Dog park debate

By Jacob Page The idea of a dog park in Blenheim has got the seal of approval from Kalita Cresswell who spends most mornings walking her Stafffordshire purebred and Stafffordshire cross along the Taylor River Walkway.

Kalita says there is a real need for a dog park in Blenheim to provide more social opportunities for dogs and giving owners a safe environment for their dogs to play.

Support for dog parks grows Continued from page 1 Marlborough District Council’s Animal Control Sub-Committee Chairman Jamie Arbuckle says locals and tourists alike will benefit from dog parks, should plans to create some around Marlborough come to fruition.

Jamie says proposals for dog parks in Blenheim, Picton and Renwick are at different stages.

A piece of land has been put aside on Taylor Pass Road for the Blenheim park, while a corner of the sports field in Renwick has been proposed for its park.

The Blenheim and Picton plans will be discussed at an Animal Control Sub-Committee meeting this month, while plans for Renwick are being discussed by the town’s Smart and Connected group.

Kalita says her older Staffordshire purebred is quite happy on a lead and

happy to mind her own business and does not want to interact with other dogs, while her younger Staffordshire cross is very sociable.

“I’m down at the Taylor River (walkway) most mornings trying to walk my older dog when it is quiet otherwise owners let their dogs run up to her and then I sometimes get made to feel like I’m in the wrong when my dog doesn’t respond well to that.

“If owners had a place they could let their dogs play in a different area to other dogs like mine who just want to mind their own business and walk, I think that’d be great.”

“I think the upper Taylor River (area), from Burleigh Bridge should be off lead, so people can let their dogs run and play,” Kalita says. “But I would like from Burleigh into town be on lead with the fenced off leash area.

“Then I and many others I know

of could take our dogs and children there together and it would be an enjoyable walk.

“An off leash area would be great for dogs to run around in a controlled area, so they don’t run over to others.

“Having a separate area for small dogs would be good too, as some

medium/large breeds love other medium or large dogs, but are not so keen on little fluffy dogs.

“Also, I’ve observed a lot of small dogs who are terrified of bigger dogs, so I think having the option of separating them would be better for everyone.”

Mums stand abreast at Latch-On

By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough contributed 47 children to the national Big Latch-On count at Friday’s local event.

The event was held at St Christophers Hall in Redwoodtown on Friday morning.

In total about 120 people, including mothers, children, supporters and health professionals attended the event.

Similar events were held around the country to celebrate breastfeeding.

Felicity Spencer of the Marlborough Breastfeeding Network says the event was moved from the Clubs of Marlborough to attract more

interest.

“We’ve had a similar number of mums and this year we changed the venue to bring it a bit closer to the community.

“It (Clubs) was a fantastic venue too but in Redwoodtown we thought we’d reach a few more mums.

“It was more comfortable.”

Nationwide there were about 1840 latches at 111 venues, including 1639 babies and 201 ‘selfie’ latches.

Blenheim leads sun race

By Jacob Page Blenheim is leading the race to be New Zealand’s sunniest spot for 2015 according to weather statistics.

Information compiled at the Blenheim Meteorological station located at the Grovetown Park campus of the Marlborough Research Centre shows Blenheim recorded 199.1 sunshine hours during the second month of winter.

It is third highest July sunshine total on record for Blenheim since records began in 1930.

to the same period in 2014.

In the year to date, Blenheim has had 1554.6 hours of sunshine, 15 hours ahead of Whakatane, 90 hours ahead of Nelson and 98 ahead of Tekapo.

Blenheim was the third sunniest spot last year, much to the frustration of many locals who conjured up a number of conspiracy theories as to why Blenheim had slipped off the pace in recent years.

Blenheim last topped the sunshine stakes in 2008.

Rob Agnew, liaison scientist at Plant and Food Research, says

last month was also no colder than an average July with a similar number of frosts recorded and the coldest temperature still being warmer than the coldest temperature in 2014.

The average temperature of 7.5 degrees was the same as last year.

Rain continues to be at a premium, July had just 35.2 millimetres of rain in July compared to the long-term average of 63.6mm.

The first seven months of 2015 have recorded the driest start to the year since 2003.

Variety at new development

By Adam Poulopoulos The owner of a construction company building a new residential complex at Westwood says it will provide variety in the Blenheim housing market.

Robinson Construction is undertaking the new complex build on Rose Street, off Middle Renwick Road.

The complex will contain 17 houses on larger sections, measuring between 450 and 869 square metres, and 11 houses with courtyards, all with sections measuring between 300 and 400 square metres.

It will also contain two grass reserves, and a third surfaced with limestone chip. Plants will include established trees and swale grasses.

The complex will also have a connection to the Westwood Business Park.

Robinson Construction owner Phil Robinson says the complex will suit various living situations.

“I believe it’s something a little bit different for Blenheim. The smaller sections will suit couples whose kids have left home and there are the large sections which will be good for families.

“Perhaps there are people who don’t want to be looking after their property as much when they’d rather be doing other things, like fishing or travelling.”

Phil says the complex will also function to clean up an area which had been largely ignored for several years.

He says the design for the development was inspired by similar builds in bigger New Zealand cities.

Crafar Crouch begun working on the site earlier this year, and started earthworks at the beginning of June.

Roading, infrastructure and planting on the site is due to Plans for the new development. The plans show the 28 houses stated, be completed by the end of the two grass reserves and the limestone area. Malaya remembered

By Adam Poulopoulos Council officials and Marlborough RSA members joined the Marlborough Branch of the New Zealand Malaya Veterans’ Association in Seymour Square to mark the 55-year anniversary of the end of the Malayan Emergency.

Deputy Mayor Terry Sloan and Reverend Canon Graeme Grennell were among the guests commemorating the emergency on Friday.

The emergency began in 1948 and ended on July 31, 1960.

While addressing the veterans, Sloan says they should be proud of their involvement in the war, which is often less well-remembered than the Vietnam War. “You all waited patiently to be properly recognised and it was a long wait – 30 years before the Government bestowed you with well-deserved medals for your services.

“It is said the connections New Zealand has with Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia can be traced back to the relationships forged all those years ago.

“There are returned servicemen buried here in Marlborough and they, like you, are part of the region’s proud military history.”

Sloan says New Zealand’s participation in jungle warfare helped prepare those soldiers who went on to serve in Vietnam.

In all, 1300 New Zealanders across the Army, Navy and Air Force served in Malaysia, Borneo and Singapore.

Fifteen were killed in the emergency, with three dying due to enemy action when their Bristol Freighter aircraft flew into a mountain.

Another seven died in the subsequent peacekeeping operation.

More than 30 Rangitane members made the journey south to Okiwi Bay, just north of Kaikoura, for a Karengo harvest.

Karengo is a seaweed that grows on the tidal rocks during the winter months. During the summer it dies back.

Karengo was an important supplement to the winter diet of Maori because of its high nutritional value, it is up to 30 per cent protein, and rich in vitamins.

Karengo can be eaten raw and has a similar taste to oysters, however it is more commonly harvested and then dried so that it can be eaten at a later date.

If dried and stored properly it will last forever.

To eat the Karengo at a later date most people just add hot water to reconstitute it.

In response to real estate woes Dear Ed, We sincerely and humbly apologise for the upset concerned to the widow involved. We also sincerely and humbly apologise to the woman’s family for upset they have suffered.

There is some background to the incident, which requires explanation. This explanation is in no way offered as an excuse.

As part of his involvement in the local Blenheim community, our salesperson attends garage sales every weekend – chatting amicably with the locals about what is going on in their street, listening to the neighbourhood news, and hearing who is relocating home where.

Our salesman had no inclination at all that the woman hosting the garage sale was recently widowed.

The subject of a recent bereavement never arose during what was a friendly neighbourly-like discussion between the two, and the passing on of a business card was done simply as a matter of

business courtesy.

Had our salesperson known of the woman’s recent bereavement, the tone of the conversation would have been distinctly different, and our salesperson certainly would not have initiated any businessprocurement discussions in what is an obviously stressful personal period.

The first we knew of this matter was when reading the letter in The Sun. Since then, we have tried to personally visit the woman involved, to offer our sincere and unreserved apologies for the upset caused.

It was never the salesperson’s intentions for this to happen during what he thought was a genial and cordial chat.

I can openly confirm that Bayleys is certainly not in the habit of ‘ambulance chasing’.

Through your column, we would like to publicly apologise to the woman concerned for the upset caused.

50 years ago, us busy, young mothers were bringing up our children. It was hard work washing a dozen cloth nappies a day but we all did it - rich and poor.

Today there are apparent disposible nappies which are anything but, filling our dump. I can’t remember how long it takes for them to break down.

A few try not to use them.

How much for a week’s supply? No wonder they are short of money.

Dog parks Dear Ed, I wish to support the creation of dog parks in Blenheim.

I live on Taylor Pass Road and have no objection to the one planned nearby.

I would however like to offer a word of advice which comes from my experience living in Dunedin and using my local dog park.

As a result of “issues” with some owners of large dogs the parks have now been segregated into large and small dog areas.

I have to say that before this was done I gave up using them because my small dog had a couple of unfortunate experiences with larger dogs not under proper control by their owners.

Dog parks are a great idea if well planned and maintained.

A lifetime catching possums Tony Orman talks to Picton’s Des Tierney who has spent over 60 years on and off chasing possums, and he’s still at it!

In his 77th year Des Tierney loves getting in the hills and catching a few possums.

There’s nothing like it he declares. And he’s never tired of it. What’s more he’s still at it.

“The outdoors is the best office in the world,” he smiles.

“Climbing the hills keeps you fit and as a bonus there can be good money in it if you go about it the right way.”

His possum hunting career all began in Des’ teenage years in Picton. His father was keen on the outdoors and taught his young son the ways of firearms and hunting. About age 14, Des had bagged his first deer.

His foray into possum hunting began when he left school and worked the summer season at the Picton freezing works.

“The freezing works was Picton’s university for young fellows. The best education on coping with the world and learning the value of working hard,” he chuckles.

When the works season closed between March and November, Des would possum trap around the Queen Charlotte Sound.

In 1954 he had a spell at wild animal control work first on wallabies near Waimate, then hunting goats and deer up Marlborough’s Northbank and the Leatham Valley.

In 1960 he married Shirley and shifted to Lumsden with a rabbit board and then had a stint commercial sea fishing at Southland’s Riverton. But over the decades possums have been his mainstay.

At a rough estimate Des reckons he has probably trapped well over 10,000 possums over the years. Remarkably, three of those were albino white-furred possums.

If it could seem idyllic working outdoors

in the hills and bush, Des tempers that with a comment that you have to be persistent and disciplined.

“You have to persevere whether it’s rain or shine. Climb the hills too. But if you stick at it determinedly you’ll do okay money-wise.”

Talking of money, Des recalls when he first started in the off-season of the Picton freezing works, he was getting “half a crown” a possum which was two shillings and sixpence which in today’s terms equated to 25 cents. Perhaps with inflation today that might be $2.50?

The “half a crown” back in the 1950s, was the bounty government paid on each possum killed.

Over the years, possum kills have varied depending on the area and the decade as possums probably reached their peak numbers in the 1970s then declined to the

low stable level of today.

For instance in the 1970s, Des and a companion trapped 1700 possums in twelve days in the Whitcombe Valley in the Southern Alps behind Hokitika.

But possums are slow breeders with just one ‘joey’ a year. Full of hope after the bonanza the previous year in the Whitcombe, Des and companion returned the next year and struggled to get enough possums to cover helicopter costs.

The figure of 70 million possums in New Zealand was bandied around for decades by the Department of Conservation but Des says that was laughable in its exaggeration.

“There never was 70 million and I reckon there’s about five or six million possums today in the whole of New Zealand.”

Des is an advocate of the possum being treated as a resource rather than a pest to

be eliminated by 1080 poison.

There’s a good market now for fur at $115 a kg. The meat has a potential value too not only in pet food manufacture but for human consumption in Asia.

“We have a Chinese friend who reckons possum meat would be a delicacy in China.

But 1080 leaves the meat toxic and useless.”

Worse still, rues Des, 1080 leaves the forest with a deathly silence.

“I’ve been in areas like the Taipo in Arthurs Pass after 1080 and it was like a morgue. Dead, lifeless — no birds, no wild pigs, no deer.”

Due to be 77 in November, Des still trundles the bushed hills and sells the skins after pegging and drying them out. It keeps him fit and occupied.

“But,” he grins, “They’re making the hills steeper today.”

Fire rescue More volunteers sought

By Celeste Lodewyk During the day Keiron Hebberd could be putting a new radiator into a tractor or rebuilding a motorcycle, but at any moment his day can change.

When the fire siren sounds Chief Fire Officer Keiron, along with his fellow Seddon Volunteer Brigade members could be called into action.

Keiron is one of 11 fulltime volunteer firefighters that make up the Seddon Brigade, and as much as he values their time and efforts given, he says more are needed.

“Ideally we would like to have 18 members so if anyone is interested in joining we would welcome you,” he says.

The brigade holds weekly training nights on Mondays at 7pm which interested people are welcome to attend.

“We receive many offers of help, but really people must be

willing to commit and to be properly trained.

“Our role includes fire rescue, hazardous substances, motor vehicle accidents and now assisting St Johns with first aid.

“It’s a varied role but hugely rewarding,” he says.

Keiron became the CFO in 1996 and was recognised for his efforts last year, by being awarded a Gold Star for 25 years’ service.

“It’s just a part of my life now.

“I now have my son saying he wants to be a fireman, and says he doesn’t want me to leave until he can join,” he laughs.

Other long serving brigade members include Mike Uren who receives his Gold Star next year, Justin Stevens who has served 23 years and Rebecca Stevens with 19 years.

“We are a close knit team... a big family, but we just need more members,” he says.

Centre proves a vital link

By Celeste Lodewyk The Awatere Information Centre has become much more than an advisory service for visitors and locals.

Operated by the Awatere Community Trust, it’s a place where people can use the internet, display and sell their crafts and even enjoy some company and a friendly chat, says volunteer trustee Lil Broadhurst.

“Employees Vicky and Sue do a great job of running the centre and

greeting those who come through the doors.

“We have some people who even bring in their coffee and get comfy in a chair,” she laughs.

In addition the centre provides information on local organisations and events, travel arrangements, promotes and runs community programmes for all age groups.

One example is their Actively Aging programme which provides

social trips around Marlborough.

“This is one of many, plus we try to facilitate programmes that people ask for. We welcome all ideas,” she says.

Helping to run these programmes is a base of volunteers who dedicate their time to the trust.

“We wouldn’t be here if people didn’t support us, so for that we thank our volunteers. They put in a lot of extra hours behind the scenes too, it’s a real community effort.”

Montessori House of Children sold Marlborough’s Montessori House of Children, an early childhood education centre in Francis Street, Blenheim, has been sold by the owners who established it 20 years ago.

Rose and Matthew Montgomery have sold to Marlborough couple, Rachel and Willy Roundhill with that sale taking effect from August 1.

The pre-school is licensed for children aged two-and-a-half to six and the Montgomery’s say many hundreds of young Blenheim children have passed through their pre-school since they opened their doors in 1994.

The new owners are another husband and wife partnership; the current House of Children head teacher Rachel Roundhill and her husband Willy.

Rachel herself started her education at a Montessori pre-school in Wellington before moving to Blenheim with her family in 1994. Rachel trained as a primary teacher and added her Montessori Diploma to her teaching qualifications on joining the Francis St pre-school.

The school’s staff will continue in their roles, ensuring a seamless transition.

The change of ownership took effect from August 1.

Makos in Blenheim The Tasman Makos have an ITM Cup warm-up match against Wellington tomorrow night at Lansdowne Park.

The match kicks off at 5:30pm.

On Saturday night the Makos beat Otago 31-25 in a pre-season match in Nelson.

New Makos signing Trent Renata kicked three conversions against his old team.

Volleyball Treefellas and Bella’s Team both had straight-sets wins in the president’s grade of the Fairweathers’ Senior Winter League on Thursday night.

The evening also saw a new president’s grade team, Dank Lords, play for the first time. Bella’s Team beat them 2-1 in the second game they played on the night.

Pirates overcome slow start Marlborough division one football champions Central Pirates took a while to break through, but ended up thumping Central 6-1 to reach the knockout cup semi-finals.

It took Pirates about 40 minutes to break

the deadlock through striker Shane Evans, but they ran away with the match in the second half.

The match was played on the A&P Park number one pitch.

They will play Rangers Hammers, who beat Picton 4-2 on the number three pitch.

BV Masters and Redwood Renegades will face off in the other semi-final.

Nick goes one better to take boys’ title Nick Hogg, from St Mary’s School and last year’s runner-up, beat Gus McAllister (Fairhall School) to win the boys’ singles at the Marlborough Primary and Intermediate Schools’ Table Tennis Tournament at Simcox Stadium.

Nick hardly missed a shot for the entire final, displaying some consistent topspin hitting.

Ashley Marfell, from Rapaura School, beat Rosie McAllister (Fairhall School) 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 in the girls’ singles final.

It was a great match with plenty of rallies and some good shot placement.

Ashley lost the first set but hit some great forehands to the corners of the table to get the win in four sets.

Hopping on the knowledge train

By Adam Poulopoulos A group of Riverlands School students have been studying the history of transport, and using the Riverside Railway to do it.

A group of around 75 Year 2 and 3 students are the first to tie in visits to Brayshaw Park and the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre using the newly-extended railway.

Groups visited Brayshaw Park and Omaka on Monday and yesterday, with the final group visiting tomorrow.

The schedule includes the

Beavertown Horse Stables, Beavertown Fire Station, Marlborough Vintage Car Club and the aviation centre with guidance from Brayshaw Park staff, including Marlborough Museum heritage education senior teacher John Orchard.

Riverlands School teacher Rebecca Stephen says the visit has helped build interest for the students.

“It’s motivating for them to see it all and to have John’s wealth of knowledge too.”

Rally crash puts dampener Sport inbrief on Kennard milestone Blenheim man John Kennard’s 50th World Rally Championship event as a co-driver did not go to plan when he and fellow Kiwi Hayden Paddon crashed out early at Rally Finland.

“Of course this wasn’t the result we wanted in Finland,” says Paddon, New Zealand’s only WRC competitor who was forced to retire early on Friday afternoon after crashing in stage six.

Paddon and co-driver Kennard had made an excellent start to the rally with consistently top five stage times on the four stages completed on Friday morning.

“Thankfully, John and I were okay but the car was too badly damaged and the team was unable to fix it. But we’ve been here to support the team for the

rest of the weekend.

“We’ve built up a lot of momentum in these recent rallies,” Paddon says, referring to his recent second and fourth place finishes in Sardinia and Poland respectively.

“We remain upbeat that we were able to carry the speed and consistency from previous events during Friday morning’s stages.

“We’ve already putting this behind us and have begun working on our next two events in Germany and Australia.

“Germany will be a different kettle of fish being back on the tarmac, but it’s a surface I have to learn more about and get more experience of. We are happy with our progress to date and there is much more to come yet.”
