On 23 May 2012 we published an article that said David Dew owes creditors BNZ $6.8 million and that this had been revealed in a recent National Business Review article. In fact, this money is owed by companies directed and owned by Mr Dew and not him personally. The Sun accepts the correct

position is that Mr Dew has guaranteed some company debts but that the amount of a shortfall, if any, is unknown at this stage. Further, PGG Wrightson, mentioned in a letter to the editor as a creditor, has been fully repaid. The Sun regrets this error and apologises to Mr Dew.

Two QSM For services to the community in dance and the sea By Annabelle Latz Both of Marlborough’s recipients of this years Queen’s Service Medals thank their great support networks. Robyn Simmons, a dance teacher from Blenheim and David Baker, a volunteer coastguard from Waikawa Bay received a New Zealand Royal Honour on Monday. Robyn Simmons’ Queen’s Service Medal was in recognition for her involvement with highland dancing. She has been on the council for the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand since 2002, and has served for the organisation for 35 years. Robyn has always had a vision for dancers in Marlborough. In 1997 she was a founding member of the Marlborough Dance Centre, joining forces with friend Jeannie Mark, who teaches ballet, and Robyn also complimented the centre with her involvement with jazz. QSM for services to highland dancing Continued from page 1. “It was a vision to have a company with top elite dancers. We have always helped each other out, it’s been lots of fun.” New Zealand Championship titles have gone to 20 of Robyn’s students. “I never teach them with the object to win. It’s about them doing the best that they can do, and often they end up being successful at what they do.” Her pupils have also performed in New Zealand teams at the Royal Edinburgh Tattoo, the Virginia Tat-

too and the Wonju Tattoo. “I have had lots of championship dancers, I have helped them to strive to do their best.” Robyn’s mother learned highland dancing. “I love the whole Scottish culture, the bag pipes, the rhythm.” She has been a member of the New Zealand Academy of Highland and National Dancing since 1975, and served on their technical committee since 1985. Robyn wanted to thank everyone

she has worked with over the years for this honour. “I just think I’m really lucky to have the opportunity to work with young people and have an influence on their lives.” Robyn’s husband Colin has been a great support over the years, and their daughter Sara, a doctor in Blenheim, is a highland dancer. “If you are doing something you love to do, it transmits to the people, and it all becomes a positive cycle.”

David Baker received his Queen’s Service Medal this week for his many years’ involvement with Maritime Safety and Marine Conservation. His parents Betty and Tony Baker were awarded joint Queen’s Service Medals in 1988 for their service with maritime. “It’s pretty special to be following in their footsteps.” His family moved to Cape Jackson from their farm at Marshlands in 1965. David has always loved the sea recreationally, particularly keen on his diving, which he has done since 1966, and now is chairman of PauaMac, which he has been involved in since 1998. “It’s our passion, it’s our life.” David’s Marlborough Volunteer Coastguard roles have included search and rescue, an area he said involves an amazing group of people. He recently stood down as Vice-

Chair, but he has remained on the Executive and as a senior Master. “It’s a whole lot of people who have helped me for what I’m getting saluted for.” David is Duty Harbourmaster for Marlborough, and is Maritime Advisor for the Marlborough Police. He has recently stood down after 17 years as President of the Marlborough Marine Radio Association, and remains as the Immediate Past President. “It is technology that has got us where we are today.” His three children were taught by Correspondence School at Cape Jackson, sharing his love of the ocean, and his son Jason is the top diver for their family businesses. David now has seven grandchildren, so decided to step down from some of his roles to make more time for family. “It’s been an amazing life, and

having those groups of people I’ve worked with has made it all the more special.” He said he could not have achieved

what he did without the great support of his wife Sandra. “I was blown away to get the award, it’s pretty special isn’t it?”

A small band of Marlborough Boys’ College students joined thousands of other craft on the Thames for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee flotilla. Six boys from the school made their way to London and rowed Swiftsure, a replica whaling boat built by former whaler Ron Perano, along the river on Sunday. The boys wore black arm bands as a show of respect for Marlborough Masters rower Bill Chandler who died last Wednesday. The flotilla made its way through the heart of London, led by the Queen aboard a royal barge. The Queen’s 60-year celebrations opened with a concert featuring the likes of Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Kylie Minogue. Yesterday the Queen led her procession through the streets of London to Buckingham Palace. Prince Philip was absent from the celebrations after being hospitalised with a bladder infection. Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee marks her 60th year on the throne.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, was sent to Port Gore in the Marlborough Sounds around 8:30pm on Saturday. When the helicopter arrived the team found a 42 year old Nelson man suffering from burns on about 20% of his body. “Apparently the man was cooking with hot oil in a house and the oil caught fire. As he carried the burning pot outside he tripped and hot oil splattered over parts of his body” says Dave Greenberg, Life Flight Crewman. The injured man suffered moderate to severe burns on his arms, feet and other parts of his body. He was flown to the Avalon Helipad in Lower Hutt and transferred to Hutt Hospital ED . His burns are not believed to be life threatening.

Helping hand goes a long way By Robbie Parkes K rystal McGregor never thought she’d be able to complete a triathlon, but with a bit of support and a loaned bike from Avantiplus Blenheim she did it, and hasn’t stopped moving. “Just crossing the line was what I wanted to do,” she said. “I ended up completing it.” Krystal did the Marlborough Women’s Triathlon back in April. She starting training in January and planned to do the event after a family tragedy really shocked the system. “Last year I lost my father, and he had a lot of health issues.” She wanted to live for her children, making the effort to get

up off the couch and just do it. Krystal started out small, biking 1 km at a time, but struggling to begin with. It was really the first time she had been on a bike since school. “Krystal’s bike was never capable of doing the event,” said Bill Mitchell, owner of Avantiplus who had seen the condition of it and offered to loan her one from his shop. “Originally I thought it might have been me and not the bike,” said Krystal. “The bike from Bills could do the whole thing.” A friend of Krystal’s worked at the store, and Krystal had gone there before for a session on how to change bike tubes and tyres.

From there, Bill offered to loan her the bike for the competition, even after the date changed multiple times over a few months. “Bill’s been good to me,” she said. “I started off with that one kilometre and I eventually got to 20 km four times a week.” Krystal has lost 16kg since January. After the triathlon some of her friends rallied around and got her a voucher for Avanti to put towards buying her own bike. “I wouldn’t have been able to afford a bike by myself and it just means I can keep going.” Bill said it’s amazing to see someone put the hard work in and trim up. “Just helping people really, it’s what we’re all about at the Avanti Team.” He said at the end of the day it comes down to supporting people who can help themselves. Krystal said the kids love having mum out there with them. She plans on doing another triathlon at the end of the year and aims to smash her previous time.

Youth Orchestra performing By Robbie Parkes With only two weeks to go, the Marlborough Youth Orchestra have gained a few more performers and are working hard towards the big night. The group will be performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major at the Floor Pride Marlborough Civic Theatre on June 20. “They’re going pretty well,” said Youth Orchestra Committee member Alison Fields. “It’s ticking along quite nicely.”

The orchestra were on the lookout for a number of musicians to join them for the concert and fill a few gaps. They now have a couple more cellists, viola players, a clarinetist and even some bassoon players. Although one of the bassoon players had to be hired because there aren’t many hanging around down here. “We’re putting everything together we possibly can.” “It’ll be reasonably balanced.” Rehearsals have increased to two

The concert will open with a couple of lighter pieces as well as Harry Potter highlights - music from the films as composed by John Williams. “It’s just something a bit lighter before we step into Beethoven,” said Alison. Sun readers have their say... Q: What is your best power saving tip for winter and what is the most power you use?

I hardly ever use any besides the lights, but I find that water heaters use quite a bit of electricity.

I find that bar and fan heaters use the most electricity and the price of gas for gas heaters is pricey, so dressing warm is the best tip.

Heat pumps and a well insulated house are the key to help keep the power bill down.

We try and cut down on using the heat pump, and I also end up following my kids around the house turning the lights off after them, that’s the best way to keep costs down.

Wall heaters scoff the power. I bought one last year but it affects my asthma so I don’t put it on unless it’s necessary and only for a few minutes.

Look after Pedestrians Dear Ed, I refer to the letter to the Editor titled “Look after pedestrians” in The Sun dated May 30th 2012. I feel that the blame for the lack of pedestrian crossings in Marlborough or more especially Blenheim should not be levelled at the Council but the person who is actually responsible, namely Mr Frank Porter Manager of Marlborough Roads. I can remember many years ago having many conversations with Mr Porter regarding pedestrian crossings on New Renwick Road between the Old Age Home on one side and the Springlands

Supermarket on the other. This was on behalf of the aged residents of the home suffering from Arthritis. His (Mr Porter) argument was that they could walk up to the one just shy of the corner cross the road and walk back down to the supermarket and do the return journey with their groceries. For God’s sake these people could hardly walk any distance at all. Mr Porter stated several times that he didn’t like pedestrian crossings. Just visit the home and ask around, a Mrs Miller could tell you a tale or two. Robin Harris

Rugby rules? Dear Ed, In recent years I have struggled watching rugby games and have preferred to watch rugby league games. There is two reasons for this; firstly I do not understand all the rule changes in rugby, it is no longer a simple game. Secondly rugby league games are more exciting and generally have plenty of tension and I understand the rules. During the weekend there wasn’t much to see on TV so my wife and I sat down to watch the rugby game between the Chiefs and Auckland. To our surprise we enjoyed the close encounter between these two teams, although the rules still have me baffled at times. I will be glued to the TV to watch a game I understand next Wednesday, State of Origin. Go Queensland! Rugby follower

Jubilee brings out memorabilia By Robbie Parkes Local woman Kathleen O’Leary’s treasured piece of royal memorabilia has been in her possession for 60 years, and it has resurfaced just at the right time. The booklet depicts Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee on June 22, 1897 along with illustrations of the military parades she would have been honoured with. It even has a drawing of the tallest man in the army. “I just hadn’t thought about it until the Queen’s Jubilee.” “I’ve just kept it in a plastic bag in a draw.” “ I wa s a m a z e d at the colouring, how it’s still very beautiful and bright.” Kathleen received the

booklet as a gift from her neighbour, Mrs Carter, for her 10th birthday. “She knew I was interested in history and I was always collecting pictures of the King and Queen.” “She couldn’t have given me anything better.” Kathleen never asked how she got it, but imagined that it was quite abundant when it came out. “This would have been sold here in New Zealand.” “There’s probably quite a few people that own them.” The royal procession collectible was released by W.D and H.O Wills – a big tobacco company in their day. “I would think it was just a souvenir,” said Kathleen.

It was just something they did back then, she said. “When this was put out, it (smoking) would have been very fashionable.” It’s coincidence that Kathleen grew up on a tobacco farm in Motueka, where the industry was booming back in her time.

Kathleen said she has never had it valued or thought of selling it, it was a treasure for her and she’s kept it, even writing her name inside. “If I was going to do anything with it I would give it to the museum in Motueka.”

Des Palmer and his car Robbie Parkes talks to Des Palmer about his love of fixing cars and his current project - a 1915 Willys Overland. Since buying his 1915 Willys Overland in 1981, Des Palmer has been tinkering away, fixing it up over the years. A few obstacles have blocked the road but that hasn’t stopped Des from doing what he loves. Des moved to Blenheim with his family around 1947, he was an upholsterer by trade and has always played around with cars and motorbikes. “There’s not many men that aren’t car kinked,” he said. He’s always been interested in cars, and for 35 years he had been chasing the 1915 Overland. “There’s three of them that came to Marlborough and the other two were repossessed.” “It’s the only one left.” Des managed to get what was left of the last one, years after it had passed its prime. “It was a heap of rusty old junk when I got it.” The original wheels were bore-eaten,

the motor was full of pine needles and water and the chassis started to rot. “I’ve been messing round with it ever since.” Unfortunately, only days after owning the car, Des had a serious accident at work. He worked on the planes in the airfields. On September 11, 1981 he was lifted up on a forklift to take the cover off a plane, but the pin connecting the forklift to the support cage wasn’t in. He fell off and was left in a serious condition. Three or four weeks after the accident he was still unconscious in hospital and suffered a stroke down his left side. “I lost most of my eyesight.” He lost a lot of mobility on his left too. “ I like messing round with

cars but since I had my accident and I haven’t got a licence anymore it makes you wonder, is it worth it?” But, he said the effort you put into fixing up a car and seeing the finished product you’re left with is well worth it. “You’ve just got to make do with what you’ve got.” The Overland has been in and out of storage for the past few decades and has been fixed up here and there. After a three month stint away, Des has had his vintage car back for a week now and with a shiny new paint job. He’s had a lot of help from

mates fixing up various parts of the car that he can no longer do because of the accident. “Almost everything’s done, but it’s just finishing off things,” he said. There was no back door when he started so Des made one, and he cut all the woodwork himself. “Everything’s been more or less made for it.” Des has fixed up and restored about 5 or 6 vintage cars in the past. “ I ’ve done a lot before but I always wanted a veteran (before

1920).” His last car was a 1935 Chrysler Roadster, which he used for his daughters wedding. He also had an old Chevy which eventually went to a man in Sweden and it’s now on display in a Swedish motor museum. He said the Overland has been a bit of a prize car to be fixing up and even though he won’t be able to drive it, it’s still been great. “I’d like to hang on to it.” “I’ll get one of the boys to take me out in it.”

Public use *555 for dangerous driving By Annabelle Latz There is no tolerance for dangerous driving on Marlborough’s roads. The public made this very clear to the police during Queen’s Birthday weekend, using the *555 number on many occasions to report bad driving. Marlborough Highway Patrol Sergeant Barrie Greenall encouraged the public to keep up this effort, to help them out. “We only see snapshots.” He wanted to remind drivers about the 35

demerit points awarded for bad driving habits like dangerous overtaking or following too closely. Once 100 demerit points are accumulated, a drivers licence is lost for three months. “You are over one third of the way there with one bad overtaking choice.” There were 201 infringement notices given out during the long weekend; 126 of these for excessive speed. The fastest vehicle stopped clocked 130km/h on SH6 between Canvastown and Havelock. A heavy vehicle was ticketed for clocking 96km/h; the maximum speed for a towing or heavy vehicle is 90km/h. Barrie said the lowered tolerance level of 4km over the limit, introduced for Queen’s Birthday weekend, should become a permanent fixture. “Statistics across the board show Professional, personalised the lesser the mean speed on the road, assistance with buying or selling the lesser the collisions.” The State Highway Patrol team your new home breath tested 650 drivers during the weekend, with no positive readings. On Monday afternoon police attended a minor crash on SH62, when

Sergeant Stu Wright, Tasman-based Traffic Team Leader, also had a team working in Marlborough at the weekend. They stopped 1326 vehicles at checkpoints, with one driver showing an excess alcohol breath reading. There were 370 vehicles stopped at ‘mobile breath tests;’ 245 of these related to speeding offences, and 125 of these vehicles stopped received infringement notices for no warrants, following too closely, or dangerous overtaking. Stu was pleased to see minimal issues regarding drinking and driving, but said there is still room for improvement. “I was disappointed to see people driving while disqualified.” He made note of one driver penalised for driving too closely, then half an hour later caught speeding. “We are getting a lot of complaints coming through from the public which is great to see.”

Prank calls continue By Celeste Lodewyk Last Friday the Sun published a story about a local woman receiving a hoax phone call from foreign scammers. Since we have received calls from members of the public who have had similar experiences, including that of one woman, who does not want to be identified for security purposes, who has been plagued by hoax callers for the past 10 months. This woman says she began receiving evening calls in August of last year. She says the phone calls began with a long silence before the caller hung up, but as the weeks passed she says they became more frequent. She phoned her telephone company TelstraClear and reported the “nuisance calls” and was told to record four of them in a seven day period. This she did a number of times and eventually she was told the nuisance calls were generated overseas. “I was told that because New Zealand laws don’t apply when they come

15

from overseas so the phone company couldn’t do anything. “I phoned the Police but because they were not threatening they said it wasn’t their business, but the suppliers,” she says. The calls carried on so one day she decided to speak to the caller. “I asked what the purpose of the call was and told them they had been reported. As soon as I spoke the call was ended. “This happened a number of times, them hanging up when I spoke so I knew it couldn’t be just an automated call,” she says. Now 10 months down the track, she has heard of several other locals who have also been receiving these calls. “I just think it’s not fair that this keeps happening and there’s nothing I can do to stop it. “I can handle the calls but I often wonder about those who are shift workers, a nervous elderly person or a solo home occupant,” she says.

17

Practice electrical safety at home Electricity is important to the workings of the home, but can be dangerous, especially to children. Electrical safety needs to be taught to every member of the household covering everything from interior outlets, to outside power lines. Here are some things to remember and talk to your family about. Children: Safety plugs should be inserted in unused outlets when toddlers are in the home. Make sure all outlets in the home have face plates. Teach children not to put things into electrical outlets and not to chew on electrical cords. Keep electrical wiring boxes locked. Do not allow children to come in contact with power lines outside. Never allow them to climb trees near power lines, utility poles or high-tension towers. Electricity and Water: People are good conductors of electricity, particularly when standing in water or on a damp floor.

A body can act like a lightning rod and carry the current to the ground so never use any electric appliance in the tub or shower. Never touch an electric cord or appliance with wet hands. Do not use electrical appliances in damp areas or while standing on damp floors. Remember, shocks can be fatal! Animal Hazards: Mice and other rodents can chew on electrical wires and damage them. If rodents are suspected or known to be in the home, be aware of the damage they may cause and take measures to get rid of them. Outside Hazards: There are several electrical hazards outside the home. Be aware of overhead and underground power lines. People have been electrocuted when an object they are moving has come in contact with the overhead power lines. Keep ladders, antennas, kites and poles away from power lines leading to the house and other buildings. Do not plant trees, shrubs, or bushes under power lines or near underground

power lines. Never let anyone shoot or throw stones at insulators. If you have an animal trapped in a tree or on the roof near electric lines, phone your utility company. Do not take a chance of electrocuting yourself. Children and electricity are a dangerous mix. Use only outdoor lights, fixtures and extension cords. Downed power lines are extremely dan• Commercial • Industrial gerous. If you see a downed power line, call • Residential emergency services and warn others away. Three Ways to Prevent Accidents: Independent, Competitive Turn off all electrical appliances when you go out. Teach children this habit by Quotes example. CALL NOW! Know your appliances. Read and follow Reliable, Guaranteed Workmanship manufacturers’ instructions. Practice extension cord safety. Cords 0274 339 808 are for temporary indoor use, away from moisture, heat, or metal pipes, and never “People and tradespeople alike, recommend my workmanship under rugs. and my reliable service. Find out why by calling me now”

Unprofessional wiring a risk Unprofessional wiring is considered an extreme fire safety issue to homes and businesses. All electrical work should be carried out by a qualified electrician. In some cases there may be some wiring in your home or business that you are not 100 percent happy with. If this is the case you should phone an electrician immediately and have a complete WOF inspection done by a qualified and registered business. By ignoring the problem you are risking the safety of your family and employees so don’t delay and phone a local electrician today.

Safety Tips from Laser Electrical Electricity provides light to help us see at night and fuel heaters that keep us warm in winter, but it is important not to get in electricity’s way because it can harm you. Here are a few safety tips from Laser Electrical to teach your children: • Never play with electrical cords, wires, switches, or plugs. • Stay away from fallen power lines. Tell an adult if you see a fallen line. • Never use a hairdryer or play an electrical radio or television near a bathtub or sink. • Before you climb a tree, look up. If a power line is nearby or touching, stay away from the tree. • Never touch anything that runs on electricity when your hands are wet. • Fly kites and model airplanes in a wide open field or park—never near overhead electrical wires. • Never climb power poles. Remember ALWAYS use a REGISTERED ELECTRICIAN, we recommend using an ECANZ member, they have the tools and experience to keep you safe.

Don’t risk your family or employees, call a local electrician for a full safety inspection.

Fascinating facts about electricity - About 200 years ago, Alessandro Volta discovered that when two strips of different metals were put in a sulphuric acid solution and connected with a wire, electricity began to flow. Voila! The first electric battery was developed. - The first windmill to produce electricity was in Denmark in 1890. - In the past, frightened sailors voyaging at night reported seeing ghostly phantoms of bluish light dancing on the masts of ships. Called Saint Elmo’s fire, the light is actually a form of static electricity. - Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be converted from one form to another.

By Annabelle Latz It’s his backside he’s most worried about, for the 101km bike ride tomorrow. Philip Hughes is taking on the Forrest Grape Ride for the fourth time, but this year’s theme is secretly under wraps. He featured as a butler in 2009, and his wife Wendy was a maid. Old bikes was the theme that year, and he’s pulling it out for another whirl tomorrow. “It’s from the 1940’s I’d say.” One badge says The Rally Nottingham England, and another says Supplied By Wilson and McLeod, Invercargill. It has a back pedal brake, that doesn’t work too well these days. “You have to stand up on the pedal to make it work properly.” Philip has also ridden the Grape Ride on his Genius road bike, in 2007 and 2008, with his best time being just over three hours. He said it’s a different day out on his vintage bike donning a costume. “It will probably take about four hours, depends on the wind because I’m very upright on this bike.” He said the reaction from other riders and spectators always brings a laugh, causing a few heads to turn. “It’s completely different clanging along like this!” He hasn’t done as much training this year compared to previous events due to work commitments, but isn’t too worried. “It’s all about making it as much fun as possible.” Although he won’t disclose much about this year’s costume, he said he’ll put a basket on the handlebars with a few dates, muesli bars and licorice to keep him going. “I might add in a blanket, just to make it look like I’m going for a picnic.” He’ll also carry a spare tube, just in case.
