair this at no cost to the ratepayers.

Double standards No plastic bags inside central countdown but outside looks like a rubbish tip!

Eltham Rd bike path Council needs to hear the peoples voice as on 3rd Aug this was again put in THE SUN txt talk, I agree with previous messages it’s completely waste of rate payers money and risk on vehicles as the road is narrowed down. We need to raise the voice please people write email to council to make roads safer. I live adjacent to Eltham Rd and I always feel unsafe on that road.

Vape Wow three vape shops and one in Picton, a great future for our children. I’m guessing at least 80% of kids do this pointless past time, bet a lot of parents don’t know that their kids vape. It’s ridiculous, looks stupid but I think they think it’s cool, not even.

Re Abortion In reply to Re Abortion Wed Sun 3 Aug. Telling a woman “don’t do the deed”. Are men not involved?. How do these anti abortionist know the issues behind a woman wanting an abortion. Could have been rape, coercion by a man to do the deed or a life threatening pregnancy. Woman don’t have abortions for the fun of it. Subject closed

Well done George Enjoyed the cover story on Wednesday’s Sun, celebrating a great young New Zealander who is using his skillset to help other people. Well done George Glover, there is hope for our country’s future if you stick around.

Not working SH1 @ the Elevation has slumped yet again. A crack has formed which could cause a serious accident. Why don’t they form a temp bypass in the drainage channel next to the road & fix it properly rather than just pour tons of asphalt into the hollow. That’s obviously not working.

Not a dog park Endeavour Park is not a dog exercise park, there are signs dogs on leash on footpath from Waikawa Road to Victoria Domain. We welcome your texts on 027 242 5266. Abortion is healthcare Your response reeks of misogyny and sexism. You ask what sort of woman wants to kill her unborn? The truth is none WANT to do it but for many it is an absolutely necessary procedure for multiple and often complex reasons. Your ‘remedy’ makes about as much sense as not driving a car if you don’t want to crash. I’ll say it louder for those men at the back who can’t hear: ABORTION IS HEALTHCARE!

Green Waste Was overcharged at the Green Waste in the weekend. A simple error. I emailed MDC and there was an immediate apology and instructions on how to receive a refund. Well done MDC. Your new system will be a winner when it’s commissioned later this year.

gardening this week Planting plants: By Wally Richards Gardeners are buying and planting plants now for the coming season. There are a number of traps and tips which if known will make for a more successful growing season and thus more pleasure for yourself. Let’s start off with seedlings which will likely come in cell packs, 6 cells to a pack. Then there is the punnets where a number of seedlings share the same growing area. Don’t be silly enough to buy root crops in punnets such as beetroot, onions, carrots, parsnips, spring onions as they will never be any where near as good as the ones you grow from seed, planted where they will mature. Big seeds such as beans, pumpkin should also only be grown directly from seed. The results will be ten times better than transplants which for crops such as carrots are laughable as they will never become a nice specimen if they were grown from transplants. The secret to seed growing in an area that they will mature in; is that they get their initial tap root or roots out and those roots do not get disturbed by transplanting. I look for the younger smaller plants that are likely the freshest ones from the growers nursery. These will likely have been kept moist in their growing medium and hence stress free. Even if they are a bit too small to transplant that is ok; you can grow them on outside in a sheltered, sunny spot. While they are getting bigger you do not want to over water them or let them dry out. Over watering makes them soft, under watering can lead to stress. If you can pick the time and day that you plant out, best time is before rain or later in the day when the sun is going down. If you are really smart you spray any plants you are going to transplant a few days before disturbing them with a spray of Vaporgard and Magic Botanic Liquid combined. The few days before transplanting spray of Vaporgard means that moisture loss through the foliage at transplant time is minimal and the seedlings sit up like little soldiers and start growing immediately. This is very important: Before you try to remove the seedlings from their punnet or cell pack you plunge it into a

bucket of water and watch them bubble. This removes all air from the growing medium and also gives the seedlings a nice drink. You then carefully tap out the seedlings without damaging the foliage. They should, being so wet, slide out nicely. Next we inspect the foliage for any pest insects or eggs. In some cases you may have several seedlings in a cell pack or punnet that have their roots intertwined with each other. You have two options you can plant the plug with more than one seedling and in a couple of weeks time cut the smaller ones off at soil level allowing the best fellow to grow to maturity. Or in your bucket of water you can carefully separate the seedlings and have a lot more to plant out. Down under water, they will tease out and separate nicely with minimal root disturbance. But now maybe you have more seedlings than you need for one crop and one harvest. No problem you put all the extra seedlings together in a clump and plant them it the garden. Being in a clump they will not grow much but will hold so that in say a couple of weeks you can lift, divide under water and plant a second crop. Soil preparation is important unless you do what I do. Clear the area of weeds and then sprinkle what goodies you like to use over the area such as animal manures, sheep pellets, blood & bone, Ocean Solids, Wallys Unlocking your Soil, Bi-

oPhos and Wallys Calcium and Health. Now spread a layer of purchased compost over the area to the depth of 3-4 cm. I prefer Daltons compost as it is herbicide free and nice to work with. Into this layer you can plant your seeds or seedlings. Spacing is important so you do not have over crowding. Keep moist with daily light waterings and spray the plants with Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) each week. Let’s upscale to plants such as shrubs, vines and trees which once again you are either buying in a pot or plastic bag. Follow the advice as for the seedlings but when you remove the plant from its grow container have a good look at the root system. If the plant has been in the container for a while the roots will have filled the container and spiraled around the base of it. If left like that and placed into a planting hole you may wonder months or even years later why has that plant not grown? Simple the roots can not get out from the clump they formed in the container. You take your secateurs and at the four cardinal points you cut the root spiral the depth of your blade. The plant will make a lot of new roots and that is what you want for growth. It is a busy time ahead so get cracking with small plantings now followed by more each month. Thank you for the many ‘Get Well’ emails I received in regards my virus/ cold, getting better now but it does take a while.

sports talk With Jacob Page

Fozzie flops predictably as pressure mounts Surely there is only one more week to go of the Ian Foster era. It is not personal, it’s just business at this point, the All Blacks, once feared and admired in the same instance, are staring up at mediocrity under his coaching and his tenure must finish after a loss to the Springboks in the second test this weekend. The first editor to hire me at a newspaper 15 years ago had a saying that “blind Freddie could see that coming” and it sums up the 26-10 Springbok victory in the first test. The All Blacks were a distant second, their attack was pathetic and

the scoreline made the men in black look better than they were. Only a late try put the smallest amount of credibility into the effort. In my 25 years of supporting the All Blacks, I’ve never seen the attack so poor and rarely seen the team hopelessly out of contention with so much of a game still to play. Staggeringly, Foster post-match said it was his team’s most improved effort. Yikes, he can’t be that out of touch, can he? I’ll admit here, I felt two All Blacks’ defeats in South Africa

would be best for the long-term future of the team and I’m halfway to that outcome. It brings me no joy to want the All Blacks to lose but it is for the greater good. The team has been unwatchable for the most part and New Zealand Rugby has to acknowledge this. It might be unpatriotic to want the All Blacks to lose but I, like many, believe this Foster/Sam Cane era is doomed. Come Sunday morning and another convincing defeat likely, I can’t see how it can continue.

Foster has thrown assistant coaches under the bus already and there’s only his head left to roll. Anyone who takes on this role as All Blacks coach knows the rules of engagement, win regularly and save your best performances for the World Cup. Foster hasn’t won regularly, in fact he’s lost more than any coach in recent memory and for that reason, he doesn’t deserve to make it to the World Cup next year. As always, the rugby public have acknowledged the problems far earlier than those on the inside.

MBC Hockey Third Tasman Secondary School Tournament By Chris Valli

The Marlborough Boys’ College (MBC) 1st XI hockey team finished a credible third in the annual Tasman Secondary Schools Sports Council (TSSSC) tournament in Nelson at the weekend. The three games played resulted in a loss, draw and a win to finish second equal on points with Nelson College, however a slight goal difference advantage to Nelson meant Nelson took out second place and MBC third. The relatively young MBC 1stXI competed well in all three games, demonstrating their improved fitness and skill level this year, which was evident with their standard of play improving in each game. MBC’s first game was a 4 – 0 loss against eventual winners Waimea College, a score line that

flattered Waimea with three goals in five minutes in the third quarter after much MBC pressure. The second game was a one - all draw with Nelson College (MBC’s best result against this team in the last two years), with Ben Armstrong scoring a well taken field goal. This building momentum saw MBC dominate Nayland College in the third game with a 3-1 win, with goals to Sam Hamilton, Johnny Pope-Neame and Charlie Renner. The entire 17 man squad played well and ran for each other across the three games. Sam Young and Harry Wilken were outstanding in defence supporting Lachie McNeill and Korban Chevis in the midfield and Mason Herd and Nick Elrick in the attack. Captain Sam Hamilton was pleased with the games as a solid build up for their Johnson Cup

It was a good weekend for Marlborough Table Tennis as teams regained the Perry and Couper Shields from Nelson last weekend. In the Perry Shield clash last Saturday, Marlborough won 36 matches to 30. As in the last four contests between the teams, the result came down to the mixed doubles. MTTA secretary Chris Hood says Marlborough took the Men’s Number 1 Section by 6-3. Alex Kennedy and Nathan Watson won their three singles, but were pushed hard by the Nelson players. Paul op den Buysch took a set from Nathan and had a great match against Alex, just going down by 6-11. 11-3, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9 in a match where both

players showed some good serve and receive tactics. Josh Sim played at number three and as usual gave it everything. In the first match, he went shot for shot with Paul and just lost in a five setter. Matt Millar and Matthias Kronert were undefeated as Marlborough won the Men’s Number 2 Section also by 6-3. Nelson had combination bat players, Kevin Withington and Allan Villar in their side and the Marlborough players had to adopt varying tactics to get the wins. Jason Kennedy lost to the attacking junior player, Joshua Piggott, in his first match but really took it to his opponents in the next two matches. He played a good match against Kevin, just going down by 9-11, 11-8,4-11, 11-9, 11-7.

Marlborough Table Tennis regains shields By Chris Valli

Sam Cane and Ian Foster may not respect the opinions of the average New Zealand rugby fan, but they have seen this downfall from an early point. Give Scott Robertson a free-shot with the sinking ship before the World Cup and then appoint him for the first two years of the next cycle. It’s the only option and he’s the man who can drag the team into a modern style of play. Foster should have some pride and walk away, spend time with family and regroup because this is getting hard to watch.

Chris says Tilly Watts and Sophia Dillon won a single each to go with Jacqui Wood’s three wins as Marlborough won the Women’s Number 2 Section by 5-4. Tilly lost to Chris Cole by 11-13, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8, 15-13 in a match where both players attacked. Tilly was down two sets to love before showing great composure to beat Patricia Martin in five sets. Sophia got the team off to a good start with a three set win over Chris. Iris Scott, a young junior player, won two singles and was hitting the ball very hard with her forehand. Meanwhile, Alex and Nathan led the way as Marlborough took the Men’s Doubles 5-4. They won their matches in straight sets with Alex looping service returns and Nathan putting away loose returns. Matt

and Jason played a different style and came away with two wins. In their last match, they beat the top-spinning pair of Mark and Michael by 6-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9. The mother/daughter combination of Marion and Jacqui were undefeated as Marlborough won the Women’s Doubles by 5-4. Kylie and Barbara won two four set matches. Chris says the overall score stood at 28-26 to Marlborough before the mixed doubles. Marlborough took these 8-4 with every pair getting on the board. Jason and Jacqui, who have won the mixed doubles at the Marlborough Closed on several occasions, won both of their matches in the top section with Nathan and Sophia following suit in the bottom section.

“All too often, the stories I hear about real estate agents have a negative slant. Certainly, I’ve had mixed service over the years with the properties I have bought and sold. Given that I have just had the best experience I have ever had to date, I felt the need to write to tell you about the excellent service I have received from Debbie “the” Webster here in Blenheim. I met Debbie while viewing one of her listings (an open home). I warmed to her character immediately, and the way she communicated told me that she was absolutely doing the best by her client. So much so, that following this and a couple more meetings when I showed my wife around the same house, we decided that we wanted to list our own property with her. Debbie seems to have an energy (manic, but endearing!) and passion that is rarely seen. She is committed to your brand, and cuts through the nonsense. She has never over-promised and under-delivered. Our property took a few weeks to sell, and Debbie took this as a personal failing, looking only at herself and what she could do to get people through the door. She didn’t try to “beat us up” on the price as we’ve experienced with other agencies, and she backed herself on the value she’d placed on our home. We now have the buyer we were looking for, and have gone unconditional - looking forward to the next chapter. I tell anyone who will listen what a great experience we’ve had with Debbie and your company, and can give no higher recommendation than to say I wouldn’t hesitate to call Debbie if we decide to sell again down the track. I have yet to hear someone say a bad word about her, not something I can say for other agents in the area, not by a long shot! She is a star, and an asset to your brand.”
