People are not giving up yet

By Annabelle Latz Does plain packaging on tobacco packets mean people will stop buying cigarettes? Caltex owner Grant Stubbs says no, but he hopes it will prevent the younger generations from smoking. “But from what I can see, people are not giving up just yet.” This week it was announced the Cabinet had agreed to introduce plain cigarette packaging, part of a bid to have New Zealand smokefree by 2025. Grant said soon cigarette packets will no longer be on display behind his counter, and no advertising banners will be visible. The Health Ministry has also discussed

raising the price of cigarettes to $100 over the next eight years. By next year cigarettes could cost $60, then increase 10% a year, making the cost of a pack $100 by 2020. “My biggest concern is not the loss in the volume of the cigarettes sold, but the increased risk for theft and hold ups.” He said he will keep a lot less in stock, and have more security measures. “I will send a message out there to potential thieves there is nothing here.” Grant said the money going over the counter for cigarette purchases has not changed during recent years, despite prices going up. Forgotten army - no longer

By Robbie Parkes A lot of stories from the war have been told over and over again, but the story of Jayforce in Japan has been muzzled for years. “We got called the forgotten army,” said Ron Laird, Private and double bass player in the 9th Brigade Band that went there in 1946. Ron was one of 35 Bandsmen in the British Commonwealth Occupation Force sent to Japan. He was too young to go in wartime, but the age of consent was dropped to 20 and eager young men could still go. “There was nobody left in New Zealand that wasn’t overseas.” The 14th and 15th regiments of the New Zealand force at Monte Cassino were sent along with the 9th to Japan. “With what broken down equipment they had,” said Ron. “We got trained soldiers who had been in the army for a year or so but poorly equipped.” Conditions were bad, and those there soon knew it was not going to get better.

weekend car crash

For their first month they lived in a building with no roof and had one blanket between them. “We didn’t get any beds for a month.” He said they had to scrounge whatever food they could. “No soap, milk, butter, bread, it just didn’t exist.” “We didn’t dare drink the water.” “Problems developed every day.” There was little medical care and men still died, even after the war was over. “Bloody awful,” said Ron. They were stationed not far from Hiroshima at one stage, and a number of the 9th who were there have since died from cancer. “They slowly died over the years.” For the first 30 years after returning home, the 9th were never recognised by the RSA as having served and they were not eligible for war pensions. “We were called the troops who went on holiday.” “I just think it’s a story that should be told,” says Ron.”

A 17-year-old remained in a serious condition in intensive care at Wellington Hospital this week, after being injured in a car crash near Renwick on Friday afternoon. The teenager suffered life-threatening head injuries on Friday when the Toyota Starlet he was driving and a campervan collided at the intersection of Rapaura Rd and State Highway 6 about 1pm, police say. He was the only person in the car. On Saturday, the Renwick end of Rapaura Rd was the scene of another crash, between a car and a motor-scooter.

Support for Poppy Day

Sharyn Montgomery and Neil Almon were well supported on Poppy Day last Friday in Blenheim.

Photo and story by Annabelle Latz People always dig deep on Poppy Day, and last Friday was no exception. About 40 volunteers from around the community spent a few hours selling the iconic ANZAC symbols. Mike McCann has taken part in Poppy Day collection for three years. He said it is a day all New Zealanders get behind. “The young ones come up too, which is great to see.” He was a chef with the Royal New Zealand Air Force for 27 years. “It was the most marvellous time, I would do it all over again.” Sharyn Montgomery and Neil Almon said less poppies were selling this year, compared

to last year, when the Air Show was on which brought more people to town. But they were still pleased with Friday’s response. “This is about supporting the local RSA, and supporting Marlborough,” said Neil. Vice President of the Marlborough RSA Peter Slape said the response was great, considering the economic climate at the moment. “Because of the current situation, there are less people out shopping, but the amounts people were paying for one poppy was quite astounding.” He was looking forward to today’s ANZAC celebrations. “The weather looks like it’s going to be good, it should be a great day.”

rescue at punga cove Last Saturday at 4:15pm the Life Flight Westpac Rescue Helicopter was sent to a report of a car over a bank near Punga Cove in the Marlborough Sounds. The car was located down a small bank on Titirangi Road near Punga Cove. A paramedic was winched to the scene and found a 25 year old German tourist with minor injuries after his car lost control and went down the bank. A local resident drove the paramedic and patient to the helicopter which had landed a short distance away. The man was flown to Wairau Hospital in Blenheim where he was treated and later released.

DOC AND AIR NEW ZEALAND WORK TOGETHER Department of Conservation (DOC) and Air New Zealand are now working together to protect and promote New Zealand’s unique wildlife and special landscapes. The partnership, announced last Friday, means Air New Zealand will fly endangered species to new breeding sites around the country and invest directly in conservation programmes alongside the Great Walks network. In addition, the airline will use its global marketing network to help DOC promote the Great Walks on both the domestic and international tourism markets. The partnership between Air New Zealand and DOC is worth about $1 million annually for three years.

RED CROSS GRANT The New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Commission has confirmed a new grant, to help some of the most vulnerable people affected by the Canterbury earthquakes. The Disability Support Grant is for people with disabilities and their careers, whose quality of life has been adversely affected by damage to infrastructure and reduced access to services. The cash grant is for $750 and can be used for respite care, transport, recreation or simply a break out of Christchurch.

NO AMALGAMATION FOR N E L SO N AN D TA SMAN COUNCILS The bid to amalgamate Nelson and Tasman councils has failed. Nelson was more supportive of the idea than Tasman. It needed a 50% support in each polling area of Nelson and Tasman. But preliminary results showed a 56.69% support base in Nelson, and a 74.31% opposition base in Tasman.

Packaging is not the solution CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1. He said 20% of his revenue is from cigarette sales, so is not significantly high. “Smokers still spend their budget for cigarettes, they may just buy less or lower quality.” Grant would like to see New Zealand smokefree. He lost his brother to lung cancer two years’ ago, who was a chain smoker.

“I reckon it’s a good thing our Government is doing. People who smoke often don’t want to, but it’s an addictive habit.” Alan Malcomson, General Manager of Retail for Foodstuffs, which has the brands New World, Four Square, and Pak n’ Save, said it will be a ‘wait and see game’ if the cigarette sale volumes decrease with the new packaging laws. “It’s just the lay of the land, we will have

to abide by it.” He said security measures around cigarettes have been an issue for years, and will be reassessed accordingly. Prime Minister John Key said this week no free trade agreement has been signed that would stop the sale of plain packaged cigarettes. Legislation will be introduced after public consultation.

Answer urgently needed By Annabelle Latz Don Zimmerman (right) is still waiting for an answer from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. He received a letter from them last week, informing him of a three to six month wait to see a Urologist in relation to surgery he needs, and that his case was ‘an urgent priority.’ He was baffled, as he thought ‘urgent’ meant ‘immediately.’ Don featured in The Sun last Friday, and he was hopeful it might arouse a response from the Health Board. But he is still waiting. “I haven’t heard a word form them, they have been extremely quiet. I feel disgusted; I

thought I might have heard from them.” He wants the Health Board to explain to

him what ‘urgent priority’ means, and if he can be seen sooner. Don needs surgery to relieve him of the catheter he has been confined to for more than a month now, before he can get the much needed shoulder surgery from an accident 12 months ago. “It’s just an awkward situation.” He is in pain every day. “When you are sitting alone on your own, you haven’t got a lot of power behind you.” Don went to the market in Blenheim on Saturday, after he featured in The Sun, and said he received lots of support from friends there. “Everyone agreed it’s about time there was a bit of a shake up.”

Queen St park could be dropped The pocket park planned for Queen St may be dropped by the Council if public support justified that. A council assets and services committee meeting on Thursday will consider a report from Council parks and reserves staff about the work. The dropping of the project would save $700,000.

Church has to wait but not too long

Police inbrief

By Annabelle Latz

The Methodist Church in Tua Marina will be on the move, but not just yet. It was supposed to be shifted to Brayshaw Heritage Park at the beginning of the month, but systems were held up as further discussions took place around the exact location for the church. The location has now been decided between the Marlborough Historical Society and the Brayshaw Heritage Park Administrators Group. The iconic church, built in 1875, will be going to the site originally penciled; between the museum and the caretak-

Arrests, disorderly behaviour and thefts Fifteen arrests were made over the weekend, ranging from disorderly behaviour, to theft, to possession of cannabis. At 1pm on Friday there was a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of SH6 and Rapaura Rd. The driver of a car collided with a campervan after failing to give way and was taken to Wairau Hospital with head injuries. A lazer disco light and two laptops were stolen from a Hutcheson St address on Saturday night. At 5.25pm on Monday, a 32 year old woman was arrested for assault after allegedly pushing a court employee at the Blenheim District Court. She has been bailed and will appear in court on April 30th. At 6pm on Monday a 40 year old man was arrested for trespassing at The Warehouse after being previously warned. At 03:00am yesterday the Life Flight Trust responded to a patient on Arapawa Island near Tory Channel in the Marlborough Sounds. The patient a 69yr old male was flown to Wairau (Blenheim) Hospital Emergency Department for further assessment and treatment.

ers cottage, by the path that leads to the railway station. Errol Morrison, whose great grandfather John Botham was involved in the church when it was first built, is happy a decision has finally been made. Coffey House Removals will be moving the church, but due to current projects on at the moment for the company, the church will have to wait two to three months. “We just want it to be moved now. It was all ready to be shifted until we had the halt put on it, but that’s life I guess.” Errol Morrison and Basil Parkes at the Methodist Church at Tua Marina.

Books and Bubbles brings popular talent By Robbie Parkes Paper Plus Blenheim is expecting a night full of fun and entertainment when Books & Bubbles rolls round this Friday night. “It’s an absolute scream,” said manager Karen Gibb. “It’s definitely a fun filled night.” “Books and Bubbles is the perfect excuse to come together with your friends and get to know some of the country’s best authors and most interesting personalities,” she said. book Beautiful You. Jenny is a best-selling author and well-known jeweller with roles in various arts committees and institutes and a number of books under her belt. Haley brings a bit of local flavour to the group, writing a number of children’s books inspired by the high country life in the Awatere Valley. Karen said that each of the guests will talk about their books and share a few stories. This is the first time the event has come to Paper Plus Blenheim, but Karen, having already gone to a Books & Bubbles with emcee

Kerre, said the night will be amazing. “She’s very entertaining.” Kerre has written two books herself and has become a well-known Kiwi personality through a long career in radio, print and television. Tickets are $15 and $5 from each one sold goes to Cure Kids, and Karen said they are going fast. She said people will be greeted with a glass of bubbles and canapes as they enter the shop. A $250 Verge clothing voucher and a $250 Mondo Travel voucher will be up for grabs on the night with a number of spot prizes going too. The event starts at 6pm.

Sun readers have their say... Q: What are your thoughts on the King Salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds?

Yolande McIntyre Blenheim I think it’s good revenue, but I also think that they really need to make sure they’re doing it for the right reasons and that they are 100% sure it will work out.

Wil Parsons Blenheim I have mixed feelings, we need to know more facts about how it could affect our environment before we start making plans to go ahead with it.

Lois Roadley Blenheim I think it is a good thing, it means more revenue to Marlborough. I have trust that the Salmon farmers are responsible and I believe that they will keep it clean and green.

Aleeze Tombs Blenheim I’m not against it, as long as it has strict regulations so that it stays clean and doesn’t harm the environment.

“Bookworld is for the love of reading.”

35 year lease too long

Owen Keenan Blenheim I am not against it, but I am against them putting the farms in front of peoples homes and baches. They should really look at where they are going, so that the peace isn’t disturbed for the locals.

Letters to the editor

Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show Dear Ed, good faith, even if a nom de plume is No wonder the Sounds people are upset. If the Salmon Farms get their way there will be provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to extra pollution. All for the big buck. It wouldn’t be so bad but they are asking for a 35 year lease that’s just dreadful. Vote to save the Sounds before it’s too late. K.M.Warren Dear Ed, Why are the existing sports stores so worried about the arrival of Rebel Sports in Blenheim? Perhaps it could be they’ve gotten away with charging whatever they like Dear Ed, over the years. Over a year ago now I got a parking ticket at the I am from Dunedin where over the Railway Station for parking there for more than years I was a member of 4 golf clubs 30 minutes as the signs, that I didn’t see, state. in the area. abridge letters or withhold unsuitable letters from publication. Send or fax them to the address on page two, or e mail them to news@blenheimsun.co.nz. Please note that your name and street address must also be provided in e mails.

Never before in my 20 years of restoring a part of the Sounds, have I experienced so many emotions around the subject. Discussions, meetings and media etc, it all adds to make a decision either to be in favour or to be against it. I feel, if the proposals are going ahead, the future of our Sounds will change forever. Giving up the protected areas for more industrialisation would be the last blow for the already-stressed Sounds environment. Jobs and money seem to be the motivation. Hard to explain later to our young people when their heritage is lost. It is inspiring to see so many people picking up the fight to defend the Sounds. They spend days and days of their time, sometimes even in the small hours of the night. Effecting family lives etc etc, and all for free.

Yes, no financial gain for them! Sometimes it is a bit frustrating to hear that THOSE people are the ones “blocking income for our community”, by defending the last remains of the Sounds, without any personal benefits what-so-ever. The sad thing is that our next generation is here to witness the result of our decisions today. There is no doubt that if the Sounds are not profitable anymore for the industry, (due to the resulting damage of the environment to sustain these industries) those big-dollar companies will leave us and look for other areas, taking their jobs and income away and leaving us with some explaining to do to our children. My daughter told me this morning - “Why does your generation believe all that matters is to provide income? Without taking care of our environment or facing up to the consequences that will follow?” Brian Plaisier. Tui Nature Reserve

Why worry?

Parking ticket

Shirley Offord Blenheim I think we need to question how much waste will end up going into our water and the problems that it may cause in the long run. We call ourselves a clean and green country, and so we need to stick to that.

excellent, their staff being obliging and knowledgeable. And for golfers a free period by a professional coach once a month. I had occasion to want new grips on my golf clubs. The price in Blenheim was ridiculous, so I had them done in Christchurch at a sensible price. Competition is what we need in businesses. J.M.Bloy

We need to complain more Dear Ed, Myra Giese is correct when she says we older folk do not complain enough (The Sun, Friday 20th April). I had occasion to speak to a supermarket duty manager mid-afternoon last week after five young people charged their way into the supermarket on scooters. Their parents were with them, it was mid-afternoon and I knew there was a vision impaired person in the supermarket at the time as well as others with walking sticks and mobility aids. Dear Ed, Come on, Eric Barratt of Sandfords, who wants to farm trout? What planet are you from? Sandfords have ransacked kahawai with purse seining. Far out! A chap has a job to catch a kahawai now, when it used to be you could catch a feed no trouble. Does Barratt know about trout farming or is it that Sandford’s are running out of fish to catch in the sea? With all the yakka about sustainability, Sandfords is just greedy. Trout farming will be bad for NZ’s esteemed trout fishery. Poaching (the good old Kiwi bloke is good at this. Look at deer, paua and crayfish), disease in crammed cages, algae blooms and besides I’ve been told from people who tried farmed trout overseas, it’s yuk. NZ’s trout fishery earns millions now from tourists. And I ‘google’ and found trout fishing generates $70 million a year with related spending. What will trout farming earn? Neil Wilson

New tap school opens By Robbie Parkes Rachel Aitkin has been performing for over 35 years, whether it be singing, dancing or acting, she has done it, and now she wants to share a little of that passion with the next generation. Rachel will be running the Rachel Aitken School of Tap out of one of the Marlborough Dance Centres studios from next Monday. “I wanted to share my passion with up and coming students,” she said. “I really quite like teaching children and seeing the end result.” The classes are aimed at

students aged 5 and upwards and will include beginners group tap classes as well as one-on-one private lessons. “It’s really good confidence for them, good co-ordination and they also make new friends.” She will do private lessons with students looking to enter competitions, which she said has a lot of benefits for her personally. “That’s really special, when they’ve won something and you’re getting them there.” She will even be taking adult tap classes. A trained tap dancer and performer, Rachel was born

and raised in Blenheim, performing in local shows from a young age. “I first appeared on stage when I was 4.” “When I was 5, I started tap dancing with Jeannie Mark in her father’s garage.” She performed locally for a number of years, playing the likes of Erma in Anything Goes in 1994, and choreographing Stepping Out, a stage show about tap dancing at the Boathouse Theatre. Rachel even ran a tap dance school back in 1994 until she moved to Christchurch to pursue a career in the airline industry as a flight attendant.

It is only recently that she has undertaken her first lead role ever as Mrs. Johnstone in the musical Blood Brothers in Canterbury. As well as starting her own dancing school, Rachel is one of the finalists in the Blenheim Stars in Your Eyes competition. She will be performing as Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago, on Friday the 8th of June at the Marlborough Convention Centre and is also auditioning for Marlborough’s Top Talent contest. Why families choose home based childcare Asked why families choose home based care for their young children, Step 2 Growth owner and educator Angela Eaton says some reasons include an educator’s flexibility with hours and their ability to provide similar routines to those followed by the families. “There are many other fantastic reasons to choose home based childcare, but in my personal experience my families enjoy the fact that I can do pick ups and drop offs to kindergarten to help make it easier on parents. “Having the children in a close little group one on one time is easier and the kids not only form a strong bond with me, but with one another as well which makes them feel secure and safe,” she says. Wise decision to move For plumbing apprentice Hayden George, the move south to study the Certificate in Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying proved to be a wise decision. He made the decision to relocate from Dunedin after tossing up between several courses. “After having a look around, I wanted here or Christchurch, but Christchurch shut down and here it was Zero Fees.” Hayden was surprised with the way the course was run, finding it exceeded his expectations. “I thought it would be like school, but we had three

days a week in class and work experience the other two days. It was nothing like what I thought it’d be.” The practical side of the course was offset with theoretical studies, providing a good balance. “The course was about 60% practical and 40% class. I found it a lot more hands-on learning than school.” Highlights for Hayden included the range of practical work undertaken. “I liked doing all the welding, joining, putting pipes up and erecting water cylinders.” After completing the course Hayden returned to Dunedin. He undertook more work ex-

perience with the Chamber of Commerce, using his experience to gain an interview with a local plumbing firm. “I went there for 2 weeks. A year later they offered me an apprenticeship.” Hayden was appreciative of the experience the pre-trade course gave him. “It gave me an advantage – with doing pre-trade I had way more knowledge than a person walking in off the street. I found I learnt a lot more by doing pre-trade before going into an apprenticeship.” Contact Southern Institute of Technology on 0800 4 0 FEES or visit the website at www.sit.co.nz

Steps to career planning When completing their secondary education or returning to study, some people have a level of uncertainty of what career they wish to follow. Here are three easy steps to help people of all ages identify where their interests lie, and to develop a career plan. Step One: Figure out where your career interests are by asking yourself the following. -What are my interests? -What do I do well and enjoy? -What kind of personality do I have? -What’s really important to me? -What are my values? Take any career-related tests that your college’s career centre might

offer which may also assist. Step Two: Learn about your career options. See if your college’s career office has a library of books describing the many industries and types of work available. These may also identify the qualifications needed and the salary ranges for various occupations. Step Three: Sort out your priorities for a career. At this stage some of your strong preferences may start to emerge. You may have learnt that you don’t want to be in an office environment, or you may have crossed off those types of jobs where you are outdoors all year round.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk When it comes to duck hunting, there are four local men who are in-the-know when it comes to skillfully attracting ducks and shooting them. Marlborough Hunting and Fishing owner Don Hansen, along with his staff Ollie, Euan, Fraser and Wills are all geared up and ready for the approaching duck shooting season. Between them Don says they have more than 100 years experience in duck shooting, and can point hunters in the right direction when it comes to equipment, hunting skills and gun knowledge. For those preparing themselves for the season, Marlborough Hunting and Fishing has a huge range of decoys in-store, some so realistic you would think you were looking at the real thing. Another hot product in-store is their AmpliFire Electronic Waterfowl Caller. In addition to decoys and callers, there is a range of your basic duck hunting needs including camouflage netting, seats, motion decoys, shotguns plus much more. “We encourage people to come in-store and speak to one of us. We can share our knowledge and advise on the best products for all hunting requirements,” Don says.

By Robbie Parkes The Department of Conservation may not play a huge role in duck shooting season, but they have a few reminders for those on the hunt. Malcolm Brennan, programme manager at the DOC South Marlborough area office said hunters should be careful about the spread of Didymo. “We want to remind hunters about Didymo and biosecurity.” He said especially for hunters moving from lake to lake and through the rivers, the spread of the algae needs to be controlled. Washing waders and boats and keeping them clean and dry is vital to preventing the spread. He said that applies to the wetlands

more than other places, but a lot of the waterweeds in the hunting rivers are a concern too. Another issue that does come up over duck hunting season is the use of mai mais and hunters claims on spots. Mai mais are typically little structures set up by hunters to hunt from, and Malcolm said it can get a bit tough when shooters stake a prime spot one year and claim it again the next. “That does cause some angst amongst hunters.” He said Fish & Game control those issues, but problems still arise for anyone involved. Malcolm said DOC do have quite a minimal role during the season but wishes the hunters all the best.

What is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese technique for st r ess r e duct ion a nd relaxation that also promotes healing. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words, Rei which means ‘God’s Wisdom’ or the ‘Higher Power’, and Ki which is ‘life force energy’. So Reiki is actually ‘spiritually guided life force energy’. It is administered by ‘laying on hands’ and is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s life force energy is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress and if it is high we are more capable of being happy and healthy. For more information about Reiki or to find a therapist who offers this service, visit the Marlborough health therapists Open Day in Renwick this Saturday from 10am – 4pm.

Injury hampers world domination

. . . o t n w o d t Ge

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim taekwondo talent Braedon O’Brien (right) has returned from Egypt’s Junior World Championship at the beginning of April, perhaps not victorious as he hoped but a little wiser he says. Braedon was part of the Taekwondo New Zealand (TNZ) team representing the country, and was bestowed with the honour of being flag bearer in the opening ceremony. In the lead up to the championship Braedon suffered an injury to his leg during training which proved to be a hurdle when facing a Croatian fighter as his first fight in the 68-73kg division. “I lost the fight which meant I was immediately out of the tournament. He was a good fighter though and went on to knock out his next opponent and win fourth place in the division,” he says. Despite sitting on the sideline, Braedon says the experience he gained was invaluable and was ranked between 16 and 29 in the world for his division. “Being selected for the team was reward enough, I was the only South Island person to go and still keep my title as number one in NZ for my division, so I think the experience will prepare me for future tournaments,” he says.

Golf for ex-serviceman By Annabelle Latz A weekend of golfing and chatting about the service days took place recently for a group of Marlburian ex-servicemen. At the end of last month, 11 men travelled to Burnham Military Camp, near Christchurch, to take part in the 30th annual South Island Ex Servicemen Golf Tournament. To take part in the event, each participant must have a regimental number, and includes personnel from WWII, to current

I’m not a golfer, but I still won a box of balls!” said Dave Oliver, who helped to organise the competition. The tournament was introduced as an annual event to raise funds for the Army Museum in Wairau. Dave said buying raffles was a huge part of the event, and this Last weekends Blenheim Pigeon club race was f lown from Christchurch, a race distance of 253.86km. Weekend to remember for Hatton at V8’s By Robbie Parkes It may have been a sad day for V8 fans everywhere, but for Chris Hatton, the last ITM Hamilton 400 V8 Supercars Championship on the weekend was one to remember. Blenheim born Chris, placed 7th out of a possible 35 cars in the GT1 class, driving his trusty 700hp Camaro Transam. “We went really, really well.” “It’s been a busy weekend.” Chris placed 13th out of 38 cars in qualifications, but soon found out the track, despite good conditions, was rougher than they expected. “The road surface was so hard, I was bouncing on my seat.” He said the car was not quite set up for the Hamilton road surface, causing his brakes to overheat in a couple of the races. Chris and his team adjusted the car a number of times, putting in softer springs, changing the cooling system and shock absorbers to accommodate the track. With each new adjustment, the car got better and by the end of it Chris Chris Hatton in his 700hp Camaro Transam getting ready to race in the ITM Hamilton said he was 7 seconds faster than his 400 V8 Supercars Championship on the weekend. qualifying time. “These guys are the professional driv“It’s done me a lot of good, it’s really “For me, coming in 7th place is a mas- ers.” boosted my confidence.” sive achievement.” After competing in Hamilton for the But he said to end the competition in He said competing against the big boys past three Championships, Chris said that Hamilton was a bit of a shame. was a highlight, especially when his this weekend was the best of them all. Dame arrives to support Megan

Dame Susan Devoy congratulates Blenheim squash player Megan Craig on a successful fundraising auction/dinner held last night.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim woman Megan Craig’s determination to become a top ranked women’s squash player is impressive, says one of New Zealand’s most successful sporting champions Dame Susan Devoy. Susan arrived in Blenheim yesterday afternoon to star as guest speaker at a fundraising auction/dinner organised by Megan last night at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Prior to the dinner Susan spoke with the Sun about Megan’s squash career. “Megan reminds me of myself, she laughs. “She has an unbridled enthusiasm and doesn’t allow anything to stand in her way of achieving her goals, so I am really pleased to be here supporting her,” she says. Susan recalls the first time she met Megan. “I can remember coming to visit Blenheim and Megan’s mother contacted me asking if I could meet with Megan. “She was about 11-years of age and showing a lot of promise with her squash playing, and from then we formed a friendship,” Susan says. Local support for the auction/dinner was ‘incredible’ says Megan, who managed to sell 240 tickets.
