New Ale House The sketch design for the proposed Speights Ale House at Springlands.
Sun EXCLUSIVE By Robbie Parkes With resource consent now lodged with the Council, Marlborough may be seeing its very own Speights Ale House after all. John Derry of Derry Properties Ltd pictured left, has been in discussion with Lion over the past sixteen months to set up the Ale House on Middle Renwick Rd, Springlands. He said it has not really been a long process and just getting everything right before going to the Council was the focus. “We just made sure we did our homework.” “Hopefully we’ve ticked a few of the boxes.” He said they wanted to make sure the design was right and that it was going to suit the people of Marlborough. “We’ve got a fantastic looking design.” Continued on PAGE 5.

Check mate McConnell’s grandson making the right moves Proud Grandfather Errol McConnell with a photo of his grandson Samuel McConnell.
By Robbie Parkes Three generations of McConnells have made their mark in Marlborough and the fourth is well on his way to international prestige. Samuel McConnell has been selected as one in three in his age group to represent England in the 8th World School Chess Championships in Romania next month. Despite representing the UK, the ten year old has strong New Zealand connections, his father, grandfather and great-grandfather having roots in Blenheim. “That’s the chronological correlation,” said Samuel’s grandfather, Errol. Errol’s father played a big part in the setting up of Scouts in the area and Errol, along with wife Pamela have worked in
the education and the realty sector for a number of years. “The Marlborough connections’ still there.” Errol said Samuel has been interested in chess for years and has competed in championships since he was five. “He’s a pretty bright little cookie.” “He’s in the top 2% of kids for their intellectual ability in England.” “His manifestation of intelligence has come through in this business of chess.” Both Errol and Pamela said they are extremely proud of their grandsons efforts. “Too right we are, absolutely.” Pamela said despite the commitment to chess he is still a kid. “He’s very immature in other ways.”
“When he’s outside he can’t sit still for ten minutes.” Samuel attends Sussex House in London as well as Johns Hopkin University in Washington USA during summer. He also got into the finals of the UK Primary Mathematics Challenge, placing in the top 1% of 90,000 pupils. Samuel’s father, Kym, is a renouned Ultramarathoner who has completed a race on every continent including Death Valley. “He completed the seven most extreme ultra-marathons in the world,” said Errol. “There’s a bit of specialness about that side of the family.” The family moved to London about ten years ago, but still have strong roots here and sometimes come back for Christmas.
Weather - more high pressure systems La Niña ending, but easterly circulation regime to persist. Here is the NIWA National Climate Centre’s outlook for the Marlborough area, relating to the La Niña event dissipating, and ENSO-neutral conditions returning to the tropical Pacific. During the April to May period more high pressure systems and ridges are
expected over and east of southern New Zealand. For late autumn, April to June 2012: Air temperatures are likely to be near average, seas around New Zealand are likely to remain slightly cooler than normal, late autumn rainfall will be near normal, and soil moisture levels and river flows are likely to be near normal.
Temperatures will be near average, with frosts typical of late autumn from time to time with the anticyclonic conditions. In spite of the collapse of La Niña in the tropical Pacific, the easterly circulation regime that has been dominating New Zealand climate patterns since December 2011 is expected to persist through the April to June 2012 period.

New dog laws?

The Sun
business survey shows positives
Public gets chance response
Annabelle Latz There is much discussion this week about proposed new laws for Marlborough dog owners. More than 50 people are submitting words regarding the proposed revised Dog Control Policy and Bylaw, at the two-day hearing at the Council chambers, today and yesterday. Margaret Anderson is strongly against the proposed Dog Prohibited Area at the Harling Park Japanese Garden. She walks her five year-old dog Lady, a huntawayborder collie cross, every morning at the park, which she lives next door to. Margaret said the proposed change will mean the walking path surrounding the pond will be fenced off, stopping her walking near the garden. “It cuts the main path from people’s use.” The creek and the waterfall will also be fenced off under the proposed changes, which Margaret doesn’t mind about because she said it’s a good safety measurement. But one big fence cuts up the whole garden. “The whole thing will be chopped into bits.” She was told it was for cultural reasons, to respect the gifted area from Japanese sister city Tendo. “Once you give a gift, you give a gift. You don’t attach conditions to it.” She is also concerned about the new proposal to have all dogs on leads in Harling Park. “This is no way to exercise a dog,” she said. Margaret said people who walk their dogs in Harling Park also do a great job looking after the area by picking up rubbish, unblocking the grate so the pump for the pond can work efficiently, and making sure all dog waste is picked up. “But we draw the line at used condoms and vomit.” Margaret said with 10,000 registered dogs in Marlborough, the Council needs to work with dog owners, and keep local people’s wishes in mind. “I think there is a lot of ill feeling out there about this.” She agreed with laws like keeping dogs out of the

New store big ideas
By Robbie Parkes The Sewing Store’s new premesis in town has opened the business up to a wider range of fabrics, bigger spaces and new ideas. The shop opened last Monday, moving from it’s previous location in Centre Point Mall on High Street to the empty space across the road. “Luckily it was right in front of us,” said owner, Anna Radmall. “It was a very busy weekend.” The new shop is more open and accessible, and she said the move has been good. “It’s working out well.” “We’ve got a nice big open, spacious area now,” She said the new space has made it easier for customers to find the colours and fabrics they want and what specific department they need.
“We started to do things to make it accessible for everyone.” “People can take time to make the fabric choices and sit down and try the sewing machines.” She said the store now has a whole new range of fabrics in, as well as lots of wool and coat-making fabrics for winter. They source locally as much as possible and focus on having Merino wool available. Anna ran classes out of the old location but said the new space has opened it up a lot more, with tutors coming in and taking classes as well as Anna herself. “It can be evening classes for beginners and people just wanting to improve their skills.” “It only really comes to life when you turn it into something, and that’s
sewing store owners lars hamann and Anna Radmall with son leonard.
the fun part.” Most classes happen on the weekends and may extend over a few weeks, with a focus on projects such as patchwork and dress making. Anna said they have seen a fair few customers coming
through with good feedback. “We’ve had some positive feedback which is the more important thing really.” “We’re happy here and if the customers are happy too, we must have done something right.”
Work starts on North Street soon
Road work deferrals to ease rates
The Council will be undertaking work on North Street within the next few days. The work includes the excavation of roads and may cause brief disruption to traffic and access to property. There may also be interuptions to water supply. Work will generally take place between 7:00am and 5:00pm.
The Marlborough District Council has proposed that roading projects in the coming year may need to be deferred to hold down rates. The Council is re-examining its budgets for the Long Term Plan. Some suggested deferrals are a number of road works, including seal extensions and footpath work in
the CBD. Other savings are being made by putting off footpath work until the laying of fibre optic cable in town is finished. Residents can have their say on the roading budget in the draft Long Term Plan and submissions for the Plan close on May 10.

CAwthRon will sell Hill Laboratories and the Cawthron Institute have signed a Heads of Agreement which will see Cawthron sell its Marlborough laboratory to Hills. The sale is expected to be completed by the end of June following due diligence. Cawthron’s Marlborough operation will transfer to Hill Laboratories, which will continue to provide the same services from the same premises in Grovetown Park, Blenheim. Included in the sale is Cawthron’s environmental chemistry testing, which is currently undertaken from the company’s Nelson laboratory. For Hill Laboratories, New Zealand’s foremost commercial laboratory, the purchase provides an opportunity to strengthen core areas of its business – environmental and wine testing.

The new Rebel Sports to be built in Blenheim is still in the early stages but plans for the site are already in mind. The Lifetime building along with the current car park will be demolished to make way for the new sports store and a new carpark. Rod Duke, group managing director and deputy chairman of Briscoe Group Limited, who own Rebel Sport said that once everything is in place the build will take about 16 weeks. “We will be opening and trading about September, October this year.”

Ale House proposed for Springlands Police inbrief He said Springlands suits the Ale House concept, and the site will work well with surrounding catchment and also greater Blenheim region. He said the Ale House has an emphasis on family dining and will seat around 90 internally and also 40 in the North West facing courtyard.
The High St, Taylor River site proposed last year saw a split in Council opinion and little progress was made. Blenheim’s Ale House will be the 11th established in the South Island and the 18th in New Zealand.

Graeme Musson, acting manager of AWF’s Blenheim branch said the need is definitely there but sending outside help is not practical. “A lot of people have been down and had a look at it, but the main problem is accommodation.” “And it will continue to be a big problem.” He said they have sent a couple of guys down, only to come straight back up.
“There’s only so many materials you can get and so many hours in the day.” “It’s just waiting, waiting, waiting.” He sa id people a re looking for work here but many are not willing to make the move down south. “The only thing that’s gonna motivate you to go down there is money, and there’s no money down there.”

“We’ve been looking at Blenheim for some time now” Nelson’s Speights Ale House was the first of the new generation design, and Blenheim will be the second. “We look forward to including design influences from the Blenheim region and landscape,” said Mark.
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “Obviously it’s a great brand and it’s good for Marlborough to have.” He said the Speights Ale Houses’ have a good family environment and they are not just a bar, something that will suit Springlands. If resource consent is passed by the Council, he hopes for work to get underway as soon as possible with plans to have it open and running at Christmas. Mark Neal, Concept Bar Manager for Lion said they are really excited about getting an Ale House in the Blenheim region.

Taking sides - Marlborough have your say now Dear Ed, If you’d asked me some time ago whether I supported King Salmon and their push to grow their business in our Marlborough Sounds I was probably leaning towards agreeing. After all, on the face of it, King Salmon are promoting this expansion as a project of National importance, and there seemed to be some major benefits not only for our local economy but the country as a whole. I’ve spent a lot of time in the Sounds and to a large degree have accepted both mussel farming and salmon farming. These operations just float around quietly in our Sounds producing seafood for us, along with export earnings, so what’s the problem? But when KS completely ignored our District Plan, which encompasses the wishes of the local community, and decided to take the fast-track through the use of the EPA, with strong support from the Government, I smelt a rat. I took a closer look at what’s been going on so far, and what affects this new move would have on our Sounds if allowed to proceed, and I challenge
you to do the same. From what I have seen of their application if allowed to proceed KS will have unprecedented rights to use free public water space at their own discretion for 35 years for their commercial activities. And this water would be off limits to other Sounds users. Our own council won’t be in control because the EPA ruling is final, and if this application is granted it opens the floodgates for further growth in all areas in the Sounds. Work is already under way by interested parties looking to climb aboard this expansion, and this includes iwi who have a 20% piece of the action by right. I urge anyone who is concerned about this issue, and the impacts it will have on us all, to ask the hard questions, and attend as many information evenings as you can. If you are not happy about what’s going on make a submission about it. Have your say Marlborough, and remember time is running out. David Lloyd

All salmon farmed in New Zealand are King Salmon. They are born in land-based hatcheries and transferred to sea cages or fresh water farms to grow out to harvest size. Most sea cage farming occurs in the Marlborough Sounds, Stewart Island and Akaroa Harbour, while fresh water operations in Canterbury, Otago and Tasman utilise ponds, raceways and hydro canals for grow out operations.
Funding Parental law Dear Ed, Well the National led government cannot afford $150 million to fund parental law. So says inept finance minister Bill English. Then to top it off it will veto the bill. How undemocratic! Government should show some strength. Get tough with people on dole. Offer them 3 jobs - if they take none, then no dole.
That way the government would save hundreds of millions of dollars and could then easily fund much needed parental leave. Don’t talk to me about government wastage either. Lots of $150 millions are wasted on silly policies, bureaucracy and nonsense. Don Coyote
Paid parental leave Plunket recommends six months paid parental leave to give every child born in New Zealand the best start in life. It says the Amendment Bill deserves the opportunity to be debated through the parliamentary legislative process. A Plunket spokesperson said The
Bill would be a step towards aligning ourselves to other countries with more generous paid parental leave legislation. It would also affirm New Zealand’s commitment to the United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child.

Disabled carparks hard to come by in central Blenheim By Robbie Parkes The use and abuse of disabled parks has gone too far after one card-carrying Blenheim resident had threats verbalised at him on Tuesday. Bob Kamea tried to get a park on Queen St but found the only disabled space, outside Westpac and Avantiplus, to be occupied by a non-card carrying driver. He found a park elsewhere but talked to the driver of the parked car, only to have the man threaten to ‘smash his face.’
E L A S R
FO
“Very aggressive,” he said. “There’s some nasty people around.” He said he has had similar threats in the past and has reported one incident to the police, where he was told it would be looked into, but with no result. “It’s just a waste of time.” “You just can’t get anything done.” Bob carries a card to show his right to use the disabled parks. “It’s not something you get for nothing.” “I’ve paid for my rights.”
He said the 10 minute space is not enough for Queen St, especially for the amount of people with disabilities needing to access it. He said he has seen a non card-carrying car park there for 45 minutes without being noticed and the fact it’s outside the ATM does not help. “It just shows you the wardens are not around.” “It never should have been put outside the ATM.” Bill Mitchell, owner of Avantiplus, said he
did not see the incident with Bob, but does see a lot of people overstay the ten minutes. “I have seen people park there for more than an hour.” “That should be someone just popping into the bank.” He said it is a problem especially for elderly people wanting to use the post office, the bank and his shop as he sells mobility scooters. He said there needs to be more spaces available, even just across the road.

An easy to grow herb with loads of benefits!
ALOE VERA
The natural gel inside this succulent’s plump leaves has anti-inflammatory, healing properties. You can treat mild burns, sunburn, blisters, insect bites, cuts, ulcers, inflammation, rashes, eczema and psoriasis just by rubbing on a cut leaf. Immediately you will notice a soothing effect. It’s probably one of the best-known herbal first aid treatments we can grow in our backyard. Amazingly, this gel also promotes healing and cell and tissue regeneration. It is able to reduce pain and inflammation and improves Always use it straight away if you can, healing time. within 2-4 hours of cutting a leaf. And It has antibacterial and antifungal properties too. preferably from a plant that is at least 3
years old as the benefits are greater in more mature plants. Aloe Vera is easy to maintain but does
need a frost-free environment. You could grow in pots, to enable shifting them indoors before winter sets in.

Shift trees
Tips
Now is a good time to move trees and shrubs because they are in a dormant growth period. If you have planted in a spot that’s too wet, windy or boggy, then move it now. Just choose a suitable spot first before you dig it out! Train Trees Tie up plants while they are leaf-free. When they have shed their leaves you can get a better idea of the branch structure. Train them up walls and pergolas. Training a tree flat against a wall is a good way to stop large species from taking up too much room. Clipping Trim native or fruit flowering hedges now so they stay in check and recover over winter, ready to look beautiful in spring.
BUGS Katydids
- these insects could be in your garden. Fully grown they are about 40mm long and bright green in colour with wings and antennae. You’ll find them sitting in the top of your camellia bushes, roses and many other shrubs and plants.

- these insects are noisy! They love lawns in warmer regions (Marlborough northwards) and can do damage. They eat the grass over summer and cause bare soil around the cracks in which they live during the day. Pour water with detergent in it down the holes they are hiding in to flush them out into the sun. They don’t like the intense sunlight!

Mixed feelings about marine farming proposal NZ King Salmon released a document yesterday, expressing disappointment that Marlborough District Council is opposing its requested plan change, and claims Marlborough residents have given resounding approval to the marine farm proposal. It stated that an online survey commissioned by the company revealed 54% of respondents from Marlborough supported the company’s plans, with 14% opposing. A year ago King Salmon announced it would be applying to the Environmental Protection Authority to add nine salmon farms to the existing five, in the Marlborough Sounds. This expansion will increase the company’s water space by 11 hectares, to 17, representing 0.01% of the Sounds’ 150,000 surface hectares. NZ King Salmon CEO Grant Rosewarne said the company is “dismayed” at the Marlborough District Council’s sudden change of heart over its application for 11.5 surface hectares in the Marlborough sounds.

It also represents a 180 degree turn in promised support by the MDC.” He said the decision was influenced by a small but vocal minority who have led an emotional campaign of misinformation. “It would be more responsible for the council to make a neutral submission that documents its potential concerns rather than
opposing the proposal outright without a clear mandate from its ratepayers. This way the board of inquiry would have all the relevant issues in front of it.” Councillor Peter Jerram, the Council’s Environment Committee chairman, said the Council has a role to acknowledge the Community Development Plan for the Marlborough Sounds. Specifically, this means being mindful of how much aquaculture pressure the Sounds can take, and the potential for future large scale investment in the Sounds, if this plan change was approved. “The Marlborough District Council has a huge responsibility for the future of the Sounds. He said opposing the plan changes is showing respect for the future for the people of Marlborough. Peter was also concerned with who would hold Planning authority if NZ King Salmon’s plan change request went ahead. “It would mean they (NZ King Salmon) would hold that role.”
Walking the world for a good cause Come and join in for a walk, for a great cause. The Pelorus Sounds branch of Rural Women New Zealand has joined the initiative of Associated Country Women of the World, to walk the world and raise funds for organisations around the world that assists women and children. The Marlborough Provincial Rural Women NZ is taking part.
On April 29 at 10am, a walk will take place to walk through Marlborough. It will start at the Lions Reserve at Hawkesbury Rd. It will take 11/2 hours at medium pace. All the different groups throughout the world will start at the same time, meaning it will happen over a 24-hour period. The $1 entry per adult will go to Coins for Friends to
help fund further projects. Please be there by 9-45am to register so that we can record the distances every one walks to get our grand total of Km. Everyone is most welcome to come and join the day. If very wet the day will be cancelled. Phone 5788242 for further information before 9am.

John Hart and Powhiri Cooper are gearing up for Saturdays game.
The Marlborough based Wairau Taniwha rugby league team will be debuting at Athletic Park this Saturday. This is the first season in a decade for side, which is part of the Tasman Rugby League competition. Team player and organiser John Hart said there are five teams involved, and Wairau Taniwha won their last match against The Rabbits in Renwick, 24-22. John expects another strong crowd turnout for this weekend’s game, the first at the official home ground, after about 100 people turned up for the game at Renwick.

There are three Friday 13ths this year, in January, April and July. The 1980 film “Friday the 13th” grossed nearly $40 million during its initial cinema run. Fear of the number 13 is known as triskaidekaphobia, while fear of Friday the 13th is known as paraskavedekatriaphobia. In Ancient Rome, Friday was execution day. In Britain, Friday was customarily Hanging Day. The Turks are said to have so disliked the number so much that it was all but eradicated from their vocabulary. The number thirteen is associated with the supposed number of members in a witches’ coven.

Lazza still champ
‘Lethal’ Lazza Stevens above is still on top after retaining the Southern Championship Wrestling belt in Blenheim’s Brawl in the Hall. He beat out challenger Reece Breeg, in a packed out Mayfield School Hall to keep his prize. Tickets sold out with a few more squeezing in. The next big SCW show will be Marlborough Mayhem, penciled in for mid May in the Marlborough Boys College hall.
Fundraising dinner/auction in support of Marlborough squash player Megan Craig A Blenheim woman’s dream of becoming the world’s number one ranked women’s squash player is a little closer in sight for Megan Craig, as the Marlborough community rallies to support her journey. A fundraising auction/dinner is being held on Tuesday, April 24 at the Marlborough Convention Centre from 6pm, with funds raised going towards Megan’s travel costs to up and coming tournaments throughout Australia. Guest speaker will be Dame Susan Devoy who is actively helping Megan to realise her dream. During the evening the auction will be run by Aaron Davis of Harcourts with a huge variety of items up for
grabs. Some of these auctions include accommodation in the Marlborough Sounds and at various locations throughout New Zealand, a sailing trip valued at $1000, two squash racquets, plenty of wine and a variety of vouchers from local businesses to name a few. Since Megan began her fundraising venture she says the support from the community has been “overwhelming”. “At one stage it was looking like I had to move to Australia to be close to the tournament action, but Marlborough has been really supportive of me staying here which makes me feel so privileged,” she says.
In order for Megan to get her world ranking up (currently 89), she must compete more, particularly overseas.
