Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Last Friday’s Combined Colleges’ Formal quite literally went off with a bang. Revving V8 engines and spectacular fire performers heralded the arrival of students at the Marlborough Convention Centre for their Circus themed formal. Not only were their modes of transport quirky, but so were some of the outfits. There were clowns towing students on carts, a trailer dressed as a lion cage, a golf buggy, an Accessman electric lift and even a live
band performing on a truck deck. To match their grand entrances students dressed in a variety of colours, theatrical makeup and even Phantom of the Opera costumes. Students walked the red carpet to the applause of the large crowd which turned out to watch them arrive despite the chilly evening temperature. “The outfits are amazing and they all look really stunning, I’m glad I came to watch,” said one spectator.
Marlborough Girls’ College teacher Michelle Dawson arrived amongst the students and said she was looking forward to a fantastic night. “The decorations are amazing and all of the students look like they’re having fun already.” Marlborough Convention Centre worked with Police and security to ensure a steady flow of vehicles in an effort to avoid long traffic delays. Chilly mid-winter splash By Annabelle Latz The chit chat and buzz at Picton foreshore on Sunday kept things warm before the annual mid-winter swim. Swimmers, dunkers and splashers by their hundreds turned up for the early afternoon dip, and so did the sunshine. Members of Picton RSA challenged themselves to take a swim. Doug Dushby, in his eighties, is Welfare Officer for the group. He was not swimming, but was pleased with the efforts of his peers. “They are in good training form, they have just come back from swimming Cook Strait as a wee practice,” he laughed. Savannah Saunders from Blenheim was taking part for the first time, and admitted to being a bit nervous. “But it will be good.” Her friend Alice Regan had done it
once before, and together they made up the team ‘Bed Hair Day.’ Eli Speedy was dressed up as an ‘Old Man’ and said the water was okay once the body got used to it. Skye Thorp and Samantha Brimble were representing Picton Girl Guides, and went back in the water three times because it was so much fun. Megan Cook, 14, from Rarangi Surf Life Saving was one of the younger participants, but one of the most experienced. “This is my ninth time.” Her surf lifesaving friend Tegan Turner was taking part for the first time. Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade sprayed 1800 litres of warm water over the swimmers for some relief after their brave efforts. The major prize of the day was the Cuddons Heat Pump, and was won by Liz Millar from Spring Creek.

Too few local volunteers By Robbie Parkes More people need to put their hands up to help out in Marlborough. Support from hardworking volunteers was plentiful at last week’s Volunteer Awareness Week. Compared to other regions though, Marlborough has one of the worst number of volunteers. According to regional data from Nielsen Media Research’s Consumer and Media Insights (CMI) Survey Q4 2010 – Q4 2011, Marlborough is second to last in national rankings. Approximately 25.64% of the Marlborough population aged 10 years and over are volunteers. This is compared to a national average of 32.05%. Gisborne are at the bottom of the ladder at 20.51%. However, the support for these volunteers was evident on Friday when about 150 people representing
a wide variety of volunteering organisations turned up in Market St. Volunteer Marlborough manager Deb Remacha said the event was just to get a snapshot of the volunteers in Marlborough and thank them for their efforts during the week. She said it was great to see so many people turn out on the day. The Blenheim ASB bank team were also out on Friday to raise money for St John Appeal week, cooking up sausages donated by Meaters of Marlborough. Volunteer Awareness Week ran from June 17 to 23 with the theme - Building Communities Through Volunteering. Police investigate assault complaint inbriefThe Sun Blenheim Police are investigating a complaint from a woman that she was sexually assaulted in Eltham Road between Rogers and Stratford Streets at about 11.55pm last Thursday, June 21. During the course of the inquiry police have determined that just prior to the assault the victim spoke to a male who was walking on Eltham Road. Police have also determined that at the time of the assault a vehicle drove past the scene. Detective Sergeant Dave Woodley of the Marlborough CIB said Police are
very keen to speak to the male who the victim spoke to and the occupant or occupants of the vehicle that drove past. He appealed to these persons to make contact with the police. He also repeated that Police would like to hear form anyone else who was in Eltham Road in the area between Rogers and Stratford Sts around midnight last Thursday. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Marlborough CIB on 578 5279.

Crash results in serious injuries Head on crash in Grovetown At 5.42pm last Friday, there was a head on motor vehicle crash on SH 1, Grovetown. A 52 year old female was driving her Suzuki and appears to have travelled into the path of a Holden, driven by a 43 year old male. Both drivers sustained serious injuries and were flown to Wellington Hospital for treatment.
Neal Road crash At about 5.45pm last Friday, there was a single motor vehicle crash on Neal Road. A 41 year old male welder was driving his Mazda Capella northbound when he hit a pool of water. This caused him to lose control of his vehicle, which spun around, crossed to the opposite side of the road and came to rest after taking out a
number of trees and damaging a fence. The vehicle was extensively damaged but the driver was uninjured. The driver was processed for drink driving and returned a positive result of 615 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. He faces charges of Driving with Excess Breath Alcohol and Careless Driving and will appear before the Court on July 16th.
New beginnings and old memories By Annabelle Latz Nostalgic hands have grasped and taken home snippets of one of Blenheim’s historic restaurants. On Saturday the garage sale at the former restaurant site, behind Briscoes on High St, marked the first step towards the demolition of the building. From saucers to tables, and items that had been donated to the garage sale, everything was up for grabs. Rebel Sport will be built in its place. Rod Duke, Group Managing Director and Deputy Chairman of Briscoe Group Limited, who own Rebel Sport, said the sporting goods and clothing store will open in September or October.
“People are taking pieces for sentimental reasons,” said Michelle King, who was helping at the garage sale, and eyed up a few pieces for herself too. Michelle said the building has been a great asset over the years, but has passed its used by date. She said everyone has been positive about the development of the space. “They are excited because we are positive about Blenheim, which is a little city that is moving, and we have to keep up with that.” Wendy Cresswell used to dine there, and brought some children’s toys for her grandchildren. “It used to be beautiful here,” she said. Demolition will begin this week.

Rockquest queen for a second time By Annabelle Latz A last minute song change was worth making for fourteen year-old Clara van Wel. It is becoming a familiar feeling for the Marlborough Girls’ College student; she took the top prize in the Marlborough CokeSmokefreeRockquest for the second year in a row. Taking the stage at the Marlborough Convention Centre on Saturday evening, she admitted to a few nerves. “But once I was on stage the crowd gave me a buzz. I just didn’t want to get off the stage.” Compared to her winning performance last year, Clara said she had developed into her music this time around. “I felt like I had more to bring.” With her acoustic guitar, in her 1940’s themed black lace dress and pearl necklace, the curly-haired slim figured musician played and sang ‘For a moment’ and ‘What else is there,’ which she wrote at the end of last year. “A lot of my musical inspiration is sub conscious, it comes from my reading and the massive range of music I listen to.” At the moment, Clara is listening to an English musician called Birdy. “She’s a young girl like me, I like her.”
Clara’s big inspiration comes from well respected kiwi musician Bic Runga. She was really impressed with all her peers who performed on Saturday evening. “Everyone was fantastic, there is so much musical talent in Marlborough.” Clara’s best friend Taylor was her back stage support, and her dad Alex and little sister Daisy were in the front row. “My little sister was absolutely gorgeous.” Clara van Wel's performance at CokeSmokefreeRockquest on Clara’s reward for the win Saturday night was loved by many, as she took the winning title for the second year in a row. was a big sleep. “I’d had lots of busy nights 15-minute demonstration of original music leading up to it.” Marlborough Boys’ College band Two each, to send off to the selectors of the conBrothers, singer and acoustic guitarist Jayden tenders for the National finals competition in Paul and his brother, backing vocalist Jesse Hamilton on September 22. Enjoying speech and drama Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Speech and communication is filling Fairhall School students with confidence and leadership skills. Last week all the pupils finished a week-long assessment by a Speech New Zealand oral assessor, taking part in the oral communication syllabis. The school has been has been using the Speech NZ programme for six years. Every two years students perform poems, speeches, drama and role plays, and are assessed on performance. “There’s lots of confidence, it’s lovely to see,” said oral assessor Christine Nash, who was down from Auckland last week. She said confidence with speaking and performing aloud to an audience reinforces communication skills they display amongst each other from day to day. “It’s really a pleasure to see all these children so skilled.” Denyse Healy, Deputy Principal at Fairhall School, said oral language is such a valuable tool. “It’s a valuable skill for life,” said Denyse. She said the Speech NZ syllabus is simple to use and the school does not have to start from scratch. “It’s seeing how excited the pupils are, they come out buzzing,” said Denyse. Pam Logan, chairperson of Speech NZ, lives in Blenheim, and is also a private tutor. “I just think that the oral communication is so good to help young people focus on putting their ideas out there.” Pam hopes more schools in Marlborough will pick up the Speech NZ syllabus. “The leadership programme included would be particularly good for other schools.”

Sun readers have their say... Q: How much did you spend on the school formal? Was it beyond your reach?
Karen Wilkins Blenheim
Josie Mason Blenheim
Belle Davenport Blenheim
Jack Keown (Head Boy) Blenheim
Haylee Edwards-Nally Blenheim
My niece bought her dress on sale for $10 and her friends did her hair and makeup for free. You don’t need to spend a lot to enjoy the event. Plus she’s saving for university so there’s no point spending hundreds of dollars on a dress she would wear once.
To keep down the cost I hired a dress off a friend who conveniently also does my hair and makeup. I didn’t see the point in spending a lot of money.
My dress cost me $20, so the only real cost for me was getting my makeup done and paying for the formal ticket. There’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars on one night.
I think it turns out to be much more expensive for girls with the hair, makeup and dresses. With guys it’s pretty easy to just throw a suit on and go.
I spent around $600 and my family gave me some money which helped go towards everything. It was certainly worth it for such a great night.

Theatre Dear Ed, The Theatre Trust is desperate to get started because they know that once building is commenced, it will be finished & any shortfall in funds will have to be paid by the rate payers. Same goes for the $200K annual grant for running costs - if it happens to be $300K or $400K or more, it will still be the rate payers who will have to pay - basically they will have an open cheque book. Never mind, the few who can afford to attend will have achieved their goal of a new theatre with the rate payers paying for it, and continuing to pay to keep it running. Just like the Nelson theatre & the Dunedin stadium.
The Mayors estimate of $11 to upgrade the existing theatre seems a bit high. For a couple of million, OSH could be satisfied, dressing rooms etc given a makeover & we would still have a 400 seat theatre, that even now, is not often full. With the rate payers acting as guarantor for the proposed $2M+ loans, we will almost certainly have to pay, just like the Aviation Museum ‘loan’. In the current economic climate, which may not get better for many years to come, no Government will have money for ‘nice-to-have’ facilities such as theatres. Dear Ed, In the Sun on Friday 15 June under “false advertising”, ‘What’s going on’ claims there to be false advertising in the photos of units at Marina Cove but what the writer did not do was read that there were two different units.

Critical but smiling Blenheim man and father of two, Martin Kenny says despite having a life threatening condition he is an ordinary bloke, as Celeste Lodewyk finds out. Marty, as he is affectionately known, was born with the condition Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) which he was diagnosed with only 10 years ago. Before then doctors believed he suffered from asthma and it became something that Marty simply “adapted to”. PPH is rare and affects blood vessels in the lungs that carry blood from the heart to the lungs where it picks up oxygen, and in Marty’s case it will prove fatal unless he undergoes a life saving double lung transplant. According to his mother, Sharon Knight, Marty will be the first person from Blenheim to undergo this procedure. “From what we have been told he is the only one in

Second title for Bakkerij By Robbie Parkes Picton Village Bakkerij can proudly call itself the best bakery in the south – for the second time running. Picton Village was awarded the title at the 2012 Bakery of the Year awards in Auckland last Monday night. It also came third overall in the country, behind first place winners Viands Bakery of Te Awamutu and Kapiti Cakes & Bakery in second. Having entered 13 sections and being awarded medals in 12, Bakery Manager Sarah O’Bryan said they really did solidly throughout the competition. “It’s the first year we’ve ever come so high.” “It was just fantastic for us, the exposure we get is really, really good for the business.” She said they actually entered everything but ran out of time for the decorative cake section. It was a bit of a struggle at times, she said, as they had a lot of products to make on the day. And because they had to come all the way from the South Island, some things had to be made prior and taken on the long journey up to Auckland. They took products that they don’t make on a regular basis so the brainstorming session beforehand ended up quite fun. She said their wins really boiled down to the quality of baking, and obviously the taste. The award just shows that everything has been done to a really high standard. “It’s very, very important for us to have that recognition, and we’re absolutely thrilled.”

Picton Village Bakkerij staff at the Blenheim shop Ethan Cole and Dianne Gregg. “For a small bakery like us, with only one producing site and four full-time bakers it really means a lot.” Sarah said the event was just incredible, getting to meet all the different people in the industry was amazing. “The people from Kapiti Cakes were great,” she said.
Thomas Thomas of Kapiti Cakes showed an interest in the Picton bakers pies and is even heading down on a bit of an exchange to learn the trade. Likewise, Picton will send someone up to Kapiti to learn about their cakes. “It’s a great opportunity to cross train.”

The children in rooms five and six at Rapaura School got a special visit from Wilson the New Zealand falcon on Friday, even singing their very own song to welcome him. They each came up with a line for the song which was sung to the tune of Frere Jacques. Wilson and his trainer Diana Dobson visited schools in the region as part of the Department of Conservation programme, raising awareness about the endangered native bird. This was Wilson’s second visit to the school. The two classes had been doing a lot of work about the native bird. Marlborough Falcon Conservation Trustee Amanda Simcic said this extra visit was an opportunity to see how the younger children would react. “It’s given the kids a love of native birds and helped them realise the importance of conservation,” she said. “They (Diana and the DOC team) were so impressed with the questions coming from five and six year olds.” Teachers Aoife O’Shaughnessy, Erin McPhail and

Anthea Kain have been report writing, creating artwork, and letter writing about the native bird with the children. “The children were so taken by it,” said Aoife. She said their awareness of the bird and its conservation has grown since they started learning about it.

“They just embraced it and the parents are hearing about a lot of it at home.” Local artist and parent of one pupil, Nic Dillon came along to sketch Wilson and do some drawing with the children. The classes are hoping to raise $500 to sponsor a falcon with aims to get the whole school involved.

Sadly Marlborough’s stunning summer months have passed and for many recreational boaties, now is the time to put the boat into hibernation for the winter. But before the boat is locked away there are a number of things to consider to ensure your boat is ready for the warmer months. In Havelock particularly, Sounds Shipwright Services Ltd and Havelock Slipway are your local specialists in all aspects of repairs, alterations, painting and general servicing of all types of vessels and trailers. Here are some tips and advice on how to get your boat prepared for next season. Trailer: Keeping your trailer up to Warrant of Fitness standard is important. Wheel bearings have often proved to be a major problem area and need to be regularly packed with marine grease. Quite often springs may look rusty but could still have a lot of meat left in the steel, so a good clean up is recommended otherwise replace them.
This will go for a lot of the bolts throughout your trailer as well and replacing them is not too hard if you do them one by one. Brake hubs over time can be damaged by salt water left on them, so make sure you have them checked. Modern multi-rollers don’t need much attention apart from a good wash down but if your trailer has keel rollers it might pay to have them greased and checked once a season. Boat electronics: If you happen to have indoor storage for your boat, your electronics should be well protected along with most other things in your boat. But if it’s parked outside it can be a very different story. Remove any electrical gadgets and store them in a warm, dry place inside. Also store lifejackets, flares, fishing tackle and anything portable inside to keep moisture out and prevent rust and rot. Invest in a quality waterproof boat cover.

Before putting your boat into storage for the winter, have it serviced and made ready for the warmer month.
Before pulling over the boat cover give all the electric connections a good coating of marine spray and, if you can, open up the area where the winch is mounted for ventilation. Give the boat a good scrub out, making sure all drain holes are working properly including the bungs. Once your boat has dried out properly after a good scrub, which should include squabs and canopy, put your cover on again and tie it down tight because winter will produce plenty of wet weather. Outboard motor: Of all your boat’s components, annual maintenance on your outboard motor should be the number one priority. If it breaks down you can’t just get out and walk home. If you think regular outboard servicing is overrated, try breaking down in late afternoon with a rising wind and your family onboard and you’ll be an instant convert. Visit your local boat repair and marine technician for a professional service. Some people believe they can service their smaller motors, but dealing with larger motors is a marine technician’s domain. When you have motors with onboard ECUs that record performance and error messages, these need to talk to designated laptops before servicing can take place. Safe boating does take a bit of input so don’t cut any corners and make sure your ‘investment’ is well looked after before going into storage. A good idea is to walk around your boat and make your own check list before visiting your local repairer and technician.
On water transportation With family and pride at the helm, Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd owners Peter and Jennie Johnson are a third generation family to continue on the Johnson family business. Johnson’s Barge Service Ltd specialises in a wide range of transportation on the water, from rubbish removal, transporting a septic tank truck, livestock, building materials, machinery and even household furniture. With an extensive list of services to offer, Peter and Jennie can service within the Pelorus Sounds and D’Urville Island areas and – if required all Nelson and Golden Bay areas.

Committee celebrates 10 years of brides
Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The Beavertown Blenheim Bride of the Year show is in its tenth year, and to celebrate its success the Sun talks to the committee that works hard to bring this fantastic event to Marlborough. “Our committee is made up of some very special and fantastic ladies who in the beginning never dreamed that the show would become so popular,” says Carol Taylor. “We have grown together, shared laughs, tears and many memories together and are proud of what the show has achieved. “It’s also hugely rewarding to be able to help local charities and to see their faces when we present them with a cheque,” she says.
In the beginning, the committee described the minutes leading up to the show as “nail biting”. “There was a lot of worrying and panicking up until the last minute, wondering if we would sell all the tickets or have enough brides entered. “But as the show’s popularity grew people began to plan ahead for the next shows,” Carol says. The support of the Marlborough community and local businesses has been the backbone of every successful show. “The community is amazing and the support from local businesses has been nothing short of remarkable. “Some sponsors have even been with us since day one,” Carol says.
Tickets limited Woodend Gardens The Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year is almost upon us, and with 27 brides entered this year’s show is set to be the biggest and best yet. This year’s show will be the 10th and is being held at the Marlborough Convention Centre on Saturday, July 7. Tickets are still on sale, though numbers are limited so any last minute ticket purchases must be made quickly. They are available from the Sun Office or by phoning Carol Taylor on 03 572 5323. Tickets include a complimentary drink and nibbles platter which are placed on the tables.

Winter health myths are common and although some are silly, some can actually be harmful, such as these: Myth: You can get the flu from a flu shot. The injected flu vaccine is made from a killed virus and the nasal flu vaccine (nasal spray) is made from a weakened live virus and cannot give a healthy person the flu. Myth: Extra vitamins and minerals will keep your kids from getting sick in the winter. Although some parents load their kids up with extra orange juice and vitamin C and other vitamins that claim to boost their immunity, they likely won’t keep your kids from catching colds and the flu during the winter. Myth: Kids can catch a cold from playing out in the cold weather, especially if you don’t wear a jacket or your child’s hair is wet. Colds and the flu are caused by viruses, not by being outside in the cold. Of course, if your child is playing outside with someone who is sick with a cold, then may very well get sick too. Being underdressed in cold weather still

Iron is a mineral found in some foods that our bodies need to work well. The body needs iron for our red blood cells to carry oxygen around our bodies and for proteins in our muscles. Iron is also needed for many other roles including our immune system. Our bodies need the right amount of iron and low iron or iron deficiency anaemia is a common problem. In New Zealand the groups most at risk of low iron are children, menstruating women, pregnant or breast-feeding women and older adults. Causes of low iron levels include blood loss, poor diet, or a problem with your gut not absorbing enough iron from foods you eat. If you do not have enough iron in your body you may: • Feel tired • Find it hard to think and concentrate • Find it harder to learn • Be more at risk of infections and illnesses

isn’t a good idea, though. Myth: You can’t get a sunburn during the winter. Although the sun’s rays might not be as strong in the winter as they are in the summer, they can still cause sunburn, especially when they reflect off snow, so be sure to use sunscreen year-round. Myth: Your kids can stop their allergy medicines during the winter. Not all kids have seasonal allergies that are only triggered during spring or autumn. Some kids have year-round allergies, even during the winter. These children, who may be allergic to dust mites, mold, or pet dander, etc., would likely do well to continue taking their allergy medicines during the winter. Myth: Kids need an antibiotic every time they have a runny nose, especially once the discharge is green or yellow. This is perhaps one of the more dangerous winter health myths, as it can lead to the overuse of antibiotics, which aren’t needed for most runny noses, as they are often caused by colds and other viruses.

• Feel the cold more than others. What foods have Iron? The best food sources of iron are: • Beef & lamb • Chicken, fish and seafood Other foods with iron are: • Porridge, Weetbix and wholegrain breads • Vegetables • Eggs • Chickpeas, beans, lentils and some nuts To help your body absorb the iron in your foods eat foods high in vitamin C at meal times such as oranges, orange juice, kiwi fruit, tomatoes and broccoli.

Queer Straight Alliance youth group members Stella Machado, Kayla Chergui, Greg Strawbridge and Luis Francia.
Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk There is a proud group of Marlborough secondary students who are coming forward loud and proud with one simple message. “Our group does not tolerate homophobia and bullying!” This group is called Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) and the orientation of its members is of no concern. The group is made up of students from all three Marlborough colleges who aim to provide a safe and non judgmental envi-
ronment for youth to socialise and enjoy a range of fun activities. Supporting QSA is Family Planning health promoter Michelle Dawson. “We don’t care what orientation you are, if you want to hang out with other youth who accept and respect one another, then you are welcome to join,” she says. QSA member Kayla Chergui says bullying plays a big role in many schools. “Bullying stops people from being who they want to be,”
she says. The youth will run the group, there are no membership fees and activities will be decided by members. Some of the activities may include learning salsa, ten pin bowling, knitting, once a term travelling to Nelson to visit their QSA group and social cricket to name a few. Meetings will be every fourth Thursday of the month, the next being Thursday, June 28. Enquiries can be made to Michelle at 578 3047 ext 3 or 0272807737.

By Robbie Parkes Running the Great Wall of China half marathon exceeded expectations. Blenheim woman Shelley Lines travelled to China last month to compete in the race with her sister, daughter and her daughter’s partner ran the 5km race. Shelley finished the half marathon very happily in three hours and 38 minutes. “It was fantastic.” Another surprise was also in waiting. Her daughter’s partner proposed during the race. “I had no idea until that evening.” “It was a double celebration.” They spent about three weeks in China, followed by a 10-day cycling tour in Vietnam and five days in Singapore. Everything went smoothly, bookings were all in order and their tour guides were great. They were given a few orientation days
before the race to become familiar with the terrain. Shelley said the magnitude of the structure was mindblowing and to stand on it was surreal. “It was like being on top of the world.” “It just blows you away.” The marathon ended with an awards night at the Beijing Hotel, which Shelley likened to walking into a palace. Following the race, they took the opportunity to go sightseeing. They saw the Terracotta Warriors in Xian, spent a day at the Panda Research Centre in Chengdu and took a four day cruise on the Yangtze River. Shelley said the trip was just a five year dream of hers. Her next big race with her sister will be in Raratonga next year, but with a few local runs in between.
tAll Ferns lose opener The Tall Ferns have suffered a loss in their opening Olympic basketball qualifying match against the Czech Republic in Turkey. The women’s basketball game drew a score of 70-51 to the European team, with the New Zealanders trailing 44-25 at half time.

The second round of the BikeFit Marlborough Winter Duathlon Series took place on Sunday at the Wither Hills Farm circuit. Start times were staggered, handicapped on previous performances. The long event was run over a course of 5km run, 20 km bike and 5 km run. Bob Tate in his first duathlon was first across the line, in a time of 1.33.14. Local Coast to Coaster Josh Scott recorded a personal time of 1.11.45, and top finishers in the women’s section were Christine Dew and Rachel Monk. Two local youngsters, Fergus Greer and Will Hart, also put in notable fantastic efforts. The medium duathlon was run over distances of 2.5km run, 16 km ride and 2.5 km run. Anton Horton won this, 58.28, followed by Connor Guillemot, 1.02.01. In the women’s class, notable finishers were Jo Capill and Mel Jones, and Sharon de Castro. The short course event was a 2.5 km run followed by an 8km bike and ended with a 1 km run. Finn Southey did enough to finish first in time of 44.13 from Stephanie Southey, 44.20. The next event is scheduled for 22 July with course details to be advised.

Restored wonders hit the skies By Robbie Parkes The Yak-3 Russian fighter and a variety of other restored aviation wonders were enjoyed by many families at the Omaka Wings and Wheels day on Saturday. Pilot Graeme Frew came down from Auckland with his newly restored fighter to give it a spin in Marlborough airspace. Jim and David Lochead also
brought out their recently completed 1913 Morane-Saulnier G replica for its first public outing. The father and son team spent 16 months building the old-timey plane for the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. The plane will eventually be hung in the foyer of the building. Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre CEO Jane Orphan said it was
great to get the Yak-3 down in Marlborough for the weekend, and the day really turned out well. “The weather’s helped out a lot, it’s been fabulous.” “It was a bit of a risk to do it mid-winter.” Jane said the turnout was great this year and the day itself was a really good excuse for pilots to hit the skies with their pride and joy.
