Hiss-terical tale

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander What does a cat, a pile of coal, and an old couple have in common? Nothing you might think, but they combine to create an unusual tale written and illustrated by two childhood friends, Karen Bull and Gwen Blackadder.

Tilly’s tale first illustration

Best wishes for the New Year Publishers Les and Katrina Whiteside and the staff of the Blenheim Sun wish all our readers and advertisers the very best for 2017. We thank you for your support in 2016, and look forward to working with you, covering the best of Marlborough, again next year. The Blenheim Sun office re-opens at 8.30am on Monday January 9, 2017.

Continued from page 1 Karen and Gwen grew up together in Reefton and have remained close friends to this day. Karen now lives in Blenheim with her husband and three children and works as a graphic designer. Gwen approached Karen to illustrate a book she wanted to write based on her cat called Tilly. Not having illustrated a book before and wanting to help out her friend, Karen got to work with pencil and paper and now two years later the

book has been published. “It might have taken less time if I wasn’t juggling work and family,” Karen laughs. “It’s been a fun project and I had a sentimental connection to it. I really wanted to help Gwen realise her goal of putting this book together so it’s neat to see it finished.” Karen came up with a style of illustration that suited Gwen and her cat Tilly, created drawings then scanned them and manipulated them in Photoshop.

The book, Tilly Tat and Black Cat, was finally published on December 16 and is being sold privately via a social media page. It tells the tale of two adventure prone cats, Tilly and a black cat she meets at a coal yard, taking an unexpected trip of a lifetime and meeting unlikely allies along the way. “It’s written in the style of a yarn, quite comical and in the language that Gwen speaks. I’ve read it to my kids and they love it,” Karen says.

The Department of Conservation produced a video about scenic spots on the route from Picton to Christchurch, featuring actor Cohen Holloway.

Take a pit stop in nature Spots on road between Picton and Christchurch promoted by DOC Stop and enjoy some of the great spots in nature on the long drive between Picton and Christchurch this summer, the Department of Conservation says. Picnic by a lake, take a forest walk, marvel at a waterfall or pitch a tent for the night in a DOC campground. These are some of the options for taking a break in the conservation areas travellers will drive by on this seven and a half-hour alternative route.

DOC has launched a campaign to highlight places to visit between Picton and Christchurch, with a new online map and brochure (www.doc. govt.nz/pictontochch), and fun video featuring ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ actor Cohen Holloway. DOC Operations Director for the Northern South Island, Roy Grose, says DOC wants travellers to be aware of conservation sites on the route to encourage people to stop and take a break.

“This will be a new route for some and a long drive for all so we’d love it if people stopped and discovered some of the DOC scenic spots and facilities along the way. “We want travellers to have a safe trip and to consider taking a break in nature to refresh and relax on their journey,” Roy says. The route traverses state highways 63, 6 and 7 and passes through several conservation areas, including Nelson Lakes National Park, Victoria Forest

Park, Lake Sumner Forest Park and Hanmer Conservation Park. DOC is working alongside the New Zealand Transport Agency and other tourism organisations to promote safe travelling on the Picton to Christchurch route. State Highway 1 between Picton and Kaikoura is closed due to massive slips triggered by the severe earthquake in November which affected the North Canterbury and Kaikoura area.

Voices tuned for country music awards By Celeste Alexander The build up to the Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards is starting to get exciting and organisers are encouraging people to get their tickets early. This year’s event will be held at the ASB Theatre for the first time and will see a new stage setup for the performers. Around 200 entries have been received for the awards from people aged four through to 81-years of age. This number is only slightly less that the 2016 awards convenor Carolyn Coles-Ross says. “We have people coming from as far as Auckland and Invercargill which is really pleasing to see. We are all looking forward to a great weekend of country singing,” she says. The senior overall winner from the 2016 awards, Toni Biddle will return to perform. It’s been a busy few months for Toni after being elected to the Invercargill City Council but she is looking forward to taking to the stage again. The awards will lead in with some fun on Friday, January 20 with a ‘Showcase’ event

Wither Hills fire danger The Wither Hills Farm Park is a popular recreational walking area but people are reminded to stay safe during the holidays. Anyone going onto the Wither Hills Farm Park should be aware of the potential danger from fire. Particular care is advised during hot, windy weather. In these conditions, users are advised to use only the lower Forest Hills or Rotary Lookout walking tracks. Early mornings and evenings are the safest times for walking during hot, dry weather.

kicking off at 7.30pm. Some of the judges will be performing as well as Always at Heart, who was the overall winner from 2015. Allan Barron will also be one of the acts as well as Peter Cairns, former Gold Guitar winner and rhythm guitarist for the whole of the awards weekend. Saturday will see the awards auditions underway from 8.30am and carrying on through to Sunday till 3pm. The Rock’n Roll Singing Competitions is back again by popular demand and will be held on the Saturday night. Finally, the event everyone will be waiting for... the finals concert will be held Sunday night at the theatre from 6.45pm. Who will be the winner? “You will just have to come along for the auditions and final concert to find out,” Carolyn says. Tickets for the auditions cost $5 each, and entry into the final concert cost $27 for adults, $25 for senior citizens, and children under 15-years are free. Tickets are available now from the ASB theatre or Ticketdirect.

GP: Your GP is your health home and the professional you should see for most health issues. Make an appointment early, especially for foreseeable visits, such as a need to renew a prescription. Visitors should ring a GP clinic and ask which General Practice is the duty doctor for visitors that day. GP phone numbers are listed at www.marlboroughpho.org. Most GP clinics have some appointments free for acute cases each day, but at busy times you may have to wait a day or two to be seen for a non-urgent matter. You can register for ACC at your GP. A GP can treat strains, sprains and many other injuries and can refer you for an x-ray if needed. Marlborough After-Hours GPs: For urgent after-hours medical care that can’t wait until your GP is open the next working day, the after-hours clinic is in the hospital grounds off Hospital Rd, Blenheim. The after-hours clinic is open from 6pm to 10pm on weekdays and 8am to 10pm on weekends and public holidays. A visit to the after-hours costs more than a visit to your usual GP, but is free for children under six and subsidised if it is an ACC matter. Phone 03 520 6377. Pharmacies: Pharmacists offer a range

of services beyond filling your prescription. Pharmacies can also provide first aid, urinary tract medication, conjunctivitis and the emergency contraception pill (which is free for New Zealand Residents) among other services. Conditions do apply for these services. Please consult with your pharmacist. Pharmacy hours are listed on the Marlborough Primary Health website www.pho Dentist: For acute dental needs at the weekend, ring your dental clinic to hear on the voice mail who is on duty, or call the hospital on 03 520 9999 and ask who is on duty. Wairau Hospital Emergency Department: The Emergency Department (ED) is for emergencies. It’s best for the patient and for the community if we all keep the ED for emergency cases. Summer holidays can be very busy in the ED so only go there if you really need to be there. If you go to the ED with a condition that is not an emergency you will be helped to make an appointment with a GP or asked to see the urgent after-hours GP. However, if it is an emergency don’t delay, that’s what the ED is there for.

Jeff Fulton Vines Village

Juliet Partington Watery Mouth

I will be home with family. My hopes for the business in the New Year will be to carry on the way we are as things are going well, and maybe I could fit a holiday in.

We will have familiy time over Christmas then it’s business as usual for New Years. I’m looking forward to another great year, if not better.

I’m heading away camping and down the sounds with my husband and four kids. It’s family time for us. For 2017 we’re just going to keep making the best wood fire pizza in Blenheim.

I’ll be around the Vines Village as it is our busiest time of year. If possible I might pop out to the Sounds for a night or two. Merry Christmas everyone and travel safe.

I have no plans for the New Year, although I’m looking forward to the UB40 concert. For the cafe, I’m planning on entering more awards.

Norm Fowke Glass Theatre safety Dear Ed, Now that the council have completed the pedestrian crossings on the re-aligned Hutcheson Street to facilitate safe passage to the theatre, now is the time to address the real problem. Patrons exiting the theatre, no doubt talking about what they have just seen, step directly into the path of any vehicles entering the carpark after rounding a blind lefthand turn from Hutcheson Street. The small traffic island place in the entrance to the carpark is of little use, it is too small, traffic is still trying to turn right when exiting the carpark. Erecting a no right turn sign is of little use, as shown by the vehicular traffic that still turn left into the carpark from Russell Terrace, completely ignoring the no entry sign. Who will monitor and police the reduced speed limit now imposed, and the correct use of the entry and exits to the carpark? Kiwi Blenheim

High school thoughts Dear Ed, This nonsense about needing to have a new school is not necessary. The existing schools have been in the right place for many years now, with their supporting facilities conveniently placed around them. I would think that the “instruction” to build a new school in a remote corner of town comes from a faceless

guru in the Education Department, who is thinking more of scoring Brownie Points than making the right decisions. Both schools could be made co–ed if required. No problem there. The argument that the remodelling of the buildings can not take place while school is on is not valid. I have seen exactly this happen with King’s High

School in Dunedin, with only short-term inconvenience involved. Why is the town putting up with this situation? The Mayor should be leading the protest movement, to show the Government that the town will not put up with bullying, and will insist on having what it clearly wants and needs. Alan Blenheim

Communication needed on new speed limit Dear Ed, The new speedlimit from Blenheim to Renwick along Middle Renwick Road caught me by surprise.

I didn’t read anything about the new signs going up. I’m just glad the Police are being lenient and not pulling over the speeding motorists

who are used to driving at 100km. More com mun ication please! Anne. M

A look back in time Jean Leslie celebrated her 99th birthday by having afternoon tea at ‘Woodside’ the Tuamarina luxury bed and breakfast provider in the villa built by her grandfather, where she grew up. She tells reporter Cathie Bell some of her stories. Just inside the main door of ‘Woodside’, is the hallway and a steep staircase up to the first floor. Jean Leslie points to the third step, a slightly larger one as the staircase turns there. “That’s it, that’s the courting step.” She and her husband Arnold sat there, looking out the front door at the view, when they were courting, before they got married. “You couldn’t smooch in front of Mum and Dad. So we did our courting on the stairs, looking out the door. If they asked what we were doing, we said ‘looking at the view’.” ‘Woodside’ is a villa built in 1876 from heart rimu. Now a bed and breakfast accommodation provider owned and run by Nanette and Steve Kirk, Jean was brought out last Thursday to have afternoon tea to celebrate her 99th birthday. The house was built by her grandfather, John Burroughs, who selected every board personally from heart rimu milled at the Big Bush pit sawmill in Grovetown. family say. Jean, nee Edna-Jean Burroughs, lived in the house from when she was born until she got married, and she returned to the family home for about five years while her dairy farmer husband was at the war, with their oldest child, son Albyn. “The bad news telegram was delivered by hand by the postman, so every morning you’d look out for him to see what way he was going to go… it was a terrible time.” When Jean and Arnold were first married, they moved to Okaramio, to his family’s place. But after he returned from the war, they moved to Kaikoura. Jean’s family – two boys and two girls –

organised an afternoon tea at ‘Woodside’ last week to give her an opportunity to look at her old house again, and to re-live memories, telling the stories of family life again. While the outside of the house was very similar, the inside has changed, with the downstairs floor being opened up. “There’s quite a change here… it’s still lovely.” She was pleased Nanette and Steve have kept the ‘Woodside’ name. “I hadn’t heard anything about the house since the earthquake, I wondered how it was standing up.” Nanette is pleased to report the house

stood up well to the 7.8 shake last month, although the first storey had rocked significantly. “It stood up beautifully… it was well built.” Jean says it has weathered several earthquakes, and in the Murchison earthquake of 1968, the only damage was one chimney falling down.

Bites, hydration and injuries Tips for staying safe these summer holidays

Who to call for help Which healthcare free call numbers are available in New Zealand when you need advice? Do you know there are trained professionals available to take your health questions over the phone at any time of day at no cost to you? Healthline: Phone 0800 611 116 from either a landline or a mobile phone for free, confidential health advice from registered nurses who can advise you on the best thing to do and how urgently you should do it. Depending on your health issue, this could be advice to see your GP or visit the emergency department immediately, or to see your GP within 24 hours. Up to 40 percent of callers are given information to safely manage the condition themselves at home, including things to try, and advice on what to watch out for. A small percentage of callers are put through to 111. Healthline nurses can also direct you to the nearest GP clinic or after-hours pharmacist. Plunketline: Call 0800 933 922 to talk to a Plunket Nurse any time of day or night for free help and advice about children’s health. Plunket Nurses are registered nurses with additional qualifications in well-child health. There are also nurses who can speak other languages available. You don’t have to be registered with Plunket to use PlunketLine services. Earthquake Support Line: The helpline 0800 777 846 is available any time of day for

people are who anxious or concerned after the quakes. The Earthquake Support Line is staffed with qualified mental health experts. For other health concerns after the quakes call your GP or call Healthline on 0800 611 116. In an emergency call 111. There is also a Government Earthquake Helpline set up to deal with enquiries about financial support or assistance in the aftermath of the quakes. You can call 0800 779 997 from 8am to 6pm Mon-Fri to find out what financial support or assistance may be available. The National Poison Centre: Call 0800 POISON (0800 764 766) if you think someone has ingested poison. However, if the person is unconscious or have difficulty breathing, ring 111; In all other poisoning situations call the National Poisons Centre. If a child is upset or crying, have someone else take care of them if possible so you can focus on the phone call. A poison information officer will ask you some questions before they can give you advice. They will tell you what kind of first aid is needed and whether or not the patient needs to see a doctor. Bring the product container to the phone, so you can provide any information asked by the poison information officer. In an Emergency: Phone 111 in an emergency.

As part of a summer series focusing on health and well being, we asked Marlborough Primary Health for tips on staying safe and healthy this summer. Sun smart Stay out of the sun between 10am and 4pm, and cover up, wear a hat, long sleeves and sunnies and remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours and after being in the water. Remember you can get sun burnt on a cloudy day. Food safety Campylobacter is New Zealand’s No.1 food poisoning disease. The four Cs of food safety are: Clean, Cook, Cover, and Chill. This means washing and drying hands thoroughly, ensuring meats are thoroughly cooked, not using the same plates to prepare or carry raw and cooked food, and making sure prepared food or leftovers are kept in cool storage, he said. Go easy on alcohol Remember to drink water alongside alcohol, as general rule have one glass of water for every glass of alcohol. Drive safe Drive safely, take rests when you need them. Designate a sober driver. Talk with those of drinking age in your family about their plans for staying safe this summer. Hydration Stay hydrated and encourage children and elderly to drink often. Water is best. If the kids are getting grizzly and tired it

could be dehydration and a glass of water can make them a lot happier. Safe sex The emergency contraception pill is now free and available from pharmacies in the top of the south to New Zealand citizen with some conditions. It’s best to use condoms in the first place to protect against STDs and unwanted pregnancy, but great to have this back up available. Cuts and grazes Cuts and grazes need to be washed carefully to ensure that all foreign bodies, such as gravel, are removed. Most of the time you can treat wounds at home, but if they need to be closed (with stitches, for example) you’ll need to see a GP or practice nurse. Ring your GP practice nurse or Healthline or talk to a pharmacist for advice if you’re not sure what to do. Bites Bites can make children (and adults) miserable. Use insect repellant and cover up if in infested areas, and talk to a pharmacist about cream to alleviate the itch. First aid kit Check the contents and use-by dates of items in your first aid kit, and don’t forget to pack it if you’re going away, especially if you’re off to a remote bach or camping. Before you give a child medicine, always check the correct dose for the child’s age, and if the child is old enough to have it.

SENA: Tony and Jo are thrilled to announce the arrival of their first baby boy, Liam Kodhel (3.68kg) at 10.36pm on December 18, 2016 at Wairau Hospital. Special thanks to Cathy Middleton and all our family and friends for all the support.

Safe sleep message Wairau Hospital’s maternity ward was brightly decorated with Christmas decorations in the lead up to Christmas, including a ‘kiwiana’ theme (pictured).

HEGGLUN: Greg, Rochelle and big sisters Keira and Neive are excited to announce the arrival of a baby boy, Kye James (9lb 4oz) at 10.15pm on December 11, 2016 at Wairau Hospital. Special thanks to Cathy Middleton for her support and the staff at the maternity ward. Photo provided.

Maternity staff would also like to remind people of the ‘Safe Sleep’ message for their babies and children when travelling away for the holidays. Here are some tips. Car seats or capsules protect your baby when travelling in the car. Don’t use them as a cot or bassinet. Car seats and capsules are not safe for your baby to sleep in when you are at home or at your destination. If you are out somewhere, make sure your baby has a safe place to sleep. Take your wahakura, pēpi-pod®, portacot or bassinet with you, and use it on a flat surface. Tilting the sleep device may cause your baby to roll and suffocate.

The Sun office will be closing for two weeks over the Christmas period and will not be doing maternity visits during this time. Make sure baby is in their own bed for every sleep (and close to parents/caregivers at night). Where to go for more information Speak to your midwife, Well Child Tamariki Ora nurse, doctor or practice nurse. Ring PlunketLine on 0800 933 922.

Re-live Middle-earth via kayak December 11 marked the 15th anniversary since New Zealand first featured as Middleearth in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. People are encouraged to celebrate by exploring Marlborough, one of the brilliant film locations. Sir Peter Jackson, writer and producer of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit Trilogy chose Pelorus Bridge as a filming location for scenes from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The dwarves were filmed floating in barrels down the river - which Peter Jackson loved. “We are finally going to put our dwarves in barrels, it looks like fun, I would do it myself if I wasn’t so busy doing other things.”

Stephen Hunter, who played dwarf Bombur, called the experience ‘his favourite day on set’. A similar experience is also available for visitors, where barrels are swapped for inflatable tandem kayaks. This guided kayak tour Pelorus Eco Adventures include stops at waterfalls and rock pools of the enchanting river, streams and the filming location itself. Along the way you may see several species of native bird including the large native pigeon (kereru), bellbirds, tui and fantails. The area is also rich in lush native forest. RIGHT: Explore Pelorus by kayaking one of the filming locations for scenes from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Social media may invite burglars into your home

Social media may jeopardise the family’s home security, so security experts are warning parents to be vigilent of what their children post online these holidays.

According to Ben Clement from ADT Security, one of the most surprising outcomes from the 2016 ADT Secure Homes Report was the number of parents who don’t regularly check their children’s social media sites. “Of the parents who participated in our survey, 77 per cent stated they have not personally reviewed the privacy settings of their children’s social media accounts in the past 12 months and 54 per cent had rarely or never discussed the risks social media posts can have on their home security with their children,” he says. “Anyone responsible for children and teens using social media should check the type of content they are sharing to avoid sensitive information becoming publicly available.

Parents are being encouraged to be vigilant about what their children post on social media over the holidays. During the school holidays, many children will turn to social media to keep in touch with their friends over the summer break. Yet for parents, keeping track of what their children are posting on social media, including images of new gifts or checking-in from holiday destinations, can be challenging but fewer still may realise how it may jeopardise the family’s home security. According to research commissioned by ADT Security, which surveyed 1,013 New Zealanders, 28 per cent of respondents with children aged 6-20 years use between 2-5 social media platforms.

A lack of social media awareness is risky and can potentially lead to a break-in at the family home.” Sensitive content that parents should be mindful of include posting one’s whereabouts using photographs or check-in tools, photos of the home, new gifts and valuable items, sharing travel plans and holiday snaps, and photos of things like as concert tickets or a new driver’s license. “Remember, social posts have a long digital footprint and regular routines can be easily identified when sharing specific locations at recurrent times. While every home in every neighbourhood can be a target for thieves, social media is becoming an increasingly common tool to gain insights into homes,” Ben says.

Navy women spend Christmas Sport inbrief cycling NZ to help boy Three Royal New Zealand Navy women are spending their Christmas break cycling the length of New Zealand to raise money to help Oscar, a Wellington boy with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. The women arrived in Picton last Friday and left the following day for St Arnaud. “We are just three girls that decided to jump on board and help Oscar on his journey to becoming a normal Kiwi kid and we wanted to help,” Leading Medic Caitlin Williams says. The women decided they would raise awareness by cycling the length of New

Zealand over their Christmas break. They began the journey at Cape Reinga on 11 December and are scheduled to arrive in Bluff on January 3. They hope to raise $10,000 to contribute to the $100,000 cost of the surgery.

Lifejackets save lives Nearly half the number of lifejackets used by recreational boaties are sold in the few weeks before Christmas, Maritime NZ says. Education and communications manager Pania Shingleton says wearing your lifejacket is the most important thing boaties can do to keep themselves safer on the water. “Our tragic statistic is that about two-thirds of recreational boating deaths could be prevented by taking the simple step of wearing a lifejacket. “New Zealand is a nation of boaties. It seems about one-third to half of our population takes to the water in 1 million recreational craft,” Ms Shingleton said. “Those big numbers, and we know they are increasing, mean boat safety is really important and by law every

boat has a skipper, and the skipper is in charge.” Maritime NZ is making buying lifejackets easier this year. It has provided $75,000 for Coastguard to run the “Old4New” lifejacket upgrade programme sponsored by

Hutchwilco. If you’re the ‘skipper’ taking friends or family out on the water, take two waterproof ways to call for help, check the marine weather forecast, avoid alcohol and, above all, make sure everyone wears a lifejacket.

The Queen Charlotte Track, one of NZ’s iconic walks and a Great Ride for mountain bikers is a major beneficiary of the latest round of grants for cycle routes announced by central government from its Maintaining the Quality of Great Rides Fund. Queen Charlotte Track Inc will receive $255,000, the

largest of nine grants. The funds, matched by a grant from the local Council will be used to reroute 6.4km of the Queen Charlotte Track between the historic Ship Cove (Captain Cook’s favourite landing site) and Schoolhouse Bay campsite to bring the track up to Grade three cycle trail/easy tramping track standard.
