No stores visited in Blenheim By Chris Tobin No stores were visited in Marlborough over Easter Weekend by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. “We will not be prosecuting any Marlborough businesses for breaching the Shop Trading Hours Repeal Act,” a spokesperson for the ministry, Alastair Stewart said. One supermarket, New World Blenheim, opened for trading on Sunday while others remained closed. Nationally the ministry said it was considering two stores that were found to be open and trading on Good Friday. The two stores, both garden stores, were in Auckland and Christchurch. “The ministry will also be warning stores that are alleged to have been open and trading on Good Friday or Easter Sunday based on 46 complaints from the public,” Mr Stewart said. “We are issuing warnings, as these stores have not previously been warned or prosecuted.” A total of 30 complaints were received by the ministry concerning Good Friday and 16 for Easter Sunday.

Shellfish ban in Port Underwood The public has now been banned from taking shellfish from Port Underwood in the Marlborough Sounds, due to the presence of a toxin which may cause Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP). Nelson Marlborough Medical Officer of Health Dr Ed Kiddle made the announcement last Friday, after routine testing of shellfish in the area discovered Toxic Algal Bloom.
The area affected is all of inner Port Underwood, and Dr Kiddle advised people not to eat kina, mussels, pipi, tuatua, oysters or cockles harvested from affected areas since March 22, 2013. “Scallops, paua, crab, and crayfish may still be eaten if the gut was completely removed prior to cooking. If the gut was not removed its contents could contaminate the meat during the
cooking process,” he said adding that cooking affected shellfish would not remove the toxin. Symptoms of the toxin were gut symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, and usually occur within 1 hour or so, but up to 12 hours after eating shellfish, and are of short duration, Dr Kiddle said. Continued monitoring of the situation
is planned, but in the meantime people should not take shellfish from this area. The ban comes after another ban in the Queen Charlotte Sound, due to a toxin which had the potential to cause Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP). People who want more information about the safety of shellfish in their possession should contact the On Call Health Protection Officer on (03) 520 9999 Blenheim or (03) 546 1800 Nelson.
Man charged after Picton home invasion A 25 year old Blenheim man is in custody following an incident in Picton in which two 16 year old girls were allegedly sexually assaulted in a home invasion. Police say the man drove to the address about 3.45am on Sunday and entered a bedroom the girls
were sharing. He allegedly sexually assaulted both girls before their caregivers were alerted by the girls’ yelling. The male caregiver managed to get the offender out of the house and was able to restrain him for some time before he broke free.
The female caregiver had called police and the pair were able to get registration of the offender’s vehicle as he left. The man was located by police driving the vehicle in Picton shortly after and arrested. He appeared in Blenheim District
Court on Monday charged with burglary, performing an indecent act on a girl aged 12-16, driving while disqualified and driving with excess breath alcohol. His name was suppressed. He was remanded in custody to reappear next Monday.

Toppled crane takes down power lines A crane toppled over as it tried to remove a tree from a Blenheim house yesterday, taking out power lines and landing on the property. An Allied Work Force worker at the scene said Marlborough Lines staff had been lifting bundles of palm fronds from the property on the corner of Hutcheson and Lansdowne Streets, over the power lines and on to a truck and trailer. The worker said the staff then cut off the top of the tree, causing the crane to overbalance, coming down
on power lines, breaking the poles and landing on the adjoining house. “Now we have damaged poles, damaged house and a crane tipped over,” he said. He said the woman in the house had been home with her family at the time, and it had given them a fright. The power supply had already been cut to the Mayfield area, while the work was being done. A witness said two more cranes arrived yesterday afternoon to right the toppled crane.

Another Lotto win Two weeks ago a $10.8 million winning Lotto prize came to Blenheim and last Saturday some lucky person struck $50,000 in a Lotto Easter promotion. The ticket was sold at New World Blenheim and was one of 100 extra prizes available for Triple Dip tickets bought between March 17 and 30.

Chch-Picton service cut for winter Monday’s announcement that KiwiRail will suspend its Christchurch-Picton passenger service, the TranzCoastal, over the winter months is shortsighted and misguided, says the Rail and Maritime Transport Union (RMTU). “Since the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2012 KiwiRail’s Christchurch based passenger services have suffered a decline in customer numbers, but this summer has seen the reversal of that trend, and it does not make sense to stop running this train over the winter,’ said RMTU general secretary Wayne Butson. “To suspend the service over the winter months is short-sighted, it sends a signal to tourism operators overseas that our own Government lacks faith in the rebuild of Christchurch and the resurgence in tourism in the South Island and beyond’, he said. KiwiRail announced that the Coastal Pacific would operate in the seven months between October and April. “The Coastal Pacific is losing almost $3 million annually, due in most part to a
Statistics show this year has been one of the sunniest on record so far in Blenheim. Only one year (in 1978) has had a sunnier first three months in the previous 83 years according to records kept by the Blenheim Meteorological station at Grovetown Park. The total sunshine for the first three months of 2013 is 837.2 hours, well above the long term average of 706 hours. In 1978 the total was 842.4 hours.

Classic Fighters 2013 ‘the best ever’
Some of the big crowd taking in the action on Saturday. Photo: Rob Duff
Continued from page 1 Classic Fighters Airshow chairman, Graham Orphan was extremely happy with the way the weekend went. “[It was] the best ever. We had a fantastic audience…and we had a safe and entertaining flying weekend…I could not be happier,” he said. General admission ticket presales were also up three times the previous levels, which indicated that more people had planned in advance to attend the biennial show. 100 aircraft participated in
the flying programme, with 29 aircraft flying in formation in the finale, something that has not been seen in recent decades. The airshow proved a success for food retailers at the show as well. Picton-based, Poppa Col baked potatoes owner Colin Milthorpe, who works at most of the big air shows in New Zealand, said business had been up 25%. “This would have to be one of the best shows in the country for our business, and the set up of the food area was just right.” Food retailers travelled from as
far as Auckland and Invercargill to be at the event, while photographers came from all over the world. Australian based aircraft photographer, John Freeman, said Classic Fighters was one of the best photographic settings in the world for classic aircraft. “I appreciate the access I get here and the great treatment. That is why I love coming to this show, that and the amazing aircraft, lighting and venue. If I could only go to one Airshow, Classic Fighters would be my choice,” Mr Freeman said.

Private jet rides for public While many Marlburians were content to watch dozens of vintage warbirds take to the sky at the Classic Fighters airshow over Easter, others opted to take to the skies themselves by flying in a classic aircraft from the 1960s. Milton and Anne Neal, of Marlborough, were two of the first to take a ride in the Czechbuilt L-29 Delfin jet trainer, which was operating from Blenheim Airport this weekend, at a cost of $2500. Run by Soviet Star Jet Experience from Christchurch, the aircraft is operated under the CAAs Part 115 rules which allow for adventure aviation activities, and which means
members of the public can now experience the thrill of high speed jet aircraft flight. During the 1960s and 1970s over two thousand L-29s saw service as primary jet training aircraft for the fighter pilots of the Soviet and Czech Air Forces, and while some are still in active military service today, many are now flying as civilian warbirds all around the world. Soviet Star’s aircraft is one of three currently flying in New Zealand. Chief Pilot Ian Griggs noted that each flight can be tailored to the wishes of the passenger so Anne opted for a relatively leisurely flight up the Wairau
Valley while Milton followed that with a more energetic sortie over the Marlborough Sounds. Both also had the chance to take the controls of the aircraft for a brief period during the flight so that they could experience the true sensation of piloting a jet fighter as speeds of up to 600 km/hour. After the flights Anne said “that was great I could have stayed up there all day” and when Milton’s smile faded a little he was able to add that the ride was “fantastic”. Anyone wanting to experience the thrill of being a jet fighter jock for half an hour can contact Soviet Star at www. sovietstar.co.nz.
Man recovering in hospital The man who was seriously burned after a gas canister exploded in Blenheim on Friday night is recovering in the Hutt Hospital plastics ward. The man, aged 52 is believed to be from Nelson and was a
member of the re-enactment team at the Classic Fighters airshow, at Omaka. He suffered burns to his face, upper body, arms and legs after the gas canister on a portable cooker exploded at the show on
Friday night. A 34-year-old man and a 46-yearold woman were also injured in the explosion and were treated for burns to their faces and necks before being discharged from Wairau Hospital later that night.

Marlborough FYD has big plans Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) Marlborough is looking to introduce a values and life skills programme to primary school kids in the region and are looking for support from local business to help make this happen. Nationally, over 18,000 kids are involved in FYD programmes, which include Kiwi Can, Stars, and Project K, all aimed at improving the lives of young New Zealanders. Marlborough has had Project K since 2008, and FYD regional manager Kelvin Watt, said they had plans to develop further in the region. “We’ve got some ambitious plans for the future where we want to positively impact a greater number of young people and make more of a difference within Marlborough. The plans come after an Infometrics report on the organisation, , revealed that for every dollar invested in FYD programmes, there was an average return to the national economy of $7.15. “It’s great to be able to show that our programmes work. That they benefit young people and provide a real return to the economy. Within Marlborough, we want to intro-

Kiwi Can is delivered by trained FYD staff, who provide interactive lessons covering positive relationships, integrity, resilience and respect over a full school year. “Let’s get it here and let’s get it up and running.” Mr Watt said. Blenheim ballroom Police competition to stay inbrief
By Kat Duggan Blenheim/Nelson Ballroom Dance Studio hosted a ballroom dancing competition in Blenheim on the weekend. The Easter Ballroom Dancing Marlborough Experience drew about 80 individual dancers from around the country, including from Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington, Hamilton and Blenheim to the St Christopher’s Church Hall in Redwoodtown on Saturday. Gaile French, who runs the Blenheim /Nelson Ballroom Dance Studio, and organised the event said she was happy with the second annual Blenheim competition. “It was brilliant, a wonderful competition, everyone there competitive-wise really enjoyed it,” she said. Mrs French said while the competition did not have an over all winner as such, there was a great calibre of dancing, and everyone got a thank-you prize who took part.

Margaret and Evan Teale at the ballroom dancing competition.
“The support from small businesses in Blenheim who put together the gifts was amazing.” The Blenheim competition started last year, and Mrs French said it was definitely going to become an annual event, with some competitors already booked into
accommodation next year. She has been coming over to Blenheim from Nelson for the past 21 years on Thursday’s to teach ballroom dancing here, and she is encouraging people to join. Anybody interested could contact her on 03 545 0772.

They do not charge members to receive a RNZFB guide dog, all costs for breeding and training are met by public donations, sponsorship and legacies. This is why your donations are important, they help to maintain this life-changing service. Guide dogs are taught to guide people around hazards, negotiate traffic, locate common destinations and travel on public trans-

I will shop at Pak’nSave depending on the specials, but I usually go to New World.
I will be staying in town, I’m yet to check out Pak’nSave but I think you could save gas by going to the closest supermarket. It would be good for people living in that area though.
I shop at Countdown, I live in town so it’s easier, I suppose it depends on the specials though.
I will keep going to New World because I prefer their brands.
I will be going to Pak’nSave, because it’s so much cheaper. I just got back from Ireland, and I can’t believe how expensive groceries are here.

Shop around Dear Ed, PAK’n’SAVE have been getting a lot of bouquets since opening. On Tuesday March 19 I purchased 13 items (specials) from New World for $49.40. On the Friday I decided to do an exercise and check prices at PAK’nSAVE on those same items: Resulting cost would have been $52.83 so it doesn’t matter what supermarket you frequent it pays to shop around for those specials. Hot cross buns Dear Ed. I see from your Good Friday headline that hot cross buns have gone up again. They used to be “one ha’penny, two ha’penny”, then after a government crack-down on aspirates the price was doubled to “one a penny, two a penny”. Now at “2-a-penny, 3-a-penny”, how long before we will have to pay even more thanks to decimalisation? Steelsporran

Questions for our mayor Dear Ed, I read with interest and some disbelief Mayor Sowman’s interview in “The Sun” and to cap the lot his pet hate.. Use - “Facts and Figures”. Could the people of Blenheim seeing you are so keen on “Facts and Figures” please be informed on one or two... 1. How much in financial terms is the Parking Building losing per month? 2. Why was $100,000 gifted to the theatre trust when it was understood the $200,000 per annum was only to activate when the theatre was up and running. 3. Rumour has it the $100,000 paid to the theatre trust is to keep the contractors on the job? fact or ficton. 4. Liz Davidson Park - did the plumbers get a cheap line of toilets?
Mobility scooters
Mayor Alistair Sowman
it would appear so either that or the Council got a special on “Out of Order” signs. Now for the last shot - Who is paying for the removal of the Palms? Surely the Theatre Trust can’t be expected too! they’ll have nothing left. JM Bloy
Ferry terminal Dear Ed, I read all the stories on moving the Cook Strait ferry terminal to Marfells Beach area as, I know the area, but nothing has been said about the rail from Grassmere Salt Works up to Picton. Once the rail ferries are moved there is very little need for the expense of maintaining a rail link one would think, thus an end to the coastal tourist train. It would terminate at the new ferry terminal. N.Z. and especially the South Island needs tourist dollars. To my way of thinking N.Z. bureaucrats like Australian bureaucrats have little or no idea what is going on out in yours and my world, and they really don’t give a toss as long as they get their fat
pay packets and pensions. The Marlborough Sounds are one of the great untapped tourist areas of N.Z . It will certainly be a sad day if the terminal is moved from Picton. On another subject, I am surprised at the lack of Take a Break Webcams around the Marlborough / Blenheim area. A Picton motel has just put one up, Kaikoura, Nelson, Lake Rotoiti have them, why not the wineries and council and an extra one in Picton looking straight past Mabel Is for cruise ships arriving, one on Beautiful Karaka Point also picking up cruise ships . Don’t be shy, show Marlborough to the world! Kerry Jacques , ex-Marlborough, Tugun, Gold Coast.
Dear Ed, I was most interested to read an article on scooters, and the comments of Lynne Nicholl. I have recently become a member of the "mobility scooter brigade" and am enjoying the freedom my scooter gives me. Now, I do not have to rely on others to take me about. It seems that some of us have been rather naughty and used the roads: a practice I have used on occasions, on less used roads and why!! Never in the field of modern transport, have my guts been shaken so much when riding on the foot paths in and around Blenheim. S Cooper
King Salmon Dear Ed, It was disappointing to read of NZ King Salmon withdrawing their sponsorship of the Plaisier Family’s Tui Nature Reserve. During the hearing to expand salmon farming into prohibited areas in the Marlborough Sounds, NZKS emphasised their interest in the environment and their desire to protect it. This was an interest they shared with the Plaisier family when they set up their sponsorship of this popular restoration project. It now seems there were strings attached. I feel for the Plaisier family who spent so much time, energy and money trying to protect their environment from further salmon farming. They lost time and money needed for their project; they are directly affected by the court decision to allow two more farms in the Waitata Reach; plus they are now losing their sponsorship because they had the courage to speak out against King Salmon. Big business won the battle and is now kicking the victim. Is that what the rest of the community can expect in the future? Alice Doole Blenheim

Toyota CEO stands up to competition By Kat Duggan When Craig McDermid made the move from Christchurch to Marlborough with his family in 1990, he had no idea how long the move would last. Twenty-three years on, Craig is still the proud owner of Blenheim Toyota, and the keen outdoor sportsman is very happy he made the move. “There’s a good lifestyle here, a great lifestyle. I keep pretty busy, I enjoy mountain biking, road biking, car racing, snow skiing and water skiing.” Craig and his son Scott do endurance/long distance car racing together, competing at the main circuits in both the North Island and the South Island. “We’re pretty competitive…last year we won the North Island series overall, and in our class, and in the South Island series we won our class and came 9th overall,” Craig said. Scott also works with Craig, helping him to run the business, which is something Craig cherishes. “It’s great, I consider myself very fortunate to be able to work with my son,” he said. Craig’s wife and two daughters are also a big part of his life, and you will often find them cheering him on at the race track, or on a family skiing trip in Central Otago. “I’m from Dunedin originally, and I love Central Otago…we try and ski there as a family, which we have done for the past 23-24 years, and we love it,” he said. The years Craig has put into the business have helped himself, and his family to settle into Blenheim, and enjoy the lifestyle. “We’ve made some fantastic friends through the business; you’re mixing with primary industry people too, farmers, forestry people, contractors, a wide variety of business people all with different needs and requirements. “We’ve got some really good people [at Toyota], some great long serving staff as well,
who we enjoy and have a lot of fun, and challenges with, but that’s business,” he laughs. Craig and the 35 Toyota staff members provide sponsorship to a number of local organisations, including the Life Education Trust, Stadium 2000, Marlborough Merino Association, and the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club. “We’ve got a lot of sponsorships, I’ve just sort of scratched the surface,” Craig said. “The business does try to play a part of being a responsible corporate citizen in the town, and that is challenging but satisfying at the same time,” Craig said. Craig is not short of challenges, on top of the business, after a day in the office, he heads to the home and continues working there, and that’s not to mention training for the Grape Ride, which he is competing in this year for the second time, with three friends. His main challenge and focus for right now though is keeping Toyota on top form. “The biggest challenge is probably staying ahead, Toyota’s been number one now for over 25 years in New Zealand, and everyone wants to knock you off that post so yeah, it’s just sort of trying to stay on top,” he said.

looks at things to consider
will
Protect your family with a will A will is one of the most important documents that you will ever sign and create. So don’t delay, prepare one today.
A child is the most precious gift any parent could wish for. This is why it's as important as ever to protect them by preparing a will. Without a will, there is no guarauntee that when you, or both you and your partner die your children will be cared for by the person you believe will do the best job, or that your money will go to the people you want. For those who don't have a will, now is the time to decide how you want your property
and possessions to be distributed and how you want your dependents cared for. Some people may ask; "Why is it important to incur the effort and expense of a will?" The answer is simple! A will is one of the most important documents that you will ever create and sign. If you die 'intestate' (without a will), then the Administration Act specifies how your estate will be distributed after your death.
This of course will mean your wishes may not be carried out as you would have hoped. This may place stress, delay and costs on your loved ones, especially in the event of a legal claim against your estate. So if you have possessions, property and dependents, it's imperative that you make a will. If you do already have a will, you should revise it at least every five years and at
‘We are protected’ Making a will was something Blenheim couple Jane Roberts and Craig Fowles knew they had to do after the birth of their child Caelan. "We decided to do our wills after we had purchased our first home, then we found out we were pregnant so decided to wait until Caelan was born to do it all at once," Jane said. Their reason was to ensure their wishes would be respected. "The best way to ensure this was to have it written down. So we used our local lawyer who made it easy. I thought it would be a long winded process but it wasn't at all. "We just wrote down the specifics and the lawyer did the rest," Jane said. Their requests included what property would go to family

members and most importantly, appointing guardians for their son. "We really recommend that people prepare a will, especially if
Printed forms for drawing up your will are available from major stationary stores, however if a will is badly drafted and unclear, it can be deemed invalid because it has not been signed and witnessed properly. This is why obtaining the services of a lawyer is recommended as it will greatly reduces the likelihood of any difficulties to do with the validity or the interpretation of your will. you own a house or have children. The cost for us was next to nothing and was included in our house purchase fees," she said.
Commonly asked questions What are the formal requirements for a valid will? To be legally valid, a will must be: - Signed at the end by you, the testator. - Witnessed by two other people who are preferably at least 20 years old and be present when you sign. - Winesses cannot be beneficiaries under the Will, and nor can the spouse or civil union or de facto partner of a witness. Do I need a lawyer to draw up the will?

up your will is cheap compared to the problems that can arise from a badly draughted will. Would a spoken promise to provide for someone in my Will be valid? A spoken will is not binding. A will must be in writing, however claims can be brought against your estate under the Law Reform Testamentary (Promises) Act 1949 if you promised to provide for someone in return for services they have performed.

Crime figures show reduction Recorded offences dropped by -11.5 percent in Marlborough in 2012, compared with the previous year. During the same period the resolution rates for crime rose to 62.5 percent, well above the national average. Calendar year crime statistics were released yesterday for the whole country, with Marlborough showing very positive results. Acting Marlborough Area Commander Detective Inspector Ross Grantham said the prevention model of policing was having a noticeable impact on crimes such as property and vehicle theft. “People are taking greater responsibility for securing their property and ensuring attractive items are safely stowed away. Our theft ex car and theft of motor vehicles is now lower than our record low of 1996,” he said. Acts intended to cause injury fell by -13 percent, while the resolution rate for those offences rose to 90.2 percent.
Sexual assaults and related offences also reduced by -6.3 percent, with a resolution rate of 71.1 percent. Unlawful entry with intent, burglary and breaking and entering fell by -24.1 percent, while theft and related offences fell by -16.3 percent. Drugs, weapons and property damage offences were all reduced. The biggest jump was in dangerous or negligent acts endangering persons, which rose by 122.2 percent, however that rise reflected an increase of just 11 offences, rising from nine to 20. Inspector Grantham said overall the results were very encouraging. “This is a great indicator that our prevention model, combined with public education, target hardening and crime prevention through environmental design, with a generous dose of good old fashioned police work, is proving effective in Marlborough,” Detective In January, armed offenders police overpowered a man threatening to blow himself up in Blenheim. Inspector Grantham said.
Wheel over to the Mobility Games this Sunday
Competitors racing in the Mobility Games last year.
DOC staff losses to affect kakapo programme The proposed loss of 140 frontline Department of Conservation staff announced last week will have a significant impact on the recovery of the kakapo - one of our most endangered native animals - according to independent conservation group Forest & Bird. “As the details have emerged, it is clear that, contrary to assurances from Conservation Minister Nick Smith, the proposed cuts will have a direct impact on the conservation of some of our most endangered species,” Forest & Bird Advocacy Manager Kevin Hackwell said. One example is the small, highly skilled and dedicated Kakapo Recovery Programme team, which will not only lose its dedicated programme manager but also the sole technical ranger and sole dedicated scientist. This will destroy the team’s crucial scientific and technical skill base. The considerable success of the Kakapo Recovery Programme followed a 1995 international review that identified the need for a highly skilled technical team to closely manage the recovery of the world’s largest and rarest parrot. “This is still a highly technical programme requiring complex genetic management. Only 40 per cent of kakapo eggs currently hatch because of inbreeding and if this gets worse
Get your mobility scooters, walking frames and wheel chairs ready because the Springlands Lifestyle Mobility Games kicks off this Sunday. The Games kick off at 10am and run until noon. This fun and social event is being held for a second year in conjunction with AvantiPlus at the Lifestyle Village and is open to the community for entries. Last year saw only mobility scooters take part, but the games has evolved to include various forms of mobility including wheelchairs and walking frames.
With a big emphasis on fun and socialisation, competitors are encouraged to come in fancy dress an take part in the relays, obstacles and many competitions. There will also be complimentary tea and scones. Competitors and supporters are also welcome to inspect units. Those wanting to join in on the fun can register prior to the games or can enter on the day by phoning Springlands Lifestyle Village on 03 577 5208. Organisers are also advising people to book their taxis early.

the species could be doomed. Despite the team’s success, there are only 126 kakapo in the world today,” Kevin Hackwell said. “The team has made a huge investment in understanding the genetics of the kakapo population, in the development of artificial insemination techniques, nest management, artificial incubation, hand rearing and in developing a detailed understanding of the environmental factors that determine kakapo breeding success,” he said. The kakapo team works as part of the Southern Islands Area Office, alongside the team that manages New Zealand’s five sub-Antarctic island groups. Under the proposed changes to DOC’s structure, a smaller total number of staff will be required to do both lots of work but without the same technical and scientific support.

The win makes it the first time the Breakers have not needed game three to advance from the semifinal stage. The Breakers will be playing against their rivals, the Perth Wildcats, in the best-of-three grand final series, which starts in Auckland on Sunday.

Sun sport Poole named cricketer of the year
19
Wednesday April 3, 2013
By Kat Duggan Young Marlborough cricketer, Josh Poole, was last week named the Marlborough Cricketer of the year for the 2012-2013 season. The 22-year-old batting all rounder took away the trophy, after a big season playing for both the senior Marlborough representative side, and Celtic cricket club. “I feel very lucky, and it’s very humbling…I had a feeling I was in the running, but there were some pretty good achievements this year,” he said. Poole had a number of highlights
Josh Poole with his Marlborough Cricketer of the Year trophy.
from the season, namely beating Wairau Cricket Club in the finals last weekend, and scoring his first rep century. Cricket has been part of Poole’s life since he was only six or seven, and when he left Marlborough Boys’ College in 2008, he spent five summers back to back playing cricket. “I had a season here, and then went to England for a season, then back here, then England, and then another one back here.” He would love to head back overseas, either to Australia, where
he played cricket for a season in 2011-2012, or back to England where he has been offered some more opportunities, although he will be laying low for the next little while. Poole is currently studying to become a physical education teacher by correspondence through Massey University, and plans to stay in town while he gets that finished. “My goal is to play first class cricket, within the next 3-4 years, I would like to continue to travel too, so if cricket takes me there then that would be ideal,” he said.
GrapeRide strong as ever By Chris Tobin While other cycling events around the country are receiving fewer entries, this weekend's Forrest GrapeRide is as big as ever. A total of 2500 competitors will compete in the ninth GrapeRide on Saturday contesting the 101km ride, the 202km two-lapper magnum section, the 42km taster through Tua Marina Track and the major challenge – the five-lap 505km ride. Race spokesperson Duncan Mackenzie said part of the reason for the race's success was that entries were capped at 2500. “If we got bigger we'd end up creating less of a memorable experience for the people. We try and balance the numbers so that's it's viable and a fantastic experience for everyone.” He said other events often copied the GrapeRide. “Whenever we do anything new it ends up getting copied which frustrates Pete (Pete Halligan of Top of the South events) but we're the leaders, they're the followers.” Events such as the Round Taupo has seen entries fall from 14,000 to 8000 and the Rotorua to Taupo had in the past been bigger than the Grape Ride but this had dropped significantly. Linda Villumsen “We like to think
Competitors in last year’s Grape Ride make there way up to the Grove Road bridge.
we turn on the complete event with so much happening before and after,” said Mackenzie. “When competitors arrive to register on the Friday they can stick around for the music and food; it's a chance to kick back with their fellow cyclists.” Most of the competitors (92 percent) come from outside Marlborough. Mackenzie said at least 30 from Japan would be competing as well as cyclists from Australia, the UK, US, Germany and Switzerland. Linda Villumsen who was just pipped for a
medal at last year's Olympics will be in the field. “For us to have a current Olympian is really fantastic,” said Mackenzie. “It's hard to say who will be in the elite men's field as we've got entries from teams who won't know who's in them till Friday afternoon or evening.” A dozen top senior and junior cyclists are expected including Robin Reid, Jason Allen and Blenheim's high flying juniors, Callum Saunders and Quinn Karwowski. A field of 23 tandems will also be lining up.
Volleyball at halfway stage Last Thursday evening saw the halfway mark of Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior Summer League played at Stadium 2000. In Presidents Grade, it was Kinoaths turn to play a double header. They played MBC Seniors back from secondary school national tournament. MBC played some great combinations that were too slick for
Kinoaths to take the first set 25-20. During the second set, fill-in Michael Tuipulotu showed his class in the front court with a power hitting display for Kinoaths getting them the set win 25-19. Although there were some good rallies in the third set, MBC proved too strong again for Kinoaths and took the last set 25-17 and the game. Kinoaths then went onto play Woody
