Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk A group of Marlborough College students, including MBC student Thornton Church (16) have created a mural masterpiece on the concrete pillars of the Alfred Street carpark. The past two weekends have seen a flurry of paintbrushes as art students from the colleges created a colourful scene for those using the parking building. Continued page 2.

Scooter Safari raises more than $150,000 By Robbie Parkes Fundraising efforts for this year’s Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari have exceeded expectations. As of Tuesday, $150,000 has been raised for the Cancer Society. On Saturday, 250 scooter enthusiasts will brave harsh conditions to travel 252 km from Christchurch to Hokitika. The Safari was started in 2009 by Jayne and Mike Rattray of Christchurch to support friend and colleague Blair Newton who was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. In 2009, $14,000 was raised and another $126,000 in 2010. Two teams from Harcourts, Blenheim are making the journey. Blair is also the son-in-law of Chris Greenhill of the Blenheim branch. Tracey Monaghan, one of the riders from Harcourts said the amount of exposure and money raised for the cause has been amazing. “It’s got a long following and it’s snowballing,” she said. Blair appeared on television the

other day, raising about $10,000, she said. Tracey’s team of three have made over $500 while Chris’s team have made $765 to date. She said a lot of people have been keen to donate and the support around town has been

great. “We’re all looking forward to it,” she said. “It’s a fantastic day and the whole atmosphere of 200 scooters heading down the road, it’s a sight to behold,” she said. She said thermal tops and bot-

toms are a must, but the locals along the way keep them going with pies, soup and the like. “A lot of the local businesses along the road support us,” she said. The Harcourt teams leave for Christchurch today.

artists add mural flair Continued from Page 1. “It all started with a classmate coming up with the idea of a mural in town, and because he was part of the Youth Forum they got behind the idea,” Thornton says. Local mural artist Ben Moore came on board as a mentor, helping with the ideas and painting.

The mural has been painted to depict an archway over the public walkway which runs through the parking building. On one side there is a traditional New Zealand landscape, above is a sky and on the other side is a scene showing a person pushing open a door to a weird and wacky realm.

“This mural really embraces the random ideas that we as teenagers come up with. It was loads of fun and we look forward to doing it again,” Thornton says. Youth Forum member Max Bicknell (16) says the Forum was happy with how the mural project went and commended the students for their team effort.

BULL WALK Today (Friday), three Marlborough stud breeders will be displaying Angus bulls to be auctioned in June. PGG Wrightson Ltd will auction 21 Angus bulls at the 49th annual bull sale on June 18 at the Marlborough Saleyards at Riverlands. The walk today will be from 10am til 3.30pm. On display will be Blacknight Angus, Brackenfield Angus Stud and Waterfall Angus.

Drivers must be aware of the consequences “I did 12 to 15 houses a week and now, physically I can only just about do my own,” she said. Toni used to ride horses but can’t do it now because of the jarring of the riding. “I’ve got nothing behind me and due to this fellow I’ve had to change my lifestyle,” she said. She still suffers panic attacks and it has impacted on her children. Her daughter saw the end result of the crash, not knowing her mother was actually involved. “Due to somebody else’s ignorance she had to see that,” she said. “She shouldn’t have that worry.” Toni said she just wants to point out the effects of using your phone while driving. “My whole thing is just making people aware of the consequences,” she said. “If you can’t stay off you’re phone, turn it off.”

By Robbie Parkes Since suffering injuries from a crash last year, Toni McKenzie wants more people to be aware of the consequences of using your phone while driving. The accident happened near the Grove Rd roundabout in February last year. A driver crashed into the back of Toni’s car while she was waiting at the roundabout. Toni said the man who hit her was texting on his phone, but was never charged for it. “I’d seen him on his phone all the way down Grove Rd,” she said. Even though he was never caught for it, it was the effects of the crash that really changed her life, she said. “I had to change my job,” she said She used to be a cleaner and most of her work involved physical labour but since receiving double whiplash from the collision has had to quit.

REDUCE SPEED LIMIT

Toni said there are a lot of drivers around town using their phones while driving. She said on any given day she sees about 10 or 12 people texting or talking on their mobiles.

“I think it is a lack of education,” she said. “It seems to me the police are more concerned about people’s WOF but this is life and death.”

Never too nippy for country kids By Annabelle Latz A good few hardy youngsters turned up at the Awatere Rugby Club on Tuesday evening for a dose of activity. The Young Country ute was on its way to the Young Farmer Grand Final in Dunedin, and stopped in Seddon for a run around after getting off the ferry

in Picton. Despite the cold, about 20 children from Seddon School turned up for some sack race relays, rugby ball kicking and a BBQ. “It was a bit nippy, but they kept busy,” said Glenn Blackmore, manager of the Senior Awatere Rugby Team. The Awatere Rugby Senior

Team enjoyed some touch rugby with the youngsters before their training session, then performed a haka afterwards. “A couple of people from the Young Country ute dressed up as cows, and the kids had a go at the haka too,” said Glenn. T he National Ban k You ng Farmers Competition started

on Wednesday, and finishes tomorrow. Seven finalists are taking part from all around New Zealand, selected from 22 District Finals. The finalist representing Tasman, which includes Marlborough district, is Michael Lilley, 26, a vet in Murchison.

There is a call for the speed limit to be reduced near rural Blenheim schools. The NZ Transport Agency will trial variable speed limits outside five North Island primary schools for up to two years from next month. Electronic signs at each school will display the speed limit for each school during their peak pick up and drop off times. The main risk that has been identified for many rural schools was the risk of vehicle crashes from turning into or out of school grounds to drop-off of pick up children.

ACTIVIST FAREWELLED The funeral of local longstanding activist Rosa Oliver was attended by 150 people on Tuesday at St Mary’s Catholic Church. Rosa was a well known human rights campaigner and pacifist who died last week aged 91.

For the second year running, Moa Beer scoped the most medals for a kiwi craft brewery at the Australian International Beer Awards. They came home with 11 medals - six silver and five bronze. Last year they returned with seven. The awards were judged by a panel of international professionals, and an affection for the kiwi brew was obviously present. “Looking at the company our medals are in gives us confidence that our beers are truly world class” said Moa master brewer David Nicholls. The Blenheim brewers went over with a new batch called the Moa McMoa (special reserve) which scooped a silver. Fellow kiwi brewers Croucher Brewing Companyand Garage Project won trophies for best pilsner and best specialty respectively. The brewery found international prestige last year at the Asia Beer Awards, winning 12 medals.

The fitting out of the new Lynfords store in the former Smiths City building on Scott St is well underway and a grand opening isn’t far off. Owners Lindsay and Kay Thomason have been making the move for the past three weeks from their old shop further down the street. “We’ve only actually had a month to do it but we’ve made amazing progress,” said Kay. She said there has been a few hiccups due to the state of the place. “Just because of the way the building has been left, there are things we’ve had to deal with,” she said. “Because we’re doing it ourselves, we are hitting a few snags.” Kay said the tradesmen had been great. She said they are hoping to open a week or a fortnight after Queen’s Birthday weekend.

PGG Wrightson building has new owner The PGG Wrightson building on the corner of Kinross St and Sutherland Tce has found a new owner and a new purpose. Owner of Dog Point Vineyard, Ivan Sutherland bought the property recently and will repurpose the building as a wine wareouse. “We just need to do some slight interior alterations,” he said. It will be a temperature controlled warehouse. The work is expected to be completed in six weeks time. The building had been on the market for about 18 months to lease but the previous owners sold the property unconditionally in February.

The three Top of the South mayors are planning to explore opportunities that may be possible from joint purchasing and sharing services. The Mayors and the CEOs of Nelson City and Tasman and Marlborough District Councils met on Wednesday to discuss the financial advantages of working together. They have identified roading, the single biggest budget item for each council, as one area to explore. Roading in Marlborough is currently undertaken by the New Zealand Transport Agency through its local office,

Marlborough Roads, which saves money by managing the state highways and local roads together. These kinds of concepts would be explored further in an effort of cutting costs in other areas. It was agreed that a draft Heads of Agreement be drawn up for each Council to consider. It would require all three councils to commit resources to examining the issues. It’s hoped that each Council can make a decision on its commitment to this project within the next two months.

By Robbie Parkes Te Hauora O Ngati Rarua’s newest smoke-free advocate aims to make a big impact on the Marlborough community. Cynthia de Joux joined the Hauora as the new Aukati Kaipaipa kaimahi on Monday. Her role requires her to be a smokefree officer, communicating those messages to the public. Cynthia is of Te Atiawa and Ngai Tahu descent and came to the Hauora in July last year, working as the Kaimahi for chronic disease management nurses. She said her new role involves more self-management work. “This one is a bit more of a community based role,” she said. Her job is about prevention and she is commited to working with everyone to reduce or give up smoking. She does a lot of one-on-one work and aims to get involved with a lot of youth in the area. “That’s all age groups, there’s no barriers, just to support them, it’s great,” she said. She said there is an element of status and peer pressure that still comes with smoking. “We all know it’s bad so why is it still happening?” she said. “There’s a lot of negative exposure.” Cynthia has a background in Aquaculture and Fisheries Management and but left the industry to go down a different career path. “I want a job that focuses on my family as well, so health promotion works well,” she said. Her two children go to Mayfield

School and Queen Charlotte College and she said she wants to use that to get more involved with youth as part of her job. “I’m sort of wanting to follow them and find opportunities as they grow,” she said. Hauora contracts manager Joe Puketapu said they offer general smokefree help and services but cater to a specific demographic. “We’re focused on getting the message out to our younger people, particularly young Maori girls,” he said. “The other area of focus is on pregnant Maori women.” He said that statistics for Maori men who smoke has dropped over the past few years, but Maori women are still up there. Hauora general manager Amoroa Luke said it is about being able to engage with the wider community.

Although the Expo has ended, Placemakers is encouraging those who missed out to visit the store any time for a personal consultation on their kitchen and bathroom projects. Kitchen and bathroom consultant Olwyn Evans is on hand to share her experience in design, backed up by sales consultant Christie Scaife. Olwyn graduated from Otago University as a senior student, majoring in design.

The saying ‘crime never pays’ certainly came true for two unemployed females on Tuesday after they were caught and arrested for shoplifting at The Warehouse Blenheim store. At 10:20am the 32-year-old and 18-year-old women allegedly entered The Warehouse on May 21 and purchased $205.95 worth of household items. The pair then returned to the store and allegedly stole the identical items. They left the store but returned a short time later with the stolen items and they presented the receipt for the household items they had purchased earlier and requested and obtained a cash refund for these items valued at $205.90. The two women were held in custody to appear in court. Wednesday, May 23rd At 11.55am a 46 year old manager was arrested for assault with intent to injure after a historic domestic related incident, he appeared in Court on Wednesday and has been released on bail to reappear on the 18th of June 2012. At 2.35pm a 36 year old woman was arrested for shoplifting after she allegedly stole toiletries from The Warehouse. At 5.15pm a 20 year old woman was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon (namely a machete and a hockey stick) and assault after she has allegedly chased another woman from a Whitney address. She has been bailed to appear in the Blenheim District Court on the 28th of May 2012.

Fragrant feijoas

The Sun

gardening

this week

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Many people are still shy of this little fruit and often steer away from tasting it, but according to local feijoa grower Rachel Rodger, you couldn’t get a better fruit to grow and eat. Rachel and husband Michael have 516 trees growing over a third of a hectare on their Waihopai Valley property. The couple began planting in 2006/2007 and to date have 10 varieties including those of early, mid and late seasons. “It all began with some bare land on our property which is owned by family. I kept looking at the land wondering what we could do with it. “I knew feijoa trees were pretty hardy plants so we decided to give it a go,” Rachel smiles. Rachel and Michael joined the Feijoa Growers Association and put their fruit through a local cherry orchard to be graded. “When the cherry orchard owners sold up and left for overseas we couldn’t get our fruit graded, so a group of us decided to form a co-op company – Future Fruit Ltd. Future Fruit was established in order for growers from various regions throughout the upper South Island of New Zealand to market their fruit. “We purchased the grader and equipment from the cherry orchard and found a packhouse in Richmond which is responsible for the grading of quality fruit for markets throughout New Zealand,” she says. The feijoas are graded into four size categories; Jumbo, large, medium and small. Rachel joined the company as the communications director and in her role she liaises with the packhouse manager, collates figures and information and takes care of administration duties. This time of year has been particularly busy for growers here and in Nelson as many began their picking last month. But for Rachel and Michael in particular their feijoa harvest has been delayed by nearly three weeks due to the unusual summer weather. “The whole season is later than normal as picking normally begins around ANZAC Day. “I think we are looking at mid June this year for harvest to be finished, assuming we don’t have any massive frosts in between. We are hoping in a month or so our fruit will all be picked,” she says. With their Feijoas the company produces two lines of fruit. Market fruit which is picked off the tree, and process fruits which is sold to process companies which turns the fruit into pulp for use in the likes of sauces and drinks. “One thing people may not realise is that ripe feijoas are meant to be picked off the tree. “When they have fallen to the ground they are over ripe and sometimes bruised if left there a day or more,” she says.

Raw feijoa cheesecake The fresh clean taste of feijoas combined with creamy cashews is a match made in heaven so make sure to try this uncooked and dairy free recipe out while they’re still in season. Ingredients: Base 1 cup raw almonds 2 cups dried dates Filling 3 cups raw cashews juice of 1/2 lemon 1/4 tsp sea salt 1 cup cold pressed coconut oil 3-4 tbsp of raw organic honey 2 cups of chopped feijoas for the filling + 2 cups for the topping Instructions Base Blend the almonds in a food processor until they are like fine breadcrumbs (save a couple of tablespoons aside to dust the cake tin)

Chop the dates and add to the almond meal. Blend until fully combined like cookie dough. Brush the base and sides of a spring-form cake tin with coconut oil and dust with ground almonds. You could also cut a circle of baking paper to line the tin. Press the date/almond dough into the base of the tin. Filling Soak the cashews in water for 2-3hrs Place the sealed jar of coconut oil in a bowl of hot water to melt for about 10 minutes Drain and rinse the cashews Add all filling ingredients to a high speed blender and blend until smooth Pour the mixture into the tin on top of the base Place in the refrigerator to set for a couple of hours Serve with fresh chopped feijoas on top.

TOP FIVE ROSES FOR POTS • Scentasia: Lovely soft creamy-yellow fragrant flowers. Free-flowing, disease resistant rose for all summer. • Goldilocks: Has wonderful golden yellow blooms borne in clusters on a vigorous plant with healthy light green foliage. • Iceberg: Classic ‘white’. Has long been favourite for its constant free flowering from early spring to late summer. • Hauraki: Low-spreading patio rose produces masses of repeat-flowering semi-double scarlet blooms with briliant golden stamens. • White Flower Carpet : Suits a large container as it matures to approx 80cm high x 1 metre wide. Starts flowering in late spring and continues through to late winter in mild climates. HINT: Any rose grown in a container must be thoroughly and consistently fed and watered over the growing season in order for it to prosper.

Councillor Terry Sloan joined Tua Marina school children in trying it out. “It’s amazing watching the kids and seeing how they improve after just a few times around the circuit,” he said. “I’m looking forward to bringing my boys out to have a go.” Rarangi Residents’ project manager Sarah Gray acknowledged the support of the Council and DOC. “The bike track has taken a few years to plan so it’s great to see it

finished and already popular with kids and families,” she said. “People from all over Marlborough are welcome to come and use it, we just ask that you wear a helmet and please don’t ride the track when it’s wet.” Sarah says the track cost was kept down thanks to generous support from local companies: Hirequip, Simcox Construction, HEB, Findlater Construction, Nelson Forests Kaituna Sawmill and Ground Effect cycle clothing.

Viticulture industry has a long way to go impacted on wine prices. “It’s positive but it’s going to have a very slow gaining effect for everyone in Marlborough,” he said. Winter does change what work is done and how it’s done, but David said the weather doesn’t affect them too badly. “Growing grapes and being in any industry that is producing a product from the land has a lot of natural environmental issues to contend with,” he said. “Winter’s winter.” David said that everyone will tell you the economy has had a huge impact on crop prices and the viticulture industry in general since 2008. “The pre-2008 period was a time of exceptional growth and very good economic times for everyone.”

By Robbie Parkes The year brought a late vintage for wine growers and with the harvest over and winter on the horizon, the industry still has a way to go. “I think the way people do things, we’re all very conscious about the costs of the things” said David King of King Contracting Limited. King Contracting Limited works predominantly in the viticulture industry, covering all aspects of contracting work. With winter on its way the move into pruning work has begun. “We’ve just completed the harvesting period and washed all our machines down and put them to bed.” There has been a shortage of fruit this year, which in some regards has

“And since 2008 it’s been a major learning curve for wineries, grape growers, contractors and suppliers.” It has put everyone under a lot of pressure. Like everyone in the industry, David said they’ve had to make cuts and think about more cost effective ways to get through the times. “We’ve taken steps to really trim back costs and we certainly haven’t increased our prices despite the fact that diesel and labour costs keep rising,” he said. “Everyone has probably had to look at their expenditure.” David said both the economy and the industry will take a long time to right itself. “I think it’s going to be a long, slow haul out of the situation,” he said.

Milestone for Villa Maria Wines

By Annabelle Latz Villa Maria Winery celebrated 50 years of existence this month. The Sun caught up with senior wine maker Jeremy McKenzie, to get the inside word on the world of quality wine making for him and his quality team. He joined Villa Maria in 2006, and took senior post as Marlborough wine maker in 2008. Jeremy has seen some changes in his career. His biggest change has been shifting from a small family New Zealand owned winery to a larger scale family New Zealand-owned winery. Jeremy has been involved in creating better efficiencies in operation amongst the vines and in the winery. “And in addition to this, dealing with an array of fruit from every nook and cranny in Marlborough, some of which is now organic.” Jeremy’s passion lies with creating an excellent Pinot Noir. His favourite part of the job is Jeremy McKenzie vintage. He harvested his first grapes in 1962 and made his first wine. Throughout the 1960’s Villa Maria was virtually a one-man band, with George’s wife, Gail, supporting him in his venture. He made dry red and white wines, sourcing grapes from the greater Auckland region. In the early 1970’s he started to employ staff and the company began to expand rapidly, and today employs always available more than 250 permanent staff.

I arrive.” With the help of her friend Rebekah Bugler, Ashleigh has been busy selling raffle tickets to neighbours, friends, family and students at her school. Her aim is to sell 1000 tickets at $1 each, and has pledged $500 of the raised funds will be put up as the prize and the remaining amount will be donated to Cure Kids. To date the family has sold 150 tickets but in order to reach her goal, she is appealing for more people to buy them. To purchase a ticket or make a donation contact Kerry Neal on 0211 069 586.

Marl Girls’ youth week a success Youth week has been and gone but Marlborough Girls’ College has made it one to remember. The week was full of events, ranging from bakesales, to banner making, to Zumba. “The main point of youth week is to appreciate youth and really celebrate what it means to be young nowadays,” said promotions and events prefect Harriet Lintern. Harriet, along with fellow prefects Meriana Johnsen and Laura Morrison and their committee organised the weeks’ activities. Media teacher Diane Austin, also in charge of communications, events and promotion for the school said

the week really highlighted some positives. “It’s been a very, very succesful youth week for the school,” she said. On Tuesday, the girls held a bakesale that coincided with the cross country. The girls could bring their favourite childhood food to sell, fairybread being a winner on the day. “Which made it successful,” said Meriana. “We didn’t think there would be such a big turnout,” said Laura. The girls raised $325.60 from the bakesale, which they still need to decide what to do with. “I think they made more money

than any bakesale at the school,” said Diane. On Wednesday they did some Zumba and today they are making a banner to celebrate the week. “People come up and write what being a youth means to them,” said Harriet. Diane said the aim wasn’t to fundraise but to celebrate youth, the money was just a bonus. Common Cold Facts

Washing your hands is the best way to prevent a cold because cold germs can survive for up to 3 hours outside of the nasal passage. Paracetamol is generally used to treat the common cold.

ALLEN, Darren James: 30 April, 2012

Colds are more common during seasonal changes when humidity is low.

all whites draw All whites game ends with a draw The All Whites match against El Salvador in Texas has ended with a 2-2 draw. The squad was full of fresh faces as injury and unavailability pushed the big names to the benches. New captain Tommy Smith along with debutants Ian Hogg and Cameron Howieson made the field on the day.

right: scott mcdermid has a final word with (dad) craig before the race start.

Father and son put in the hard yards for silver By Robbie Parkes Father and son team, Craig and Scott McDermid did the hours and placed second in the 2012 Pukekohe 6-Hour Endurance Race. The Blenheim duo went up to Auckland for the event on Saturday, May 12, now in its 16th year. They split the workload on the Pukekohe Park Raceway, pushing their 2JZ-GTE powered Toyota Levin AE101 to the max during their six hour stint. Around 30 cars entered, including a number of Porsche’s, a

Ferrari F430, a Dodge Viper and a number of late model BMW’s. Craig said their strategy, as always with long distance races, was to go without breaking anything and keep on top of the likes of tyre wear and fuel stops. “Keeping going, keeping focused,” he said. With Scott being faster and more comfortable racing in the dark, Craig took the drivers seat for the first innings at 2.00 pm. They made their first driver and fuel change around the 1 hour 40

mark. They pushed the rev’s a bit and had to make a few alterations to the car during the race. Near the end of their run they saw a Porsche hit the pits and not return, another one scattered across the track and a few more cars run off the track. With about 4 laps to go, and with Scott behind the wheel, the fuel light came on. Scott came into the pits only to run out in the pit lane. Team members had to rush him

to the garage for a fuel top up. “We were fortunate he came into the pit stop when he did,” said Craig. In the end the car finished in second place behind the Ferrari, but they were very happy with the result. “It went pretty much faultlessly,” said Craig. “To have a dry race from start to finish was certainly a bonus.” Craig and Scott will be heading to Taupo next for a 4 hour race in July.
