Diabetes New Zealand is calling on Pharmac to fund a “life-changing” device which can measure diabetics’ blood sugar levels instantly.

Diabetics can now measure their blood sugar levels through a new CGM system, which launched last Tuesday.

The Freestyle Libre 2 is a small

wearable sensor that attaches to the back of the wearer’s arm or leg and shares glucose data to a smartphone app.

Diabetes New Zealand chief executive Heather Verry says the fact that diabetics don’t have to prick their fingers every few hours, gives people the opportunity to better manage their diabetes.

Daniel Burrow says being on a CGM has changed the self-management of his diabetes significantly.

CGM device has made my life much easier

Continued from page 1.

Verry says the system was publicly funded in Australia and the UK, but unfortunately the new system was not funded by Pharmac, she said.

“It’s a real issue for us because it’s an equity one and only those that can afford it will be able to take advantage of such wonderful technology - and at $50 a week it’s a huge cost.”

Blenheim’s Daniel Burrow, 16, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on December 29 2021.

He started using a CGM last December and uses the ‘Freestyle’ brand. He currently takes insulin shots though has been

thinking of switching to an insulin pump if it gets funded.

Daniel says being on a CGM has changed the self-management of his diabetes significantly.

“It’s made things a lot easier because I don’t have to just leave the room to go use a lancet to check my blood levels and with it I can just pull out the reader and scan it to see my levels,” he says.

Meanwhile, Geri Plant hopes that constant glucose monitoring devices become funded.

Geri, 34, has insulin-dependent diabetes and has been since her diagnosis as a 16-year-old. Geri has been using the Dexcom system for just over a month now and says she was lucky enough to be given a trial by her diabetes nurse.

“I have loved the convenience of using the system alongside my insulin pump. My pump links to the CGM system and can adjust my insulin needs and alarms when

my blood glucose levels are going high or low,” she says.

“They have made my life so much easier and I know they will be of great benefit to so many other diabetics.”

Geri says her husband can also access her glucose readings via an app on his phone so he can see if she is having a severe ‘low’ and get in touch with her to insure that she is okay.

“The CGM gives me such better control, I can see my levels at a glance, I feel safe at night that I am not going to drop low and not notice and have a seizure, with my levels being more stable I have more energy and generally feel better.”

Geri says she is lucky to get a disability allowance from WINZ which is $70 per week to go towards the cost of a CGM. However that does not fully cover the cost of having one which is $380 per month.

Pine Valley Open Day

Remember the days of the Pine Valley Outdoor Centre? Children and parents used to laugh a lot?

If you have ever attended a primary school in Marlborough there is a good chance you attended a camp at the Northbank site.

This Sunday, January 22, the Pine Valley Outdoor Centre is soon to host a centenary celebration. It will

be 100 years since the school first opened on the Northbank, and 40 years of being a community camp.

To recognise this occasion, the Pine Valley Trust has organised an open day to share some history and the jolly good time that PVOC provides the local community.

Pine Valley Trust Chair Jess Ellis says for the last 100 years, it has

been a place for the children, and that legacy continues with the youth of Marlborough being the heart and focus of everything they do.

“The old schoolroom will be set up with historical gear from Marlborough museum for a trip back in time. The adventure playground and water slide will be open for everyone to enjoy. The BBQ will be hot and

ready to sizzle a sausage or two,” Jess says.

There is no charge to visit on the open day and Jess says it is a great opportunity to scope out the scene to rekindle childhood camp memories or dream of possible futures.

The playground and water slide will be open and is free. All welcome.

Zeus requires help

A 10-year old Siberian husky who has a wonderful nature and affinity to help people requires financial help.

Zeus is a certified Canine Friends Pet Therapy dog and visits local rest homes, Alzheimer’s facilities and community groups in Blenheim.

Z eus has a chronic bronchial cough and has recently developed other complications including an ongoing bladder infection resulting in multiple vet visits over the last couple of months.

Owner Garth Haylock says Zeus has been ‘incredibly loved’ by himself and wife Melissa over the last four years.

“We have saved hard and supported him with ongoing vet treatment. We feel bad having to ask for help or potentially not being able to offer Zeus the best possible life,” he says.

Garth says they took out cover with Southern Cross pet insurance, but due to his chronic cough issues at the time it was not covered as a pre-existing condition, along with any treatment or medication.

“Due to rising insurance costs we had to cancel the cover, which we were unable to claim against anyway and put the money into his expense account instead, this enabled us to have a couple of thousand dollars aside, but unfortunately that isn’t enough in this case,” says Garth.

Garth says Zeus came to them after they lost their first two Huskies while they were involved in helping foster rescued dogs for Husky Rescue at the time.

“Zeus was being transferred from a council pound in the North Island and when we met him we knew that we wanted to keep him, he has an incredible character,” Zeus joined Canine friend’s pet therapy in 2021 and subject to Covid restrictions, has been regularly visiting a local rest home fortnightly.

A Give a Little page was set up last Friday on receipt of another vet bill just over $1000 and k nowing that ongoing tests and treatment will be coming soon

with more expenses. The Give a Little page goal is $5000 and will give Garth and Melissa the peace of mind to identify whether Zeus has pneumonia or another lung problem.

“The money will go some way to treat a serious urine infection (which Zeus has had two courses of antibiotics already since November) and cover the recent bills to clear the credit card.”

Garth says an ideal outcome would be to stabilise Zeus’ cough and lung problems and to get

his regular medication down to lower doses so the steroids don’t impact on his immune system so severely.

“Ideally treat his bladder infection or any other factors and improve his health and well-being for a few more quality years of life.”

To make a donation, the Give a Little page is www.givealittle. co.nz/cause/help-zeus-continuehis-pet-therapy-work. At the time of writing $410 had been raised thus far.

Climate site set to begin

Site works for the Marlborough Mile climate site started on Monday in Adams Place.

The area, at the corner of Market Street and Maxwell Road, will be fenced off as contractors prepare the site for a new sculpture. Pedestrian access will remain as will access to surrounding businesses.

The Marlborough Mile project, instigated by the Blenheim Business Association, consists of six key sites within the CBD which are being upgraded to reflect Marlborough’s heritage,

industry and history.

Several sites have already been partially completed including the aviation site at Liz Davidson Place and installation of the historic Echo masts at The Quays. Other sites in the plan include Market Place, Bythell Place and Stadium 2000.

The work at Adams Place is expected to take around three weeks.

Any heavy machinery work will be done before 8.00 am so as not to disturb retailers

and work will be completed in phases to preserve pedestrian thoroughfares at all times.

The work involves removing the blue archways at the entrance to Market Street, which is due to happen mid-January.

The Heads nor Tails sculpture, known by locals as ‘the Hand’ is being relocated further down Market Street on to a new plinth.

The new climate sculpture is expected to be craned into place during the last week of the work.

Restricted fire season for Marlborough

A restricted fire season is now in place for all of Marlborough, effective from 8am Monday, January 16.

District Manager, Grant Haywood says this means anyone planning on lighting an open-air fire in Marlborough will need a fire permit while the restriction’s in place.

“To apply for a permit, go to checkitsalright.nz and follow the instructions,” he says.

“If you have a permit you will also need to follow the conditions listed on it to ensure your fire is safe.”

Grant Haywood asks everyone to take

care and think about the wildfire risks before lighting a fire or doing activities that could cause a spark.

“It’s still quite green around the Marlborough countryside, but it’s beginning to get hotter and drier, and we’ve got some warm and windy days forecast,” he says.

“These conditions make it easier for a fire to get out of control and mean there’s plenty of vegetation that could fuel a fire as it dries out.

“Before you light a fire, or do an activity that could cause a spark, go to www.checkitsalright.nz and check the

conditions.

“Even with a permit, anyone planning on lighting a fire should check the conditions, and hold off lighting if it is windy and hot.”

“Our check it’s alright tool will tell you if the conditions are safe, or whether you should hold off.

“If you’re doing any activities that could cause a spark, do these in the cooler parts of the day when it’s less risky.”

“One spark is all it takes, so please be vigilant and follow our safety tips to reduce the risk of a wildfire this summer.”

Seussical Junior - providing students insight into theatre life

Marlborough Academy of Music’s production of Seussical Jnr is set to take the stage this weekend after two weeks of rehearsals following their Summer Intensive program.

After the success of last year’s inaugural program where they staged High School Musical Jr at the ASB Theatre this year they have 36 students in the cast of Seussical Junior plus three senior students who are interns, learning what it takes to produce a show

MAM Director Alison Dight says she chose Seussical after hearing good things about Seussical from her musical theatre colleagues around the world.

Alison says it was a lot of fun last year and the kids have created some very close bonds with their cast mates that continue today, she says. The youngest cast member in Seussical is six years old while the oldest cast member is 15.

“It’s a bright, exciting, fantastical show with so much positive energy. It shows us the opportunity to really get into costuming and set building which has been really fun to create something wacky and just a little odd. I also love this show as it’s a real ensemble show.

The ensemble changes costumes

five times and are very involved,” she says.

Alison says one of the aims of the Summer Intensive is to give students a real insight into the many areas of theatre life. She says not everyone finds their passion on the stage.

“For some it will be creating costumes, building sets, tech such as lighting and sound. We want to train this next generation up into these roles. Already some of our students from last year now work for the ASB Theatre which is fantastic.”

Alison says they were to have a

cast of 40 which is their limit but unfortunately they’ve seen a few broken bones and illnesses over the holidays causing students to need to pull out.

“We have a wonderful team of staff and interns this year. Louisa Thomson returns as Production Manager, as do Amy Potts as Choreographer and Ian Clarkson as Musical Director.

“This year we are joined by Jessie Sawers as vocal director and recent MGC head girl Paige Materoa as Assistant Production Manager. We are joined by our interns Riley Houia, Sienna

Wheeler, and Jed Cornelius who were all in the cast last year and have stepped up into the Internship roles,” she says.

A l ison says this show has quickly become her favourite show for children to watch.

“It brings to life the characters of Dr Seuss in a way that is funny, high energy, and exciting. I believe with its catchy songs, eye-catching costumes and set, and touching story, this show isn’t just for little kids but for the whole family. We have worked hard to keep ticket prices down so that families have an affordable

outing this summer,” she says.

The show’s sponsors are Marlborough Tour Company, Fulton Foundation and Dance on Grove.

The production will have four shows at Marlborough Boys’ College. The Friday show is at 2pm, Saturday 10:30am and 2pm and Sunday, 2pm. Children are $15 (under four free) and adults $25. A family pass of two adults and two children is $75.

Dear Editor

Friday last I got a letter from Waka Kotahi telling me our wheels had run up a toll bill of $2.70, plus the usual add-ons. My first throught was “D’oh!. Wither Road’s been renamed Northern Gateway Southbound!” but non-stoneage son informed me that they were talking about a Dorkland highway.

So our wheels had skipped over Cook Strait and gone driveabout, coincidentally on the day I’d been jumping through Waka Kotahi’s hoops - including a blood sample to get a new drivers licence, turning 86 as I did this backend.

Anyway, only a 20 minute wait on the 0800 line let me talk to a nice lady who looked into things and scrubbed the bill. Wouldn’t have paid to ignore the nonsense though as I can imagine the debt collectors arriving at the door afew months down the track.

Funny old world where they can track us fairly law abiding folk, while the lawless oafs have caused Big Brother to close off the little viewing spots at Taylor Dam with boulders and a barrier arm.

Yes, the gas and rubber burners had ripped up the nice grassed areas once too often, so we tax and irate payers had to fence ourselves out.

Very standard. Taylor Dam Reserve is still a haven we are lucky to have, for all that.

Happy New Year folks.

SH1 Weld Pass night closures from Sunday 22 January

Weld Pass, on State Highway 1 south of Blenheim, will be closed between 8.00 pm and 6.00 am for two weeks from Sunday 22 January until Friday 3 February so maintenance and improvements can be made System Manager Top of the South for Waka Kotahi, Andrew James, said contractors will be carrying out essential structural asphalt work to strengthen the road surface.

“This work will involve removing the old road surface and adding new, deeper layers. It is about making sure the highway is properly maintained and kept safe for the thousands of vehicles that use it every week, and is similar to the approach we took last summer season,” Mr James said.

“A full road closure for night works is necessary given the Weld Pass is very narrow. When our machinery is operating there is not enough road space to let traffic through therefore it would be impossible to do this this

work during the day under stop/go traffic management without causing extensive traffic delays,” he said.

“There will be one scheduled opening each night at midnight, to allow queued traffic through the works site.”

Waka Kotahi has worked closely with the freight industry in planning this programme of essential work and access will be available for emergency services at all times.

While the work on Weld Pass is underway, four nights of work (22-25 January) is also planned on SH1 to the south on the Hundalees hills, making the most of the Weld Pass road closure.

SH1 will be fully closed from 10.00 pm until 5.00 am on the Hundalees these four nights.

People should check these closure confirmation times before heading off at: www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/ regions/11

Picton in line for sewer pipe renewals

Ongoing work to repair the legacy of earthquake damage to Marlborough’s earthenware wastewater pipes is entering its next phase with the fourth stage of work starting in Picton on Thursday 26 January. Approximately six kilometres of earthenware sewer pipe will be relined and more than 180 lateral connections to households will be either relined or replaced to the boundary over the next six months.

Council Three Waters Projects Engineer Graeme Jackson said most of the old earthenware pipes in Blenheim and Picton date back to the 1960s and 1970s and are in need of renewal due to severe cracking from ground movements. Relining involves inflating a new pliable PVC pipe within the old earthenware pipe using steam.

“The technology is effectively putting a new pipe within the existing host pipe. The new pipe is much smoother and stronger than the old one, extending the service life of the sewer pipes. This technique is a much faster, less invasive and efficient renewal method, which greatly minimises the disruption to the public,” Mr Jackson said. So far more than 14 kilometres of sewer pipework and at least 500 lateral connections to properties in Blenheim have already been relined

Contractors work to reline Blenheim’s earthenware wastewater pipes with the new pliable PVC pipe or replaced. The entire upgrade is expected to take 10 years across Blenheim and Picton, and will involve up to 25km of pipes - the distance from Blenheim to Tuamarina and back again.

Reline NZ LTD, a division of Hydrotech, is the contractor for this project. They will carry out a letterbox drop the week before work starts and door knock all affected residents as the project progresses. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2023.

The Austin 7 was produced from 1923 until 1939 in the United Kingdom. It was nicknamed the ‘Baby Austin’ and was at that time one of the most popular cars produced for the British market and sold well abroad.

Owen recalls a moment in his formative years which brings a smile to his face.

“I actually got pulled up by the police for driving an unregistered and unwarranted car on the road,” he says.

“They used the loud speakers out the window back in those days.”

for the job and I got it. There were blokes a lot more qualified than me with UE (university entrance). I was a bit lucky.”

Of course any keen motor enthusiast has the need and desire to ‘cruise the streets’ to show off their wares. In the case of Owen he met his future wife Wendy (nee Marson) on a Friday night driving with his mate who also got friendly with Wendy’s sister.

“They wouldn’t leave us alone. Everywhere we went, there they were,” smiles Wendy. “We ended up picking them up and we (his mate and him) both ended up marrying the two sisters,” laughs Owen.

Owen and Wendy married in 1969 and 54 years later (this April) Wendy says Owen like a Classic Car gets better with age.

“I don’t think you can find anybody as lovely, kind and gentle. He’d do anything for anybody and is just a nice man,” she infers.

repowering older cars.

It helped that Owen’s Mum and Dad were away for the weekend but alas they found out about the misdemeanour shortly after.

The road to a lifetime of all things mechanical came through a fiveyear apprenticeship with the then Marlborough Motors in High Street in December 1962.

“I was sick of school. I did the wrong course at school. I used to sit up in the French class looking down on the guys in the engineering shop and asking myself, “What am I doing here?” he said. “I didn’t get school cert so I went looking for a job. 75 guys applied

Owen says Marlborough Motors was a great place to work with his first week’s wage being two pounds, 19 shillings and sixpence ($6).

The car sales yard was the biggest in Blenheim at the time and was the dealership for Jaguar, Landrover, Citroen, Fiat and Renault and provided the budding enthusiast the opportunity to work on a variety of vehicles. Marlborough Motors also ran a large used car yard which meant Owen used to ‘fix almost anything.’

The business closed in 1967 and Owen transferred the last six months of his apprenticeship to K A Hale and Co (now Trotts Auto Spares) in Main Street where he worked for eight years running the workshop, specialising in

In 1976 he started out on his own establishing Marlborough Auto Repairs, taking over the business on the corner of Main and Stuart Streets, known as Briggs Motor. With a partner he purchased property and set up Marlborough Auto Sales two years later. The business operated until 2006 when he decided the focus was to concentrate on repairing classic cars from a site in Alabama Road at the old Apex Meats building.

In 2011 Omaka Classic Cars opened its doors to the public showcasing a revolving collection of about 60 vehicles at a time. The collection covered the period from the pioneering vintage car era to cars of today. Marlborough businessman and owner Ron Stewart had been collecting the cars since 1992. He and his family set up the Marlborough Motoring

Trust with a view to preserve them. The range includes Austins, Zodiacs, Fords, Holdens and Jaguars. It was during this time Owen came on board with his skillset especially when it came to Jaguars.

His longevity in the trade, he says, was through developing a skill set and working alongside people who knew their craft and were hands on teachers in every sense of the word.

“Lloyd De Mante was a bit of a legend when it came to engineering and mechanical who was the service manager. Then there were the Topp brothers (there were three of them) who were great teachers. I used to go along to night school and realised how much I knew that the other guys didn’t. They might have been working on a Ford Cortina and done a few of those but nothing

else. I was doing a different job every day and exposed to a whole range of vehicles,” he says.

“We had turns in the lube bay because one of us had to do that every week. We even had turns sweeping the floor and not just the apprentice boy.”

The 75-year old admits it’s hard to believe he’s been 60 years in an industry where he truly feels he still continues to learn every day. Owen officially finished ‘work business’ with Omaka Classic Cars in December. However he says he will continue to do voluntary work on cars including restoration work for himself.

“It changes so much in the motor trade. I’m not a big fan of the modern day electronics in cars. Everything you do is something you haven’t done before, it’s what I enjoy. I prefer to do one I haven’t done before,” he reflects.

75 years of marriage a success

Blenheim couple Les and Betty Smith celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, December 20.

Blenheim Sun journalist Chris Valli spoke to them about the key to a successful marriage and the secret to their wonderful life together. 1947 - 2022. 75 years.

It’s a lifetime and then some. What’s that saying? Behind every great man there is a great woman?

The saying is more than apt for Les and Betty Smith as it seems indeed that the success to their 75 years of marriage stems from the old school values of kindness and love, let alone, the unconditional love and support they have both given each other.

In good times and bad, sickness and health. Les and Betty were both born and bred in Westport. The town was established in 1861 and is the oldest European settlement on the West Coast.

The current population of Westport as of June 2022 was 4,290. It was two locals in 1947 that got locals ‘chin wagging’ about a marriage that has seen the test of time.

Les says he first met a then 12-year-old Betty when he was delivering bottled milk for what was then called the ‘United Dairies’. United Dairies was a former United Kingdom-based creamery, milk bottling and distribution company.

“All the (state) schools got milk in those days,” he recalls. “She wanted to go for a ride on the motorised cart and truck, so I took her

for a ride.”

Betty worked in the local Westport dress shop, owned by Les’ Dad’s sister.

A builder for many years, Les worked for the Ministry of Works where among his many feats he helped build the St Joseph’s Hotel in Westport and the bridges in the Buller Gorge.

The New Zealand Ministry of Works and Development, formerly the Department of Public Works and often referred to as the Public Works Department was founded in 1876 and disestablished and privatised in 1988.

For many years the Public Works Department undertook most major construction work in New Zealand, including roads, railways and power stations.

Daughter Pauline says when her father got to 60-years of age, he decided to move to Blenheim as he thought, ‘he wouldn’t live

that very long’ and to be closer to her and her own husband.

“He thought he was dying,” Pauline laughs. The couple had four children including oldest Pauline. Pauline says her parents greatest attributes to the marriage is that Les has always looked after Betty through helping her cook and looking after the house maintenance and domestics.

“They really care for each other,” she says. “They are a very loving couple and they absolutely love their grandchildren (seven) and great grandchildren (twelve).”

The couple now reside at Redwood Care Centre and Village in Cleghorn Street.

A card addressed to them both sits on the counter in Les’ room from one King Charles III and spouse Camilla, Queen Consort of the United Kingdom which reads “I am delighted to hear that you are celebrating the Seventy Fifth Anniversary of your wedding day and send you my warm congratulations and good

wishes on this splendid occasion.” Yes, it’s a big deal alright.

When 95-years-young Betty is asked what is Les’ greatest quality she considers the question with poise and purpose. Betty was 20 when she got married. “He’s very kind and thoughtful. I know we were very young when we got married,” she reflects.

Les is emphatic when asked the same question. “At the moment, she is the boss,” he laughs. “You have arguments, you have problems, you have to respect each other and that is what it’s all about.”

“Go ahead and get married. The best thing about marriage is having a family, and enjoying playing games with the kids growing up,” says Les.

So how would they define love?

“You have your arguments and then you make up. I don’t think couples these days work on it enough. They have an argument and then they’re divorced. You have to work on it.”

Summer NCEA results available

Students can officially check their NCEA (National Certificate in Educational Achievement) results online.

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) said final results for more than 160,000 students would be available via its website.

Students could log in to find out how they had performed in last year’s exams, whether they had achieved an NCEA qualification, and if they did well enough to get merit or excellence endorsements and University Entrance.

They would also be able to see if their school had awarded them learning recognition credits, and if so, how many.

The government allowed schools to allocate the extra credits to make up for pandemic-related disruption to learning and students were eligible for up to 10 at NCEA level 1 and up to eight at levels 2 and 3.

Te Kura (formerly known as the Correspondence School) said its summer

school would help students who needed more credits for an NCEA qualification or University Entrance.

NZQA said students who had forgotten their National Student Number (NSN) or student login details would be able to get assistance from a chatbot on its website.

The qualifications authority also said it had extended its contact centre opening hours until 8pm tonight, with extra staff available to answer students’ queries about their NCEA results.

The contact centre could be contacted on 0800 697 296 or by e-mailing helpdesk@ nzqa.govt.nz.

NZQA said students would be able to access their assessed NCEA exam papers online from 24 January and students could then apply for a review or reconsideration if they believed an error had been made in marking.

It expected to release results for New Zealand Scholarship exams on 8 February.

Joke ... error of judgement

Regarding text in last weeks paper mentioning “Looney” of LEAHY - this was in-fact a practical joke that should have never been sent to the paper. It highlights the issue we need to think about what we do and say sometimes. The sender of this text is sorry for the error of judgement .

Picton lights

In response to letter to the Ed Jan 11. New Year Eve Picton Lights. Don’t blame Picton, its the Council’s fault. They didn’t want to put buses on for New Years in Picton just because of cruise ships and short of bus drivers. Don’t forget we have taxis and taxi vans.

Anyway was a good night in Picton.

Well done

Well done Columbus coffee, Mitre10. Friendly staff, good service, lovely food and coffee. AND they don’t have a surcharge for the public holiday.

Unlike coffee shops in town who did on the one public holiday they did open. Oh I believe they were only open for the visitors!

Heads up, Why Not Cafe in Kaikoura charged surcharge, plus same for credit card and have put up their coffee $1.00. So not going there again.

Hard going for business

Whoever and whatever your business is, you have no business acumen. A person who claims it’s so hard !!

Didums!!

Don’t be in retail then.

You close early, and not open at all? DON’T complain when it’s hard going. You are the wrong people to be in business if you can’t open when it’s most needed.

Speed limit

Scratching my head a bit...as to why someone would want to overtake a car doing 98kph then text the newspaper about their frustrations.

Obviously had there been an accident the driver at fault would have been the one traveling just below the speed limit. Yeah right.

Picton drinking fountain

Great to see a new drinking fountain installed along waterfront a few weeks ago. Perhaps MDC will switch on in time for winter???

Old junk

People have been putting their old junk and rubbish in the charity clothing bins and it needs to stop.

If you want to donate something donate something good, nobody wants to buy ripped clothing. Please be considerate of the volunteers that have to clean it out.

Unripe

Why are strawberries picked unripe and put into punnets for sale? They don’t ripen after being picked.

Thank you

Massive Thank You to the guys that are putting the new bike stiles in at the Wither Hills Farm Park. They are absolutely brilliant.

True leaders

Respect to those folk who avoid awarded positions on statutory bodies.

By standing up and seeking nomination support, you are true leaders.

Water

H20, yes folks, that’s liquid! Chilled its snow and ice, boiled for beverages, cooled for rain-that’s how we get water and heated for steam! Natures wonder, not a cash grab for late mythical arivees.

It’s all 3 to 5 water, hot air politics; claimed outright, but only after the wheel and steel was also imported! Is the Sun next; no Cindyhoots, you can’t own this paper!

Midweek paper

Well well the Midweek has changed their masthead to include the te reo Māori name. We know what that means, they’ve been given another handout. How money talks.

Silence

I too am sick of the silence and misinformation. To address this and other issues there is a meeting being held at the Redwood town hall on Oliver Park January 28th at 2pm. Workingmen’s Club membership are asked to attend.

Stunned

On Friday 13th I was stunned to encounter 2 young people with a rubbish bag gathering rubbish left by careless with an IQ failure type of person at the Spy Valley ford crossing. The young man said, if we don’t do it the world will be one rubbish heap!

Congratulations to these super young people for their initiative and work ethics! There is always hope.

Eco saving travel

Wellingtonians saving fuel and cars, using the ‘fish card’ for public transport instead of cash, very PC, BUT wait there’s more, free entertainment- now getting mugged for free by gangs of thugs on the local buses.

Not a news word from the head girl on her TV media platform. Lost on holiday.

Clubs of Marlborough

C O M the time for meetings has long gone, members weren’t given the opporttinity to save OUR CLUB.

Eggs

Here we are in the middle of a cost of living crisis and eggs, surely, are going to double in price due to short supply. That’s if you’re lucky enough to find any on the shelves.

I feel sorry for the battery hens, I really do. And I understand the Governments desire to ban this practice, but don’t we have bigger problems at the moment?!

Talk of the week

Wonderful staff

Recently had a procedure done at Wairau Hospital, Day Stay Unit and the service and care was amazing. Thank you. You deserve everything you get and more.

Thank you

I would like to say a huge thank you to Tracy at Countdown Springlands for her kindness and help, it will never be forgotten.

Well done Matt Thank you

Great to read about a local lad doing so well. Congratulations to Matt Frost on being acknowledged with a QSM.

I would like to thank the people who assisted me when I fell at the front of New World last Thursday. I am very grateful. Lyn.

Managing high cholesterol

What is cholesterol and why is high cholesterol bad for you? Find out how high cholesterol can affect your heart and how to lower it.

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol (matū ngako) is a fat-like substance in your blood. It comes from two places: Some is made naturally by your liver, and some comes from the food you eat.

Cholesterol isn’t always ‘bad’.

Your body needs some cholesterol to work properly.

It uses it to develop cells and hormones, and to process and digest fats.

But, if the amount of cholesterol in the blood gets too high, it can cause a heart attack or stroke.

Types of cholesterol

Th ere are two types of cholesterol: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL cholesterol).

LDL cholesterol is sometimes called ‘bad cholesterol’.

When you have too much LDL cholesterol it builds up in the arteries (the blood vessels that carry blood and oxygen around the body).

The build-up of cholesterol causes lumps of hard fat called plaque to form on the artery walls. These can break off, block the artery, and cause heart attacks and strokes.

HDL cholesterol is the ‘good’ cholesterol. It works like a cleaner, carrying LDL cholesterol out of the arteries to your liver, where it is broken down and used by the body.

Triglycerides are another type of fat in your blood.

When we eat or drink our body turns any energy (calories) that it doesn’t need into triglycerides, which are then stored in fat cells.

Triglyceride levels normally rise after we’ve eaten, but when we consume more energy than our body needs they stay at a high level, rather than returning to normal.

This is particularly true if our diet includes lots of refined sugar.

A few changes in your diet can reduce cholesterol and improve your heart health.

This includes foods high in added sugar, like sweets, baked goods and chocolate, low fibre carbohydrates, like white bread, and alcohol and fizzy drinks, which include lots of extra sugar.

Like cholesterol, high triglycerides can increase the amount of plaque (hard fat) in the artery walls.

The only way to measure cholesterol is to get a blood test. Sometimes your doctor will call this blood test a ‘lipid profile’ or ‘lipid test’.

Lipid is another word for fat, so this test includes your cholesterol and your triglyceride levels.

When should I get my cholesterol levels checked?

If you haven’t had a cholesterol test before, talk to your doctor or nurse about when you should have one.

If you’re at higher risk of heart attack or stroke because of your or family’s health history, then you may need one at a younger age.

Change of plans for George

Blenheim's George Glover who was to commence an ocean swim of 300km from New Brighton Pier to Whites Bay on January 27 has had to come up with a safer alternative.

An unfavourable forecast for late January has resulted in George putting the swim on hold. He will now attempt a freshwater swim with a series of loops of Lake Rotoiti at St Arnaud, covering the same distance.

George says the plan will now be to begin January 28 at 5:30am with the intention of finishing Waitangi Weekend with a finish at midday on February 5. George will swim in two shifts 5:30 - 11:30am and 5:30 - 11:30pm with six hours rest in between.

George has set a goal of raising $100,000 for Mike King's I Am Hope charity.
