By Annabelle Latz The pharmacy at The Warehouse is changing name and owners. From the end of the month, it will be called Community Care pharmacy. The new owners will be Debbie Carter, who is currently manager of The Warehouse pharmacy, and current pharmacy technician Krystle Neal. Debbie said the new name was an easy choice. “We have especially called ourselves that because of all the community support.” It was a corporate decision of The Warehouse to close its pharmacies, but the one in Blenheim has received so much support that Debbie thought it was a service too valuable to abandon.

“If it wasn’t for the public support we wouldn’t have had the courage to even start setting up this business” Community Care pharmacy will be in exactly the same place as The Warehouse pharmacy, and the space will be leased from The Warehouse. “The Warehouse in Blenheim has been amazing with their help to get this going.” Debbie said the new pharmacy will practically be the same service, except The Warehouse products will not be able to be purchased over the Community Care pharmacy till, and vice versa. “We will have the same values, the same stock, the same staff.

The only difference is that it will be an independent company.” Debbie said additional products will also be stocked, to have a ‘tailor made feeling for the community’ in the pharmacy. Debbie has been manager of The Warehouse pharmacy for three and a half years, and is looking forward to this new business venture with her current team of herself as pharmacist, Krystle as technician, one other full time pharmacist, and part time technician. Expanding the team is an option they are considering. “I will be relieved when the end of April comes, I look forward to that bit.”

Jags lead the way over Easter

John and Wendy Gray organisers of last weekends Jaguar Rally, with their 1958 Jaguar XK 150 OTS (Open Top Sports) at A&P Park on Sunday.

By Annabelle Latz The sun gleamed on the polished bonnets and warmed the leather upholstery of the Jaguars that assembled in Blenheim at the weekend. It was the 11th National Jaguar Rally, and went from Friday until Monday. “The weather gods smiled on us very nicely!” said rally organiser John Gray. He and his wife Wendy have a 1958 Jaguar XK OTS Roadster; one of the 160 gathered here for the weekend. The Gray’s have had Model T Fords for many years, and bought their first Jaguar two year’s ago. “I saw an XK Roadster when I was 19 years-old. I was so impressed, it took me 35 years to achieve that dream of getting one, but I did it!” He takes it for a drive at least once a week, and describes regular maintenance work on it as a relaxing past-time. “It makes me smile every time I get into it.” His Jaguar has been very reliable for the thousands of kilometers they have covered on their own road trips all over New Zealand. “We only have the roof up when it’s rain-

ing heavily. And I can wear a hat; it’s not a problem as long as you keep it pulled down hard. I have lost a few in the past.” John said the Jaguar following in New Zealand is great. “There was a very strong group here from all over New Zealand, and a couple from Australia. There could have been about 200 but we had to limit numbers for venue size.” The Jaguar rally happens every three years, alternating between the North Island and South Island. This rally weekend for Jaguar enthusiasts involved dinners, a prize giving, road trips to Havelock and Picton, and a display at the A&P grounds. Yesterday some drove over to the West Coast for the week. “We like to use local community groups to do catering, like in Havelock. We took kids for rides too, and I think the drivers had more fun than the kids, there was no shortage of drivers offering to have a turn!” In Picton they enjoyed seeing the new Emergency centre. “There was quite a large amount of people having a look.”

Tauranga Jaguar enthusiast Westell Marshall with the only NZ new 1960's XK 150S FHC Jaguar.

John said $1000 was raised for the hospice here in Blenheim, and the business the rally brought in was huge. With more than 300 people involved in the rally; going out for meals, booking accommodation, shopping, going to farmers markets and visiting local sights, money was going back into the area. “It’s quite amazing how wide

spread the spending is.” He said with venues like Clubs of Marlborough and Convention Centre, Blenheim is well capable of holding many successful events. Tauranga Jaguar enthusiast Westell Marshall, pictured above, featured in last week’s Friday Sun, won the best overall Jaguar, with the only NZ new 1960’s XK 150S FHC.

Power saving efforts get drastic

With power prices going up and winter on the horizon, energy saving efforts fast are becoming routine in any household. Picton resident, Renee Rihia has taken drastic measures to cut costs, starting with switching her power company to even restricting hot water usage. “I can only turn the hot water on ‘x’ amount of times.” She said turning the hot water off takes another six hours to reheat. “If we don’t use too much it will last four days.” “It’s a bit drastic but it’s a matter of having to.” She said her household washes clothes in cold water and uses energy efficient lightbulbs. “My house is full of them.” “They’re a lot more expensive but they last longer.” She said it is even harder for

families. “Running after kids, it’s not easy.” She said she understands upgrades and price increases need to happen but they come at the worst time. “Those upgrades always seem to come at winter time.” Renee recently switched power companies, going from Just Energy to Genesis Energy after seeing price differences on the website Switchme. “Looking on the site, everything’s cheaper.” “It was enough to make me change.” Sh e s a id t h a t p r ic e s fo r Marlborough Lines services don’t help either, especially when rebate cheques are getting smaller and smaller. “I can’t swap Marlborough Lines but I can swap my power company.” Bill Brander, RedLight campaign

programme manager for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority urges households to switch to energy efficient lightbulbs to save money. “By replacing five of the most used standard lightbulbs with five energy efficient bulbs, a household

O’fagan tops will save around $100 a year.” He said the reality is that the new bulbs cost more but they are better in the long run. A standard $1 100W bulb costs $25 a year to run while an $8 energy efficient bulb costs $5 over the same period.

Shuttle service questioned Robbie Parkes

After a six month trial, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has decided to end a shuttle service taking patients to and from Nelson hospital. The service ran from September last year to March this year but stopped due to low usage. The Board issued a statement that said 217 passengers had used the service over the six month period. “Not for one minute do I expect that is a correct figure,” said Bill Cox, a Marlburian who is against the service ending. Bill had used the service on three different occassions and said he

Bill Cox. saw seven, eight and five people using the shuttle respectively. “Even if you take that low figure

of five, that gives us twenty-five people a week.” The service picked up Marlburians five days a week, from Renwick to Havelock, to the likes of Rai Valley. He said the main factor was convenience, and a $5 or $10 increase the $30 fare would be fine. “Even if it’s only three days a week, it’s providing an essential service. James Bowyer, Service Director for Clinical Service Support, who was in charge of the service said the figures were accurate and that the ending of the service was justified. “We know how many people

travel each day to and from.” “We were excpecting a lot more demand for it and that turned out not to be the case.” St Johns ran the service on its behalf and kept a daily passenger log and report of how many people used the shuttle. The reports showed a 15% usage overall, a big shortfall of their 55% estimation. And at a cost of $58,000, he said it needed to stop. “It was a question of use it or lose it.” He said the Board were open to suggestions and a service returning but it depends on the nature of the feedback they get.

The Rail and Maritime Transport Union says it is disappointing but understandable that KiwiRail is moving to reduce passenger services from Picton to Christchurch. “The loss of the service Tuesday to Thursday will be disappointing for people wanting to travel South by rail,” RMTU General Secretary Wayne Butson said. “KiwiRail is taking a long term view that a rebuilt Christchurch will see increased demand. We share their hope that patronage will increase to the point where the service can operate 7 days a week,” Wayne Butson said.

FALLEN SOLDIER ARRIVES HOME It was a sombre occasion as Corporal (CPL) Douglas Hughes, who died tragically in Afghanistan earlier this week, completed his journey home when he arrived back in New Zealand on Sunday night. CPL Hughes arrived in Whenuapai on a Royal New Zealand Air Force C-130 at 2130 hours, and was met by members of his family and a small contingent of personnel from the 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. At the completion of the Coroner’s initial examination, CPL Hughes will be taken by his family to Tuakau whilst final arrangements are made for his tangi in Kaikohe later in the week.

Easter Road toll ZERO Driving was generally very good over the Easter weekend on our roads. But Barrie Greenall, Highway Patrol officer, said it was also down to fate that the road toll stayed at zero. “We still had a number of crashes. Some could have been a lot more serious.” Fatigue, speed, alcohol kept police busy. Two drivers fell asleep; involving a male from Christchurch in his early twenties, driving off SH1 near Rakautara in the early hours of Saturday morning, and an 18 year-old female from Blenheim, driving back from Springs Junction on Friday afternoon, hitting Birch Hill Stream

bridge, SH63. Both the drivers walked away, and both will be facing charges. Two drivers blew over the legal breath alcohol limit of 400 micrograms of alcohol/litre of breath. A 24 year-old female blew 945 micrograms alc/l. “She was grossly intoxicated.” A 29 year-old female blew 675 micrograms alc/l. Barrie said a team of seven patrol cars on the roads helped to keep driving behaviour in check. “We put maximum coverage on as much as we could.” There were 148 speeding tickets issued. The biggest offender was clocked doing 150km/h, near Riverlands.

On Sunday night two men, in their late thirties, were involved in a car crash near Havelock, and flown to Nelson hospital. One man received serious head injuries, and the other received moderate head, hand and leg injuries. Barrie said it was generally very good on the roads, with only some people letting the side down. A combination of factors kept the roads relatively safe during Easter. “It was more police, more patrols, better driving, and good luck.” Two people died in 2003 during Easter, the lowest toll before 2012. Last year five people died.

A dancing success By Annabelle Latz

The dance workshop and competition in Redwoodtown last Saturday was described as absolutely brilliant. Coming from international dance award multi-time winner, and a dancer on the UK’s Dancing With The Stars, it is a great compliment Karen Hardy right, was one of the adjudicators at the competition, featuring Latin American, New Vogue and Ballroom dancing, and held a dance workshop in the morning. “It was wonderful, people had travelled from far and wide to get to the event.” She was more than happy to help out with the event when she heard she would be in New Zealand at the same time.

“I said I’d be at it for sure.” Karen’s husband Conrad Murray, also a former dancer, is a New Zealander, so they visit our shores as often as they can with their seven year-old son Callum. Karen described New Zealand as a nation of competitive people. “Dancing gets a bit lost in the hobby world here, but I could see them improving in front of my eyes.” She described the competition as the ‘grass roots’ of where dance competitions all began. “My son even did his first competition at the weekend, he just loved it!” She wishes the event organisers Gaile and Robin French all the best for next year’s event.

“It deserves so much support, it’s about driving people forward when you see talent.” Karen and her family were relaxing near Nelson this week. “New Zealand is my sanctuary.” Gaile French was thrilled to see her hard work come into colourful fruition. She is already looking forward to next year’s event. She wanted to thank Margaret and John Cornelius for doing the music. “It’s a big job to do music for competitions, they did an excellent job.” She said Karen had amazing personality, and great interaction with the dancers in the workshop and the competition. “I couldn’t have asked for more,” she said.

Still competing at 83 years They impressed the panel of adjudicators, including multitime dancing winner, and the UK’s Dancing with the Stars big name, Karen Hardy, with their fox trot and quick step, fox trot and waltz, and cha-cha and gypsy tap. “We know dozens of dances. But I didn’t expect to get anywhere, so was quite surprised!” Ken started dancing when he was living in Springfield, near Christchurch, in his twenties. “There were a lot of nice girls, so it was a reason to keep going.”

By Annabelle Latz With about seven decades of dancing under his belt, it’s little wonder Ken Lawrence has enthusiasts following in his step. At 83 years-old, he’s certainly one of the more senior dancing regulars in Blenheim. He dances at halls around the town at least three nights a week. At the weekend he took away three second-placings with his dance partner Lorraine Taylor, at the competition in Redwoodtown.

He didn’t do as much dancing throughout his working life in Blenheim, but started up again 10 years ago. He said it’s a great way to get rid of an achy body. “By the end of the dance I feel as good as gold.” He said being a successful dancer is about detail, paying attention to the heel, toe, turn, the way you hold the partner’s hand, and standing up straight. “People tell me I’m a good teacher, but I’m just showing them what I’m doing.”

UNDER CONSTRUCTION: Renwick School’s new junior playground area is close to completion, just one of many exciting plans set for the school.

School’s growth welcomed as student role increases Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk There are plenty of exciting plans on the drawing board for Renwick School including the pending construction of four new classrooms. The school’s role count has increased significantly over the past few years and as of March 15, it was sitting at 467, says Renwick School Board of Trustees chairperson Brian Roughan. “We have very few out-of-town children

enrolling with the school, but if we have many more in-zone enrolments then we may not be able to accept those from out of Renwick,” he says. This growth is pleasing, he says. The Ministry of Education has recently approved funding for the classrooms and the school is working with its architect on the design and location of these new rooms. Another development which is currently

underway is the new purpose built junior playground as well as plans being made for the development of an amphitheatre for outdoor learning. Brian says it is hoped construction for the playground will be completed early next term. The school’s dental clinic has now been decommissioned and will be upgraded to a new entrant’s classroom until the new rooms are built, Brian says.

The other side of salmon farming By Annabelle Latz The sooner people realise the detrimental effect that more salmon farming will have on the sustainability of The Marlborough Sounds, the better. This is the message Danny Boulton, secretary of Save Our Sounds, wants to get out to everyone. A public meeting will be held next week by the group, to address and discuss King Salmon’s request for a Private Plan change to set up more salmon farms in the Sounds. Danny invites all those interested in the future wellbeing of the Sounds to come along, ask questions, and be assisted with personal submissions. He is pleased the Marlborough District Council has confirmed it will lodge a submission in opposition to the application. The Council released details last

Danny Bolton.

Peter Jerram.

week, stating a Board of Inquiry has been established by the Minister of Conservation to hear the submissions. Council environment committee chairman Peter Jerram said it is entirely appropriate the Council

lodge a submission to address the planning implications. Danny said SOS will lodge a submission, stating the adverse effects that even more farmed salmon would have in an already stressed marine environment.

Organiser Paul Eden.

Garage sale needs your support

Books, jumble and bric a brac – they want it all. The Blenheim South Rotary Club is hosting a garage sale on April 21 and 22, but in order to make it a successful community fundraiser, organisers are appealing for donations of goods to sell. Organiser Paul Eden says

anything in good condition will be gratefully accepted. “All funds that we raise are returned to the community, so this is a really worthwhile fundraiser and we hope you will support it by supporting us,” he says. Items can be left at the Salvation Army Church building at 35

George Street in Blenheim from April 16, between the hours of 9am to 1pm. The garage sale itself will be held at the RA Maru IHC building on Weld Street. Fo r mo r e i n fo r m a t io n regarding the sale leave a message for Lachlan on 578 0862.

Strengthening neighbourhoods On the strength of the huge success of Neighbourhood Support Week and the recent CPTED programme at Taylor Crescent, police hope neighbourhoods will continue to band together with their own initiatives. Community Constable Russ Smith said the newest development for familiar neighbourhoods has been to visit businesses, and

chatting to staff during their smoko breaks, about the importance of getting to know their neighbours. Russ, and Robin Harris, coordinator for Neighbourhood Support in Marlborough, said this idea has been well received. “In a time of crisis people band together, you tend to look out for people you know,” said Russ.

He said we should just be happy with the amount of farms we have, and it is just tough luck if no more can be set up. “Salmon farming is like a piggery in the sea, there is nothing natural about it.” SOS has budgeted $500,000 for a court case to oppose King Salmon’s proposal. SOS has about 1000 members, the most recent addition being Pelorus Boat Club and its 570 members, and a $1000 donation. “It is certainly gathering momentum.” Danny said there has to be more understanding around the effects that eutrofication has on the Sounds, and this must be weighed up with the proposed promise from King Salmon about more farms producing more jobs. “How do we balance the promise

of jobs against the legacy of pollution discharges equivalent to the nitrogen from 500,000 people?” SOS has conducted a comprehensive underwater study in areas around the proposed farms. “It is like a dead back yard, there’s too much pressure on the system. The Sounds can only take so much for so long, then by God it will let us know about it.” The public meeting will be at the Marlborough Convention Centre, 46 Alfred St, next Tuesday, April 17, at 7.30pm. For more information, look at www.sustainoursounds.org.nz And for more information on the adverse effects of unsustainable marine farming, Danny also encouraged people to look at http:// www.latimes.com/news/local/ la-oceans-series,0,7783938.special

Unfortunately with easter eggs and chocolate. But we do an easter egg hunt to keep the children happy when we go away to the Sounds for the long weekend.

It’s a good time to relax and I love to spend my long weekend with my family and friends.

My university friends come back for Easter, so it a great excuse to party and spend some time with them.

We celebrate with an easter treasure hunt for the kids, you have to have easter eggs at Easter.

We prefer to celebrate with family, rather than getting stuck into easter eggs and chocolates.

I get the kids easter eggs and hot cross buns and we do treasure hunts when we go to the sounds to celebrate with family.

Dear Ed Regarding the previous letters to you about the hospital shuttle bus to Nelson I phoned, several months ago, to see if I could use the bus, as a non hospital appointment paying passenger, if there were seats free. I presumed that patients travelling to Nelson would have to prebook and that the organisers would know if there were free seats on the bus. I was prepared to go up to Wairau Hospital on a “see if there is a seat free” basis on the morning I wished to travel.

It would have saved me a tedious drive and all day parking fees but was told by the lady I spoke to that on no account were non appointment patients allowed to use the bus (even though paying for the seat)!! Surely it would have been better to open the option for non hospital appointment people and fill the bus? Talk about bureaucracy gone barmy - there is no logic at all in their thinking!! Little Rhyder Dear Ed, It was unfortunate that little Rhyder was scalded with hot water recently. I know everyone needs a treat occasionally but I certainly hope she had more for her breakfast than a pie and a glass of cold water! With no money in her purse Tania should have eaten breakfast at home surely? Thats what we do, its much cheaper. Too much information in the story for me I’m afraid. Nana Waikawa

Shuttle Bus questioned Dear Ed, Since my last letter on the above topic(The Sun, 31 March) it has come to my notice of a figure quoted by officials, that the service conveyed a mere 217 passengers during the 6 month trial. Not for one moment do I accept that as being the true useage of the service! I can only presume that was the number of cash paying people who supported the service. On the three trips I made use of it, the numbers on board were 7, 8 and 5. Using the lower number as an average (bus half full) the comes to 625 people who made use of that service over the period of 25 weeks (discounted 1 week for statutory holidays). Of the others who utilised the service, I again presume they were using Community Service Cards - did Social Welfare contribute to that cost? Or were spouses or carers accompanying those patients. Not to be overlooked was the fact the shuttle bus conveyed the container of hospital records on each trip which I suspect will now need to be couriered - at what cost? Use of a hospital vehicle for that purpose would simply compound this issue. I would again ask the officials concerned to review this matter using correct figures and reinstate the shuttle bus, even on a limited basis. Anything is better than nothing as I note another correspondent has requested. Given that I get another summons to report to Nelson Hospital the response may be "Sorry, no transport". Age defying Well known for her successful career in the fashion, beauty, modeling and media industries Denyse Saunders is enjoying a quieter lifestyle back in her hometown of Blenheim while promoting her fourth book Beautiful You. Looking back over the past year it took to complete, Denyse sits down with Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk to share her experiences in writing the book as well as talking about her childhood growing up in Blenheim. At the age of fifty-four-years Denyse has the natural beauty of a woman much younger than herself and all her life she has shared her knowledge on how to look and feel fantastic at any age without surgery. Denyse grew up with what she describes as a “typical kiwi childhood”. The eldest of four children Denyse recalls her family life as being loving and nurturing. “I believe I had the perfect childhood. My whole family was very loving and we spent a lot of time together, especially at the family bach in the Marlborough Sounds. “I remember living in Redwoodtown at a young age and we would play outside with the other neighbourhood kids. “It’s what I have always loved about Marlborough, that strong sense of family and belonging,” Denyse says. Many women, like myself might look at Denyse and exclaim in disbelief; “She must have the perfect life”! But in reality Denyse says she has had her fair share of trauma throughout her life, and after suffering a recent injury which left her physically impaired, she became even more determined to carry on sharing her wisdom with women. “One of the reasons I returned to Blenheim last year was to rehabilitate after a serious back injury I suffered 18 months ago. “Then after picking up a bag of potting mix I further injured the nerves in my spine causing me to collapse and be rushed to Wairau Hospital where I had two prolapsed discs removed. “The damage caused from both incidents means I will be facing further surgery in nine months.

It has left me with numbness in one leg and reliant on using a walking stick,” she says. Another reality Denyse has to face is the fact she will never wear stiletto heels again, a reminder of the life altering changes which she must now accept and adapt to. “I honestly don’t know what is around the corner for me, but there are worse things that have happened to people. “As life changing as this experience has been for me, I keep positive and am focused on public speaking again,” she says. One day prior to her injury, Denyse signed a contract with Harper Collins Publishers to write Beautiful You. “I couldn’t get out of bed for two weeks and went from being in a wheel chair to using a walking stick. “In those following three months I focused on writing the book which was the best therapy I could have had as it kept my brain active. “It goes back to what I have always said, things happen to you in life but it’s a matter of carrying on,” Denyse says. Beautiful You covers everything from top 10 anti-aging foods, how to apply make-up correctly, putting together a workable wardrobe without spending a fortune through to how to build courage, confidence and self-esteem. “I firmly believe it does not need to cost a lot of money to look good, more attractive and youthful and my wish is that you gain the knowledge that many other women around the world have already found to be true,” Denyse says. The book will officially be launched in Christchurch but in Blenheim Denyse is holding a ‘Books and Bubbles’ event at Paper Plus on Friday, April 27 where she will be speaking as well as signing books. Tickets are available from Paper Plus Blenheim.

Ride raises awareness By Annabelle Latz Renwick man Dave McDonald has been spreading the awareness word of postnatal depression. With the help of his daughter Jenny’s London friends, and on behalf of his wife Rosanna. Dave, Evi Frank and Imelda Foley headed off on March 21, amidst the aid of automobile and bicycle, and spent nearly 19 days seeing some of the best sights the South Island can offer. Clocking up 3485km, they chatted to many people, and handed out cards about the Post Natal Charitable Trust Marlborough, which Rozanna is chairperson of. “I think the bodies are a bit Renwick man Dave McDonald with his biking team from tired!” said Dave, after their London; Imelda Foley and Evi Frank, and wife Rozanna.

return on April 1. “We did speak to a lot of people, people have started to become very aware of PND.” “We will follow it up next year, around the Te Anau area in January. I’m going to take two grandsons.” Evi, who is from Germany and lives in London, was here four years ago. “We got some funny ideas about doing a bike ride like this back then,” she said. Evi works in the health sector in London, and knows awareness about PND is growing. “We started off on short bike rides on the trip, but they got longer and longer.” Danseys Pass in Central Otago was a highlight for Evi.

Rozanna is looking to start a mid-winter market in Marlborough this year. “There’s lots on in summer, and it will be nice to bring some brightness into people’s lives in the winter.” A fundraising function at a local winery is also on the cards. “The bikeride was just great, it was really good of them to do that.”

School’s edible project Mayfield School is busy developing a new ‘Kids Edible Garden.’ This KEG is about to become a reality, after lots of planning and preparation. Last Wednesday the whole school gathered to have a ground breaking ceremony, to signify the start of the building phase. KEG facilitator Kerry Raeburn talked to the children about the planning and preparation, and helped as several students dig up the turf. Jenny Gane and Arthur Phillips, from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board were there too, as the DHB is assisting with funds for this outside learning area. Last Thursday Nigel Nicholls, from Beechhaven Excavations, came in to prepare the site on a Fulton Hogan digger. During the holidays Lachlan Marshall and a team of volunteers from the Salvation Army will be coming in to build the garden. Principal David Nott said that everyone is excited about the next phase of the project, and the whole school will be working in the garden in Term Two. He said that he has been overwhelmed by the generosity and support the school has received from Lachlan and his team.

MARLBOROUGH WIDE

“My business soon took off and it didn’t take long to get into commercial work. We worked on the rebuilding of jobs from the Blenheim Post Office through to the Power Board. Then, we were the biggest bricklayers in town.” Two faces well known throughout the region, Ken Bennett and his son Greg have built a solid reputation for their business Bennett Blenheim brick by brick. Originally called Ken Bennett, the business has had a long and rich history here in Marlborough and this year is celebrating its 50th year. What began as a one man band with Ken specialising as a solid plasterer, has over the years grown to encompass a wide range of services from brick and block laying, tile laying, plastering and stone masonry through to work on swimming pools and repairs on ferroboats. The business first began in 1962 by Ken who says it was with the encouragement and support of builder Eddie North (WE North and Sons) that it became a successful venture. “In those days the biggest house builder was WE North and Sons, and it was Eddie who supported me by providing work and looking out for me a lot. “My business soon took off and it didn’t take long to get into commercial work. We worked on the rebuilding of jobs from the Blenheim Post Office through to the Power

Board. Then we were the biggest bricklayers in town,” Ken reminisces. Once Ken’s two sons joined the business as apprentices, Ken changed the name to KJ Bennett and Sons. As an apprentice son Greg won a prestigious national title, the New Zealand Tradesman of the Year through Wellington Polytechnic in 1989. After retiring in 2000 Ken handed the business over to son Greg who now operates under the name Bennett Blenheim. “I’m still involved with some of the pricing of work, but generally I try to keep away because if I get too close to the yard, I soon get given a job,” Ken laughs. Today Greg and his five-strong team carry out a lot of work for local building companies Thompson and Devany, Robinson Construction and Clarke Construction. “We are also willing to travel anywhere. Just recently I returned from Wellington where I finished a job tiling a mall. “You name it we have probably done it if it involves bricks or mortar,” Greg says. Greg is registered as a Licensed Building Practitioner.

Support for flood ravaged Fiji New Zealand’s support for Fiji continues, and a total of $1.25 million will now assist the island, in response to the severe flooding. Foreign Minister Murray McCully said the weather is

improving, but an enormous clean up job, and many challenges, are ahead. Reports from the end of last week suggested up to 14,000 people continue to take refuge in evacuation centres, with

many facing uncertainty and major damage when they return to their communities. The Minister said assessments of the damage are still being carried out, and monitoring of further assistance will continue.

In the 120km endurance competition Charlotte was vetted out after her pony, Avaasha, went lame. She won best presented horse and pony. Despite the ups and downs, Charlotte still enjoyed the weekend. “It was really good fun, but it was quite tiring.” She will turn her endurance ponies out now, after a long hard working season. Penny Valk, also from Blenheim, was first in the Open 63km Trail Ride competition. “It was a bit different, I enjoyed the first loop but not the second.” The trail, which went over a variety of terrain, took her five hours 23 minutes. “It was really nice weather, quite warm, and heaps of fun.” She was riding her bay endurance mare BTR Royal Opera.
