Former councillor sides with Arbuckle By Damian George Former Marlborough District councillor Andrew Barker says the local community has a right to ask questions of an independent commissioner or the Ombudsman about claims of wrongdoings within Marlborough District Council. Current councillor Jamie Arbuckle issued a media statement on Monday saying he did not agree with the idea of appointing commissioner

Richard Fowler to head an inquiry into the matter, as Mr Fowler has previous ties with the MDC. Mr Barker says he is pleased the council has since renegged on the decision to employ Wellington lawyer Fowler, after it was first suggested by mayor Alistair Sowman and MDC chief executive officer Andrew Besley. “Richard Fowler has had too much involvment with this council and would be in Andrew

Besley’s pocket,” he says. “Besley is silly to even have suggested Richard Fowler. There needs to be an independent person who has had no involvement previously with the MDC.” Mr Fowler has previously worked for the local council as a commissioner and consultant and, according to Cr Arbuckle, stands to gain financially from future employment there. Christchurch man living in Marlborough “abandoned” By Damian George A Marlborough woman’s son who moved from Christchurch following a Boxing Day earthquake in the city is furious he has still not been allowed to retrieve his belongings seven weeks after the February 22 quake. Richard Hazeldine-Barber, 35, says he and his mother Marie were given only 15 minutes by the Christchurch City Council to gather what they could from his house when he went down a week after the quake struck. “We were told we would have two hours if we came back the next morning,” he says. “We went back, waited four and a half hours, and when we finally got in, were told we had 15 minutes.” Richard, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder known as PraderWilli Syndrome [PWS], managed to salvage an antique clock and some of his mother’s paintings, but was not allowed to take basics such as clothes and shoes as they were covered with dust and asbestos. The next day, he was allowed just five minutes to retrieve whatever else he could, and has not been allowed back in since. “My heart sank to the ground. There’s thousands of dollars worth of DVDs in there, rare movies and stuff like that. All I want to do is get my stuff so I know it’s okay.” Richard, now at his mother’s house in Koromiko, says living outside of Christchurch has made it extremely difficult for him to get help from local authorities such as WINZ, power companies, and the tenancy tribunal. He says he tried to file an application with WINZ for financial

support, and to get reimbursed for money spent travelling to and from the property, but was advised he had to do so in Christchurch. Richard says he is also concerned his abandoned Gloucester Street flat may be bulldozed by the council without him knowing about it. “I am, because the council have gone round telling people ‘your house is okay, we won’t touch it’ and then they go back the next day and it’s gone.” He says the anger felt by many people at being snubbed from the CBD has been fuelled by an article in the Christchurch Press, reporting businessman David Henderson

has been allowed unlimited entry into the area. “He can go in any time he wants and here’s me, literally on my hands and knees begging them to give me more time.” Marie says the negligence shown by authorities towards some of the people affected is appalling. “This is what’s really getting some people annoyed. We’re not stupid and most businessmen in the CBD aren’t, either,” she says. “The people outside the city are ordinary people, they’ve lost their job, lost their home or they’re people like Richard. They are totally abandoned.”

The New Zealand AIDS Foundation has called on the people of Blenheim to take part in the annual International AIDS Candlelight Memorial this year. The campaign, aimed at raising awareness of HIV, will be held at more than 1200 locations in 115 countries on May 15 to honour lives lost to the disease. “We would love to have a memorial in Blenheim in 2011,” regional coordinator for New Zealand Wayne Otter says. “Anyone who cares about the HIV epidemic or has been touched by HIV/AIDS in some way can coordinate a memorial. They don’t have to be experienced at organising events as it could be a gathering of just a few people.” Mr Otter says the New Zealand memorials vary widely in terms of location and attendance, but each one is special, “whether it’s three people or 300 and held by the sea, at the summit of a mountain, in a church, a park, or in a hall.” The theme for this year’s memorial is “touching lives”, recognising how HIV has touched the lives of so many.

Woman attacked by sheep A 63-year-old woman was taken to Wairau Hospital with moderate injuries after being attacked by a sheep on Taylor Pass Road on Thursday afternoon. A spokesperson for Blenheim St John says it appears the woman was moving sheep when one became agitated and inflicted injuries to the woman’s arm and leg. A St John ambulance attended the scene just after 5.30pm.

By Damian George Marlborough District councillor Jessica Bagge says discussion on possible changes to the region’s footpath management policy will be put on hold for at least six months. Controversial amendments to the policy were due to be debated by council last Thursday, including restricting businesses to just two chairs per table and allowing only 65 centimetres from a building’s premises to situate outdoor furniture. Councillor Bagge says the council representative who was driving the changes, Judith North, is no longer filling that role, and nothing will be done in the short-term. “We’ve left it on the table for the moment. We thought we’d wait for the dust to settle, then see who the new staffer is overseeing that,” she says. “Things are very hard at the moment for retailers and nobody

needs stress. We’re going to leave it the way it is and just see what the problems are and ensure the policy says the same things as other policies regarding outdoor dining. “I think it’s been going pretty well, really, so I don’t see any reason to change it at the moment.” One source says Mrs North has been removed from the position on account of being “over-zealous”, but MDC communications coordinator Julianna Dilrew says the change is part of a routine shifting of employees among different areas. Councillor Bagge says the changes would not affect the outdoor seating areas at bars such as Cornerstone and Scotch, as those businesses are leasing that land. However, businesses on Queen Street with outdoor tables, such as CPR and Chantilly Cafe, would be affected as their furniture is on a public footpath.

Public opinion was strongly against the changes when we spoke to some Queen Street diners on Monday. “I think it’s a terrible idea. We’ve got the nice climate, you should be able to enjoy it outside,” Blenheim man Graeme Andrews says. Fran Andrews agreed, saying: “If you’re in the office, it’s just really nice to be out in the fresh air and getting natural light. We should have more places like this.” And local woman Virginia Newman added: “I just think it’s not very good at all. We want to encourage people to be able to sit and dine outside, that’s what Blenheim’s all about.” *The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce CBD Group will be holding a public meeting tomorrow at 4.30pm at Youell House to discuss the policy, as well as Alfred Street Carpark, CBD upgrade, Rugby World Cup preparations, and other CBD issues.

Support for theatre encouraged By Damian George Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says it is time people got behind the proposed building of a new civic theatre in Blenheim. The theatre project has sparked huge debate in the region, with some Marlburians questioning factors such as its location, funding and necessity. But Mr Sowman says, although ratepayers will be asked to support the ongoing running cost of a new theatre, the impact on their pockets will be minimal. “The only cost to the ratepayer is $200,000 a year for the running of the theatre,” he says. “That works out to be nine dollars a year per ratepayer in Marlborough. That’s all they would have to pay.” Mr Sowman says the Marlborough District Council have committed only $5 million towards the $17 million project, with the rest likely to come from the Civic Theatre Trust. It is estimated $6 million of that will be generated from the

selling of the current requested an uptheatre site, while apto-date valuation. proximately a further “That is being $3.5 million has been done. From Page 1. “The public should be able to raise concerns or issues and have them heard by an independent person and let them be either proven or unproven,” Mr Barker says. “With the recent publicity surrounding the council, there must now be an inquiry. “The mayor and councillors should be giving the instructions and receive the report; not Andrew Besley.” In his letter, Cr Arbuckle says he has been approached by several constituents who have alleged there may be Jamie Arbuckle corruption in the council. “Are they right? Is it true? I have no idea,” he says. “Will I pretend I don’t know that these allegations exist? Absolutely not.” He says the minister of justice, auditor general, or ombudsman should be responsible for appointing a completely independent judge. “I want to be clear that Mr Fowler’s integrity is not being questioned. What I am questioning is whether New Zealand law regarding ‘apparent bias’ is being upheld.” Mr Besley was not available for comment yesterday, but deputy CEO Mark Wheeler says Mr Fowler met the approval of all other councillors at a meeting last week. “Certainly, no one expressed any discomfort with his Andrew Barker appointment other than councillor Arbuckle,” he says. “The word from the other councillors is that Richard is a man of the highest integrity and is very experienced and does a lot of investigations and local government work. “He has done work with council, but it wasn’t seen that it would influence his work on this inquiry.”

Big numbers expected for rescue ride By Damian George The Marlborough Ulysses Club is hoping more than 300 motorbikes and scooters will turn out for this year’s rescue ride on Sunday. The funds raised from the annual event are given to one of the rescue services in Marlborough, with the beneficiary this year the Westpac Rescue Helicopter team. Marlborough Ulysses Club publicity officer Jane Laing says a large number of Nelson riders traditionally come to Blenheim for the event, as well as riders from West Coast and Christchurch. “But we would also like anyone in the Renwick region that has a road legal motorbike or scooter to come

in and join us as well and make a donaiton to the cause.” Jane says the bikes will slow down at Renwick to allow the bikers to join the group. She encourages people to go to Witherlea Racecourse, where the ride will, just before midday to have a look at the impressive collection of bikes. “It’s a great display of bikes becaue we get such a variety of them,” she says. “And there will also be a custom bike display which will be well worth coming down for.” People can make donations by purchasing badges from either Witherlea Racecourse or at Havelock Domain, where the ride starts at 11.30am.

No petrol or road costs for this winner Continued from Page 1. Sixty-oneyear-old Blenheim woman Maureen Hamilton does not have to worry about soaring petrol prices for the next 12 months after winning Blenheim Toyota’s “Win a Car for a Year” promotion. The promotion was run locally and saw hundreds of entries in the draw to win a brand new Yaris Special Edition and free operating expenses for a whole year. Blenheim Toyota Sales Manager said for a first time promotion, he was pleased with its overall success. “It was great to be able to give away a car to someone like Maureen, she

was an ideal winner. We would like to thank everyone else who entered and for making it a great success,” he says. Although she had seen the newspaper advertising for the promotion Maureen says she didn’t realise she had made the draw after putting her 2009 Corolla into Blenheim Toyota’s paint shop for work. Last Thursday the draw was made on Radio ZM who phoned Maureen to give her the good news. “Being a one-eyed Toyota fan I was absolutely thrilled to win,” she says. And what does Maureen think of her new Toyota; “Really eye catching and very sporty with those wheels and front spoiler,” she says with a smile.

Student Cambridge bound By Damian George Cambridge International Scholarship winner Jo Cheer says scientists are “a long way off” finding the most effective cancer-preventing drugs, but wants to be a part of helping them get there. The former Marlborough Girls’ College student will be spending three years carrying out cancer drug research at Cambridge University, in England, when she begins her PhD in Biochemistry in October. “I’m very excited. I just reckon it will be awesome,” she says. “It’s a fantastic university and I’ve got a really good supervisor, and project to work on.” Jo has spent the last four years studying biochemistry at Victoria University in Wellington, graduating with honours in March with a bachelor of bio-medical sciences. She already has some experience in the field of research, having spent three months exploring anti-influenza drugs at the Australian National University in Canberra last summer. Although there have been significant advancements in cancer research in recent times, she is under no illusions about how far scientists have to go. “They’re a long way off. I don’t hope to cure it [cancer] but I hope to help towards developing better drugs.” As part of the scholarship, her study fees and living costs for her three years abroad have been paid for. She plans to complete her post-doctoral studies in the same field

Excavation and construction of the new Bunnings store will start early next month at Westwood Park, Outer Limits co-director Phil Robinson says. The Environment Court gave the green light to Outer Limits to proceed with the Westwood Park retail box development in April last year. The fight to bring the proposed $56 million Westwood shopping complex in Middle Renwick Road and Rose Street began in 2004 and, after a long battle, Springlands will finally

see the beginnings of construction next month. Mr Robinson confirmed the construction of roading and services will commence at the begining of May. The construction of buildings will follow the completion of roading and services. The Environment Court agreed to a big box retailing complex consisting of four retailers including Pak’nSave, Bunnings, and two rural supply outlets, as well as a 300-square- metre café.

r e y fl High Getting the perfect shot of a World War II fighter plane flying at a high altitude while battling wind and a narrow time frame may sound daunting to most, but for local photographer Gavin Conroy it is his passion as Celeste Lodewyk finds out. Gavin has become quite the celebrated aircraft photographer both here in Marlborough and throughout the country. His photographs have been published in a number of magazines including the Classic Wings magazine, featuring a huge variety of aircraft including WWII and military. What’s more, Gavin is close to releasing his first ever published book containing “the best” of his photographs, commemorating historic and legendary former military aircraft from the first and second world wars. To date Gavin has flown 300 flights with around 200 planes and has taken “too many photos to count”. But in looking back at where it all began, Gavin reveals that his love for flying began at age 16, and his photography more recently - 2004 in fact! “At the age of 10-years I would take my 120 film camera to the airport and take photos of all the different planes. Then later into my teens I began flying, taking my family and friends around the countryside for flights in aircraft like the trusty Piper Tomahawk. In 2004 Gavin was looking through some magazines and took particular interest in air-to-air photography. As he had ruled out the possibility of flying a WWII fighter himself, he decided he would fly with them and take photographs. Following the 2004 Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow, editor of Classic Wings magazine Graham Orphan was impressed with a number of Gavin’s photographs and suggested he start “taking photography seriously”. Initially feeling a little “daunted” by the idea, Gavin took the challenge head-on and went up in a Piper Cherokee to photograph a pair of Nanchang trainers. From that moment on Gavin was hooked. “It took around 20 minutes just to get used to the cold, the wind and the fact that the door was missing. “But my fears soon disappeared once I saw the two aircraft being flown in a perfect formation and all I could focus on was capturing that moment,” he grins. It has now been nearly seven years since Gavin had his first taste for air-to-air photography and it would be accurate to say that his “hobby” has now become something much greater. Gavin has spent hundreds of hours photographing all over New Zealand including commission work for aircraft owners. This 20-30 hour per week “hobby” takes place at nights, weekends and during holiday leave on top of his current role as branch manager for GoldPine. “It takes up all of my spare time so it helps to have a supportive wife,” he laughs. “At the moment I am particularly busy in the lead up to the Omaka Classic Fighters Air Show at Easter weekend, helping

to organise flights for international photographers to go up and photograph the different planes. “This is great promotion for the show and for NZ so it will be my priority to ensure they all walk away with a smile on their faces,” he says. Gavin’s photographs are sold through his website Classic Aircraft Photography and have featured on around 40 magazine covers, an incredible feat for this local man.

“I had no idea that my photography would become this successful. “I do this because I believe that history should never be allowed to disappear from our magazines or television screens, these aircrafts are too magnificent to forget,” he says. To view Gavin’s photography website and find out more about his soon to be released book, visit www.capphotography.ifp3.com.

No I don’t buy them. But if I did and I won, I’d pay my mum’s bills, get a car and always be on holiday and shop all the time!

I don’t buy tickets.

I buy one most weeks. If I won I would totally freak out!

I buy tickets when it’s a big one. I’d share it with family, buy a house, go on a holiday and pay all the bills.

I don’t buy a ticket all the time, but you have to be in to win! I’d give some to Christchurch, family, friends and set myself up.

I buy a ticket when it gets up above 15 mllion. If I won I’d share it with family and give it to Christchurch. But most of all I’d have to buy a holiday home!

layby welcome / loyalt y club 8 Arthur Street, Blenheim. Phone 578 3139

Dear Ed, What are Port Marlborough and Marlborough District Council doing about bilge water being poured into Queen Charlotte Sound by forestry ships?

Is it any wonder algae growth is happening, not to mention other bugs etc., that come with ships from Asia (Korea, China etc) and India? Megg Watt

Hospital land sale response Dear Ed, In response to Laurie Ham’s ‘Hospital Land Sale’: All due respect to your opinion, Mr Laurie Ham, but it is YOUR property that the board intends to sell and, if successful, when more land is needed, in part it will be YOUR taxpayer health money that will go to pay an ever ongoing lease, just the same as is taking place in Picton. Ken Lawrence Secretary, Marlborough Concerned Citizens Inc.

Measuring Council achievements Dear Ed, I thank the mayor for his response, and kind offer of a copy of the “Marlborough Growth and Development Strategy for Blenheim”. Sadly, a six hour round trip on bad roads to attend Council meetings, and the risk of it being pre-emptively closed to the public dissuades my attendance. Anyway, beyond observational critique, I have no interest in the future of Blenheim. I simply believe Blenheim citizens deserve better than long periods of inertia, relieved only by spurts of misguided projects, which blight the

district financially and visually for generations. The town planning of this community has evidently exceeded the skills-set of Councils to date. Like finger-painting tots in a kindy attempting the design of a Mars Lander. Unlike Dunedin, Blenheim has enjoyed a flexible and inexpensive opportunity to establish a progressive and appealing environment. Nothing of significance is apparent to date. We are after all, measured by achievement, not assurances. The mayor states “The Strategy”

has been compiled with “Widespread public consultation”, yet laments the “hail” of criticism when attempting implementation. Somewhat at odds I think. Thankfully, this “Marlborough Growth and Development Strategy for Blenheim” seems the perfect mechanism to stifle annoying criticism and render public debate redundant. Paradoxically, the weight of that title could be sufficient to snap the long thin branch of parochial hubris where MDC has had its nest for so long. Mr. G H Jeffries.

‘No’ to CEO choosing commissioner

The Sewing Store Centre Point Mall, High St, Blenheim

Phone: 578 7801 info@thesewingstore.co.nz www.thesewingstore.co.nz

Well done Cr Arbuckle, in convincing the council they can’t use a compromised commissioner to investigate corruption allegations. However CEO Besley still intends choosing the commissioner who is to investigate. The council can’t hold an inquiry into corruption allegations using a commissioner it has chosen for itself. Furthermore, it appears that

CEO Besley has set himself up to be the recipient of this report, yet it is the CEO’s council that is under investigation. Surely this is the equivalent of the Council investigating itself. The choice of commissioner and release of their report must be independent. Ratepayers require a truly transparent investigation, which can only be achieved by a judge appointed by the Department

of Justice or Minister of Local Government. Furthermore, don’t forget these are not Cr Arbuckle’s personal allegations. His statement indicated he was reflecting the concerns of ratepayers. Surely this is the role of every elected councillor? The message may not be liked by some but should we be shooting the messenger? John Kershaw.

Keep it Local Cantwell Joinery & Window Centre

Here at The Sun we pride ourselves on supporting our local community. That’s why we’re running our ‘Keep it Local’ campaign once a month promoting locally owned businesses. The last year has been a challenging time for most businesses. There has never been a more important time to shop locally, putting your money back into your community. So support your local businesses and ‘Keep it Local’

Elite Tyre and Alignment A1 Drycleaning

Quality and workmanship are not the only things that Cantwell Joinery & Window Centre of Blenheim prides itself in. There is also the satisfaction of knowing that your business is locally owned and operated and has the backing of the community,” says owner Ian Cantwell. “I believe when local businesses employ local staff and support one another, the spend stays in the area and in turn allows businesses to grow and provide employment for future generations.” Ian first joined Cantwell Joinery & Window Centre as an apprentice 45-years ago before purchasing it 13-years later. The business has continued to grow and today employs a total of nine staff and now incorporates New Zealand’s first Mityboy brand CNC machine. In addition Cantwell Joinery & Window Centre is Mastercraft’s Marlborough branch owner. For local and expert industry knowledge, Cantwell Joinery & Window Centre specialises in the manufacture of quality custom made joinery, kitchens, stairs, pre-hung doors, aluminium windows and doors plus much more.

One of Blenheim’s newest business additions, Elite Tyre and Alignment has become the first-stop for many locals wanting the best in quality and service. The father and son team, Dave and Brendan Gill, are proud to be local and reflect that through their business. “We are a totally independent tyre business with no franchise fees and restrictions. This allows us to source any brand and any quantity of tyres, while passing on the savings to our customers,” Brendan says. With nearly 50-years combined industry experience, Dave and Brendan opened Elite Tyre and Alignment on Grove Road in Blenheim last September. Dave is well known within the community from his 17-year stint as manager of Blenheim’s Beaurepaires, while Brendan last year returned from his corporate position at the head of Goodyear and Dunlop Tyres in Wellington. The business has since continued to grow offering a range of services to the local community. These include the sale and repair of tyres and tubes, computerized wheel alignments on all cars, 4-wheel drives and vans as well as stocking a range of Exide Batteries and other auto accessories. Elite Tyre and Alignment also specialises in the sale of alloy wheels, vintage and military wheels plus much more. For more information call in and talk to Dave and Brendon.

Excitement heightens as jubilee approaches Renwick School is this year celebrating a very proud and historic moment, the school’s 150th Jubilee. The Jubilee will commence on Friday, October 28 with celebrations running through to Sunday, October 30. The school was founded in 1861 by Rev. Thomas Nicholson, who was also the first minister to the Wairau arrived in Renwick around 1857. The school’s growth in this time has been considerable. In 1861 student numbers began with 16 and today the number sits at 447.

Renwick resident and Jubilee Committee member Graham Brooks is currently updating the Renwick School 125th Jubilee book, published in 1986 to be re-released at the 150th Jubilee. The committee is currently applying for funding to help with its publication. The book will include a chronology of main events, a look at the change in buildings, memories of past staff and pupils, changes in curriculum, governance and teaching styles plus much more.

Local woman celebrates 90th Blenheim woman Olive Burdekin may be one of the the few women to be given a manicure as her 90th birthday present. Olive’s friends organised the special treatment for her on Friday, as she marked the special day with an afternoon tea at Ashwood Park Retirement Village. Olive and husband Alan, who is a Battle of Britain survivor, moved to Marlborough from England in 1947 following the second World War. They wed in Darbyshire in 1942, before moving to Wairau Valley and then the Marlborough Sounds, where they lived for 42 years. Alan passed away two and a half years ago, after 67 years of marriage.

Bible Answers... with Pastor Jeff Williams

Do you have a Bible question for Jeff? Email us your question at pastor@mbbc.org.nz or post it to us. Full confidentiality is assured at all times. Q – “Is it right to use “scare tactics” when presenting the gospel to the unsaved?” (General question gleaned from several different responses to our articles on earthquakes) Part II A – As we said last week, “scare tactics” is a poor term and emotionally charged at that, but the concept of “the fear of the Lord” is well established in Scripture. What do we know? 1) 2) 3)

4) 5)

Our God is a perfect balance of love and holiness Our God allowed Satan to rebel and gives all men the same choice – to voluntarily choose to love their Creator or to reject Him and to love self or Satan instead There are consequences to this choice – choosing to love God brings forgiveness of sin and the right to live with God forever; rejecting him results in the same punishment as Satan – an eternity of separation from God in the lake of fire which was originally created for the devil and his angels (Matt 25:41) Those who choose to follow God Almighty are commanded to take this message to every creature on the planet (Mark 16:15) Jesus set the example for us as the first great preacher of the gospel – He preached against specific sins on numerous occasions, preached more about hell than anyone else in the Bible and commanded people directly to “Fear God!” in light of the consequences of eternity. At every corner his motivation was not to “scare” people but to show them the love of God BY TELLING THEM THE TRUTH!!!

Let’s assume for just a moment that you are an overweight smoker who eats fish and chips four nights a week and never exercises. When you visit your doctor, he might begin to make some remarks about your condition and the potential problems you face. As you laugh it off, would your doctor be justified to get right in your face and with a very serious tone begin to read you the riot act? Would it be “scare tactics” for him to tell you about the serious consequences of diabetes, lung cancer, heart attacks and your probable, early death in the next 12-24 months? Here is a fellow telling you THE TRUTH, and out of the GOODNESS of his heart doing all he can to warn you about your SELF-DESTRUCTIVE path and the CONSEQUENCES that lay ahead. To accuse such a man who genuinely cares enough about you of “scare tactics” would only show your shallowness, selfishness and ignorance. Any Christian who genuinely loves Jesus Christ and his fellow mankind will “speak THE TRUTH in love.” (Eph 4:15) We do not speak about sin, death and hell because we enjoy the topic – but BECAUSE WE CARE ABOUT YOU!!! Whether you recognize it, appreciate it or resent it, we will continue to do so. The Bible advocates just such a balanced approach to sharing the gospel with non-believers. Jesus never used the same approach twice when witnessing (read the gospels), but he did take a balanced approach stressing to some the love of God and to others the justice and holiness of God. We are commanded in Jude 22-23, “And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” Have you told anyone about Jesus this week? Is your evangelism “balanced?”

Three times the chance of victory By Celeste Lodewyk A thunderous field of ‘modified monsters’ will greet speedway fans on Saturday night as the New Zealand Modified Grand Prix takes place at Eastern States Speedway. Around 11 entries have been received to date from all over the country for the national event, and what makes this year’s event special for Marlborough is the representation by three local drivers. In previous years Eastern States has only had one local modified driver, Scott Valk but with the addition of Picton men Craig Pottinger and Julian WAR OF THE WINGS: Eastern States Speedway’s hopes for victory at this weekends NZ Modifieds Grand Prix has been tripled with the entry of three Cameron Marlborough local drivers, Julian Cameron, Craig Pottinger and Scott Valk. Memory of speedway fan honoured By Celeste Lodewyk Speedway fans will not only be getting their fill of tyre squealing racing action on Saturday night, but they will also be paying tribute to the memory of a very special young man, Charlie Higgins. It has been four-years since the 13-year-old avid speedway fan and volunteer was tragically killed in 2007, and ever since Eastern States Speedway has held an annual fun night in memory of Charlie. This will be the third time that “Charlies Fun Night” has been held which will also include the collection of donations for a charity chosen by Charlie’s family. This year Life Flight will benefit from donations.

“There will a bucket at the pit gate as well as a number of us with donation buckets and Life Flight banners in the crowd and the pit areas so everyone will get the chance to donate,” says Charlie’s mother Trich Dixon. “Life Flight is a great charity which has helped our family before so every little bit we can raise for them will help,” she says. Charlie’s Fun Night will include his favourite class, ATV bikes from Christchurch and Marlborough as well as supporting classes including youth mini stocks and mini stocks from Nelson, stock cars, street stocks and productions from Christchurch Nelson as well as our local drivers.

Just like old times for Trojans By Damian George For the first time in more than 30 years, the Trojans Soccer Club was represented in the Marlborough junior competition when three of its teams ran out onto the field over the weekend. Not since the mid-1970s has the club been able to field a junior side. This year, the Trojans have a roster of more than 40 players in the junior grades, making it a hugely significant season for one of the region’s oldest clubs. “Everybody’s rapt about it,” Trojans committee member and current men’s team player Jim Western says. “We’ve got something to build on now. We’ve put everything

into it this year. The Redwood Trust, who are our major sponsors, have put everything into the juniors.” A long-standing Trojan, Jim was one of two members who took it upon themselves to help attract Marlborough players to the club. “We’re just trying to develop them and get them into the club now so, later on, they’ll be able to come into the senior teams.” The Trojans 8th grade side, the Tomcats, secured a 2-2 draw in their match, while the 9th grade Tigers started their campaign off in winning fashion with a 4-2 victory. But the highlight of the week-

end came from Jim’s 10th grade Young Guns, who stormed to a 7-2 victory over Renwick. The Young Guns boast a handful of Marlborough junior representatives, and most of its players have been coached by Jim since they began playing. “I’ve had four or five of them since they were five years old, and we’ve slowly built them up. Most of them I’ve had since they were seven or eight.” While the results were encouraging, just the sight of seeing the bright orange Trojan shirts being worn by the younger players was the real success, he says. “It’s just good to get them out there and playing.”

On Sunday, April 3 10 Pelorus Judo players competed at the Central Districts Open Judo Championship held in Blenheim, and walked away with 10 well deserved medals. The competition saw around 80 judoka participants from all over New Zealand aged as young as seven-years, and for some it was their first ever competition. Angus McMahon (7) won silver and bronze, Fletcher Fairweather (9) won gold, Matthew Fox (10) won gold, Ella Donald (9) won silver, Tai Shallcrass (10) won gold and bronze, Cameron Donald (13) won gold and bronze and Andrew McMahon won bronze. Most sportspeople would tell you the last thing you want to do if you have a known weakness is to admit it. All Black second-five Ma’a Nonu ignored that notion recently when he announced prior to the Hurricanes Super 15 match against the Brumbies on Saturday that he is the “lowest I’ve ever been in rugby”. On one hand, it was refreshing to hear a rugby player say something mildly interesting, rather than the robotic drivel they have been programmed to churn out. But, on the other, it was hugely telling that Nonu felt so dejected, he didn’t even mind

letting the oposition know it. It is little wonder Nonu is a bit down in the dumps. Before last weekend’s game, the Hurricanes, boasting practically an entire All Blacks backline, had won one out of five matches, and Nonu’s uninspiring efforts played no small part in that. Is it now possible that the mainstay of the All Blacks backline for the last three seasons will miss out on the most important tournament in New Zealand rugby history later this year? It seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago. Nonu came into this season having notched up his 50th test match during a stellar

Locals shave heads for cause By Celeste Lodewyk Twenty-one locals are braving chilly Marlborough mornings with their bare heads after having their locks shaved in support of the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation of New Zealand. On Saturday two separate “Shave For a Cure” events were held in Blenheim in an effort to raise much needed money for the foundation. The first was held at Blenheim’s Porse office on Monday morning where Porse nanny Sarah Thornley was cheered on by a crowd of friends and family as her shoulder length hair was shaved off. “I was a bit nervous beforehand but we had fun with it. I had my hair tied into numerous pigtails and everyone had a go at cutting one off. “The best part of the experience was when a cancer survivor randomly approached me later that day to thank me for supporting the cause, that was really special,” she says. Sarah has been busy in the weeks leading up to Saturday fundraising through the www.shaveforacure.co.nz website, handing out pledge sheets to friends and family and collecting donations on the day. She has raised $350 to date, though more donations can be made over the next week via the website. Later that day in the carpark of A1 Drycleaning & Laundry on High Street, Blenheim couple Scott Palatchie and Leanne Budny held another successful event, pulling in over $2000. Leanne says the idea to hold a public Shave For a Cure auction came just three days prior to Saturday, but despite the last minute organisation the event was met with resounding support. “Scott was wanting to shave his head anyway so we thought why not make it something bigger and benefit a charity, so we decided at 4pm on Tuesday to do our own event. Twenty people turned up to have their heads shaved while the public took part in the 26 fundraising auctions of items donated by local businesses. Some of the major auctions included a Hunting and Fishing jacket, a cruise for two from Beachcomber and accommodation at the Beachcomber Inn for two people. The event was sponsored by Morgan Road Nursery which donated an incredible $1000, supported by Bounce With Us with the use of a bouncy castle and by the Sun Valley Roadsters who put on an impressive display of hotrods for the public.
