Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Don Zimmerman does not like to complain, but waiting for urgently needed surgery is really getting him down. “I want to know the definition is of what is ‘urgent priority’, I was flabberghasted when I read that.” The 77 year-old Blenheim resident is referring to a letter he received from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board last week. Don had a catheter inserted four weeks ago at Wairau Hospital, due to prostate complications, and was told he needs to be seen by a urologist again soon. The concern was reflected in his eyes, as he spoke of his anxiousness for awaiting surgery. While confined to a catheter, he cannot continue on with the shoulder surgery he needs,

as a result of a fall he had 12 months ago. I won’t be able to change the plugs on the catheter if I have shoulder surgery, so I need to get rid of that first.” The letter was informing him he was classified as an ‘urgent priority’ to see a urologist, and would be waiting between three and six months. “I have no say in the matter, I just do what I’m told.” He is very concerned because he is in discomfort, and has no idea of the seriousness of the case. “I can’t work out this so called ‘urgent.’ What is the legal definition? I always thought urgent was ‘as soon as possible.’” The Sun contacted the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board on Don’s behalf. Communications Advisor for NMDHB

Katherine Rock said there was no time definition for ‘urgent priority’ and her message was for patients to keep in touch with NMDHB if they had any questions. “If you think you are waiting too long, let us know.” As she understood, there were no long waiting lists for patients needing to see specialists. She advised that Don should contact the hospital directly. “And if he wanted to make a complaint, he is welcome to do that through the website or ring the District Health Board. “He may need help negotiating the system, we are more than happy to follow this up.” Katherine said The Sun will follow Don’s case, and find out if he gets to see a urologist at an earlier date.

Easter trading good, but air show missed By Robbie Parkes Easter weekend brought out the good weather but for local businesses, the Classic Fighters air show was sorely missed. “Friday and Sunday were very quiet in the hotel in comparison to when the air show was here last year,” said Brett Inkster, general manager of Scenic Hotel Marlborough. The hotel was open over the weekend but Saturday brought the majority of the business. “We had a bit of walk-in business but it was a lot quieter than the year before.” “The timing of Easter always plays a part in it.” While the Easter airshow was not held in Blenheim this year, Brett said the 11th National Jaguar Rally did make up for some lost business. Ryan McQuillan, general manager of Cornerstone Bar & Restaurant agreed the rally made up for a bit of lost business.

“Easter was busy.” “That Jaguar club being here made a difference.” Cornerstone Bar & Restaurant opened all the way through the weekend but only as a restaurant on Friday and Sunday. He said the laws surrounding alcohol sale on the weekend can be a bit hard on business. “I can understand why businesses don’t bother opening,” said Ryan. “That’s all well and good but it’s just explaining to every single person they can’t have a drink unless they’re dining.” “You stick to the law.” But on the bright side, the weather kept the flow of customers coming through and mornings were flat out. “Other than that the weather was fantastic, and we were owed that.” Tim Thomas, director at Thomas’s likewise said it was a busy weekend but the air show did leave a gap. “That is a huge source of business.”

Tim left, and Hamish Thomas, directors at Thomas’s.

“Easter trading was very good, not half as good as last year.” He said they were only open for Saturday but still saw a good flow

Locals want Ale House

ABC Audit 2011 The Sun 18,701 copies. The largest circulating newspaper in Marlborough.

Public opinion shows that Malburians are already enthusiastic about the new Speights Ale House going in at Springlands. “I reckon it’s good because I’m a big Speights drinker,” said Mark Richardson. “I guess it’s putting more business in Springlands.” Warren Lesueur said it is great for the town, there is a different clientele out there but it would have been nice by the river. “It might give the old Springlands tavern a bit of a shake up” he said.

Rachel Smith said it was good to have it in Springlands, but she was against the idea of the Ale House altogether. “It’s still just a pub.” John Derry, director of Derry properties who applied for resource consent for the Ale House said he hoped that local contractors would be used. He also hoped that the resource consent would go through soon so they could have the Ale House up and running before Christmas.

Devine salon up for sale Hairdresser Arthur Devine has put his beauty salon in Picton up for sale. A beauty salon listed on Trademe and going for $35,000, was put on the website on April 2, with photos identical to those on the website for Arthur Devine Inspired Salons & Spas. The salon, located on High St in Picton was up for sale with a large array of furniture and items listed as part of the purchase. Arthur came into the public eye last year through a feud with William Yates, the landlord of his previous salon location on High St in Blenheim. The Sun has tried to contact Arthur since Monday, but at time of going to print we had not received a reply.

Make motor cycling safer By Annabelle Latz Tom Brown and John Laing are keen motorcyclists, Last year they were instrumental in forming The Marlborough Motorcycle Road Safety Group. They want to make it a port of call for all things to do with motorbike safety. At the monthly meetings, representatives from Marlborough Roads, ACC, the Police, Marlborough District Council, and motorcycle group members from Ulysses and Vintage attend. “The meetings are always positive and constructive,” said Robyn Blackburn, Road Safety coordinator at Marlborough District Council. Tom has been riding for nearly

60 years. “The attitude used to be that all people who ride motorbikes are larrikins,” he said. Tom said this is thankfully no longer the case. John is a motorcycle instructor, and has been riding for about 40 years. He said it is important to share knowledge about what makes roads better for riders. “We talk about gravel, pot holes, repairs, publicity, speed, training and awareness,” he said. ‘Inspection plates,’ or more commonly known as ‘man holes’ can be very dangerous at roundabouts, and changing the steel lid to a non-skid surface could solve this.

“Marlborough Roads has been really good. We are working together on a priority-based list to improve areas of road.” Marlborough Roads manager, Frank Porter said meeting with this group is helpful to better understand issues from a motorcyclist point of view. “Loose or slippery material on road surfaces is of particular concern to motorcyclists and our staff are focused on keeping road surfaces as clean as practicable.” Frank wanted to remind riders that during vintage, despite the best practices by the transport companies, there will inevitably be some small quantities of grape juice leaking from trucks tracked around

Marlborough roads. “The road surface can be much more slippery than usual. During vintage motorcyclists shouldn’t corner at usual cornering speed and should treat all road surfaces, especially at curves and intersections, as more slippery than usual.” “We want to be positive about safety,” said John. ACC levies are quite expensive. The average age of riders is older now. Tom said levies increased in 2010, and range between $200 to $650, depending on the size of the engine. “Cars are cheaper now,” said Tom. For more information on The Marlborough Motorcycle Road Safety Group, phone John on 03 577 6663, or 021 0828 8713.

ANZAC Day parade venue a good one

By Annabelle Latz It is fitting that the ANZAC Day parade will be at Blenheim School next Wednesday. Because this was where a good few of the participants in the parade would have been educated many years ago. Peter Slape is organiser of the parade and Vice President of Marlborough RSA. He can’t wait for 11am next Wednesday to roll around, and expects about 200 people to join

in his enthusiasm. “It’s appropriate we are going here, the majority of the local people who went overseas and did their thing would have gone to this school.” He said Blenheim School has been great to work with, and is ‘over the moon’ to be involved. “And there has been tremendous interest from young people, which is encouraging.” There will be three school students carrying wreaths in the

parade next Wednesday. It wi l l b e Head Boy at Marlborough Boys’ College, Jack Keown, Senior pupil at Marlborough Girls’ College, Emma McIntyre, and Tom Hyland, from Bohally Intermediate. Head Girl at Marlborough Girls’ College Olivia Sheat will be singing the New Zealand and Australian national anthems, and her younger sister Lucy, from Bohally Intermediate, will be performing the scripture reading.

Veterans group needs more members Robbie Parkes The Kings Empire Veterans were founded in 1900, sixteen years before the New Zealand Returned Services Association, but over the years membership has dwindled. “It’s the oldest military organisation in New Zealand,” said Ian Hislop, President of the organisation and Marlborough RSA member. “Some RSAs recognise it and others don’t, but our RSA does.” The group was formed by Lord Ranfurley, as the Empire Veterans Association, later changed to Kings Empire Veterans in 1911. There were fewer than 7000 veterans in New Zealand at the time including ex naval, imperial and colonial troops and

so an organisation was set up. The membership dated back even to 1840, and included veterans of the New Zealand Wars and the Boer War. “Right back, even to the Napoleonic Wars,” said Ian. But, since the NZRSA started in 1916, the association membership has declined. Ian said the Marlborough branch has roughly 32 members at present but it needs to grow if they are going to survive. “Because it’s one of the oldest clubs we would like to keep it alive,” said Ian. “It’s an old historic thing.” He said the main thing now is to get more members and younger veterans to keep the club going.

“Just got to try and interest some of the other military men in the country to become members.” Veterans from the likes of Bosnia are at that stage, but Ian said they still have a lot of commitments that keep them on the outside. “There’s enough of them to keep the RSA’s going but the trouble is they’ve got the house and family to keep.” He said there are only two other organisations in the South Island. “I’m surprised a branch hasn’t formed in the likes of Dunedin.” “Hasn’t seemed to have got that far.” The group parades on ANZAC day and have their own wreath to lay at the service.

Big box retailers don’t do any favours Robbie Parkes With the new Rebel Sport set to open later this year, local sports retailer Stirling Sports is expecting the worse. The store has already downsized due to earthquake proofing of their building on the corner of Market and Main St, and owner Greg Hall said the new retailer is not going to help that fact. “Another big retailer, they eventually show up.” “Generally they take 20% off your revenue straight away.” He said big retailers will bring more business for them to start with, but that does not last long. “We get opportunity from it

Stirling Sports owner Greg Hall.

initially.” “That’s what we got from Kathmandu.”

The new outlets sell the same types of products, an issue that has led to the store cutting it’s range, said Greg. The slow decline comes pretty quickly, he said. “I guess I’ve known they’ve [Rebel Sport] been coming for about 5 years.” He said business in general has been alright, a bit patchy, but winter won’t do any favours. The store has been in Greg’s family since 1981, and he said the small businesses are suffering from the increase in big retailers over the years. Business has grown in the town, but Blenheim itself has not, he said.

“Even the big guys are downsizing.” The new Rebel Sport for instance, will be built right next to Briscoes and both are owned by the same company. He said as a result, the two stores will have one general manager, a move that already saves them around $60,000. “Sign of the times,” he said. Despite the warning signs, Greg is still optimistic about the business. Stirling Sports has 43 stores nationwide and are the biggest retailer in terms of shop numbers and Greg is already planing to get something bigger when they can.

Professional beauty tips

iche l

In the lead up to the up and coming release of Denyse Saunders new book ‘Beautiful You’, the Sun will be running a book give-away competition. Here is a sneak peek of some of Denyse’s beauty tips for women of all ages. Puffy eyes: Eye fatigue or irritation may make the eyes puffy. Sleeping on the stomach causes extra fluid to pool in the upper and lower eyelids. Sleeping with the head elevated on an extra pillow can often make all the difference and, of course, having eight hours sleep every night helps as well. Nail health: The shape and colour of your nails may be indicators of your health. Pale or bluish nails may indicate anaemia. If the pink colour is slow to return when the nail is squeezed, it may be a sign of decreased circulation. Clubbed nails shaped like the back of a spoon may mean cardiopulmonary disease or asthma. Spoon nails which dip inwards could mean certain types of anaemia or injury. Pitted nails with punched-out spots may signal psoriasis. Maintain a youthful looking bust: Over-exposure to the sun will age your breasts prematurely, breaking down the elastin and collagen in yours kin and causing them to sag and produce brown age-spots. Always apply sunscreen whenever part of your breasts and chest will be exposed to the sun.

Dominique May Blenheim I prefer magazines to books, because they are a quicker read, and because magazines have good gossip in them.

“Bookworld is for the love of reading.” No ‘excuse’ Dear Ed, In this ever changing environment it is amazing how some businesses can let the almighty dollar rule at the expense of their brand. Can you imagine COKE or ROLLS ROYCE butchering their brand for a quick buck ? Marketing Graduate

Salmon - Cause and effect? Dear Ed, King Salmon will get their farms. They’ll never employ the numbers, nor make the money they claim. They’ll pay little tax, the profits will leave NZ, and nothing will “trickle down”. The mess when they leave will costthis region millions to clean up. So what? This is how the NZ system functions. Opposing organisations lack ability, structure, and ultimately, the courage for effective action. Consider how the disgraceful mess left behind in all logging areas has never been addressed.

Curiously, I see no quantifiable DOC or Greenpeace footprint in any of these issues. Apparently they’ve become instruments of the system. Taxation funded apologists for Governments, Councils, and the Enterprise. Communities need to understand the universal lesson of Cause and Effect,or learn to endure the consequence of gutless inaction and stunted intellect. One definition of stupidity is; doing the same thing repeatedly, and expecting different results. G. Jeffries. Kenepuru Sound.

Dear Ed, David Lloyd’s letter (April 13) encapsulated my growing unease over King Salmon’s plan to override the Marlborough Sounds District resource plan. My first discomfort was the company is “wholly owned” by the financially powerful Malaysian Tiong family, who have been described as “infamous” because of their track record of exploitation. The second was that in researching fish farming some years ago, a US scientist told me fish farming is a “capital intensive, high risk, marginally economic” venture. Further aggravating my unease was the recent EPA meeting in Blenheim on the submission process to a “board of enquiry.” It turned out the board is appointed by cabinet.

Bev Simpson Blenheim I don’t make the time for reading. But when I do get the chance I love to read history books.

Given previous fisheries minister, i.e. government, extolled aquaculture as NZ’s economic saviour, the emerging and lingering question is whether the whole procedure is prejudiced in favour of King Salmon? Since, as David Lloyd pointed out “the EPA ruling is final,” the whole judicial process appears suspect. This feeling is not surprising given other past examples such as government agency ERMA’s review’s which have been quite blatantly “kangaroo courts.” The King Salmon issue is a David versus Goliath situation with giant King Salmon, funded by a powerful global corporate, against the public interest. Also let’s not forget the Sounds and seabed are public space. Tony Orman

Mugabe illness Dear Ed, It is reported, that the butcher of Zimbabwe Mugabe - is gravely ill with prostate cancer. May I most humbly suggest, that a couple of sticks of dynamite up his backside would solve the problem !!! Yours, Kiwi Celt. Blenheim

“Take a look” at the real effects Dear Ed, I am not surprised by some comments of support that are now coming out in the press by well known people within our community touting King Salmon’s seemingly unblemished record. But we must look at this operation for what it is, and the real cumulative effects it may have had so far, and poses in the future. It is, and always has been just another form of concentrated food production. When this venture was first applied for 20 odd years ago, KS, along with our local council who allowed it to proceed, probably knew very little about the cumulative effects of growing large numbers of salmon in a confined space. Twenty five years on, things have changed, and it is very clear now that raising hundreds of thousands of salmon in a confined area has some major downsides. No less than land based poultry, or pork production. As KS are only monitoring the water space beneath the farm, and place no relevance at all to the effects of their operations outside in the wider marine environment, this seems to me to be hardly adequate, and brings into doubt their operational practices. Amazingly it seems KS have never published any independently vetted data that supports their claims of being a sustainable business. To preserve our reputation as a top primary producer, and retain the beauty, and integrity of Our Sounds we must do our best to work within natures boundaries for longterm sustainability. Both the dairy, and the viticulture industry both land based have recognised this, and have been improving their footprint, using measured transparent checking mechanisms. I would suggest KS can not do the same. David Lloyd Blenheim

Keep it Local

9

Here at The Sun we pride ourselves on supporting our local community. That’s why we’re running our ‘Keep it Local’ campaign once a month promoting locally owned businesses. The last year has been a challenging time for most businesses. There has never been a more important time to shop locally, putting your money back into your community. So support your local businesses and ‘Keep it Local’

CRB Transport

Radiator Services

Elite Tyres

One business which is proud to be owned and operated by local people is CRB Transport in Spring Creek. Owner Mike Gifford (Giffo) is a staunch supporter of the Marlborough community and says his business strives to employ and buy locally where possible. “If you don’t support your locals you won’t have them, this is something I have believed all my life,” he says. CRB Transport is Marlborough’s only 100 percent owned and operated specialist log carrier and has been providing service to the top of the south loggers since 2001. Believing in self sufficiency, CRB Transport has a full workshop with engineering facilities. “We use our own resources, therefore not needing to source out of town,” Mike says. With the growth of the forestry industry, CRB Transport has seen a positive increase in workload enabling it to expand its staff to 30. “There are more trees coming online for harvest so we are geared up and ready for when it happens,” he says. CRB Transport operates from its Blenheim base at Spring Creek and services contractors from Canterbury North to Blenheim, and from Nelson through to the West Coast. With a large modern fleet, CRB Transport has the experience and equipment to get your logs from the forest to the customer when you want.

When it comes to radiators and cooling systems, the team at Radiator Services can handle any job – big or small. Owned and managed by local man Tony Flood, Radiator Services has been proudly servicing the community for more than 30-years. Being 100 percent locally owned and operated, Tony says staff can offer expert servicing of anything from radiators and cooling systems through to associated parts and accessories. And now that winter is here, the Radiator Services team is encouraging motorists to call in and have their antifreeze checked and heaters repaired before the cold really sets in. By buying locally, Radiator Services can guarantee their customers receive the right advice on what they need. “There are a lot of people who purchase parts over the internet, thinking they are getting a cheaper price. “But in some cases the parts are wrong, don’t fit or require further work which will cost more in the long run,” he says. For the right advice, personal service and professional guarantee on all their services, call in and see the team at Radiator Services today.

One Blenheim family business that knows the importance of being locally owned and operated is Elite Tyre & Alignment. The father and son team, Dave and Brendan Gill operating at their Grove Road premises say a large portion of their business comes from customer referrals. “We have regular referrals from previous customers, some even from as far as Christchurch.” “Customers are often surprised at how quickly we have their vehicle ready. With over 50 years experience between us and over five years working together, we instinctively know exactly what the other is doing. “It brings people back and it’s this support that is making our business a success,” Dave says. Being an independent tyre business with no franchise fees and restrictions, Elite Tyre & Alignment can source any brand and quantity of tyre. “We have one of the widest ranges so we can source the right tyre to fit the driver and the vehicle,” Brendan says. Their services include new and used tyres, tyre repair, wheel balance, computerized wheel alignment on car, 4x4, and commercial vehicles as well as stocking a range of Exide batteries and offering free battery and tyre pressure checks.

Memories of war World War Two veteran Ivan Gibbons speaks to Robbie Parkes At 21 years of age, Ivan Gibbons, along with a lot of other New Zealanders were only young men and women when they headed overseas to fight for their country. “I joined up when I was 18 but they told me I was too young.” He worked in the building trade and they needed the manpower to do the defence work, by the time he was 21, Ivan would head to Italy. A Private in the 26th Infantry Battalion, the boy from Canvastown entered World War Two with a contingent of fellow Southerners. “There was a mixture,” he said, “a lot of friends.” “We were only kids when we were there.” Laxon Brown was one of those mates Ivan left home with. “He’s a Blenheim boy.” “We worked together as carpenters.” The pair were inseparable, if one was going to be transferred then the other would have to go too, Ivan said. “We shared the same hut, enlisted the same day and went away together.” Both headed for foreign shores and fought their first fight at Sangro River and then moved onto the Battle of Monte Cassino. Ivan and Laxon fought at Cassino in 1944, a costly fight immortalised in a photograph of a half destroyed nunnery. “This was what we were trying to get through [the nunnery] to try to get the Germans out,” he said. But, for Ivan and Laxon, the war ended early at Cassino. Ivan got a burst of machine-gun fire through his mid-drift, a wound that put him out of the war, but Laxon was a fatality. “I got wounded one day and he got killed three days after.” “It knocked me.” “I didn’t have a brother, and he and I saw each other as brothers.” He said the main thing about his service was the camaraderie, something obvious when he woke up in the hospital. “When I came to, I found someone sitting by my bed, a guy called Faulkner,” said Ivan. “He sent telegraphs back home to mum to let her know what was going on.” “He was wonderful to me,” he said. “We kept very close touch.” They were friends right up until his death. “You never forget those chaps or those experiences.” Ivan was virtually paralyzed from his wound and was told he would never walk again, something he has proved wrong ever since he stepped off the Wanganella in Picton in 1944. He returned to Italy in 1994, 50 years after Cas- Mayor put on a special luncheon for the sino, along with his son Phillip (then a Major) who veterans and gave them each a bottle of wine, a gift that Ivan has kept unopened lead the New Zealand contingent. They visited the village of Orsogna, where the since he got it.

Ivan visited the village of Orsogna, where the Mayor put on a special luncheon for the veterans and gave them each a bottle of wine, which Ivan still has. He visited Laxon’s grave, laying a wreath for his fallen comrade. Ivan goes to Anzac day every year and has led the parade in the past.

This Anzac day the 90 year old will parade with his son Phillip, now a retired Brigadier. “It does mean a lot.”

ANZAC Day

National commemoration ANZAC Day occurs on April 25 and commemorates all New Zealanders killed in war as well as honouring returned servicemen and women. The date itself marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers, the ANZACS on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. The aim was to capture the Dardanelles, the gateway to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. At the end of the campaign, Gallipoli was still held by its Turkish defenders. Among those who lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign were 2721 New Zealanders, almost one in four

of those who served on Gallipoli. It may have led to a military defeat, but for many New Zealanders then and since, the Gallipoli landings meant the beginning of something else, a feeling that New Zealand had a role as a distinct nation, even as it fought on the other side of the world in the name of the British Empire. ANZAC Day was first marked in 1916. The day has gone through many changes since then. The ceremonies that are held at war memorials up and down New Zealand, or in places overseas where New Zealanders gather, remain rich in tradition and ritual befitting a military funeral.

Ensuring your electric blankets are fault-free before using them will help protect your family this winter.

It is everyone’s aim to keep warm through winter and however you decide to heat your home, it’s important to remember that there are always risks and safety hazards involved. Here are some helpful tips on how to keep you and your family safe this winter when heating your home. Matches and lighters: Kids are very observant so when you have finished using matches and lighters, put them up and out of sight, away from little fingers. If your children do find them laying around, teach them to hand them to an adult straight away. Electric blankets: When pulling out of the storage cupboard, check first for frayed cords and other damage. Have it checked by a service person. Remember to turn off your electric blankets at the wall before getting into bed. Gas cabinet heaters:

Don’t use in a confined space, use in a ventilated area. Keep objects and clothing at least 1m away. Store and install gas cylinders in an upright position. When changing cylinders make sure the valve on the empty cylinder is turned off before disconnecting. Check the full cylinder is securely connected before turning on. Smoke Alarms: Dust and spider webs can affect smoke alarms. Clean with the vacuum cleaner once a month and while doing so, test the alarm by pushing the test button. Batteries must be changed once a year, ideally on an easy to remember date (such as New Year’s day, daylight saving or a family member’s birthday). All smoke alarms will sound a short ‘beep’ as the battery goes flat - take note and change the battery as soon as possible.

Caravans and Sleepouts More and more New Zealanders are using caravans and sleepouts as extra sleeping and living areas. The fire danger in these is much higher than in a home. For lighting, use proper lighting units or torches. Do not use candles as they are too dangerous. Used fixed heaters only and make sure furniture and fittings are at least one metre from the heater. Fan heaters with a cut off switch are the safest. Fit a smoke alarm and test once a week. Velcro the alarm to the ceiling so it can be removed when cooking. Make sure gas and electrical appliances are turned off before going to bed. Discard cigarette butts into a metal container or ashtray and never smoke in bed. Have a fire extinguisher or fire blanket near the exit and make sure you know how to use it.

WARMTH 2012

Smoke detectors for hearing impaired

Smoke alarms are essential to saving lives but for those who are hearing impaired they could easily sleep through a house fire. Luckily there are options for getting a deaf and hearing impaired smoke alarm installed. There are smoke alarms available with extra loud alarms, flash-

ing lights or vibrating devices for people with hearing loss. To be effective, an installed smoke alarm must be operating properly, audible through closed doors and able to detect smoke from all types of fires. The ideal solution would be to have interconnected photoelec-

tric smoke alarms fitted with bed-shakers, strobe lights, pagers or a combination of all of these but the costs may be prohibitive. That is why there is funding available through the Ministry of Health. The Ministry, through its Equipment and Modification

Services, provides funding for visual or vibrating alert systems to support people who are Deaf or who have significant hearing loss to live safely in their homes. Accessable and Enable New Zealand, who provide these services on the Ministry’s behalf, have worked with key sector

groups, including the New Zealand Fire Service, to consider the most appropriate options for funding. For more information you can freephone Accessable on 0508 001 002 or Enable New Zealand on 0800 171 981.

Check your heat sources Wood fires: Check all bricks, baffles (steel or ceramic plate that goes in the fire above the flame), air tubes, door seals etc and replace if needed. Have your flue cleaned and chimney swept at the beginning of winter. Order next season’s wood as early as possible. This way it will be dry and you won’t be caught out if you need the fire earlier than predicted. Pellet fires: Check the fire pot has been emptied. Give the fire box a good clean with the vacuum. Make sure the pellets in the Having your chimney swept before winter will improve the safety and efficiency of your fire. hopper are dry.

Have your fire regularly serviced. Gas fires: The fires need to be serviced every two years by a certified gas technician to keep them in good working order. With the electronic models, the flame rods and pilot assemblies may need to be replaced every three to five years. Safe collection of ash: Never empty ash into a plastic bucket, even if the fire has been out for several days. There have been many house fires, where there are still hot embers in the ash and it has melted the bucket and set fire

to the house. Leave the ashes to cool for several days before disposal. General Safety In any home at any time, there’s the potential for fire. Two very important things should be installed in your home as a safety measure - smoke alarms (for the kitchen, living area and every bedroom) and fire extinguishers (one in the kitchen and one elsewhere, also great for the boot of the car). Read the installation instructions carefully and check them regularly so make sure that you get the most protection from these products.

McIlroy wins The Blenheim Pigeon club raced from Christchurch on Saturday a distance of 250km, this proved to be a tough fly for the youngbirds. Weather conditions in Christchurch were good, however during the fly the birds encountered low cloud and drizzle somewhere near Cheviot. Only three birds made it home on race day, young James McIlroy winning his first race. James’s bird was two hours in front of the second bird

owned by Joan Webb and a further half hour to Don Morrison bird. The first bird covered the distance in 5 hours, 24 minutes and 48 sec.

Results: 1st James McIlory, 2; J Webb, 3rd Morrins Hollow, 4th S Morrison (On Sunday at 9am), 5th S Kirkwood, 6th A Cooper, (Tumbledown and C Kirkwood No birds home in race time). Returns were poor for most flyers.

NOTE: Last week Shirley Morrison won her first youngbird flock race for sometime, to cap off a great fly Shirley landed four birds together.

House prices rising The Real Estate Institute has released figures that show the housing market is on the rise, with prices and volumes hitting record highs. The Institute said the national housing market grew strongly in March and the

median house price was up $5000 to a new record of $370,000. The median price for houses in the Nelson and Marlborough region for the past year has grown by $1500 to $330,500.

Clinic gets donation Wairau Hospital’s chemo clinic recieved a number of items as part of a donation from the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust today. Valued at $750, the items include an iPod and docking station, iTunes vouchers and new magazine subscriptions. The donation comes from fundraising efforts of the Trust in 2011, which exceeded $10,000. A donation will also be made to the chemo clinic in at Nelson Hospital in the next few weeks.

Young athletes breaking records By Robbie Parkes Three young athletes from Marlborough Children’s Athletics have broken records going back as far as 32 years. Jake Southey, Kyla Otway and Oliver Lawson have each clinched records at away events throughout February, March and April. Jake broke the 32 year old record for the 12 year boys 400m at the Interprovincials in Auckland in April. He ran 58.93, beating the previous record of 59.6, set in 1980.

He also competed in the Tasman versus Canterbury Meet in Richmond in March, where he equalled the high jump record of 1.63m set 11 years ago. Kyla broke the 8 year old girls record for shot put at the Meet, throwing 7.17m and breaking a 22 year old record. Oliver also broke the 400m record for 9 year old boys, running 1.12.0, breaking a one year old record well known to Kyla. “He broke it off my brother,” she said. “He also broke a shot put record, threw

9.44,” said Nicki Lawson, Oliver’s mum and club secretary. He broke that record at the Tasman Champs in February, again one set 25 years ago. Nicki said the kids go to most of the away events and the club encourages that. “It’s a good way to get a challenge for a lot of them,” she said. “As parents and as a club we’re very proud.” All three athletes have their own favourite events and a lot of ambition. “I like the 400 metres, long jump, discus,

shot put and 200,” said Oliver. Kyla also said shot put is her favourite at the moment becuase Jake keeps beating her at discus. Jake said what he enjoys most about competing is winning, but all three said it is fun meeting new people and competing with their friends. Their season finished a couple of weeks ago, but each have their own ambition to make it to the Olympics one day. “I’m going next year according to my grandad,” said Jake. Photos page 18.

Top first up effort for skater

Sam McDonald pictured earlier this year competing.

By Annabelle Latz Inline skater Sam McDonald was very pleased with last week’s effort at the Oceania International Championship in Timaru last week. The 14 year-old National Champion from Queen Charlotte College was the only Marlborough representative. He was the second-youngest competitor, up against 15 year old to 19 year-old skaters from Australia, Indonesia and New Zealand. There are also competitors from Singapore, and Timaru-based German competitors, but not in his junior grade. On Easter Sunday he achieved a personal best time for his 300m time trial, with 29.104 seconds, beating his previous best time of 30.853. He finished 14th out of 18 skaters. Sam’s 500m heat time was also a personal

best with a time of 47.75 seconds, compared to his previous best time of 51.8 seconds. Last Thursday he raced his first marathon distance, 42km. Although he was not placed, he was very happy. “About half way through everything was burning, I wanted to give up. But I told myself to continue, to keep going on.” But after three laps of extreme discomfort, he got through the pain barrier. “That was the break I needed.” It took him 1hour 19 minutes, over the 2.4km track. “I kept the pace up, and kept passing people, and finished strong with a sprint. I even wasted a couple of Aussies, that was good!” Sam will take a well earned break from racing over the winter, but continue his training for next season.
