Anzac winner

By Chris Tobin A war poem written by Blenheim’s Chrissy John, 11, gave her teacher goosebumps after she read it and the poem impressed judges at the Auckland War Museum also. Chrissy, a pupil at Bohally Intermediate entered her poem The Lost Boys in the museum’s Lest We Forget Competiton and won her age group for 11 years and under. There were two other age categories. Chrissie only found out about the competition on the Friday before entries closed on the following Wednesday. She sat down on Monday at school and started writing and continued again at home that evening with encouragement from her “support team,” mum Donna and her nana. Continued page 2

Anzac winner Continued from page 1 “I took it (the poem) to school on Tuesday and I showed my teacher, Miss Goodsir. She was flabbergasted; she thought it was cool. “She sent me to one of the deputy principals who wrote that it was ‘stunning the way you’ve constructed each verse and use emotive language’.” The poem tells of a soldier fighting at Gallipoli. When the news arrived that Chrissy had won, she said she was delighted. “I was jumping up and down and running round everywhere.” Mum Donna was pleased for her. “She’g got potential and I’m proud of her.”

Melanie Cooper of the Auckland War Memorial Museum said the nationwide competition had been run for eight years and this year 100 entries had been received over the three age categories. This year’s theme was on the war in the Pacific but entrants could write on any aspect of war. “Chrissy has done really well,” she said. The winners have the opportunity to read their poems following the civic service at the museum tomorrow. Chrissy will not be travelling to Auckland for this but she intended to make the trip to the city at some stage to claim her prize – a free family pass to Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium.

The Lost Boys I look up at the sun, I know that someday soon it could be my last one. I’m cold inside, but I have to fight, For it is my country therefore my right. A new day begins, the sun in my eyes, I loaded my rifle in terror, walking out, I hear crys. Death is near, I sense fear. Samuels and I are nearly there. “The Turks are coming! The Turks are coming!”, Sergeant Bailey shouts, Our regiment is running now.

Duck weather: The flooded Taylor River near the central city on Sunday afternoon.

Wet spell of weather to end By Kat Duggan Blenheim residents can expect the weather to clear up from today, after close to a week of wet weather. The wettest days of the week were both weekend days, with 32mm of rain falling on Saturday, and 28.8mm falling on Sunday, reaching a total of 60.8mm, according to MetService media & communications meteorologist, Daniel Corbett. Mr Corbett said on Monday that the moist northerly would be easing back on Monday night, changing to a westerly, bringing cooler temperatures, and less humidity for the region, with the weather looking to become fine by today.

Samuels falls on my hands, I shed a tear, From now on, it is real we are here! Blood on my hands, fear in my heart, Now it’s my turn to take part. Clouds of dust and smoke fill the air, I hate this it’s so unfair.

Despite the large amounts of rain, Blenheim escaped the downpour with no major problems, according to Marlborough District Council operations and maintenance engineer, Stephen Rooney. “The rain has been a good drought-breaker, there were some good heavy downfalls but nothing that affected our storm water drainage,” he said. Mr Rooney said the high river levels were to be expected with so much rain, and had not caused much of a flooding concern. According to the MetService, fine weather is expected to stay in the region for at least the next week, with temperatures expected to remain near the 20 degree mark.

I stare at the moon in the noisy night sky, And I worry about other regiments and their plight. Over and over I think about Samuels and the others, What will they tell their mothers? By Chrissy Johns, aged 11.

Marlborough has a new community children’s worker, who is 100% dedicated to, and passionate about her job. Coming from the United States, Robin Humphreys (pictured) is committed to working with the children and families of Blenheim, and providing them with any support they need. Robin works for the Wairau Youth and Family Trust, and works closely with St Ninians Church and Redwoodtown School. A qualified elementary school teacher, which is equivalent to primary

school here, Robin is well suited to working with the children at school. “I work with the kids, trying to create a positive learning environment, and be an ear for the kids who may need it,” she said. Having only been in New Zealand for three months, Robin said she is getting used to it, with the help of the welcoming community, and appreciating the outdoor nature of Marlborough. “I feel like I was called to be here, and if you feel that way you are just into it…also moving into a community

of faith means there already people looking out for you.” Robin’s days are spent juggling working with the school, planning a school holiday programme, and taking Sunday school classes on Sundays. “My faith is a huge part of who I am, and I hope to be that for the young people here…I want to at least be in this position for a few years, I want to continue to build relationships with the kids and families, to see where the needs are, and also to respond to the needs I have already seen,” she said.

Gallipoli veteran’s good luck charm

By Chris Tobin Like many old soldiers, Ian Daubney's grandfather didn't talk of his wartime experiences serving at Gallipoli in 1915. And so the discovery of a letter and its publication in a newspaper was important to Mr Daubney, The Warehouse manager in Blenheim, since he learned something about Fred Daubney, his grandfather that he didn't know. Learning, for example, that his grandfather had a special good luck charm. “When he was training in Egypt he bought a small hand carved elephant that he kept in his pocket and would rub for luck,” Mr Daubney said. Luck was with Fred when a shell fell near him and threw him into a trench. He suffered wounds from the explosion but was not seriously wounded. Fred wrote the letter at St Andrew's Hospital in Malta in July 1915 while recovering from his wounds. The letter was addressed to his brother and told of his tunnelling and sapping only three or four

metres from the Turkish enemy who they could hear talking. “We heard a gramophone playing but a couple of hand grenades soon stopped that,” Fred Daubney wrote. “The bombs and hand grenades play havoc among our men and you have got to keep your eyes skinned all the time. When we see them fall into our trenches we generally throw a top coat over them. It's marvellous the lives that have been saved by thus acting.” After recovering from his wounds Fred Daubney returned to Southland where he worked on the railways, refereed rugby and managed Southland rugby teams. “He was manager of the team at one stage when they brought the Ranfurly Shield back from Otago.” Fred Daubney died i n I nve r c a rg i l l i n 19 6 8. “We're just proud of what he did,” Mr Daubney said. “He was a guy who never talked about it; we never got any stories.” That's why finding the letter which was unearthed by family relation Angie Dalton has been

On Sunday night 16-year-old Kaikoura girl, Te Aomihia Te Huia, touched the audience with ‘It Only Happens,’ by Renee Geyer, a song which she dedicated to her mother, who died of breast cancer last year. All three judges praised Te Aomihia, with judge, and Australian Idol 2009 winner, Stan Walker, even joining her on stage to sing the song. On Monday night, former Queen Charlotte College student, Renee Maurice, surprised everyone with her performance of Celine Dion’s ‘It's All Coming Back To Me Now.’ The 21-year-old, who now lives in Upper Hutt, will be joining Te Aomihia at competition phase two, boot camp.

Air Force cadets ready to serve By Kat Duggan A total of 72 Air Force recruits graduated at Base Woodbourne last Friday, after completing the latest Air Force recruit course. The 13 week course is designed to prepare recruits for service in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), training them in discipline, teamwork, general service knowledge and military skills. A f t e r l iv i n g a t B a s e Woodbourne for the duration of the course, in 16 person dormitories, developing teamwork, tolerance, discipline and respect for others, the cadets, including two Blenheim-born, are now

ready to undergo trade training. Eighteen-year-old Bryce Foster is about to start training as an aircraft mechanic. “With leaving high school, it [joining the Air Force] seemed like a good fit, being able to pursue mechanical engineering as a career, as well as my sport,” he said. The ex-Marlborough Boys’ College student said the last 13 weeks had gone extremely quickly, and he was keen to start trade training. “I start on Monday, I’m really keen to start it, [the last 13 weeks] went really quickly, it was fun, and challenging at

times too,” he said. Commanding Officer RNZAF Ground Training Wing, Wing Commander Peter King said the training that recruits receive is challenging and is designed to prepare new enlistees for service in the RNZAF. “Those who graduate from the Command and Recruit Training Squadron are now well prepared to serve the RNZAF and the wider community,” he said. T he ot her ca d et f r om Blenheim was 18-year-old Amber Chauval, who will be getting a trade in force protection and, in particular, dog handling.

Picton man Ordinary Marine Technician (OMT) Alexander Skene is one of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s newest sailors and was recently recognised for attaining the highest level mariner skills during the Basic Common Training course. His prize was presented to him in front of family and friends at a graduation parade held on at Devonport Naval Base. OMT Skene was one of 74 men and women who graduated after 13

weeks of naval training. “Initial training was awesome. There were some lows at the time, but looking back I have no regrets,” said OMT Skene. The Navy training included an intense level of physical training, precision marching and parade training and an academic programme covering naval history, discipline, core values and maritime skills. This resulted in some immediate changes. “My fitness has

improved immensely and I have lost heaps of weight. I have also made heaps of new friends.” “I am hoping to get posted to one of the frigates, Te Kaha or Te Mana.” OMT Skene attended Queen Charlotte College. The Recruit Training Squadron Mariner Skills Excellence Award is awarded to the Basic Common Trainee who demonstrates the highest level of skills during mariner training.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: Do you support the marriage equality bill that was passed last week?

Hannah Webster Blenheim

It doesn’t affect me either way, I’m not really for it or against it.

I’m pleased that it went through, because I believe all people should have equal rights.

Yes and no, I was comfortable with it being civil union. I’m not overly religious but marriage is between a man and a woman.

I’m all about it, it’s like race separation for example, we look back now and think, ‘how could we have been so short sighted?’

I think it’s good, at the end of the day I think everyone should get the same opportunity to marry the one they love, male or female.

K2 Dear Ed, I experienced first hand experience of these drugs. On holiday with my daughters in Cambridge I needed to go to the bathroom at 11.30pm and tripped and my leg connected with the leg of the bed and gouged a chunk. Meg took me to Waikato Hospital and we sat there with four others to await our turn. This was a Sunday night and you would think it was Queen St on a Friday night. Friends were escorting and holding up a mate obviously

very drunk or on other stuff; a girl was out to it in a wheelchair and staff were trying to assist her without luck. Us others waited and waited and at 3am Meg asked when our turn was and was told 13 more urgent ones were priority so we went home. Next morning it took no more than 10 minutes to fix me up. I was greatly saddened by what our young ones were doing to themselves and I am against K2 and all that stuff. Pat Chant, Springlands

Same sex marriage Dear Ed, Interesting to see the TV viewers’ poll which said something like 78 percent were opposed to the passing of the same sex marriage bill. The media will make sure that one gets buried forever. The railroading of this legislation has been handled by powerful lobbies in Wellington and Auckland, a weak parliament made up of MPs only concerned for their futures (most young up and coming voters have been brain washed on the issue), a

largely pro-homosexual media, Labour Party and Green Party, and a gullible public who are too scared to stick their heads up on the issue for fear of being labelled homophobic. The small minority has got their way in trying to make the wider (weak) public believe homosexuality is as natural and normal as heterosexuality. For thousands of years it hasn’t been. Nor is it now. And what’s next on the liberal agenda to ‘advance’ our society? Silent majority

Climate change ‘expert’ Dear Ed, One of your correspondents has described Lord Monckton as the above. He certainly has a degree , but it is in classical architecture. Difficult to see the connection. He was evidently caught on camera in 2009 calling young protesters who believed in climate change “Hitler youth” and was sent a cease and de-

sist letter two years ago from the British House of Lords after he repeatedly claimed that he was a non-voting member of this body when he was not. Why is he more qualified to speak on climate change than any one else with no qualifications in the field whatsoever? Jill Martel Pelorus Sounds

Poppy Day Dear Ed, As a collector for Poppy Day on Friday, a ‘big thank you’ to everyone who donated in support for the Marlborough Returned Services Ass Welfare funds. One thing that really highlighted the day was the lovely new owners of New World who contributed a very large sum of money, so all their staff could be wearing poppies in support. How wonderful is that?

Lynley Fyfe Blenheim I think it’s great, basically I think that people are people, and should be able to marry whoever they want to marry.

It would be lovely in future to see many other companies and supermarkets do the same, or encourage their staff to wear a poppy in support for the Returned Services Assn Welfare funds. Once again, to everyone (customers i nclude d), thank-you all very much for your wonderful support on Poppy Day for our Marlborough R.S.A From the Collectors

The hell of war “I don’t have much of a story and my memory isn’t what it was,” Picton man John Bayley told Sun reporter, Chris Tobin. But as was revealed, John does have quite a story to tell. Each New Year the fireworks crackle and blaze over Picton. Hundreds enjoy the festive occasion but in a small flat not far from the Waitohi Recreational Reserve they rekindle nightmares for a 91-year-old man living there. As he struggles to sleep, John Bayley is back in a hell called the Battle of Arnhem with his mates in the elite ‘Red Devils’ British First Airborne – paratroopers – fighting Germans. In September 1944, after parachuting 60 miles behind the German lines the division had ended up surrounded. Holding out for nine days they suffered horrendous casualties. “I lost most of me mates there”, John says although he doesn’t give details. He can trace the time his nightmares began when three Allied fighters got behind a (Messerschmitt) ME109 and he saw what happened. “There was a rat-a-tat-tat. It (the ME109) went straight into the ground; there wasn’t a bit of bloody aircraft left to be seen. Just a big hole. “After this we were clearing a road, there were bodies in ditches, British, Americans, Germans, broken stuff and the thing that comes in my mind is there was four or six cows laying at the bottom of a ditch with their legs in the air; it upset me these poor bloody cows. That’s where I get my nightmare from seeing that plane and cows.” Of 10,000 men sent to the Netherlands and Arnhem, fewer than 2200 returned to Allied lines after the nine days fighting. John and other survivors were given permission to go and visit the families of mates who had been killed. “That was bloody tough, I went and saw quite a few.” One of the toughest was in a town in Kent where a woman asked if he knew a certain captain.

“I said yes, he was in my battery. The poor bugger had been hit by a flame thrower. That’s the worst thing anyone can be killed by. It takes longer to die. “I told her a lie. I said he’d been shot by a sniper.” Anger drove John to war. Anger at the Germans when they bombed the family home in 1939 leaving his mother a hysterical wreck. Anger, when in 1940 having moved to Coventry he saw 75 per cent of the city’s buildings destroyed with hundreds of civilians killed. “That’s what made me join up.” After extensive training he served in North Africa, then Italy where he was blown up. He and a mate had brought through two trailers of ammunition and had just parked the truck. He was walking away from the truck when a mortar bomb hit one of the trailers. Next thing he remembers is being in a hospital in Sicily where he soon recovered. However, a legacy of that blast is that John suffers from shakes – he had hoped for a postwar career as a signwriter but the shaking ruled out this possibility. There’s a lot more to John’s story than space will allow. He went on to serve in Palestine and became disllusioned with the military, so much so that in his own words, he couldn’t get to New Zealand quick enough. He and his wife Kathleen arrived in 1963. He has lived in Picton for 31 years; Kathleen died 17 years ago. “You’re always going to have wars.” he says. “There’s always bloody idiots like Hitler around who think they’re fireproof.” And for this ex-British serviceman, Anzac Day is important. “Yes, it’s a special day to remember your John Bayley proudly wears his medals and blazer bearing the emblem of the Airborne mates.” Forces, which shows Greek warrior Bellerophon mounted on the winged horse Pegasus.

Education

“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” - John Dewey

Garin College, Nelson Garin College is a relatively new player in the world of boarding schools. Established in 2002, the school and hostel is just 11 years old – but already the school has national sports champions, students gaining places in regional and national cultural competitions, leads the way in academic success in the Top-of-the-South, and has already developed a strong reputation for the quality of its modern music programme. Garin is a year 9-13, co-educational Catholic Integrated school built to absorb some of the population drift to Nelson – and sited at the hub of the Saxton Fields sports development in Nelson. Head Teacher John Boyce says that the joy of starting a new school is not the building (although he acknowledges that buildings designed for twenty-first century curriculum is a big

advantage). The real benefit is being able to employ a “stunning staff”, each expert in their field, and able to deliver that curriculum in an imaginative and creative way. He says the strengths of the school are its size (just 480 students and year 9-10 classes of 21-23 students), its Christian values (he calls it “back to the future” – old fashioned values wrapped in the best of forward thinking teaching and learning), and its hostel. The Garin hostel is a two-villa complex, housing 56 students in the heart of a new suburb just minutes from the school. They provide a well-supervised, positive and active community with boys and girls kept busy at their study and a very wide range of sporting, arts and service activities in the Nelson/Richmond area. The Hostel is currently full, and is collecting names for 2014 and 2015.

covered and use that as a guide when you study. Circle items that you know will require extra time. Be sure to plan extra time to study the most challenging topics. 3: The night before Cramming doesn’t work. If you’ve followed a study plan, the night before the test you should do a quick review and get to bed early. Remember, your brain and body need sleep to function well, so don’t stay up late! 4: The morning of the test Did you know that you think better when you have a full stomach? So don’t skip breakfast the morning of the test. Get to school early and do a ten-minute power study right before the test, so your brain is turned on and tuned up. 5: Test time Before the test begins, make sure you have everything you’ll need. Extra pens, calculator, water bottle (if you’re allowed one). Read the instructions! You want to make sure you are marking answers correctly. “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” - John Dewey

Tips for college & university students Once you have decided what and where to study, the next thing to do is start preparing yourself for college/ university life. Here are some useful tips. Use your campus Get to know your campus quickly. It’s where you will spend a lot of your time and by acclimatising yourself to it early, you will settle in much more quickly, making those first few weeks more pleasant. By knowing about your campus you will be able to make the most of the facilities. Your social network On top of getting to know your campus, consider getting to know and befriend as many people as possible, whether it be other students or lecturers. It can also open up lots of opportunities. A lecturer you can comfortably talk to may be able to

provide advice on your work, and it can be so much easier to do group work if you have friends on your course. Appreciate your time at college/ uni It’s a unique experience that most people can only really go through once so make the most of it. Some people focus so much on the fun side of things that they come away with a poor degree. Likewise some people are so into their work, they neglect to make friends and gain other experiences. Find a healthy balance. Textbooks Text books are typically a big expense so buy used ones where possible perhaps sell them on when you’ve finished with them to cut some of the costs. There is also the option of sharing a book between small groups of friends.

Going away to college/university is a unique experience so make the most of it.

Don’t miss the bus! Education preparing citizens for life A proper education provides society with the fundamentals of life, and is not something which should be passed by. Education is a productive and beneficial factor in a person’s development because the training of a human mind is not complete without education. Not only do we learn factual information through education, we also learn how to interact with each other, and grow as people and as a community. A decent education allows people to reach their full potential in many

areas of life, and reduces crime, poverty, poor health and mortality, while strengthening political participation and a nation’s work force, which in turn strengthens the economy. The implied social benefits from these impacts can be sizeable. New Zealand is lucky to have a strong education system which values both academic and practical skill-based learning, starting right here in Marlborough, there are a number of education providers dedicated to growing valuable employees and leaders for New Zealand’s future.

April is ‘Falls Month’ and local health advisors are promoting physical activity in an effort to preventing injury from falls.

Elderly falls can be prevented Nelson Marlborough health advisors say staying physically active is the most important thing to do to prevent falls in the elderly. Preventing injury from falls is the key focus for Nelson Marlborough health services during April Falls month. Falls are a big issue for everyone and the number one reason for admission to aged residential care and loss of independence. It has been estimated that one third of people aged over 65 and half of people over 80 years, suffer at least one fall per year. Falls also represent a significant number of the serious and sentinel adverse events reported by New Zealand hospitals. To tackle the issue Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMHB) has been working with Kim Hauora Wairau (KHW) Marlborough Primary Health Organisation and Nelson Bays Primary Health (NBPH), to provide good quality education around falls prevention and pathways for people to get the help they need. Nelson Marlborough Alliance Falls Prevention Coordinator, Glenis Bell said, “Multiple factors can play a role in causing falls, however improving your strength and

balance will reduce your risk of having a fall.” Marlborough PHO , Amaroa Katu said, “Staying physically active is the single most important thing you can do to reduce your risk of falling.” They both endorse the use of regular Vitamin D which has also been proven to prevent falls injuries. This can be prescribed by your GP. NMDHB Director of Allied Health, Hilary Exton said, “Increased risk of falling is one of the most serious problems associated with ageing. “Harm from a fall can change a patient’s life, we must do whatever we can to reduce harm from falls.” “In both the hospital and the community we are aiming to increase falls risk assessments and have a pathway of care to reduce any risks identified. We also are developing specialised resources to support those at high risk of future falls,” said Ms Exton. Ms Exton said, “Often acutely unwell, older people are at more risk of a fall when in hospital; nursing and multi-disciplinary assessment and planned management is critical to prevent this occurring.”

Pregnant? Get immunised During National Immunisation Week Nelson Marlborough Medical Officer of Health Dr Jill Sherwood is encouraging pregnant women to be immunised against whooping cough to protect themselves and their baby. From April 21-27, District Health Boards, immunisation providers and supporters will be promoting immunisation in communities throughout New Zealand. Immunisation helps protect both mother and baby against a serious disease that can make them extremely sick, said Dr Sherwood. For children and pregnant women immunisation against whooping cough is free and is the best way to prevent the disease. Children are immunised at six weeks, three months and five months old however they are not protected until they have completed all three vaccinations. All children also receive free boosters at four and 11 years of age. Pregnant women can be immunised for free between 28 and 38 weeks of pregnancy to protect their baby. Partners and other close family members may also consider being immunised as

further protection for the baby, however this is not funded. Dr Sherwood said, “Babies under one year old are especially vulnerable to complications from the disease and often catch it from older siblings, their parents or family members and friends. “People with coughs should be especially careful if they are likely to come in to contact with babies. Most adults don’t realise they have whooping cough but it is incredibly contagious with every one person who has it passing it on to around 17 others.” In Nelson Marlborough over the past couple of years more than 1200 people have contracted whooping cough with some children so sick they had to be hospitalised. “Immunity from immunisation or from the disease only lasts around five to 10 years so we advise pregnant women especially to be immunised to protect themelves and their newborn from the disease,”Dr Sherwood said. New Zealand children are eligible for free immunisations that protect against 10 childhood diseases. Teenage girls are also offered immunisation against human papillomavirus.

Queen Charlotte Yacht Club Starling sailors coming home from racing, Liese Belgrave out in front.

Yachties racing at Picton The New Zealand Starling Class National Championships started out of Picton, on the Queen Charlotte Sound on Monday. Eleven Queen Charlotte Yacht Club sailors are sailing in the nearly 100 strong starling class open fleet, with 12 races scheduled for the week, ending on Friday. The Open Fleet will sail outside Mabel Island and will be a great sight to be viewed from Victoria Domain hilltop or from on the water, another good viewing spot being from Shelley Beach or

Bob’s Bay. The club welcomes visitors to come a see the action, which is being run from a marquee next to Queen Charlotte Yacht Club with food and coffee available for supporters. There will also be a Development Fleet of new Starling sailors who are not considered experienced enough to sail in the Open Fleet, which will be in Picton Harbour. Taylor Burn, Callum Radford and Henry Gibbs should make up the leading QCYC pack, with

Liese Belgrave a strong contender for the girls. Tough competition was expected from the South Island Champ, George Gautry. The event is under the direction of Principal Race Officer Gerald Martin and Event organiser Vice Commodore Ian Gardiner, and the Protest Committee is a very experienced panel of national and International Judges chaired by John Bullot. Races will have a late start tomorrow, to honour Anzac Day.
