This will be the fourth Hopewalk in Blenheim and he is confident the public will once again get behind ‘them’ and turn out on the day.

Bary Neal decided he had to do some thing, some way of helping people after losing a loved one to suicide.

Bary says it is great to see that over the years, people are starting to do what we (as a society) never used to do, and open up and ask for help. He says it is still very common for people, guys in par ticular, to bottle things up, and shut up shop, not letting anyone know what is really going on.

Continued from page 1. He says after losing his son he wasn’t in a good space mentally, and like so many people when you are in that dark place, he says he just put on a brave face, smiled when he was in public, but really just stayed at home in front of the television and waited for time to pass.“Very few people could possibly understand the pain of losing a loved one to suicide, never getting a chance to say goodbye, never knowing if there was something you could have done to help, knowing you will never see your boy play footy again, or have him pop around on his way home from work for a chat and game of table tennis, I was really hurting.

on Māori TV on June 7, 2020, and describes his attempts to heal from depression and to help others dealing with depression and loss.

“I read about him and his story on the internet. Rob was in that dark place and wanted that dark place to be gone, so decided to end his life. Needless to say, he is here today to tell his amazing story, encouraging people all around the country. You don’t want to miss hearing him speak.”

In July 2009 Mokaraka was struggling with his mental health and attempted suicide, an experi ence in which he survived. He used this as the basis for a play, Shot Bro: Confessions of a Depressed Bullet, which he toured around community venues in New Zea land for three years, 2017–2020.

Bary says after contacting the Hopewalk movement, he told them his story, and says here we are today, with Blenheim just one of many Hopewalks around the country, and abroad.

The Young Totara award came as a surprise to George. The award recognises the positive achievements of young people, promotes sound role models for youth, and fosters responsible at titudes towards the community.

“Council engaged a landscape architect who has consulted with businesses along London Quay including cafés and galleries, apartment owners and community and business groups and come up with the design which we are now consulting with the general public on,” she said.

Meanwhile, Roma, 91, has been turning up to the bootsale and selling goods for well over 26 years with all the money going to charity, most recently going to St John.

Blenheim Rotary president James Wiley, George Glover and deputy mayor Nadine Taylor.

Last Monday night, George Glover and Roma Wright were presented the Young Totara award and the Paul Harris Fel lows award respectively.

St John volunteer Jo Douglas says Roma’s efforts are appre ciated and they were more than happy to come down on the Saturday morning boot sale and make a fuss.

“She didn’t know anything about it and said she would have been dressed up. She gets her money every week and brings it down to St John and has been doing it for the past five years.”

I am deeply saddened by her majesty’s passing. She has been a fine example of grace and dignity to me. The fact she reigned as the British monarch for 70 years is admirable.

It was definitely sad to hear about the Queen’s passing but no significant change for me to be honest.

This year there will also be a market alley, so visitors will be able to take their favourite Marlborough treats home with them.

Shane DunedinSoal

“We’re also really excited to have part nered with Marlborough Youth Trust this year for our Kids Zone and support this fantastic service for young Marlburians.”

This year the outdoor family-friendly event aligns with the South Island Cheese Festival on Saturday 8th October at Clos Henri, making it the ultimate foodie weekend in Marlborough.“Wearedelighted to bring back one of Marlborough’s favourite foodie events, and the fact we can coincide with another food focused event, the South Island Cheese Fes tival, and really showcase Marlborough as a gourmet destination is really exciting”, said Nikki De Reeper, Feast Marlborough Chair.

Q: What significance has the death of the Queen had on you?

Peter BlenheimMeikle

None really. As a New Zea lander of Dutch heritage I’ve never felt any allegiance to mother Britain or their mon archy.

Marlborough’s iconic street food festival ‘Bayleys Friday Night Feast’ is back for a sixth year on Friday 7th October in Blen heim’s CBD.

The Queen’s passing hasn’t impacted me significant ly but what it has done is started conversations with my children about the Royal Family, what they do and why.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street.

It’s been a time of reflection of the extraordinary changes we have seen in social atti tudes and in the family unit over her reign. The emanci pation of women must be her greatest legacy in every aspect.

I’m part of the younger gen eration, so it hasn’t hit me so hard. Most of my generation couldn’t care less as they are all ‘team Princess Diana’ and dislike royalty.

As the festival continues to grow, Bayleys Friday Night Feast is moving around the corner for 2022, to the Wynen Street Car park, giving locals and visitors more space to taste all the amazing Marlborough foodie delights on offer.

Joseph and Lydia set a date in 2015, they created an event on social media and invited friends and family who have had similar experiences to go for a 7km walk. Their expectation was perhaps that 100 people would show up to connect. However, the event was shared widely on social media, and an overwhelming 3000 people showed up to Walk for Hope – this sent a strong message for the need in the community, and HopeWalk as a Movement was officially born.

Their belief, and now HopeWalk’s call to action, stronger together is not only their ethos as a couple, but it permeates through to

HopeWalk exists to enable those affected by suicide to organise and facilitate walks, or to participate in the Movement and find support, resources and share with people who have similar stories and experiences.

Joseph and Lydia are passionate to break the stigma, shame and silence around suicide. Joseph says “It’s okay not to be okay, and we need to make it a society where people feel safe to say how they are feeling, and not be embarrassed or ashamed. We all have issues.”

A simple walk has become a Movement of Hope

Personally impacted by the suicide of a loved one and dismayed by the lack of support available, Joseph and Lydia Fa’afiu were compelled to create a safe environment to unite people, like themselves, who have experienced similar loss of a loved one. Their mission is to connect others, together, who have or are experiencing grief caused by losing someone to suicide.

HopeWalk continues to grow and partner with other like-minded organisations and community groups to provide a platform for suicide prevention, intervention and postven tion. Joseph has also launched and organised the Lights for Lives event ‘LinkFest’ which is a Health Promotion Festival.

Hopewalk founder Joseph Fa’afiu says no single agency or group can fix suicide. "We have to work together and be encouraged by each other, together we are stronger, together we can turn the tide.”

the culture of HopeWalk as a movement. In Joseph’s words: “No single agency or group can fix this, we have to work together and be encouraged by each other, together we are stronger, together we can turn the tide.”

What was a simple idea has organically grown to a strong movement that now spans the length and breadth of New Zealand, and is growing internationally! “It won’t bring our loved ones back, but maybe ... it will save someone’s loved one,” Joseph shares of his hopes.

Joseph and Lydia believe that the greatest prevention is to empower those who have felt the loss but can bring change, and in themselves be the champion for change for their community, and as Joseph often shares “the greatest champions of change are those affected by the cause.”

“We transact personal business right through to industrial businesses,” he says. No two days are the same. Every day pre sents challenges and the best part is helping people get through a claim or a crisis.

He says one of their points of differences is that their shareholders work in the business and people and businesses can rely on the people and services of the firm.

Located at Level 1, 20 Market Street Blenheim, ICIB Ltd has been operating in Marlborough and nationally since 1975.

“We are independent brokers, and unlike other broker companies, we are not agents of any insurer, we represent our client’s interest 100 per cent.

Broker Manager Wayne Wiffen has 25 years’ experience in commercial insurance broking and risk management in New Zealand and overseas.

To find out more give Wayne and ICIB a call on 027 700 6647 or visit www.icib.co.nz

Wayne says the Marlborough flooding of July 2021 and last month has resulted in ICIB working on many significant claims such as houses, vineyard estates, and businesses that have been affected.

Wayne Wiffen, ICIB Ltd says 'Insurance is part of the fabric of our society and protects what we cherish.'

Wayne says ultimately insurance shouldn’t be a necessary evil.

“It is part of the fabric of our society, and protects what we cherish, making good if it were to be lost, damaged, injured, or destroyed.”

Put your hand up to your face, and you will get stopped, and you’ll get accused of lying. One cop in particular.

Went to the Aramex (ex Fastway) depot to see why my parcel hadn’t arrived. Saw a great stockpile of undelivered parcels due to driver shortage. Not good.

Talk of the week

Had a baby at Wairau Hospital recently. We owe midwives (and all hospital staff!) our greatest thanks - what a wonderful job they do, bringing life into the world, taking care of us mums and babies, overworked and underpaid. You deserve more. Thank you.

I travel this road each morning and can’t be lieve the flood water from August’s downpour is still spilling across the road, just past the Brancott Road turn off. Come on landowner..... sort it out.

My poetry, it really stinks

Re Redwood Countdown, but Countdown in Losinggeneral:the plot.

Take care

I find it unbelievable that a gang can publicly fly an offensive flag and wear clothing with offensive messages and think it’s ok. They are denigrating their own race. Time for Iwi to stand up and sort it.

The Dutch city of Haarlem is 1st, banning all meats ads-so there goes McD’s, KFC, BK, menu pictures, butchers all deemed carceno genic-aha, but wait, there’s more; with a little larger than the circulation of The Sun, does that mean we in Nelson/Marlborough will also be stopping cancer causation habits, banning wine and alcohol ads and billboards. Sad day

Makes me sick. I wouldn’t want to live amongst these disgusting people who are doing these cruel acts. I don’t think I could have a cat knowing this may happen to them. Which is very sad as I love cats.

Cruelty

We reserve the right to publish at our discretion. Please note the opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the Sun management.

About the all blacks and their training tops, what colour do you think they should wear, you clown .

Re Countdown

Rest in peace Queen Elizabeth you served your countries proud, end of an era, a sad, sad day.

Gerald Hope got your flyer in mail from you, good on you, but you said you would work hard for Wairau Awatere ward, so you have had last 3 years to get Renwick their recycling bin back is that happening anytime soon?

No stock, little service. Rude staff.

Countdown Redwood has gone downhill. Empty shelves low in stock, not enough staff. Not good enough!! Shopping elsewhere now !!

Another ‘rubbish’ poem

Dog cruelty in Waikato. Don’t give covid as an excuse as to why people keep 3 dogs to a kennel in their own faeces, starved. Put down the owners instead. These people cant be educated, they don’t care. Phone in people, do something. Disgusting pieces of human. Give me a dog over people any day.

Driver shortage

Offensive

People are getting pulled over and ticketed for cell phone use, and their phone is in their hand bag or on the other seat.

We welcome your texts on 027 242 5266. Limit to 70 words please.

So many comments from people around this town about cats going missing or being trapped etc. it’s been happening as long as I can remember in Blenheim.

You and your barista skills will be missed.

Achieves nothing

Political policies and procedures will achieve nothing on their own, only when we the people unite in truth and harmony to do what is right and good will we save the planet. We are one with all life.

The Queen. R.I.P I remember as a young 8yr old, the whole Blenheim School turned out to see her in Pollard park. What excitement for 2 seconds. Waving flags and I guess missing school. We all used to cut out and save any royalty photos we could find in magazines. On looking back, my mother and others fashioned themselves on what royalty was wearing, similar to what is happening now. No doubt Elizabeth stuck to what her original speech stated. So well done in your lifetime.

With no disrespect to the Queen for her amazing longevity and service, do we really need a public holiday to mourn?

Another pressure for small business and countless other areas/people too I’m sure.

Totally agree with you Countdown Red woodtown used to be my go to supermarket, not any more service almost non existent especially early morning which is my preferred time to shop. Now a regular customer at New World where the service is excellent at any time of the day.

Vector Free Marlborough (VFM) wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) to parts of Molesworth Station for the purpose of controlling possums. to plan appropriately for next Applicationsyear. are to be made in writing

Most land in the permission area is administered by the Department of Conservation but several small tracts of land held by various private and institutional owners are also included. Coordination with affected leasehold farming operations remains in place. The Acheron road is excluded from aerial application of 1080 in this operation. A detailed map may be obtained from VFM as per contact details below.

The Acheron East permission area takes in approximately 66,168 hectares between the Acheron and Clarence catchments. The boundary of the permission area extends from the vicinity of the Acheron Campsite in the southwest and heads north to the vicinity of Isolated Saddle, taking in the east-facing catchments immediately west of the Acheron Road. From Isolated Saddle, the permission area extends to its northern most point at Wards Pass before following the Rachel Range south, taking in the Guide River and Half Moon Stream catchments and excluding the Awatere River catchment, thence in a north easterly direction to St Bernard peak at the southern extent of the Inland Kaikoura Range, before turning south to the Clarence River. The permission area then follows the Clarence River south-west before turning west toward the confluence of the Acheron and Clarence rivers in the vicinity of the Acheron Campsite.

Williamson and Stead should be on hot-seat

The possibility is there that either Shane Bond or Daniel Vettori could beWilliamson’sready. captaincy has gone backwards.Hehasbecome too passive and timid which could be partly Stead’s fault as well. Latham is an option in limited overs but I’d keep William son in test matches.

awful.Toooften, the Black Caps gained control in the field through the bowling of Trent Boult, then let the gameWilliamsondrift. and coach Gary Stead appear to lack a killer instinct especially against Australia - it’s like mental block.

The series outcome should be seen as unacceptable, not because Australia won all the matches, but because we rolled-over so easily.

Zimbabwe gave the Aussies a tougher time the week before and actually won a game.
