By Chris Tobin GrapeRide first timer Iona Jones, 45, used to go cycling with friends on an old bike but finding she couldn’t keep up, she went out and bought a new one.

Tomorrow, she’ll be wheeling out the new bike and will be among 2500 cyclists from around Marlborough and other parts of New Zealand who will be lining up in the 42km taster, 101km, 202km, and the gut-buster 505km events which all make up the GrapeRide, the South Island’s biggest recreational road cycling event.

“I’ve been training three times a week building up to a couple of hours,” the home-based editor and trained lawyer said.

Petition reaches over 8000 The Save Our Services at Wairau Hospital petition officially closed on Wednesday with a total of 8594 people signing it.

One of the organisers Jessica Bagge said it was a great response and The Sun had been critical in helping this figure to be achieved.

Over 2000 people visited The Sun office to sign the petition.

She said some copies of the petition still had to be picked up which would push the final total towards 9000.

The petition will be presented to the Minister of Health Tony Ryall.

“We want him to understand the magnitude of it; we don’t want to be in this position next year,” Ms Bagge said.

Mr Ryall will be visiting Blenheim next week.

“I would like his staff agreeing for us to see him,” she said.

RSA stalwart passes away

By Chris Tobin A stalwart of the Marlborough Returned and Services’ Association (RSA), Vern Anderson, passed away at Wairau Hospital on Tuesday. He was a month off his 90th birthday.

Mr Anderson was on the executive of the RSA in Blenheim for 43 years; he served terms as Marlborough president, vicepresident and was treasurer from 1980 to 2009.

He was also a former Nelson Marlborough West Coast district president.

Marlborough RSA president Ernie Thomson said Mr Anderson was a “nature’s gentleman.”

membership (in 1976) and the gold star and bar (1996).

“He also received the RSA National Certificate of Appre-

ciation for 50 years service which is the highest award available and he was the only one in Marlborough,” Mr Thomson said.

Mr Anderson served with 26 Battalion of 2NZEF during World War Two seeing action in Italy where he was wounded with shrapnel in his legs.

Originally from Nelson, he settled in Blenheim in 1963 and with wife Netta, they raised two children in the town.

Well known in business circles, he worked for K. E. Freeth farm machinery and then with John Collett as partner bought the business.

“He was working part-time selling Nissan trucks until he was 86,” daughter Vernette Sargeant said.

Outside his family and business Mr Anderson’s great interests were the RSA, lodge and fishing.

Mr Anderson was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for public service in 2005 and was a member of Lodge Eckford No 334.

He is survived by Netta, his two children Mrs Sargeant and Ian, grand-children and great grand-children.

His funeral will be held this morning at the Clubs of Marlborough starting at 10.30am.

The pair are in the New Zealand team for the world junior track championships in Scotland later this year and they need to raise $20,000 to help them prepare and get there.

They are setting up a stall at Forrest Estate, and will be there today and tomorrow.

“People can do the erg max test as hard as they can go and if they make a donation they’ll be eligible for a prize,” Saunders said.

“At the end of the day we’ll have a crack at beating the top score.”

Helping out a mate

By Chris Tobin Blenheim man Ken Deane, 80, owns a small Hairy Maclary look-alike named Joan but he had been worried that his little dog wasn’t getting out of the house.

This was because Ken has been suffering from ill health and hasn’t been able to get around like he used to.

So his prized pet Joan was beginning to suffer from ‘cabin fever.’

Enter Ken’s neighbour Pete Slape.

Pete offered to take Joan out for some fresh air each morning, for a change of scene and to check out the neighbourhood.

Ken took up the offer and the problem was solved.

“First I take our Bichon Frise, Essie, for a walk on a lead,” said Pete explaining what has become a daily routine.

“Then I come back, get out the mobility scooter and I take Ken’s wee dog for a ride.”

They cover a route on the footpaths around Budge Street.

“People often ask me what sort of dog she is,” said Pete.

“I reply she’s a cross between a Chihuahua, Papillon and a barber’s floor!”

For the last three to four months Pete and Joan have become a familiar sight on their circuit and Pete said people often wait for them to go by.

When there’s not much traffic around at the weekend, the twosome venture further afield into the central town and to Seymour Square.

“She’s a dear little thing,” said Pete, “she just sits on my knee.”

Next time you see Pete and Joan out on their daily trip, give them a wave.

The male motorcyclist who died after a head on collision with another vehicle on State Highway 6 at Okaramio on Tuesday evening was Kenneth Gordon Lilley, aged 54, of Wellington.

Mr Lilley was the general manager of Black Diamond Technologies, the New Zealand distributor of Mitsubishi Electric.

The crash occurred after Mr Lilley braked to avoid colliding with a vehicle in front of him and lost control of his motorcycle, crossing the centre line into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

The accident happened about 5pm and Mr Lilley died at the scene. He was travelling home to Wellington after holidaying in the Nelson area.

No one else was injured in the crash.

TV technician run off feet

By Chris Tobin Blenheim television technician Rod Thompson says he has been “run off his feet” as people rush to make the switch over to digital before the April 28 deadline.

On that day analogue TV will be switched off and replaced by Freeview.

“We’re booked two weeks ahead; it’s been crazy busy but I love it,” Mr Thompson of Marlborough TV Services said.

“People have started to realise that every television in the house has to be hooked up.”

To obtain digital TV, people in Marlborough require a decoder and satellite dish while

86 percent of the country would be able to access it through Freeview HD. Marlborough viewers will be able to see 16 channels on Freeview, including Trackside.

Not being able to view more than 10 other Freeview channels as much of the country will be able to, is not worrying Marlborough people, Mr Thompson said.

“Most of the people are happy. They’ve only had one, two and three; now they’re happy they’ve got more.

“And if they want even more, they can go to Sky.” Marlborough will not receive high definition (HD) digital with the changeover.

Great quality harvest underway

By Kat Duggan The Marlborough grape harvest is getting well underway, with growers trying to get the fruit in while it was still in good condition.

Wine Marlborough general manager, Marcus Pickens, said wineries around the region were getting into harvest, and quality of the fruit was looking good, although yields were smaller than initially expected.

“The yield has been lower than the estimates so far, but the quality is great…the Awatere Valley has been ahead of schedule, indicating a smaller crop, [because] generally the longer a crop takes to ripen, the bigger the crop is, so we would have preferred it to have started a little bit later,” Mr Pickens said.

Lawson’s Dry Hills general manager, Sion Barnsley said their winery began harvesting a week before Easter, and he had been happy with the quality of the fruit.

“Since mid Easter we’ve been flat out, with 24 hour shifts starting, and the fruit being in excellent condition after the great summer we’ve had,” Mr

Both Mr Barnsley and Mr Pickens expressed concerns over the forecast of rain for the end of the week, and said there was a focus now on just getting the fruit in.

Fifty percent of Lake Grassmere salt works has just been bought by a Hong-Kong based company, Maehtech Pty, for

$41.7 million.

Lake Grassmere salt works is run by Dominion Salt Ltd., who have said the sale would not affect operations at Grassmere, which is still half-owned by Cerebos, based in Auckland.

Maehtech Pty is a subsidiary of CK Life Sciences International, owned by one of Asia’s wealthiest men, Li Ka-Shing.

In 2008 he bought a Wellington electricity network off electricity and gas distributor, Vector, for $785 million.

Parking wardens On a recent trip to the North Island we were very happy to find many of the towns with no parking meters and no over zealous parking wardens like we have in Blenheim.

Dear Ed I read with interest and some disbelief Mayor Sowman's interview in "The Sun" and to cap the lot his pet hate..

Use - "Facts and Figures". Could the people of Blenheim seeing you are so keen on "Facts and Figures" please be informed on one or two...

1. How much in financial terms is the parking building losing per month?

2. Why was $100,000 gifted to the theatre trust when it was understood the $200,000 per annum was only to activate when the theatre was up and running.

3. Rumour has it the $100,000 paid to the theatre trust is to keep the contractors on the job? Fact or ficton.

4. Liz Davidson Park - did the plumbers get a cheap line of toilets? it would appear so either that or the council got a special on "Out of Order" signs.

Now for the last shot - Who is paying for the removal of the palms? Surely the Theatre Trust can't be expected too! they'll have nothing left.

Marborough Mayor Alistair Sowman replies: 1. The parking building is not ‘losing’ money. The current occupancy rate is covering its operating costs.

2. $100,000 was not ‘gifted’ to the Theatre Trust. It was originally intended that the $6 million payment for the purchase of the old civic theatre was to be made in one lump sum. Payment is now on a deferred payments basis which will save the council interest. This is fair to the trust as they are not able to receive income from investing the full $6m sum immediately. Overall council saves money from this proposal.

3. I can confirm that this is just a rumour, not a fact.

4. The amenities at Liz Davidson Place are of the latest standard for public amenities in New Zealand. The ‘out of order’ sign is put up when staff are dealing with a hygiene or vandalism matter caused by users of the amenities.

5. The trust is paying for the removal of the palm trees.

Omaka Marae Dear Ed, In the local news the Charities Commission confirmed it is reviewing the operations of Omaka Marae.

The commission said it started its review after first receiving information relating to Omaka Marae in 2011.

I am a long term member of Omaka Marae. In May 2010, Omaka Marae held an AGM at which audited financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2009, were presented.

There has been no public meeting since that date in May 2010. Therefore, us members are awaiting audited financial statements dated April 1, 2009, onwards.

This is unprofessional and totally unacceptable. The trustees of Omaka Marae have not done their duty.

It is very clear, now is the time for all new people to be entrusted with the care and management of our community marae.

Since, the founding chairman of Omaka Marae, the late Laurie Duckworth's resignation and his phasing out of involvement, there has been no one with the necessary leadership and management skills.

Consequently, Omaka Marae has deteriorated, leaving great facilities unused.

The sun was shining, the crowds were happy and even the animals were enjoying the fuss made over them at the Flaxbourne A&P Show in Ward on March 24 .

Organisers could not have picked a better day to host the annual event which kicked off Saturday night with a speed shearing competition at the East Coast Inn. People from all over Marlborough flocked to the Flaxbourne A&P Showgrounds to enjoy the trade exhibits, animals,

equestrian, dog trial yarding, shearing competitions and family entertainment.

Association president Derek West said crowd numbers were on par with last year while the number of sheep and trade exhibitors were up.

"The standard and quality of sheep was definately up this year and overall the whole show was well supported," he said.

The newly introduced 'home-built, self propelled motorised couch' competition was also enjoyed by the crowd, and will

Bamboo Garden welcomes new owners Originally owned by the Maeshinjo family, Bamboo Garden Restaurant has delivered Chinese, Thai and Japanese dishes to the people of Marlborough for the past 19 years.

Now that they have retired to Australia, new owners Bu-nga Krataitong and Nuttavut Rodsienglum have officially taken over the business.

The couple had previously worked in the restaurant before leaving to start their own business in Nelson four years ago.

There they own Chai-Yo Thai Restaurant and takeaway services in Nelson and Richmond.

"The previous owners were very kind and supportive of us when we left and we kept in touch over the years.

"We thank them for giving us this fantastic opportunity," Bu-nga said.

A real Mini man One of Robert Farnell’s earliest car memories was his dad driving a Morris Oxford 1957 on regular trips from the Waihopai Valley to town while smoking.

Might sound pretty ordinary, but his father only had one arm – having lost the other in the war. So with just his right hand, he could get his tobacco pouch out and papers, roll a cigarette and light it – all while driving with Robert and his sister in the back seat.

And it was a column change.

Robert’s first car was a Mini and he’s owned four more since, plus a 1967 Prince Skyline, which he wishes he still had now!

More recently, Robert had an Austin Healy, “The sort of car we dreamt about when we were young”, he says.

Robert sold it to buy a camper van (much to the disgust of his mates) which he and his wife have thoroughly enjoyed.

Robert still has a love of the classic Mini.

It was a breakthrough for the layout of the modern car – a wheel in each corner and the motor running ‘east west’.

This wheel placement, right on the sides of the chassis made the car much safer than the regular practice of them being placed further under the body.

This has had a huge impact on safety according to Robert.

In 1973, 843 people died on New Zealand roads, compared to less than 280 last year.

Whilst today the roads are safer, Robert believes the biggest factor is the greater stability of the vehicles.

Another factor in far less deaths on the road is the improved attitude towards and policing of drink-driving.

Robert remembers a saying from his younger days, ‘If you can’t drive when you are drunk – you shouldn’t have a licence’.

It was of course, a bad mind-set but was a reflection of the time.

Even though drink-driving still occurs today – it’s not nearly as prevalent as back then.

Before opening at Omaka, Jeff Grant (Omaka Classic Cars chief volunteer) showed

With the new shed being built, Robert suggested they might need a hand, so by the next day he was anointed as a volunteer and has

been heavily involved since the day Omaka Classic Cars opened.

We learned a lot more about the Jesse Ryder incident following a court appearance in Christchurch yesterday by the two accused of assaulting him, and it leaves you scratching your head.

The lawyer defending one of the charged men said there were two, not four people who allegedly assaulted Ryder as reports last week stated.

Nor, the lawyer added, did Ryder sustain a fractured jaw, or a collapsed lung as alleged but the injury was described as being a serious concussion.

The lawyer reportedly said also eyewitness accounts of the incident were wildly inaccurate.

What do you believe?

For sure, the judge hearing the case wasn’t happy with a newspaper and print organisation publishing the two accused men’s names before their court appearance.

Has the media gone off half-baked and with half the facts?

We’ll find out more, no doubt and whatever the rights and wrongs, the good thing is that Ryder is on the mend.

There’s plenty of sport around Marlborough this weekend.

Pedal pushers from all over are flocking into Blenheim for the GrapeRide and hopefully the weather is OK. The full range of cyclists from elite to mum and dads out for a spin are catered for by this event which must

be one of the keys to its success, plus, as GrapeRide spokesperson Duncan Mackenzie said to me this week, they look after the people with music and food making it a fun time for all.

Rugby kicks off too on Saturday with the Wadsco premier division; then there’s the Marlborough Squash Open and pro wrestling at the Redwoodtown School hall on Saturday evening.

Derby destruction pays off

Jones came out on top as other entrants were forced to retire in this season’s derby whilst fellow competitor Brett McGlashan drove his machine to victory in the derby car non-contact race during the early stages of the meeting held at Eastern States Speedway last Saturday evening.

Visiting drivers from Canterbury, Nelson and the West Coast joined local drivers to participate in the “Easter Eggstravaganza”.

The Marlborough Open Championships in both Stockcar and Production Saloon classes were run whilst adult and youth ministocks, streetstocks and saloons battled for points over three heats in the Easter meeting with sashes being awarded to podium finishers.

Motorcycle skills John Laing has been a passionate motorcycle rider for most of his life, and it's this enthusiasm which inspires students who train with him through his business, Marlborough Motorcycle Riding School.

Two years ago John and his wife Jane started their NZTA accredited training school, taking students through their Basic Handling Skills Certificate required for their motorcycle learners license test.

"We have had riders from 16 through to 72 years of age," John says.

John also offers pre-license 'refreshers' or assessments to riders before they sit their tests.

"I train people up to the NZTA standard by teaching riders good skills and techniques for when they get out on the
