You know it’s a top night when an estimated 6000 people attend the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Picton. It may have been only 11 days ago, yet the countdown into 2024 has been regarded as the ‘best New Year’s event yet’ with hundreds of punters lining the Picton foreshore while some enthusiastic, hearty souls, swam out to the wooden platform to get an up close experience for the fireworks just after midnight. Continued from page 1. The event, run in conjunction with Pure Events Marlborough and the Marlborough District Council, saw a family atmosphere with all walks of the community enjoying themselves and indulging in the relaxed atmosphere of the occasion. Indeed, the community came to the fore with the Council, sponsors, contractors, bands and crew collaborating at their finest. Comments from locals ranged to ‘the best one yet’ to ‘what a fantastic night’. For 65-year-old Picton local Mary Wishart the night was not only an opportunity to reflect on the past year but showcase Picton at its finest with what she says, ‘sold itself with the view’. Glynn Thomas says the fireworks and the event did the region proud and was ‘one of the best New Year’s displays ever’. “And from little old Picton – talk about how to show up the big towns,” he says. Meanwhile, nine-year-old Lilly Jeffs from Christchurch says she especially loved the donuts and the candy floss, adding the ‘man who sang the kids songs at the start of the night’ was ‘a tad silly but funny’. The weather played its part with winds dying down shortly after 8pm (7pm start) as the wider community sat down for a comfortable spot and entertained by children’s entertainer Jeff Parsnips (Jeff Parsons) – how cool was his outfit? The Christchurch based father launched his debut single ‘Tomato

Tamati’, in October last year. The song went down a treat with Marlborough’s tamariki, a celebration of Kiwiana, which told the tale of a boy who takes the condiment to heart in everything he eats from teriyaki chicken and Weetbix. Jeff’s own children are the driving force being his musical pathway. “I’ve always sung little tunes to my kids since they were born - sometimes to make them laugh, and sometimes to help myself to get through the insanity of parenthood” Parsons laughs. “I’ve always enjoyed the work of children’s writers along the lines of Spike Milligan, and television shows like SpongeBob Squarepants and Bluey, where the humour and wit can transcend the age demographics. I want to make parents laugh, and their children sing and dance”. And laughter there was. Nothing says family than a grown, domesticated Marlborough man losing his inhibitions to get his ‘inner Wiggle’ on. Meanwhile, local band Big Spin covered the likes of 90’s favourites Matchbox Twenty, Blink-182 and Green Day resulting in those of that genre having a boogie to the diverse music trends of pop punk. The night culminated with local entertainer Tom Knowles (now based in Wellington) doing just that, showcasing his versatility, stage presence and charisma to an appreciative crowd who counted in the New Year to the 1980 anthem Bliss from Th’ Dudes.

Visesio arrival - ‘An even field’

While Marlburians travelled to various parts of the region over the New Year period for some rest and recreation, Visesio Manu Orion Andrews was probably wondering what all the fuss was about? Visesio arrived to the world and was born on January 3 at Wairau Hospital, weighing a healthy eight pounds (3.62 kilograms). Parents Faleupolu and Erina Andrews were thrilled to welcome their baby. Erina says Visesio was due between January 8 – 15 but suggested, ‘this baby had different plans’. Erina says she was admitted into hospital on January 2 as her water broke and ‘Sio’ was born 7:35pm. Mum was in labour for eight and a half hours while the delivery took no more than 20 minutes.

Marlborough’s 2024 newest baby, Visesio Manu Orion Andrews, arrived on January 3 at Wairau Hospital weighing eight pounds.

Visesio, a Samoan name, is named after his Grandafther and Matai, Visesio Maugagoa. Erina says after seven days, Visesio takes after his Dad adding he is ‘very much being raised and taught in the Faa Samoa way’. “His mannerisms are still being taught and installed,” she says.

“He loves Samoan hymns and music, calming to Visesio. He does not like to be left unattended too long, craves the presence of people.” Erina, 39, has three other kids aged: 18, 13 and 10 years. “I have two girls and now two boys – an even field,” she laughs.

Erina, is from Te Arawa: Rotorua - Ngri Whákaue te Iwi, Ngāti Tura me Ngāti Tengakau te Hapu. She says she wants to thank all the maternity staff at the Wairau Hospital for their professionalism, support and guidance throughout the entire duration of her stay and experience.

Mobile library app unavailable The Marlborough District Libraries mobile app – used by many library members to manage their account and search the catalogue – is currently unavailable. District Libraries Manager Glenn Webster said while a solution was being worked on by the app provider, staff had been told it would be out of action for the foreseeable future.

“We know that the loss of the mobile app is frustrating for the many people who use it and we apologise,” he said. “It is an amazing tool and one library members loved.” The app had many features and was generally used to manage accounts, renew items and search the catalogue. The problem is an international

one and involves the app’s ability to connect to the main catalogue server, which is broken. This means that some features may still appear to work, when in fact they are showing outdated information, Mr Webster said. The app will not search the catalogue for books or show current checkouts and holds. It may show hours and locations

3

but given there is no connection to the server, the information may be wrong. “We are really missing it but members can still log on to their account from a home computer or come in to a library for help,” Mr Webster said. “We thank people for their patience and will update members as soon as we receive more information.

Marlborough Mount Everest Challenge The Uppers and Downers, from the Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade earned the team award, for the Marlborough Mount Everest Challenge last year. The team climbed the equivalent of Mt Everest more than 10 times and collectively, they achieved 364 climbs and 89,592m. Competitors had seven weeks to climb the elevation of Mount Everest (8800 metres); the same amount of time it took Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. For an idea of scale, Picton’s Tirohanga Track and Blenheim’s Mt Vernon would need to be climbed 36 and 25 times respectively to reach the height of Mt Everest.

Number of gambling machines in Marlborough set to decrease By Maia Hart, Local Democracy Reporter

The number of gambling machines in Marlborough is set to decrease. It comes after the Marlborough District Council adopted a “sinking lid” approach to its gambling venues and machines. It means no new gambling venues or machines are allowed to open, should one close. However, two venues under the same deprivation level will be able to merge into the sum of machines previously operated by each club, or 18 machines – whichever is less. The Marlborough District Council earlier this year set out to review its Gambling Venue Policy, with the council’s licencing inspector Georgia Murrin recommending it adopted a sinking lid policy. One of the objectives of the policy is to minimise harm to the community caused by gambling. Figures from May this year showed Marlborough had 12 venues and 165 gaming machines in operation. Since March 2015, there had been a 40% reduction in the number of venues, and a 33.7% reduction in the number of machines. A panel made up of chairperson

councillor Barbara Faulls, councillor Ben Minehan and councillor Thelma Sowman met in September to hear from five submitters on the proposed policy. They also considered a further submission after the council received an anonymous email from a woman who said she had the “odd flutter” on the pokies and would be sad to see the number of machines reduced. She said since the closure of the Clubs of Marlborough, it was hard to find an empty machine in the region. Sometimes, when she visited a tavern in the middle of the day all the machines were being used. She was concerned there were people in the community who would spend four or more hours on a machine in the hope they would strike big, and suggested that publicans should put a time limit on gamblers to stop them becoming a problem and allow others to “have a turn”. She also said you should be able to get extra change from the pub in order to play, rather than going to an ATM. She said that life would be dull without the pokie machines, “as one needs a break from time to time, as long as they control their own money”.

She complained that her money did not seem to last as long, and it used to be easier to win free spins. “The new machines are certainly not the same,” the email said. Meanwhile, organisations like the Gaming Machine Association, the Lion Foundation and the Pub Charity Limited did not support the sinking lid policy. “Corporate societies” – sometimes known as “pokie trusts” – were licenced by the Department of Internal Affairs to operate gambling machines in clubs or commercial venues. Corporate societies owned the machines, and entered into agreements with the venue who “host” the machines. The venue received a commission for this – which at most was 16% – based on weekly turnover. A portion of the money was then distributed to community groups by the corporate societies through grants, though not all of it was distributed, as there was only a minimum requirement of 40% that had to be granted. The Lion Foundation said the current policy, which was a cap on gaming machines at 240, was working well and balanced the potential harm from gambling whilst preserving access to community funding. The foundation supported capping the number of gaming machines to

165, an option Murrin had put forward, but said was not the preferred. At a full council meeting on December 14, councillor Faulls said there were a lot of other councils in New Zealand moving towards a sinking lid policy. “We did have quite a good discussion going backwards and forwards around community good, social good, that comes into our community from either Pub Charity or the Lions Foundation and the pokies as a whole,” Faulls said. “But we looked also at the agencies who were propping up individuals

and families who were affected by gambling harm, and we weighed up the good in terms of grants that come out to the community. “Often ... the money is coming out of the areas of higher deprivation within our community and it’s going back to areas where, in general, the community is made up of people who are socially and financially more able to support themselves, or their groups or their sporting teams. “So in recognising that, we believe the recommendation that we’ve made, in that there is a sinking lid ... is the right way to go forward.”

The Spirit of the Spirit By Chris Valli

The spirit of the Spirit of Adventure is alive and well after the boat docked in Picton on Sunday as part of their 50th Anniversary celebrations. The visit at the Picton Marina was open to the public from 2pm – 6pm. The Marlborough public were invited to come and take a look onboard, meet the crew and see what the voyages were all about while the ship was in port. The Trust was set up in 1972 by founder Lou Fisher who had a vision to empower the youth of New Zealand with. The concept of a tall ship for young people combined his ultimate passions – his love for sailing and the ocean with his desire to better the

lives of others. The idea for the two-masted topsail schooner Spirit of Adventure followed the purchase of Lou’s first big yacht - the vintage 1899 gaff rigged Brixham Trawler, Imatra. Interested local Philippa Hyndman says she saw the vessel anchored in Endevaour Inlet last Wednesday when she went on a sounds cruise with her aunty and cousin. She says she learnt that it cost $2500 for a week voyage for 16-19 year olds but financial assistance was available thanks to scholarships. “The bunk beds were interesting,” says Philippa. “I didn’t know they would be hammocks. I thought wooden bunks with mattresses.” The Spirit of Adventure Trust has

gained and maintained a reputation as a highly respected youth development organisation providing a unique environment for youth development, where the focus of learning is on team-work, developing skills of communication, self-leadership, self-reliance, self-discipline, self-esteem, resilience, confidence and leadership. Learning to sail a tall ship is only a small part of the programmes offered. Today, Spirit of New Zealand is believed to be the world's busiest youth ship, sailing around ten months of the year. Subject to stringent, on-going maintenance surveys, refits and audits, Spirit of New Zealand is expected to be able to continue operating youth voyages until around 2035.

Kindness - humanity? Dear Ed, The policy of “kindness” which got Prime Minister Ardern so much abuse in dealing with Covid-19 may not have been appropriate for humanity as it exists. Our dog-eat-dog world is best exemplified by the tactics of Sweden, which merely offered vaccination to all who would take it, with none of the restrictions on travel and contacts which were applied to our people. Sweden’s initial policy led to a death toll, per million population, of 2000 whereas ours was under 400. The upside for Sweden is that those who died were the weaker, I suppose mainly non-producing, members of society, for a prime example those of my generation

www.sowmans.co.nz

03 578 4719

of course. Ask yourself, did that weaken or strengthen Sweden going forward. It is a fact that there were more deaths in that country than in any year since the plague broke out in the 1840s. Of course, if we had stayed open as a destination for the world’s travellers, such a policy would have absolutely decimated our people, we being such slackers where vaccination and immunisation are concerned, quite apart from the noisy anti-vaxxers influence. Jacinda’s denigrators would naturally never consider such facts. Yours faithfully B.Holvey

Infrastructure Dear Ed, The new government is taking a close look at expenditure approved by the previous administration as prices escalate. Money borrowed has at some time has to be paid back and interest paid by the taxpayer. To be factored into this must be population growth or fall. In NZ, the birth rate is now well below replacement level, so without immigrants, many grand schemes could become white elephants. And believe it or not, we are a poor country living like a rich one. I did read of one country forecasting that at one point in the future, they will only have one worker for each pensioner. Some countries, including China, could see their populations halve by the turn of the century and they are worried. Regarding the ferries, it is interesting to note that a Norwegian ferry company will not carry electric cars, despite Norway having the highest uptake of such cars. Would that happen here? Incidentally, depending on two given baselines, if we had bred like the Palestinians since 1948, our population without immigration, would now be either 11 or14 million. Their median age is 18. If this was the case in NZ, half of the population would at school John Vile Blenheim

NYE spectacular, but what about Blenheim? Dear Ed, Now that the holiday season is coming to an end MDC need to look at ways to encourage the public to support Blenheim over

this period. Picton NYE was spectacular with the excellent local home grown talent. The crowd was one of the largest in recent times. But

what about Blenheim? Sure there is the biannual NYE, but is that enough? Why not have a smaller one in Blenheim targeting young

families and the elderly. At 8pm or 9pm. Food for thought. Or have I missed something? Getting old

Engineer recognised with NZDSD Louis Munden-Hooper, a marine engineer, grew up in Marlborough and as Chris Valli discovers the shipping world has opened up a world of opportunities. Lieutenant Commander Louis Munden-Hooper, who oversaw the construction, trials and first operations of the largest vessel to enter the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) – HMNZS Aotearoa has been awarded the New Zealand Distinguished Service Decoration (DSD) for his efforts. The marine engineer, who grew up in Marlborough and Nelson, was a pivotal figure in the development, delivery and integration of the polar-class sustainment vessel, starting with its construction in South Korea. Louis showed great leadership and dedication throughout the project and was vital to the successes of the ship in its first years of service, according to his citation. HMNZS Aotearoa was specially built for the RNZN, and at 173 metres long and displacing 26,000 tonnes, is the Navy’s largest ever ship. HMNZS Aotearoa was com-

missioned in 2020 and has since deployed twice to the Indo-Pacific region, including the humanitarian relief mission to Tonga in January 2022 following a volcanic eruption and tsunami.

“I was very keen to be part of the project” The ship then completed her first resupply voyage to Antarctica and took part in the United States-led exercise RIMPAC 2022. It has delivered strategic success for the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), New Zealand Government and the people of New Zealand. Lieutenant Commander Munden-Hooper joined the New Zealand-based project team in

August 2018 as a logistics manager, then posted to South Korea as the commissioning engineering officer. He was involved throughout the construction, trials, acceptance and capability integration of the ship, as well as dealing with the effects of the Covid pandemic on the programme. Lieutenant Commander Munden-Hooper, who has since posted off HMNZS Aotearoa, was key to the success of HMNZS Aotearoa’s first 18 months of service. He says he was extremely surprised to receive the DSD award, and never thought he would be the commissioning engineering officer when he was initially trying to get on the project team. “I was very keen to be part of the project,” he says. “I went to Korea in 2018 to scope out elements of my role and was there full-time from April 2019 until we brought the ship to New Zealand.

“It was definitely interesting times with Covid-19. When we brought the ship over in June 2020 we had to do 14 days’ quarantine at sea, and when we arrived we had to sit and wait outside the harbour for the time to count down.” He says his time in South Korea was extremely rewarding. “It was a huge project and even on a slow day in the shipyard there could be hundreds of people working on the ship. Work was going at an extreme pace and you had to work hard to keep track and make sure everything was happening as we expected.” Once the ship was in New Zealand, there was the work towards achieving interim operational release of its capabilities. “We had the Tonga mission and it was really rewarding to see the team pivot to change their focus and deliver for that. Then Antarctica, RIMPAC and a maintenance

period in Singapore. I posted off Aotearoa in September 2022.” Louis grew up in Blenheim, attended high school in Nelson and moved to Auckland to study for his engineering degree. He joined the RNZN in 2009 under a scholarship scheme. He cut his teeth on large ships, including logistics ship HMNZS Canterbury, tanker HMNZS Endeavour and a stint with the Royal Navy’s now-decommissioned aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious. Large ships, especially older ones, needed a work-hard ethic to keep them going, he says. “If I’m honest, there were days in Korea when I thought, ‘how long is it going to be until I get to the bottom of this pile of work?’ But it was a great time being in Korea, building a ship and being part of the team to serve as the commissioning crew. It was hard work, but an exceptional experience.”

Sunflower superstars By Chris Valli

Winner of the Widest Head went to Witherlea Kindergarten, Harriet Hellstrom, 4yrs.

A children’s sunflower-growing contest has brought smiles to thousands of young faces and imparted useful lifelong skills on how to grow and nurture plants. In Marlborough, 309 children from Marlborough Kindergarten Association were involved in the Daltons Nationwide Sunflowers project. The fun project engaged budding gardeners in friendly competition, where each Kindergarten strived to grow the tallest sunflower and the sunflower with the widest

head in their region. The event was particularly significant, achieving the highest level of participation since the project’s inception. The winner of the Tallest Sunflower in the Marlborough Kindergarten Association’s region was Mayfield Kindergarten, with their sunflower plant measuring in at 150 cm. Teacher, Natasha Rangitihi, says growing their beautiful Daltons Sunflowers from seed has once again been such an awesome introduction for their wonderful tamariki to taking on the role of kaitiaki of their natural environment. “We experienced some challenging weather but all the hard work was worth it. Thank you, Daltons, for providing this wonderful, engaging, and enjoyable experience,” says Natasha. The winner of the Widest Sunflower Head

was won by Witherlea Kindergarten with a diameter of 11.5 cm. Witherlea Kindergarten have taken out the prize for the widest sunflower head two years in a row and also won tallest sunflower in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019. Teacher, Cynthia Rangi, says the competition has been part of the Witherlea Kindergarten kaupapa since its infancy and their Kindergarten has won a prize every time. “It makes us super proud to win the widest sunflower head this year. The children are involved in the whole process, from planting the seeds, repotting the seedlings, and then taking them home to plant in their garden. Daltons General Manager, Colin Parker, says congratulations to the 2023 winners, who he says, have done such an amazing job. “We are very thankful for the support of our project partners and the 11 kindergarten associations that participated.

The Witherlea Best Little Gardener Winner Tallest Sunflower: Mayfield Kindergarten, Tommie 4yrs, Ollie 4yrs and Sadie 4yrs. went to 4-year-old Harry Falconer.

Marlborough anglers warned about rogue site By Chris Valli

Fish & Game New Zealand is urging Marlborough anglers to beware of an overseas-based website offering its services to help purchase a fishing licence. The Fish Assistant website, which is not authorised by Fish & Game NZ, offers anglers fishing licences at a significantly higher cost to the user than purchasing a licence through the Fish & Game website. Anglers have reported being significantly over-charged or not receiving the licence they have paid for, which poses a real risk for anglers when they get approached by our

compliance team in the field as they may be fishing illegally. Fish Assistant has also altered fishing licences, (an offence under the Freshwater Fishing Regulations) to remove the purchase price in an effort to prevent anglers from knowing the actual costs of purchasing them from Fish & Game. Fish & Game believes approximately 150 fishing licences have been purchased nationwide through the Fish Assistant website. “There is only one authorised place to purchase your fishing licence online, and that’s the Fish & Game NZ website,” says Corina Jordan, chief executive of Fish & Game.

“We’re concerned those people looking to buy a licence will pay a premium through the Fish Assistant website when they can easily buy one online for a reasonable price through Fish & Game. People can also purchase a licence in-store at one of our partner retail outlets. “We’re disappointed this website is pulling the wool over people’s eyes by suggesting it is difficult to purchase a fishing licence in New Zealand when it is, in fact, very simple and quick. Fish & Game also has teams around the country who are happy to provide free advice and information.” We are also very concerned that Angler’s

credit card details have been compromised, as the website is not processing these payments through an accredited payment system. Fish & Game has been liaising with the Department of Conservation, which is also affected by this website and recommends anyone who has used the fish assistant website to contact the NZ Police and their bank. Exclusive Interview!

Natalie Andrew

Hospitality Teacher at Richmond View School  Are you a dog or cat person? Depends on the individual dog or cat, usually dog.  My friends would say I am… “A curious, talkative, creative, loveable bod with a love for all things that breathe, a giving nature and a desire for all to be well, always.” I had to ask… Apparently I’m a chatty, cuddly idealist.  The best advice I ever received was? Do something every day that scares you.  What would you buy if money was no object? Probably take my Mum on a massive holiday to explore and experience all the places she would like to.  Local coffee haunt? Tabletop Cafe is my favourite to take my kids to.  Favourite takeaway? Village India.  The shop you can’t walk past is...? Cerise.  What’s the most thoughtful gift you’ve ever received? Gosh, hard to say. Maybe a water bottle full of M&Ms with the note: “Thanks for adding colour to my life, thought I’d return the favour.”

Getting ready for races Marlborough Harness Club member Jamie Arbuckle and President Shirley Morrison were some of the club members and volunteers involved in getting Waterlea Racecourse ready last Saturday for next weeks Harness Race meeting. With good horse numbers and fine weather a larger crowd is expected on both the Friday 19 and Sunday 21.

New vessel for Beachcomber Cruises By Chris Valli

Picton based Beachcomber Cruises has recently acquired a 17m high speed vessel, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion strategy and commitment to staying at the forefront of maritime tourism. The strategic investment underscores Beachcomber Cruises dedication to enhancing its fleet capabilities and offering clients superior services. The vessel will be available for private hire and for group charters. General Manager Jessica Jones

says the new vessel is a testament to the family owned and operated business since 2006 and unwavering commitment to excellence in the maritime tourism industry. “This vessel not only expands our fleet capabilities but also reflects our dedication to providing clients with top-tier services that meet the evolving needs of the global market. We are proud to continue setting new standards in maritime excellence,” says Jessica. “With a focus on excellence and client satisfaction, we remain dedicated to shaping the future of maritime transportation.”

Beachcomber Cruises was purchased in 2006 by Margaret and Tony Crapper, at the time of purchase Beachcomber Cruises had two vessels, over the years buying small water taxis service now known as Picton Water taxis a private on demand service. Throughout Covid Beachcomber Cruises Mail Boat was a lifeline for the residents who call the Queen Charlotte Sounds waterways home, delivering groceries and essential items to those in need, shining a light on just how special and required their Picton Mail Boat cruise is.

 Where is your happy holiday place? You know, weirdly, some of my best days have been right here in Marlborough - in the Sounds, by the river, at the beach… generally somewhere near water.  Favourite programme or series currently watching? Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Dessert Masters, or some nature documentary.  What’s one thing on your bucket list? To do another show.

Beachcomber Cruises General Manager Jessica Jones says the new vessel is a testament to the family owned business and unwavering commitment to excellence in the maritime tourism industry.

Too many?

Colleges

Congrats to all receivers on the honours list this year. However there are so many QSMs etc given out each year now it doesn’t seem as special as it once was.

Easy solve for combined colleges. Leave Bohally where it is make colleges for 1-7. Save money.

Best of luck

Horse and cart

Congrats to Mr Thornley for winning the Clubs of Marlborough property. My Dad would be proud of you for mentioning that there maybe something in it for the RSA? Best of luck with your investment. Will watch this space.

Two new roundabouts on SH 6, I think it would be preferable to revert to the horse and cart era, and require each and every motorised vehicle to be preceded by a man/woman on foot waiving a red flag. Or just carry on with Darwinian selection and let nature take its course and deal to the reckless and stupid.

Hilarious sign Entering Blenheim we see a sign ‘CHERRIES-spray free’, on left, oh goody! Then bit of head scratching. Netted cherries abutting a vineyard being sprayed in chemicals that very moment. What new innovative magical bird netting that is to keep out pesticides too. Drive on mother, to Westwood next left. Excellent try but karate no thanks.

Lovely In response to an email I sent to the Prime Minister, a reply from his office arrived. It started with “Good morning” and ended with “Kind regards”. What a lovely Christmas present.

Weeds

Freedom campers

Security

Another reason to complain. While getting petrol today at NPD Springcreek, I witnessed a Male driver of a sliding door campervan walk over and urinate in the shrubs. If he lifted his head the public toilet sign was 20mtrs away. Disgusting! He just got in his van with his partner and drove away. Bring on the law change, only freedom campers with flushable toilets on the road.

Star of David Who painted the 2 star of David on top of theater river side and why and how did they get up there.

When the MDC staff return from holidays, they may tidy up the weed in the Taylor River walk way. Obviously there won’t be a raft race for the kids this year??

What on earth is wrong with this country when it is NECESSARY to employ security staff to protect our health professionals, people who devote their lives to help the vulnerable, the ill, the injured and the infirmed. We as a community - but more particularly those shameful, out of control perpetrators - should be hugely embarrassed and concerned, and the full force of the law should be applied, as well as ‘name and shame’. But, of course, we’re too PC to allow either to occur, and THAT is the real shame!

Backwards “Let’s take our Country back”...wards

Weekly? I have been thinking about the introduction of wheely bins by the council, in June next. I consider that general household waste should be collected weekly, not two weekly, as proposed. Particularly in the summer, in the interests of health and sanitation.

Egg on face Mr Dew talking rubbish about Port Marlborough in newspaper only to get a public dressing down from MDC CEO the following day for misleading folk.

Breaking monotony

Stolen Xmas gifts!! Unbelievable that 2 days after Xmas someone picked up my granddaughters new Crocs at Whites Bay which she had personally decorated with charms. Obviously they didn’t want her Dad’s Jandals which were beside them !! If this child or parent has a conscience maybe they could leave at Sun office.

A work colleagues new years resolution was to sit on another stool at his local, which basically meant instead of sitting next to his fellow drinker all year, he’ll be sitting opposite them. He informs me he’s already seeing another side to them. What will next year bring? Sitting at another table completely? Conversing with other customers? I doubt it, he might start a resolution.

Appreciated Seasons greetings to all the people who deal with our rubbish and recycling. I watch the men on the trucks and think what a hard physical job it must be, especially in the heat. You’re all doing a great job thank you, we appreciate it

Top marks Great night Tom Knowles what a star. I have no doubt his appearance at the Picton fireworks New Year’s Eve drew the best crowd ever. Well done and to all concerned with the organizing.

Royalty Prince Andrew in the spotlight again. Will we ever really know the truth of his guilt or innocence and do we really care?

Racing this time Our race meetings at Waterlea are only a couple of weekends away. Always worth heading along whether you like a bet or not. Good to patronize a local event.

Thank you Would like to say a huge thank you to the lady, whom I did not know, who helped pack my groceries and put in my car at Pak&Save Oct/Nov 2023. I have mobility issues so very grateful for your kindness.

Stadium 2000 Holiday hours are advertised on your website. Closed statutory days. Other days opens 6am. However on travelling into town from country home, myself along with others expecting 6am opening, your temporary notice on your door says opens 8.30am. Your poor organization costs patrons time, money & disappointment, especially when requiring the pool for rehab. Not good enough on your part. Your website needs your attention. Please note this is to use the pool.

Massive congratulations to Katrina Lange and Pure Events for putting on a magic NYE function and fireworks on a beautiful balmy evening in Picton. Top marks for a brilliant evening for the thousands that enjoyed themselves!

No pride Good afternoon. I was walking from ferry bridge to Bothams bend and counted 17 Cans on the side of the road. Haven’t we got any pride in our beautiful country. Gateway to Marlborough What a joke! Mayor Nadine have you been to the railway station and bus exchange lately? What a disgusting first impression. Bus shelter glass had not been cleaned in ages. It wasn’t raining but spouting dripping on seats below. I know birds poop but. the build up on station platform seats was disgusting. Seats and rails absolutely covered in poop. A clean every couple of weeks would go a long way First impressions count

Federated Farmers welcome repeal of NBEA and SPA Acts Federated Farmers are welcoming repeal of the Natural and Built Environment Act and Spatial Planning Act. “This was one of Federated Farmers’ 12 key policy priorities

for restoring farmer confidence, so we’re really pleased to see the new Government have made it a priority,” Feds RMA reform spokesperson Mark Hooper says. “Fa r mer s have been crying out for reform of our cumbersome resource management laws for decades, but those reforms needed to be done right. “Unfortunately, La-

Mark Hooper.

bour’s reform programme completely missed the mark. “Instead of offering more certainty and making life easier for New Zealanders, they were going to deliver

the exact opposite - complexity, cost, and uncertainty.” Hooper says Labour’s model of unelected regional planning committees would have moved decision-making further away from local communities and reduced democratic accountability in our planning system. Federated Farmers also had serious c o n c e r n s a b out

vague new concepts that were being introduced that would have led to years of needless and expensive litigation through the courts. “The repeal is a positive step forward, but its very much a case of the job only being half done. “The new Government now need to get to work drafting a replacement that will reduce cost and

complexity in the planning system, and empower local democracy. “Federated Farmers are urging the new Government to start work on replacement legislation early in the New Year. “It’s important reform is progressed at pac e so new legislation can be introduced this parliamentary term,” Hooper concluded.

Government ends ‘Ute tax’ If you can think it, we can help you make it. Talk to an ITM sales rep today and let’s get it underway.

The Coa lition Government has ended the ‘Ute Tax’ and Clean Car Discount for all vehicles registered after 31 December 2023, marking a New Year’s victory for taxpayers, farmers, and tradies. “Scrapping the ‘Ute Tax’ as part of the National-ACT coalition agreement was

a priority in our 100-day plan, and we have delivered on that commitment. The days of unfairly taxing our farmers and tradies are now behind us,” Transport Minister Simeon Brown says. “The previous government’s scheme was inequitable and fiscally irrespon-

sible, offering subsidies to individuals buying electric vehicles, while imposing taxes on hardworking farmers and tradies who have little choice about the type of vehicle they need for work. “Our Coalition Government is committed to increasing the uptake of electric vehicle owner-

ship by supercharging EV charging infrastructure, which is one of the most significant barriers for people taking up an EV. The ‘Ute Tax’ and applications for the Clean Car Discount have ended for all vehicles registered from 11:59 pm on 31 December 2023.

Marlburians heading into Nelson Lakes National Park this summer are being asked to clean their gear at new cleaning stations to prevent invasive algae being spread to the park’s pristine alpine lakes and rivers. The microscopic algae lindavia and didymo, which can produce snot-like blooms, are in the national park’s Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa, and in Lake Tennyson on the park’s eastern edge. The algae are also in some Tasman and Marlborough rivers. The Department of Conservation is calling on people to Check, Clean, Dry gear that has come into contact with freshwater before using it in other lakes and waterways to avoid spreading the algae and other aquatic pests in Nelson Lakes and in other areas. People making trips into Nelson Lakes National Park are asked to clean gear that is wet or damp from any river or lake water at the cleaning stations near the main access points at Coldwater, Lakehead and Sabine huts. “Gear needs to be soaked for just 10 minutes in the 10% detergent solution at the cleaning stations to kill the microscopic

algae,” says Melissa Griffin, DOC Nelson Lakes Senior Biodiversity Ranger. “If gear has been dry for at least 48 hours and is bone dry, it is safe to use, but not if dry for less time. For example, if people have swum in Lakes Rotoiti or Rotoroa one day and they plan to swim elsewhere the next day, their togs should be treated with the detergent solution even if dry.” Lindavia can cause a sticky mucus-like substance known as ‘lake snow’ that hangs below the water surface. Didymo, also known as ‘rock snot’, can form large, unsightly mats on the bottom of lakes, rivers, and streams. For the third summer, there will be hut wardens at Blue Lake Hut to speak with trampers about preventing the spread of the algae and other aquatic pests in Nelson Lakes. The hut wardens will also talk about respecting the sacredness of Rotomairewhenua/Blue Lake, and Rotopōhueroa/ Lake Constance which are tapu/sacred to mana whenua iwi, particularly to Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō. People are asked not to touch the water in these lakes or to swim in them to uphold their mauri/life force

and pureness. Kylie Batt, who is of Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, is back as Blue Lake hut warden from late December to March, having been in the role two summers ago. Volunteers will fill in when Kylie is taking a break. “People shouldn’t wash or put anything in the lakes, including not filling drink bottles. This will also help protect the outstanding water clarity of Rotomairewhenua, which is the clearest freshwater reported in the world,” says Melissa Griffin. “As lindavia and didymo are microscopic they are hard to detect unless multiplied in a bloom. When they’re not blooming, people won’t know if it’s on their clothing or gear which is why it’s so important to check, clean and dry all items that have been in freshwater before using them in another waterway or waterbody.” Lindavia was brought into New Zealand accidentally and is in a few lakes in Otago, Canterbury and Waikato. In the upper South Island, it was identified in the Buller River in 2019 and then in Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa. It is also in Lake Tennyson in Molesworth Recreation Reserve and Nelson’s Maitai reservoir.

Mako Man to take on Ireland role By Chris Valli

Irish Eyes were smiling during the festive season for Andrew Goodman with the former Tasman rugby player and coach, appointed Ireland rugby’s backs coach. Goodman has signed on for three years until the end of the 2027 Rugby World Cup and will take up the position when former England fullback Mike Catt retires from the role after Ireland tours South Africa in July. Goodman has been working as a back coach for Leinster, a side he also played 17 games for between 2012-14. He also worked with Samoa at the Rugby World Cup

last year. Goodman says it had been a difficult decision to make because he had loved coming back to Leinster, a team that he loved playing with, and a team he loved coaching. “The opportunity to test yourself at the very highest level is something I have loved doing with Samoa in the last few years and now this challenge has come up with Ireland, and it’s one I am excited about,” he says. “It’s a chance to work with one of the best teams in the world and with some of the best coaches and players in the world, and it was one I couldn’t turn down. “I look forward to getting stuck into that when the time is right and

building on the great work that Andy Farrell and the other coaches have done to now. But, until then, I want to continue doing my best for this club [Leinster] and this group of players and the supporters we have.” Ireland Rugby’s performance director, David Nucifora, says Goodman brings a wealth of experience of the Irish and international systems and has packed a significant amount into a relatively young coaching career. “His familiarity with the system here, coupled with his knowledge of the global game, will add to our environment,” Nucifora says. Goodman was educated at Nelson College from 1996 to 2000. In 2014

More than just cherries The Caythorpe family has a close association with Hospice Marlborough. On December 28, they dropped in cherries for patients, staff and their families to enjoy, and also handed over more than $1,400 that they raised from a “Friends of Caythorpe” charity cherry pick. he returned to Nelson after two seasons at Leinster, and accepted a position as head of the rugby academy at Nelson College for 2015.

He spent time as head coach of Tasman in the NPC and assistant coach of the Crusaders in Super Rugby.

Water restrictions for Picton and Waikawa Council is asking Picton and Waikawa residents to limit their sprinkler use to alternate days until further notice. Hot weather, high demand and a reduced water level in the Essons Valley dam is pushing the supply to its limit. Operations and Maintenance Engineer Stephen Rooney says all households on the Picton and Waikawa supply need to adhere to the restrictions immediately. Handheld hoses can still be used but this should be limited. “Water recently stopped flowing over the Essons Valley dam due to low rainfall in recent weeks. When this happens, algal growth quickly increases as water temperatures rise. This makes the water very difficult to treat to be compliant with the NZ Drinking Water Standards and reduces the volume of water available by up to 30 per cent,” Stephen says. “We are asking residents and businesses to think carefully about water use and cooperate with the restrictions, otherwise properties in elevated areas will run out of water when storage empties. We realise this is the time of the year when people irrigate lawns and gardens but we hope people will do this in a responsible manner, observing the limits Council has put in place,” he says. The restrictions are: • A property with an even numbered street address may use sprinklers only on even numbered calendar days. • A property with an odd numbered street address may use sprinklers only on odd

numbered calendar days. • Only one tap may be used at a time to run a sprinkler or sprinkler systems. • The term sprinkler means any hose which is not held and directed by hand. “If these measures do not reduce demand enough, it will be necessary to escalate to Level 2 restrictions which would place a ban on all sprinkler use, allowing only watering by handheld hoses,” Stephen says. Council is also asking people to adopt water conservation habits such as not leaving automatic irrigation systems running for long period and to consider installing flow limiters to taps to reduce water volume. If residents have a timer on their irrigation system, irrigate at night between 10pm and 5am. The restrictions apply to all properties on the Picton and Waikawa supply. Council will limit its own water use whilst minimising any disruption to its community facilities, including reduced watering at Endeavour Park. Water levels at Picton’s other supply at Speeds Road are healthy and the treatment plant is operating at full capacity. All other water supplies in Marlborough - Blenheim, Havelock, Seddon, rural Awatere, Wairau Valley and Riverlands - are currently unaffected by the dry weather.
